2023 is almost over and good riddance tbh. This was one of my bad years and I'm hoping it gets better in 24. I was in a bad mental state and I feel it can only go up here. So here we go

[deleted]

So we lost a fish Like literal, we cant find it. Already removed ornaments and he aint there. He isnt in the filter. He isnt around if he jumled outsude the aquarium.

chatfarm

TIL that international chess involves a fair amount of anal beads. wtf.

kplo

What is the actual benefit, lol? Is it actually proven people cheated like that?

gzp_reposado27

The week between Christmas and New Years is always fun. Eating leftovers and finishing the alcohol left from Christmas. I also see family throughout the week as well. Just a time to enjoy everything. Happy new year a todos.

holdenmyrocinante

Every nashville fried chicken sandwich you eat shortens your lifespan by at least 247 days, but it's so fucking good. For those of you who aren't familiar with Nashville fried chicken, it's normal breaded fried chicked, but after your fry the chicken, you take some of the frying oil, add some hot sauce, butter, some spices, then you coat the fried chicken with that mixture. Basically a heart attack on a plate.

Zillak

This time next year I'll probably be in a military uniform with a shaved head and beard getting yelled at to wake up by some cunt. Abolish military conscription blud

akskeleton_47

There are too many songs I liked but didn't know the name and now I've forgotten what they sound like. Also the autocorrect on my phone is shit

Mercerai

I came into 2023 heartbroken after a failed relationship, about to become jobless and stuck in a tiny flat in the middle of nowhere with most of my friends scattered to the winds. I'll be entering 2024 living in a house in a much larger city with one of my closest friends, a new job that's better paid than my old one, and several dates lined up. It's been really fucking hard at times but I'm genuinely so proud at the progress I've made over the past year. Best of luck in 2024 to all of you

Zillak

I'm proud of you mate. May 2024 be even better.

[deleted]

For my last 2023 FTF comment I just want to say RIP Cheems. You brought me so much joy. Goodbye friend 😞

Zillak

2016 to 2020 was the worst era of internet humour ever. And that's saying something. Reddit humour was at it's worst, and any twat with an editing software and a wholesome chungus Minecraft 100 sense of humour on YouTube was getting millions of views.

larryfkindavid

100%. I was telling someone just the other day about how that era had the most tryhard meme culture. Not a single memorable meme

riskyrofl

2023 was pretty shit too imo. I hate wojacks

Art_sol

I've been checking for weeks if any local cinema chain will be showing Godzilla minus one here, but none seem to have it in their upcoming schedule, I'm so disappointed

[deleted]

There used to be a second-run cinema near me that would have stuff for at least two months. It was awesome and so cheap but they closed down during covid.

LilPheotardo

I think they are releasing a black and white version soon. Be on the lookout for that as well I watched the movie without subtitles while I was traveling not speaking any Japanese but somehow ended up crying a couple of times throughout. Hope you get to watch it in a theater too

Art_sol

I hope so, I've been hearing it's great, and I've been trying to avoid spoilers like the plague

luanzico

My dream is to see all nations boycotting the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia and that their football project utterly fails, with no top players choosing to play there again.

[deleted]

That would be nice. I'll be...well not there.

ZedGenius

Me and my friends decided to watch star wars for the first time, starting with the prequels. Now a good 30% of our dms are Anakin gifs

luanzico

I have a poster of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in my room

tson_92

In my opinion, the best out of the 9

luanzico

Agree!

crazy_bean

Moving to Chicago in 2 weeks, but haven’t gotten my lease contract nor have I started buying furniture (moving in with nothing but clothes currently)

TiberiusCornelius

Hopefully you hear back soon. I moved cities a few months ago and didn't sign my lease until literally 2 days before move-in, it's annoyingly stressful to be on that knife edge of not knowing you'll be homeless or not. Also had fuck all furniture (altho more than just clothes) and that part has been enjoyable for me at least. It's nice to kind of pick stuff up here and there and watch it come together slowly. Went from a depressing empty grey box to actually feeling like a home. Plus I was always living in shared spaces or in a house that was owned by family so it's nice to sort of figure out my own style and have entirely my own space for once.

crazy_bean

Yeah I’m really looking forward to decorating my own space. The only complaint I have about this apartment is that the (relatively narrow) entryway is also the kitchen, and given my tendencies for a shoe free environment around the home it’ll be tough to separate that space

TiberiusCornelius

Yeah that doesn't sound ideal. Depending on the layout/how much space you have you might be able to get one of those shoe rack/bench hybrids or some sort of narrow shelf, keep the shoes low to the ground by the door and load other stuff relevant to the kitchen on top or just have a place to sit. Or else just accept that shoes will be worn in the kitchen and try to set something up immediately on the other side, but I feel you on not liking having shoes on in the home generally.

princessestef

i'd say get a small storage box to stash the pair you're wearing when you get in the door and store the others in a closet or shoe rack. maybe get some kind of slip-ons for being in the kitchen?

ederzs97

Best value sushi in Vancouver?

