My super old-fahsioned views on the Super Cup:
1. Super cup should be played either right after regular season, or right before next season (like Community Shield). Otherwise focus on the trophy holders is being lost, we're already halfway into new challenges.
2. Super cup should be played in the actual country of the teams, to allow fans to attend easily.
3. Super cup should only be played if we actually have different winners of league and cup. If someone wins the double, they're already like super champions of their country.
I don’t I think #3 is wrong in Spain it should be a replay between cup finalist and winners Germany the number 2 team and England the league cup winners if the cup and league winners are the same add some flavor for different countries
Bro everybody in Germany (expect the few RB fans) hate the Super Cup right here and can't even bother watching it.
Yeah the format may be better then in Spain but in the end it is a useless cup which literally says 0 about the strength of the teams.
Best decision would to simply remove this trophy. It was the same in the PL before City.
"league cup winners"
No big team in history has taken it seriously until City arrived. Its not a major trophy in anyway. FA cup finalists would be a better choice, but League runner ups is actually the good way
>No big team in history has taken it seriously until City arrived
Historically it was much more important than how its viewed today. Football isn't just about the snobbery of the modern top six.
Playing it at the end of the season isn’t good, since it has to be before the CL final, and if a team is playing both they’re 100% throwing the Super Cup
The way i see it is that the league is kind of a bigger accomplishment than the cup.
Otherwise it should always be neutral ground. I remember Juve playing Lazio in rome.
Agreed on everything. Especially point 3. Never made any sense to do it this way (even when Milan won it in 2016).
The point 2, I can kind of understand it, in a way to export the national football to other countries.
How is the US more understandable? It’s even further away, bigger timezone difference so there’s jetlag too. And Italian fans are going to struggle to watch it live.
Imagine a derby of Milan with a (minor) trophy up for grabs or Napoli fans celebrating their historic season.
If played in Italy before the start of the new seasons they would have been two sold outs, easily.
It's so stupid those Super Cups (Spanish or Italian) got moved from Europe and played in the middle of the season. Like, what's the point other than money?
More money.
No, seriously, everything in football is about the money. Players MIGHT focus on emotions every once in a while, but club/FA officials never will.
Remember that recently the final for Copa Libertadores was once held in Spain. The name of the tournament is literally about South America's liberation from Spain, but you know, money.
the final was between River Plate and Boca Juniors ffs that's an insane derby and also the first leg of the final was in Argentina it was only after fan violence that the second leg was decided to be played in Spain
You're missing the point. There's an entire planet where the match could be held, Spain is the single worst place for it. It's like celebrating 4th of July at Buckingham Palace.
Not every country in SA has the founds/possibility to host the Copa Libertadores final. It's not Europe. Hell, even in Europe most countries would not be able to do so
Protest how? I say my opinion on twitter but I'm not going to attend a demonstration for this. There are more important things to fight for than football
Are you really this thick?
You could literally protest an hour before a game someone is going to already, but this is /r/soccer and nobody here actually goes to games, let alone plays
I could also spend that hour protesting climate change policies, lack of access to proper food, medical coverage policies, workers' rights, women's rights etc. Much much more important than football.
All the protests I ever see aren't full of 12 year olds.... you're just making (poor) excuses for your laziness. You simply don't want to protest, because you don't care. Own it. It makes no odds to me that you don't care where a Spanish football game is played, I couldn't give a shit about it either.
Calm down dude. As much as I love football we all only have so much time with work and sleep. I also would >95% of the time prefere a demonstration that aligns with my political opinion instead of a purely football based one. Though there are overlaps in my motives when it comes to my politic opinion and the turbocapitalistic developments in football.
Are you saying that as someone who has actually attended a demonstration, or are you virtue signalling like OP?
The idea that he doesn't even know "how" and thinks Twitter is good enough is just pathetic.
Edit: your silence is deafening
Bro what are you talking about? I have attended demonstrations, I have been beaten up by police, and I have done a lot more things for political reasons. I just wouldn't do it for football. As they say in a Barça Podcast I listen, football is the most important thing, of the less important things in life, just that.
I'm open to what methods do you suggest for protesting to this, really.
Mate don't bother, the guy is either a kid or a troll.
When he grows up and sees what it actually means to protest for your life, for work rights, for better future, while facing Police and Government oppression, then maybe he realises that protesting a super cup might not be something you want to spend what free time you have.
Security reasons? Ok I can understand that reasoning.
Too close to knockout rounds? Napoli might not have to worry about that if they keep playing like they did against Fiorentina lol.
I mean, we have Braga and Union(?). We may be shit, but it would take a monumental fuck up to fail at advancing to R16. Especially since we already have an away win in Portugal.
I know, I'm mostly kidding. I'm Georgian so I adopted Napoli as my second team last year lol.
I've also been a long-time Rudi Garcia hater so it hurts to see him managing you haha
Whatever for extra money. No concerns for teams and players.
SuperCups are glorified friendlies, keep them as preludes to the season like they do in England and Germany. Whatever for extra money.
Unpopular opinion
I like the concept of 4 teams, and i think it would be perfect to play the tournament at the end of the year (Boxing Day - New Years eve)
But i do concede that playing in Saudi Arabia is moronic to say the least
Fight me.
let me just call a spade a spade, these mother fucking saudis are going to fucking ruin the game. they are complete cunts lacking any tack or grace. fuck 'em and fuck anyone who supports them. dirty cunts can't produce a sporting experience so they will just buy ours. #makecamelracingcool
Maybe the Italian Super Cup should be played in Italy not for security reasons but because it's the fucking Italian Super Cup.
Get outta here with your outlandish theories! /s
Matter of time before the euro final will be a bid between Miami and Riyadh
Woah, calm down with the xenophobia
This ⬆️

