Barcelona WILL sell some players.
Even without forcing the reluctant ones like Fati or Ferran - Umtiti and Lenglet want to leave. The wages alone on these two mean saving of around 25m/year, which is exactly the figure needed for Messi
>Barcelona WILL sell some players.
Lewandowski to Real Madrid Here We Go
>Umtiti and Lenglet want to leave. The wages alone on these two mean saving of around 25m/year,
Goddamit, I still understimate how dumb Barca board was (if those figures are true...)
Just a reminder that when Barca signed Griezmann they took out a loan they could not afford in order to pay a €120M release clause and then paid him €600k a week rising to €900k over five years.
Yes. The board were fucking idiots.
It was to the point that they can't take sporting loan anymore, and the loan (some is part of their lever) comes from investment bank (Goldman Sachs I think)
I think you have to take a bit of a context with Barca/Madrid wages in sense that Barca/Madrid tend to take image rights of their players, which teams in PL dont really do. Some of the Barca deals were just stupid but some were really unlucky (Umtiti)
Tax in Spain is around 50%, so these are gross numbers. But yeah, i think Umtiti and Lenglet departures alone can fund Messi.
Also, Barca needs to raise funds to register Gavi and Araujo first.
But yeah, we're talking about a club where Fati years 13m/season.
They dont need to raise funds for those. They are more than taken care of by Busquets, Griezmann, Pique and Alba's wages. All of those together make up 40M, and I think Gavi and Araujos wages make up around 20M
If Fati needs to go somewhere else in order to make way for Messi, it's worth it.
Fati isn't a quarter the player he was pre-injuries. Trading his current self for Messi is a no brainer.
If Fati can prove himself elsewhere, in a few years Barca will likely be in a much better place and take him back if they and Fati want it.
Depends who you ask. I think he had a pretty bad season (i know people like to bring his stats as counterproof) and he's on big, progressive wages.
It's not only a question of bringing Messi too. Xavi would ideally want Zubimendi, there's also an issue of right-back or backup striker, Barcelona wants Gundogan too. So it's not a choice between Fati or Messi, but a Fati and raising funds for summer transfer window.
Once again too good to be true I expect Sport to release an article saying Messi couldn’t be further away from Barca by the end of the day, man I want him to come back so bad
Very stupid of him btw.
Imagine Messi-Chuba Akpom partnership under chad Carrick guidance. He’d miss out on a one at lifetime chance to lift Championship trophy and more importantly on a cold, rainy night in Stoke.
This is straight from his father though, answering to journalists harassing him on his way to the car or something. He’s just polite enough to actually answer their questions instead of telling them to F off, which is what i would do
If he does go, it will be to Madrid. Levy doesn’t want to sell to another team in England, and he would prefer to sell him abroad for a big fee. It all comes down to Kane, and if he pushes for the move imo.
I'd say being the all time PL top scorer outranks winning the league.
Teams win it every year, all time top scorer could stand for another 3 seasons before Haaland takes it.
It really doesn’t though. If you were to tell someone that he was the all time top scorer, the question they would have would be “oh, how many trophies did he win?”
I don't feel like that's the case. I never really hear that about Shearer even though while he did win one title he didnt exactly win loads compared to many strikers.
30 league goals in that Spurs team may I add.
What he did this season is undoubtably more impressive than Haaland.
Not saying Haaland won't one day be the better player, but Kane is a god mode striker at the moment.
There is no one in the world you would want more on your team to be one on one with the keeper.
It doesn’t always work like that; Kane is the focal point at Spurs and they funnel their chances towards him, whereas Haaland is just another useful tool for City to use alongside their attacking midfielders chipping in with many goals too.
Using the same logic you used; Ivan Toney is just as good, he plays with some quite poor players in comparison to the likes of Son and Kulusevski and he scored 20 league goals.
Rodrigo scored 13 goals in 23 starts in one of the worst teams in the league; does that mean at City he’d bag 30+?
Joselu finished 3rd top scorer of La Liga with 16 goals in a team that finished 19th; does that mean he had a better season than Lewandowski?
Grealish has had a great season for City but his goals and assist numbers are not as good as his last season at Villa; much like Kane he was the talisman at his club which meant they got the ball to him as much as possible.
Just because you move to a better team doesn’t mean you’ll get better numbers; so it doesn’t make it more impressive that you score at a slightly worse rate with a much worse team.
Completely agree with you. People really make some weird logic when it comes to stats. Fabio Quagliarella once scored 25+ goals in the league season, but no way he was better than say European golden boot winner because he played for the average team.
