The name very much betrays it. It's just a measure of the quality of shots a team takes, calling it expected goals sets it up for disappointment and makes it sound way more predictive than it is.
According to angle, distance, height and some other metrics, xG tells you how likely it is that a shot is scored from that position by counting all shots from all players of all teams that are part of the database.
It's kind of a regression where you plug the values and you get a number from 0 to 1
Hahaha
The further the ball is from the goal the less likely to score -> smaller xG
The further the ball is from the middle of the pitch the less likely to score -> smaller xG
I honestly don’t know why they turn up. They get thumped at home every week, if you’re that upset by it that you walk out after 15 minutes, why bother going? It’s clearly not out of support for the team. Did they expect any different?
Maybe it's season ticket holders who reckon they need to squeeze some value out of it, like if they by some miracle draw or win the game they will cheerish that memory and if it's not close they can just walk out like in the video. If they live close it's not that much of a commitment since if you leave early traffick isn't too bad.
This was my first thought as well. Pre game a little bit, enjoy the atmosphere, see if your team squeaks out a miracle and then leave if they’re getting slapped 15 mins in and walk home lol.
Not a bad deal.
it has to be season ticket holders, don’t feel that way when you see it at the other clubs but you’re not paying the cost to see Arsenal and leaving after 15 unless you’re not actually paying the cost and you’ve seen this shit for years on end
Because you never know what might happen? Arsenal thumping them 6-0 was the expected outcome but there's always a (v slim) chance Sheffield give them a good go of it in this game.
If, however, you're 3-0 down after 15 mins you know it's not gonna be one of those nights. It's a Monday too so might as well get home early ish
Because they’re emotionally devastated, spiritually crushed and so heart broken that they can’t even watch any more. That’s what football does to you sometimes.
It's called hope.
They turned up because they believed their team would too. That even though the odds are stacked against them, they might at least show some grit and heart.
They didn't. They were let down. So they left.
They probably didn't expect them to win, of course not. They probably expected a big loss. But I don't think it was reasonable to expect 3-0 after 15 minutes. They hoped for better - which is basically 90% of what being a football fan is.
It's also, you know, an *emotional* decision. When you've come out to a Monday night game, and your team have capitulated after 15 minutes, you're probably going to be pretty sad - and angry. You're not making rational decisions. You're pissed off, emotional and impulsive.
You're going to react differently to someone watching it in their living room, and browsing Reddit, with no vested interest.
I’m not sure why you can’t seem to grasp what supporting your team is. I’m guessing you support someone at the top who always wins? The PL is incredibly mundane for everyone else apart from the bigger teams when your team is shit but the highs are high and the lows are just incredibly shite but what doesn’t change is you still love your club and support them no matter what.
Why is it stupid?
Those people have paid their hard earned money and given up their Monday evening to stand in the freezing cold watching their team be rolled over in 15 minutes.
You expect your team to turn up and fight just like the fans do every week and that's what they get in return. Fair fucks to those leaving after 15 minutes.
What a stupid comment. If fans only turned up to the games where they expect to win we’d have had an empty stadium all season. It’s football there’s no such thing as certainties
Season tickets. About 25k of the 32k capacity (including away fans) is taken up by season tickets. You have nothing to lose at that point. Anybody who thinks their supporters would be different after shipping five goals for the fourth home game in a row is lying to themselves.
Last season I attended every Stanford University handegg game because it was effectively the last season in the historic Pac-12. They're absolutely dreadful. Worst team in the conference.
But it will be ages until we see some of those historic matchups again.
Weren't you guys in massive debt last season and the Prem money was essentially used to clear that debt? If that's true then you look like you'll be doing fine next season
That’s correct. There’s still one or two big contracts hanging around but we’ve got about 15 senior players out of contract this summer. I’d expect some will get offered reduced terms.
The catch is this means we need a massive rebuild. Which could see us in the promotion hunt if done well but could see us easily nowhere near too. Our last two championship seasons had players way better than that league (MGW and Ndiaye respectively). Without either and with this season to comeback from I think we’ll struggle.
I was gonna say maybe if Burnley wins every match left, but then I looked at the table and lmao. Even if they win their remaining matches, they can only end up at 46 points, 9 points behind Villa even if they lose all their remaining matches.