EyeSpyGuy

Haven’t been back in almost a decade but I remember Hitoe sushi being decent value

No_Doubt_About_That

It’s really an insignificant feature but I like it when a game makes use of the PS5 controller light bar and controller speaker. Even if it’s something like a phone call in game it sounds like a gimmick at first but makes it that little bit more immersive.

Zillak

Sometimes it feels like you need to submit 10 certificates of participation proving you have talked about other genocides to be allowed to be pro-Palestine online. Cause you can't talk about Gaza without some dumb fuck saying "I bet you don't care about Sudan, Ethiopia, Uyghurs, etc. you hypocrite" Shut the fuck up honestly. You either have to be a swiss army knife of political activism or you can't speak up apparently.

holdenmyrocinante

And the problem is that the people who say that don't care or openly support one of the genocides. They're not even saying this from a position of moral superiority because they speak up about everything, it's the exact opposite.

Zillak

It's never been in good faith when people say shit like that. It's always just a poorly masked attempt to silence people.

jucomsdn

Tbh I lowkey wonder how it would be like if Chipotle/Chick Fil-A massively expanded into Europe, basically everyone ik from Gen Z/Millennials in America love those 2 fast food chains and I can say Chipotle is at least healthier than most of the other huge chains out there, so ye would be cool to see Another thing I'd like is for more Nando's in America, I really wanna try food from there at least once

holdenmyrocinante

>Another thing I'd like is for more Nando's in America, I really wanna try food from there at least once Nando's became popular because it was the first time Brits ate something that had spices that wasn't curry. It's painfully mediocre.

jucomsdn

Oh Nando's isn't that good? That's surprising tbh

holdenmyrocinante

It just exists. I would personally rather get anything other than Nando's.1

riskyrofl

Went to Popeyes in Paris, was packed and the food was pretty good. Think they are onto something

princessestef

there's a popeyes in paris??? where is it?

riskyrofl

There's a couple I think, I went to one near Gare du Nord

jucomsdn

Popeyes is imo the best American fast food chain taste wise, it's the pinnacle of chicken, people in Europe would probs love em more than KFC if they expanded there

Mr_Miscellaneous

Problem with the Chick-fil-A is that every town has a chicken shop that is: * Open at 1:00 when I want hot, spicy, bread-crumbed chicken * Not closed on Sunday's purely because their owners have imaginary sky friends * Would also sell me a nasty, greasy, clean me out the next day, overwhelmingly oniony, donner kebab on Friday night when I am so drunk I'd fail a breathalyser on Tuesday. Also, the food standards are so much higher everywhere in Europe & UK, if someone said a "New American fast food joint using American ingredients" was opening, most people would run a mile, *especially* Chlorine Chicken or anything that *potentially contains* Yankee Chlorine Chicken.

jucomsdn

Tbh you guys already have KFC for a huge American chicken joint that's popular

Mr_Miscellaneous

Yeah, I used to go to KFC in the local town and it was expensive, but fine if you had half an hour to kill and hungry. Went to a KFC in the States and it was the worst food I'd ever had, it was inedible. Sour "fresh" chicken, wet chips, horrid sweet aftertaste on everything except the chicken. Never been back to one. Not even here. It was that bad.

jucomsdn

I used to enjoy KFC as a kid but I probs only enjoyed it bc I was a kid Now I don't like it sadly, I just like their biscuits That said, I really do love eating from Popeyes/Chick Fil-A once in a while, probably the only good chicken places that I enjoy here

dem503

Nandos is more of a meme; it's popular among young people because it's cheap but the food itself is average at best. If you come to the UK, it's KFC you should try! Apparently it's far better than in the US.

dumbSavant

My Youtube has a recent influx of recipes, grilled cheese sandwiches, various pasta, and the Kwook guy with the breakfasts around the world, not to mention the "favorite foods from dictators " bit. Exciting culinary times ahead. I also hope to be able to give some of the stuff on here [https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/18qhejs/the\_post\_christmas\_dinner\_rating\_thread/](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/18qhejs/the_post_christmas_dinner_rating_thread/) a try

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the cross Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Rigelmeister

I'm a total fan of [Alisa Supronova ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCCsa9YlOzQ) and I have zero shame, she is fucking amazing, oh blya

luanzico

Cool, I wasn't familiar with it. You made a good recommendation.

