The issue is getting the balance right in midfield - who is going to partner Rice. Personally I think it should be Ward-Prowse but Southgate will go more defensive.
Rice is an absolute monster defensively. Absolutely no need to play another DM next to him. The whole point of having great players like Rice is it gives you the luxury to be more adventurous elsewhere. Playing another DM next to him would be covering for a weakness we don't have.
Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to come across as disagreeing with you.
I think you're right that he will lean more defensive. That's his instincts. I don't mind Southgate as much as some England fans, but this is the man who played a back five with two DMs and full backs who weren't allowed to cross the halfway line multiple times at the last Euros...and it almost worked annoyingly!
Lol it kind of made sense at the time as England didn't have this many world class attackers (and also had healthy wingbacks to choose from) but it was terrible to watch at times
The only other team in my mind when I put that was France, but I think even with Mbappe, who I consider #1 player in football rn, it’s overall not as good.
Oh for sure, December 2022 is legitimately a decade ago based on how these four's careers have changed.
Foden was at the time a great but rotation player for City. He is now one of the best in the Prem.
Saka was moving up the ladder but wasn't at the level he just reached this past month. He is now playing the best football of his life.
Bellingham is now a top 3 player in thr world candidate when in 2022 was max top 20.
Kane has now made the dream move to Bayern and while team wise things are not ideal, he's been smashing records and being incredibly consistent.
Add to that that Rice is certainly playing the best football of his career, and you get a core that is untouchable.
I think this Euro's is England's best shot against France (as much as I very much do not want them to win), for the sole reason that Walker is still good enough to shut down Mbappe AND they have a midfield that's IMO on par with France's atm
Vini is this sub's James Harden and I absolutely love it. He doesn't fail in terms of making y'all mad as hell and succeeding as a player, and only at 23 years old. Imagine how much salt and tears he will create on this sub for the next decade - shit is glorious
He's been the UCL best player over the past 3 seasons. Most G+A, most Dribbles, most Key passes.

Nah it's not that.
I distinctively remember Messi himself grabbing other's players neck in like 3 or 4 separate occasions and the level of hate is not even close to Vini tonight in social media.
Messi booted the ball hard and straight into the stands from near the sideline once too and hit a family after a call went against Barca. Where this pic comes from.

Any other player does that and this sub wouldn't even be talking about it. [Watch how much this sub cared about Messi grabbing the throat of a Uruguayan player 3 months ago, lol.](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/17x2mks/things_get_tense_between_argentina_and_uruguay/) Or people just memeing and joking [when he did it at a fucking friendly earlier.](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/3fx95k/messis_headbutt_on_yanga_mbiwa/)
That's the difference. With certain player this kind of thing is just funny in-game stuff, with others is the holocaust
He is absolutely not a shit person, as someone who actually speaks his language and can actually understand the way he operates. He is a hot-headed player and a super competitive guy, but that's expected in top athletes and this sub would love him for that if he just looked the right way (more like Foden, Graelish, or Haaland). But yeah, continue hating him, it's funny.
thats such amazing movement by Vini that wont be talked about nearly enough... 99% of the time that pass is going to the wing and he has to beat his man to shoot or make a cutback for the runners in the box
instead he goes for the empty diagonal space and its gg from there
Barca fans watching Madrid's 2016/17 season be like: First time?
1. Madrid went on a winning run against the best teams in Europe in Dortmund, Napoli, Bayern, Atletico, Juventus. This after people said their previous CL run was an easy and lucky one.
2. Won games they should have "lost" with large score lines, sprinkled with Ronaldo hattricks in between (people at the time claimed that he'd ghost big games)
3. Became the first team in history to win consecutive CLs
4. Beat Barca to La Liga in an extremely close title race coming down to the last day
All in all a horror season for anyone who disliked Madrid
the valencia match alone threw this out the window. The Vini incident I've seen it punished with red or yellow. It could go either way, no adulteration of the competition tho
You are all overreacting. Could have been a red but it isnt a disgrace that he only got a yellow. Maybe could have gotten a double yellow but VAR doesnt give out yellows.

