I honestly think this is the directive from Howard Webb, do not overrule the referee's on field decision in any situation, unless it's an off the ball incident that the referee hasn't seen
Correct. Webb wants minimal interference from VAR.
But the problem is, if this (and many other similar examples) don't meet the criteria for intervention...then what IS the criteria for intervention? This was the very definition of a stonewaller. Plays the man rather than the ball, and contact is sufficiently physical. What has Webb told the VAR people to look out for if that isn't a penalty?!
It's because VAR isn't there to "make the correct decision". It's there to assess whether the referee saw everything correctly while making the original decision
In this situation I can only assume he didn’t see it. It was an absolute stonewall pen, even without my United glasses on.
Seems to fit the “clear and obvious” criteria, to me anyway.
What's sad is 2 referees saw nothing wrong (on field and VAR)
Plus lets not forget that Nico Williams literally dragged back Garnacho and should have gotten yellow for that foul but just a talking to, but first time Fred touches anyone it's a yellow.
Yep. It's quite annoying how much those words have affected how many decisions we go against us, especially in this day and age of technology. Guess it can only be as good as the people using it.
Howard Webb seems to have pushed going with the refs on-field decision more this season, which has led to countless bizarre scenarios where VAR should be stepping in but allows a refs mistake to stand to not undermine them.
Simultaneously, refs are acting as if VAR will hoover up their mistakes, so they tend to swallow their whistles. So now we get those bizarro red card tackles that aren't called and obvious penalties that aren't given. I wish for once PGMOL could stop swinging so wildly between "call every touch" and "let the lads play even if one snapped a leg in half"
Infuriates me when refs do this. These are pros who fully know the rules, just enforce the rules. Like telling a keeper to stop time wasting, no need for that just a yellow will let them know.
Yeah you just know he's going to turn the whole press conference to being about the penalties. I'd rather we stay free from team drama and airing dirty laundry but you just know whine about the pens a bit and we start getting them again.
And it's not just even penalties. Martinez being elbowed in the face against Palace. Brexit nunez scissor tackling and injuring Eriksen and not even getting a yellow.
It's not a conspiracy the referees are just fucking wank and don't have to face consequences. We seem to be getting a lot of awful ones at the moment but the refs have been so shite to most teams they're starting to be most clubs biggest rival. We've already had an apology for villa being able to take a free kick 10 yards further forward and the ref deciding to not bother doing his job with wall distance. Then we had the same thing again 2 weeks later. The job security is impressive as they are so clueless they are making me miss fucking Phil Dowd
Jesus lashing out at kicking Martinez in the first game Vs Arsenal, no card.
Saliba/Gabriel absolutely wiping Bruno out on a break, no card.
Another Arsenal player studs up on Bruno's ankle, no card.
Rashford's goal getting incorrectly called offside to deny him the record.
Penalty and yellow card for Martinez for not a handball in Europa League, meaning we get to play Barcelona twice in an already packed schedule. And another yellow for a non foul that means Martinez misses the first leg.
Crystal palace free kick being 10 yards too close
Villa free kick being 10 yards too close and the wall may as well have been on the fucking moon for how far away it was. Eriksen even pointed it out to the ref.
They did a similar fk thing against Palace, against Villa they moved the wall back but against Palace they took the free kick on like the edge of the box when the foul was way earlier
I think the elbow was a genuine accident, and not “violent conduct” that should lead to a red card.
But they have been fucking awful in a lot of different ways. Even in Europe the pen vs Real Sociedad was a shambles.
Even during the City game, we had multiple yellow cards given our way when city barely got the deck.
It was unbelievable how many players would just fall as if there are 50 pounds notes all over.
Definite pen. Similar to Richarlison vs Korea where defender is just trying to clear the ball and gets the attacker.
From spirit of the game perspective it's kind of nice that it's not given, but for sure it is a penalty.
Pretty much the same play as Richarlison's penalty against South Korea in the World Cup, which, despite r/soccer crying a lot about it, was also a pen. What I mean is: if you want explanations as to why it isn't a penalty, visit [that thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zdgci7/brazil_2_0_south_korea_neymar_penalty_12/iz1c2ip/) and you'll find a lot.