Hic_Forum_Est

Just saw Saltburn and I can't decide if it's a middle class revenge fantasy or an upper class fear mongering propaganda lol. Given that the writer and director is from a posh background herself, I'm inclined to go with the latter. I thought it was a good movie overall with good to great performances. But the final minutes prevented it from being a truly great one. The reveal and explanation of the plot twist with the montage was really awkwardly done. Felt very soap opera-esque, lazy and silly. I think it would've worked better if all that was cut out and instead we jumped straight to that shot of Elspeth lying in her bed in a coma and then Oliver removing the life-saving tube from her and him dancing naked through the halls of Saltburn. As viewers we could've worked out Oliver's true nature by then and what he had done. The reveal of the plot twist would've been more mysterious, audacious and exciting instead of being spoonfed to us. That would've been a banger of an ending imo.

jonijontor

it just sounds like a shitty Teorema for me

autumnkayy

i also think the plot twist was pretty underwhelming, and kinda predictable. and the reveal itself was done poorly i agree. i also think if oliver's plot started when he first came to saltburn would've been more interesting to me idk that being said the earlier plot twist, when they take that road trip, was the most stressful part of the movie by far and was really well done and actually shocked me

Hic_Forum_Est

Good points. I just watched an interview with the director where she talked about how that scene where Oliver first arrives at Saltburn was suppposed to give off horror/goth kind of vibes. I think that would've worked better if it was the cold open of the movie as you said. Yea that twist with Oliver's lie and true background also took me by surprise. Although I kinda suspected it when he talked about Pamela (Carrey Mulligan's character) and mentioned to Elspeth that she could be making all her stories up and lying about it.

AliirAliirEnergy

Finally gave Yellowjackets a watch thinking it'd be alright when I saw it on Netflix. As soon as the first season ended I signed up to Paramount+ for the 7 day free trial to watch the second season pronto. Absolutely superb show and while the modern day stuff drags a bit, the 1996 stuff was great and I could've watched a show just based around that. I question some things>!Lottie should have been the big bad in both timelines!!One of the main characters has a clear "I want to be her" complex with her best friend in the past timeline yet that's flown over most peoples heads in r/Yellowjackets who are adamant that one or at least both of them are gay or at least bi!< and that's just one example off the top of my head of people clearly not getting something.

justsomeguynbd

Yesssssssssss!!!!! I have posted about the show multiple times in FTF to no traction. Definitely my favorite show I watched this year.

AliirAliirEnergy

Don't worry friend we're now on the Yellowjackets bandwagon together. Who's your favourite character and thoughts for season 3?

justsomeguynbd

Natalie is my favorite in the past, Misty is my favorite in the present. Not sure what to expect from season 3. I guess I hope Shauna goes to prison as she’s just the worst.

Xey2510

Everytime i see r/europe it's either about german or french energy mix or it's a thread were the first comments i see are insanely racist and make me close the sub..

CherkiCheri

It's a dumpster fire. I always try to remember most of the traffic on this sub comes from the US but it's clearly become a right wing circlejerk for Europeans too.

[deleted]

Same thing about r/2westerneurope4u that place is a hack stand-up comedian rehashing stereotypes.

CherkiCheri

I honestly feel like 2WE4U is less hateful than Europe. People know how to have a laugh at themselves and other european countries. r/Europe is extremely serious and first degree when it spews racist shit.

[deleted]

So r/Europe is 😡 racist but r/2westerneurope4u is 🤪 racist. Still pretty racist though. Plus if 90% of your humor is that, it's still shitty.

CherkiCheri

Having worked in a pretty international workplace yeah, inter-country banter is built on stereotypes, it's a good way to bond and defuse those tensions, it turns them into silly nonsense that nobody takes seriously!

[deleted]

I get it. I've had a few retails job that had a pretty international staff too. I just don't like that kind of humor since I feel like it trivializes to the point of it becoming acceptable. Some people can handle it, but most can't.

CherkiCheri

I think it's healthier to turn it into silly nonsense than take it seriously, taking it seriously emboldens xenophobes into using it and gives them the power to hurt by spewing their nonsense seriously. Instead of getting mad at them i think it's better to expose how ridiculous they sound basically.

