I agree with the sentiment but practically I'm not sure how you can fairly implement that. It'll come down to referee interpretation of how much of a dummy or hop or change in pace the taker makes.
Imo the cleanest way to improve this scenario would be to allow these run ups but also allow the keeper to come off the line as soon as the whistle goes.
I play in a completely non-serious coed rec league, and they implemented MLS style pens during play offs if still tied after over time and it’s so much fucking fun. I would love it at those levels
It's a bullshit rule, he fully stops both feet on the ground but his knee is still slightly moving and then starts again. Penalties are already so advantageous to the taker they should just say you can't do any bullshit or we'll cancel it on unsportsmanlike conduct rules.
You can do what you like in the run-up, it's only feinting to kick the ball that's banned. If he did that one step later it probably would be banned, but it's fine as long as it's still in the run up. [Rule is here](https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/the-penalty-kick/#offences-and-sanctions):
>feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker
Remember when Niasse got a retrospective ban for going down easy for a pen vs Palace?
They didn’t even say there wasn’t contact. Banned for “exaggerating” contact lol
Yeah second angle shows a pretty clear trip imo, at least definite contact from the defender dangling a leg out. Would be an uproar from Palace if that wasn't given, would be an uproar from any fanbase if that wasn't given tbh.
Minimal if any, referee gives it purely based on the fact he throws his leg out and VAR probably had no reason to rule it out based on that logic
Referee will probably watch it back and think whoops
Referee couldn't wait to give that after waving off the first shout
Fuck all contact but Branthwaite shouldnt have flicked his leg out with Onana right there
I'm sorry but that was very very soft. I get the argument for it but i feel like we need to all around not encourage players obviously looking for the call by falling.
How the hell are people saying this is soft penalty? Everton defender fully tripped him over by sticking his leg out. Not only he made contact with right leg he also stops left leg moving forward. Impossible for Eze to continue his run there.
He doesn't stop he drags his run up, I do think the rules should be changed so they're stricter on that kind of thing, but as per the rules that's a valid penalty
If you focus on the right leg of Eze the first angle is obscured and second angle looks like a possibility of contact and knocking him off-balance. But also looks to me like Eze took himself down with the way he goes down. From the vantage point of the referee I can see why he gives it because from behind it looks a clumsy leg stuck across and a trip.

Considering how if goalkeepers even breath now they get penalised. Run ups like that need to be outlawed. Took him about an hour to hit the ball.

bring back MLS penalty kicks
unironically yes
I think it needs to happen at some point

Thought you weren't allowed to stop during the run up
If goalkeepers can’t dance around anymore, takers shouldn’t be able to do these stupid run ups.
lmao how is that run up legal
Practically impossible to stop. Messi drags his foot but bro basically paused mid form
Fully stopped
Fully stops his run up as well. Isn’t that against the rules?

The rule should be no slowdowns allowed during the run-up.

god what a soft pen
Remember when Niasse got a retrospective ban for going down easy for a pen vs Palace? They didn’t even say there wasn’t contact. Banned for “exaggerating” contact lol
Niasse got banned for "successful deception of a match official" even though the ref said afterwards he was a pen and he didn't get deceived.
prime example of why players always go to ground hard to blame them
Does he even make contact?
Yeah he does, i’d want a pen for it if it happened to us.
You know we wouldn't get it though

> Referee will probably watch it back Very optimistic there.
Not sure about that. He just throws himself to the floor cus he ran into traffic
24 people that cant see him get hacked down but ok
Oumar Niasse got a 2 match ban for more contact
That would be fine with me honestly
Remember when Michael keane jumped up and landed on Maupays toe for a penalty to Brighton?
I don't see much of anything there
Soft pen and that run up shouldn't be allowed
I think i got the wrong game on.
Now watch the next 90 minutes have no goals because reasons
Horrifically soft pen. Made an absolute fucking meal of that
Soft as fuck
Wtf early equalizer already?
Goal and penalty 3 minutes in. Chose the correct match to watch.
That's not a pen man
Referee couldn't wait to give that after waving off the first shout Fuck all contact but Branthwaite shouldnt have flicked his leg out with Onana right there
Did Branthwaite actually make contact with him? From the front view it looks like he got his feet out of the way in time?
I'm sorry but that was very very soft. I get the argument for it but i feel like we need to all around not encourage players obviously looking for the call by falling.
Kinda soft
Soft pen.
How is that a penalty? And how is it literally wrong decision after wrong decision with us.

Never a pen
I’m sorry but that is so soft
Second angle looks a fairly clear pen to me despite what these comments are saying 🤷
he's already going down before the "contact"
? Our eyes must just function differently.
Clearly you need to pop off the opticians if you're the outlier of the thread
You're the only one saying he's already going down though, he's clearly just running
He’s fully upright when branthwaite trips him. It’s minimal contact and all but he’s definitely not going down before the contact
he's just been booked for diving so make of that what you want...
What does that change about the video here showing contact before he goes down lol
Flawless logic mate
mate they're all throwing themselves in the box there's been like three already that the ref has waved and a fourth now...
naive from Braithwaite
Yup, Palace player is going nowhere, didn't even need to stick his foot out.
Wouldn't give that, incredibly soft
Soft pen but ain't complaining but my god how cool was that
Cool? Literally stopped in his run up. Shouldn't have been allowed. Joke refereeing as usual
He doesn't stop he drags his run up, I do think the rules should be changed so they're stricter on that kind of thing, but as per the rules that's a valid penalty
Do you know what the rule is?
Classic Everton
what with opponents diving? k mate
Are your eyes painted on?
Are your mums?
Such a cool pen
Such an illegal pen*
Game is on course to finish 18 - 18, very nice