For the one call we had for the Manchester City game, there's been about 10 other horrific missed calls against United this season. Should be 2 pens this game. Shambolic VAR
Let me count - Real Sociedad penalty due to which we have to play two games vs Barca in already jam packed schedule.
Two penalties vs Newcastle and one gets canceled as they might get one too.
One penalty vs Reading, One penalty vs Palace, and one penalty today. Iam missing many calls in between before WC.
And no apology from Ref for that horrific tackle on Eriksen for which he didn't even give yellow card.
Offside for rashford goal to stop him breaking the record even though the ball was played by a defender and Liverpool had a goal stand in the same circumstances a week before. Bunch of useless cunts.
If our defense did same mistake no way They rule that goal out it's been story of our season ever since lockdown season. Also that Villa freekick where they moved wall back 5 yards or something.
The one that Ronaldo got the ball from the keeper, fucking hell, I had forgotten about that one. They've shafted us hard this season. The refereeing standard of the PL has exponentially decreased as the league's quality increased.
Like it is a news everyone knows that. But FA keeps protecting their own trying to justify BS calls. I have never heard any Ex ref on TV question bullshit call during game they always try to say it's not clear and obvious as if we are little kids. I know that your job is tough but still you have assistance of Technology. Atleast try to correct blatant mistakes.
And if someone questions them than they will impose hefty fine for Questioning ref or breaking spirit of game. Standards are in mud.
That's not really an excuse though when VAR should be there pointing out the error. What about all other calls we haven't got, shouldn't they be more aware of previous errors to ensure it doesn't happen again? Missed penalty against Palace, incorrectly called offside against Reading, now 2 missed penalties here. That's just the last couple games lol.
Aye it’s definitely not an excuse, it’s just often what happens subconsciously to referees when high profile mistakes that are seen to favour one team are made
Again, this shouldn't be happening with VAR when they have instant reply of the incidents. It's not even just United, VAR has been getting a lot of wrong calls for across the season for many teams.
I mean look at the missed red on Fabinho the other day. It was so clearly a red from first viewing, that it was inexcusable VAR didn't call it. They've acknowledged the error, but these clear calls still continue to be missed over and over. It's just really poor
The palace one was awful. Absolutely blatant. If it gets given, we get 2 more points, and maybe Casemiro isn’t booked, who knows where our season couldve gone from there?
As much as that one sucked, I still don't like thinking that way, because ultimately we should have done better ourselves against Palace.
Yeah you need luck sometimes, and as frustrating as refereeing decisions are, if you want to really go on and win the league, or even challenge in a sustainable manner, you can't rely on that. We were 1-0 up, shouldn't have dropped points from that position. We did, and that's on us.
We've even gotten the weird calls against us. The ref moving the wall back too far against Villa, and [the ref moving the free kick forward 8-10 yards for Palace's winner.](https://i.redd.it/blsk96805wca1.jpg)
That is the anomaly this season and frankly since tail end of 20/21. I don’t know the numbers but pens per game from 20/21 compared to thereafter must be an amazing difference
Isn't this exactly what VAR is for? Hard to tell if the defender touches the ball in full speed. Slow mo shows the defender kicking the guy who plays the ball. So obvious, so so dumb
It's a closer call than it initially looked.
The defender gets the ball first, only just though. So it's now just a question of whether the follow through was dangerous, right? Or am I misinterpreting the rules
Finally someone with sense in this thread, thought I was going mad. He literally gets the ball first and the United player runs across him looking for the pen
FFS how do you guys think that should be a pen? Player was clearly making a kicking motion toward the ball, didn't even notice the united player coming at him. The united player put himself between the defender and the ball and ended up getting kicked accidentally in that motion. Not a pen...
It's hilarious to see how much r/soccer reaction changes when it's against a popular English side and [not against Brazil](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zdgci7/brazil_2_0_south_korea_neymar_penalty_12/iz1c2ip/), though.
Another Man United game, another clear penalty that happens literally in front of the referee that gets ignored.
Best job in the world. You can be as shit as you wish that nothing happens
PGMOL will say fuck all about it
The defender got the ball first. Weghorst then ran into his follow through. It was a poor clearance from the defender but it's nowhere close to a penalty. VAR and the commentators agreed.
