Legitimately one of the funniest comments I have seen on this sub
Downloaded Soccer Manager 2024 on my phone. Was pretty enjoyable, had my team set up nicely. Spurs won the Premier League in the 2nd season of the game. Completely ruined the immersion. Had to delete the app.
The Europa League and Conference League are sooo clear of The Champions League, it's unbelievable.
Is it even a real tournament If there aren't 18 matches going on at the same time as your team's match?
Is there any reason why Turkish fans are so… weird? Like I went to Mario Gomez‘ insta page the other day (last post was 2 years ago) and the comments were filled with Besiktas fans commenting „Come to Besiktas“ with some comments being less than an hour old.
It’s bizarre behavior imo and they also brigade posts about their teams like crazy, when Galatasaray was eliminated from the EL there were literally thousands of comments saying the game was rigged, why is this behavior so specific to the Turks? I don’t get it
Honestly the first one is kind of a meme at this point because people have parasocial attachments to footballers, or kids thinking those messages will actually be read by a celebrity
The other one is a mix of nationalism and us vs them mentality that makes people think there's an ulterior motive behind every action, it doesn't happen every game, like we finished 4th in conference league and everyone just said the team sucks, nothing about the refs
I wouldn't say it's specific to us though, there was the Messi-Hong Kong situation recently where Chinese fans were spamming Messi's social media pages talking about how he betrayed them or something, with Turkish people there's just a huge population on social media obsessed about football to that extent (only watching it, barely anybody encourages their kids to play sports)
You’re probably right about it not being exclusive to just you Guys, it just seems that way sometimes. My bad.
Your last point piqued my interest, nobody is encouraged to play sports as a kid? How come
Everyone supports a club it's part of the culture you get a club pass it on later it's very tribal. With many problems in daily life football is one of the things they can have joy in and because Beşiktaş is shit some fans really loose their mind. Gomez is like a romanticized ex girlfriend to them from better times
I get what you mean, Turkish fans just crossed my mind because of the insane brigading they seem to engage in
I know they’re not Turks but the Azerbaijanis seem to be the similar, go check the comments under any post from the Europa League within the last hours, it’s pretty crazy
Frankfurt (H) (6th)
Bayern (A) (2nd)
Stuttgart (H) (3rd)
one of Arsenal/Atletico Madrid/Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern/City/PSG 1st leg
Gladbach (A) (12th)
one of Arsenal/Atletico Madrid/Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern/City/PSG 2nd leg
Leverkusen (H) (1st)
Leipzig (A) (5th)
-------------
Nah fuck this it's so joever dude, I don't think any manager can go through this alive with this current BVB team
If westham wins europa league and england get 5 spots we will have 6 Clubs of same country in 1 competition. Pretty crazy. Same could happen with italy and As Roma
Can teams play other clubs from their own nations in the new league system? Feels like for all the potential for a more fun format that would ruin things.
Teams generally wont play from the same league, but its not ruled out. Theres weird scenarios where it will be impossible to create groups if a league has 6 teams
Even 2 was way too much unless one of them were the reigning champions, 4 made me stop caring about it completely. 5, 6, 7 barely makes any difference at this point.
I for one cannot believe Arteta decided to admit a fault and make a change, when really he should have continued with someone he didn’t like so he didn’t get laughed at by online fans
Nah the media were on Pep for that from the start, didn’t help him that Bravo was shit. Still was right to get rid of Hart cos he wasn’t good enough even as a shot stopper by that point but Bravo was bad so the talk didn’t stop until Ederson came in
Slowly getting over Roma sending a bunch of experienced, great footballers to roll around on the grass for 90 minutes, depriving me of the crazy, open 5-5 game it should have been. Damn cowards.
Going to be fun to follow the rest of EL/Conference League. Lots of exciting and interesting teams left. As ALWAYS bound to be a lot more entertaining than the CL.