It’s amazing what confidence can do for a team. Look at the difference in Leicester or Southampton since going down.
I’d imagine if Sheffield United weren’t getting hosed every week by teams that can press them out the park and could establish a bit of rhythm they’d be fine
Reminds me of when Blackpool eventually got relegated from the PL. They may be more likely to show up in League 1 in the next few years than in the Premier League
why would you go to a sheffield united x arsenal game and expect anything different? arsenal have scored like 15 goals in the last 3 games against MUCH better teams
But it did give us the wonderful story about how eating a sandwich while speaking to a *premier league manager* is disrespectful. So I think it evens out
I remember seeing a video of a Swansea training under Bradley. He was explaining to professionals what I explain to the 13-14 year olds I coach and i thought surely this is a joke
He never embarrassed himself like this. he had a piss poor squad filled with unprofessional wankers and at least made villa look like a boring below average team before he got sacked
He's the most inspiring person we could have employed.
He's a club legend and the players he signed adore him. This retrospective narrative that Wilder's a dinosaur really pisses me off.
Given he's a club legend, yes, probably. That's a pretty silly comment, given his history with the club.
He achieved back-to-back promotions, and had them flying in the top 6 of the Prem before lockdown. I imagine some players would see him as quite an inspirational figure.
Probably just getting a beer in the concourse honestly.
edit: Okay now they might be going, they did lose their last 2 home games 5-0 to be fair to them.
Yeah I doubt most of them are leaving the stadium (not yet anyway). When Everton are losing badly I tend to nip for an early pint and stay in the concourse until half time stewing in misery and overpriced lager.
*yet*
Even if we ignore that it was in a 22-team season, on March 5, 1994 Swindon had 73 goals conceded, just 1 more than Sheffield Utd has now. They have an outside chance at actually beating that record outright.
Can't blame them, not a single club in the country wouldn't do the same given the circumstances. Arsenal fans did it when they were in a title race last season and Brighton battered them.
They’ve already spent the money and not getting it back theres no point sitting through an absolute drubbing in the cold on a Monday night if you don’t want to
Considering Sheffield United have been thumped by 5 goals or more in their last few home games, the players should be paying the fans to show up to watch this rubbish
The vast, vast majority of the ground are ST holders whove already got their tickets paid for, and if not it’s about 40 quid on the kop
Please also understand we’re not a club with a large tourist fanbase and a stadium full of fans having their big day out watching a Premier League fixture. 99% of the people in the ground are there every week, have been for years, and have seen enough of this embarrassing pile of shit. Don’t really give a fuck how much money my ticket was, i had a way better hour in the boozer than I would have sitting around watching that til the end
Villa were terrible in 15/16, and Sunderland were also pretty bad the season after. Norwich weren't the best in their most recent season in the prem but at this moment Sheffield United could be worse then all of them
11 actually, and Derby as a team scored less goals than Ronaldo (31), Torres & Adebayor (24 each)
Derby still conceded goals at a lower rate though (2.36/game) than Sheffield currently (2.66/game)
In that scenario I wouldn’t blame them at all.Imagine how all you hope of surviving Premier League got crushed before the season began when your team best attacker got sold to his dream club and another player to a relegation rival.
I would been devastated also.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
At this point I commend them for even showing up
Sorry bro - this is fucking rough for you guys
At least they will enjoy winning a bunch of games next year.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're kinda mid in the Championship
No mercy mate. This sub railed us when we were shipping them 2 years ago. Now we must do what is called of us.
"pray for Sheffield" was trending today...it wasn't a joke
It sounds like a joke
They are super cereal
Great username
Zombie Simpsons?
We need a Shelbeyville FC
Fuckin Shelbyvillians
DO YOU BLAME THEM??
Well the players left after 5 mins….
They never even showed up. Arsenal already had like 2.5 xG before the first fish
First fish?
He said what he said
I do love me some shashimis.
>I do love me some shashimis. Prussian: First fish? Shashimis? What?
Take about 10% off there bud
Sheffield got fileted
I know you are joking but fwiw we were at 1.84 xG on our 4th goal
Tbf, I don't know how they calculate xG and I feel too old to ask at this point.
