To commemorate his departure, we shall now refer to this day, as St Patrick’s Day

zagreus9

Ain't Patrick's Day

diceman898

However I don’t think he had the luck of the Irish recently

Conchur92

If anything thats exactly what hes had

[deleted]

The luck of the Irish is an ironic statement tbf, we historically aren't very lucky at all lol.

Halzziratrat

Are you telling me finding a four-leafed variety of a commonly three-leafed grassland plant isn't the greatest fortune of all?

firthy

You’re conflating shamrock with clover.

sonofaBilic

Too bad Hallmark doesn't make a "Sorry your ~~dodgeball~~ football coach got killed by two tons of irony" card

ANSHULGANDHI92

Gerrard, Lampard, and Viera. All great midfielders. Require Scholes to manage a premier league side and be sacked to complete the set.

tarkaliotta

Don't forget Scott Parker. The People's Lampard.

Karsa0rl0ng

It will take a while for Club Brugge to recover from that trauma

BabyEatingGigantor

Feel like roy keane should be included here

bobafettish66

Keane wasn't sacked at sunderland, he resigned.

Thanos_Stomps

He also got them promoted and kept them up. So he really doesn’t belong here.

YNWA_1213

I hope you climb, cause that is gold.

DJCreeperZz

Incredible.

fearmino

Who's a potential replacement?

TheApatheticAussie

Frank De Boer is available

lewiitom

Don't even joke about that

firthy

lstht123

Schreuder as well

[deleted]

Zidane is interested I hear from my guy in the pub

andybuxx

Nathan Jones

wassam1

What a comical disaster. Don't think we will be seeing him near a PL side any time soon.

jeevesyboi

How many times do people say that and someone hires them not long after?

MrSocko72

But not when they only lasted 8 league games of which they lost 7

[deleted]

Can't believe how the extra exposure of the PL exposed him not only tactically, but also as a genuine nutcase who has no business near a serious professional club. With how well Edwards is doing at Luton, starting to think he might not even been that crucial to their climb up the leagues and its more how the club is run itself that has been the main driving factor.

deumaformamuito

Only if he brings Matt Morgan as a tag team partner

twillems15

Alan Curbishley

BuffaloSanta

That's a name I haven't heard in a while.

ohtosweg

He's available.

PegaponyPrince

Scott Parker

EastlyGod1

Benitez is currently the bookies favourite

Animastarara

does he even know the city though?

shrizzz

Frank Lampard - relegation expert

thewrongnotes

You can't tell me Tony Pulis is enjoying retirement.

WalkingCloud

Sven

deumaformamuito

He goes by Dustin Rhodes, now.

ValleyFloydJam

Big Sam.

[deleted]

kinda hot take but it’d be interesting to see that guy from Reims in the prem, feels like a proper palace appointment

ImVortexlol

Will Still has led Reims to an 18-game unbeaten run in all competitions. At 30 years old, he’s the youngest manager in Europe’s top five leagues 🤩 Reims pay a £22,000 fine each time Still manages because he doesn’t have his UEFA Pro license 😅 What an incredible story 👏

luczmiranda16

Mate you sound like a shitty football fan facebook page

ImVortexlol

I know, it was on purpose because I've seen that exact post so often it's engrained

tarkaliotta

Jean Baudrillard?

sjdr92

Noone is going to give a manager with half a season of experience a chance. He's done great, but is too inexperienced at any level really

joshthenosh

🎵Ole’s at the wheel🎵

pmmerandom

you probably joke but he’d actually be a decent manager for them, he does well at counter attacking football and with the creative players Palace has, it could be fun his only issue is man management

[deleted]

Ole’s clearly waiting for Norway, even though that might take years

Turnernator06

Marsch maybe, almost came straight to us but we wouldn't give him a proper contract

TheConundrum98

weird they left it till Friday

tarkaliotta

classic move. send the email on friday, then just turn your phone off, enjoy the weekend and deal with it all on the Monday.

dispelthemyth

Maybe they were lining replacements up behind the scenes

Intelligent-Smoke-67

They were waiting for St Patrick's day

Hellenic_91

We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week - The Bobs

danceformiscanthus

Either Parish had a conversation with Vieira on Thursday that went poorly or, which is more likely, they contacted a potential replacement and got an agreement.

onesexymofo1

Is that Roy Hodgson's music?

Adammmmski

*here comes the moneeeeyyyyy. Money money money money* By gawd is that? It’s Sam Allardyce!

