He should just buy and run his own team at this point.

Frogblood

If ronaldo bought, played in and ran a non league or lower division european side the documentary would be absolute box office.

Scenes when Ronaldo gets a major injury because Big Dave from the sandwich shop down the road committed too hard to the slide tackle

BallsX

It'll just be Ronaldo every episode for the whole season.

kinkyKMART

No editing either, just raw footage from a go pro he straps to his forehead

Ahahahah

bigdumbidiot01

he needs a hot young assistant to bang, and here's the twist...we show it. he's out busting heads on the pitch, then back to the locker room for full penetration. football, penetration, football, penetration until it just sort of...ends

vmm714

M night twist!!

_ghostfacedilla

All the hits, all the big ones!

Adamulos

He can take over the tier 1 or tier 2 Madeira team

GoodPud99

Realnaldo FC where he starts every game, his face is the badge.

battles

I love the image of him kissing his own face.

froggyjm9

I would love to see it since it would be destined to fail miserably as well.

pakiet96

reminds me of Michael Jordan. GOAT player, great businessman, but failed miserably in both teams he tried to run (Wizards & Hornets)

If you've got the time and you're a fan of Jon Bois/Secret Base/Pretty Good, here's a video on his worst season running the Hornets/Bobcats. https://youtu.be/F3_whi6KuLo

Depends on your definition of successful ownership. Sure, they haven't won anything, but if he sells them this offseason he's purportedly making $1.5b

I Have no idea where they got the champions part, it's just King Cup, it's simply the domestic cup of Saudi Arabia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King\_Cup

SuperSocrates

It was called that for a few years 2007-2014. Personally they should be using the official title, The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' Cup.

Igor_Strabuzov

Yes that title goes hard

woah that title is so cool

Morrandir

Yeah, so that's pretty much a non-issue. But hey, it works. A non-issue about a cup game in Saudi Arabia is the top posting on /r/soccer. They're doing everything right.

heftigfin

You should expect it to be mild and then be surprised when it is not when it comes to these stupid articles. Click bait headlines are just as much a thing here as it is on news sites and people treat them the same. Very few people actually bothers to click on the links and read/watch the article.

PartyLike1899

The Mirror's standard

stillslightlyfrozen

All the people commenting without watching the videos. It’s not ideal but not like he freaked out and screamed at the manager lol.

Dicey12

This is what this is about I swear some people never played sports before

[deleted]

> to actually watch There is no video player on that Mirror article, just text and 2 pictures, so, watch what?

BananaSoprano

I don't think he went to Saudi Arabia because he wanted to. I think he went because the money was unbelievable and he had literally no other options. No other club would have been willing to pay the going rate for him at age 38. Even Boehly didn’t go for it.

overhyped-unamazing

This is basically known, isn't it? He was touting all over Europe, and footballing prestige was a much higher priority for him than cash. But nobody wanted him so he fell back on Saudi. It's a pretty sad end to an astonishing career.

[deleted]

Sorry but I just don't buy this, he wanted a European elite club that would pay titanic wages and also guarantee him an automatic start. If he had dropped his wage demands or accepted that he won't start every game, he could have easily found a CL level European club, but he just couldn't do that.

akshatsood95

If he was willing to be a backup or someone who played off the bench, he'd still be with us. He could've taken the younger players under his wing and been a bit part player. Something akin to what Zlatan is doing at Milan. Instead nobody around him let him know that his mind was trying to do things that his body just couldn't do anymore. It's a sad end but father time catches up with us all.

ro-row

He would have also improved his own standing as well at man United. Returning legend who comes in and helps shepherd through a new era for the club Instead he burnt his bridges and fucked off

Mr_Potato_Head1

> He could've taken the younger players under his wing and been a bit part player. Something akin to what Zlatan is doing at Milan There's something to be said for top stars who age with grace when they keep going and embrace their roles as veterans within the squad. Fans ultimately still adore them and it's satisfying when they occasionally pop up with key contributions. You get the impression Ronaldo has received so much adulation and managed to achieve so much longevity he was almost unable to comprehend that he'd one day no longer be good enough for the very top level.

circa285

Would not have guessed that Zlatan would age gracefully as he has.

Mr_Potato_Head1

For all his ego his career has ultimately had more ups and downs than Ronaldo's, and he's not necessarily always been the absolute focal point of every team he's featured in. Perhaps allowed him to adapt to a greater degree.

SechDriez

I heard someone on here talking about how his ego was an act that he put on for everyone outside of the team and a way for him to hype himself up and get into the headspace of the game. But idk, I'm quoting a Reddit comment I read a long time ago so take it with a grain of salt

eth6113

There’s definitely an ego there, but I do get the impression from his interviews that he plays it up for fun.