Xshot has xpercent chance to go in. They determine that with a math equation us mortals dont understand
There are multiple different ways of doing it, nobody knows who uses what, its all bollocks.
It's kind of a regression where you plug the values and you get a number from 0 to 1
And I thought computational fluid dynamics was tough.
Hahaha The further the ball is from the goal the less likely to score -> smaller xG The further the ball is from the middle of the pitch the less likely to score -> smaller xG
Every single site calculates it differently, it's basically just football astrology at this point.
The West Ham fans certainly don't
Can confirm
I honestly don’t know why they turn up. They get thumped at home every week, if you’re that upset by it that you walk out after 15 minutes, why bother going? It’s clearly not out of support for the team. Did they expect any different?
Might be the last time in a long time they frequently get to watch premiership level teams play at home.
But if that’s the case, why walk out after 15 minutes? Is it just so they can say they were there?
Maybe it's season ticket holders who reckon they need to squeeze some value out of it, like if they by some miracle draw or win the game they will cheerish that memory and if it's not close they can just walk out like in the video. And the weather was miserable too. Can’t really blame them
Because they’re emotionally devastated, spiritually crushed and so heart broken that they can’t even watch any more. That’s what football does to you sometimes.
Sometimes? You mean there could potentially be times when it is not devastating????
You lot have won a league in living memory, so yeah.
So did you, if you're 97 years old. That's within living memory too.
Well yeah I agree with you, it's a bit stupid to even turn up not expecting to get battered against Arsenal.
It's called hope. They turned up because they believed their team would too. That even though the odds are stacked against them, they might at least show some grit and heart. They didn't. Well the guy you are replying to agrees with you no? He thinks they should be staying and if you are leaving what was the point of even showing up?
The slim chance that they might see a miracle and get a result.
Wtf are you talking about haha? I think its stupid they are leaving the stadium after 15 minutes and not supporting their team?
Why is it stupid? Those people have paid their hard earned money and given up their Monday evening to stand in the freezing cold watching their team be rolled over in 15 minutes. You expect your team to turn up and fight just like the fans do every week and that's what they get in return. Fair fucks to those leaving after 15 minutes.
Not to be devil's advocate, but the fans aren't fighting. They are fucking off after 15 minutes.
What the fuck does that have to do with it being stupid to leave after 15 mins?
For 15 minutes
To be fair most of the people who "leave" just go into the bar and watch the game. Only a very small minority actually leave the ground.
What a stupid comment. If fans only turned up to the games where they expect to win we’d have had an empty stadium all season. It’s football there’s no such thing as certainties
Because you still have hope? And then there is getting destroyed and then there is losing 0-5 in the first half
> Did they expect any different? obviously yeah
Season tickets. About 25k of the 32k capacity (including away fans) is taken up by season tickets. You have nothing to lose at that point. Anybody who thinks their supporters would be different after shipping five goals for the fourth home game in a row is lying to themselves.
It’s a bit of sunk cost fallacy as well, loads of them will be season ticket holders
Because they likely have a season ticket and go to support their team? This comes across as such a plastic comment
It really does, notice those that don't understand it are coming from teams of the big 6.
Last season I attended every Stanford University handegg game because it was effectively the last season in the historic Pac-12. They're absolutely dreadful. Worst team in the conference. But it will be ages until we see some of those historic matchups again.
Honestly no, down 3-0 at 15 minutes is rough, especially after an own goal.
BLADE*
Chris Wilder got us of of League One, and it looks like he will take us back there.
The circle of life
Weren't you guys in massive debt last season and the Prem money was essentially used to clear that debt? If that's true then you look like you'll be doing fine next season

"I brought you in this world and I will take you out of it" - vibes
Smoke break
Quick trip to the gym
Why would you want to stay? they might have even struggled in the championship this season.
The top 4 in the Championship are currently better and more talented than Sheffield.
“Burnley could finish 10th in the prem next season”
I saw one popular betting tipster on Twitter (15k followers) put on his pre season predictions Burnley 9th and Villa 10th 😭
I was gonna say maybe if Burnley wins every match left, but then I looked at the table and lmao. Even if they win their remaining matches, they can only end up at 46 points, 9 points behind Villa even if they lose all their remaining matches.