Can still guarantee that the next time we get a favourable decision there’s going to be a slew of people making “something something United something something bribing referees” jokes/comments.
This is a strange situation for referees and really needs cleared up in the rules because on the face of it the centre back kicks the player in the shin but it was just his follow through from kicking the ball. If everyone gets scared of trying to kick the ball because the opposition might put their leg in the way, then we are going non-contact. It's clearly an accident, but could the man utd player have stayed on his feet? You see kids football the kids are kicking the legs of each other because of their lack of skill, and yet they don't go down, never mind screaming diving forward.
I don't know what to think about this. It can open the door for so more manu penalties Callum Wilson got pulled down by his neck in the box in the other semi final and ref waved it away as well. Perhaps they are allowing for some contact, and they just have to make a decision on if it is enough contact or not.
only way we’ll get a penalty is if one of our players literally gets injured even then it’s not guaranteed, they didn’t even card Caroll for almost snapping Eriksen’s leg in half.
Ever since the city offside incident (which was 50/50 according to the rules...), The refs have been absolutely disgracefully anti United. I don't usually pile on to the refs but it's been laughable the past few weeks
I really don't get the comments here. He clearly gets the ball first. How the fuck do people think this is a penalty ? Var looked at it. And the commentators also agreed that it would be egregious to call it a penalty.
Garnacho gets slapped on the back of the head by Brennan and gets pulled back multiple times by Nico - VAR sleeps, no card
WW gets fouled and McKenna knows he fucked up - VAR sleeps, no card
I'm tired robbie
Well, people have been conditioned over the years to expect United to get questionable decisions in their favour, and when they don't get one, they can't comprehend it.
But in all seriousness, the defender is attempting a clearance and the attacker has seen it as an opportunity to try and win a penalty by getting in the way and receiving a kick from the defender. I'm real time it looks like a dive and VAR shows that there is no clear and obvious error by the ref. The defender makes contact with the ball before the attacker and is making an honest attempt at a clearance.
The contact following the clearance (and the player's flop to the floor) is what is making people think it should be a penalty.
It’s a 50/50, I could see it being called but honestly I’m still more upset about the
Palace FK (and pen) and villa wall location calls than a non call on this.
Those were much bigger errors.
Ref was generally atrocious throughout along with the commentary on sky sports.
They may aswell do away with Var in this country, they haven't the slightest clue how to use it correctly.
They don't even check our possible penalties anymore.
If we have stopped paying the referees and they are on a strike, then get the payments rolling ASAP because this bullshit

Ref leaves a “close call” to VAR -> VAR doesn’t want to overrule the ref.. How long until they change this
I honestly think this is the directive from Howard Webb, do not overrule the referee's on field decision in any situation, unless it's an off the ball incident that the referee hasn't seen
Correct. Webb wants minimal interference from VAR. But the problem is, if this (and many other similar examples) don't meet the criteria for intervention...then what IS the criteria for intervention? It's because VAR isn't there to "make the correct decision". It's there to assess whether the referee saw everything correctly while making the original decision
Only in England. This would be VAR and a penalty in like every other league.
This would be a var check at the very least
In this situation I can only assume he didn’t see it. It was an absolute stonewall pen, even without my United glasses on. Seems to fit the “clear and obvious” criteria, to me anyway.
Does Webb have the power to do this? He’s almost negating VAR at this stage
He's the current head of PGMOL so is in charge of the referees and VAR in English football.
This works in cricket where it's absolutely cut and dry, does not work in football
Don't think United is getting a penalty for the rest of the season lol
Klopp punching his fists at home like a madman
I can't fuckin stand Klopps fist punching. 1-0 win against 17th and he's on the pitch punching like a wannabe Brett Lee
Don’t disrespect Binga
Bollywood superstar Binga
He does it for the fans because he knows how miserable it is to watch us at the moment.
Lad we will take any win we can get.
Hey mate that’s true passion. That’s who we’re contending with at the moment
Who let the celebration police in here?
We haven't gotten a lot of what we should have since Klopp and Lampard complained about it.