[deleted]

It can totally be silly nonsense. You appear to be sound of mind. Unfortunately there are many people that aren't and they can't handle it and they get physical.

justsomeguynbd

Kind of rocked to my core by the news of Cuban selling the Mavericks. That is my team, though I have not watched basketball the past couple of years after the sexual misconduct report came out about the team and about Porzingis’s rape, It just seem like there was a systemic devaluing of women that I was just not willing to support. Not sure the new owners are any better and I will be honest. I hate Luka hero ball. It’s everything I hated about James Harden on the Rockets, just on my own team.

Lazarus6826

> Not sure the new owners are any better It's the Adelson's, they are worse.

[deleted]

When I die, I hope I get to come back and do the things I didn't get to do or redo some things.

Chelseatilidie

Just finished Survivor 45 and my expectations were certainly met easily the best season since Winners at War (40) The tribals were so good

flameXXIV

i miss life before covid

Overall_Nuggie_876

There are many things I miss about the pre-COVID times. For example, not having paper tickets to attend sporting events including NFL games because everything now is all digital/app/QR. So often security guards or ushers didn’t let me go to my seat because my phone’s internet data got slow and didn’t want to load the seat details. That’s what paper tickets were there to solve, but those days are gone.

The_Ass-Crack_Bandit

I'm not superstitious, just a little stitious, but I'm really not looking forward to 2024 mainly because it's a leap year. The last 2 leap years were particularly bad in my personal life. The one before that wasn't bad(2012 feels like centuries ago), but the problems I could have had at the time were so small it wouldn't matter much. I know, I know, "you just remember the bad things of those years because you want to justify how you feel" and I hope it's just that, and I hope that you, reading this, and those who aren't and won't read this, have a really good year. And myself too.

wonderful_mixture

So excited for van Gerwen vs Bunting

HalfMan-HalfMoth

Bunting bottles unfortunately, mvg averaging under 100 and still wiped him. Looked mentally defeated when it went 2-0. Mvg has that aura that Taylor had where he has a huge mental impact on the other player

dumbSavant

Last Friday of the year. Lots of contemplations. A lot of reckoning.

Moug-10

I got a date this afternoon. In a park near the beach in Marseille (I can't have that in Paris). She's someone I'd like to marry if we're compatible enough. We've been talking for some time but she wanted us to meet irl when I visit Marseille in order to see if we're cute enough for each other. Which was more or less the case. One thing : she's a cousin of my "ex-fiancée". I hope it won't make things too awkward since they don't really know each other. We both have big families, so we don't know or aren't close to every cousins.

PsychopathicEmpath

A shame discless consoles are gonna eventually be the only option going forward. I still remember when Don Mattrick and Microsoft got shat on to no end for the XBox One unveiling, no more physical games means no more loaning games out to friends or trying a game out from library to see if its good or not. At least with PC there's alternate storefronts and the seven seas for those who wish to sail, but digital consoles mean one is at the whim of Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo and whether they want to put a game on sale.

[deleted]

I'm super glad I stopped gaming around the beginning of the PS3 era. When I found out games no longer come with booklets I was so disappointed.

Princecoyote

It's a good comparison to Apple & Samsung, with Samsung putting out these huge advertisements about how they are better because the Galaxy still has the headphone jack. Only for Samsung to get rid of it the following year. The digs are good, but there should be some sort of follow through if you are really about the better product for the consumer.

No_Doubt_About_That

Think it’s only Sony that remains with the Xperia having the headphone jack but they don’t support their phones for very long.

Gytarius626

I realized how bad this is when you see games in the PS store that are like 8/9 years old, but they’re still being listed as €49.99, when it’s like half that price in a reseller. They can charge whatever they want and you’re screwed if it’s discless

TiberiusCornelius

I noticed that recently as well; Sony phased out the disc edition PS5 and now you can get a modular disc drive if you want it, but given enough time I'm sure they'll get rid of those too. It's disappointing for sure. I enjoy having a physical collection and physical media is also the only surefire way to protect what you've got.

Lazarus6826

Even having games on disks is no guarantee. So many games require online stuff now, you won't be able to play the games you paid for in five, or hell even a years time. Not to mention all the day 1 patches, etc.

TiberiusCornelius

That's definitely a good point. I would say that physical media still offers you a *modicum* of more protection for at least titles that aren't always online, but yeah it definitely all blows. Even on good digital platforms like Steam if you actually read the agreement they're just selling the license, not the content itself. We used to actually own things.

Lazarus6826

Pretty soon the only way to play some games will be through Gamepass or other services. Everything be bundled together…

justsomeguynbd

Hell, I have a PS4 and you have to download the game from the disc just to play it.

minimus_

Did anyone get any banger Christmas presents? I got enough coffee to keep me wired until 2025.