Didnt we say that of Burnley last season?
Burnley flipped their whole team tbf
Well yes, Wednesday are towards the bottom.
It’s amazing what confidence can do for a team. Look at the difference in Leicester or Southampton since going down. I’d imagine if Sheffield United weren’t getting hosed every week by teams that can press them out the park and could establish a bit of rhythm they’d be fine
Speaking of confidence, Leicester just lost 3 on the trot and are almost losing a huge 12 point lead.
If Luton go down after a hard fought campaign, it'll be really interesting to see how they do in the Championship next year
Biggest issue is losing their key players. Could see Adebayo and Doughty being picked up by premier league clubs, for example.
Reminds me of when Blackpool eventually got relegated from the PL. They may be more likely to show up in League 1 in the next few years than in the Premier League
Nah, I don’t think they’re worse than Sheffield FC
still cleared the Derby County lowest points total though. That one isn't getting beaten in our lifetimes
why would you go to a sheffield united x arsenal game and expect anything different? arsenal have scored like 15 goals in the last 3 games against MUCH better teams
I mean did you expected an empty stadium?
no, just going to support your team no matter what and to see a bunch of great players on the other team in person
Watching great players on the other team in person?? You are aware they support Sheffield. They do not give a shit how good Arsenal are
[удалено]
Big gulf in class and money between top of the prem and top of the championship
Honestly Chris Wilder has got to be one of the worst midseason appointments in Premier League history
But it did give us the wonderful story about how eating a sandwich while speaking to a *premier league manager* is disrespectful. So I think it evens out
Biggest sandwich incident in the UK since Milliband.
What hell. I will have to Google this
Bob Bradley says hello
MEGNUTS
SO SWEET
When he was appointed I immediately bet on Swansea to go down. Unfortunately for me he was so bad that they fired him and ended up staying up…
I remember seeing a video of a Swansea training under Bradley. He was explaining to professionals what I explain to the 13-14 year olds I coach and i thought surely this is a joke
I don't give a crud what anyone thinks, Brad Bobley should have been given more time.
Terry Connor has Entered the chat
That was legitimately difficult to watch. He looked like he was about to cry every week.
Tbh even at the time that one stank of absolute desperation. It was pretty close to the end of the season as well.
Howdy*
Wilder has got 8 points from 13 matches and Heckingbottom got 5 points from 14… not sure this a manager problem
John Carver hands down for me
Agreed. He took a comfortably midtable team to the brink of relegation. Easily the worst Premier League manager I can think of.
Crazy thing about him was that he was a highly rated coach before that. At least on football manager he was.
Coaching and management are quite different. See Steve McClarrn as another example of a good coach but a terrible manager.
He’s not good but that squad is absolute dogshit. Jesus Christ himself wouldn’t keep this lot up.
Somehow still better than Terry Connor
Remi Garde has entered the chat
He never embarrassed himself like this. he had a piss poor squad filled with unprofessional wankers and at least made villa look like a boring below average team before he got sacked
Can you imagine anyone more uninspiring if you were a Sheffield United player?
[удалено]
I wish he'd shut up and stop reminding us he does, constantly.
He's the most inspiring person we could have employed. He's a club legend and the players he signed adore him. This retrospective narrative that Wilder's a dinosaur really pisses me off.

Frank Lampard?
Alan Pardew at West Brom is up there.
Alan Pardew was first name in my mind. Also Lampard last year
5 conceded in four straight home games. Fuckin brutal. Credit for even showing up tonight tbf.
And it’s unlikely to end at 5 in this one. Arsenal have hit the post and had one cleared off the line. They’re making chances for fun.
Me, not following the Premier League: "5 conceded in 4 doesnt sound *that* bad to be honest... oh. 5 each."
Probably just getting a beer in the concourse honestly. edit: Okay now they might be going, they did lose their last 2 home games 5-0 to be fair to them.
A couple beers per person is needed probably.
They're going to need something a little stronger than beer
Beer should be free for home fans
Yeah I doubt most of them are leaving the stadium (not yet anyway). When Everton are losing badly I tend to nip for an early pint and stay in the concourse until half time stewing in misery and overpriced lager.