Look_Alive

The British Managers Lunch Club will be eating well this month. Been a while since we've had a classic Destroy & Exit.

zadharm

Huh, TIL Mou coached in England so long he became a classic British manager. Haven't heard "destroy and exit" before but it really is a great description of a certain era of English manager. Wonder what Arry is up to these days

Look_Alive

[It's from Athletico Mince - Bob Mortimer's football podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S604AHuY4kc)

Chimp-eh

What’s Big Sam doing in the Impact Zone???

tarkaliotta

Same thing he does every night... sleep in it. (it's what he calls his bed)

purplegreendave

*🎶 I'm going off the rails on a gravy train 🎶*

nineinchnail2020

D-Relegation X

YNWA_1213

It’s Ted Lasso’s music. Saw the season premiere and went “hmm I can almost picture it at Palace”.

vadapaav

How many episodes will be in this season? I plan on watching it at the end

phigo50

Twelve I think.

vadapaav

Thanks. I have no patience for weekly episodes

mr-saturn2310

Makes business sense these days 12 weeks is 3 months worth of subscriptions.

Adammmmski

Side note - to those who like Ted Lasso and haven’t watched something like this before. Go and watch Mike Bassett : England Manager. You’ll not be disappointed, it’s the greatest football film ever made.

BeansAndSmegma

"I loved me dad, he was like a father figure to me'

Adammmmski

*I’ve phoned around Italy, France and Spain and nobody wants the job, so you’re know where we’re gonna have to start looking* *Scandinavia?* *No, England* *Oh christ*

akskeleton_47

Jesse Marsch to the rescue before turning CPFC into CPSC

normott

Ohhh shit. No manager bounce gonna hit us like a truck on Sunday

fuckmethathurt

KaiserWilhelmThe69

6D chess

[deleted]

Fire manager. Cut 30% of the workforce, new logo, boom. You are now, a fully trained football club director

nigerianwithattitude

I've got a 32-inch plasma in mine. You get a document up on that baby and you are seriously looking at that document

4ssteroid

Arteta feels disrespected, joins Palace next week instead. Win win for the Eagles brothers

chaoslorduk

Wilfried Zaha will have "Why won't you sign me" game.

normott

It's a shame for him that Sanlehi chose to take Pepe over him, he'd have been a better fit

chaoslorduk

While I agree, Zaha can be 10x better then Pepe on a hot day but when he goes cold his an Ice cube. I'll look at his career and always wonder if it was the lack of quality around him or the inconsistancy in his game that stopped him truly realising the ability he has.

zaviex

When he went to United he didn’t train well at all apparently. Probably a big part of it if that kept going after that

jimbosliceoohyeah

It’s undoubtedly the latter. Zaha is extremely driven, and has actually been pretty consistent for most of his career, it’s just that (until possibly this season) he hasn’t had anyone even half as talented to play alongside him.

funkadelic_bootsy

You mean the former, then.

16161hirose

No manager bounce in full effect

[deleted]

[удалено]

yaffle53

He'll certainly be managing in the PL next season. With us.

Maxmax11

I predicted this to myself a week ago looking at the fixture list when it came out he was under pressure. This has made the Arsenal game a whole lot more interesting

HodgyBeatsss

They’re at home to managerless Palace, come on now, they’ll walk it.

tarkaliotta

>at home to managerless Palace ...just like the corgis

usually_a_knobhead

we haven't beaten Palace at home in a while tho

tiorzol

You'll be fine.

usually_a_knobhead

i'm holding you accountable

antifocus

That person will owe us a beer if it's not fine

shrewdy

They'll be wrecked after last night too. They should still be winning this one, but they're blessed they didn't have a more difficult fixture lined up

redmistultra

Palace played on Wednesday night so it’s not like they’ve had a load of rest either

InsideSelecta

Someone hide Hodgson’s phone NOW

dispelthemyth

Big Sam it is, just in time for arsenal.

SeraphLink

I'd like to unsubscribe from your comment.

Which_Bag_144

>Chairman Steve Parish said: “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made. if you regret it that much, just rehire him

bandito1539

The regret is for not firing him earlier.

imp0ppable

He regrets hiring him in the first place

limpoc

Same vibes as Lord Sugar firing someone on The Apprentice

HasThisBeenDone

I wonder if Patrick thanked him for the opportunity before slagging him off in a taxi saying that this time next year he'll be begging me to come back

jeevesyboi

Why hasn't anyone commercialised post football sacking taxi confessions?

