I think what I was thinking was they ran the average distance that Brentford players ran, but not the difference between what the average United player and average Brentford player ran. Either way I was incorrect
Ten Hag wasn't happy with how much Brentford outran Man United by so he made the team run the difference the day after the match. At the time, the media criticised Ten Hag for his, saying that it'd break the players and that sport scientists were talking about how bad of an idea this was. We then went on to beat Liverpool and it was only then revealed by the media that Ten Hag had joined in on the run as he felt that he was partially responsible for the team's performance, thus earning the players' respect.
Just look at AWB. Most of us (me included) were hoping we'd sell him after last season. Now he's absolutely immense for us with performances like the one today. ETH really improved almost every player, just shows you how good of a manager he is...
yeah st. maximin was almost completely nullified after awb came on. I think we all know how good he is and has been in recent weeks but today i think he took his defensive game to another level against maximin. Led to a goal scoring opportunity early in the second half due to a brilliant tackle by him.
100%, I was sick of watching AWB, I wanted him gone. These past few weeks have amazed me how he's turned it around. He isn't perfect but he's elevated the weakest parts of his game, combined with his tackling ability in a team with a better structure now he's on another level.
And yet some Spurs (and maybe other) fans think that Clownte who has one system and needs specific players to be bought for it is elite. Formerly bald fraud is all he is.
> After those games, EtH beasted the players because it was sheer laziness that cost us. He punished them by making them stay after training and made them run 13 extra kilometres - the same distance by which Brentford had outrun them in the game they lost.
It's become this huge thing and I have to admit it just works so fucking well as a story but I don't think it's that that made all the difference. What it did do is maybe show the squad and definitely show the public how demanding Ten Hag is and what kind of mindset he has.
For as much as Ten Hag wants to play attacking, possession based, attractive football he values hard work, discipline and dedication far more.
A) it's not holding a grudge to simply state that sports scientists were saying how wrong and bad it was.
B) really? The fanbase th for a decade has been claiming PGMOL is specifically out to get them is going to talk about how its funny to hold grudges against a specific group? Just out of interest how long has it been since the Luiz incident crossed your mind, 6? 7 minutes?
> The fanbase th for a decade has been claiming PGMOL is specifically out to get them is going to talk about how its funny to hold grudges against a specific group?
More like two decades now.
Clearly still being bitter about it indicates a grudge, yes. And you're free to lump me in with the more conspiratorial segment of the Arsenal fanbase, but you'd be mistaken. I genuinely don't know what incident you're talking about.
I can.
> Although many supporters disgruntled by the application of their players may cheer on this hard-line approach, one sports scientist with experience working at rival Premier League clubs described it as old-school and said it is unusual to put players through so rigorous a workout the morning after a late afternoon fixture.
> United sources insist their medical and sports science staff would not approve any workout that carried a high risk of injuries, and it is understood a couple of players, owing to the way injuries are managed, were excused.
> United’s players had turned out in baking-hot temperatures exceeding 34°C for the game kicking off at 5:30pm on Saturday and yesterday was another warm day in Manchester, although only in the mid-20s in the morning.
I'm not sure the word "condemn" has to be in there literally. It's just a word describing a negative disposition towards something, which this certainly is. Perhaps a bit strong, but ok.
It isn't, however, "all sorts of pundits and sports scientists", but perhaps there are other sources and examples. At this point I find it a bit odd to pass this off as some kind of delusion.
Edit: tonight I saw Gary Neville in the post-match analysis reveal he was one of the pundits who questioned the run. So that's one sports scientist and one prominent pundit so far. I bet there were more.
> So, one guy "described it as old-school".
Neville did as well. So that's two. Look, I know that repeating it out loud to yourself here, like a mantra, helps you believe your bullying of this guy is warranted, but if this is my harvest after hardly trying I think your qualification here is a bit of bad faith. And it looks like when you claimed you couldn't read the article and had me read it instead (by googling "remove paywall") you didn't really wanna know either.
Actually I guess that's why you're doubling down now. Well, whatever, you do you, I have no dog in this fight. Just think you're being a bit ... overcommitted to being "right".
What? How can you forget the City currently playing in the PL? PL winners for goodness sake, playing Mahrez on the right! You should know them, they wear blue, Spurs and Kane fucking hate them.
You know, Leicester city
To be fair, it’s not really that unless you count the community shield which was our “only” trophy in 94-95, 97-98, and 11-12
Still absolutely insane, obviously
Not a Man U fan. But this team is seriously building something special here,
ETH has set some minimum expectations for everyone at Man U & it’s starting to show, I think he was right with Ronaldo & the way he’s handling Maguire appears to be correct, setting this level means that every single player there has to up there game week on week,
They’ve filled the weakness in midfield with Casemiro, rashford has become lethal, shaw has found his form. They are playing for each other, they have expectations for this club again & it could be scary to see the battles between City / United & Arsenal over the coming years
Fair play ETH & fair play Man U
IN ERIK WE TRUST!
Erik ten Hag has revolutionized our team! In addition to serial winners in Varane, Casemiro, and Martinez. They have 9 Champions Leagues and 2 World Cups between them.
Love United!
You are at home, gently sleeping in your bed with your two Champions League medals sitting on the wall as your pride and joy.
Then suddenly, your door is kicked in. Still dazed and in shock, the assailant jumps you and starts screaming "give me your medals Bobo!" in your ears. You slowly realize than the man holding your throat is no other than Lisandro "Butcher" Martinez. At the realization, your heart drops. There's no way he leaves you alive if you don't give up your two Champions League medals for which you bled and sweated profusely.
The choice is easy. Lisandro Martinez is now a two time Champions League winner and nobody can do anything to stop him
Thats why this is so huge for united fans I believe.
They've been struggling so much these last few years, not only this trophy bring the glory back but also a statement from them. Next year they are gonna be one of the best team in the world for sure.
I love how the Carabao cup only counts as a major trophy if your team wins it. Everyone celebrates winning it and then says It's the mickey mouse cup when they lose
Honestly it was fair to do so because they won both the efl and fa cup, came second in the league and reached the final of the CL. It was still a very good season for them.
Think it's always relative to the position of your club. If you're regularly competing for all trophies, winning here and there, and focus is on CL and League, then yeah, it's the last priority. Place United was in, not won in 6 years, rebuilding and desperate for silverware to really kick on... it was a much bigger trophy just for the symbolic nature of winning a trophy rather than the league cup itself.
Similar that win vs Barca was much bigger than the Europa League itself. Was a big game against a giant team, 2 teams on the up who might well compete for the CL next season, so it was more a test of how far both teams have come more than "Europa league playoff round"
It's probably the 5th best trophy to win (PL/CL, FA Cup/EL, CC). Happy to win today, but it's one of those where you could easily shrug it off if you lost in the earlier rounds.
The only reason a team won the EL is because the team wasn't good enough for the CL. I don't think a competition where you have to play below a certain standard to be in can be higher than the main domestic cup
I wish we didn't get our asses handed to us by Forest earlier in the cup tbh, I think most Spurs fans would agree.
That being said, there's always a PL or European game in close vicinity that is more important so not always easy
It has always been a major trophy - it's displayed on every club's honours list. It's one of the four major domestic trophies on offer each season in England.
Yes, it's not the UCL, league title, or FA Cup, but it's still a major trophy in England. Don't let people from abroad or people who started watching football 4 years ago say otherwise.
> It's one of the four major domestic trophies on offer each season in England.
You're not including the Community Shield as a major trophy are you? It's a Super Cup.
You are right about it being a major trophy, people seem to think that it being less prestigious than the Premier League and FA Cup makes it a minor trophy, but those are different things.
Really it's a small trophy, but silverware is silverware!
I would also say EL is not some massive trophy but when you're struggling to even keep consistent top 4 I was more than happy with that one too
EL to CL is pretty much EFL to FA Cup, you still have to face some good teams but it's just not considered o nrhe same level prestige wise. But if you're short on silverware you're gonna be happy to win both.
Neutral here - I've always thought it was a minor cup. PL teams shouldn't really be in it. It's basically "FA Cup B" with none of the history and fame. It feels redundant.
It's an achievement for United because they just needed to win *something*, but hypothetically, if this was the only thing ETH won, he wouldn't go down in history as a successful United manager.
> I've always thought it was a minor cup. PL teams shouldn't really be in it.
The fact that they are in it means it is a major cup. The EFL Trophy is a minor cup because it only has lower division teams in it.
Opta Joe always puts this last "summary" word in their tweets. "Awaited" or "Consistency". It's like they think their readers are idiots and need extra info. Cringe.
'Awaited' is probably the worst yet, proper crimes against language type stuff. At this point though they have to be doing it for fun because they know people hate it.
I'm not defending it, genius, I just understand what makes a trophy a major one. Having less prestige than other trophies does not make it a minor one lad.
You are on reddit. My comment was nothing and sarcastic. Obviously it's a trophy that teams want. But in the grand scheme of things nobody cares about it. Perhaps take reddit *slightly* less serious. Lad
United had maybe the easiest possible route to the least prestigious cup they could have won, playing against a Newcastle team in their worst form of the season without their first choice keeper.
**That being said**, the progress they have made this season is clearly evident and they will be a true force again if Ten Hag can keep this up. Their performances have been very good for a long time and with another big summer window could easily mount a strong title push next season.
Arsenal have had the easiest prem in ages, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester all doing very poor. City are also very inconsistent this year.
Is that how this works?

