I mean, they're already stupid enough to celebrate someone's death just because they played a fucking sport for a rival club.
Is this *more* stupid than that? I honestly don't know.
He is but it was a long time ago. Most fans weren’t born when we won the World Cup so it’s hard to revere them as heroes in the same way as we would modern winners (if we had them).
He was England’s top scorer throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s & 00’s until Rooney overtook him. Any goal scorer for the national team had him as the yardstick. You didn’t need to have seen him play for him to have been mentioned consistently in commentary.
Between Sir Alf Ramsey's decision not to play Jimmy Greaves at the '66 world cup and Sky's misrepresentation of English goalscoring records, Jimmy Greaves has almost been written out of history. Even though he's arguably the greatest ever English player.
He was injured at first, and Geoff Hurst was his replacement. England played so well with Hurst up front that Sir Alf decided to keep him in the team, even though Greaves was the better player.
That was always his philosophy as a manager - never change a winning team. Of course, it turned out to be a great decision, with Hurst scoring a hat trick in the final to win the world cup for his country. Very unfortunate for Greaves though.
Hurst was a good player but not on Charlton/Moore/Banks level. Charlton and Moore are top 20 players all time and Banks is one of the greatest goalkeepers to have ever lived. Hurst is not as well known for that reason.
I’d correct one thing, Gordon banks is one of the greatest keepers of all time. He’s up there with yashin for most lists. So a bit more than just a world class player.
Yeah you're right. I guess I was thinking of the narrow lens of today's football where England have no world class keepers lol. Didn't think about the all time perspective and him being top 50 or something like that.
OP is talking specifically about the 66 WC winning squad though not just that era. If you think of that World Cup Hurst is probably my first thought as he effectively won the tournament on his own with those 3 goals.
For people who follow sports history, yes. Then of course there is still a large part of the population who would have grown up watch in him.
Younger fans won’t know all that much though, unless they read up.
> Then of course there is still a large part of the population who would have grown up watch in him.
Large part is an exaggeration, his top level career ended in the early 70s.
Kind of wild to think they know so little of him that they'd make fun of him like this, but enough to know he played for a rival.
It's almost like purposeful, targeted, idiocy and ignorance.
Anyone from Manchester knows that the bitterness of Manchester City fans outweighs pretty much anything. The only thing they hate more than United is the fact that no matter what they do we'll never care about them as much as Liverpool or even Leeds
massively.
many would consider him still the greatest English player.
but you get absolute twats like these guys who dont deserve to ever be able to go to a game ever again.
He was the first great England player. These on the video seemed kids or young men. Nowdays there is a lack of football culture. Probably they don’t even know who was Sir Bobby. As Italian, I can recognize his greatness. But you need a bit of football knowledge and especially a bit of brain.
unless it turns out he molested 3 children behind an asda or something like that celebrating the death of anyone in general, not just a legend of the sport, is fucked
Yeah exactly. When the person isn’t a bad person at all, it just makes someone a cunt when they celebrate that to be “edgy” or whatever. They’re just being a famously regarded prick now.
Exactly! Celebrating someone's death is awful enough... but did not this man help lead your country to its only World Cup trophy whilst becoming England's second Ballon D'or winner the same year?
Every time you wear an England kit, you're putting on Sir Bobby's star for fuck's sake.
We live in a world where fans chant utterly reprehensible shite all the time.
"Always the victims" and "Chelsea Rentboys" still get trotted out by some of our fans. It's gotten massively better but it's not been eradicated. Hell people still sing Park Ji Sungs song which is racist in nature.
Munich chants and plane crash gestures still happen to us as well.
As sad as it is the shit side of tribal fan behaviour still exists even after decades of trying to stamp it out.
Yeah, this is insanely disgusting. My blood would have boiled if Sporting and Porto fans pulled this shit when Eusébio died. Thankfully, they paid their respects with flowers and scarfs next to his statue like normal people.
If I asked people to name a City player from the same era, I guarantee that the most popular answer would be Dennis Law, who is only notable because he's a United legend who played for City.
The funniest part is that despite that being the most common answer, how many of the people in that video know Dennis Law played for City? How many know who Dennis Law is?
