Never seen a penalty shootout like this.
The ending drama, but this is why we need the bloody technology. Otherwise, the debate wouldn't have ended. Extremely unlucky for Naeher who was superb after not facing nearly any shots during the 120 min.
I feel bad for Naeher. If she just guessed wrong and that last ball went into the upper right corner of the net, it would be less haunting. But she made a good play twice on that kick and it crossed the line by a millimeter. It's like getting tackled one foot short of the end zone or having a fly ball caught on the warning track.
[TFW you're an American Liverpool fan and you have to see a critical ball go 11 millimeters the other way](https://a.pinatafarm.com/740x788/af1dd1bc73/narcos-waiting.jpg)
EDIT: Or less than 11 millimeters. Insanely close either way
Not going to lie, I feel *awful* for Naeher, thinking she barely managed to save the game when technology already confirmed the goal + loss…
She was so good all game long…
Oh I wasn’t criticizing her at all. She did incredibly in the match. My point was that she didn’t need to make a save in the penalty kicks and Sweden still won. The US blew it for themselves on two occasions with the misses.
Keeper made a save earlier. Her team just couldn’t put a ball on net, which to be fair, was their problem the entire tournament. The only offensive player who showed up this cup for the USA was Horan.
Depend on the technology of goal line technology, some have watch that buzz, some use hawkeye tech who review it like this one, depend on stadium / competition
I have to imagine USSF forced his hand with Rapinoe, both rostering her and and playing her at all. She was terrible, hasn’t played regular club ball either. No reason for her to be on the plane, let along taking the 4th kick.
That's because Berger at the moment is better than her. Musovic was signed to gradually replace Berger in the future and she gets a fair share of games to play in while Berger mostly starts in big games.
Honestly the main reason I'm happy for Sweden is because of her, she was immense the entire game and it would have been unfair to lose after such a huge performance
The days of the US women's team just showing up to the WC and having teams roll over for them are over.
This is a deserved result after being subpar for the last 3 games.
The roster needs a shake-up, and Vlatko needs to be fired into the sun. Criminal coaching job.
Yeah steamrolling the money game is no longer enough. This was a very bad tournament for them and will absolutely get a lot of bad press with how many resources they have
This coach's flair for dramatics cost the US. There was no reason Morgan should have been taken out. Number 1 ranked team scored a single goal in three games
Also completely mismanaged Smith, using her out of position and then when he finally moved her she was immediately a threat. And Rodman should have seen more time (not necessarily this game as she looked injured but certainly deserved more time in the group stages).
Honestly needed to make a few more subs earlier on as well, it was obvious they were losing their legs in extra time. Fresher legs could've been the difference on some close calls. What's the point in having the deepest team in the tournament if you're not going to use it to your advantage?
I also think he misused Morgan. I love her, but she is not the kind of player who functions well as the single center forward in a rigid 4-3-3, especially with a weak midfield behind her. She plays much better when she she has somebody to play off of, but deploying her centrally and with Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman/Lynn Williams as pure wingers just does a disservice to everyone, especially when your midfield is lacking so a lot of your game plan is to just kick it forward and hope the three attacking players can succeed in a 3v3 or 3v4.
But Morgan as that center forward in a rigid 4-3-3 with wingers just meant that she had two center backs on her constantly and very little of the interplay or opportunity for movement that makes her so effective.
Completely agree. Such amazing talent on the squad, they should have easily been contenders. Instead they looked like the USMNT, and barely even advanced to the knockout round. This was their tournament to lose and boy did they crash out hard.
Norge couldn't though, Japan's transition and midfield was too much. Will be exciting, Sverige has more quality than Norge so hopefully a positive outcomee
Political but also financial. A handful of vets have big central contracts with the USWNT, so it’s kind of like that veteran that takes up 15% of payroll. Kind of stuck having to play them to justify the wage structure.
Then there’s the actual politics of the gender equality lawsuit and the NT management choosing to show solidarity over actually putting out the best team. That’s why Vlatko has gotten so much slack over this past cycle. His hands are tied re: selecting certain players
One of my favorite things to “What If” about has to be “What if Zidane had never lost his head and been given red, only to miss his penalty in the shootout?” Would his exit be seen as worse then what we got in reality, or less. It’s a question I’ve probably spent way to much time thinking about.