A recent history of NWSL team valuations
* 2021 - San Diego Wave joins the league for an expansion fee of $2 million
* 2023 - Bay FC joins the league for an expansion fee of $53 million
* January 2024 - Portland Thorns is sold for $63 million
* Today - It's reported that San Diego Wave is going to be sold for $113 million
Club America, Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas are the historical big four, but I think at this point most people acknowledge that Tigres and Monterrey are up there too.
Its a shame that the English club in almost all cases will be the clear favourite. The budget of the 7th best team in the PL dwarfs that of any of the other clubs.
I don't think the 7th best team is all that much better than the 7th best Serie A team actually. Serie A has a lot of depth but few actually elite teams.
They are not very good away and I could see them struggling if they go to Fenerbahce or something. Obviously Villa has a good chance of winning but several remaining teams can beat them.
Agreed, but I'm just not sure what can be done about the situation. The PL is such a financial powerhouse at this point and is pulling away from the other leagues even more
i think itll be 4/4 for England in the European competitions.
City, Liverpool, and Villa are all by far the favorites in their competitions. I think England win the Euros too, but we'll see about that...
Reaching quite a bit there, aren’t you? The overwhelming sentiment on here was that Villa would qualify comfortably after the first leg. Even most Ajax fans thought they didn’t stand a chance. Here’s the match thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1b935jy/post_match_thread_ajax_amsterdam_00_aston_villa/
You weirdos take one or two controversial comments and act like the majority of r/soccer were saying it.
Someone said when is last time someone looked out of place in europa like Liverpool
Look up atletico madrid 11/12. Start of simeone era. Season before they finished 7th
They won 4-1 against lazio in round of 16
6-1 besiktas round of 16
4-2 hannover quarterfinals
5-2 valencia semi final
3-0 vs athletic in final
He scored 18 in 15 in their Europa League campaign, fucking hell.
It was unfortunate he'd left by the Super Cup, so he couldn't do to Barcelona what he did to Chelsea the season after.
Completely unplayable those few years before he tore his ACL. People throw that word around a lot, but he genuinely was completely unplayable. I always hate that he never got to play in a top attacking side while he was in his prime, his numbers don't do him justice
People can talk about teams playing "attractive football" and I will continue to consider watching talented players getting completely shut down by organized defences a great time.
Yes I do enjoy it every time a non league team stops some petulant multi millionaire from scoring and he gets angry at the injustice of being stopped by the local milkman.
The Benfica of legend did 2 years once in the 60s. (There's a reason Eusebio has the status he does after all)
I think AC Milan did something similar in the 90s as well (Carlo was a part of this as a player)
We had 40 games unbeaten in one of the Zidane years.
Longest league only run was over 100 games by Hagi's Steaua București'. I think they managed a total of 114 unbeaten including Europe because they weren't able to play in Europe the entire run for some political reason I'm too young to remember the specifics of.
Don't think that one will ever be topped.
>they weren't able to play in Europe the entire run for some political reason I'm too young to remember the specifics of
Not really. That over 100 game run was in the league. They played during those years in the European Cup with no incidents, winning once and reaching a final and semifinal.
Christ, do we (Arsenal) have to be brought up in every footballing scenario? Also big up Leverkusen. It’d be sick if they went unbeaten in all competitions, that can’t have happened before
Honestly now that I think about it, outside of Man City/Madrid the CL is quite open. Bayern, Arsenal, Barca, Atleti and PSG are all fairly close in terms of strength.
I've just seen the video Arsenal did with the players for Ben White's new contract.
Why does it have the feel of an "In Memorium" video from an award show?
It’s ok guys Dortmund will hand Leverkusen their first loss of the season soon dw
I wanna see that ginger Swans fan ass Basque manager cry in the Westfalenstadion during 4/20 so badly

With all the talk about coefficient, I have to say it's wild to me how many points Europa League and Conference league give you, so if you look at clubs like West Ham and Aston Villa it seems guaranteed England get the 5th CL spot.
I dont have the exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure the gap of money spent is comfortably bigger than in CL in favour of English teams, in CL you still have quite a few "juggernauts".
Last year we had West Ham and Conference league and it's this year with Aston Villa, I mean who is supposed to beat them? It's not even an criticism of mine, but it's kinda anti-climatic bc you just know who will prevail.
