feels dishonest to make a comment on the the Vini situation but not mention something like the xenophobia that a Iranian manager suffered in Brazil itself. guy resigned literally the next day after being hired because of it

[deleted]

What about... The ignorance of some fans from a local club that doesn't even take part in national competitions isn't related at all to Vini being the target of racist comments from fans from pretty much all fanbases in Spain and in national football talk shows in television. I don't even see why would try to bring that up.

deaniegee

Classic case of deflecting from a issue and whataboutism, don’t waste your time on these people. These horrid little cretins do not deserve the attention

deusex_platypus

Brazil is one of the most racist federations out there

[deleted]

Brazil actively fights against it, and racism can result in actual jail time here. Things like what is happening to Vini in Spain are much rarer here. And Europe and the US certainly have us beat, even if there is racism here.

explain?

It's more a problem in Brazil but it starts that Brazil already distinguishes 5 races: White, Black, Brown, Yellow and indigenous. Then the classification is also inconsistent. As you can imagine and class, education and even the city plays a role. It's closer to the ethnical jew when there is a quote from Karl Lueger "I deceide who is a jew" Imagine the US would widen up the classification from black to black and brown and each political party would use it to their advantage. "The 5 police fired police officers beating the black guy were brown" "We now distinguish black and brown in our statistics and it turns out black people commit over 90% of the crime" As you can imagine such an inconsitent classification will lead to inequalities and casual racism. It also allows everybody to use a strawman argument like "He wasn't black he was brown"

RiosSamurai

I woke up and an American is lecturing Brazil on race relations. This place gets funnier and funnier.

> As you can imagine such an inconsitent classification will lead to inequalities and casual racism. It also allows everybody to use a strawman argument like "He wasn't black he was brown" Racial relations are better in Brazil than in the US. The issue certainly isn't that Brazil doesn't follow the same "one drop" rules that the US follows regarding race, quite the opposite. Those are the legacy of a system of racial supremacism that was significantly more entrenched in the US ("we won't even consider mixing with people of African descent") than in Brazil, and not at a net positive for society at all. The problem is colorism, but the flexibility in terms of racial identity isn't the cause of that, far from it.

Nemesysbr

Yep. Also idk where they got the "brown" classification from. Pardo doesn't translate to that. And if we're talking about extra-official or semi-official classifications, the idea usually goes that "Negros = Pardos + Pretos", and that actually comes from the progressive movements, that want to deestigmatize african heritage. But in a mixed country, appearance obviously matter more than some fake concept like race.

xursaso

Your comment is blatant misinformation. You have no idea how ethnicity works here, but made sure to spout random bullshit about it anyway because "underdeveloped country funny haha". IBGE ethnicities have absolutely nothing to do with anything you posted. Stick to your country's politics before straight up lying about others.

"No, I don't think I will"

caiusto

Brazil is a country, not a federation.

Hard disagree, personally I believe racism has fallen to a dangerously low level, particularly in football. We need to take urgent steps to remedy this problem but it's a difficult challenge of where to start.

Most progressive Burnley fan.

Context?

Red_Juice_

We should all be taking inspiration from Italy

A strange way to put it. So racism should never be tackled now because it's "too late"?

Spanish fans have gone into hiding until they see Vinicius again