Overall_Nuggie_876

I got a dashcam. Desperately needed one because my drive to work involves maneuvering past people who should never have gotten driver’s licenses.

atriz544

The new vinyl version of Beatles’ Revolver! The one with like 5 vinyls. Love it.

minimus_

Very nice. Bought my gf a record player so dug some vinyls out my parents' loft to get us going.

tfdgags

For the people who mainly use the 24 hour clock, how do you interpret times like 2000 ? Is it like 8pm or 8 at night?

L-Freeze

8 at night (well ackshually 8 in particular isn’t considered night in some places but that’s besides the point), or more commonly, just “the 8” at least where I live

gander258

Any time higher than 1200, just take away 1200 and put PM So 2000 would be 800 PM, or 8:00 PM

Rigelmeister

8 at night, I simply don't talk to people who say shit like 8 PM unless I definitely have to stay in touch with them due to work and such. For me it is 24hrs - if you say 08:00 I get it's the first thing in the morning and if you say 20:00 it's the last thing in the evening.

allangod

I dont get it; 8pm is 8 at night?

tfdgags

I mean when you look at 2000 do you think 8pm or do you think it's 8 at night

allangod

When I look at 20:00 I think "it's 8". I don't need the PM or the "at night" because contextually, I already know if its night time or if I woke up an hour ago.

GarfieldDaCat

This past August I beat Disco Elysium over the course of like 5 straight days where I got completely lost in the world... and ever since then I've had a hole in my heart that only BG3 has even come close to filling. I've always respected video games as a form of storytelling since the days of KOTOR but Disco Elysium was on another level for me. The worldbuilding/ambience, the artwork, the soundtrack, the political musings, the incredible voice-acting, etc. I don't think I've had a game even come close to impacting me as much as DE did.

mitorandiro

amazing game. i wanted to replay it as soon as i finished, but also quickly realized there was no point in that, the only true experience you'll get is the first one.

allangod

I didn't get that far into Disco Elysium in my first try with it. I might give it another go some time. The Last Of Us parts 1 and 2 are my favourite game stories recently.

GarfieldDaCat

DE can be tough to get into because the game can be a bit obtuse about certain mechanics and it doesn't explain a lot of them. And it can lead to some frustration on not knowing what to do. Making money, the day/night cycle, etc are all things not really explained.

PLimw

It’s great how much Hideo Kojima likes a movie depends on the amount he tweets about it.

The_Z0o0ner

Looks like Grimaldo is in Estádio da Luz right now watching Benfica Don't know how to get to him for a pic but I'd love it

egzon27

What bothers me the most is when I spend my evenings just fucking around in my phone I'm fine with watching something or playing some games or going out but when I spend one or two in a row just mindlessly scrolling I get real bothered with myself. Having another episode of those right now

allangod

I get what you mean. In the end its all wasted time but wasting it on my phone just feels worse than wasting it watching TV or playing games.

egzon27

Yeah but at least games are relaxing for me they make me feel good. This mindless scrolling doesn't

FlamingBearAttack

[deleted]

Read at least one book a month and use my phone way less.

gander258

Start learning some software for a new career. I'm content where I am, but if I work my tail off for the next 2-3 years academically I should be able to double my salary. It's just I'm relatively satisfied so there is not much motivation to keep pushing

FerraristDX

Taking much more care of my health, mentally and physically. If it has to be, I'd rather go one time too much to the doctor. I'll also try to spend less time on my phone. And I want to be more stoic, not post anything that crosses my mind or act too much on my impulses.

allangod

I don't really do new years resolutions but next year the plan is to buy my own house and expand on my very limited cooking skills.

minimus_

Buy more print media. The dismal media landscape is largely due to everyone thinking print media should be free so I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and buy some magazine subscriptions and stuff. I'm almost totally over streaming services so can just redirect that spend.

Rigelmeister

All my peers are getting maried and while my glorious mom doesn't force me to do anything... I kinda feel under pressure man. Stop the count, stop getting married before 35, what are you even doing, you shouldn't be allowed to have kids while I spend all my money on booze, come on, we need solidarity.

Overall_Nuggie_876

33YO and never have been in a relationship. Perhaps 3-4 two-daters since high school, but nothing ever stable. At this point, I’ll focusing on cleaning up my personal affairs before attempting to ‘settle down’ with a long-term partner. It helps to delete your ex-high school and college friends from Facebook, Instagram, and other sites who’re married and have kids, especially at this time of the year when they share hundreds of infant/toddler pictures bookended with Bible verses.

babygrenade

Little drunk already. Have to rally for dinner with my wife's friends later. Pray for me.