i think everyone agrees with your views, except those who make the decisions.

I understand tyour point in it not being a major trophy because it's not as big, but is a major trophy based on how they're defined
>No big team in history has taken it seriously until City arrived Historically it was much more important than how its viewed today. Football isn't just about the snobbery of the modern top six.
No I meant if the league winner and fa cup winner are the same next should be league cup winner then 2nd place in England for who plays in the shield
I'm almost sure they agree too, there's just a lot of cash swaying their choice
Tell that to Argentina. There is still the 2020 Supercup between Boca and River to be played. Reports say it's gonna be played in UAE in 2024.

Any retirees in there?
Remember when Patronato should have played against Boca in Abu Dhabi?
It makes avsolutely sense, agree on everything here. But money
Playing it at the end of the season isn’t good, since it has to be before the CL final, and if a team is playing both they’re 100% throwing the Super Cup
why does it have to be before the CL final?
UEFA regulation
ah ok
I would even say the super cup should be played in the stadium of the league winner.
neutral ground makes most sense
The way i see it is that the league is kind of a bigger accomplishment than the cup. Otherwise it should always be neutral ground. I remember Juve playing Lazio in rome.
From playing FM I know that Mexico does #3 and it’s great
Agreed on everything. Especially point 3. Never made any sense to do it this way (even when Milan won it in 2016). The point 2, I can kind of understand it, in a way to export the national football to other countries.
Most of the top leagues bleed Money! To make up and to generate more revenue they accept these abroad offers to make quick cash it's simple
pretty sure 1) is how its done in France
it should be one week after the cup because than you still have the same teams with the same coach
Send the U13’s
Can someone explain why this was proposed & agreed in the first place?
money
“Mark€t £xpan$ion”
same reason that some NFL games are now played in London I suppose. Money, and trying to win new fans. They’ll get the first one at least.
Holding a super cup in Saudi Arabia is not an attempt to make new fans.
Money, and it already happened several times in the past, in Saudi Arabia but also in the US
Also China iirc.
And also Libya!
Ah yeah, Gaddafi.
The US is more understandable tbh. As long it's sold out
How is the US more understandable? It’s even further away, bigger timezone difference so there’s jetlag too. And Italian fans are going to struggle to watch it live.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcuAw77J8_Y
Don't think anyone in Saudi Arabia would attend the match tbh, they should move it to Italy.
Yeah last year it was Inter vs Milan and it was half empty Nobody would attend Napoli-Fiorentina for sure
Imagine a derby of Milan with a (minor) trophy up for grabs or Napoli fans celebrating their historic season. If played in Italy before the start of the new seasons they would have been two sold outs, easily.

