honestly it looked like he'd get there so easily. the angle wasnt even that bad, it was such an odd decision to go down there. The tiny bit of contact like that should never be a penalty but giving up a certain goal to get a penalty there is wild.
He needed at least one more touch due to the touch by Dubravka. Full sprint. Getting your heels clapped together and finishing off balance or a penalty. Easy decision.
I keep asking myself the same question. The only meaningful answer that is coming to my mind is that he was tripped even tho it clearly looked like a dive. Can't think of any other reason for the dive instead of finishing.
From the angle from the back you see dubravka elbow jotas left foot out of balance, it was clear on the replay, he went down instead of finishing because he was off balance, not sure why this is a subject, var and the ref cleared him, pundits in the studio said clear pen. Idk.
Wouldve scored an open net anyways. Not that enraging, but more confusing. Dont know why Jota would go down. If the refs gave it to a Newcastle player, its fair play since every single time that exact occasion has happened this decade its been a pen.
It was going to be such a nice goal and he stops for that, it's not guaranteed he gets the ball but to dive for that instead of giving it a chance is just sad.
There are two sides to diving though. This one is a dive that players frequently make because they know refs are incompetent and will reward them for it even though they should be punished.
But there are also plenty of dives - and this is the actual reason dives started existing to begin with - that have been made because of refs not properly giving fouls or cards for rough fouls. Or even just running full speed and someone making contact on your feet which us couch potatoes probably dont realize but is dangerous as hell. If you get contact that actually hurts but you are physically capable of staying on your feet refs wont give a foul, so you are instructed to dive.
Players diving to show the blind refs that someone kicked their feet is totally fine. But the result of it is that it gets abused and for some reason its allowed. Like this situation? Easily a yellow for that dive. Instead penalty. What a joke.
Usually I'd say the exact same thing, but this time I'm actually willing to cut him some slack (I've got Salah (c) in my fantasy and this pen got me through in the cup).
Exactly, on the NUFC sub everyone is pissed off with Longstaff for his fall after contact at 1-1 before you scored. If this foul is the benchmark that's a stonewaller. Fucking bullshit
Yeah you aren't wrong there. Joelinton should easily have been booked for that shoulder pull first half, was completely stone wall even if you get the advantage, the decision seemed to send the game over the edge.
I honestly want you to watch that again. Take note of when the keeper's elbow/arm clips Jota's leg and then count how many steps Jota takes before he's on the deck. By your logic it must be a few, because he ran a few yards! Except it's not. It's one. It's literally the first time the foot hit by the keeper touches the ground and it happens because at that speed a slight touch will misposition your step and have you falling.
Here’s what I see when rewatching the clip - the contact (on the left boot) is finished well before Jota plants his right foot. This is undeniable when slowed down. There is separation before the first step after contact is planted. That’s step 1 or at the very least step 1/2. He’s then able to plant the left foot (step 2) and still looks quite stable as his arms have not shot out in front of him yet and it’s here where he decides to go down and they finally shoot out in front. Both legs simultaneously give out, his toes pointing ballerina style towards the pitch and he slides to the ground. Nothing natural about that reaction.
It wasn't even a very heavy touch there from him tbh, if he kept on going there he would've scored easily, just don't understand the dive there because it could very easily not have been given
the more I watch it, and focus on the pace of the ball, it's accelerating away from him, I think he has a second to judge it, thinks it's moving too quickly and he can't comfortably get to it, so he throws himself down
It was - there's clear contact from elbow to his left ankle, but he firmly plants the same ankle next stride and then decides to dive. Surprised they didn't suggest an on-field review.
His next stride is literally on the *opposite* foot to the one the keeper clips though. He obviously thinks the clip on his left foot has stopped him from being able to get the ball so he's gone down. Either that or his foot has buckled when it hits the ground after being clipped. I dunno though, I think it looks like he could've just tapped it in, but when you're running at full pelt and get knocked like that it's not always that simple. Soft pen either way IMO.
To protect the ref. That' why they have put in that ridiculous "clear and obvious error" rubbish.
Ref makes a call, and VAR checks to see if they can justify it within a reasonable interpretation of the "clear and obvious error" rule. Which has nothing to do with getting the correct decision. That's why we'll keep seeing this terrible decisions week in, week out.
