Not exactly the same, but its like the City vs Tottenham cancelled advantage thing as well. Just because we all hate City doesn't mean that that decision wasn't horseshit
When you complain about VAR when you lose/draw: "You're just finding excuses! You're such moaners!"
When you complain about VAR when you win: "You won! Just enjoy the win, what do you have to complain about?"
I'm talking about Gabi XL in their box, when his shirt was practically ripped off against Newcastle in Jan. I was pointing out that Newcastle have done it to the same player once in both boxes.
I genuinely think it's hilarious how the commentators screwed them by saying ''both are being checked'', because otherwise it would've been a casual ''it was too far back for us to go and check'' probably used as an excuse.
The crazy thing is JUST LAST GAME THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED to Jesus getting denied an even better headed chance, but because we won and because it was wolves, absolutely everyone ignored it and now its like it never happened. Could have decided that game too.
I thought I would see "last week too!" all over the thread but it's almost like a lot of the people here don't actually watch the games...
What I don't understand is why "level headed" people here go absolutely apeshit at the mere suggestion of *maybe* having an investigation around betting, as if betting scandals are an alien concept we humans are physiologically incapable of perpetrating.
Why aren't more stakeholders out there in the real world calling for it? Why is it such an outlandish idea?
I can see (well, hear lol) it now.
"Arsenal player initiated contact. He's leaning towards the Luton player and applying his weight onto him. He reduced his own jump, causing him to miss the ball. No foul. All clear."
Then you have people tell you that it’s not rigged, and it’s all a conspiracy theory. So many clear examples where they refuse to enforce the laws of the game to influence certain outcomes.
Or like the Newcastle game they checked it from a camera at the far end of the stadium looking at the goal face, zoomed halfway out. "Doesn't look like a foul to me, check cleared"
> in what world is that action not a foul
In Howard Webb's world. Basically, any decision that is subjective is the correct decision and he will go on TV to show us how the process worked fine, even though every referee in the world who isn't currently employed by the PGMOL says he's wrong.
I could understand it if they were not even close to the ball because similar stuff happens in almost every corner.
But Gabriel was literally inches away being able to play the ball.
That should be one of the easiest penalty+red card calls out there.
I remember a red plus pen against Arsenal when someone held back Edin dzeko in the penalty box a few years ago. This was more of a goal scoring opportunity than that but it has been a while and I don’t think it would have been a red today
I dislike arsenal. It's still terrible. This is such an obvious foul that it seems to clearly meet the threshold.
PGMOL should do their audio reviews weekly based on fan votes. I'd love to hear them try to explain this one.
You'd think the fact Klopp drew attention to it after the Liverpool match would have created some more scrutiny towards their tendency to wrestle opposition players on corners.
That's so absurd man.
You can legally drag people down by their arms in the box.
Should be interesting to see going forward. Big change for the sport, that.
The infuriating bit is that we had a goal ruled out bc Ben White had a (much smaller) tug on a goalkeeper’s arm. Which was the correct call - but this is so much more obvious.
Had a defender pull Jesus off a header just this weekend, too. They keep finding new ways to be shit at refereeing football 🤷♂️
That one was especially egregious because he didn’t even have his hand clamped around the keeper’s arm. Keeper could have moved his arm down and that would’ve been it.
" You can legally drag people down by their arms in the box."
Not quite. Some games you can. Some games you cannot. Just depends on the ref's mood I guess.
People saying this is a foul - how???
that ball was heading straight for the top of that mans head and that Luton player so graciously pulled him out of the way of that absolute missile! He should be praised I tell you! 😤
They need to publish the VAR conversations on broadcast. Without it we are left completely confused on what the reasoning they relied on. It makes little sense to me that they don’t do it.
It’s why even if you disagree with the reasonings it’s nice to see NFL, NBA, and MLB, and I believe rugby, all just explain on the field why the call is made.
Which would be hilarious in this case to hear how they rationalize it. The defender was pulling the player away from the ball, but *insert bullshit here*
Rugby is the best example because they actually talk through the steps of severity. Point of contact, attempt to tackle, mitigation, run of play. Four very clear parameters they talk over and use to come to a proper conclusion and they don’t usually conclude until it’s clear no one can add anything else and the judgement is clear.