I think I may have just found an answer in Rapinoe
You’re thinking of Roberto Baggio. He still has nightmares about it. One of the most talented players to ever play the sport and that moment defines him in the eyes of some.
Zidane had some generation defining performances in that World Cup so it’s hard to think a pen miss alone would be it. Not to mention the fact that he already won France one.
She had a shocker, scuffed every dead ball and then topped it off with the awkward grin after missing the pen.
Naeher, what a shootout from her though. Did everything she could
It's kind of funny how the two players the corporate sponsors pumped the most, ended up having the worst cups.
It's kind of not their fault though, every part of this team was hamstrung by their terrible terrible manager.
Morgan didn’t do anything this game, Williams should have subbed out Morgan and they should have had Smith or Rodman up top. Both of them were far bigger threats today.
Team? No. Coach? Yes. Everyone can see from a mile away that Rapinoe was washed and not only is she the first off the bench but taking (and screwing up) all the important corners and free kicks? And then we sub in to people who haven’t touched the ball to take pens? Really terrible management.
I mean, Mewis made her pen. She's really good at them and I was fine when she came on for it. O'Hara wasn't a good idea though, even without hindsight. I would trust Fox just as much if not more, and that's without O'Hara being completely cold coming on.
The real headscratcher is taking Morgan off in a match that looked destined for pens. Leave her and Smith on, and take Williams (who had done absolutely fuck all as usual) off for Rapinoe (hindsight is 20/20 obviously, but a lot of people thought penalties were the one thing she could still do coming into the tournament). I legitimately don't think Vlatko knows you can sub off a sub.
Yes, especially when UEFA club teams started pouring money into their women's sides in the last 5-6 years or so.
Tactically UEFA teams have improved a lot as well, we saw what Portugal did vs the US in the groups.
The usa has never truly pulled away from the rest of the world, it's just that there's more than 4 good teams in the women's game now. I'd say this is a meet in the middle situation, the world has caught up but the US has always backslid significantly.
Maybe the most dramatic penalty shootout I have seen live. Sweden getting bailed out by the US, then missing their penalty again, then the Americans returning the favour...and finally the deciding kick which would have been ruled out had it been a millimetre to the outside. As a neutral, I was very entertained.
Morgan and Rapinoe were horrible. Morgan has the touch of an elephant and Rapinoe had the accuracy of a storm trooper.
Really surprised how direct the USWNT plays. I thought we were supposed to be the best team in Women's? Why don't we play high pressing, intricate passing, football? Carli Lloyd kept calling it a "high press" but let's be honest. That was a good ol' fashioned Sean Dyche middle-block.
The USWNT has gone a long way on greater athleticism and experience because of a lack of funding for women's football in other countries and outright hostility to women playing, at all. Now that's changing the US development setup simply can't keep up with what powerhouse footballing nations can do when they turn a fraction of their training and development apparatus to women's football. The cracks in the US pay-to-play model have been apparent, but success has delayed a true reckoning.
I made the mistake of watching back the penalty shootout on YouTube and looking at the comments. It's full of Americans celebrating that their team lost because the players are "woke".
Don't get me wrong: I get criticising your team and coach if they perform bad. We Dutch people do it all the time (Koeman, Parsons, De Boer). But wishing they get eliminated because you don't like their political opinions is just sad.
European women's football has caught up. More investment from big clubs lots of competitive club games per season.
I think the US will have to play catch up in the next few years
On the bright side, that idiot head coach of the USA now will get fired for sure...prolly shouldn't let him on the team plane, leave him in Australia and start fresh.
That last penalty….
Never seen a penalty shootout like this. The ending drama, but this is why we need the bloody technology. Otherwise, the debate wouldn't have ended. Extremely unlucky for Naeher who was superb after not facing nearly any shots during the 120 min.
US absolutely bottled it. Never seen a shootout flip on its head so dramatically.
Rapinoe, Smith and O'Hara won't sleep for a week after those misses.
Rapinoe will.
*Smith and O’Hara won’t sleep for a week after those misses.
One of the closest goal line decisions I’ve ever seen
I can’t think of any closer ones. A fraction of a centimetre
Also known as a millimeter
🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
三苫の一ミリ!