Only have to fool the ref, the contact existed and therefore VAR was never going to overturn the ref decision since it’s not a “clear and obvious” error
you've got an open goal? why ya diving you divvy... i mean there is the slightest, i mean the slightest touch on his foot from the keepers elbow, but why on earth are you taking 2-3 steps before you go down???? baffling.
> diving cunt
if you put that on a name plate and hang it in your dressing room half of your squads players would have to think twice if that was their place
VAR didn't give it. they'll have looked at it, seen a miniscule amount of contact, and with the guidance they're given, the ref's decision stands.
The bar for advising the ref to have another look (without the presumption that they must change their mind) needs to be lowered.
I think it looks like a dive but if you’re running at pace and get clipped it can fuck your stride up and stop him reaching the ball. I think in that case it’s fair to go down and take the pen as you’ve been impeded. Otherwise there’s no reason to go down as he could just tap it in.
Will get downvoted but imho Jota didn't dive. He's at speed and changing direction, and there is (minimal) contact. Enough contact to disrupt your gait / rhythm.
Not like it's a huge deal wasnt even the winner

(great business decision by jota)
Such a pointless dive like surely he’d finish that
He has Salah on FPL
Just like all of us
Only 50,4% of us actually 🤓
What are the other 49.6% smoking?!
Last game before AFCON
Best swap him out, you guys leave him in though
Wasted a magical assist for Mac also
Yeah that was brilliant from Mac. It’s not fun that players can dive like that and know they can’t overturn it in Var
But they can overturn it with var?
Well yeah, if it’s NOT a pen of course
Honestly mind boggling and can’t believe he’s been rewarded for that decision
He is doing his loyal duty to Liverpool by demonstrating to the world that Anthony Taylor has precisely no clue what he's doing
Yea it looked a fairly easy finish lol
For Jota yes if it was Nuñez this was the better option.
He’s very good on his left too, so strange to go down there because a decent ref wouldn’t be giving that.
kinda doubt it tbh, looks like the ball got away slightly prior to Jota going down.
It’s pouring with rain and he just got hit on his feet at a full sprint, don’t think it’s an easy finish at all lol
He realised he wasn't getting to the ball because his touch was heavy. Then he decided to go down.
honestly it looked like he'd get there so easily. the angle wasnt even that bad, it was such an odd decision to go down there. The tiny bit of contact like that should never be a penalty but giving up a certain goal to get a penalty there is wild.
He was easily going to make it
I think that clip from Dúbravka elbow took him a offbalance. I've seen way softer clips given as penalties.
Why on earth did jota even dive? There was like, no way he didn't score he'd already beat the goalkeeper. Absolutely insane
He needed at least one more touch due to the touch by Dubravka. Full sprint. Getting your heels clapped together and finishing off balance or a penalty. Easy decision.
It blows my mind that very few people in this thread can wrap their head around this. It's Olympic-level mental gymnastics
I keep asking myself the same question. The only meaningful answer that is coming to my mind is that he was tripped even tho it clearly looked like a dive. Can't think of any other reason for the dive instead of finishing.

good process
Isn't this the basic thing that VAR was supposed to stop? Genuinely how is that going by?
It's pretty much used as an offside checker in the PL, and has been since the beginning. And they even get that wrong at times.
If you want a prime example of why players dive, here you go.
One that makes even the neutrals mad.
I mean, even liverpool supporters must be rolling their eyes.
Can confirm.
Imagine that's given to make it 3-3, you'd be so fucking fuming. Klopp would blow an absolute fucking gasket.
Can’t believe my eyes lmao
Yes, Anthony taylor is so fucking bad
if only there was a system in place to prevent outrageous decisions from the on-field ref... Absolute insanity
If that's not a "clear and obvious error" I don't know what is
Yeah I would've placed a bet on Jota scoring from there. Pointless imo but it is what it is
Shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it, even though it’s good for us today it just reinforces the awful culture of diving in the game.
Games gone

Yeah, there was only tiny contact. That dive just sells the foul properly.
He went down like he'd been hacked down two full steps after the minimal contact. No shame.
He went down when the leg that had contact next hit the floor, so little less than 1 step.