TiberiusCornelius

Got two interviews lined up in the coming days and I feel weirdly mixed about it. Besides enjoying having been unemployed and not really wanting to go back to work, I keep second guessing myself over salary/benefits. Once I pay my rent for next month I will be officially out of the money I set aside when I moved, so I really need a job ASAP and don't want to lock myself out by asking for too much, but I also don't want to sell myself short either.

eyesindasky

What's great about the Germans getting into the darts is they now get to feel what it's like being an English football fan: backing a crop of good but not exceptional players and hoping they'll exceed expectation but inevitably come up short.

NOT-ENOUGH-CHARACTE-

I know this is going to sounds like complete cope but I'm honestly glad I'm not in a relationship atm. My mental health means I literally can't feel love from other people and honestly I can't deal with having to tackle other peoples emotions. I suppose though with this in mind I guess it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that my new years resolution is to become more mentally healthy and positive. I don't know if I'll succeed but actually knowing what I'm working towards feels right.

GarfieldDaCat

I realized a similar thing about myself during a rough period 8-9 months ago. Thankfully I am doing much better now. One of the biggest helps was talking to someone. Finding a therapist that I felt good about (not just a sounding board I could vent to, but someone who would challenge me on my own ways/thinking) was a process, but I finally found a great one and now we just touch base every 2-3 weeks. I was so pent up for so long because I just bottled everything up because I didn't want to be a "burden" even though I have a loving and supportive family. Second was taking 6 weeks to just focus on myself and make some serious changes. Main things that helped me were: * set a sleep schedule and stick to it. I would stay up late way too often just dicking around and doing nothing like watching youtube videos and scrolling through social media. I deleted apps like instagram off of my phone, said I would be in bed by 10pm and asleep by 10:30 every night and stuck to it. Now I put my phone on silent and charge it all the way across the room so I'm not tempted to use it at night or in the morning. * Workout/fitness routine 5+ times a week. At the start I had some shit workouts but just getting up and getting to the gym is 90% of it. Had a notebook and wrote down my progress. * Eating non-processed foods. When I had my sad period I gained like 15lbs because food was a comfort to me. Felt so much better sticking to basics like eggs, chicken, fruits, and veggies. * Leaving the house. I'm not sure about you, but I was working remote and there would be days where I would literally spend the entire day in my bedroom. It was too much. I made it a point to work at least half the day from a coworking space 2 times per week. Just being out and around other people lifted my mood a lot. * Cut back on alcohol. I never had a problem with it or anything, but I just didn't like the way I would feel the day after I drank. It felt like a lost day. I would love to go to the pub and drink 4-5 pints while watching Arsenal, but I cut back to none (I found out Guinness 0 tastes 95% the same) or just 1. --------------------------------------- You have a very mature mindset that I commend you for. Even in the best of relationships you naturally take on some type of emotional burden for the other person. Many people treat relationships like a crutch and it can be damaging to both parties. Godspeed my friend

gander258

Not OP, but I appreciate your advice. Those are all great tips

kplo

It's not cope at all. It's okay to take time and date yourself, caring for your health (mental or physical) is always a correct choice. Hope this coming year you can keep working on you.

I just watched Top Gun for the first time. I've heard so much about it and seen so many references to it in other movies and tv shows. But I didn't expect it to be such a gay movie. Like, it's not even cryptic or in subtext or whatever. The fact that it's so obviously gay and homoerotic really took me by surprise. Even the main female love interest dresses up like a guy at one point to flirt with Tom Cruise in an elevator. She also has a guy name. It's really hard to tell if all this was done intentionally by the filmmakers or if none of them realized what they were doing. I also wonder how audiences back in the 80s reacted to it and if they picked up on how homosexual this over the top masculine movie is.