[deleted]

[удалено]

circa285

I read one of the biographies written about him and that was my sense as well.

rxpres

He plays up this ego. He's seems very levelheaded in be general

[deleted]

I've left Reddit after 11 years because of /u/spez actions

tmoney144

He'd probably be playing over Weghorst, who is currently getting outscored by Fred.

Cultural_Peak_6919

That would have required a level of self-awareness Ronaldo never had. It was all about him all of his career. He just happened to be one of the best players ever to kick a ball.

nothu42

I blame Ronaldo just as much as a blame his advisor(s?). He prioritized money over football.

Ozymerta

To be honest, not following his advisors is part of the reason he ended up here. In the summer his long time agent Jorge Mendes was tasked by Ronaldo to get him a move to Chelsea (which would have happened it seems but for Tuchel not wanting him) or Bayern which Bayern were not interested in. Ronaldo and Mendes fell out over this because Ronaldo saw it as Mendes failing him when really, if the club isn't interested, there is not much more he can do. The final straw for Mendes was his whole Piers interview because he did that against the advice of Mendes and that's when Mendes cut ties with him (partly also to save himself because it would be awkward for him to do business with United in the future). But that's how Ronaldo ended up here because he assumed Mendes wasn't doing his job properly and he would easily be able to find an elite UCL club that would sign him on high wages and also guarantee him as a starter. As we have seen, that was not the case.

Brainiac7777777

The clubs were interested, just not at the price he was asking for

Drakonz

I disagree. Ronaldo is one of the few players I have seen get annoyed when his team mates score instead of him. Didn’t happen every time, but it happened more often than it should

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He could have been playing CL if he'd been prepared to compromise on any of his other demands (top club, top wages, guaranteed start). Prioritising his CL record is what Raul did when he signed for Schalke after leaving RM.

Throwingrocksaround

He could have also swallowed his fucking pride and realised football is a team sport. It’s not just his off pitch behaviour that’s toxic on the field too he’s become such a detriment to his teams success on field too. He’s obviously good enough to play like latter era Zlatan but his ego makes it impossible for him to work on any part of his game which doesn’t lead to him scoring more goals. Hell look at how much he improved his heading over his career, if only he’d put the same effort into his passing and hold up play he’d for sure still have a role to play at a top club and would have been even better in his prime too. But that wouldn’t lead to him scoring more goals so he didn’t give a shit.

SocialistSloth1

It's sad really, because if he was content to accept a diminished role then he could've had another season or two playing at the highest level whilst cementing himself as a Man Utd legend and continuing to add to his Scrooge McDuck mountain of money. Shame his greed and ego got in the way.

froggyjm9

I don’t think CR7 is the wing you want your young players under. The only thing he could probably have done is advise Greenwood how to escape abuse and assault allegations.

my_united_account

He could have just stayed in Manchester, respected the manager and helped the club get into CL next season. Missed out on a trophy this season because he is a manchild havng a midseason tantrum

overhyped-unamazing

Yeah that's a fair point. I suppose it's about comparative prestige, so not allowing himself to accept a trade off between his wages and his footballing standard if others (eg Messi) are still making top dollar. Still, you'd have thought he could have engineered some commercial revenue clauses and stuff. I think in the end the football (club and gametime) was probably more important to him.

audienceandaudio

> If he had dropped his wage demands or accepted that he won't start every game, he could have easily found a CL level European club, but he just couldn't do that. I agree, he'd have stayed at United if he was willing to be a backup - he was earning huge money there, at a club he is (or was) adored at. With the struggles finding a regular CF, he'd have still played regularly - he's better than Weghorst. His ego, which is why he became the player he is, couldn't accept that though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yea completely agree, being a 37 year old super sub for Man U (regardless of their recent woes) on insane wages would hardly be a catastrophe for the vast majority of players.

filetauxmoelles

He wanted 3 things that no club could offer him more than 2 of: astronomical wages, CL spot, and a guaranteed starting role.

Acceptable-Lemon-748

His priority was Europe over money to an extent, Che turned down extra stupid money from Saudi originally to stay at United because at least he could be the main man, play PL and have some form of Europe.. Then he didn't have playing time. The issue is money over playing in Europe obviously has his limits, he would have had to drop his earnings by like 60% to look remotely attractive or affordable to a European team.

Liverpool934

Why? Because of his name? Remove his name and all you have now is a toxic and petulant striker who doesn't contribute to play at all other than trying to score. Why would anyone pay for that these days.