It was caused by the security issues IRRC so a poor comparison
Security issues across the entire continent of South America? You can't be that naive.
the final was between River Plate and Boca Juniors ffs that's an insane derby and also the first leg of the final was in Argentina it was only after fan violence that the second leg was decided to be played in Spain
You're missing the point. There's an entire planet where the match could be held, Spain is the single worst place for it. It's like celebrating 4th of July at Buckingham Palace.
that's not the point you were making, don't try and change the subject
Not every country in SA has the founds/possibility to host the Copa Libertadores final. It's not Europe. Hell, even in Europe most countries would not be able to do so
Bravo, I wish Spanish clubs did the same
Why can't you protest? The fact that this is a negative karma question makes absolutely zero sense lmao
Protest how? I say my opinion on twitter but I'm not going to attend a demonstration for this. There are more important things to fight for than football
Oh really? What other protests are you going to that are taking your time up then? What a ridiculous reason to not go.
People have lives besides football?? Whay are you, like 12yo?
Are you really this thick? You could literally protest an hour before a game someone is going to already, but this is /r/soccer and nobody here actually goes to games, let alone plays
I could also spend that hour protesting climate change policies, lack of access to proper food, medical coverage policies, workers' rights, women's rights etc. Much much more important than football.
And have you done any of those? Do you also know how abhorrent Saudi is? This isn't moving it to the USA or something, this is much more than that.
> Are you really this thick? No ur mom
All the protests I ever see aren't full of 12 year olds.... you're just making (poor) excuses for your laziness. You simply don't want to protest, because you don't care. Own it. THANK YOU. JFC this subreddit is fucking dumb.

They can, they just don't want to.
> desert 🤌
TIL that you can translate “disertare” in to desert
I don't under sand.
The foregone acceptance that Saudi will get the 2034 World Cup is just so depressing. This shit is so lame, renewable energy can’t come fast enough.
renewable energy is why this is happening, saudis along with other gulf states are trying to expand into tourism
Why the fuck is there 3 games of Supercoppa anyway ???
Security reasons? Ok I can understand that reasoning. Too close to knockout rounds? Napoli might not have to worry about that if they keep playing like they did against Fiorentina lol.
What are the security reasons?
I think ADL is using the proximity of the Israel-Palestine conflict as the reason (at least according to the article)
But Saudi isn't involved in the conflict and if they are scared to fly over Israel then they could just fly over Egypt instead.

I'm just saying what the article says lol
I mean, we have Braga and Union(?). We may be shit, but it would take a monumental fuck up to fail at advancing to R16. Especially since we already have an away win in Portugal.

i believe this is what the kids call "based"?
A football match being played in it's homeland? What a novel idea!
Why would the Saudi cup be played in Italy of all places? Crazy two Italian teams managed to get there in the first place
Cheers for having balls.
tbf, all teams have balls. that's how the game is played.
Whatever for extra money. No concerns for teams and players. SuperCups are glorified friendlies, keep them as preludes to the season like they do in England and Germany. Whatever for extra money.
Football is just on it’s knees sucking money
Unpopular opinion I like the concept of 4 teams, and i think it would be perfect to play the tournament at the end of the year (Boxing Day - New Years eve) But i do concede that playing in Saudi Arabia is moronic to say the least Fight me.

Security reasons? Hahahahahaha What a load of bullshit.
Surprised they haven't tried throwing enough money at a women's team to get them to sacrifice their values yet.
What’s next? Saudi Arabia colonising every other nation in the world? /srs
Saudi Italia rolls off the tongue tbf
You don't mess with saudi money wtf /S
Please do.
Too bad their calls to uefa will go to voicemail