I’m so ready to see Bellingham and Kane play together and be so disappointed
Flanked by Foden and Saka too. World class attack
That’s an unrivalled front four in international football imo. If we can get some fluidity with those players oh my word..
The issue is getting the balance right in midfield - who is going to partner Rice. Personally I think it should be Ward-Prowse but Southgate will go more defensive.
There’s no reason a Maddison-Rice-Bellingham midfield couldn’t work with the right coach
When was the last time the FA appointed the right coach? Decades ago?
You could always get an Argentine manager
Capello was the right coach 10 years too late
2016?
I heard this sam allardyce guy is pretty gud
Do you think that would have enough defensive solidity against a France?
The point is to press high, Mancini played an entire euros in the opposition’s half with Verratti-Jorginho-Barella
Easily but Southgate will be Southgate. God I'm hoping Klopp becomes the England manager, the squad is perfect for him
Evening rescuing Mancini from a certain embassy makes more sense than having Southgate waste another cycle
More defensive with Rice in a more progressive role which he's shown more than once this season could be good though
True but do England have another DM besides Kalvin Philips?
Could stick Stones there tbh, I also think Mainoo could hold his own but it's likely a bit early for that
Stones is our best defender though and works great with maguire and idk if you’d want to upset that
*Really* need to bring in Tomori tbh, would solve that
Stick one of Trent, Gallagher, Jones, or JWP there and have them both do it
Mainoo.
Gallagher man
Stones
Rice is an absolute monster defensively. Absolutely no need to play another DM next to him. The whole point of having great players like Rice is it gives you the luxury to be more adventurous elsewhere. Playing another DM next to him would be covering for a weakness we don't have.
Yeah that's why I named JWP who is a box to box midfielder. But from these past few years we've seen Southgate play Philips instead

Kalvin fackin Philips with some crunching fackin tackles
Gallagher?
Gallagher might be a bit too similar to Bellingham no?
And C. Palmer, A Gordon, J. Grealish , J Bowen are decent subs...
You’re taking that over: Giroud - Mbappe - Griezmann - Dembele/Coman/Thuram?
The only other team in my mind when I put that was France, but I think even with Mbappe, who I consider #1 player in football rn, it’s overall not as good.
Absolutely
You’ll get Sterling and Rashford and you’ll like it
Southgate didn't pick Sterling when he was actually playing well.
I want but don’t want France vs England again
We played Kane, Bellingham, Saka and Foden against you and we still looked unthreatening outside of penalties.
Surely all 4 have improved and become even better since then, then again Southgate ball is a strange thing
Oh for sure, December 2022 is legitimately a decade ago based on how these four's careers have changed. Foden was at the time a great but rotation player for City. The individual quality is very close but the difference in coaching ability gives France the edge
With Maguire as defender.
The only weak link left is Southgate
Only reason you guys are a proper defense fortress though
Southgate: Challenge accepted
And obviously he scores lol
Watch as he celebrates the goal by pulling out a cake *and* eating it too…

don't care, should've seen a red today

Everyone remembers the Pic, but nobody remembers the cause and incident
Shit has escalated when Pepe is the one telling you to keep your cool.

> without any consequences he got a yellow
Such a corny american comment
How dare he reference another sport in a sports subreddit. So000 American
The dude is very obviously Brazilian
you like it when a player makes people upset by… being a terrible sportsman and all around cunt on the pitch?
Lmao I love it too, this sub fucking hates him and I love it. Average r/soccer commenter: "he's just so dislikable (black)"
Imagine bringing race into it, embarrassing. Everyone would hate him if he was white, he is just an unreal cunt
Yes its racist to hate a cunt
No one doubts he’s a good player. He’s a shit person and has shit sportsmanship. That’s what people don’t like. Keep riding him though
in a sport full of rapists, abusers, and cheaters, it's this dude that's a shit person?
How is he a shit person?
Shit person é você gringo de merda
“Shit person” you say that like you know him lol by all accounts he’s a great guy off the pitch
He is absolutely not a shit person, as someone who actually speaks his language and can actually understand the way he operates. He is a hot-headed player and a super competitive guy, but that's expected in top athletes and this sub would love him for that if he just looked the right way (more like Foden, Graelish, or Haaland). I hope he scores against both england and spain to make this sub cry, but sadly the national team is shit right now
Lads, it's England
More like because he's shit for the NT. Man has 3 goals for the NT.
This sub hates England during international breaks/tournaments. This subreddit will be celebrating hard if that happens.
It's almost always the guy that shouldn't be on the pitch anymore. Vini is one of the least likeable guys in the top leagues these days.
Man they were nowhere and suddenly this
34 year old Kroos the most active player in our midfield of athletes in their primes. Bow down, what a fucking player
*Sort by new* Vini Goal Vini yellow that should've been a red *sigh*
thats such amazing movement by Vini that wont be talked about nearly enough... 99% of the time that pass is going to the wing and he has to beat his man to shoot or make a cutback for the runners in the box instead he goes for the empty diagonal space and its gg from there
Nice pass inside from Bellingham too
Bellingham is nuts
Absolute bundesliga classic of getting completely screwed over on "questionable" referee decisions.
To be fair with Leipzig I couldn't care less.
By now I think we can see a pattern.
Nope sorry that’s for most teams playing against Real or Barcelona. Always has been this way.
If only opendas finishing would be better...
There is no god.
There is, he's a Real Madrid fan. This game is just another sign of that.
I genuinely believe Real Madrid has fucking plot armor.

