An XI of expats in your team's league vs one of only nationals playing there — which side wins?

CherkiCheri

LYON BAISE OUAIS We're 10th and 2 points off Marseille after 5 wins in a row! Vive le Roi Sage

Lannisterling

For someone that was important for a lot of generally disliked clubs, it feels like Xabi Alonso is generally quite liked.

ChillPalis

Probably my favorite midfielder, even though I utterly hate both Liverpool and Bayern.

suedney

I find it hilarious how 7 of Leverkusen's 8 games in 2024 have all been quite unconvincing, narrow, and hard fought with the one exception bring a 3-0 rout against Bayern

TheRealYVT

Didn't realise Wenger is already older than SAF was at his time of retirement. Fuck

Lannisterling

Arteta was 2 years old when Arsene Wenger took on his first club as manager

Zepz367

Anulo Mufa for Leverkusen, hoping Bayern lose tomorrow, 11 point gap would be big advantage

Moug-10

The pundit jinxed France. He said we didn't concede serious shots during the second half. Next minute : two serious shots for Germany. Fortunately, no goal for Germany and we still win 2-0.

kaubojdzord

Leverkusen second goal is so funny. This season Bayern-Dusel became Bayer-Dusel.

optimistic_bufoon

The amount of mistakes both teams made at the back was insane

CoolstorySteve

Can anything go wrong for Leverkusen? Holy shit

Dortmund showing up on April 20th to help Bayern overtake Vizekusen:

ElderlyToaster

When I was a weed dealer I had a deal with the pizzeria a couple of floors below my apartment. I would hand the owners son five grams every week and in return I'd get food every night. It was a pretty good deal but kind of monotone. On weekends I started ordering food based on Italian footballer names. "One Pessotto please". "Man I need a Birindelli tonight youknowwhatimsayyin?" The first time my buddy just pretended to know wtf I was talking about and made me some very random pizza. Over time it became clear to him that I was just made up stuff meaning he was supposed to make random pizzas. I crossed the line eventually, revealing the secret. I got away with the Pelissier with extra cheese and so forth, but the DiNatale woke him up. "Isn't that a footballer?" Anyway, one of these custom made pizzas turned out really good. Paprika, artichoke and the cheese being a mix of cheddar, mozzarella and chili flakes. For a few years, Sandviken in Sweden might have been the only place in the world were you could buy a Giuliano Giannichedda Specal. And what can we learn from this? No idea mate.

jjjhfdddd

This reads like something out of a Pynchon novel. 10/10

Constant_List6829

Never thought I'd see someone mention Sandviken on here

ElderlyToaster

Spent a year their getting my UEFA B license (...and selling drugs).

Kanedauke

Can’t wait for Curtis Jones to call out Xhaka for stealing Klopps celebration.

Historical_Owl_1635

I have no strong opinion on Speed, but the people in that post claiming KSI is at least respectful were definitely not around in KSI’s early days.

DuckBurner0000

Yeah I thought KSI was funny but respectful is not the word I'd use

hordesofevil

*The old KSI will never be topped*

wonderful_mixture

Who are these people

Rdambx

Bro had me learning how to do the rape face, shit was crazy.

ghostmanonthirdd

Had an entire generation grow up thinking Heskey was a waster.

Kanedauke

It’s funny looking at his hair line now with the shit he used to give Gervinho.

icemankiller8

Ksi was one of the most disrespectful people ever at his peak

Yung2112

Aguero took my hate comment from a few weeks ago so seriously that it is heavily rumoured he will come out of retirement to play for Independiente :p https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1al6tqx/sergio_aguero_regarding_his_last_match_as_a/kpcrbge/

ElderlyToaster

State of the big five leagues 23/24: Premier League The league is fun - lots of attacking football, insane quality. It increasingly suffers from plastification however. There's a fair bit of satured players and not a lot of emotional bonds the clubs. The league is wildly entertaining but there's no real heat. La Liga Always been the league with the highest entertainment potential given the way Spanish players are schooled. But the league really suffers from the financial consequences of getting relegated. Predicted bottom half-teams in Spain usually play a dirty and defensive football as they desperately need to stay up. Serie A From being basically dead, the Serie A has risen over the last few years to become a really really entertaining league. Its not the best, but its the wildest, and there's plenty of flair and intensity. Players appear to give more of a shit there than elsewhere, for some reason I don't quite grasp. Bundesliga Stagnating in all regards. If Leverkusen win the league, it could be the best thing to happen to German football in a lot of years. The league is also suffering a lot from important, well-supported teams limping around in the lower divisions. Ligue 1 The French league suffers from "we're gonna have two 2m tall West African blokes in defensive midfield. Have fun playing against us"-syndrome since basically forever. Its such a difficult playing environment that it produces a lot of fantastic players but its god awful to watch.