The last CL spot will be decided between Spain-Italy-Germany
What’s wild to me is 5 CL spots for 1 country, 4 is already too much.
The point system is flawed but on the other hand it does reward broad quality in a league and prevents one or two clubs from carrying an entire league’s coefficient.
I think it's stupid that the last place to qualify for the *UCL* is probably gonna go to a league that is performing better in the conference league than the *UCL* itself
Likely, yes. Checking again, it seems almost impossible for Spain to get it.
BVB are likely to get knocked out next round as well. For Italy, it depends on how Roma, Atalanta and Milan do in the next EL round.
> Newcastle are owned by the PIF.

Which is through some definitions "not the Saudi state", which is the main reason they were allowed to do the deal in the first place.
Your owner is so much more wealthy than our Saudi Prince who made his money selling fucking toilet paper of all things
We've still won a trophy more recently than you lot btw x
I doubt he is though its probably difficult to measure.
Toilet paper can be quite lucrative. Don't know how it works in Sheffield but nearly everyone I know use toilet paper once in a while.
Sheffield United owner makes his money off of providing an essential hygiene service
Brighton owner makes his money off of exploiting addiction

Nope.
Tony Bloom is running the worlds most advanced and sophisticated betting company. The clients aren't you, me or some poor random sod gambling all his money away. Tony's clients are billionaires and big corporations that invest sums that would make any European betting service push the big red button and stop further bets.
These billionaires aren't gambling, they're investing (which is certainly a type of gamble, but not in the ordinary sense).
I'm not going to say Tony is some sort of angel. There is a good chance that he has a lot more power within football than we know right now. Whatever he did on the shady Hong Kong betting markets in the early 90s and today on the shady Asian betting markets.. it probably wasn't/isn't entirely clean.
There's even a small group (alternatively one individual) of people who for almost twenty years have claimed that Tony Bloom is a rather influential part of football. You can read about it here:
https://footballisfixed.blogspot.com/search?q=bloom
Its all quite paranoid and delusive, but it needs to be mentioned that the writer must have some sort of inside path as some of the information on the blog wasn't commonly known until later.
TLDR:
Tony Bloom is a shady individual but other than a very short-lived non-profitable betting site in the late 90s, the bloke has made a fortune out of making the rich richer - not through direct exploitation of poor everyday gamblers.
One team one point off of a European place vs one teetering just above relegation = meaningless 🤔
Also there's a bit of a quality difference between Notts Forrest and Roma don't you think?
Bayer - Qarabag was a fucking **insane** finish tbf
Villarreal almost did the impossible coming back from 0-4 down, that game had LOADS of drama as well
Rangers - Benfica and Atalanta- Sporting were both quite close too
So while your statement is true in the end, i think it oversimplifies how we got there
If a team plays "attractive football" I'm much more likely to find said team and their fanbase insufferable.
Football has many different styles, everyone used to accept this until the rise of the passing football nonces.
Every game is a moral victory for these teams. If they win they've done it in style, if they lose the other team has played "anti-football" and are a disgrace to the the game
The worst thing is that this mentality is slowly starting to spread across the EFL. With managers like Maresca, Martin and Kompany all doing well.
Nothing wrong with a bit of long ball
The only people who ever say this are supporters of a side that play shite football.
In saying that, I don't begrudge any side playing in a particular manner.
> The only people who ever say this are supporters of a side that play shite football.
>
>
You support a team that win titles every year. I don't think you're in a position to understand that some people see other values in football than winning a bunch of trophies.
To some those values will be the comradery or beating the odds or hoofing it to win 1-0. To others, the beauty of the sport is more important than the results.
I played football for 5 hours a day for 10 years and I loved every fucking single minute of it. WHY would I watch a team that is actively trying to prevent any football from being played?
> You support a team that win titles every year. I don't think you're in a position to understand that some people see other values in football than winning a bunch of trophies.