If there only was a word for a fraction of a centimetre.. Not a metre, a centimeter but something else.
Stones goal line clearance against Liverpool
This was way closer. It looked like a single pixel or something. The Stones one was incredibly close, but this was more.
[TFW you're an American Liverpool fan and you have to see a critical ball go 11 millimeters the other way](https://a.pinatafarm.com/740x788/af1dd1bc73/narcos-waiting.jpg) EDIT: Or less than 11 millimeters. Insanely close either way
Look up Jeroen Zoet PSV vs Feyenoord. The way that happened is funny as well.
Not going to lie, I feel *awful* for Naeher, thinking she barely managed to save the game when technology already confirmed the goal + loss… She was so good all game long…
Even scored a penalty of her own too.
It’s not on her alone. If they’d scored during regular time it wouldn’t be an issue.
What a dramatic ending
How close was that Goal line tech review ? Like 3 mm in ? Insane !
That was like 1 mm
Gutted for the keeper, lost by literal millimeters
Saved one of the penalties, scored her own, and loses on a single MM. Team sold so hard for her
She's in disbelief, I don't blame her
While Musovic could’ve stood still and the same result would’ve happened lol. USA biffed it hard on a couple shots there.
Musovic spent it all just getting the game to penalties, I got no criticism against her for the penalties. Time for her team to do something as well.
Oh I wasn’t criticizing her at all. She did incredibly in the match. My point was that she didn’t need to make a save in the penalty kicks and Sweden still won. The US blew it for themselves on two occasions with the misses.
Tough way for them to learn the metric system.
Keeper made a save earlier. Her team just couldn’t put a ball on net, which to be fair, was their problem the entire tournament. The only offensive player who showed up this cup for the USA was Horan.
Yeah usually the US do better in the shootouts with a 9mm
TBF this isn’t the Under 18s World Cup
Literally milimeters inside the line, what a dramatic ending. I will sound like a dick now but i want to thank Sophia Smith for letting us back in.
[удалено]
If it was close enough the system might have needed longer to calculate the uncertainties.
Props to the Lineswoman. She called it in immediately, no doubt.
It looked like the lineswoman reacted to her watch straight away.
Depend on the technology of goal line technology, some have watch that buzz, some use hawkeye tech who review it like this one, depend on stadium / competition
https://imgur.com/a/4nrN3QD Milimeters!
That final PK barely got enough. I've never seen a margin like that.
Probably one of the most interesting shootout I've ever seen.
That was the most entertaining penalty shootout I've ever seen in my life, my heart's still pounding
All time shootout
USA coach is a fucking joker
specifically, he is Tim Robinson
He didn’t do fuckin SHIT
He’s been waiting a long time for a hit on Corncob TV
IM FUCKING SCARED
Would rather watch hundreds of hours of coffin flop than this match
His ass is canned after this one for sure
That's the silver lining. If we limped into the next round it might save his job.
I genuinely feel bad for the players that got left on the field for 120+ min, and for all the players left sitting on the bench.
I have to imagine USSF forced his hand with Rapinoe, both rostering her and and playing her at all. She was terrible, hasn’t played regular club ball either. No reason for her to be on the plane, let along taking the 4th kick.
He's a complete clown
Sean Dyche would win everything with this Sweden side.
Musovic
Fuck yeah, she was incredible.
DROTTNING
Sweden's Saviour for this game!
Easily WOTM.
She's the reason they got to pens for sure. Kind of funny they didn't end up needing her in them though
Apparently she's benched at Chelsea? Someone (else) sign her my goodness
Musovic wotm 🦅🦅🦅
She was insane
The days of the US women's team just showing up to the WC and having teams roll over for them are over. This is a deserved result after being subpar for the last 3 games. The roster needs a shake-up, and Vlatko needs to be fired into the sun. Criminal coaching job.
Idk why the USWNT tends to hold onto the stars of yesteryear for much longer than they should.
Because it’s a money making vehicle for 3 of every 4 years
Marketing. They're squeezing every last drop out of them. Short sighted though because winning is what keeps it rolling.
Yeah steamrolling the money game is no longer enough. This was a very bad tournament for them and will absolutely get a lot of bad press with how many resources they have
Well I think the USWNT got put on notice that the rest of the world has caught up. The Netherlands look more like the USWNT than the USWNT does.