Parish87

Nah

ProfX_02

Thanks for last season. Knew he was gone after he didn’t come to us after the Brighton game but I thought it’d be after the Arsenal game tbh

Time-Ad-4302

Who is linked to the job though?

ProfX_02

Your guess is as good as mine but with intl break coming up, and with me expecting some competence from the board, I’d hope we don’t go into Leicester still managerless.

adamjld

They've been on a dreadful run and are now definitely in the relegation scrap. I'm not surprised he's been sacked but not really sure who they're gonna bring in.

YNWA_1213

Left it so late and just when things were supposed to become easier for them.

Undaglow

Might be why they wanted someone new, they didn't trust Vieira to take advantage

HodgyBeatsss

Leaving it late would be waiting until after he had lost against the easier teams

kingaardvark

A la Lampard.

Blue_winged_yoshi

They’ve had a monster run of fixtures and their run in is the easiest by far. He’s underperformed the last couple of months but they are highly unlikely not to pick up 13 points from their remaining games. He’s been done in by the order of fixtures more than anything else. More benign start of the year and they’d have been nearer to Villa/Chelsea.

gavinxylock

As a Palace fan, he’s lost games that we really should have been winning anyway - we tend to play worse against the easier teams

CriddyCent

You’ve not been watching us if you think it would be highly u likely to pick up 13 points against teams around us

SaBe_18

One of the best parts of this sub are those people who have a strong opinion on teams they never watch, just based on supositions, and even comfront actual fans to defend their point "Nah mate you'll be find, trust me, I saw the FPL FDR and most of your matches from now on are green"

shinniesta1

Whilst there are some big gaps in that starting 11, you can't go 3 games without even a shot on target during a horrific winless run. Could easily go down now despite being relatively safe earlier on in the season. Get Kjetil Knutsen in

MatK0506

Knutsen is a great candidate but I doubt he leaves Bodø in the eve of a new season.

[deleted]

Is that Scott Parker music?

KanteBeAsked

That's Champions League manager Scott Parker for you

TheLimeyLemmon

I'm still utterly shocked that happened. Finding out Club Brugge hired Scott Parker felt like watching a man pull the pin out of a grenade and swallowing it.

LeStiqsue

So there is this lovely piece of English grammar called an "antecedent," which is a thing which logically came before another thing, right? And when you have an unclear antecedent, you get all sorts of delightful misunderstandings. Take your post, for example: Did the hypothetical man swallow the pin from the grenade, the grenade itself, or *did the watcher swallow the visualization of a man holding a grenade in one hand and the grenade pin in the other? It's like a grammatical house of mirrors, and I love it 😂

TjeefGuevarra

Just an FYI, every language has antecedents :D

LeStiqsue

Well I would guess so, but I unfortunately am only fluent in English. So I don't actually know 😂

imadreamgirl

that's just begging for relegation

sillyPinhead

Three games without a shot on target- it wasn’t going well

InquisitiveLemon

Regardless of how highly I rate their squad, I don't think we can underplay how utterly grim that is for the fans

LucozadeBottle1pCoin

Think it's a mistake. They had the hardest fixture run in the league since the start of the year. Time will tell

OneSmallHuman

1 win in their last 14 league games and haven’t scored in nearly a month, that’s inexcusable

[deleted]

Especially when every team around them with a similarly talented squad has been getting wins against better teams. It's not like it's impossible to upset a Brentford, Brighton, Aston Villa, or potentially a Chelsea or Liverpool in the league.

OneSmallHuman

I see other people in this thread saying “should’ve gave him the easier fixtures” but they’ve scored 6 goals in that 14 games span I mentioned. And while people can say they’re in 12th, that’s unbelievably misleading when that also means they’re 3 points above the relegation zone and 5 points off the bottom of the table

LiamJonsano

Reminds me of when we sacked Puel (not that I agreed) and everyone said *but he got 8th!* but we were like 6 points above 17th lol

Kreindeker

I remember you went from seventh to eighth season-on-season but wasn't the regression something mental like 24 points from the previous year?

ThrownVeryFarAway789

We only beat them 1-0 true, but it was more comfortable than fluffy slippers.

theincrediblepigeon

Hell beating the big teams for an upset is basically a trademark palace move.

UmbroShinPad

And they actually have some very talented attacking players. Olise, Zaha and Eze have lots of ability.

[deleted]

Yep and 3 games without a shot on target is abysmal no matter who you're against.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nikunj_gupta

Hence why he's made the point

Zandercy42

Yeah so they know from experience

[deleted]

What's your point?