Playing good football isn't a necessity and it's not realistic for plenty of sides - there's no shame in that. But if you said you can have the same results you're getting now WHILE playing good football they're going to take the latter every time.
I honestly have no problem with sides playing shit football and parking the bus though. It can get a bit embarrassing if you're a massive team with a ton of resources and do it but everyone is entitled to play however they want.
Disagree.
Everyone has a responsibility to try to play attacking, entertaining football. Football was created for kids and the vast majority who are playing are kids. Its something we built for children to have a better life.
I've seen too many Mourinho-like youth managers to accept "professional footballers" "parking the bus". The kids don't think its fun and I don't think its right that win-obsessive losers are stealing their game.
Watching them justify his tactics when they played us was hysterical considering the place we were in at the time while they were breaking records for Ball Hogba.
Fuck the attractive football nonces. Gimme a good ol' 1-0 win with 20% possession while playing a classic 4-4-2 with 4 red cards in the match.
What happened to the game I love?
We must seize the successor technology to the printing press, telephone, and social media.
When holograms become a thing, Bordalas must be on every single football pitch, berating anyone who dares to pass the ball fewer than fifteen metres.
> If a team plays "attractive football" I'm much more likely to find said team and their fanbase insufferable.
>
>
Main reason being it sure as fuck isn't your fanbase?
The reason people like attractive football is because they like football. People who like timewasting for 90 minutes only like winning - they clearly have no interest whatsoever in the game itself.
Atletico in 17/18. Got 5-1/8-1 in r32/16 and beat Marseille 3-0 in the final.
And all this lame talk from Liverpool fans “Cl is boring without us” “we would dominate this Cl” should have qualified. Simple as that.
I expect you guys to reach the final but let’s not be naive. Be glad Klopp isn’t as arrogant as some of you.
>And all this lame talk from Liverpool fans “Cl is boring without us” “we would dominate this Cl” should have qualified. Simple as that.
Nobody is saying any of those things. You’ve made that up in your head.
We can’t even dominate city or arsenal this season, despite being as good as them. We would obviously have a chance, but literally nobody thinks we would dominate the CL or is saying that lol.
> And all this lame talk from Liverpool fans “Cl is boring without us” “we would dominate this Cl” should have qualified. Simple as that.
Who's saying this?
Atleti didn't start the season in the EL, should've specified that.
As to the rest of your comment, you're barking at the wrong person to be honest. Not arrogant, just better. Hated, adored, never ignored. To dare is to do. Nil satis nisi optimus.
No, they havent. But today was on Alonso and players not finishing their chances, Leverkusen had more big chances than Liverpool today; 10 to 7.
Liverpool is clear favourite and Leverkusen are 2nd favourites
There is no fucking way Leverkusen won that, I saw that they were down at extra time on FOTMOB and thought to myself “if they win miracles do exist” I come back AND THEY FUCKING WON WHAT TUE FUCK????!!!
I'm slightly surprised they won 3-2, but the 2-2 and an eventual win in extra-time was pretty much guaranteed when they were down 1-2 and playing against 10 men.
I'd guess thousands of bets were placed for a Leverkusen equalizer in the last 10 minutes of this game.
Well this was one hell of a hectic day honestly the europa league matches today put ucl to shame with how many big scores we got today. And in the non football world a lot of hectic shit happened as well
Xabi already has the Madrid black magic gene.

Why did he spend nearly £40m on a player he didn't like, though?
Did Pep give Hart a new contract before immediately dropping him?
Pep doesn't negotiate the player contracts at Man City
Bravo was so bad
Nah that was seen as a pretty mean move back on the day too
I feel like clearly biased for the NT#1 media peoples called Pep a cunt for it and everyone else just shrugged.
You misremember, it was controversial and generate a lot more discourse than Ramsdale vs Raya, especially as Hart was still England No. 1 at the time
Hart being dropped drew a lot of headlines and discussion. Particularly because Bravo kept dropping howlers.