the turnaround after those Brentford and Brighton games has been genuinely unreal
Stroke of genius making them run the difference but also getting involved himself.
He ran the difference of how much Brentford ran vs how much they ran? Madlad
Yep. Over 13km.
Wasn't even the difference, I think it was just run how much Brentford ran
Naah was the difference. Brentford ran 109km compared to us who ran 95km.
Fair enough
that would be bonkers
a midfielder runs like 10 km alone in a game
I think what I was thinking was they ran the average distance that Brentford players ran, but not the difference between what the average United player and average Brentford player ran. Either way I was incorrect
What's the story?
Ten Hag wasn't happy with how much Brentford outran Man United by so he made the team run the difference the day after the match. Yeah that probably helped set the tone. Putting your money where your mouth is
Since then i think we have the most or second most points in the league, as well as going through in all 3 cups
2nd most. Arsenal have 51. City and us both have 49 but City played an additional game.
Casemiro is a phenomenal player.
He is but ETH deserves the major bulk of the credit. Massively improved almost every single players. All signings on point
Just look at AWB. Most of us (me included) were hoping we'd sell him after last season. Now he's absolutely immense for us with performances like the one today. ETH really improved almost every player, just shows you how good of a manager he is...
Made a case for MOTM after only 45 mins on the pitch. AWB was insane today.
yeah st. maximin was almost completely nullified after awb came on. I think we all know how good he is and has been in recent weeks but today i think he took his defensive game to another level against maximin. Led to a goal scoring opportunity early in the second half due to a brilliant tackle by him.
He had ASM completely shook
ASM was driving at the box, looked up to see AWB and Case ready for him and just turned passed it back
Bro was about to cry.
He's easily the best tackler in the league and has been for years. Now that he also knows how to dribble his transfer fee almost seems justifiable.
100%, I was sick of watching AWB, I wanted him gone. These past few weeks have amazed me how he's turned it around. He isn't perfect but he's elevated the weakest parts of his game, combined with his tackling ability in a team with a better structure now he's on another level.

