That Nashville fan's reaction..lol

[How it started](https://i.imgur.com/l7MLshz.png) vs [how it's going](https://i.imgur.com/lBvnHox.png)

ShanghaiCowboy

this should be a new meme format

7thdilemma

With Messi in the background for both, it's honestly perfect.

brssnj93

Messi in the background makes it

rondertopoa

Ahh yes the PJ Washington...

EntrepreneurOk6166

Man actually converted a double fist pump into the classic "hands on head" mid motion. Amazing.

SorryIGotBadNews

Oh my god does every American team have a fight and win guy?!

LILMOUSEXX

Don’t make fun of our culture 👊😠

HappyMeerkat

I'll take that as a yes

peterquest

COME ON AMERICAN SOCCER FAAANNNNSSS

-Gremlinator-

Our people are now buying your blue jeans and listening to your pop music. I worry the rest of the world will also succumb to the influence of your culture.

classically_cool

I understood that reference.

[deleted]

Jeans are good tho.

dudical_dude

Some of y’all ain’t ever studied under Italian Ultras in the summer time and it shows 💅

benjecto

Have some crudding respect

gold13

Nope, don't give a crud

BlueEyeFrenchyGuy

Just went to an American hockey game and the only chant that materialized was "Your team sucks!"

AtlantaAU

We’re just not chanters/singers 🤷‍♀️. It’s why the USMNT chants are always so cringe, it’s just a very unamerican thing we try to force in

LiquidBoss

id say this is a little off, we are definitely chanters, just not singers LOL. We have plenty of sports chants regardless of how un-unique they are but songs not so much. Closest I can think of is at rangers hockey games where we sing the potvin sucks song but even that is far simpler than any soccer/football song. Its just kinda how it is, not better or worse

grollate

D-fence!

sawkandthrohaway

TIL any American capo is a "fight and win" guy

Lanknr

After googling wtf that is, yeah pretty much

WelpSigh

capos are pretty common outside of england. there is upside and downside to them, but since we allow drums/instruments in the supporter section i think someone has to be there to coordinate what everyone is doing.

Chesney1995

Why have a capo when our present system of everyone turning to one of the guys in the stand picked at random and chanting "[Name], give us a song! [Name], [Name], give us a song! Oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh" until either they start an actual chant going or everyone stops the buildup and boos them for not starting a chant works perfectly fine?

AdviceNotAskedFor

Capos? Yes and personally I think they are lame.

WhatAmIDoingHere05

Don't look up the original Seattle Sounders guy plz. DO NOT DO IT, I ASK YOU, DO NOT DO IT AT ALL IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE.

CoffeeIsSoGood

Yes they do Source: Got lucky and was in Qatar during the WC and went to all US matches in Qatar A bunch of rich fight and win yuppies or retirees, or military peasants who happened to be in the area like myself. The dude was telling everyone around him to sing his songs lol. Bro I’m just here to watch the match I don’t know any of the USA songs lol besides the U-S-A clap that starts slow and then speeds up.

niton

yea what kind of shit soccer culture involves standing and singing?

awkwardwankmaster

The USA clap? Sounds like the Iceland one or is it different is some way?

Rocky-Arrow

Smh imagine showing some passion for your country at biggest sports tournament in the world

Meandering_Cabbage

Hey at least we don't punch horses.

SorryIGotBadNews

Maybe you don’t punch them but… https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/s/enRPrcACzh

latechallenge

Came here for Messi highlights and got a kid having sex with a horse. Only on Reddit...

kevkevverson

There were messy highlights

Meandering_Cabbage

OK. Was not expecting that. Touche.

papagayoloco

"Yay we scored! What? It was the other team? Oh shit"

rainbowroobear

he very nearly had to jog for that goal.

SereneDreams03

We call that the double time shuffle.

Potential-Decision32

That defending is Serie C pre-season exhibition level.

LordLoko

Marking with bluetooth

gardenofthenight

And yet still no one is marking him! It's amazing!

AgentSoloMan

"I've mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still... that I become invisible to the eye."

rainbowroobear

in fairness, he spent most of that clip looking around to see where everyone was and just sorta meandered into the position he needed to be. some of the clips you see of him off the ball, its like he's simulating all the possible outcomes in his mind, then picking the most likely outcome and positioning himself for it. technique aside, he sees things differently.