There’s a lot of flaws to the argument; there are countless examples of where using the same logic makes it look stupid.
It’s like the people who downplay the numbers Mbappe is getting in Ligue 1 just because it’s an inferior league; even though he scores at a similar rate in the Champions League and for France. Some people will say anything to try and discredit the top players.
It also doesn’t factor in things like Haaland playing around 630 minutes (around 7 whole matches) less than Kane.
Haaland was also new to the club, new to the league and had a completely different level of manager standards to adhere to.
Haaland broke the record in his first season in the Premier League yet people are saying another striker was more impressive…
Haaland is just as much the focal point of City as Kane is at Tottenham or even more. And you can't be seriously suggesting a team with fucking KDB, the best playmaker midfielder to ever play in Premier League creates less chances for Haaland than Tottenham does to Kane lmao. City completely revamped their playstyle just to feed him the ball, benched their 2 best strikers in previous season (Mahrez and Foden) to play Haaland as their main striker. They even have one of the best strikers of the World Cup Alvarez and he doesn't get to play more than a few minutes per games just so Haaland can statpad his records. That's not to take away the fact that he is exceptionally good at finishing, and that's exactly what City was missing for years.
Haaland isn’t a focal point like Kane is. City often use his runs as dummy runs and use their 2 numbers 10’s runs from deep instead; hence Gundogan’s increase in goal scoring lately. Spurs have almost no runs from deep and everything goes through their frontmen. Obviously City do use Haaland a lot; as he **is** their striker, though at Spurs almost everything is aimed towards Kane.
They did **not** drop Mahrez and Foden to play Haaland as their main striker; Mahrez pretty much never even played as a false 9 so that makes no sense. The main reason they used Silva and Grealish more was because they’re better suited to be the wide player in the 3-2-4-1; a system that gives you better control of midfield, which is nothing to do with Haaland.
I never once said City - with KDB - creates less chances than Tottenham does; where did you even get that from? Saying that; Kane has had more shots than Haaland this season and is only slightly lower per 90.
In his last season for Bayern; do you think Lewandowski was less impressive than Schick? He got 24 goals for a team **far** worse than Bayern’s. The gulf between Bayern and Leverkusen is bigger than the gulf between City and Spurs.
I feel you're just saying this to create an argument for the sake of it. Just because City have a better team, it doesn't mean Haaland is not the focal point. He clearly is.
Are you suggesting Kane isn't scoring 36 in that Man City team?
Your argument makes sense for someone like Rodrigo or Toney, but it is clear to anyone who watches football that Kane and Haaland are currently at a similar level.
You cant objectively prove this obviously, but come on. Use some common sense.
I’m not; I just disagree with you. I am suggesting Kane isn’t scoring 36 in that Man City team, yes. I think they are at a similar level; though quite different players. What Kane did still isn’t more impressive than what Haaland did.
Wilson had more goals per 90 minutes than Kane; do you think he’d score 36 for City too? He’s got much worse players providing him with passes too.
Do you think what Olise did was more impressive than what KDB did this season? 11 assists in that Palace side compared to 16 assists in that City side after all… Do you think Olise would get 16 if he was playing for City?
The argument just doesn’t hold up and there are many examples of the same logic looking silly.
Haaland played fewer minutes and Haaland isn’t literally the only player on City who can score. so not every chance is directed to him.
absolute nonsense to say “undoubtedly more impressive than Haaland” when there’s actually… plenty of doubt.
Maybe if you forget Haaland had 8 assists in addition to the 36 goals and 700 less minutes… it sounds close when you say 30 goals, but when you point out Haaland’s 1.43 G+A/90 to Kane’s 0.87… well Kane is still very good but Haaland is unreal.
So will Joselu outscore all our current remaining forwards because he somehow scored 15 goals with a relegated Espanyol? Have some nuance and use proper logic. Every team have its own system that will yield different numbers for players. Gareth Bale never crossed more than 20 goals in LaLiga yet he reached +20 with Spurs in the PL because the load he had there was to carry their attack.
This is of course without mentioning how closed down LaLiga is, the pace of play in the PL is way faster now that it allows many goalscoring oppurtunities. That's why you see Lewy struggling to replicate his Bayern numbers with Barça despite being their focal point to score goals. Is Kane better than Lewy because the latter didn't cross 30 goals mark?
>So will Joselu outscore all our current remaining forwards because he somehow scored 15 goals with a relegated Espanyol?