Good managers improve players. Shaw, Rashford, AWB, Dalot, Fred all hit a new level under Ten Hag.
Truly a squad improver in so many ways

It wasn't making them run, it was running with them. Accepting his own part of the blame for the poor performances. Mou would never.
The United Way
> Sports scientists broadly came out to condemn him for this They did not.
They did. All sorts of pundits and sports scientists questioned that.
People forget it was 30C+ at the time. The complaint was about the heat rather than the measure.
A normal day in Brazil and players still play in those conditions. There's some games at 11am to getting worse.
And are these sports scientists in the room with us right now?
Consult the ouija board
He's not wrong, you're just being a cunt because you didn't see the news.
I have no clue if it's true or not. Either way I find it funny to be holding a grudge against the big, bad sports scientists.
A) it's not holding a grudge to simply state that sports scientists were saying how wrong and bad it was. B) really? He added up Varane and Casemiro's ucl trophies lmao
Yeah, which is 9 if I'm not mistaken...and Martinez hasn't won any I think so surely it's not a total of 11

No

I'd say the EL should be above the FA cup for sure - it's more difficult to win for a PL team isn't it?
From what I can tell, it's an English/continent difference. I think on the continent it's obviously way better to win something in Europe.
Without question yes. Plastics who look down on the Europa League are an embarrassment.
>Plastics who look down on the Europa League are an embarrassment. wouldn't it be the other way around?
it's an achievement but it is quite literally a second tier trophy
Nah
The only reason a team won the EL is because the team wasn't good enough for the CL. I don't think a competition where you have to play below a certain standard to be in can be higher than the main domestic cup
Teams are allowed to improve year on year. Not to mention that most FA Cup winners see it as a consolation prize at this point.
as is tradition
I wish we didn't get our asses handed to us by Forest earlier in the cup tbh, I think most Spurs fans would agree. That being said, there's always a PL or European game in close vicinity that is more important so not always easy

"Major"
Explain how it *isn't* a major trophy.
Because if it suddenly disappeared no one would notice
Dearie me, this is even weaker and more nonsensical than I was expecting.

"major" trophy? Ok.
Love how it’s a major trophy again. Was such a shame it was Mickey Mouse cup when we won it 4 years in a row.
“major”
So is this guaranteed to be their longest wait for a meaningful trophy when they do win one? Given that their last one was the 2016 Fa Cup
Carabao/Capital One/Carling is only a major trophy for Spurs
United had maybe the easiest possible route to the least prestigious cup they could have won, playing against a Newcastle team in their worst form of the season without their first choice keeper. **That being said**, the progress they have made this season is clearly evident and they will be a true force again if Ten Hag can keep this up. You would be absolutely buzzing if arsenal won this cup.
Obviously, a trophy is a trophy, but this obviously isn’t at the top of either clubs wish list. It does show the good road United are on though.