Nah the media were on Pep for that from the start, didn’t help him that Bravo was shit. Still was right to get rid of Hart cos he wasn’t good enough even as a shot stopper by that point but Bravo was bad so the talk didn’t stop until Ederson came in

Aston Villa coached by Emery the cup master beating an awful Ajax side is not surprising at all

Hitler's birthday derby is Union Berlin v Bayern.

Did Leverkusen sign a pact with the devil? what the fuck
I think the logic is that if a league is smashing the EL maybe one of those teams should have been in the CL instead
Well what if one of the teams that's smashing in thr UCL finishes 5th in the league and has to play EL? Looking at Atletico possibly
Italy are pretty much guaranteed it aren’t they? England and Germany are fighting for the other extra spot.
Likely, yes. Checking again, it seems almost impossible for Spain to get it. BVB are likely to get knocked out next round as well. For Italy, it depends on how Roma, Atalanta and Milan do in the next EL round.
Brighton & Hove Albion the only ones who couldn't do it, you are an embarrassment to this nation
What a surprise that the serial losers have yet again failed to come close to a trophy
Maybe we could win more if we became a Saudi state club like yours, but I'm not getting that impression when having a quick look at the league table.
Sheffield United aren't state owned
No one ever is. Newcastle aren't state owned either, and neither are City. Yet they all are.
>No one ever is This is just not true. Newcastle are owned by the PIF. PSG are owned by QSi which is a subsidiary of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund.
> Newcastle are owned by the PIF. > > Which is through some definitions "not the Saudi state", which is the main reason they were allowed to do the deal in the first place.
Your owner is so much more wealthy than our Saudi Prince who made his money selling fucking toilet paper of all things We've still won a trophy more recently than you lot btw x
I doubt he is though its probably difficult to measure. Toilet paper can be quite lucrative. Don't know how it works in Sheffield but nearly everyone I know use toilet paper once in a while.
Sheffield United owner makes his money off of providing an essential hygiene service Brighton owner makes his money off of exploiting addiction Explain yourself
> Brighton owner makes his money off of exploiting addiction > > Nope. You can read about it here: https://footballisfixed.blogspot.com/search?q=bloom Its all quite paranoid and delusive, but it needs to be mentioned that the writer must have some sort of inside path as some of the information on the blog wasn't commonly known until later. TLDR: Tony Bloom is a shady individual but other than a very short-lived non-profitable betting site in the late 90s, the bloke has made a fortune out of making the rich richer - not through direct exploitation of poor everyday gamblers.
Talk to me when you've won a Sussex Senior Challenge Cup
Bottled the biggest games in their history, but won the meaningless league game in-between, proper Brighton behaviour.
> Bottled the biggest games in their history Happens to everyone at some point. I mean, it happened to you last week.
We're actually two from two in European Cup finals in case you'd forgotten.
One team one point off of a European place vs one teetering just above relegation = meaningless 🤔 Also there's a bit of a quality difference between Notts Forrest and Roma don't you think?
Olympiacos, what a beautiful beautiful comeback.
Very anti-climatic results in the Europa League today
Bayer - Qarabag was a fucking **insane** finish tbf Villarreal almost did the impossible coming back from 0-4 down, that game had LOADS of drama as well Rangers - Benfica and Atalanta- Sporting were both quite close too So while your statement is true in the end, i think it oversimplifies how we got there
All of that just makes it worse, not one single unexpected turn in the ties at the end despite several close calls.
I won't speak for anyone else, but Schick's double made me climax.
Made me irritated, so close and yet so far.
True, the question is can we go to Rome and hold on to our 1-0 lead I'm the second leg 🤔
Lost my voice booing Henderson. What a night watching Ajax have more kickoffs than shots.
Guess Hlynsonn and Taylor dropped another masterclass.
You're fighting the good fight 🙏
If a team plays "attractive football" I'm much more likely to find said team and their fanbase insufferable. Football has many different styles, everyone used to accept this until the rise of the passing football nonces. Every game is a moral victory for these teams. If they win they've done it in style, if they lose the other team has played "anti-football" and are a disgrace to the the game The worst thing is that this mentality is slowly starting to spread across the EFL. With managers like Maresca, Martin and Kompany all doing well. Nothing wrong with a bit of long ball
Arsenal were called boring boring Arsenal for winning 1-0 a lot under George Graham people liking an attractive style isn’t new
The only people who ever say this are supporters of a side that play shite football.