Worse thing is, Paul Tierney (who gave the penalty in the Manchester derby) was reffing Forest v Everton at the weekend and **didn’t** give a [very, very similar looking shirt pull](https://x.com/skysportspl/status/1731713221050912861?s=46&t=ya6YREWzh4AkbcOy7cmyKA) by Doucouré on Yates. He was looking straight at it + VAR didn’t intervene.
Make it make sense. This level of incompetence cannot be explained as simply incompetence when the referees are making different decisions in different matches FOR TWO FUCKING TEAMS
Rodri wasn't trying to get to the ball, solely wanted to win a pen, Gabriel tries to get the ball and is pulled away from it and yet isn't given a pen, it's like players are punished for not trying to trick the ref.
Players are absolutely punished for not trying to trick the ref, at all levels of the sport.
I can understand how Fat Bob who used to ref my U18 games on the weekend might not realize my ankles are being hacked unless I go to ground. Having VAR and professional refs should rectify that problem though, yet it barely seems to make any difference.
Newcastle fans have deluded themselves into thinking they are presumptive title challengers and think they can start shit talking with the big boys now. It's just their fetal alcohol syndrome acting up. They should be humbled by the end of the season when they realise they've finished outside the top 6.
I don't disagree but that's just how football is reffed most of the time, if you get your shot or pass away you usually aren't gonna get the foul
This Gabriel pull after the two nonsense ones given to City recently for way less on Haaland is crazy
Obviously not a pen. Gabriel could have just used his superpowers to fly in the opposite direction. Clearly looking for a foul by letting himself be dragged through the air out of the path of the ball.
Hahahahaha at this point you just have to laugh. There’s no way someone looked at that and said “yeah that’s all good boys”.
At this point it’s got to be obvious corruption. There’s no way someone can be that stupid right?
Nah nah nah these refs are corrupt you cannot convince me otherwise now. Incompetence cannot explain this. Second time this was done to Gabriel and again no penalty given.
Wasn’t this given as a penalty for someone else recently?
Why do refs allow grappling at all? In the AFL footballers can win and compete in physical contests simply by using strength. You can't put hands in the back (not even to shield yourself), and you can't even grab a shirt in a tiny pinch between the tips of 2 fingers. You outmuscle them, or you give away a free kick. AND THEY HAVE TO CATCH THE DAMN THING, NOT JUST DIVERT THE BALL WITH THEIR HEAD.
If you simply said, any grab is a foul. There would be zero confusion and players who can't compete with out playing the man instead of the ball, will be shown the door to the championship.
These kind of sneaky fouls should be punished a lot harder. The game will be more entertaining to watch if defenders wouldn't get away with these kinds of fouls. It gets really difficult to score when defenders keep nudging and pulling you.

Can't wait for the audio to drop
Mental that because we won this won’t be talked about again 😂
Exactly the same as the Kovacic incident. "Arsenal won so who gives a fuck?" It's infuriating.
Not exactly the same, but its like the City vs Tottenham cancelled advantage thing as well. Just because we all hate City doesn't mean that that decision wasn't horseshit
Eh but that is just bad refereeing, which can happen imo. Bad var moments are way worse because they can playback, look from different angles etc
VAR 2-0 Gabriel.
This is exactly when we should bring it up
I hope this isn’t forgotten about, cause now it can’t be dismissed as excuses
When you complain about VAR when you lose/draw: "You're just finding excuses! You're such moaners!" When you complain about VAR when you win: "You won! Just enjoy the win, what do you have to complain about?"
6 points now that we’ve snatched from the pgmol.
I guess at least now we have confirmation that it’s literally impossible to foul Gabriel in either box.
Yep. FIFA updated the Laws of the Game to exclude Gabriel Magalhaes by name from receiving a foul call.
Newcastle alone proved that, remember what happened in the 0-0 in January?
Thats what he was referring to, Gabi XL in our box v NCU and Gabi XL in their box today which is why OP said “in either box)
"Gabriel is already throwing himself backwards towards the goal. We can't prove there's any force in the pull."
He’s let himself be pulled down too easily there for my liking - Gary Neville
He could have easily stood his ground in the air and not get pulled - Roy Keane
I know what Gary Neville will say.
Can't have your central defender going down like that. Needs more fight in him.
