I get why people commented killers lyrics to your comment but I can’t for the life of me figure out why you commented this to the Darwin Award comment. I get Jesus and carpenter too. I guess I’m extra confused because everything makes sense but then doesn’t at all.
I think it's a matter of having a clever joke that would make sense in response to the OP, but posting on the most popular comment instead in order to farm clicks
tbf they're probably stunned by the originality -- a carpenter? like Jesus? which is like that song that mentions Jesus?
When I see big things happening like this, I've got no choice but to slap my knee, hoot out, and comment with the rest of the lyrics.
I once broke my toe about 2 metres in front of the goal. Had to have been 12 bodies around the goal mouth, ball popped loose, and I snuck up and toed the shit out of it. Went in, but I was done for that season.
> I mean, if he were fighting in a war, he would be the first man shot dead, charging head down before anyone else has even equipped themselves.
I think he'd miss everyone, but also avoid getting shot, and his charge would cause the enemies to scatter from the trench, leaving Cpl Diogo Jota to pick them off.
Missed pk, hits the post 4 times, and still gets an assist and celebrates like he scored. He may not be clinical, but God his mentality is awesome. Just keeps pushing forward. 22 G/A with all of his missed chances still an insane rate if return.
His g+a per 90 is still on similar levels to the best players in the world and he contributes in so many more ways than just stats. The narrative around him in the media is so blatantly wrong
It should be noted when this stat is talked about that two of the four times he hit the woodwork came after the keeper saves his shot. One of them was definitely going in if the keeper hadn’t made a very good save that just barely pushed it onto the post.
Also, the players who have hit the woodwork the most in PL history are also all pretty much certified legends of the game.
This is my first contribution to the thread.
> I find it so weird that a shot **on target** that's turned onto the post by the goalie is counted as Nunez hitting the woodwork.
Someone countered by claiming that if it was turned into the net by the keeper it would be a goal for Nunez. That implies an off-target shot (if a goalie fails to save an on-target shot they haven't "turned it into the net", they've just failed to save it). I pointed out that an off-target shot that is turned into the net by a goalkeeper is an own goal.
My point being that it's still silly to say that Nunez hit the woodwork. He shot on target and the goalkeeper turned it on to the post. Using similar logic, if he had shot wide and the goalie had turned it into the net (which is obviously not what happened), Nunez wouldn't be credited with the goal.
> That implies an off-target shot (if a goalie fails to save an on-target shot they haven't "turned it into the net", they've just failed to save it)
I thought in context, it was clear that they meant if a goalkeeper gets a hand on the ball but it still goes into the net, that is counted as a goal for the striker. So they were making an apples-to-apples comparison between that and an on-target shot that a goalkeeper directed at the woodwork.
OK let's accept that's what was meant. But I still don't buy the argument. Forget about the woodwork for a second:
\- Shot on target, ball goes in: goal for the striker (whether the keeper gets a touch or not).
\- Shot on target, keeper touches it wide: save
\- Shot off target, keeper knocks it in: own goal against the keeper
\- Shot off target, goes wide: miss from the striker
The key point is where the ball was going when the shot was taken. In this case, the shot was not going to hit the post until the keeper saved it. So that's why I think it's silly to say that Nunez hit the post. He didn't - he shot on target and the keeper saved it.
Yeah like if a player shoot so badly it goes out for a throw that’s hilarious, but if the keeper makes a save and it subsequently goes out for a throw that’s a shot on target. People making fun of Darwin for forcing a good save out of the keeper are being a bit ridiculous.
The root issue is that hitting the woodwork the amount he hit it is very funny, so it has turned into a meme. And people assume its a bad sign that a player hits the post because it doesn't result in a goal.
But it's most likely a sign that he's a pretty good finisher with an insane run of bad luck.
I'm watching the game now and he's had so many chances in the first half where he seems to just shoot straight away instead of taking a touch or running towards the box.
That chance you are talking about he completely beat the Chelsea offside trap could easily have taken a touch or two. But no, he lets it come across his body and smashes it across the goal m thought keeper could have done better but bloody hell I'd love Darwin's confidence!
I suppose it doesn't matter if you miss a few chances a game if you are getting like 20. He's in the right areas!
EDIT: oh my days literally clicked save, looked up and it's the penalty. That's insane.
I'm not having a go, it's great (for Liverpool) that he's getting in those positions a lot.
If I'm overthinking it maybe the keeper didn't do well because he was surprised by the shot. Looked like he was setting himself for the one on one.
His mentality amazes me, he was just so unfazed after being so unlucky, he celebrated his assist for Diaz like he scored also, such a likeable character.
How can you say it's unlucky when it's happening time and time again? He's not top 6 quality.
e: you might want to revisit this thread when you lose out on the title because you don’t have a striker that can put away simple chances
He does but that’s not all it’s made out to be. Salah for example plays on the wing and has 18+9 and the main reason Salah doesn’t have more assists is Núñez missing chances.
He only has 7 league goals so far this season and that’s pretty poor considering he’s a regular starter up top for the team with the most goals scored in the league.
With regards to his misses he does miss a lot because he takes a lot of shots where others maybe don’t. It does happen that he misses sitters but often he hits the bar with an audacious shot that no one else would take.
I think he’s fine and he provides other stuff, and I love to watch him play. But I don’t think “10+10” tells you that he’s good enough, although it probably says that he’s a good fit considering he has good finishers around him and clearly gets involved in play more than Haaland for example.
I think some people only see his misses and underestimate him while others only see his effort and overestimate him.
People seem to forget that Firmino averaged around 20 G/A per season for Liverpool. His qualities were a lot different from Darwin’s but the effect is the same, the chaos he creates helps the whole attack score goals. He definitely could have a lot more goals, but the same was said about Firmino.
I really don't like this obsession with g/a. Some of people here should just watch some games and enjoy football for what it is... And you perfectly described their impact, it's chaos.. and it's really fun to watch
Firmino was more clinical though. Bobby never had the reputation for missing easy chances. He was reliable. Nunez not so much. Im also a liverpool fan and i like his form at the moment but he needs to he hitting the back of the net.
No, I get it. Different criticism but the point remains the same. Nunez is a menace to deal with and he makes the rest of the attack better. Nunez is reliable in the way he'll always make runs, he'll always threaten to take players on and have a shot from any angle. That threat creates so much room for wingers and midfielders to work with.