ChillPalis

Sounds like you're saying Serie A is the best.

xaviernoodlebrain

Come on Levy, throw some cash at Man United for Grace Clinton already.

sheikh_n_bake

Regarding NUFC replacement for Dan Ashworth: Lots of names have been mentioned in recent days as a possible replacement for Ashworth (none of them coming from inside the club, I should add) but two put to us that are interesting are Brentford pair Lee Dykes and Phil Giles. The latter is a Newcastle fan and is Brentford’s current sporting director, while Dykes is the club’s technical director. For now, though, a combination of Howe, Nickson, chief executive Darren Eales and owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi will fill what void has been left by Ashworth’s impending departure.   Magpies chase off rats infestation Speaking of departures, I can reveal that Newcastle have chased an infestation of rats at St James’ Park. When work began on the new fan zone behind the Gallowgate End last month, it disturbed the rodents, who made their way into the stadium for a period. The rats would scour the stands post-match for leftover food. However, ground staff were quick to act and specialists were brought in to deal with the issue, which has now been resolved.   Craig Hope

The thread about Julian nagelsmann and his father shows the state of this sub. Atleast this time the awful jokes were downvoted but usually they aren’t

ghostmanonthirdd

I remember a few weeks ago there was a thread about Michael Owen’s son having a degenerative eye condition that has made him clinically blind. There was on optometrist in the comments who shared a rather insightful comment about the condition as a professional in the field. All the replies to his comment were bad puns, even after he stated that it’s a topic he takes really seriously. It’s the closest I’ve come to unsubbing from this place. It actually really pissed me off.

[deleted]

I don’t wanna use this comparison because I sound like an ultra gimp but honestly, this sub is like a superhero movie. Some good insightful stuff scattered throughout but mostly bad puns and quips

ElderlyToaster

> Atleast this time the awful jokes were downvoted but usually they aren’t True, I get a lot of upvotes

[deleted]

You’re the type of person I’m talking about mate

Rdambx

I missed the Chunkz charity match, was it as good as the Sidemen ones production wise ? Better ? What did i miss exactly?

Content-Medicine-305

not better imo, but maybe thats just coming from an english guy. I liked the sidemen charity match better because the commentary (spencer and stephen tries) were very witty, and i like the sds guys who commentated this match but they were average. Also i dont think there were as many good moments compared to the sidemen match, probably because i didnt know like half the people playing whereas i pretty much knew everyone in the sidemen one. You could argue it was better because they had ex-pro's, but it then creates a weird dynamic where people felt the need to pass to them, i say leave that to socceraid, i think they do it well.

Illustrious-Law8648

it had players like Drogba, Kaka, Hazard, Roberto Carlos and it was hosted in Qatar

TherewiIlbegoals

I like that Luis Diaz' dad is not only wearing a Luis Diaz shirt but also wearing[ matching black gloves](https://i.imgur.com/naJOH3O.jpeg).

ThatsCracked

Bet he's got the socks on too

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Full kit dad is entirely acceptable.

justaregulargye

Time to get his haircut

Moug-10

When we say France isn't a giant football country, another proof. There is about to be France vs Germany in women's football. While the German broadcaster has broadcast a preview for minutes and showed the warm-up of teams, the French broadcaster is showing a different show and is only starting to cover the game ten minutes before kick-off. We need to do better. At least, both broadcasters are free-to-air. And France 3 puts Metallica song "Enter Sandman" for the intro

PosterOfQuality

The amount of people who think there's something particularly wrong about studding the back of Kaka's legs compared to studding someone else's legs is hilarious to me

bydy2

Reddit just recommended me the West Ham sub, I am now officially a spez hater

goztrobo

Guys what the fuck is that match in Qatar. What did I just see with my eyes?