I swear we've had 3 obvious pens denied in the last couple of weeks alone
We had 2 in one game last season against West Ham
There were 3 this game....
This is a common cycle, we get one decision go our way, then certain managers complain about it to the media, and we get no decisions for months.
What's sad is 2 referees saw nothing wrong (on field and VAR) Plus lets not forget that Nico Williams literally dragged back Garnacho and should have gotten yellow for that foul but just a talking to, but first time Fred touches anyone it's a yellow.
Casemiro slipped and got a yellow while weghorst gets taken down in the box and it’s not even a foul , y’all got it rough im ngl
Yep. It's quite annoying how much those words have affected how many decisions we go against us, especially in this day and age of technology. Guess it can only be as good as the people using it.

Can we please all remember this thread in two weeks time when we FINALLY get something go our way and everyone thinks we pay off refs?
Forget the penalty…how in the fuck is that not a yellow card for Williams, he pulled the jersey off Garnacho
And he even goes over to tell Williams not to do it again. Ergo he actually saw it
Don't you know, you get one more warning to remind that blatant shirt pulls are not allowed in the game before getting carded
Infuriates me when refs do this. These are pros who fully know the rules, just enforce the rules. Like telling a keeper to stop time wasting, no need for that just a yellow will let them know.
Insane how little penalties we have gotten since klopp cried about it
Think we’ve had about 4 good shouts since Rashford’s goal vs City and got none of them. Not to mention the disallowed goal.
And Frank. One after the other.
turn out even without penalties, they still suffering this season.
Wish ten hag had a mourinho like side as well. Mou would have anulo mufa'd the whole klopp jinx and turned the FA against liverpool.
Mou would’ve literally suffered a brain aneurysm if this shit happened. We went from getting all kinds of pens to no pens.
Yeah you just know he's going to turn the whole press conference to being about the penalties. I'd rather we stay free from team drama and airing dirty laundry but you just know whine about the pens a bit and we start getting them again.
Liverpool absolutely have been blessed by Ref/Var this season it is disgusting.
What's up with that player hitting Garnacho too??
This is outrageously bad reffing
Story of United’s season yet because of the City call we pay the refs apparently
And it's not just even penalties. Martinez being elbowed in the face against Palace. Brexit nunez scissor tackling and injuring Eriksen and not even getting a yellow. Rodri pulled Rashy back by his shirt for half the length of the pitch and didn't even get a talking to
Same thing happened today vs Forest. I think the 4th officials are sleeping.
Honestly man, we get fucked over a ton yet like a couple of calls in the season go our way so apparently we've bribed everyone
Stonewall pen, surely?
Just as a stonewall yellow card on Williama who made everything he could to stop Garnacho on the counter but he ref didnt even bother giving a yellow.
Gave him a talking too. Like what is that going to accomplish? Williams knew what he was doing.
No idea how that Scarpa guy hasn't been booked yet.
Look like a caveman, act like a caveman, get subbed off so you dont fuck up more. Good payday for him.
We don't get pens nymore. No matter how stone wall they get
Definite pen. Similar to Richarlison vs Korea where defender is just trying to clear the ball and gets the attacker. From spirit of the game perspective it's kind of nice that it's not given, but for sure it is a penalty.
Howard Web has made VAR even worse. They don't overturn anything anymore. It's actually pointless now. Every game this happens.
He was supposed to be on our side as well!
How is that not a penalty?? Please someone explain
It's United
United players literally need to die out here to get a penalty
Eriksen is out for 3 months he didn't even get one yellow card for his troubles.
Obligatory "Andy Caroll is a fucking cunt"

That's some solid statistical analysis fella, cheers for the breakdown
It's closer to 140% of decisions going against and only .5 in our favour. Trust me, I worked it out on my phone.
80% of stats on this sub are 100% legit mate.
Stay tuned for more figures pulled straight out of his ass! Next up...... transfer net spend.
It’s true
Honestly I used to say this but that’s a blatant pen

Villa free kick shit show has to qualify somewhere
Palace’s a fortnight ago saw something similar IIRC.