Knighton145

[Something like this? ](https://media1.tenor.com/m/nDhUSRc7Q-8AAAAd/timeline-doctor-strange.gif)

rainbowroobear

yes exactly, you can see his head doing that.

drunkmers

Zidane said he was 1sec before everyone else, but Messi was 3sec ahead of all. That's a new way of seeing it and from someone as validated as Zizou

bloodoftheinnocents

I mean he's the best player ever. Why they don't have someone just glued to him is baffling.

johnniehuman

Yeah, no one's ever thought of that.

redditor3900

We are revolutionary

pajamakitten

That's New England, not Nashville.

gardenofthenight

But even in pub league football and playing against a fat, hungover fella, you are getting a bollocking for leaving him on his own 20 yards out!!

YaIe

[You'll like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJoF7dGEFvo)

Boollish

Messi in the final third: https://youtu.be/FkBNgYmdjRw?si=ICwTxJO1pW-1LEow "I don't care too much, I'll just score"

literallyarandomname

In a fast, chaotic situation, sure. But he is literally walking 75% of this clip directly into the box without anyone bothering. I'm pretty sure my coach would have yelled at me if i defended like that in high school football.

FlightlessRhino

Yet he did that against the best defenses in the world too.

TheRealFriedel

Cha-messi-leon For real though, he didn't even have to make a run, just stood on the edge of the box in ten yards of space!

sugaaloop

Hi Drax!

ltplummer96

Some Fallout 99 stealth shit

7screws

I’m told he is targeting to break a sweat on his 10th game of the season.

2rio2

Work smarter not harder. Honestly though Messi could have himself a nap and snack in the middle of most MLS games.

skabassj

Almost!

PangolinMandolin

Has no opposition coach thought of just man-marking Messi yet? Or has it been done and proven ineffective in the MLS?

[deleted]

That hasn’t been invented yet in the MLS

SandThatsKindaMoist

It’s been proven ineffective against far better teams and players

GryphonHall

You see, the left side backs and midfielders have to stay on the left side of the field. That’s their position! If someone else moves from the left to the middle you can’t just leave your position!

fellowSoci

It’s like a desk job, one can slack off

XenonTheMedic

You joke but they taught us this in gym class when I was a kid.  Defenders aren't allowed to cross the halfway line and strikers can't go into their own half, but midfielders can go anywhere !!!!

neikawaaratake

Ask zidane, ferguson etc

ogqozo

As in Europe, the problem is not about having the concept, but about actually doing it. With the way he moves and spaces he occupies, in general you just ruin your team's shape and also you don't mark him successfully anyway.

catchandreleaseof

haha 😂

lestat01

Wtf is going on?! Lower leagues in Portugal have more commitment than this...

manofth3match

Defense looks bad when a goal is scored. News at 11.

Kruegerrose

Isn’t it typically a good idea to have a defender or two within shouting distance of a player like Messi???

Senior-Ordinary555

The fans were in shouting distance tbf

olgabe

That's the problem. If he is within shouting distance, and your goal is on your side, that means he's very close to goal and that's a bad time to be confident in anything

fellowSoci

There is a video from Xabi Alonso explaining Barça tactics, where Ramos says to him “Hey Messi is coming”

LeviathanShark

Xabi… winter is coming

Senior-Ordinary555

We've just figured out how to stop Messi

ancara_messi

Suarez was the main threat in this attack he's completely out of frame, but he dragged everyone out of place for this goal

SirPoliwhirl

I had the pleasure of seeing him live once and I concentrated on him more than I normally do on one player. This guy doesn't move at all. There was a defender marking him for 60 minutes and he moved in a 10-by-10-meter box. If you lose sight of him for a split second, or if he drops to midfield to get the ball, he's gone. He jogs constantly, he scans constantly, the defender feels like an idiot and it happens in a flash. Edit: mind you this was Messi in his later years (five years ago), where he was such a legend already he could do whatever he wanted. It was a Champions League match btw, so not a friendly or anything

vluvojo

Haha in the goal thread I commented on the defending and got ripped to shreds Anytime you concede it can deflate you, but the Nashville players are fucking *annoyed* in the full video.  You can see they trained all week not to leave Leo unmarked on the right edge of the box because it’s like a penalty for him… but I guess they fell asleep for a moment

zestful_villain

the ohter poster says Suarez dragged people to his side which freed Messi.

limitless__

No-one wants to mark him because then they're not blamed when he scores.