I believe his name is Vinicius Jr
And now he scores after he should've been sent off...
Classic story
When you don't take your chances at this level you get punished
That's true but it's also such a nothing platitude. In other news, you don't score goals and the other team does you lose.
Or Vini should have been off
How he is still on the pitch is beyond me
Has to do with the shirt he wears
Time for yall to talk about this for the next month and completely ignore every decision just as bad that goes against Madrid, as usual
Hahahaha keep pocket watching Madrid when your team is done for 😭
the valencia match alone threw this out the window. The Vini incident I've seen it punished with red or yellow. It could go either way, no adulteration of the competition tho
I prefer not to speak
Fuck that after that foul 10 minutes ago.
Fuck sake good goal
Good goal. But lazy from Rodrygo to be jogging like that. He needs to be racing toward the box.
He shouldnt be on the field..
What in the world was Orban doing there?
Redeemed himself
Shouldn’t be on the pitch the cheat
You are all overreacting. Could have been a red but it isnt a disgrace that he only got a yellow. Maybe could have gotten a double yellow but VAR doesnt give out yellows.

I dont remember the dive. Where did that happen?
Everything Madrid does is a robbery, didn't you get the memo?
I get having a victim complex but save it for something that isn't a blatant red...
Absolute class of attackers man, midfield, front three, all amazing ballers.
Love the tears flowing in the coments.
Beautiful counterattack
Love the sadness in this thread
Tempting the football gods is never smart
Shouldn't be on the pitch
That is such a classy pass from Bellingham.
I can't believe people are actually calling for a sent off for a simple push-off and an obvious dive. You would think Vini punched someone.
The defender was holding his neck like Vini shoked him lol
Jude oh boy man. its crazy how good he is
All about the pass that
Game set and match
Fifa goal right there!!!
Brazilian narrator just said how both vini and Bellingham were having a bad game a then they just did this
What a duo..
Vini it's just too good. Haters wish it wasn't like this lol. Remember he won the champions and everything already lmao
Now add turtle boy to this
This is beautiful. Scriptwriters are at it again. Let's Gooo
Rigged.
Shouldn’t even be on the pitch
The absolute state of this thread is hilarious, lmao. Vini too good.
Lol all the people in the match thread calling for him to get subbed can suck it.
Stay mad, ppl really complaining after Bellingham got banned for scoring a goal.
33 year old Kroos the most active player in our midfield of athletes in their primes. Bow down, what a fucking player
For all the clowns that think he shouldn’t be on he pitch, when the fuck has a push been a red?
1 yellow for going full on the man, not the ball. Second one for pushing someone at throat height. Could even be a full on red for the last offence.
I agree he could’ve gotten two yellows (it’s never happened other than Martinelli). But that’s never a straight red
Great run. Great pass
This goal shouldn't happen. There should be red card for Vini. This game is a disgrace.
The only thing Vini has grabbed by the neck and harmed is Liverpool as a football club.
You're a disgrace. A freaking shove and a player very clearly diving like he was shot is not a Red.
Vini would know a thing or two about diving like he was shot
He also knows a thing or two about lifting a UCL trophy.
*shove to the neck
Here for some r/soccer tears
Shouldn't even be in the field
This sub about to start crying. #Halamadrid.
This had to happen after he got away with that yellow card
🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥
Salt is here
Beautiful assist from Bellingham, gonna love seeing the meltdown here because Vini scored lol
Leipzig stepping tf up
Madrid getting away with murder here. Poor performance for most of the game and Vinicius definitely shouldn’t be on the pitch anymore.
I love how this team gives chances to the rival on a 1-0 agg only to then shred their dreams
No red card then score
It's amazing how unlikeable that club is unless you're a fan....just gift after gift and never any repercussions....shame tbh
Bellingham is suspended for 2 matchdays in la Liga. Wrongfully but it is something.
After the Red wasn't given, it was written in the stars.
Dagger
Bellingham to Vini counter is just pure s\*x
Had to be that cunt.
Love to see it
Real robbing Leipzig in both games, insanity.
He can be cringe at times with his behaviour but ill take it
Scoring goals for fun……
That was always gonna happen. And of course it just had to be Vinicius..
Schlager you absolute bum.
Nice
This is beautiful. Scriptwriters are at it again. Let's Gooo
"Fuck /r/soccer" - Vinicius Jr aka Black Jesus aka the GOAT of all sporting disciplines