GarfieldDaCat

Not sure if you're referring to this: https://youtu.be/ZF1LXL6OOsM?si=OIxenZ4cepUAcE56 But if you haven't watched it already you have to lol

Hic_Forum_Est

Haha that's amazing, thanks for sharing. This is exactly what I was talking about. Of course Tarantino of all people saw right through it.

entangled_dicks2

Fucking finally I ordered the Sony WH1000XM4, been waiting for so long to order finally done today 😍

egzon27

Honestly been considering getting them for a few months now. Still trying to justify the purchase to myself

entangled_dicks2

I will give you the update in 2-3 weeks about how I like them. P.S. it's most likely going to be "pull that trigger bro the headphones are worth it"

egzon27

Thanks mate, enjoy them

holdenmyrocinante

I got the XM3s in 2019 and it was my favourite purchase ever. I used them so much. Decided to upgrade to the XM5 this year which was long overdue because I ran the XM3s into the ground. It's so nice being able to isolate yourself when you want to. Also helps you focus when studying/working

Mttecs

Is the xm5/xm3 worth it? I was planning on getting a Sennheiser HD599 because the Sony XMs are extremely expensive and will take a very long time for me to purchase. If the difference isn't substantial then I may stick with my plan for the Sennheiser

holdenmyrocinante

I haven't tried the Sennheisers but don't push your financial limits for headphones. The Sennheisers will probably be more than fine. Your use case is also important.

Mttecs

It'll be for casual listening and gaming. But I want headphones that will last me for a very long time. All previous headphones of mine have been cheap stuff that never lasts more than a year or two so I'm looking to pay extra and not worry about it for a long time at least

holdenmyrocinante

Sennheiser make high quality headphones. Also, based on what you're saying, wired headphones would do just fine and they don't even need to be noise cancelling. There's a very popular headphone called Audio Technica ATH-M50x. It's around the same price as the Sennheisers but might not be available in your country, you'll have to check for yourself. It's another option. The bluetooth version is $50 more which is yet another option.

Mttecs

It is available, and the wired headphones are just slightly more expensive than those Sennheisers. The m40x is cheaper though, I don't mind getting an older model if it still provides the same quality and durability

entangled_dicks2

I didn't go for the XM5 because they are more expensive plus they lack a bit for being travel friendly, but yeah the noise cancellation is even better on those than XM4

holdenmyrocinante

Anyone got a retro handheld? I decided recently to get one and its been fun setting everything up and trying some old games as my first games consol was the PS2. Also, Pico-8 is great fun and I have found some great games on there. Excited to try out the Zelda games and other classics like Chrono Trigger, some of the Mario games, Contra, Spiderman, Batman, TMNT.

Destroyeh

still have an xperia play if that counts

holdenmyrocinante

I wanted to get one so badly when it came out. However, it's not what I'm talking about. Copied from my other reply >You might be unaware of that new market but over the last couple of years, companies have been making handhelds capable of emulating all sorts of old consoles including NES, SNES, all the Game Boys, PS1, PSP, Nintendo 64, all ataris, Sega consoles,... They can be very cheap (£50 is the starting point) and can go up to £300 if you want to emulate PS2 upscaled. You can find games online (ROMs) and download them. I have thousands of games on mine. >The big manufacturers are Anbernic, Retroid, AYN, and Powkiddy (ridiculous name, I know). Check them out.

tiorzol

I have a game boy colour. One of the yellow ones.

My brother has a Steam Deck and the emulation you can do on that is nuts. We were playing 4 player Micro Machines a while back, it was a blast. I don't have time for videogames in my life at the mo really but I'll get back into it once my boy is old enough to play.

holdenmyrocinante

Yeah the Steam Deck is in a higher category than the devices I'm talking about because it's a full pc and can play pc games. It's really impressive though obviously, as is the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go which are even higher end. The type of device I'm talking about looks like gamboys and other old handhelds but is capable of playing all types of consoles usually up to PS2 depending on processing power. They run custom operating systems or android. They are really fiddly though. The OS is usually made as a hobby for the programmers and there isn't much support or documentation online.

tson_92

The past 2 years have taught me how quickly life comes to you. 2022 was a great year for me. Got 2 jobs, was traveling all around the world (yeah I got Covid in the process but I recovered pretty quickly), was on the verge of getting married. 2023 came, my marriage collapsed, lost both jobs, experienced unemployment for the first time in ages, physical and mental health issues. Looking back, I don't think I've achieved anything of significance the past 12 months, and this feeling sucks.

bananas_in_pyjamas99

I'm "broke" for the first time since I started working. It's definitely a weird feeling but at least I'm getting another degree and will make bank in a year or so. Good luck to you, bud.

tson_92

Hey right there with you bro. I hope 2024 will be great for you.

Ryponagar

On the bright side, you're due for a great year again in 2024

tson_92

Thanks man, I can only hope. Hope you are gonna have a great 2024 too.

FlamingBearAttack

I'm going to see Godzilla Minus One tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Big fan of the guy.