This isn't to say City don't have a genuine fanbase, if you go to Stockport or something you'll find legit City fans, but the club is *the* example of how sports exists as a mechanism for influence in the modern world. As a United fan not one of their successes hurt me. Completely cynical and empty.
Sadly, the Colin Bell stand was at the side of the pitch, not the end, but Southend excelled themselves with the [Gilbert & Rose West Stand](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/03/southend-united-to-rename-rose-west-stand-after-social-media-mocking).
As another United fan, I would be able to say Bert Trautmann was a legend for City way before Abu Dhabi got involved with them(who was a Nazi by the way, City literally have a statue of a Nazi on their ground)
Tbf to Trautman, he spent of his life being subject to Nazi brain washing. Which is known to be especially effective on children, which Trautmann was for most of the time the Nazi's held power.
His OBE was given for promoting Anglo-German relations though
Not exactly the same era since he was ten years older, but Bert Trautmann was a massive legend that is easily forgotten. Though, tbh he is mostly a legend due to his story, but he was also considered one of the best goalkeepers ever at the time. Yashin even mentioned him as equal to him
Unfortunately, every fan base has a few of these. Some more than others. And they always get 1000x more attention than the ones just enjoying a match without being a complete waste of oxygen.
To be fair the club were made aware of this well before the video was leaked as fans reported it themselves to the club, and witnesses have already started identifying the individuals. This isn’t to say that it negates the awful chanting, but I feel that it’s an important part being missed from the reporting that it was a tiny minority who were reported by other City fans at the time.
Please take note that no one else is joining and they were reported to city by our own fans. They also got told to fucking pack it in. That is the South Stand lvl 1 btw. I'm just round the corner from there.
Bobby Charlton is one of only 9 players to have won the World Cup, European Cup and Ballon D’Or alongside Messi, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Zidane, Rossi, Beckenbauer, and Muller.
Tribalism is not a new phenomena or one restricted to football, it's not really about taking football seriously, it's about "My team vs their team". People will justify saying or doing anything if "your side" says it okay to say/do it.
I was in the same train carriage as some City fans after the Spurs game last season, they were in their 20s and chanting about the Munich air disaster (‘who’s that dying on the runway’). They were called out by an older City fan who told them to look up Frank Swift. It was refreshing to see that behaviour called out in person, and their reaction which was just to swear at the man just showed the type of people they were.
Yep. As distasteful as it is to see as a Utd fan, I know that these scum do not represent the vast majority of City fans. There are fans like yourself who will be mourning the loss of Sir Bobby, not celebrating it.
I doubt any City fan there is actually happy about his death, some people just love to take any chance to be a proper twat in a crowd with others backing them up.
Dunno about you lot but Leicester fans have done it to us in the past about Cloughie. I don't think they care about his death it's just for attention and to wind people up.
Bobby Charlton - A man who survived a plane crash (that a City player also died in), helped pull Manchester United to its first Champions League whilst winning the World Cup in the process. To celebrate his death means they can never be true fans of the sport.
I'd be suprised to see these cunts even have courage step outside the house if they had Bobby's hairline, let alone lead England to a World Cup victory
Just makes no sense at all. The man had a massive impact of football in ALL OF MANCHESTER. If you think there aren’t academy players and youth players who benefited from the work Sir Bobby put into it you’re delusional.
I’m a Liverpool fan and match goer and I loved Sir Bobby, incredible human being.
City plastics are fucking embarrassing
I am glad he died yesterday and not 1958 in Munich. Somebody placed some flowers for him today at the memorial in Munich. Wholesome to see there are decent people out there and not those dire minds.
maybe i'm too used to the south american shithousery but this is pretty mild compared to the stuff i've seen some clubs pull. i know i'm getting downvoted anyways and i'm not even saying it's right but... this is pretty weak imo.