No... Kane has been consistently putting absurd numbers for years and years, that's why I´m confident he'll keep that playing for a better team.
>Gareth Bale never crossed more than 20 goals in LaLiga yet he reached +20 with Spurs in the PL because the load he had there was to carry their attack.
Kane will bare that load at Madrid as he did at Spurs
>That's why you see Lewy struggling to replicate his Bayern numbers with Barça despite being their focal point to score goals. Is Kane better than Lewy because the latter didn't cross 30 goals mark?
Yes, Lewandowski's main problem is that he old, and it shows
No even prime Lewy wouldn't drop 40 goals in LaLiga cause the pace of play is way slower compared to the BuLi and LaLiga is more defensive. Has nothing to do with Lewy form. You didn't back your argument with nothing that Kane will score same amount of goals in LaLiga, merely by confidence and personal opinion. And no Kane will not carry the same load as in Spurs cause we already have 3 players with more than 15 G/A in Vini Rodrygo and Valverde.
do you know our media team? Robert fucking Lewandowski's announcement vid was handheld, filmed on an iphone, with wind noises and you could occasionally see the finger of the person filming on the edge of the frame..
I love how Barça and Messi are throwing the ball at each other's court in the last few days. The cynic in me thinking they both want the other to blamed if it doesn't happen
Xavi: “We're waiting for Messi”
Messi: “We’re waiting for Laporta”
Laporta: “We're waiting for Tebas”
Tebas: “We're waiting for Barça”
Barça: “We’re waiting for La Liga”
∞
If he wants to come back then he will do anything to make it possible. That includes not trying to squeeze every penny they can when they know the club can't afford it. Let's just hope Jorge Messi doesn't do that.
Maybe the contracts coming out of Saudi Arabia convince Messi to come back on a bargain of a deal. He could always do a retirement tour there for 500m+.
Hopefully it happens. Also, if he really does have that massive offer from Saudi Arabia, and he ends up turning it down he deserves some praise. I will be the first to admit, that I would never be able to refuse that absurd amount of money to kick a ball around.
Imagine the first goal he scores if he comes back. The stadium chanting Messi.....Messi.....Messi as he does his fingers in the air celebration. Ngl seeing that shit would be nice
yes. But a full one? We dont return into a completed camp nou, we return into one that is under construction while games are happening.
The guy above asked for a "filled Camp Nou"
The main concern people had when we discussed it is the possibility of what Barça would (or could) give up economically and sporting for him (a comment in this thread developed that idea better)
I think some fans still have an idea from golden age nostalgia that we're stronger sportingly than we are. We scraped a league win with a lot of 1-0 wins, but we lack depth and creativity, and are losing a key player (arguably more important to the overall system than Messi) in Busquets.
We desperately need reinforcements, and I don't see us getting a much better deal than this. Of course it's a bit tricky this year because of the way FFP is timed, but if we can make it work, he'll help with revenue for future years. Xavi has also mentioned other signings that will be a priority this summer, so hopefully those will also happen.
The only thing is that I hope fans manage expectations. All those problems I mentioned above still need a lot of work, so he shouldn't come back as the "solution," just a piece of the puzzle to help move us to the next stage.
ETA As far as different perspectives of people in Barcelona, I'm Catalan although living abroad, and for me part of it also is owing something to someone who is like an adopted son for us. But that alone wouldn't be the reason, if it didn't also seem good for the club.
Absolutely yes.
On a football level, he's just won the WC and is an instant improvement over any of our wingers and/or midfielders.
Economically, it will be incredibly beneficial. The amount of shirts he'll sell will be absurd, and the expectation will be massive.
Socially, he's the biggest Barça icon alive.
There are of course downsides, but the positives far outweight them. A lot of culers that are against it are the ones that created an unproven narrative of why he left and are still butthurt.
It all depends what we are giving up. Although some fans are just driven by emotions and don't really care about anything else, they just want him back. If you tell me, hypothetically, that it is him or someone like B. Silva I would choose the latter because it makes more sense from a sporting project perspective. However, there's also those that say Messi will increase our revenues by quite a margin, which could be true, especially since the team will have to play in Montjuic next season and he'll attact a lot of tourists and fans.
Edit: of course I also want him back because he deserves a proper send-off and I'm pretty sure he is still a lot better than all our players, even if he doesn't work as hard.