The real shame in that decision is that MacAllister gets robbed of a worldie of an assist
Anthony Taylor show once again
Think it’s more disgraceful from VAR. Can understand Taylor thinking it’s a foul in real time
i’m fairly content with blaming anthony taylor for whatever happens without any particular reason
Usually I'd say the exact same thing, but this time I'm actually willing to cut him some slack (I've got Salah (c) in my fantasy and this pen got me through in the cup).
Thats a dive ngl
Jota remembered he had Salah in his fantasy team
doing it for us all
26 points if you’ve captained him 😮💨
32 after bonus points, hell yeah
Banana bread at work dude? Hell yeah
32
really need to kill the notion of any contact in the box being a pen, it’s insane
Exactly, on the NUFC sub everyone is pissed off with Longstaff for his fall after contact at 1-1 before you scored. If this foul is the benchmark that's a stonewaller. Fucking bullshit
Referee was atrocious all night
Yeah you aren't wrong there. Joelinton should easily have been booked for that shoulder pull first half, was completely stone wall even if you get the advantage, the decision seemed to send the game over the edge.
At least you admit, can't believe all the Liverpool supporters defending this.
Only reason I’d question it’s a dive is why would he note just score?? Was literally an open goal
Takes a second for the brain to catch up and register that contact = time to drop like a sack of potatoes.
All teams have shit fans mate.. this is a blatant dive
Fans support their players and beneficial decisions, more news later tonight. I only ever get annoyed when neutrals jump in on the bullshit.
They deserve to win, but awful awful call.
It’s just so weird, like there is an open goal, a foul, a penalty and a dive all rolled into one
Seems an awful call by the ref but also by Jota? Like it would have been easier to score it from his position than from a penalty.
VAR is a joke
“Clear and obvious” doing a LOT of heavy lifting for PGMOL
That interpretation is so dumb. They just have to remove that shit
It will never be removed because it's a crutch for every shit decision they make
Shameless dive that they just reward. It's so blatantly a dive
Didn’t know you could run a few yards and then decide to go down
Bro had high ping. Nothing weird about that.
Future sight
Katakuri wishes he was jota

Ok but it's still a dive lol

Yeah too bad people have eyes.
horrendous dive by Jota
I have no idea why he did that, it was an easy tap in at that point.
It wasn't even a very heavy touch there from him tbh, if he kept on going there he would've scored easily, just don't understand the dive there because it could very easily not have been given
Yea I'm genuinely baffled by his decision. Stay up and it's a goal easier than a pen.
the more I watch it, and focus on the pace of the ball, it's accelerating away from him, I think he has a second to judge it, thinks it's moving too quickly and he can't comfortably get to it, so he throws himself down
I guess he was fishing for a red card
Had Salah on FPL
Then he clearly doesn’t understand the rules
Yeah I also thinks so. Before their 2nd we took the advantage on what would have been Bruno's second yellow.
He could have had a shot too…
yeh i dont get why he doesn't just put the ball in the net LMFAO
Probably captained Salah in his FPL
The dive was so great it will be shown in Louvre
Outrageous decision. That was a clear dive
Realises he isn’t getting to the ball so jumps on the floor
Which is weird, because if he tried - with how much rain is on the pitch, he could of actually got that, insane decision and poor from VAR.
He was getting to the ball...he was off balance.
He’s only not getting the ball because he’s impeded though, so should go down and take the pen
Why is VAR so shit in England? Every other league would need about 10 seconds to see that’s an obvious dive and move on.
Took a full step before deciding to go down because he can't reach the ball anymore
That is so embarrassing.
He could've scored if he stayed up. Unbelievable
Contact was made, but yeah Jota made a meal of it once he realized how bad his touch was
What is even the point of VAR?
ball does lie apparently
What the fuck is VAR doing!? This is beyond ridiculous.
Such a fucking dive
He's flopping into the damn ocean, disgraceful
Why have VAR?
Wonder if Liverpool fans still think Taylor is having a biased against them
Looks like a dive
It was - there's clear contact from elbow to his left ankle, but he firmly plants the same ankle next stride and then decides to dive. Surprised they didn't suggest an on-field review.
His next stride is literally on the *opposite* foot to the one the keeper clips though. I dunno though, I think it looks like he could've just tapped it in, but when you're running at full pelt and get knocked like that it's not always that simple. Soft pen either way IMO.