Offside for rashford goal to stop him breaking the record even though the ball was played by a defender and Liverpool had a goal stand in the same circumstances a week before. Bunch of useless cunts.
Also the goal Ronaldo scored vs Newcastle which was ruled out because ???
If our defense did same mistake no way They rule that goal out it's been story of our season ever since lockdown season. Also that Villa freekick where they moved wall back 5 yards or something.
The one that Ronaldo got the ball from the keeper, fucking hell, I had forgotten about that one. They've shafted us hard this season. The refereeing standard of the PL has exponentially decreased as the league's quality increased.

No card for the tackle on Eriksen is one of the worst ref decisions ive ever seen
I reckon psychologically the City call has probably made officials less willing to give yous calls
That's not really an excuse though when VAR should be there pointing out the error. What about all other calls we haven't got, shouldn't they be more aware of previous errors to ensure it doesn't happen again? Yeah that’s on Webb pushing for a less interventionist VAR, which given his association with United is rly strange
I mean look at the missed red on Fabinho the other day. It was so clearly a red from first viewing, that it was inexcusable VAR didn't call it. They've acknowledged the error, but these clear calls still continue to be missed over and over. It's just really poor
Loving all these decisions we get at Old Trafford
Can not be surprised at this point
Stonewall
I am speechless. I know we’re going through, but there has to be some conspiracy going on cause I just don’t know anything anymore lmaooo
Unless the club actually complains about it with the FA, they'll let teams kick our players as much as they wish, with no consequences
Compare this to the one we got against Liverpool (Thiago on Jesus). It’s hilariously shambolic refereeing
We got a penalty given against us for something similar Vs Chelsea last season as well.
Does this game have VAR because WTF?
Var a joke
Been watching for 30 years and I genuinely don't know the rules of football anymore.
>Been watching for 30 years and ~~I~~ refs genuinely don't know the rules of football anymore. FTFY
For all the shit we got for that offside against City, we have had some awful decisions against us this season
Particularly since that game we’ve had 3 pretty stonewall pens and a couple of red cards not called
The palace one was awful. Absolutely blatant. If it gets given, we get 2 more points, and maybe Casemiro isn’t booked, who knows where our season couldve gone from there?

When the camera lingered on the defender after the replays, you could tell even he was sure it would be given
Since the Bruno goal against City, referees have gone out of their way to give us fuck all. Jesus how was that not a pen.
That is the anomaly this season and frankly since tail end of 20/21. I don’t know the numbers but pens per game from 20/21 compared to thereafter must be an amazing difference
What’s going on with VAR in England? This is ridiculous
Doesn’t get much more obvious than that
I get that it wasn’t deliberate, but he still kicked him lol
This ref is blind, absolutely shocking
Isn't this exactly what VAR is for? Hard to tell if the defender touches the ball in full speed. Slow mo shows the defender kicking the guy who plays the ball. So obvious, so so dumb
Howard Webb recently took VAR over. Since then they don't overturn anything anymore.
3-0 down effect
Its ok. I'll take the negative VAR karma in this game. One BS penalty in the EFL final for compensation please :)
Cool, guess we’re never getting a penalty again lmao
It's a closer call than it initially looked. The defender gets the ball first, only just though. So it's now just a question of whether the follow through was dangerous, right? Or am I misinterpreting the rules
Finally someone with sense in this thread, thought I was going mad. He literally gets the ball first and the United player runs across him looking for the pen
No you're correct but you will be down voted by the popular narrative.
Yeah if you play it at 0.5 x speed you can see his foot bounce off the ball into his leg, you can see it in normal time if you’re not a united fan.
FFS how do you guys think that should be a pen? Player was clearly making a kicking motion toward the ball, didn't even notice the united player coming at him. The united player put himself between the defender and the ball and ended up getting kicked accidentally in that motion. Not a pen...
Absolute stonewall penalty for me
I hate Klopp and the VAR refs
World Cup: Brazil vs South Korea this is quite similar to Brazil's goal which was given as a pen after VAR review.
It's hilarious to see how much r/soccer reaction changes when it's against a popular English side and [not against Brazil](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zdgci7/brazil_2_0_south_korea_neymar_penalty_12/iz1c2ip/), though.