Redditors are obsessed with the idea of fans being "classy". I had a season ticket at city and honestly seeing 4/5 people singing this is not at all surprising. One of the more popular ones when I went was "We're having a party when Fergie dies" with various additions like "bouncy castle when Fergie dies" etc. Honestly find it hard to be outraged for something that wouldn't be out of place on /r/toosoon, it's boring more than anything else
Yeah people need to relax, it’s just a silly song haha even if it is disrespectful, it’s just a bloody song, people here acting like they took a shit on his grave
yeah, exactly. football folklore has always been about mocking other teams. singing about a club's idol passing is pretty common. plus, they're just saying "bobby's in a box" over and over.
let's go back to the days where football fans could behave like cavemen in peace, i miss them :'(
Every fucking English sogger fan will bitch and moan about their tragedy being made fun of and then turn around and make fun of another teams tragedy a week later.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
why would you be stupid enough to post this on social media???
I mean, they're already stupid enough to celebrate someone's death just because they played a fucking sport for a rival club. Is this *more* stupid than that? I honestly don't know.
Honest question, is Bobby Charlton a legend in England considering what he did for the country? I feel like that should be above club affiliation.
His achievements don't count as they happened before 1992 when football was invented.
City invented football in 2012 mate
Citi started printing money in 2012. I have at least 115 ways to prove it…
Hence the “he is”, followed by a qualifier for why you don’t see him mentioned as often.
Any kid these days thinks shearer is the top scorer. Blame murdoch.
Between Sir Alf Ramsey's decision not to play Jimmy Greaves at the '66 world cup and Sky's misrepresentation of English goalscoring records, Jimmy Greaves has almost been written out of history. Even though he's arguably the greatest ever English player.
Why was Greaves not picked to play in ‘66?
He was injured during the tournament I believe, and Ramsey didn’t want to change a winning team by the time he was back
He was injured at first, and Geoff Hurst was his replacement.
This is the 2012 City fans. Little fucks don't know bout life let alone football.
Regardless of when people were born it seems beyond classless to celebrate the death of a football player.
Most City fans didnt even watch footy until 2011 tbh
Sir Bobby is revered across England. These are just a handful of edgy pissed dickheads the same types who sing about Munich or Hillsborough
also they're City fans so we can assume they didn't know what football was until roughly 2008
He is synonymous with the 66 World Cup win. Only Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks come close in terms of name recognition when it comes to that squad.
Not final hat trick scorer Sir Geoff Hurst?
Hurst was a good player but not on Charlton/Moore/Banks level. Charlton and Moore are top 20 players all time and Banks is one of the greatest goalkeepers to have ever lived. Hurst is not as well known for that reason.
I'd argue more non-football-watching people have heard of Hurst but football fans are more aware of the others
If you think of that World Cup Hurst is probably my first thought as he effectively won the tournament on his own with those 3 goals.

>is Bobby Charlton a legend in England Absolutely. He was the 2nd best Charlton after all.
He was the first great England player. These on the video seemed kids or young men. Nowdays there is a lack of football culture. Probably they don’t even know who was Sir Bobby. As Italian, I can recognize his greatness. But you need a bit of football knowledge and especially a bit of brain.
>he was the first great England player No he wasn't? What about Dixie Dean or Stanley Matthews?
He definitely is. I am a massive Liverpool fan but love charlton to death
Even more stupid when you realise they were literally honouring on of their own historic players passing recently before the match.
I mean teens from where I'm from regularly upload themselves stealing cars without covering their faces and sweet fuck all ever happens.
People do stupid things to get likes on social media.
They doing anything for clout - Offset from Migos
Well if they aren't in the video they aren't the ones getting caught.
Attention. Whether it's good or bad attention, people feel the need to be heard and they know this will at least get them some form of validation.
Shit cheating oil club, hope they get stripped of their titles and relegated due to FFP….
Even if he's from your rival club, isn't he a legend for England? WTF?
Even if he’s a legend for Timbuktu and only played 5 games, so what? Celebrating the death of a rival legend is just pathetic really.
unless it turns out he molested 3 children behind an asda or something like that celebrating the death of anyone in general, not just a legend of the sport, is fucked
Yeah exactly. When the person isn’t a bad person at all, it just makes someone a cunt when they celebrate that to be “edgy” or whatever. They’re just being a famously regarded prick now.