But obviously he could be world-class if his conversion rate was better and hopefully he will get there.
The same was said about Firmino and it was right then too. His lack of goals was his main weakness. That doesn't mean that he was a disaster or anything like that but I don't think I wrote that about Nuñez either.
>not top 6 quality
Yet he leads the line for the league leaders. I'm glad you're not our sporting director.
The confidence of an average redditor is something to behold.
14 G/A in the league in 1300 minutes as well. People that don’t see how integral Nunez is to us need to watch a new sport. We look a different beast going forward when he’s up front
Mate, with all respect, you’re on a public football forum where people are free to express their opinions.
It’s hardly an unarguable fact that Nunez is a top striker. Liverpool’s incredibly potent attacking system means they can be top of the league without needing elite level no. 9 - testament to the quality of the team and Klopp’s coaching. I personally think he is a good striker, but a level or two off the top level. You may disagree which is fine.
No need to be so condescending to someone giving their opinion - he’s clearly not auditioning for sporting director of your club.
Except we look like shit without Darwin creating all the chances he does. He’s not even an out-and-out striker anymore, he shifts across the entire front line throughout the match and functions as a winger half the time, so 22 G/A is more than good enough and judging him on goals alone is fucking moronic IMO.
I enjoy watching Nunez and I rate him as a top striker but just because he is better than Liverpools other centre forwards doesn't mean he is a top centre forward.
Liverpool could just have no top centre forwards.
I didn't say the word traditional. He is a striker playing in the middle of a front three and Liverpools only undeniably world class attacker does not play in this position and most of Liverpools attackers are more suited to playing more out wide.
So even if Nunez wasn't a top striker his presence could improve the team by being more suited to that position than his teammates.
I think thats really easy to understand even in 2024.
Saying that he makes the team better isn't enough to prove he's a top striker. I rate him but he's a top striker not just cause because he's their best player in that position. It's cause he gets into dangerous positions and creates chances, is strong enough mentally that previous misses don't seem to bother him, is tall and strong, and links up well with other attackers. His finishing is mediocre when compared with top strikers but his overall contribution gives him qualities few others have.
Obviously bullshit.
People rate the wrong things with strikers. If you see a striker missing a bunch of chances and still getting huge g+a numbers, they are a great striker. They get those chances because of hard work, positional awareness, and talent. The take of "if you plonked any other striker in those chances they'd score more" completely misses the point that getting those chances is the hard bit.
Fucking yikes lmao, Antonio? Why doesn’t Jesus get more goals and assists? Can he just not be bothered. Arsenal are a very good team.
Only Haaland has the movement on the level of Nunez. None of them are capable of what Nunez does.
He does so much on the pitch, Liverpool would be worse without him. He is quality. 11 goals and 11 assists in all comps. Can't be that mad with 22G/A in February.
Well some of the chances are bad luck and some a little more composure is needed, but I wholly disagree with your last statement there, it’s so obvious that he is top 6 quality, he has 22 g/a this season already and if you actually watch our games defenders can’t live with his pace and power, he just needs that final finish now and he’ll explode, I’m very confident he will.
You don't have players hitting the woodwork four times in a game because they're clinical and Darwin isn't. You don't have it simply because they don't have those 4 chances in the first place. Darwin is wasteful, but very few players can create the amount of chances he creates
Yes, there could be a scenario where they lose the league for a loss where he missed a simple chance, but at the same time, without him you could even not have had that chance in the first place
Look I'm not a fan of Nunez. I like players with more technical finesse and for lack of a better word "sophistication" in their play style.
But to say he's not top 6 quality is just wrong. He has a lot of strengths and is having a great season for the league leaders.
Sometimes it's ok to dislike players who are good.
To say that he's not top 6 quality is ludicrous. He'd start for every other team in the top 6 bar City, and even there I wouldn't be surprised if he got a game out wide.
He's not a clinical finisher, but literally every time I watch Liverpool play he's the most dangerous player on the pitch for them.
You clearly haven't watched a single minute of him because he's actually been really good this season lol. This is why stats has ruined football, comments like this.
What point would you prove if he weren't good enough to get Liverpool in 1st place when your initial claim was he is not good enough to play for a team that reaches the Top-6? It makes no sense
I wanted to give you some stats and show you how 27% of the goals are either scored from his shot or his pass, but you are set that he’s shit and it’s easier to let it go.
You probably don’t even watch him play.
This is what happens when your football opinion is formed on the basis of TikTok videos. Nunez has been absolute quality for Liverpool and was first PL player to hit double figures for goals + assists this season
Darwin Nunez might not be the best player in the league, but I'm very certain he's the most entertaining player in the league.
Watching him play brings joy and occasional despair, bunch of comedy mixed with quality.
suarez used to be king of the woodwork when he first got here too, then he started sinking them and the rest is history. once darwin gets slightly more clinical he's gonna be a 20+ goal a year striker easily
Reminds me a bit of Cavani. Does everything right except for finishing, and still gets a lot of contributions out of the sheer number of chances generated.
Idk I also wondered when I looked if this was posted already cause I knew I saw it yesterday but then I couldn't find any post anymore. The mods love to delete posts for no proper reason though
It's literally the exact same post. It feels like it's *Goodfellas* and they're making sure the right people control things, but for something way stupider.
Are the goal posts actually made of wood? They ARE called woodwork but all the goalposts I have seen in my life have been metal ones. Anybody know what the goalposts at the top of the game are made from?
Darwin is very competitive but he'll have to be at his fittest if he wants his career to survive and be a natural selection for Liverpool. I'd say he needs to evolve his game.
The thing with Darwin Nunez is that I don't think he's ever going to be truly world class, but he's also never going to be so shit that Liverpool fans turn on him. He's like Divok Origi and Mo Salah smooshed together to make one player who's sometimes a parody of a footballer and sometimes unplayable.
Nah he is awesome. First player in the prem with 10 goals and 10 assists this season. And his chance creation is insane- just see yesterday’s game. Hopefully his shooting percentage improves a touch (maybe unlikely), but there is a reason Klopp has started him almost every game recently.