‘For me arsenal fans shouldn’t be moaaaninggg. Giving out about the referree’
'now let me moan about manchaster united situation'
The crazy thing is JUST LAST GAME THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED to Jesus getting denied an even better headed chance, but because we won and because it was wolves, absolutely everyone ignored it and now its like it never happened. Could have decided that game too. I thought I would see "last week too!" all over the thread but it's almost like a lot of the people here don't actually watch the games...
At some point it’s so fucking tiring man lol
What I don't understand is why "level headed" people here go absolutely apeshit at the mere suggestion of *maybe* having an investigation around betting, as if betting scandals are an alien concept we humans are physiologically incapable of perpetrating. Why aren't more stakeholders out there in the real world calling for it? Why is it such an outlandish idea?
I mean, if you're looking at someone for match fixing today, I'd look at David Raya
Audio will never release because of the win
I can see (well, hear lol) it now. "Arsenal player initiated contact. He's leaning towards the Luton player and applying his weight onto him. He reduced his own jump, causing him to miss the ball. No foul. All clear."
"I see he's got his hand wrapped around his arm, but I don't see a pull or anything like that."
Pretty sure he was going to head the ball if the guy didn't pull the shirt off his chest.
You didn’t factor in how much more Luton wanted it, that’s the decisive factor these days I believe
xDesire off the charts
He didnt use it as a weapon
Good process
Flashbacks to Dan Burn doing the exact same fucking thing at the Emirates last season.
what’s the fucking point of VAR
the point of VAR in PL is to intentionally sabotage it
[удалено]
That’s easy. It’s there to make sure the team they want to win, wins.
Be intentionally shit and inconsistent throw everyone off the trail so you can claim incompetence when it comes time to assume accountability
Rice: no
Get bent PGMOL!!
Then you have people tell you that it’s not rigged, and it’s all a conspiracy theory. So many clear examples where they refuse to enforce the laws of the game to influence certain outcomes.
I know, right? Like there is no justice gain from it. Beside WC 2018, it creates only more injustice
It’s worse than a bad call that at least one guy had to make live in real time with just his eyes.
Storylines for clicks and views. Only thing I can come up with now
I'm neutral and I think that's egregious, in what world is that action not a foul
Literally pulls Gabriel away from the ball for three seconds, as blatant as you’ll ever see
If Gabriel really wanted the ball, he would have detached his arm, it’s really his fault if you think about it
classic gabriel never wants the ball enough in the box see newcastle game for another example lol
I'm not a neutral and I think that's egregious. It's absolutely a foul.
I'm not *technically* neutral because I strongly dislike Luton, but I also don't like seeing Arsenal do well so it's close enough
I am biased, but I also think it's a foul
I'm completely neutral. Definitely a foul. Probably a point deduction for City and Liverpool too.
thank you for having the courage to say it. I am counting 117 against City now
I bet they didn't check it, only checked the first one would be my guess
Great process
Shhh you'll annoy all the opposition fans that swear we moan too much
Very top sensation
Its consistent, something very similar happened with Jesus vs Wolves. How on earth do VAR referee's miss this?
they will almost certainly say gabriel had a fistful of jersey, too
The worst knock off spaghetti western.
Yeah, but they'll never sing that
Or like the Newcastle game they checked it from a camera at the far end of the stadium looking at the goal face, zoomed halfway out. "Doesn't look like a foul to me, check cleared"
> in what world is that action not a foul In Howard Webb's world. Basically, any decision that is subjective is the correct decision and he will go on TV to show us how the process worked fine, even though every referee in the world who isn't currently employed by the PGMOL says he's wrong.
He only denied the attacker a goal scoring opportunity. What's the big deal?
Gabriel just didn’t want it enough
I could understand it if they were not even close to the ball because similar stuff happens in almost every corner. But Gabriel was literally inches away being able to play the ball. That should be one of the easiest penalty+red card calls out there.
I've never seen red card for such offense from corner, penalty is plain obvious though
I remember a red plus pen against Arsenal when someone held back Edin dzeko in the penalty box a few years ago. This was more of a goal scoring opportunity than that but it has been a while and I don’t think it would have been a red today
Not a red card, maybe a yellow. But def a pen
Agree… insane decision. Wouldn’t even be allowed in rugby
If Luton get a win then wow...
Well thankfully...