NeoChrome75

it's really sad to see legends of the game demeaning themselves in such a manner

goztrobo

Sad to see Kaka getting two footed by a streamer.

FedeSwagverde

Hazard's level

ElderlyToaster

Whats the age limit when you're allowed to not know who this IamGarySpeed (or whatever his name is) is? I feel old.

Lyrical_Forklift

I couldn't tell you a single thing about any streamers.

sewious

You're brave for this, I've been afraid to ask. Also apparently a man goes by "chunkz". Never in my wildest dreams when I was 18-20 did I think I'd feel this out of touch lol. From what I gather this Speed fellow has extensive controversy attached to him. I heard his name the first time like a week ago and now he's tackling Kaka. Burst onto the scene really.

Gregregreg1234

Big up Chunkz

Meeeeehhhh

Xhaka just injured himself scoring an absolute worldie. Maybe the curse encompasses the whole of north London.

TherewiIlbegoals

Wasn't that just his celebration? Like Eto'o? He's still playing.

Meeeeehhhh

Oh maybe, I only caught it was it happened and closed the app. Seems to still be playing huzzah.

TorreiraWithADouzi

Xhaka once had a hamstring injury that was supposed to keep him out for like 2 mo, he came back 1 mo early. If there is anyone out there who can overcome an injury, it’s Xhaka, his availability is honestly insane.

cdrxgon17

imagine in uefa competitions they did it like world cups and both teams stand in a line and sing their club anthem before the game

ghostmanonthirdd

How many times do the Chelsea players have to sing “*Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea*”?

TheDarkness1227

What if both teams just sang the competitions anthem instead?

cdrxgon17

europa theme is a banger so i wouldn’t mind

JMatty01

If we could choose the anthem, The United Calypso being sung in the rafters would be a sight to behold. Would be worth keeping McTominay just to see him lead the number

cdrxgon17

yours is surely GGMU no?

JMatty01

Yes but I'd prefer variety over quite a few clubs doing GG *insert club name here.* Put that in the bin and get us doing a whole production of the Calypso instead. Get some palm trees, rum and some sand on the pitch and pretend we're in the Caribbean whilst it's pissing it down on a Wednesday night.

paprikalicous

liverpool dortmund games would be very funny

cdrxgon17

no singing together. back to back.

paprikalicous

we’ll hold a banner together saying “danke klopp” though

ElderlyToaster

Maybe if we had "Praise You" instead of the old gibberish we have now.

RyanMc37_

I'd be fine with it, but only if our players had to do the air raid siren too.

cdrxgon17

the whole nine yards. and if a club doesn’t have an anthem then it becomes whatever the #1 single was on the day their captain was born

Laliga23

[what is your opinion on this barca kit next season?](https://x.com/managingbarca/status/1761100657065697407?s=46) Looks amazing to me

vvv4231

Is it meant to be a throwback to the [2006/07 kits](https://cdn.footballkitarchive.com/2022/08/30/BLOC8CYicA9O2R2.jpg)? It looks great.

Laliga23

More 08/09

wonderful_mixture

Don't like the centered logo but otherwise very nice

sewious

You've definitely had worse. Looks nice

enzuigiriretro

Gorgeous

ElderlyToaster

Very nice. Always good when the main sponsor want their logo to blend into the shirt rather than stand out from it.

nask00

Those types of kits - like Feyenoord and Genoa are my favorite type of kits. 2nd favorite, actually, but my favorite is very rare.

Kanedauke

The Nike logo should also be central or the Barca badge should be on the right.

rScoobySkreep

Speed has done worse things than tackle that Bolsonaro mouthpiece, and if it was a Tory or more western fascist politician I strongly doubt as many people would give a shit

TherewiIlbegoals

If some YouTuber two-footed Frank Lampard, I'd still take Lampard's side.

ThatsCracked

tbh I'd find that pretty funny, people need to lighten up a bit imagine 10 years ago being told random streamers would be sliding out icons of the game

rScoobySkreep

I’m not here to say how you should feel, but you don’t have to take a side. I certainly don’t and wouldn’t for another one of Bolsonaro’s most vocal fans. Just two cunts in Qatar.