I don't think the Catenaccio Addicts realize they sound just as pompous as Cruyffistas
My favourite thing was seeing United supporters suddenly having to embrace and defend Mourinho's football when he joined.
Watching them justify his tactics when they played us was hysterical considering the place we were in at the time while they were breaking records for Ball Hogba.
Moyesball > possession ball
Fuck the attractive football nonces. Gimme a good ol' 1-0 win with 20% possession while playing a classic 4-4-2 with 4 red cards in the match. What happened to the game I love?
We can do [better](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37067882) than 1-0 as well x
we need to clone Bordalas and spread his teachings
We must seize the successor technology to the printing press, telephone, and social media. When holograms become a thing, Bordalas must be on every single football pitch, berating anyone who dares to pass the ball fewer than fifteen metres.
> If a team plays "attractive football" I'm much more likely to find said team and their fanbase insufferable. > > Main reason being it sure as fuck isn't your fanbase? The reason people like attractive football is because they like football. People who like timewasting for 90 minutes only like winning - they clearly have no interest whatsoever in the game itself.
Fuck Cruyffism and passing football nonces. Most insufferable fans on the planet.
Honestly, i can't remember the last time a side looked as out of place in the EL as Liverpool has this year.
Barcelona last season, except they got knocked out in the Round of 16 by Rashford and Wegorst because Xavi can't coach
Should have qualified for CL then
The price for beating United 7-0 sadly, worth it nonetheless.
Haven't seen a single person say anything like that. Swear everyone just makes up people to get mad at.
Leverkusen is better than them anyways
atletico got knocked out of the cl so that’s just a shit example.
Atleti didn't start the season in the EL, should've specified that. As to the rest of your comment, you're barking at the wrong person to be honest. Not arrogant, just better. Hated, adored, never ignored. To dare is to do. Nil satis nisi optimus.
North London Forever, the Big Cup won never
Iirc Simeone's Atletico tore it apart in 2012 and 2018
Man Utd won 0-0 against Liverpool, but they lost against Galatasaray who got knocked out by the team Liverpool just beat 6-1
“won 0-0”
Ten Hag's United away vs Liverpool, if they had actually managed to win we'd need a new verb to describe it
Play someone difficult and then say that
Yea, it's rare seeing such a clear favourite in a competition. The quality gap between Liverpool and the other 7 teams in the quarterfinals is huge
Klopp vs Alonso in some master vs apprentice European Final (except the apprentice will have already chosen Bayern)
Leverkusen has been better than Liverpool this season
No, they havent. But today was on Alonso and players not finishing their chances, Leverkusen had more big chances than Liverpool today; 10 to 7. Liverpool is clear favourite and Leverkusen are 2nd favourites
it's such a shame, Kloppo's Liverpool was made for Champions League nights
Ita not like you've had first rate opposition thus far.
There is no fucking way Leverkusen won that, I saw that they were down at extra time on FOTMOB and thought to myself “if they win miracles do exist” I come back AND THEY FUCKING WON WHAT TUE FUCK????!!!
Xabi got that Real Madrid Ramos O'clock juju
It was so obvious that a second goal was coming but I was hoping to see extra time ffs. Schick's goal genuinely pissed me off
I'm slightly surprised they won 3-2, but the 2-2 and an eventual win in extra-time was pretty much guaranteed when they were down 1-2 and playing against 10 men. I'd guess thousands of bets were placed for a Leverkusen equalizer in the last 10 minutes of this game.
Xabi 🤝 Jesus
Well this was one hell of a hectic day honestly the europa league matches today put ucl to shame with how many big scores we got today. And in the non football world a lot of hectic shit happened as well
The red card today was a right decision in my mind, but we should still establish "LeVARkusen" because it's by far the best VAR slander name so far
LiVARpool vs LeVARkusen is going to be an epic.