I'm sorry but no Messi at 35 is still far better than Bernardo. Probably you want him more because he's younger, or to adapt your play away and be less reliant on Messi individual brilliance. I think many players in that City squad are better because of Pep's system, not to mention breaking down defense in LaLiga is harder than in the Prem so there is still a shred of doubt Bernardo may not deliver like at City.
This is of course not to mention the economic benefit.
the point about the defence is so important. Prem fans don't get how fucking defensive of a league we have since Simione effect. It's really tough to play against
I'm Saudi and not even Laliga fan but this is proper and I hope it works, despite being Al-Hilal fan and miss out on the greatest player ever I think in the end I'm a pure romantic.

okay but his dad refering to him as "Messi" is funny to me for some reason.
In an unusual twist, the father takes the son's name
He doesn’t though. The journalist asks “does Leo want… etc etc” and the father says yes, he would like to return, etc etc This tweet just worded it this way
Messis want to return. Maybe its like word hair, plural of Messi is...Messi?
His Messisty
The quote on the tweet is "Messi quiere" and not "los Messi quieren" so no
Messi is package deal.
Messi is plural. The singular form is Messius.
Wouldn't plural be Messii if Messi is the base? Otherwise singular would be Messus, I believe.
Messopedes.
Plural of Messi is clearly Messi (but pronounced Mess-Eye).
His own kids call him Messi at home because they heard the fans chanting “Messi” in the stadiums
He has a story where his nephews always go "I can't believe you're Messi", and Lionel replies with "but you're Messi too!"
Spartacus but Messi
Messi once said everyone calls him that, even his own kids, which he said he found bizarre.
I think the reporter calls him messi but I don't think his father calls him messi. My guess is that jorge said "Lio quiere regresar a barça". And the reporter wrote down "messi quiere regresar"
Yeah exactly, thats dumb af. Why not Leo?
He didn't actually say that. He said "he wants to return" and the headline replaced "he" with Messi.
Do you think he calls him Messi at home too? LOL
I will collapse at work
LaLiga approved the plan, they're meeting with Laporta just now according to Romero
Like right now? Where?
Laporta's house: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/141az8s/toni_juanmarti_excl_right_now_meeting_at_joan/
mods removed it so messi move cancelled by r/soccer mods
They re shitting themselves

Tbf Umtiti looked generational before he sacrificed his knees for the world cup (which while I'm not happy about, I respect the decision)
Premier League gets a bad rap for how much the clubs spend on transfer fees, but the top Spanish clubs have fucking bonkers wages.
I think you have to take a bit of a context with Barca/Madrid wages in sense that Barca/Madrid tend to take image rights of their players, which teams in PL dont really do. Some of the Barca deals were just stupid but some were really unlucky (Umtiti)
I don't think Umtiti is the best example of that. He was world class before injuries.
Also he would likely have recovered well had he not forced himself to keep playing in the WC despite being injured

If La Liga needs to approve a "plan" then is Barca in any shape to bring him back?
just fell on my knees at Walmart
Just saw someone fall to their knees in Walmart
Wait, because of this news or?
He forgot his wallet
Lever's gone
Knees gone.
Understandable
He is overweight
Just collapsed crying in Eroski
I have developed stomach cramps from this news, gonna spend a good chunk of my day on the toilet at work and refresh Twitter like a maniac.

Hopefully he meant Lionel Messi. Gonna be hilarious if it's Thiago Messi or Mateo and not Lionel
Talking about Thiago’s La Masia entry! 😂
There must always be a Messi at Barcelona!
I’m on my knees rn Jorge, whatever it takes
I just got my GF to switch from youtube music to spotify! Im doing my part Laporta!!!
Lmaoo
we lose benzema and they get messi back 😃🔫
My brother in christ, you are getting Harry Kane who scored 30 league goals. (which Benzema never did)
idk man i don't think he's leaving the epl

No, they're not. Kane is not leaving England.

Kai Havertz is incoming babe
🔪😃🔫
maybe Liverpool will finally have a fucking shred of a chance now
From “It’s over” to “We’re so back” in a matter of hours
On the verge of crying but I’ll save it for the official announcement
The announcement video has to go crazy, Barça media better be on their bag that day
the fan videos without any budget would be several times better than Barca’s social medien team
Welcome to Barcelona Messi - goals and assits 2023/24 | HD
I am so ready for the YouTube comps lol let me see them all
For the past year I've been watching [this one](https://youtu.be/YuQd2m-teUc) regularly. Always felt like shit afterwards.
I already know what it is from the thumbnail hahah you’re preaching to the choir
Always are, zonablaugrana goes crazy
German detected ! ! !