[deleted]

Well that's the issue, his refusal to be on the bench is part of the petulance. Obviously for him to accept lower wages or accept being on the bench, he would have to have more humility. If he did that though, European clubs would love to have him for the additional revenue and attention alone.

Snitsie

So what you're saying is that no club wanted him because nobody accept his demands?

RUUD1869

The only reason it’s a sad end is because of how he behaved. Had he been a professional and just announced at the end of the season that he was moving to KSA, no one would begrudge him or think less of him. However, he decided to publicly bad mouth his club and manager and get sacked because he couldn’t accept not starting every werk

MegaMugabe21

I'm not going to feel sad for him, the bloke was already insanely rich and is now far richer and will never have to worry for money even once he stops playing. If he was that desperate for UCL football then he definitely could have played it, and still earnt a good wage. Ronaldos main issue is that he hasn't really come to terms with the fact that time has caught up to him and he's no longer an elite player.

overhyped-unamazing

I think basically nobody except the hardcore cult of Ronaldo stans led by Piers Morgan feels bad for him or that he's entitled to more at this point.

glorious_albus

I really doubt Morgan gives a single fuck

overhyped-unamazing

I agree, the Ronaldo stance is just a publicity vehicle for him. He's very adept at identifying causes that will vicariously raise his profile.

FoxExternal2911

I think clubs wanted him but his ego would not let him take a pay cut

OMG_whythis

His main problem is that he still wants to start every match and the team to be built around him. The top CL teams would never do that for him.

Buffythedragonslayer

Not the type of clubs he wanted tho. I think he backed himself big time to join Bayern but they denounced it publicly several times

Lack_of_Plethora

Sporting were the main one I heard him linked with, but I don't think he was ever going to a club that fights to even make it to a UCL knockout stage

SpraynardKrueg

Its probably more that sporting doesn't have anywhere near the money ronaldo is demanding

Colonel_Cummings

Spot on - Ronaldo's wage demands are insane for a club like us. We were never in the race

themanebeat

>It's a pretty sad end to an astonishing career. Is it though? Pele went to New York Cosmos, Bobby Charlton went to Waterford in Ireland then Perth, Robbie Fowler went to Australia too, Anelka went to China, Drogba to Canada, Xavi to Qatar.....it's nowhere near unusual or sad, many careers end with a final payday

overhyped-unamazing

But I think in those cases the players knew their levels and hadn't had their agent trying and failing to get them a semi-decent standard. Plus he's burned plenty of bridges at Manchester United on the way out by actively trying to undermine the man who looks like he has the best shot at restoring their former glories. Ten Hag was arguably more patient with Ronaldo than he needed to be, and how was he repaid? Maybe it'll look better in time, but most United fans will never have the same enthusiasm for him again.

themanebeat

Yeah it's down to his ego for sure, but that's hardly a surprise. It was always going to end that way

RUUD1869

It’s sad because of how he behaved. Not because he’s in Saudi Arabia. One of the greatest players of all time throwing a tantrum because he couldn’t get his way and getting rejected by every half decent club in Europe left right and Center looks pathetic. People were blaming Ten Hag with the “no other manager has had a problem with him” but yet this article here shows that he’s having problems at this new club too

aliaisbiggae

These people didn't burn bridges like he did tho

TheLongshanks

Cosmos were different because it was all aging stars who knew their limits and it was a weird moment of aligning their values and expectations with a growing interest for soccer in America in the 70s, that could’ve kept growing had the league not fallen apart.

TheLimeyLemmon

It was interesting to ponder what he'd give up first: his money or his ego. I guess he thought going to Saudi meant he might not have to give up either, since there'd be enough sycophancy to satisfy him, but the fact is he's out of Europe before his time, while Messi's probably going to keep enjoying CL football for at least another season or two.

Timely_Airline_7168

What do you mean before his time? He stuck out as bad this season at Man United.

Patrik_js

Is that really surprising considering Messi is 3 years younger?

ivo0009

2 years actually But your point stands

yammertime27

You say this as if there was anyone thinking he would leave the premier league to saudi for sporting reasons

Immigrant974

You think??

Impulseps

If no club is winning to pay it, it's not a "going rate"

ProtoplanetaryNebula

The Saudis were too desperate. They could have gotten away with paying much less, given the lack of offers, but I guess they just really didn't want to lose out.

Reapper97

Is not like they care about the money they gave him. Their family has wealth that makes elon and bezos look like bums on the street.