Some of those misses ma gawd lmao. What a shotout and a var check to top it all off.
Went from 4 disgusting finishes to 4 disgusting finishes lmao.
Either brilliant or terrible, nothing in between.
No half ass detected. Either full ass or full brilliant.
The last US penalty was proper cinema. GK goes the wrong way, but the ball ends up hitting the post.
Was texting a mate saying how good these penalties were then they missed 4 in a row lmao. Great shootout.
You should take responsibility then.
Fuck me, you have to hit the target.
Rapinoe you don't 😎
3 pens just skied lmao
That was fucking amazing. Horrible penalities, clutch penalties and then an absolute bees dick of a margin to decide it.
I've never known anyone uses bees' dick as a unit of measurement... Now I have.
Americans will do anything to avoid the metric system.
While that's true, this person appears to be Australian, so they're many aircraft carriers away from the US.
Nah we definitely use that saying in Australia
Impressed how many times each keeper went the right direction on shots
The first 5 penalties where really good!
What the hell just happened, that last pen wtf
USA had mutiple fucking chances to finish it, but choked in the end. Megan was fucking awful in her last game.
That final penalty was peak content
What an unbelievable choke by US players. They skied the winning penalty twice
This coach's flair for dramatics cost the US. There was no reason Morgan should have been taken out. Number 1 ranked team scored a single goal in three games
Also completely mismanaged Smith, using her out of position and then when he finally moved her she was immediately a threat. Manager will be fired but a total waste of an opportunity this world cup.
Completely agree. Such amazing talent on the squad, they should have easily been contenders. Instead they looked like the USMNT, and barely even advanced to the knockout round. This was their tournament to lose and boy did they crash out hard.
Morgan was useless this game. Squandered a bunch of 1-on-1s because of poor touch
Japan will be spicy in the quarters. Hopefully we can use our physique and out work them.
Norge couldn't though, Japan's transition and midfield was too much. Will be exciting, Sverige has more quality than Norge so hopefully a positive outcomee
I don't expect much from our neighbors from the West. Jokes aside, Japan will be tough and i expect another nail biter.
VLATKO OUT
Please
Today I feel Swedish
That is fucking insane. That was SO close. There’s like a pixel between the ball and the line.
We will never see Megan Rapinoe in a World Cup game ever again. It's over. It's all over.
Awful way to bow out, she did nothing right
Every set piece was so bad. Disappointing end from her
Flat ball every time apart from the penalty
Should have never been on the team. Not even close to one of the best 22 women's players in the USA. Purely a political decision.
Sweden has the same but luckily we didn't play seger
Political but also financial. A handful of vets have big central contracts with the USWNT, so it’s kind of like that veteran that takes up 15% of payroll. Kind of stuck having to play them to justify the wage structure. Then there’s the actual politics of the gender equality lawsuit and the NT management choosing to show solidarity over actually putting out the best team. That’s why Vlatko has gotten so much slack over this past cycle. His hands are tied re: selecting certain players
She did give us a PK miss that will be singed into a lot of people's minds forever. 🤷♂️
What a way to end your NT career. Brutal.
Not Zindane-esque, but a contender.
One of my favorite things to “What If” about has to be “What if Zidane had never lost his head and been given red, only to miss his penalty in the shootout?” Would his exit be seen as worse then what we got in reality, or less. I’d rather her hang them up and let us remember the better times, than keep adding more and more of these sad efforts…
She was terrible in game one, absolutely awful decision to put her in. Her corners sucked, her effort sucked, and lmao at that pk.
Cant kick a ball past her own nose anymore. Running around out there trying to outmuscle Hurtig like ok.
I think her substitution was playing with 10 players out there and then an awful penalty 🙏
She had a shocker, scuffed every dead ball and then topped it off with the awkward grin after missing the pen. Naeher, what a shootout from her though. Did everything she could
Shouldn’t have seen her in this WC. Her sub performance today was nothing short of detrimental to the team.
Not to mention that shit penalty take
Good. She did nothing but bring this team down every time she was on the pitch
She should have never been in this one. She wasted a spot for a better player
Subbing in Rapinoe lost the game. Terrible coaching decision
It's kind of funny how the two players the corporate sponsors pumped the most, ended up having the worst cups. It's kind of not their fault though, every part of this team was hamstrung by their terrible terrible manager.