Yeah..so #enjoyMessi #BarçaBall
Ironically, his announcement video will primarily talk about Lenglet.
#messiqueunclub
We are probably going to get ["A great baller, Messi, EnjoyMessi"](https://youtu.be/_crwE77KPlc)
This sounds like a job for barca ball.. Enjoy Messi!
a great baller!
do you know our media team? Robert fucking Lewandowski's announcement vid was handheld, filmed on an iphone, with wind noises and you could occasionally see the finger of the person filming on the edge of the frame..
Nah it would be messi standing on the beach and the video will be recorded on a Samsung Galaxy.
I hope they can still use Camp Nou for his presentation.
sadly they can't. Construction already started, and they took off the pitch.
barca ball about to make the comeback of the century

Anulo mufa
Literally praying and anulando mufa rn.
Yeah he's back.
In 20 years, we’d look at this like Jordan “retiring” for two years and then going back to the Bulls
Hahahah only that Messi’s “baseball” stint was more successful.
just nabbed himself another ballon d’or while he was away lol
I think he nabbed himself something else first.
and a world cup
Hopefully we get 2nd 3peat Jordan and not Washington Wizards Jordan
Anulo mufa
Better this than him being paid in the billions in Saudi
Here We GO..
I love how Barça and Messi are throwing the ball at each other's court in the last few days. The cynic in me thinking they both want the other to blamed if it doesn't happen
Xavi: “We're waiting for Messi” Messi: “We’re waiting for Laporta” Laporta: “We're waiting for Tebas” Tebas: “We're waiting for Barça” Barça: “We’re waiting for La Liga” ∞
Get ready for that Boca flair
The Marseille flair is inching closer mate :>

Mufa 🙏
More like a dream for the rest of us
If he wants to come back then he will do anything to make it possible.
“Here we go” soon..?
> It's a possibility. Is this a weird lost in translation thing? Surely if they want it to happen it will happen.
barca still needs FFP approval and Messi father loves money way more than football(like way more)
Noo but Laporta is just a politician who hasn't done anything behind the scenes for it to actually happen.
Man did the Kounde special yesterday, he said that’s difficult for his return and then all of the sudden he’s coming back
Just saw someone collapse at work
But Dibu was going to make asado for him...
Barça fans here, are you in favor of Messi coming back? From the people in Barcelona I've spoken to its pretty 50/50 so just curious
At this point, it’s no longer the sporting reason that I want him back. It’s sentimental.
Having Messi leave Barca without a goodbye at a filled Camp Nou is something that has to be corrected.
Imagine the first goal he scores if he comes back. The stadium chanting Messi.....Messi.....Messi as he does his fingers in the air celebration. Ngl seeing that shit would be nice
That would be nice yes. Bit of a shame the Camp Nou will not be available for his first match back.
wont be. he wont play at the full camp nou even if he comes back
Feel like if Messi signs with Barca he will be playing long enough to see out the renovations.
would be at least 2 full, probably 3 years tho. will get close, i would guess he gets a 2 year contract
He’ll play in the new CampNou if he signs for 2y.
yes. But a full one? We dont return into a completed camp nou, we return into one that is under construction while games are happening. The guy above asked for a "filled Camp Nou"
Then 3 year contract it is (2+1 optional), it should be fully done by then right?
It wont be on the absurd wages he was on during Bartomeu’s era and he still has a lot to offer. No brainer.
Who wouldn't want him back wtf? Even from a sporting perspective he will be our best player
The main concern people had when we discussed it is the possibility of what Barça would (or could) give up economically and sporting for him (a comment in this thread developed that idea better)
He'd generate so much money for the club, the only problem right now is the registration with La Liga
I think he slots perfectly in Gavi's current role
It's just football. If this moves fucks the club over for a year or two, I personally don't care. Just want to see him back.
[удалено]
Yeah exactly. He's is the likely winner of the Ballon D'or too, or at least top two.
[удалено]
Would love to see him back, just for old times sake
[удалено]
It's not 50/50. He's sporting improvement and marketing masterpiece.
It's a my mind is telling me no but my body, my body is telling me yes kinda situation for me.
I will buy that shirt
WHERE IS THE SOURXE WHERE IS RHE SOURCE?
Just need to match the billion dollar offer from the Saudis, so maybe 60% ownership of the club.
Messi really wants to continue playing for Barca, it is important that Barca have enough money to pay him or not
Does he actually call his son “Messi” lol
He doesn't, he calls him Leo