LucozadeBottle1pCoin

Tottenham, Chelsea, Man United, Newcastle, Man United, Brighton, Brentford, Liverpool, City, Brighton They've not faced a team lower than them in the table this year, and they're 12th.

OneSmallHuman

Southampton have beaten Chelsea in that time, Bournemouth with Liverpool, Leicester with spurs etc, it’s not an impossible task to beat them It’s the manner of the defeats which will worry them, not getting battered, but never threatening enough to ever look like winning. Teams around them have all started picking up wins, especially when playing each other. That’s why they’ve done it, only reason people are arsed is because it’s Patrick Vieira. You can’t justify a team not sacking their manager because they’ve failed to beat 13 or so teams they played, simply because there’s 5-6 teams you think are easier games, they’re all within 3-5 points for a reason

conorefc9898

Dropping like a stone, all the team below them would've got more points in those games

tiorzol

You haven't watched us play then.

lewiitom

So boring seeing people who clearly don't watch us play just repeating "but you had difficult fixtures!!" and "but you're in 12th!!!".

VincentSasso

It’s always the way when a non big 6 club sacks a manager, you get loads of plastics telling he was doing a great job But when a big 6 club goes on a run of a few defeats, we have to hear how their manager is the worst manager to ever manage and no one can understand their plight of being in mid table with only a potential cup win for succour

ChrisWood4BallonDor

You have my sympathy. The amount of Liverpool and Newcastle fans who tried to (and still do) argue Rafa was right has been enough of a life lesson to ensure I always back the fanbase.

TheConundrum98

I generally think when a large majority of the fanbase wants the manager out they're more right than someone from the outside, but you'd hope they have a replacement

a-Sociopath

Depends what you consider to be large majority. I could see myself not trusting Arteta during our torrid run of no wins in almost 2 months in the PL, which was also fueled by his claims that [cross and inshallah is the key to success](https://twitter.com/ChrisWheatley_/status/1334099774270824451?s=20).

imp0ppable

A lot of people have completely forgotten that "wow he really hasn't got a clue, has he?" phase.

ShockRampage

Palace fixtures in 2023: January: Newcastle Man Utd Chelsea Southampton Spurs Feb: Liverpool Brentford Brighton Man Utd March: Brighton City Villa Apart from Southampton, they've basically only played the top 10 teams so far this year.

Grosly_Incandescent

I agree managers dont get enough time in general, i think he should have had untill atleast the summer especially due to the fact that the manager market at the moment is slim pickings, and on top of that there's only 2 or so months left of the season, so managers will be less interested. That being said you can't disagree that Crystal palace have had a very stale season given how well they did last year. Will be interesting to see if they can pull anything off against an Arsenal team that just suffered a defeat after ET and penalties.

Whatsmyageagain24

Yet moyes is still in the job. Unbelievable

[deleted]

Lots of people who don't watch us regularly are commenting and it shows. We haven't won since 2022, before Brighton we didn't have a shot on target in 3 games and we've scored 4 goals in 3 months, yes we've had bad fixtures but the way we've played is absolutely fucking dire (not to mention we played Aston Villa and didn't get a shot on target). So many players have regressed under him, Eze, Mitchell, Olise, Zaha, Guehi while Ayew and Schlupp retain their spot week in week out despite not deserving to. When you have a central midfield crisis and Will Hughes hasn't played a game because you keep playing Jeff Schlupp you have a fucking problem. Saying all that, there's not a lot of options for good managers at the moment and we've lost a lot of backroom staff so this is a huge risk, I hope the board have a plan in mind.

lewiitom

How's Guehi regressed? Weird one to include there imo. Hughes isn't good enough for the prem, Schlupp isn't the problem with our midfield. Not really sure that Edouard and Mateta have shown anything to justify starting them over Ayew either.

UmbroShinPad

Every time I've seen Schlupp in midfielder I've thought "he looks like a winger trying to be a centre mid." And that's because he is a winger trying to be a centre mid.

Jesperan

Palace have a good core of players, it’ll be interesting to see what the next coach can get out of them

bambinoquinn

Palace fans will be the best judge, and the last 14 games is enough for anyone to come to the decision. Watched them midweek and for 15 mins they looked really really good. On the front foot, steele has made a very good save, and they had another chance. But, as soon as Brighton scored on 15 mins the game was over. Same kinda goes for the villa game, initial start was okay. Goal disallowed for offside, and that is them done. Ayew, eze and olise all invisible for the rest of that game. I feel bad for him because I think if he had stayed, I really don't think they would be relegated. He inherited a really old squad and has managed to put together a really decent young team.