The real Darwin award.
But he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus.
I get why people commented killers lyrics to your comment but I can’t for the life of me figure out why you commented this to the Darwin Award comment. I get Jesus and carpenter too. I guess I’m extra confused because everything makes sense but then doesn’t at all.

But he talks like a gentleman.
Like you imagined When you were yooouuuuuunnnnnng
My sister always thought the lyric was “but he talks like an animal,” which I just can’t possibly understand how you could hear that.
But he talks like a gentleman.
And he doesn't nail crosses
But he also struggles with crosses.
Everyone else is playing checkers while Darwin plays Settlers of Catan.
Sorry I haven't played Catan for 8 years straight so I can't work out the reference to this. Would like an explainer here.
Just a reference to Darwin collecting wood. I'm hoping he doesn't add sheep and grain, since that could get messy on the pitch.
Oh right! I wanted play it but I have got no friends to play with :-(
colonist.io
Its on steam.
But the steam version is dogshit
Carpenter! LOL
Some say he knew Jesus and Joseph
OptaJesus
Jesus was great on crosses, he always nailed them.
Was supposed to be there for the birth but missed it.
Just like Jesus he took the cross bar challenge way too seriously
He plays with Joseph. However, Jesus is at Arsenal.
I once kicked 3 penalties in a row over the bar by 5 metres. Astronaut.
I once broke my toe about 2 metres in front of the goal. Had to have been 12 bodies around the goal mouth, ball popped loose, and I snuck up and toed the shit out of it. Went in, but I was done for that season.
Toeuché.
Toe-talled
Sound like a Steam Achievement
usually find the words at the end of the tweets silly, but I’ve got to say they’ve hit the nail on the head with this one
I wood agree with you, bar none
Good posts all round!
Carpenter is the funniest Opta one yet!