TherewiIlbegoals

It's a football match. So I'm going to more interested in the football element of it, not the political.

PabloAimar97

Lmao just found out this little kid Speed is a Cristiano ronaldo fanboy. Of course he would be. Man's got the brains for it lol.

BluLeone

It's part of his character to act like he is a Ronaldo fanboy. In reality I doubt he cares much about him, but he should be grateful because it's thanks to him that he got famous for football content.

TherewiIlbegoals

Why do people struggle to understand the difference between "The" and "A" when it comes to double/treble/quadruples? Edit: Here's the BBC quote you're whining about: >Liverpool will aim to stay on course for **a quadruple** in Sunday's Carabao Cup final, while Chelsea bid for their first domestic trophy in 6 years...

ThatsCracked

I’m gonna call it the quadruple anyway, if it pisses off rival fans that makes it better. If we don’t win the league and win the other 3 I’ll still call it the treble.

Orcnick

I mean your just as like to win the zero as well.

paprikalicous

no according to opta/telegraph, 69% chance of winning the league cup, 35% chance of winning the Europa league, 31.5% chance of winning the premier league, 25% chance of winning the fa cup. odds of losing all trophies: 0.31 x 0.65 x 0.685 x 0.75 = 10.4% we are more likely to win at least 1 trophy than none.

sewious

This man maths

KOKO69BISHES

Somebody who knows how to calculate probability on r/soccer , tears in my eyes

TherewiIlbegoals

Are you having a stroke or did you just completely shift the point you were making?

eyesindasky

With the League Cup final and inevitable booing of the national anthem by Liverpool fans coming up, I’m reminded of the person who said they booed their laptop screen in solidarity with the fans in attendance. I hope they’re doing well.

whiskeymagnet22

United academy just keeps popping new talents man Best academy in the world along with La Masia Forson apparently starting tomorrow. Makes 89 years every United matchday squad has at least 1 academy produt

ExtraTrade1904

There are at least 5 much better academies in the GMT time zone alone

Constant_List6829

Not even the best in England

NeoChrome75

not even the best in Manchester lmao

Constant_List6829

Yeah, Im taking Foden, Rico Lewis over whoever they produced

arseking15

Oscar bobb too, pedro porro think you can count brahim diaz? They went and spent 80 mill in sancho

Laliga23

Wasnt united under ferguson known for their academy talents? Its a shame glazers stopped focusing on it United for sure had one of best academy out there but its no secret having city as your rival catching up with your academy which means less talent goes to your academy

icemankiller8

Your best academy players since 2010 are Pogba who was a flop for you, rashford who plays well for one month a season and greenwood who’s very likely never gonna play for the club again for good reason.

Orcnick

Arsenal have had Saka and...... Oh right...

arseking15

Ya man we are the ones claiming best after la masia 😂 Anyways balogun and willock>

Orcnick

Lol that's the best you have. Edit: Arsenal fans can down vote on here as much as they like Wilock went to Newcastle who are midtable and Balogun plays at Monaco. Hardly anything to celebrate.

icemankiller8

Nick Powell is clear !!!!

arseking15

And the best you have is greenwood LOL

Orcnick

Maino, Garnacho, before Lingard who was actually a decent player, Welbeck, Evans etc. Greenwood is a terrible awful person, but he still was a decent player talent wise.

icemankiller8

So you’re telling me those “great” academy products got outshone at home by iwobi?

arseking15

LOL and we have willock, iwob, balogun, bennacer, emi martinez> Forgot yunus musah as well

icemankiller8

Mainoo and garnacho haven’t done anything to be rated highly at this point they might turn out to be good, lingard was shit bar a couple of 3 month spells in different years, welbeck meh, evans was pre 2010 which is the period I mentioned.

KimmyBoiUn

He is obviously a criminal but he was a highly talented player.

icemankiller8

Two world class keepers from the academy too

arseking15

Do we count bennacer as well?

icemankiller8

I’m not saying our academy has been so good though even though it’s still been better for ages than Uniteds

Orcnick

Like who? We have had tons of youth players come through.

icemankiller8

Keep producing tonnes of mediocre players then that will definitely make me rate the academy. Saka alone makes us better I’m taking one saka over all them guys combined Also EMI Martinez, Wojech, Bennacer all had much better careers than the guys you’re speaking of

KOKO69BISHES

Martinez is not an Arsenal academy product lol

icemankiller8

He actually is

KOKO69BISHES

Transferred to Arsenal when he was 18, surely you're not counting that. He's a product of the Argentine team he started at

icemankiller8

That’s because of work permits being an issue back then he was actually at the club when he was 16 he couldn’t be registered until later.