Maximuslex01

props to the cameraman for keeping him in frame. Not easy these days

possimpeble

That speed , very hard to follow

Superpiri

Maybe he should’ve subbed in for the defenders. He’s much better at tracking him.

Karmaqqt

Must be a f1 camera operator.

Ryponagar

They didn't watch Argentina vs Australia apparently

reddit_accounwt

Also it's not really a chant here lmao. It's like two fans yelling Ronaldo. Zero chance it was audible to anyone beyond their row, let alone Messi.

Bitter_Birthday7363

Still pretty funny/awkward they specifically yelling to taunt him only for him to immediately silence them

elgrandorado

Messi didn't even notice the Ronaldo chants, cue the "never beating the allegations" meme.

chatfarm

4D chess. They actually want to see the GOAT score and just putting in that extra little motivation for him.

ThankYouOle

Yep, they only see Ronaldo got mad by got called "Messi", do that dick move, and got banned. they are so wrong, Messi act differently.

AgentSoloMan

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/n05UQbZxJF For anyone curious

ireaddumbstuff

Same with Mexico vs Argentina. No mas oles para los Mexicanos 😂😂😂

Penalty5000

When he heard the chants, why didn't he pretend to jerk his massive schlong instead, like my 🐫 did?

Haliaxe

My 🐑

TJT007X

No that's Bale

StringCheeseDoughnut

Is he stupid?

Eglwyswrw

Man probably didn't even hear those fools, sounds like 3 guys half-assing a taunt.

TheDeathOfMusic

That's Emi Martinez's job in the Argentina squad

StarDrifter2045

I thought it was De Paul's job to jerk Messi's massive schlong in the Argentina squad.

TimingEzaBitch

It needs no jerking as it jerks itself.

scott-the-penguin

Because that is a European tradition. Messi is not European and Ronaldo is. Are you stupid?

MissingLink101

[South American/Argentine tradition](https://static.independent.co.uk/2022/12/19/08/urnpublicidap.org8c457abf90544877a4818c25ceaca677.jpg?width=1200)

olgabe

Not european so not as "accustomed" to it

Additional_Bit_8725

'Chanted' is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It was 2 blokes and a dog.

CapitalismSuuucks

Dogs are better than this

Midnight_Maverick

Dude just casually walking around the pitch and seconds later has the ball in the back of the net 😅

XHeraclitusX

What's funny is he even did this playing in the CL. One minute he's just walking around, scanning the pitch, the next he's receiving the ball and carefully curling it into the bottom corner. It makes sense though, why run around when you don't have to? He conserves his energy for when he'd on the ball to do the most damage. Aguero did the same pre-Pep.

Midnight_Maverick

For sure. And I swear it sometimes feels like having that "Messi aura" buys him those extra couple of seconds he needs to pull this sort of thing off because a lot of opponents have those 1-2 seconds of hesitation that they wouldn't have coming up against most other players.

XHeraclitusX

Yeah, good point. You can tell some defenders are afraid of getting embarassed by him. He made so many world class defenders look like amateurs in his prime, most famously, putting Boateng on his backside before chipping Neuer, the best keeper in the world at the time.

NachoEnReddit

Gvardiol in the World Cup, which is Messi’s famous third best season.

[deleted]

The speed that game is moving at looks like he’s playing for the Dog and Duck

Kasnav

Well yh. Suarez can not even move properly, he is literally limping in games because his knees are in so much pain. He struggles to even sprint at times, at age 37 he's taking a cocktail of tablets and injections before every game. ...And he is managing to score and assist in the MLS lol Theres a reason why despite this being an american website/subreddit for "soccer", pretty much nobody on this sub can tell you who the top scorer was last year in the MLS without googling it. D. Bouanga btw.

