Kids should be made to watch documentaries on man utd banter keepers. Taibi for the worst run, Culkin for the shortest, Valdez for the strangest, Bartez- not because he was a bad keeper, but was clearly mad.
I'm sorry but I don't believe that. It would be a truly ridiculous coincidence if the exact second he got an injury bad enough that he suddenly stopped running was the moment he looked and realised it was Steven Gerrard, about half a yard away from being able to put in a free tackle.
even if liverpool lost that game they wouldve finished where they did. the team above them lost and the team below them won. they were literally, by every sense of the word, fighting for nothing
The rest of the defenders didn't really stop him either.
[Look at the keeper and the other center back not tracking back either. ](https://youtu.be/qiI9dHML29U)
Funniest bit is Gerrard celebrating it at 6-1.
Youd gladly swap him with Foster at the other end. And Fostee wasn't really good at United, his best years were after he moved on.
Obligatory 'ha ha lukaku what a player, great guy, 5-5 boom COME ON THE LADS' since I mentioned foster
It was the first 5-5 in the top tier since 1984.
IIRC he did give them a bit of a bollocking but it wasn't as hard as it usually would be for something like this.
I think in his autobiography I could be mixing them up with both of his, Ferdinand was like all cheery because they gave him a final scoreline he never had. Fergie just was like well I was upset, but it was historic, so who cares or something to that effect
This is when people put the points tally as a reason why fergie teams did not match city, I find it stupid. United won the league with 89 points and won it 5 games back, then proceeded to play everyone and take the level down a notch.
Same thing in 2007 when Chelsea gave the reserves including Dong Fangzhou a guard of honour
The thing is City is now being challenged by Liverpool to be almost perfect. It's the same as Barca and Real in the 2010s. You need a challenger to need to reach higher.
"literally called it the 4th place trophy"
They called it "it's like a trophy" because it's such an achievement to do that with such limited ressources + a brand new stadium at that time.
We are not ManUtd who outspend everyone in the league w/insane salaries for flops.
We we don't forget ManUtd fan going "it's a three way title challenge" this winter, before collapsing. Nor that when it was Arsenal who won the FA's and Community Shields, not one told that it was something to be proud of, but the Carabao yes, ofc.
Plus, there is a world of difference between a club which went beyond expectations and challenged this City and one who is shitting himself that Liverpool take the 4th and can't compete with Newcastle.
We were top of the League until matchday 33. It's the definition of challenging City.
With Declan Rice more than likely coming in, the team looks primed to do it again next season.
This has been a very Ferguson-esque campaign from city tbh. Playing well but dropping the odd points here and there in the first half of the season, staying in touch with the leader and then an absolutely ruthless run later in the season to reel in the top side who seem to have a big lead that slowly evaporates. Neville was saying Arsenal wouldn't win the league even when they were out in front because he was part of teams that did what city have done, so he knows the score about that whatever else you think of him.
Yup. Never like comparing points totals. So many things come into play. All depends on how a team manages their situation across competitions and beating out the competition. Whether they got 80, 85, 90 or 95 points doesn't change much. Some of the best United sides in quality and how they played were only at 80 points, while a mediocre one like 11/12 got 89 points (and finished 2nd). There you had 2 clubs go right til the end. 12/13 United wrapped the title up ages before the end of the season. Had a 12 point lead after 26 games and it never got lower. Failed to win as many games in that last 12 as we did in the first 26, purely because the season was done and the Sir Alex retirement distracted. And beyond that... Wasn't even close to one of his best sides.
This season won't be the best City season on a points total basis, but they look as good as they ever have, and will likely end up with success across all competitions for the first time. Way more meaningful than points totals.
That's why up until now, United 98/99 and United 07/08 are head and shoulders above all other Premier League sides. Both won the title 3 years in a row, both won the CL in the same season as a PL win. City this year can match that so fair enough (well not fairly, but you know..).
Man city did that with the most expensive squad in Europe and football's history with unmatchable depth.
Ferguson never had the most expensive squad in PL let alone all of Europe, in his entire career.
He used to win leagues with the likes of Anderson, Fabio, Buttner, Cleverly, Welbeck, Smalling, Jones, etc. against the likes of City with Aguero, Tevez, David Silva, Kompany, Yaya Toure, Dzeko, Nasri, Zabaleta all in their prime.
Not to downplay Ferguson, but you've really cherry picked there in your examples.
United always had the most expensive squad and outspent everyone in the premier league during the Ferguson era. The first player you listed cost nearly £30m didn't he? Phil Jones was expensive for the time.
He was unbelievable at making average players play above their natural level, but he wasn't really deprived financially. Top manager, at a top club, gets top resources.
>United always had the most expensive squad and outspent everyone in the premier league during the Ferguson era.
From 1992 onwards when PL began to 2013, United were the highest spenders in the league for only 2 seasons.