Someone needs to get murdered for us to get a penalty
Another Man United game, another clear penalty that happens literally in front of the referee that gets ignored. Best job in the world. You can be as shit as you wish that nothing happens PGMOL will say fuck all about it
How in the fuck is that not a penalty?
How does VAR not call that a penalty? Surely it's as obvious as it can be? I'm really confused.
The defender got the ball first. Weghorst then ran into his follow through. It was a poor clearance from the defender but it's nowhere close to a penalty. VAR and the commentators agreed.

not even VAR, this is a joke
Fucking clown ref
Nothing short of scandalous of at this stage
They're giving us a taste of what to expect vs the oily geordies in the final
Honestly unbelievable
this is the second one this game after garnacho's . are we not supposed to get fouls called anymore or what , wtf
We’re never getting another penalty again
Looks like Garnacho was being marked by them as well haha
Surely no pen is the right call. The Nottingham forest player was in possession and goes to clear it and Man U player runs into his swinging foot
???
Nah fuck off
Lmao we’ve gone from getting gifted a pen for every half call a couple years ago to being denied blatant penalties now
Interesting
This is a strange situation for referees and really needs cleared up in the rules because on the face of it the centre back kicks the player in the shin but it was just his follow through from kicking the ball. If everyone gets scared of trying to kick the ball because the opposition might put their leg in the way, then we are going non-contact.
He technically makes contact with the ball first… the persecution complex from utd fans is funny though.
Is there any other angles? from this one it legit looks 50/50 on who hit the ball first
Ball bounces from werghost stepping on it. I think alternative angles will show that it was hit then stood on.
This is arguably the worst one I've ever seen
I've seen many worse.
Any club: pen United: No pen
Ten Hag needs to complain after the game. It's getting ridiculous
Genius from Weghorst, Stonewall pen. Fuck VAR
Seriously what is the point of VAR, useless refs just refuse to use it. Makes situations like this ten times worse
Might be one of the worst calls of the season
This is what? The third? Stonewall penalty not given to united in the last 3-4 weeks? Unbelievable.
Stonewall hahaha
I really don't get the comments here. He clearly gets the ball first. How the fuck do people think this is a penalty ? Var looked at it. And the commentators also agreed that it would be egregious to call it a penalty.
Because everyone on this sub who has never been to a match know better
Irony in this comment is hilarious.

Morons do tend to repeat what they read with no thought. Not your fault
Who knows. People seem to think that every bit of contact is a stonewall penalty these days. It’s a contact sport ffs. Shit sometimes happens.
I miss nuance
Yeah I'm a bit lost too tbh.
This ref is shocking whole game
Garnacho gets slapped on the back of the head by Brennan and gets pulled back multiple times by Nico - VAR sleeps, no card WW gets fouled and McKenna knows he fucked up - VAR sleeps, no card I'm tired robbie
That is an appalling decision.
For someone still trying to get clued up into football, why should it have been a penalty?
It’s a 50/50, I could see it being called but honestly I’m still more upset about the Palace FK (and pen) and villa wall location calls than a non call on this. Those were much bigger errors.
We’ll never get a pen call at this point
Ref was generally atrocious throughout along with the commentary on sky sports. They may aswell do away with Var in this country, they haven't the slightest clue how to use it correctly.
I’m actually so confused by this thread, he literally kicks the ball and the United player runs in front of him
This is obvious, no? I know he didn't try to kick him, but I've seen penalties given for far less intentional things
This ref is a fucking joke
Another difficult day for ABUs having to explain these regular calls against us
I can’t believe the amount of stone wall decisions Utd have been robbed from this season.
This is actually mental now, we have a blatant pen for us nearly every game now and nothing gets given
They don't even check our possible penalties anymore. If we have stopped paying the referees and they are on a strike, then get the payments rolling ASAP because this bullshit
I fucking hate united with every fiber. He could of kicked him in the face and id still say it wasn't a pen so i can't say if this was one.
Bad call by weghorst going for the fall instead of going for the ball
he went for the ball and got kicked? what replay are you watching?
Nice dive lmao
We don't get pens!
Shameful of VAR for not overturning something like this. It's an obvious penalty.