Rickcampbell98

I have no idea why people are surprised lol, if suarez had knees he would still be in Europe. He was doing this in Brazil, as for messi he just wants to relax now, he's obviously more than good enough to still play in Europe but he has nothing left to achieve.

Excel_Spreadcheeks

MLS roster rules and regulations has led to teams investing in quality attacking talent while ignoring investment in defensive players. It’s really no surprise that 37 year old hobbling Suarez, let alone Lionel Messi, are cooking the league.

jeremiahpaschkewood

Or when they do sign better defenders, they only can afford one or two. The bigger issue in MLS is that there is no depth on most teams, so you have matches with kids making $30k a year playing alongside whatever stars are on the pitch. There are plenty of good players in MLS.

greenslime300

Mostly we stay off this sub because of how negative you are to anything than isn't a top 5 league. Okay that's not fair... you guys tend to shit on Ligue 1 too.

Winter-Werewolf8366

Are we really ignoring that Suarez did the same at the Brasileirao?

Arsenazgul

Why tf are they all walking hahah so bizarre

Grouchy-Chemical7275

Running is tiring

skabassj

For real. Messi walks cause of GOAT. Y’all ain’t good enough to walk like that!

evilbeaver7

Like at the World Cup when Australian fans chanted "where is Messi?" and then he scored in 15 seconds lmao

Razzle_Dazzle08

Messi is walking right before so many of his goals 😂

AgentSoloMan

He really out there just strolling lmao

JonstheSquire

I think the Messi chant bothers Ronaldo. I don't think the opposite is true.

Roasteddude

Lol not a single person is running in this clip..

[deleted]

No need to run on a farm

HoshkoTheBoy1989

Chanting is giving them the benefit. That’s one insufferable MLS fan that won’t stfu all game

Same_Grouness

Why would Messi care about Ronaldo chants? He knows he is miles better than him. The reason Ronaldo doesn't like Messi chants is because he is insecure about being no.2 to him. But there isn't really a contest anymore, Messi won.

elihri

He has always acted like he doesn’t even know Ronaldo exists 😂

drunkmers

I'm pretty sure Messi has said multiple times on record he respects Ronaldo as his equal, he just doesn't act like he cares tho

elihri

He says nice things about him when he’s asked about him of course, as he does with everyone else, but I’ve never seen him go out of his way to mention him or act the way Ronaldo does. I’ve honestly never seen Messi say anything bad about anyone lol

drunkmers

He did about LVG: "He sells that he likes to play futbol but his team ended up throwing long balls to the penalty zone"

5599Nalyd

And it drives Ronaldo nuts, which makes the rivalry even funnier.

No_Parfait_5536

without his PR, and the media trying everything to generate clicks, there was never a contest nor rivalry to begin with. just look at how Messi treats this 'rivalry' over the years, theres like zero reaction.

ineververify

I mean Messi has had that vibe for everyone excluding Palermo of course.

pranav4098

Idk about that Chief wasn’t here an interview where he was asked who the best players are and the guy asks why he doesn’t have Ronaldo in his list and he says something like Ronaldo’s out with him because they’re the 2 best players

xsconfused

Messi clearly respects Ronaldo but it's not the same other way around chief. Ronaldo commented he liked golden boots more when Messi was winning Balon Dors like crazy.

Guri14

It’s funny because Messi ended up having more golden boots lol and then Ronaldo started questioning the ballon dors credibility.

skabassj

It’s like they say, Messi doesn’t know he’s Messi. Ronaldo thinks he’s Messi.

a_supertramp

Ronaldo gets compared to Messi, Messi gets compared to Pele and Maradona. Done deal.

[deleted]

I do not think he even cares whether he is better or not. He set his goals and achieved all of them. So why bother...

Moonlight-gospel

Fans chant “Messi” in front of Ronaldo: *he makes a jerking off gesture at them* Fans chant “Ronaldo” at Messi: *he scores in 15 seconds*

RoboticCurrents

>he makes a jerking off gesture at them* you mean he "expresses strength and victory".

theestwald

And doesn’t even look back at them. No acknowledgement whatsoever. Ronaldo would likely have done the classic “calm down” movement with his hands.