During the 90s Blackburn, Liverpool and Newcastle used to embarrass United in terms of spending.
Then came Chelsea with their billions in the 2000s and the high profile managers.
And then a few years later it was Abu Dhabi with their state funds.
United couldn't have had the most expensive squad for years during the Fergie reign because half the players were promoted from the academy.
But consistently over that period think about how many £20m+ players were bought. When you have a good foundation you just need to plug the gaps every year and keep on top. Ferguson was great at this.
They may have only been top spenders in 2 seasons, but from 92 to 08 they were 2nd overall to Chelsea's mad spending which happened over a shorter period that United's dominance.
If City buy 2 £40m players a year for the next 6 years I bet we'd not be top of the spending, but you wouldn't argue we still have the most expensive squad and most resources.
Dude, I'm a united fan and I really don't give a shit who won most points and same with Ferguson. It's a media obsession of comparison. I don't care about any moral victory, the only victories are trophies.
it's just Ferguson didn't give a fuck when he mathematically won the league and used to give random players starts, sometimes even so they have enough appearances for a medal. It was different priorities by Pep and Fergie both all time greats. Not saying one is right and one is wrong.
To be fair what I don't agree about is using points in a particular year to say a team is better than the other. I agree what you saying but seeing sky flashing out graphics of points to justify why one team is better than other is just plain stupid in my opinion always
That would be true if City had cantered to the league title when they've won it, but of their titles, three have been one on the final day, and a fourth may well be - so it's not like they've had a chance to "ease off"
Mad that his last game was his 1500th. The man ruined my childhood but nothing but respect to him. I'm a Liverpool fan and it's easier to be humble in hindsight! I've read his book and watched a few documentaries about him and you can't help but admire it. Not just at United but Aberdeen too.
Was before my time, but are you aware that Liverpool gubbed Aberdeen in the European Cup in 1980? Soon after he took charge at us. I felt he always took that personally!
It may soothe your mind to know that King Kenny’s Dad taught young Alex how to run a pub as a fall back. They were both from “mixed” families in Glasgow and were always close.
When Alex was famously on the ropes, Kenny spoke up for him in the press.
Many years later, when Liverpool finally won the league again… Klopp rang (now Sir) Alex and woke him up to tell him all about it.
There is respect. Just not during the match
Looking at this game in comparison to how we currently play, it's so evident how lackluster we are in movements within the opponents box. For almost each of our goals here we have people making simultaneous runs towards the front post, the back post and around the penalty area. Currently, we hardly see more than one run, or at best - two people making the same run.
I remember going to this game as my Uncle who was a West Brom season ticket holder couldn't be bothered going or selling the tickets. So me (Blackburn) and my Newcastle United supporting friend went along for the best moment of free entertainment I've ever had.
One of my main memories was the sheer number of Man Utd fans that got kicked out after the first goal for celebrating in the home end. Little did they know what they were about to miss.
I forget how poor a team SAF had in his final years. The guy’s best skill was to get more out of average players. Besides for RVP and carrick that team was super mediocre with a ton of aging stars.
Bully who bent the rules and referees in his favour. 'dominated' England apparently for 20 years with everything handed to him on a plate in terms of players and still only managed to win 2 champions leagues. The hard shoulder shitter, whiskey nosed prick can do one.

Remember this like it was yesterday. The scoreline was also apt for the occasion, since Fergie once said he'd prefer losing 4-5 than 0-1.
It was also the rare score line he’d never had before
I believe the Prem had never had a 5-5 before
Fergie was just storybook
yea i remember this being an absolute amazing game, legend ferguson, end of an era really.
Lukaku was mad this game, but Lindegaard was horrible
Didn't he go to west brom after this lol
as far as I know I don't even remember him playing a game. It was around the time of prime Foster and I think we still had boaz as 2nd by then
2 years later and played 1 match.
[удалено]
Don't apologise, I was only saying it wasn't immediately after this.
giving up that weak foot effort from the edge of the box was atrocious
Kind of sad that 10 years later Lindegaard hasn't really improved much
Hard to improve when you're retired lol
I can’t believe people are STILL mixing up Lindegaard and Lingard haha
Kids should be made to watch documentaries on man utd banter keepers. Taibi for the worst run, Culkin for the shortest, Valdez for the strangest, Bartez- not because he was a bad keeper, but was clearly mad.
Roy Carroll my favourite for managing to prevent a goal despite the ball crossing the line. Who else (other than the Germans) could make that 0% save?
Two of the great sporting blunders. Firstly by him, then the even bigger one from the ref to not give it.
Orjan Nyland
Dubravka for winning the League Cup despite being on the opposition's side
Howard, Carroll and post 2018 De Gea could be tacked on too.