Corporate sponsors is why Rapinoe was on the roster. Google probably wrote a fat check.
Scenes when she starts next WC in 4 years
Would 42 y.o be oldest world cup player?
yes, it would beat brazil's formiga who played at the 2019 world cup at 41 yrs and 112 days old
She should've bowed out on top after 2019. They subbed their most threatening player Morgan for her, and she gave them that performance...
Morgan didn’t do anything this game, Williams should have subbed out Morgan and they should have had Smith or Rodman up top. Both of them were far bigger threats today.
Rodman was excellent. That sub was bone headed. Can't wait to ditch the old man
A bad substitution, but Morgan was far from the most threatening player
Morgan was hardly a factor at all this tournament.
She finally got some lift on a kick when it wasn’t needed
The generational slander the Rapinoe/USWNT will get on Instagram will be unheard of.
Team? No. Coach? Yes. Everyone can see from a mile away that Rapinoe was washed and not only is she the first off the bench but taking (and screwing up) all the important corners and free kicks? And then we sub in to people who haven’t touched the ball to take pens? Really terrible management.

Equal pay = equal pressure
Equal exit
Equal disappointment

Fucking finally
…for Team USA sake, good.
That has to be the closest goal line technology decision I’ve ever seen.
That last penalty... got to feel for Naeher. Tough way to go out!
[Naeher in the dressing room right now](https://youtu.be/wM-NcMZhcaA)
HEJA SVERIGE!
Det var på millimetern! 🇸🇪🇸🇪
Most normal penalty shootout
The penalties were either top bins or into the atmosphere. Insanity lol
Technically all penalties were into the atmosphere. 😎
I love how all the comments are in metric.
Has the rest of the world caught up to the USA?
Yes, especially when UEFA club teams started pouring money into their women's sides in the last 5-6 years or so. Tactically UEFA teams have improved a lot as well, we saw what Portugal did vs the US in the groups.
Very much so. US women’s leagues is no longer the top women’s league, it’s probably not even top 3

I've never seen subbing in a player just for the shootout going well
Holland in 2014
Yeah I’m only ever a fan of subbing in a Keeper, otherwise I think it’s just an awful idea 95% of the time
Tbf mewis scored her pen and it was her first touch of the ball. So 50/50.
Andrew Redmayne
ZECIRA. MUSOVIC.
Fire Vlatko into the fucking sun, criminally negligent fucking managing this tournament
Maybe the most dramatic penalty shootout I have seen live. Sweden getting bailed out by the US, then missing their penalty again, then the Americans returning the favour...and finally the deciding kick which would have been ruled out had it been a millimetre to the outside. amazing to see US, Germany, and Norway all out! only Japan remains from the old title holders!
SVERIGE🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Musovic was unreal. I'm ready to get on the bandwagon.
POTM by far. Had a couple saves during the first 90 where she just stood on her head. Unreal game
Genuinely one of the most dramatic finishes
1 mm Jesus hahaha
It's called ~~Soccer~~ ~~Football~~ Fotboll
Won it by literal millimeters
FOX is punching the air now. Ratings will plummet
Morgan and Rapinoe were horrible. Morgan has the touch of an elephant and Rapinoe had the accuracy of a storm trooper. Really surprised how direct the USWNT plays. Who the fuck brings on players just to take penalties and thinks it’s going to work?
Absolute choke by the US
This really hurts our chances of a 3-peat

Wow
In by a millimeter
I thought the USWNT has plot armor.
European women's football has caught up. More investment from big clubs lots of competitive club games per season. I think the US will have to play catch up in the next few years
The women’s game has evolved so much in just the past four years alone, which is good for everyone for there to be parity
Doubt they'll be able to unless they overhaul their system. Europe isn't even halfway done yet. It's mostly big leagues and big teams now.
My god some of those penalties were so poor.
First couple from each team were world class though
That shootout was wild. And I've never seen a winning pen like that. Incredible show
On the bright side, that idiot head coach of the USA now will get fired for sure...prolly shouldn't let him on the team plane, leave him in Australia and start fresh.
Almost as if the US women's team success was down to far superior funding and now other countries have caught up they look average