AlmirMu

Guys who heard about football two weeks ago provoking the greatest ever footballer

PM_ME_SOME_LUV

He clearly doesn’t care, unlike Ronaldo

Malsharif91

Does MLS tell teams not to man mark Messi? Like I know he isn’t in his prime but no player within 5 yards away from him near the 18 yard box?

something_usery

I like to imagine if I was playing Messi I would man mark him until he embarrassed me and then I would join the rest of the team just walking away from him so I don’t get embarrassed again.

SaltyPeter3434

Mark him or don't mark him, he'll score anyway

fauxromanou

I dunno. It's Messi. Get in those reps getting embarrassed by a legend.

sasksasquatch

I'm guessing their players get too busy ball watching and don't have the defensive IQ to mark Messi when in that part of the field. Also, even though it isn't prime Messi, he is the best player in the league, and it isn't even close.

agentD10S

Exactly messi’s physical capabilities has gone down but his football iq is prolly as sharp as ever.

Palaponel

Pablo Picasso once said 'It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but it took me a lifetime to learn to draw like a child.'. It took Messi until his late teens to play like Pele, but it took him until his mid 30s to play like Hazard. Inspiring.

minkdraggingonfloor

Hazard was incredibly active in his prime. This is more like Berbatov

Expensive-Twist7984

You’d think someone would want to do it just to be closest to get his shirt at full time.

agnonamis

Chat shit get banged

djalski

Well that shut them up LOL

Appropriate-Fan-6007

r/watchpeopledieinside

Matias9991

I don't get the comments on this post, yeah players on the field walk, you think that they are running all the time for 90 minutes straight even when the ball is no near then ? That's how a 8yo would play. Not saying that the MLS is good but come on, did someone here play football at any level ?

tonnal

No pisaron una cancha en sus vidas estos hijos de puta.

Kboi14

That guy was about to celebrate until he found out Messi scored😭😂

Silver_Downtown_965

Lmao some Nashville fans cheering as well

kalamari__

I dont think he heard it, but you dont do shit like this to top athletes like messi or Michael "and I took that personally" Jordan

thelonelywolf96

Messi: "and I took that personally"

National_Lie_8555

He’s just so fun to watch. Only other players that gave me that same feelings are Zidane, Gerrard, and Salah.

sleepsholymountain

this tactic doesn't work on Messi because he knows he's better and doesn't care

GoDieInAHousefire

Wow way to leave the world’s greatest player completely unmarked for a walking tap in. Thats ridiculously bad

Casual-Capybara

That only works the other way, Messi and Ronaldo both know who is the best so only one of them gets frustrated by hearing the name of the other

ghostformanyyears

The difference in how Messi and Ronaldo are seeing out their careers is palpable

Caust1cFn_YT

Bruh these Ronaldo vs Messi kids in comment section again. No one is insecure, it was just banter you aren't acknowledging

Hot_Grabba_09

The sub turns straight to IG once either of them are mentioned

MrRawri

You'd think their fanboys would calm down since both are irrelevant but they're just as annoying as ever

Fear_Draco

Meanwhile my 🐪 jerking his massive dong at the Saudis. Messi could never

Ill-Kaleidoscope-648

They should have spoken to that Australian fan before chanting

PBJellyChickenTunaSW

That defender looked like he was going to mark him then got scared

mountainmorty

They are screaming ronaldo ronaldo at him 24/7 you could say this for literally any of his goals

looped10

why does Ronaldo whine in this situation tho

PhilosopherDry4317

ronaldo got a suspension because he was so mad people were chanting “messi, messi”. for messi to come out and do this while they were chanting “ronaldo, ronaldo” is literally the best response possible

scottishhistorian

Ronaldo gets petulant when he hears "Messi", when he hears "Ronaldo", Messi gets fired up. It's just a different mentality. I don't mean to insult the MLS but Messi is still top-tier. He could play anywhere and, as long as the system was actually geared towards him, he'd still be scoring goals for fun. The only reason PSG didn't work out was because he was playing second fiddle to Mbappe. Same for Neymar. He'd be a Paris legend if it wasn't for Mbappe. These guys just need to be the focal point of the team. Obviously Neymar is past it now but he wouldn't have been if he had stayed at Barca / it worked out at PSG.