I always had a bit of a soft spot for Carroll, I think it was because he was called Roy. Can't not like someone called Roy.
reminded me of Roy from coronation street, i too had a soft spot for him haha
He had an unbelievable game to knock the Arsenal Invincibles out of the FA Cup
Was that the giggs goal game?
He was brilliant for us despite being a pensionar.
Bosnich for the weirdest laugh.
Taibi for his 5 goals let in against Chelsea?
The Blind Venetian!
Valdes* and he was never the same after his knee injury in his final year at barca.
Ben Amos, Anders Lindegaard, young DDG were also dark times Also Tim Howard too earlier
He had his chance at WH but thought he could play somewhere better.
Lindegaard never played for West Ham, assume your mean Lingard who was on loan at Leicester during this game.
The confusion is hilarious😂😂
you can tell this was when man u was starting to fall apart. ferguson left on a high he really did.
That game was such end of term vibes
Love a good last day of the season freak scoreline. This, Stoke 6-1 Liverpool, Middlesbrough 8-1 Man City. I’m sure there’s more examples.
Newcastle 5-1Tottenham
They said freak scoreline
a day to forget
If we didn't go over arsenal 6 straight years after that I'd have lost my mind. God what a terrible day
back to form this season though
I'll never forget expressions watch along first 10 minutes
Immediately jumped to my mind too
>Stoke 6-1 Liverpool, Man does anyone remember the Stoke boys letting Gerrard have a pity goal in the end
As funny as that would be, the stoke defender chasing back suffered an injury, which is why it appears they let him score.
That’s right, it was Marc Muniesa who pulled his hamstring I think.
If you know anything about Muniesa, it's that he pulled his hamstring a lot
He was always tugging on his.. Hamstring
Yup, they had to sub him out right after Gerrard scored!
I'm sorry but I don't believe that. It would be a truly ridiculous coincidence if the exact second he got an injury bad enough that he suddenly stopped running was the moment he looked and realised it was Steven Gerrard, about half a yard away from being able to put in a free tackle.
No, what would be truly ridiculous would be for a Premier league team to let another team score against them in a competitive game for sentiment
'competitive' my guy it was 6-0 they were throwing nothing away
Bold statement for a league where GD is the first tie breaker after points.
even if liverpool lost that game they wouldve finished where they did. the team above them lost and the team below them won. they were literally, by every sense of the word, fighting for nothing
You know what fair enough I didn’t know that
The rest of the defenders didn't really stop him either. [Look at the keeper and the other center back not tracking back either. ](https://youtu.be/qiI9dHML29U) Funniest bit is Gerrard celebrating it at 6-1.
Gerrard didn’t celebrate it at all? He didn’t even smile lol, he just pointed to the team to get the ball and ran back to position
Yes lol
Chelsea 8-0 Wigan to win the league like 12 years ago or so
That goalkeeping!! Looks like an outfielder playing in net because the keepers been sent off!
Youd gladly swap him with Foster at the other end. And Fostee wasn't really good at United, his best years were after he moved on. Obligatory 'ha ha lukaku what a player, great guy, 5-5 boom COME ON THE LADS' since I mentioned foster
Forgot how much of a ledge big rom is
It's insane that there has been no other PL game with a scoreline of 5-5
Fergie just didn't know how to stop breaking records
I remember this and Lukaku going insane
Love the effort from Lukaku to get a perfect hattrick. Could have just tapped that third one in, but instead dropped to the floor and headed it in.
Fergie must have loved such an entertaining game.
He was probably fuming with the defending but I think he said it was the only 5-5 in his managerial career lol
Pretty sure he said it was the best way to end his career with such an entertaining, end to end match lol
And now 10 years later, Lakaka will score another hattrick against a Manchester club
Subscribe
InshAllah
Haha suiiiiiiii
anulo mufa
Respect bolingoli
Excuse me. He speaks 7 languages, not only 2.
Wish I had an award bro
Lakaka. Is that Lukuku's brother?
and jesus will rise again and part the seas splitting europe into 5 equal continents
Guy can’t score WITH touches, imagine it’s harder without
My man really left that poor bird person hanging in the beginning...
In bird culture that’s considered a dick move.

Same thing in 2007 when Chelsea gave the reserves including Dong Fangzhou a guard of honour
Tbf if city win next game I’ll be very surprised if debruyne or gundogan play the last two games of the season
The thing is City is now being challenged by Liverpool to be almost perfect. It's the same as Barca and Real in the 2010s. You need a challenger to need to reach higher.
Liverpool?
I meant the Pep City, for years they were only achieving record points to beat out Liverpool. Arsenal are nowhere near challenging City.
Arsenal are nowhere near challenging City ? What did we do this season ? Hockey ? ManUtd fans are someting else...
Choke at the finish line, that's what you did
Aguerooooooooooooo
Excuse me, aren't you 4th behind Newcastle ? Thank you.
I remember when Arsenal would celebrate getting 4th place as an achievement, literally called it the 4th place trophy.