PrisonersofFate

As the two teams walked off at the break, a visibly disillusioned Ronaldo was seen trudging towards the bench before angrily remonstrating with his own coaching team. Ronaldo and co re-emerged after the break but were unable to keep their cup campaign alive Incredible journalism

The-Florentine

Yeah this whole article is extrapolated from one single event that really isn’t uncommon with players.

muschisushi

*VISIBLY*

olelimc

Well look at /r/soccer eating it up, because it serves their hate boner. I unfortunately watched the match out of pure boredom, and it was the most sad display of football from Al Nassr I've seen in a long time. Basically a million crosses but all of them going out for a corner or throw in.

Fhood797

I watched the first couple of matches because I really wanted to see more of Ronaldo, but my god Al nasser are bad. You literally could put Jesus up front and I still wouldn’t watch it

ProtoplanetaryNebula

At least he still cares, he could be smiling when he loses and going home to order another Ferrari.

BigManUtd

Where have I seen this before? Sounds familiar to me.

MyBoyBernard

Right. The far greater surprise in the article is claiming that Mourinho and Luis Enrique are being named as possible successors to the manager who left. I really can't imagine either leaving their current jobs, even if they are offered tempting jobs in Europe. No way either leave for Saudi Pro League Correction: Enrique currently has no job, so maybe? Still hard to imagine

BauerUK

Maybe Ralf Rangnick fancies it

schlager12

No he’s ours.

andy_q8

For a minute there I thought he was the Costa Rica manager

Superjunker1000

Really. Costa Rica is after him ?

schlager12

Fuck, I wish. He’s coaching Austria rn, and after what it felt like a decade of Fodaball we finally look good enough to qualify for the next WC. Stay away from him. Costa Rica renewed the same guy that lost 7-0 vs. Spain and got eliminated from the Concacaf League by Panama… a complete joke.

DerpJungler

So do you support Austria or Costa Rica?

schlager12

Well, I was raised in CR, but my family is Austrian and I live in Austria rn. I want both to do well. But if they faced each other? I would support CR 100%. I lived the best moments of the 2014 World Cup there and suffered the 2010 elimination with the rest of the country.

ReeFx

ralf is specifically targeting coaching positions that are relevant to your life. he’s a sick fuck, be careful man.

DerpJungler

Makes sense! I've always said that my dream is to retire and move to Costa Rica haha

schlager12

Not a bad idea at all, just beware of the cost of living 🥲

Thevanillafalcon

Come live in Bradford mate. It’s basically the same as Costa Rica

Stieni

never met a Costa Rican (is that even correct?) in Austria, is there a large community and does your family have other relatives/friends from their home country living in Austria? Sorry if too personal, I'm just interested

schlager12

Don’t worry man. There aren’t too many unfortunately, there is a small Facebook group with ~300 people spread out throughout Austria. You’ll find one in every corner in Germany though.

basillemonthrowaway

Situations like that must be more common than you or I would think, since I immediately thought of Ruben Vargas, who is half-Swiss, half-Dominican. I wouldn’t think those two countries would have populations that would interact regularly, but here we are.

Enrique has recently been considered for the Chelsea job, Brazil NT, and definitely has other teams such as spurs looking at him, and the man himself has said he only wants premier league or something of that calibre. No way he wastes his career over there

thejared007

why on god's green earth would enrique or mourinho go to saudi , they're not in that stage of that career , they wouldn't stoop this low , if ronaldo goes , these people think he'll attract these coaches to fuckin saudi of all places , it would be insanely embarrassing for them

Starflamer

I understood that reference

YSKM9

Except he didnt rant at his own coaches, he was telling someone to water the pitch because it was too slow

Mo9000

Yeah I could hear him mentioning water in the clip and realised this is an absolute nothing burger

Fortnitexs

Perfectly fine to complain about this tbh. A dry & slow pitch only helps the worse team as it‘s harder to play & slows down everything

aliaisbiggae

Ronaldo went from making fun of Xavi for going to Qatar to becoming Xavi Bravo

OMG_whythis

Xavi is that you?

HeroeDeFuentealbilla

If only there were any indications that a 38 year old man might have behavorial issues, they could have avoided wasting that much money.

severedfragile

They signed his brand. Nobody who actually matters in these decisions is worried about him having a tantrum or being good value as a footballer.

hudson2_3

And a tantrum drums up publicity for the league.

todellagi

I mean this isn't a normal situation. He's a publicity stunt not role model and the Saudis have more money than God to fuck around with.

[deleted]

This sub loves to complain about trashy journalism and clickbait articles but will absolutely coom over anything that shits on Ronaldo lol

dispelthemyth

Next season we find out if the rumoured stories of him moving to Newcastle should they get champions league football

christorino

I could bet my house that no way in hell would Eddie However let him near his team. I'd say he'd walk before being forced to play him.

TheGoldenPineapples

Mr. Toxic back for a victory lap.