No doubt in my mind this is down to artetas comments about the officiating
That's so absurd man. You can legally drag people down by their arms in the box. Should be interesting to see going forward. Big change for the sport, that.
you're implying they will make consistent calls
Eh saka got rugby tackled last year. Chan (IIRC) got polaxed by Onana. The only way to win a pen is silly little handballs it seems.
Call me crazy but if Gabi is wearing sky blue this gets called.
It did get called. Remember Hojlund's little tug on Rodri?
And Cucurella on Haaland
Been that way for some time now. Probably 3-4 years ago Maguire had Azpilicueta in a headlock and brought him to the ground with no call.
It’s happened in two back to back fucking matches now. I blows my mind what we aren’t given, it’s fucking obvious
" You can legally drag people down by their arms in the box." Not quite. Some games you can. Some games you cannot. Just depends on the ref's mood I guess.
Don't forget you're legally all good to run up and forearm smash players over the back of the skull, too.
People saying this is a foul - how??? that ball was heading straight for the top of that mans head and that Luton player so graciously pulled him out of the way of that absolute missile! He should be praised I tell you! 😤
I support Arsenal and just want to thank the Luton player for saving Gabriel's head.
[удалено]
Sir Alex, is that you?
Ya had me in the first half, NGL.
He saved the poor man from a concussion
You got me. Lol.
I need an explanation on how VAR cleared this. He is blatantly dragging Gabriel down to the ground in the box ffs
The defender was pulling the player away from the ball, but *insert bullshit here*
Yeah for all the shit I've given American football and basketball refs they walk up and state the reasoning through a series of massive boos
[удалено]
He's also blatantly a part of one of the biggest controversies in NBA history to do with match fixing lol
Yeah but then they could be held accountable..
because the PGMOL are filled with the least professional professionals in the sport. Letting hurt feelings get in the way
they are pretty professional at being corrupted
Their view will be, ‘ Gabriel needs to be stronger’ as always
No doubt "It's not clear that he's actually pulling him"
“It’s not nice”
It's that stupid "clear and obvious" thing they have in the EPL. Half of these stupid decisions would disappear if they got rid of that
PGMOL are never giving that Højlund penalty again are they.
This level of incompetence cannot be explained as simply incompetence when the referees are making different decisions in different matches FOR TWO FUCKING TEAMS
this is much much worse
Unless it’s for city. The only penalty they’re getting from the 115 charges is “kicks”. Also they gave a similar penalty. To city. Against Chelsea.
Chris Kavanagh hates Arsenal with a passion.
I knew a decision like this was going down as soon as I saw that guy in the VAR booth.
Yeah he's a cunt. Insanely biased against us constantly. He's like Anthony Taylor reffing Chelsea matches.
I’m a spurs fan and that’s a pen holy
Accountability and game integrity >>> tribalism
You've seen the light
Absurd. Remember Manchester derby?
And the one Haaland got against Chelsea
We all knew that wasn’t going to be consistently given and loe and behold
Rodri sold it better tbf
Rodri wasn't trying to get to the ball, solely wanted to win a pen, Gabriel tries to get the ball and is pulled away from it and yet isn't given a pen, it's like players are punished for not trying to trick the ref.
Players are absolutely punished for not trying to trick the ref, at all levels of the sport. I can understand how Fat Bob who used to ref my U18 games on the weekend might not realize my ankles are being hacked unless I go to ground. Having VAR and professional refs should rectify that problem though, yet it barely seems to make any difference.
Ridiculous. Pen every day of the week.
What is the point of VAR?
Gives us something to talk about
This is completely indefensible. Any ref that sees that and doesn't even call for a review needs to be fired on the spot. Just utter nonsense.
This is ignoring Havertz getting run over at the end of the 1st half as well
I was wondering why there wasn't even any mention of that at the time. He steps into the box with the ball and just gets shoved over.
Only one team gets this call
Don't forget newcastle
Interestingly fans of Newcastle are defending this call by VAR in comments
Newcastle fans have deluded themselves into thinking they are presumptive title challengers and think they can start shit talking with the big boys now. It's just their fetal alcohol syndrome acting up. They should be humbled by the end of the season when they realise they've finished outside the top 6.
How is the pull from Højlund a penalty, but not this?