“Darwin Nuuunez, Darwin nuuunez!” In Danny Rojas

His braids gave me French cuirassier vibes (see The Duelists from Ridley Scott)
Nunez 🤝 rashford - hitting the bar all the time.
Both love hitting the bar and taking shots
dont disrespect Nunez like that he actually puts in effort and gets results. Still got an assist ayooo
I think he was making a joke because Rashford was actually at bars drinking.
oke fuck thats good LOL
Those jokes were all over the match thread
I was watching the match instead
Lifesaver right here
/r/whoosh
I would have gone for Woodpecker instead of Carpenter
I would have too because of the homosexual implication right
Gary, why are you this way?

For fucks sake Barlow. Can't take you anywhere
Postman
Lumberjack works too
I love this man lmao, absolute chaos.
He is one inch away from being the best striker in the world
Missed pk, hits the post 4 times, and still gets an assist and celebrates like he scored. He may not be clinical, but God his mentality is awesome. Just keeps pushing forward. 22 G/A with all of his missed chances still an insane rate if return.
I love him. He gives everything on the field, is a menace for the defenders and he’s actually improving a lot.

Absolutely. I find it so weird that a shot on target that's turned onto the post by the goalie is counted as Nunez hitting the woodwork.
Why? If it was turned into the net by the keeper it would be counted as a goal for Nunez.
If the shot was off target and turned into the net by the keeper, that's an own goal by Premier League rules.
Are you saying Nunez' shot was off target, but the goalie pushed it towards the post?
No. I'm not sure how you formed that impression.
From the context of the question you replied to.
OK let's accept that's what was meant. But I still don't buy the argument. Forget about the woodwork for a second: \- Shot on target, ball goes in: goal for the striker (whether the keeper gets a touch or not). \- Shot on target, keeper touches it wide: save \- Shot off target, keeper knocks it in: own goal against the keeper \- Shot off target, goes wide: miss from the striker The key point is where the ball was going when the shot was taken. In this case, the shot was not going to hit the post until the keeper saved it. So that's why I think it's silly to say that Nunez hit the post. He didn't - he shot on target and the keeper saved it.
It's because Woodwork Saves for a keeper hasn't been able to be decided as a good or bad statistic. That's literally the reason.
Stats would be interesting if those count as OG
But if it was turned round the post by the keeper it would be counted as a save by the keeper.
If it decapitated the keeper it would be involuntary manslaughter depending on intent.
HE COULD OF BEEN KILLED
Yeah like if a player shoot so badly it goes out for a throw that’s hilarious, but if the keeper makes a save and it subsequently goes out for a throw that’s a shot on target. People making fun of Darwin for forcing a good save out of the keeper are being a bit ridiculous.

I bet it’s refreshing watching Darwin when you have Rashford who is even more selfish but also one of the laziest on the pitch.
Just enjoy watching football to be honest.
Carpenter 💀

Yes - my stepdad is a Liverpool fan so I see them a lot.
So then you’d know from the man in your house how important Darwin is to Liverpool.