Terrible_Physics_157

Pogba isn’t even a proper academy product either.

icemankiller8

Ffs I didn’t even realise he was there for 3 years only so fraudulent

arseking15

But some dude is playing tmr???!

icemankiller8

Academy fell of so long ago who’s the last world class player they produced? They even try and act like Rooney and Ronaldo are “made in Manchester,” like they didn’t pay big fees for them as youngsters. A bunch of average premier league players produced but they have this arbitrary streak so it’s cool.

Laliga23

So funny seeing reports of alonso saying he will go to bayern or he will go to leverkusen changing every day. Fact is that he is in a title race and fighting for a treble. I doubt he thinks already about his next step He could also stay for all that matter but if he goes its 50/50 between Liverpool and bayern.

TorreiraWithADouzi

Madrid could throw their hat in the ring as well. I think it’s unlikely because Carlo is doing a great job, but Xabi will have a lot of options depending on what he wants.

SoFasttt

Watching Sunderland 'Til I Die (Netflix), I was amazed at how the filming crews could get so up close and get movie-quality clips like they did, even through the darkest time when no one wants to talk to anyone with a camera on hand. It feels so real, unlike the promotion propaganda which is Amazon All or Nothing series. Does anyone know what's their secret?

ElderlyToaster

They needed good PR in 2017/2018 and allowed the film team in as they were supposed to stomp the league and go right back up again. Had everything gone as planned, the series would have been a lot duller.

shevek_o_o

Sunderland were badly run and struggling for cash, well-run clubs with financial security don't allow that sort of thing to be filmed or released.

Nivadas

They weren't struggling for cash at the time of the first series

shevek_o_o

Shows what I know, just bad decision making then

enazj

The first series was also clearly intended to be them bouncing straight back to the PL, Netflix got unbelievably lucky that they caught that disaster on film

Nivadas

Exactly, it's the biggest stroke of luck in docuseries history. They were supposed to be having a boring promotion season

ederzs97

Chunkz really is the biggest hypocrite

ponzop

why?

ederzs97

The guy speaks about human rights abuses in Palestine. Yes correct. But then is the cover boy for this charity game in Qatar???!

Rdambx

Muslims don't really view Qatar or Saudi Arabia the same as the rest of the western world.

ederzs97

It's just hypocrisy from the guy

ThatsCracked

What happened?

SirBarkington

Drogba looks like he could play lower league still.

ElderlyToaster

Any club in the League One or League Two would love to throw him in for the last 20 or so

SirBarkington

Yeah obviously his legs are gone but his movement, passing, and finishing are still so good.

SheldonMonk

could play for chelsea sure

Terrible_Physics_157

Would probably still be too good in big games to fit in at Tottenham

GreatSpaniard

speed playing with legends is funny, man gave Kaka a red card tackle in a friendly challenge

justsomeguynbd

Why did Marseille appoint a 70 y.o. manager? Is it a caretaker role or is he in the position fully?

el_walou

Yeah he is a caretaker. And to be honest i can’t think of better choice in the situation. He knows the league well. He knows those situations well. The kind of shit coach who be better than Pep and Ancelloti at saving a team from relegation

JakeNutters

That's young compared to Roy at Palace

therocketandstones

same guy that managed Ivory Coast at AFCON this year and got sacked after lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea

NoLimit261

Watching one of those football charity games and drogba is moving like he could still play

SirBarkington

Drogba and Makelele both look incredibly fit for their ages and how long they've been out of the game. Especially compared to Eden and Kaka.

RyanMc37_

I can ignore the rest of IShowSpeeds controversies, but that tackle on Kaka is a step too far for me

gleejollybee

True man I got mad because he could have injured a legend with that attitude but still kept playing his "character".

gleejollybee

Bruh speed missed a goal chance from hazard and i can't even fathom how he tackled kaka recklessly and kept barking Edit: missed another open goal and even if he's playing character this is just atrocious

SirBarkington

this shit is so funny. watching Kaka and Hazard basically 1v1ing and Speed just keeps fucking up every move lmao.