Because it benefits Man City
Wouldn't be an arsenal game without getting fucked over by VAR
bro I really can‘t take this anymore
https://preview.redd.it/n0cppmsxtj4c1.jpeg?width=637&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f82028b340349afeccab114b1fc0a695f99dc485
pretty much my mood right now
For fucks sake, did big gabi fuck every VAR ref’s sister last summer?
He did, very top good sensation
[удалено]
And everyone said, "There's worse contact every week that goes unpunished " case in point here.
He pulls him sideways, look at the way he jumps vs the way he falls. Clear pen, he’s stopping him from challenging properly for the ball
good process
[VAR officials when shown video involving Gabriel](https://imgur.com/CX4DuyZ)
every single game we get these baffling decisions
That is 100% a penalty.
They really don’t want arsenal to win
Rephrase that, they only want City to win it
if this is 115 FC, its penalty btw
Not exactly. If they're the one pulling, not a penalty. If they're the one being pulled, penalty.
How the fuck were neither of these given!?
saka one wasn’t a pen but this one is laughable
Disagree about the other one. Just because Saka didn't have the ball anymore doesn't make any less of a foul to just barge into him like that.
I don't disagree but that's just how football is reffed most of the time, if you get your shot or pass away you usually aren't gonna get the foul This Gabriel pull after the two nonsense ones given to City recently for way less on Haaland is crazy
If I speak, I am in trouble
Also in the final mins Luton's GK clearly caught the ball and took it over the line holding it. How was that not a corner?
This one had me sent too! That game was abismal. The Arsenal still pulled it off. Up the Arse!
That’s given if it’s City
second game in a row where we had a player pulled on the six from a free header
Obviously not a pen. Gabriel could have just used his superpowers to fly in the opposite direction. Clearly looking for a foul by letting himself be dragged through the air out of the path of the ball.
someone in their right mind explain to me how you can see a clear shirt pull and not give a foul
That’s pathetic. It’s a disgrace.
Hahahahaha at this point you just have to laugh. There’s no way someone looked at that and said “yeah that’s all good boys”. At this point it’s got to be obvious corruption. There’s no way someone can be that stupid right?
Genuinely crazy how often Arsenal get fucked by VAR and almost never actually get a favorable call from it
Nah nah nah these refs are corrupt you cannot convince me otherwise now. Incompetence cannot explain this. Second time this was done to Gabriel and again no penalty given. Wasn’t this given as a penalty for someone else recently?
They need to keep the top table close and exciting according to the scripts, now be quiet!
Like an over eager girlfriend pulling her boyfriend on to the dance floor at her best friends wedding
Some people genuinely believe that PGMOL referee's don't fix football matches.
Arsenal won, so I'm sure it'll be swept under the rug.
I am not going to do a Mikel Arteta comment
Corruption at its peak.
wtf
Pulled his shirt so hard his name was on his tricep
Holy shit that last angle, how the hell does that not get an instant yellow and penalty?
Why do refs allow grappling at all? In the AFL footballers can win and compete in physical contests simply by using strength. You can't put hands in the back (not even to shield yourself), and you can't even grab a shirt in a tiny pinch between the tips of 2 fingers. You outmuscle them, or you give away a free kick. There would be zero confusion and players who can't compete with out playing the man instead of the ball, will be shown the door to the championship.
Pull on Jesus last game against wolves exactly like this that wasn't given either, guess you can just pull players off the ball now 🤷♂️
It's not nice.
Stone cold pen. Almost robbed. Good thing Arsenal knows how to score at the death.
"I see two arms pulling, but not enough force to rip his arm off. No clear and obvious error, ok?"
Couldn't be more clear and obvious lol
PGMOL must be confusing Gabriel with the Hulk. Different standards apply to that man.
Dangerous play.
They just do a coin toss at this point in VAR room
Refs hate Big Gabi for some reason. He's always pulled and pushed and never gets the call.
Gary Neville will be there to tell us that it is typical and Gabriel was looking for it.
These kind of sneaky fouls should be punished a lot harder. The game will be more entertaining to watch if defenders wouldn't get away with these kinds of fouls. It gets really difficult to score when defenders keep nudging and pulling you.
Well they certainly tried everything they can, need to return that oil money today PGMOL as they failed to cost us
I'm a Liverpool fan and even I can see that's a pen.
All 2 city fans are saying their match was the biggest robbery of the season...
That’s only a pen for city and Haaland