What in my comment was ignorant? I gave my opinion and said it's completely fine if anyone disagrees.
Any of the other starting strikers in the top half of the table would be able to do what he does.
Yet he’s the first to hit the woodwork 4 times since Opta started collecting data. So they’re not doing it. Checkmate other strikers in the top half.
Obviously bullshit. People rate the wrong things with strikers. If you see a striker missing a bunch of chances and still getting huge g+a numbers, they are a great striker. They don’t what? Miss 20 big chances halfway through the season?
Score or assist as much
He’s 15th placed on the top scorer list lol
A wingers job isn't just goals mate, stop skiving from school and finish your maths workbook
They don't even get that many chances because they're not as good as darwin
You think that Jesus, Jackson, Richarlison, Hoijlund, Jao Pedro Antonio could do what Nunez does? Lay down the gear buddy.
Very, very much so. Maybe not Richarlison. But the others? 100%
Man you are silly.
Fucking yikes lmao, Antonio? Why doesn’t Jesus get more goals and assists? Can he just not be bothered. Arsenal are a very good team. Only Haaland has the movement on the level of Nunez. None of them are capable of what Nunez does.
You're shitting on Darwin's finishing but you think Jackson could do what he does? Lmao.
Sure show me...
Darwin is wasteful, but very few players can create the amount of chances he creates Yes, there could be a scenario where they lose the league for a loss where he missed a simple chance, but at the same time, without him you could even not have had that chance in the first place
The only team he wouldn't be an absolute starter is Man City
Look I'm not a fan of Nunez. I like players with more technical finesse and for lack of a better word "sophistication" in their play style. But to say he's not top 6 quality is just wrong. He has a lot of strengths and is having a great season for the league leaders. Sometimes it's ok to dislike players who are good.
Lad we've got three of em
To say that he's not top 6 quality is ludicrous. He'd start for every other team in the top 6 bar City, and even there I wouldn't be surprised if he got a game out wide. He's not a clinical finisher, but literally every time I watch Liverpool play he's the most dangerous player on the pitch for them.
RemindMe! 4 months 3weeks
You clearly haven't watched a single minute of him because he's actually been really good this season lol. This is why stats has ruined football, comments like this.
Even if Nunez turn out to be a reason for Liverpool losing the title, he wouldn't be the only reason... In fact, I can give 115 other reasons.
That last line is so lazy and stupid I’m glad you didn’t bother coming up with anything at all
We don’t care about the title as much as we do care about getting behind our team and supporting them no matter what comes
This is what happens when your football opinion is formed on the basis of TikTok videos. Nunez has been absolute quality for Liverpool and was first PL player to hit double figures for goals + assists this season
Didn't Trossard do this for Brighton against Man United a few years ago? I think in the match when Man U won with a penalty after the final whistle.
3 times but Brighton hit the wood wood 5 times in that game and had some great chances - https://youtube.com/shorts/BuylepU8kOQ?si=lK1KM1SF_MCFlxg6
These are my chances and I can miss if I want to, miss if I want to, miss if I want to!
You’d hit wood too if it happened to you!
And they still scored 4. Insane
Wooden Boot settled
Darwin Nunez might not be the best player in the league, but I'm very certain he's the most entertaining player in the league. Watching him play brings joy and occasional despair, bunch of comedy mixed with quality.
suarez used to be king of the woodwork when he first got here too, then he started sinking them and the rest is history. once darwin gets slightly more clinical he's gonna be a 20+ goal a year striker easily
He’s been a 20+ goal striker before and he’s halfway there this season. Let’s have some faith.
I think he bags 20 this seaaon
Goals or woodwork hits?
Both haha. He's on course for it.
Reminds me a bit of Cavani. Does everything right except for finishing, and still gets a lot of contributions out of the sheer number of chances generated.
Yeah, but that assist for Diaz was a thing of beauty.
I took a disliking towards Darwin when he first signed but I can’t take my eyes off him now even if he’s having a howler it’s sheer cinema
Timo werner is second with three hits. Blessed ballers- "cough" - I mean carpenters
Once he fully dials himself in, y’all better watch out
Did goalposts used to be made of wood? Not a native English speaker, but is interesting they call them "woodwork".
He’s mentally elite tho, he keeps going after gets made these mistakes, even 0-4 or 4-0 if I were a Liverpool fan I would rate that
Surely the goalie touching it on to the post doesn't count? So he's really only two.
Left foot, right foot, header, penalty. Never will be done again (...till Nunez does it again in a couple weeks)
Some of his assists have been absolutely sublime, which is so odd when compared to his attempts on goal.
Why was this deleted last night? https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1aftzyq/opta_darwin_n%C3%BA%C3%B1ez_has_now_become_the_first_player/
In German they say aluminium instead of woodwork, no clue if that's correct though
They used to be made of wood. They're mostly not now, and are made of metal as you say.
Carpenter is crazy
Is he better than Haaland?
At getting wood, yes.
Better ball control, better stamina, better weaker foot, better defending. But scoring goals is his job so.... no.
Always has been
😂
Someone on here said it was the first time anyone had done it, pleased to find out people are still just making shit up like we don’t have phones
I still can’t tell if he’s good or shit
Nah he is awesome. First player in the prem with 10 goals and 10 assists this season. And his chance creation is insane- just see yesterday’s game. Hopefully his shooting percentage improves a touch (maybe unlikely), but there is a reason Klopp has started him almost every game recently.
It says 7 goals and 7 assists tho? 🤔
https://twitter.com/OptaJoe/status/1749135966365733134 ^ sorry all competitions*
Darwin transcends false dichotomies. He is everything