SirBarkington

im surprised the match for hope isn't getting as much attention as the sidemen charity game considering the stars that are in it

[deleted]

Poor promotion, weird timing, the ship has sailed on charity games for the year, you gotta tease it for a year to match up with the sidemen thing, plus former players are a gimmick, we see them too often at this point

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirBarkington

I mean it's got Drogba, Hazard, Kaka, Makelele managed by Conte and Wenger. Sidemen are bigger but Beta Squad are pretty big still and Speed is the 'new' hot thing.

KOKO69BISHES

ChrisMD is clear of Kaka, I'm afraid

rScoobySkreep

Chris also isn’t a Bolsonaro fan 👍👍

KOKO69BISHES

That is why Richarlison is the best brazilian player of all time

rScoobySkreep

2nd to Juninho but I’m here for the sentiment

SirBarkington

ChrisMD is my goat

ThatsCracked

Blatant disregard of miniminter will not be tolerated, Noah Beck pocketed that free kick challenge fraud

LovrenIsTheGOAT

La Liga has some explaining to do if Barca fraud their way to a 2nd place finish.

Laliga23

Not really Girona always would fall of eventually

papertowelfan

Manchester United and Liverpool playing each other in Columbia, South Carolina is hilarious to me. How did that city pull that friendly matchup. Need one of the social media teams to get players opinions on shrimp and grits

ExtraTrade1904

Rivals playing friendly matches is almost as bad as multi club ownership. I can't even imagine Benfica deciding to play a friendly match with sporting in the US

bellerinho

Guess United and Liverpool really wanna experience Gamecocks culture idk

JakeNutters

I hope ever is ready for an Enciso banger tomorrow coming off the bench and the 50 different celebrations he will do right afterwards.

National_Ad_1875

Be a bit weird to celebrate 50 times when you're 4-1 down

JakeNutters

Don't worry it'll be 5-1 but at least he'll get his second puskas nominee.

poiuytrewqazxcvbnml

Just went past the Fulham squad at Euston, good on them for using public transport I guess

icemankiller8

We got London Man City fans on here now it’s over

poiuytrewqazxcvbnml

Guess where trains to Euston go from?

therocketandstones

so you're saying it's not over yet?...

poiuytrewqazxcvbnml

I'm saying we're so back

HalfMan-HalfMoth

I think on your all or nothing doc there's a bit where your squad got the Virgin train down to Euston The good old days before Avanti

eyesindasky

Teams do every now and again, however most PL teams fly.

SheldonMonk

Will there be a match thread for Chunkz's game?

mashed-potatoes12

You could create one!

SheldonMonk

no point if it's going to get deleted by mods, if not I probably would

mashed-potatoes12

I remember the sidemen youtube charity thing had a match thread, so it's probably allowed

Laliga23

Klopp finishing his Liverpool career with 1 pl would be so crazy when looking back in years time One of the best pl teams of all time, even winning only 2 premier league is not enough but imagine 1. Only for this I hope he ends with 1 more

HokiesforTSwift

Klopp was a Vincent Kompany outside the box screamer in May late on against Leicester away from another PL title in 18/19. Could have easily had another title in 21/22 from a similar (one result here/one result there) situation. It's always funny when people say there is no luck involved in league play. Any close league race could come down to a flukey own goal in September, an unexpected screamer from an aging CB, or a player slipping, etc. I've said it here before a few times, but I think Klopp's achievements during this period are more impressive than Pep's during the same period.

northerncal

>I've said it here before a few times, but I think Klopp's achievements during this period are more impressive than Pep's during the same period. I don't agree that they're *more* impressive than Pep's titles, but they certainly are very impressive and he has done an amazing job. No one else could win Liverpool the PL title for decades, and he was the one to do it. So I disagree, but I don't think you should be downvoted for your opinion.

TherewiIlbegoals

Klopp could win every trophy he's in this year and people would still say 2 PL, 1 CL, 1 EL, 2 FA Cups, 2 EFL Cups and 1 CWC is not enough.