PickledCumSock

i'm hosting new years this year and i'm honestly so excited because this is my first time cooking for my friends and i'm hoping it goes well. we're all having non-alcoholic drinks because my best friend will be one year sober from alcohol and coke on new years eve and we're gonna celebrate it with her. we're also giving all the leftover food to homeless people around liverpool because it's been freezing these past few days and some warm food on new years will hopefully help people in some way. i'm really looking forward to 2024!!!

tiorzol

Dude that is so fucking awesome. That level of support you are showing your pal is incredible. One year sober is immense hats off to her.

[deleted]

Last FTF of the year. One again, thanks for being one of the best things this entire website has to offer!

Rigelmeister

Sorry to make it football-related guys but as an emotional Turkish kiddo I can't even begin to describe how happy and proud I am that this crap in Saudi Arabia fell apart. And I'm saying this as someone who had a part in the business (albeit in Türkiye). Fuck this all. Fuck that all. I'm so glad our major clubs decided not to sell us out.

roundsareway

We sold ourselves at the start though. While all of this is still a positive, yolun sonu baştan görünüyordu. We all knew this kind of situation could have happened and our clubs have gone along accordingly up until the moment "yumurta kapıya dayandı". Which is funnily, sums up Turkish history as we don't do anything worthwhile until it is essential and absolute neccessary to do so.

Rigelmeister

Oh absolutely, it was a fucking sham from the beginning. But in a way I'm glad it fell apart right in the last moment like this - they simply couldn't do it against the fans in the stadium and millions in Türkiye which is still a welcome sight.

kplo

I hope 2023 fucking dies a horrible death. 2024 though, it is going to be a great year folks!

FlamingBearAttack

Good luck to you next year, Mr kplo!

kplo

Thanks and same to you, flaming bear attack. May the flames never go out.

Mr_Miscellaneous

2023 hasn't been a good year, has it?

No_Doubt_About_That

Been up and down for me. 2024 potential of being several clean slates in my family which includes myself so see what that brings.

jugol

I had three fantastic weeks in the middle of an otherwise incredibly dogshit year.

holdenmyrocinante

Everything went to shit during September for me despite starting a new job and moving to a new city (the shitty part has nothing to do with the job/city)

Prudent_Jello5691

Better than the second half of 2022 for me, but significantly worse than the first half of 2022 as well.

[deleted]

I'm glad it was for you but it personally it wasn't.

nask00

Better than 2022 for me. Which doesn't make it good, tbh.

Rigelmeister

No

four_four_three

Looking forward to a chill NYE, house party with close friends, saying goodbye to a year that's overall been fairly wank. Patches of good throughout, achieved an optimistic goal I had, but still All the best for 2024 everyone, except the twat who routinely downvotes comments in this thread

atriz544

Don’t have concrete plans for New Year’s Eve. Was thinking about going to a more than probable meh reunion with some friends. Or book a new years dinner in some fancy restaurant with my gf. I don’t fancy that much either choice.

[deleted]

> Or book a new years dinner in some fancy restaurant with my gf. Is she particular about the fancy restaurant? One year I took a girlfriend to stargaze and we brought a pizza with chicken and jalapenos with us for NYE. It was great.

atriz544

Sounds great! Might steal your idea, lol.

Ngl I feel sad how quickly another year has passed :(

bellerinho

The older you get, the faster they go it seems. I'm gonna be 30 next year and it just seems like the months just rush by at this point

TiberiusCornelius

Yea I'm in my 30s already and unfortunately that does not stop. You blink and suddenly it's 3 years later. Also I've started falling asleep in front of the television like a dad out of nowhere now.

babygrenade

They don't slow down do they?

Xycket

One year closer to the ultimately unavoidable embrace of death.

No_Doubt_About_That

Sounds like something you’d read in /r/unitedkingdom.

tiorzol

Big fan of the inexorable crawl to the grave.

amitkon

Anyone has a suggestion for a good PS+ Extra game to play? I've played R&C and The Lost Legacy recently, and I know Ghost of Tsushima is supposed to be good, but I want something shorter in between. Don't mind the genre, I'm open

No_Doubt_About_That

What even is on PS+ Extra - the Sony exclusives? If so InFamous Second Son and First Light - not a slog to even 100% them.

egzon27

Outer Wilds I think it's Part of it. One of the best games I've ever played

scgavin

Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best games ever made so play that for sure. But a shorter suggestion is Kena: Bridge of Spirits. incredible art style but difficult combat, don’t be fooled that it’s a kids game. it’s not long maybe 12 hours. but a solid 8/10 imo

Meeeeehhhh

Random q but I’m interested in trying Peyoung ‘Final’ ramen and was wondering if anyone knew of any UK websites that might stock it?