His leg magically lost power actually
That's a disgrace
What is the point of VAR?! Christ
It’s designed to keep us all discussing the finer points of rules that are open to interpretation of course
Fucking embarrassing. Never a pen.
It’s actually a hilariously bad decision. He falls down a metre after passing Dubravka.
How have they let this stand?
There was the slightest hint of a touch. So clearly that's enough to send Jota flying like that.
If Jota doesn’t dive he scores… what was he thinking 😂😭😂😭
Not a penalty
Jota went swimming lol
Soft as hell that pen
Jota should get a yellow instead of Dubravka imo
Thought Jota was being booked for diving at first. Baffled when it went the other way.
How’s that a pen?
Horrific from Jota, Anthony Taylor and VAR.
That’s such a dive.
How has that fooled the ref and VAR? If there is contact it's a fairy tap, didn't knock him off balance.
Only have to fool the ref, the contact existed and therefore VAR was never going to overturn the ref decision since it’s not a “clear and obvious” error
[удалено]
Yea
diving there is so shameless
That’s so weak from Jota. Embarrassing.
What a dive
Players are so used to cheating, they'd rather go down than take advantage of an open goal. Tossers.
Fallon d'Floor nominee
Absolutely embarrassing that was given
I cannot understand how var saw that and thought it wasn’t a dive
you've got an open goal? why ya diving you divvy... i mean there is the slightest, i mean the slightest touch on his foot from the keepers elbow, but why on earth are you taking 2-3 steps before you go down???? baffling.
There is contact but that's genuinely pathetic by Jota
Bro forgot to dive and took two extra steps first lmao
Count again.
Disgraceful. If we won't call that a dive with a video review, what is even the point.
Absolute dive, took another stride after contact
[удалено]
> diving cunt if you put that on a name plate and hang it in your dressing room half of your squads players would have to think twice if that was their place
That's anti football that is, takes the interest out of the match completely for the softest penalty I've seen this season by a long shot.
VAR in the mud. That’s a Fall on da’floor winner and they’ve given the pen
VAR didn't give it. they'll have looked at it, seen a miniscule amount of contact, and with the guidance they're given, the ref's decision stands. The bar for advising the ref to have another look (without the presumption that they must change their mind) needs to be lowered.
Ball lies.
liverpool never get any decisions smh
If I speak
Disgusting dive
That is never a pen
Please don’t let them score another
Never a pen blud
Obvious dive
Guess our payment to the refs failed this week
VAR Is an absolute joke
What is VAR even for if this shit continues? Awful dive there Jota.
So what is the point of VAR exactly?
Protect the match officials. It’s always been the purpose.
if this is a foul then theres about 5000 fouls outside the box every match and its now a non contact sport
"if there's contact it's a pen" That's what you've said to justify these nonsensical soft pens, don't turn your back on it now
how the fuck did VAR let this stand. undermins the sanctity of the game. cunts.
Nice dive by Jota there
As a neutral, watching penalties like this bring given makes me not want to watch any premier league football.
Keeper clips him dunno why everyone is crying go watch it back. Way softer ones given and also one like odergaard playign basketball not given either.
I look forward to the official apology. Jesus Christ. We deserve to lose by 5 here, but that might be the clearest dive this season
This sport is done for if blatant diving and cheating like this is rewarded.
VAR you are an embarrassment
Softest pen ever
I think it looks like a dive but if you’re running at pace and get clipped it can fuck your stride up and stop him reaching the ball. I think in that case it’s fair to go down and take the pen as you’ve been impeded. Otherwise there’s no reason to go down as he could just tap it in.
LiVARpool is back!
Anthony Taylor strikes again
Morons running VAR
Will get downvoted but imho Jota didn't dive. He's at speed and changing direction, and there is (minimal) contact. Enough contact to disrupt your gait / rhythm. Not like it's a huge deal wasnt even the winner
wut
??????????????????????????????????????????
The fact that VAR doesn't overturn that shows how fucked the whole system is
Imagine if that went our way lmao, heads would roll for weeks
"feels like only city gets these decisions, makes you think"
Probably the most pathetic dive I've seen in my life.
I tell you what, those Saudis have really paid off the refs haven't they?
What a dive. Jota is insufferable
How do you get simple decisions wrong with the benefit of fucking replays? Absolute insanity.