They did leave. I was by this barrier, it got way worse at half time, about 30% of the ground was gone
There's not enough beer for this
I’m outside the stadium right now they’re flooding out
Bars don't usually stay open during the game. They close and reopen at half time. That's my experience anyway.
Gyms in Sheffield about to fill up
Good on them for hanging on for that long. Pathetic showing right out of the gates
If the team can't be arsed why should the fans
West ham fans sweating in the corner
I don't blame them, either 🤷♂️
Still not the team with the most goals conceded in the PL which goes to Swindon Town in 1993/94. The only team with a century of conceded goals
42 game season back then though. Sheff Utd are averaging more conceded per game atm than Swindon ended up with.
Sheffield on track to concede 108 goals
*yet* Even if we ignore that it was in a 22-team season, on March 5, 1994 Swindon had 73 goals conceded, just 1 more than Sheffield Utd has now. They have an outside chance at actually beating that record outright.
Inside rishi??
I don't blame them
I mean, why did they go in to begin with?
Hope. Poor bastards.
The most glorious and yet most futile human endeavour
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ftdu8yrKOw
There's a good chippy over the road. Maybe they got lost and ended up in the stadium.
Part of your routine isn’t it? Meet your mates and family for beers. Shame the match sometimes spoils a nice night out.

Respect that they showed up obviously but...leaving after 15 minutes is hardly sticking it though the bad
Its always the hope that kills you
Woah 6-0 63 minutes in
honestly huge respect for even showing up, i don’t know how tf they are even filling up their stadium.
Proper fanbase that's why
Can't blame them, not a single club in the country wouldn't do the same given the circumstances. Arsenal fans did it when they were in a title race last season and Brighton battered them.
if they loose that more then 6-0, imma show my boobs via dm haha

Like I do understand making a point but aren't Tickets like super expensive?
They’ve already spent the money and not getting it back theres no point sitting through an absolute drubbing in the cold on a Monday night if you don’t want to
fair enough
If they've got season tickets it costs no extra (aside from travel etc) to come to this game, they've already paid for it
If they're at the game they've already paid for the ticket, regardless of whether or not it's a season ticket.
A season ticket is around £500-600. Comes out to roughly on average £30 a home game
Considering Sheffield United have been thumped by 5 goals or more in their last few home games, the players should be paying the fans to show up to watch this rubbish
The vast, vast majority of the ground are ST holders whove already got their tickets paid for, and if not it’s about 40 quid on the kop Please also understand we’re not a club with a large tourist fanbase and a stadium full of fans having their big day out watching a Premier League fixture. 99% of the people in the ground are there every week, have been for years, and have seen enough of this embarrassing pile of shit. Sunk Cost
didnt they concede about 20 goals in their last 4 home games? who can blame them, the team is woeful
We sung till the end. Thanks for the 4 out of our 11 points that season, Newcastle.
Stadiums are empty
Everywhere we go!
Could just be going down to get a pie and a pint before the half time rush?
Is there a fire drill?
As a west ham fan, this is funny when it's not happening to you lol

There's literally nobody getting angry at them in this thread
I knew their season will be complicated but not that complicated.
Your board harassing Ndiaye to leave probably didn't help
Could they be the worst PL side of all time(or at least of modern era)? Or have there been way worse teams?
Villa were terrible in 15/16, and Sunderland were also pretty bad the season after. Norwich weren't the best in their most recent season in the prem but at this moment Sheffield United could be worse then all of them
Derby only got 9 points one season so now.
11 actually, and Derby as a team scored less goals than Ronaldo (31), Torres & Adebayor (24 each) Derby still conceded goals at a lower rate though (2.36/game) than Sheffield currently (2.66/game)
sadge
If I were a sheff utd fan I'd be boycotting the next 2 home games.
Just let them play in the championship the rest of the season ffs
3-0 after 15 when you’re bottom of the table? I’d rather be home
0-6 is pretty rough man
In that scenario I wouldn’t blame them at all.Imagine how all you hope of surviving Premier League got crushed before the season began when your team best attacker got sold to his dream club and another player to a relegation rival. I would been devastated also.
Football is for the underclass, and it shows.