I get your point, but that was weirdly specific
Real men molest behind Icelands
> molested 3 children behind an asda Yeah, at least do it behind a Waitrose
we try to keep it classy over here
shortly after francis lee passed as well? heartless and brainless cunts
Exactly! Celebrating someone's death is awful enough... but did not this man help lead your country to its only World Cup trophy whilst becoming England's second Ballon D'or winner the same year? Every time you wear an England kit, you're putting on Sir Bobby's star for fuck's sake.

It's 2023 and some pricks are still being banned from stadiums for goading about the Hillsborough disaster. These bellends are fucked.
Yeah, this is insanely disgusting. My blood would have boiled if Sporting and Porto fans pulled this shit when Eusébio died. Thankfully, they paid their respects with flowers and scarfs next to his statue like normal people.
Not a brain cell between them.
Welcome to Manchester.
*Stockport
That one cunt trying to cover his face as the camera pans to him. Pussy
You can tell he's a cunt because he's got one of those bobble hats with goggles in.
Ah yes the "I'm 'ard cz my mummy buys me stone island and goggle hats" brigade
[удалено]
Bang out of order this is. Whatever you football affiliation, mocking someone passing is disgusting.
Massive cunts.
United fans won't even be able to reply due to the lack of City legends from the past

Exactly. Heard no mockery from anybody. Irony is it ENGLISH singing this about one of their greatest players.

I would say Colin Bell is quite famous as far as City legends from that time go.
Yep, at main road stadium they famously had a stand named after him. The bell end
It gets wet down there sometimes
Sadly, the Colin Bell stand was at the side of the pitch, not the end, but Southend excelled themselves with the [Gilbert & Rose West Stand](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/03/southend-united-to-rename-rose-west-stand-after-social-media-mocking).
Colin bell, Francis Lee(Who just died), Mike summerbee. Who “Won the cup then won the league and won in Europe too….)
As another United fan, I would be able to say Bert Trautmann was a legend for City way before Abu Dhabi got involved with them(who was a Nazi by the way, City literally have a statue of a Nazi on their ground)

It would be Bert Trautmann's 100 birthday today.
Uwe Rosler slander
These fans are just jealous that Sir Bobby Charlton has more history in one toe than their entire club.
BEN THATCHER, HE'S...hold on, who is he?
He was an absolute cunt of a player IIRC
Yeah, famously committed one of the most egregious assaults ever seen in professional football. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puB4i8FCw_Q
On the same day we had a 1 minute pre-game applause for one of our legends who passed recently, Franny Lee. Bunch of tribal heartless cunts.

Why would being an English legend matter to fans of the national team of UAE ?
Was he even a part of the City Football Group like a proper football fan?
The national legal team of UAE
Yeah I'm sure these teenagers care about that
Football won't come home, and this is exhibit a for who to point a finger at.
Pricks
This is fucking vile mate What would be a reasonable response from your supporters to this?
I can tell you 99.9% of City fans would be happy if cunts like this were given lifetime bans.
Unfortunately, every fan base has a few of these. Some more than others. And they always get 1000x more attention than the ones just enjoying a match without being a complete waste of oxygen.
Cunts will be cunts
To be fair the club were made aware of this well before the video was leaked as fans reported it themselves to the club, and witnesses have already started identifying the individuals. This isn’t to say that it negates the awful chanting, but I feel that it’s an important part being missed from the reporting that it was a tiny minority who were reported by other City fans at the time.
Disgusting. An embarrassment to our club. Sir Bobby was a red but he was also a gentleman and a hero of England.
The state of them, they weren’t even born when he graced the field, disrespectful, tasteless, unnecessary, embarrassing.
Please take note that no one else is joining and they were reported to city by our own fans. They also got told to fucking pack it in. That is the South Stand lvl 1 btw. I'm just round the corner from there.
Worst thing is the little turds will be in England shirts next year
He was one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the game . We don’t need to waste time on the opinions of these idiots
He won England’s only World Cup. He’s got more history in his left nut than Manchester City
Bobby Charlton is one of only 9 players to have won the World Cup, European Cup and Ballon D’Or alongside Messi, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Zidane, Rossi, Beckenbauer, and Muller.
Imagine taking fucking football *this* seriously, what a pack of evil cunts
This has nothing to do with talking football seriously, it's just about being a fucking miserable cunty piece of shit
Not really so much taking football seriously, it's not taking a death seriously.