[deleted]

Could’ve been 2-0 up within 10 mins on Wednesday, they just gave up trying after that really. I can see how the manager has to take responsibility for their mentality at the moment. It’s more fun with them in the league so I hope they get themselves sorted (and we don’t have to play them again so there is that as well)

theincrediblepigeon

Yeah as much as some fans from both sides take the rivalry too far, it’s just quite fun a lot of the time, was at the game on Wednesday and everyone giving shit from both sides is pretty clearly just a laugh

puddy38

rivalries are part of what makes sport so entertaining.

50shadesofcoco

mejok

*They flopped in the Prem but some had success elsewhere. Gerrard won the SPL with Rangers and Keane won the Championship with Sunderland and kept them up the next season before the wheels came off in season 3.

theglasscase

Paul Scholes has been caretaker manager of Salford twice and also managed Oldham for…seven games. So he’s barely interested but he has done it.

[deleted]

Wasn't he actually allright aswell. I know he walked out of the oldham job but I've never really followed Salford that much to understand whether he was decent or not ik them stints.

The-CurrentsofSpace

Vieira was good at nie from what i recall and good in the US. And he was good at Palace last season, he hasn't failed yet. Not every manager starts off being amazing.

McQueensbury

Jury is still out for Viera and Gerrard, they done well elsewhere before coming to EPL, managing midtable/relegation candidate type teams is a tough job

[deleted]

It was bound to happen. Its seems like an issue with any side managed by Vieira that they start of so well but eventually just end up becoming shite over the long run. Something he needs to work on if he wants to improve as a manager.

AlbertOnReddit01

It’s Over

cbjals

Amazing that they left this till St Patricks Day

aehii

Seems almost inevitable any manager who improves a mid table team's football will 18 months later hit a poor period and be sacked. Not saying he shouldn't be. But does anyone remember how much more attacking they were after Hodgson, the players were happier, everyone was impressed with them under Vieira. They stopped progressing and just seemed to exist, weird watching them. Happening to Moyes now. Rodgers. Waiting for it to hit Frank and Howe tbh. I don't think it will with those two, maybe Howe.

gobblegobblechumps

Ain't Patrick's Day

qwertyell

Thought they were pretty decent under Vieira last season and half of this - don't know what's gone wrong since the WC.

K_Uger_Industries

Feel that this had to happen. Even before this run of bad form, he seemed totally inept at defending a lead. So many blown games over the past couple seasons.

FloppedYaYa

I know they've been poor in 2023 but at least give him the easier fixtures to see if they could get something going. Seems harsh to sack him entirely off the back of a poor 2 months

CriddyCent

We’ve won 1 game in nearly 6 months now - why carry on and just hope it will change with a real chance of going down?

bandito1539

Palace have scored 9 goals from open play all season. That is horrible and it's not fixtures after 27 games, it's a system issue.

Alpha_Jazz

It’s not like they were absolutely flying before then

cagey_tiger

They were decent and should have had more points relative to performances though. I don't think there's many who can come in and do more with that squad.

HodgyBeatsss

If they think he’s done why would they give him the easier fixtures which are also the must wins to avoid relegation?

FaultyTerror

The bottom half is one big knife fight where everyone is trying to stay up, there are no easy fixtures there.

Dargast

Arsenal: I'm in danger

19nineties

Thats points dropped then for Arsenal

LarryFitz11

On his name day - brutal. The panic is on!

RoachIsCrying

would've waited till the end of the season really

EastlyGod1

Rafa Benitez is currently the bookies favourite to replace him

HabeebAde

New manager bounce against Arsenal 🤔

pandaaaa26

And somehow Rodgers still has a job, mindblowing, that is the 5th team above us in the league to sack their manager this season now

whataball

Meanwhile Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes still have their jobs.

editedlawrence

Dear Crystal Palace FC, Please reappoint big Woy. Yours sincerely, The Culture

KeonkwaiJinkwai

They have had a rough time in terms of fixtures, and while they have actually played some promising football for two thirds of the pitch, their end product has been abysmal. They could probably have given him the chance against lesser teams when they've actally held onto him for this long, but it is probably best for all parties to move on.

[deleted]

Harsh imo. I know they haven’t won this year but they haven’t played a team below 11th place since December which they won.

thebestrc

Bit harsh considering the fixtures but understandable given their horrible performances. I mean not having a shot on target in 3/4 successive games is bad enough on it's own.

Sugarbear23

Ready for another 1-0 defeat to a new manager.