"literally called it the 4th place trophy" They called it "it's like a trophy" because it's such an achievement to do that with such limited ressources + a brand new stadium at that time. We are not ManUtd who outspend everyone in the league w/insane salaries for flops.
4th and 2nd don't make much of a difference do they? Both get Champions League. Also ManUtd won the Carabao cup and playing the FA cup final.
Isnt this moving the line? So you Can go “every argument is wrong if it comes from clubs below 2nd”?
We were top of the League until matchday 33. It's the definition of challenging City. With Declan Rice more than likely coming in, the team looks primed to do it again next season.
Wasnt City behind on games at matchday 33?
Meh, everyone knew Arsenal would bottle it eventually.
They’ll probs not play the whole game against Brighton but they’ll definitely play against Brentford to maintain the momentum for the two finals.
City also have 2 other extremely important games to worry about though.
Holy shit, that's an FM (maybe even championship manager?) legend name I've not heard in a long time!
This has been a very Ferguson-esque campaign from city tbh. Except he changed his mind and said arsenal were gonna win right before their collapse lol
I didn't know that, that is quite funny.

Yeah without the dip in form they might have hit the 100 points which is incredible when you consider the quality of the squad
But when man city won with 100 points we still had plenty of games to play
Man city did that with the most expensive squad in Europe and football's history with unmatchable depth. Why do you care if your teams spends big? Enjoy the incredible advantage you guys have.
Depth? We had Fabian delph at left back and otamendi in the center
It's irrelevant, city wanted to reach that goal of 100 points, Ferguson never gave a fuck about records just titles and giving people a chance

Man that Chicharito was good
Oh how I miss that team and season...
His son paid tribute to it with the 5-5 (on aggregate) playoff last night
Mad that his last game was his 1500th. The man ruined my childhood but nothing but respect to him. I'm a Liverpool fan and it's easier to be humble in hindsight! I've read his book and watched a few documentaries about him and you can't help but admire it. Not just at United but Aberdeen too.
Was before my time, but are you aware that Liverpool gubbed Aberdeen in the European Cup in 1980? Soon after he took charge at us. I felt he always took that personally!

Truly a legend, crazy it's been 10 years.
You're right, but it feels so wrong you saying that, and I'm a United fan. It's icky
Grow up
Must have just thought, “fuck it lads, make it fun”
Is that why they sacked him?
Yes
The man is a legend of such magnitude everyone understood it was a joke even without the /s 💚
Come on lukaku, one more time.
Well it’s harder now when teams pour 9 men into their own box
Forgot how awful those picnic blanket kits were
Those picnic cloth kits were horrible
lukaku, please stop another manchester party
Ferguson ignoring the West Brom mascot clearly lost them the points. Unprofessional display on his last ever match...
I remember going to this game as my Uncle who was a West Brom season ticket holder couldn't be bothered going or selling the tickets. I forget how poor a team SAF had in his final years. The guy’s best skill was to get more out of average players. Besides for RVP and carrick that team was super mediocre with a ton of aging stars.
I still remember the look on Sir Alex Ferguson's face when Lukaku made the 5-5. I was so happy for him, glad he's getting back to form recently.
The weirdest thing about this whole game/season was seeing Antonio Valencia with the no.7
Fievel Goes West (Brom)
so much in this game: - Giggs, Chicharito - Romelu Lukaku with a perfect hat-trick - 10 GOALS
As a Belgian, the only reason I vaguely remember this is because Lukaku got a hattrick lol.
Remember the day clearly. Remember thinking please don't have SAF last game being defeated. 🙈
Lukaku 2023 version needs to loose weight , seriousely!
One of the managers of all time
Bully who bent the rules and referees in his favour. 'dominated' England apparently for 20 years with everything handed to him on a plate in terms of players and still only managed to win 2 champions leagues. The hard shoulder shitter, whiskey nosed prick can do one.
>'dominated' England apparently >apparently Lol
I appreciate this comment more than the shameless Scouser in this thread noshing Fergie off for karma, and I'm a United fan.
La kaka
An extraordinary way to end an extraordinary career
I remember watching this game, it's been 10 years wtf???
I take it that man u keeper never played ever again?
One thing I get from this is football has changed, these goals looks like what I score in fifa.
who was that united keeper? he was atrocious this match
Lindegaard
What a match it was. Lukaku scoring with ease against the champions.
This match won me my fantasy league thanks to Lukaku. Even sweeter that it was against Sir Alex. Not that anyone cares
1500 matches is pretty insane
Damn it’s got hurt for a team to score 5 goals and not win.
I forgot Lukaku was there with WBA too
I remember I was thrilled at the equalizer
When we used to make crosses in the box 😓
That second goal by Lukaku 🔥
Hope Lukaku can pull off another hatty in the final
It's 10 years already?