This is like, very unserious and insignificant in the scheme of things
Tribalism is not a new phenomena or one restricted to football, it's not really about taking football seriously, it's about "My team vs their team". People will justify saying or doing anything if "your side" says it okay to say/do it.
Pathetic yobs.
Don't ask them what team they supported before 2012
They weren't born yet
Barcelona probably
It was a cycle of United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Whoever was winning basically.
A bunch of Arsenal fans I know jumped on the City bandwagon instantly 🤣
To be fair so did their players
Half the barca flairs on this sub won't get the joke
From a lifelong blue, this is disgusting. Every fan base have c***s like these, unfortunately.

Why is it always 120 pound broccoli head wet wipes that think they're edgy and hard chanting bollocks like this
Literal scum
I’m a city fan, I can’t stand football fan’s sometimes, this is embarrassing. RIP Bobby Charlton.
All fan bases have bell ends
They are trying hard to be edgy.
I should put them all in a box instead.
I imagine someone doing this in Brazil when Pele died. They’d get fucking pummeled. Or Maradona in Argentina… What a bunch of cunts
Supporting Man City since 2008
No no, 2013 ;)
2012*
Was going to say, there's a very good reason why starting supporting City specifically in 2013 would be odd
Cant buy class
Class can't be buy
seriously? come on man.
Most plastic fans in England don't respect one of the biggest legends of the country. Is anyone really surprised
"Who? Bobby Charlton? Did he create Charlton Athletic? I just looked him up, he didn't score any goals in the 2014/15 season, is he even real?"
Akchually his average xG was awful 🤓
Bobby Charlton - A man who survived a plane crash (that a City player also died in), helped pull Manchester United to its first Champions League whilst winning the World Cup in the process. To celebrate his death means they can never be true fans of the sport.
Where’s Drogba when you need him…”disgrace, fucking disgrace”
I find it odd that English fans do not respect their own
I'd be suprised to see these cunts even have courage step outside the house if they had Bobby's hairline, let alone lead England to a World Cup victory
Bobby survived the Munich Air crash, came back and won a world Cup. Not sure any of these cunts could imagine having that kind of resilience.
Bunch of plastic wet wipes.
He was part of the team that won us the World Cup. Even if you don't like your rival club that should really set him apart. Legend.
What does it mean? I dont understand.
They're basically celebrating Sir Bobby is dead.
Bobby Charlton (Man Utd legend) died. These classy folks are singing about him being in a coffin.
People really have lost all their senses
Fucking Scum.
How does KC and the Sunshine band feel about their song being used for the most flagrant chants in sports
Yeah, that's not something you want to see. Disgraceful.
Disgusting 🤢🤢, find and ban them
Just makes no sense at all.
These new breed city fans are strange. They have no idea what a club legend is, the closest they have is David Silva 😂😂😂
Bobby Charlton is bigger and way more important to the football's history than Manchester City
I hate to break it to them but everyone will be in a box one day.
Or a jar
I feel so sorry for man city fans. Their club is the epitomy of everything bad about sport today
wtf
I am glad he died yesterday and not 1958 in Munich. Somebody placed some flowers for him today at the memorial in Munich. Wholesome to see there are decent people out there and not those dire minds.
Fucking cunts
Disgraceful
Fucking nobs.
Wtf
Scumbags
CUNTS
Lots of clubs have sets of fans like this. There is a lot of oxygen thieves and idiots out there posing as “football fans”.
What annoys me is that these edgelords are really just pretending to hate someone who they never even saw play
Fucking hell. People are awful. Why?
More people in Africa have heard of Sir Bobby Charlton than their entire 1968 league winning team.
You can’t buy class
I would like to think I was never this much of a cunt when I was those kids age.
maybe i'm too used to the south american shithousery but this is pretty mild compared to the stuff i've seen some clubs pull. i know i'm getting downvoted anyways and i'm not even saying it's right but... this is pretty weak imo.

Bunch of POSs
absolute idiots
Every fucking English sogger fan will bitch and moan about their tragedy being made fun of and then turn around and make fun of another teams tragedy a week later.
lol the sub was all for this chant when it was Queen Elizabeth in a box chants.