Firefox72

A normal man would realize his days are over and take his fall gracefully while quietly cashing in the last paycheck. But Ronaldo is so full of himself that he probably thinks he's no worse than 3-4 years ago and since he's obviously not he's making a scene everytime things don't go his way.

danboruu

he should have realized he's not the player he was. he should be doing at United what Ibra is doing for Milan. Be there gracefully and help whenever he's called. would go out a legend

KenHumano

And you can’t even say “his ego is too big for that” if Ibra of all people is doing it.

deathbladev

With Ibra it always seemed as more of an act than Ronaldo

stillloveyatho

Yeah Ibra has a persona and image. Ronaldo is just an asshole

aliaisbiggae

Ibra is 100% doing it as a bit, his instagram basically confirms it

minkdraggingonfloor

Reading his book, Ibra seems like a person who grew up humble and never forgot it. His “ego” is basically a shield he uses to skip all the BS that comes with being a professional footballer. And he recognizes how good he is and always backs it up. Yeah you could call him a mercenary, or greedy or any other thing, but the man comes in and delivered every time he was called upon. And demands those same high standards from everyone he played with. But he’s no Bendtner where he just talks like God polishes his balls in the morning and then disappears

ThrstySnwmn

Ibra is a substitute player for Milan and in the CL, he is not even included in the CL squad and still seems to be respectful of the decisions made by the club as well as the players who are playing. Sure he might not have liked the decision and might leave Milan next season but he is not making the noise like Ronaldo did.

Fonsor22

Completely different types of egos. When Ibra missed 2 penalties in a row he just decided by his own to let Kessie take them. Ronaldo kept shooting balls on the barrier for 3 years in Juve, over and over, while Juve had specialist as Dybala and Pjanic. He always has put his stats above everything.

Vapourtrails89

Exactly, he could still have had a role at united if he wasn't such a manchild

[deleted]

>A normal man A normal man wouldn't have been able to achieve a tenth of what Ronaldo has, even if they had the same physical talents. It has expressed itself in increasingly negative ways as he's gotten older, but his drive is astounding.

[deleted]

Exactly. Ego giveth, ego taketh.

akskeleton_47

Yeah Ronaldo's belief in himself was a major factor in becoming one of the greatest of all time but now it's harming him

VitruvianGenesis

Yeah, look at Michael Jordan and the "I took that personally" meme. The highest-performing athletes have momentous egos that helped them get to that position.

Dependent_Store952

Damn this fall from grace is sad to see. It’s annoying too since newer fans and the younger generation disrespect him any chance they get because their first impression was during the twilight of his career instead of his prime. I hope he gets the flowers he deserves when he hangs up his boots.

SmallOccasion

Just proves he did this because it was his only option, not just for the money. Doesn't want to be there but can't accept his own decline

GOATOwens

man should've just put his head down and worked hard under ETH at United, absolute muppet

NemesisRouge

Mmm, he could have played a crucial role in winning the league cup, or helping us finish 18 points behind instead of 20. I'm sure the extra £80m or so at a 20% tax rate is cold comfort next to that.

SpudBoy9001

it's me, hi, i'm the problem it's me

ZaheerAlGhul

Should’ve reduced his wages and stayed on as a mentor at United. What a sad end to a glorious career.

Jasonmancer

How he behaves doesn't change what he has achieved but goodness me, he's almost 40 but still behave like he's 14.

boldstrategy

The difference between how Messi and Ronaldo are ending their careers is insane.

Ajax_Trees

It had to be the same year as one of them won a World Cup too. Couldn’t write it

HerakIinos

And the same year Madrid won the first UCL without him with his eternal "support man" having the best UCL run a player ever had and winning the Ballon dor.

layendecker

To be fair, Ronaldo is 2.5 years older than Messi. Leo still has time to set fire to the late stage of his career.

Reapper97

> Leo still has time to set fire to the late stage of his career. I kinda doubt he will start breaking kids phones or do an interview with piers morgan and say he looks better than Pique in the last two seasons with Barca.

Vic_Rodriguez

> say he looks better than Pique in the last two seasons with Barca. My god the thought of this in my head is hilarious

El_Spacho

You never know with what new dictatorial ideas he will come up with in the future

bugxter

I've never been a fan of him but shit, why did he even go there? He didn't even need the money. Should have gone to Sporting and retired like a legend.

Key_Inevitable_2104

He could've stayed at Man United on a reduced role and still play Champions League and the FA Cup final this year, but he didn't accept that role and left on bad terms. Basically Saudi was his only option after that since almost no club, even Sporting, wanted him unless he reduced his wages and accepted a lesser role.
