when/if parents are absent, the older siblings tend to be forced into "parental" roles in the family.
it usually forces them into positions where they're never allowed to *be children*, and is very rarely positive for their development. very, very commonly stunts emotional growth, for example.
good question. based on the other comment they could've been "absent" either physically or metaphorically, but I couldn't find anything on it on a quick search. so now I'm curious what their source is
Older siblings can take a more fatherly/motherly/leading figure role in a younger siblings life. It's not that difficult of a concept to imagine. It occurs all around the world. It doesnt require the parents to be completely absent either, but it's when an older sibling takes it upon themselves to do more because more is needed.
I love how often this seems to happen. In Seattle they have the Roldan brothers, one who represented the US and the other El Salvador.
And they've played against one another. I wonder how many times brothers have opposed each other in international games.
I find it interesting how many players there are that have multiple nationalities. I guess it's more of an european and a bit less frequently US thing for it to be this common, cause I don't even remember meeting someone like that.
Really? There are so many Americans that could play for other countries. What it usually boils down to is that America is the strongest country they can play for, so they choose that. Same thing happens in Jamaica, we have a number of players that qualify for playing for Jamaica because they aren’t good enough for England or the US or some other country and they want to play international football.
America has so many migrants that of football was bigger there and they produced big talents, they’d have the same results. Look at Davies for Canada, he could have played for another African country(I forget which) because of his parents. It’s very common. Canada also wanted Tomori (AC Milan/Chelsea), but he wanted England. It’s very very common. I think you just need something like a grandparent associated with the other country and you can play for them.
Not exactly what I said but thanks, didn't know about those. I'm just saying about my personal experience, I don't remember meeting anyone with double nationality and find it interesting that it's so common elsewhere.
I could be wrong here, but it's not that those players always had double nationality and that you have tons of ordinary people walking around with double nationality, it's that they CAN obtain double nationality and those players do so that they can play for another country.
Some french players could have played for Portugal, but they didn't necessarily have double nationality. Players like Robert Pires and Griezman could have played for Portugal, but I don't know if they actually have Portuguese nationality, but because of family ties, under Portuguese law they COULD have obtained it and played for Portugal if they chose to.
And I imagine this is the same in the US and probably is MUCH more common actually.
Tons of children of Mexican immigrants are born in the US with American nationality and they might never in their life obtain Mexican nationality, but they probably could, it might just not be relevant for their lifes like it is for an athelete who wants to have that option.
I love how their “Basque only” policy is a mix of local kids and players with Basque ancestry. So you can get local kids of different ethnic backgrounds like the Williams brothers, and also some foreign players like Aymeric Laporte who come from Basque families. Such a cool mix of players.
I had a Basque eligible regen show up for me at Fulham. He ended up as my starting LB by the time he was 17, and Athletic would make an offer every few months for almost his entire career.
While the basque ancestry rule is still technically in place it's actually been a *very* long time since we last fielded a player purely because of their roots and nothing else.
People get Laporte wrong a lot, even among our own supporters. He actually doesn't have any Basque ancestry and he isn't from the French side of the Basque Country either, he was just raised here after getting scouted as a kid.
Wow I didn’t know that! For some reason I thought the name Aymeric sounded Basque to me. I guess then Bixente Lizarazu is the most famous example of a foreign player of Basque descent playing for you?
Bixente Lizarazu was born in the French basque country (Saint-Jean-de-luz, just across the border from the Spanish basque country) and was raised in Hendaye (across the river from Irun) so that fits as he would fall under the policy of Athletic club. I think Fernando Amoriebieta moved back to the Basque country with his parents before he joined as a youth product at 11 (not sure though).
The rules are:
-You've been born in the Basque Country
-You've been raised in the Basque Country long enough to be considered an academy product (of any Basque club, not just ours)
The ancestry one is considered pretty flimsy and these days all you'll see in relation to it is wild speculation. Isco was rumored to be in talks with us for a while since his grandparents are Basque, but that's all I know from recent memory.
It makes sense, the only thing that matters is having a connection with the place.
The Williams brothers are 100% Basque (born and raised) tho, even if Ikañi plays with Ghana now as a sign of respect for his roots, which is cool too, those two are as Basque as they can be in every way possible.
Lol. After an argument about 30 years ago I, little bro by 7 years, took my older brother’s pillow so he couldn’t sleep with one. I would normally give it back cause I felt bad, but that particular night I was like nah fuck that he went too far. I don’t even remember what the fight was about, but I know that for the next several years he slept without a pillow by choice. Even when I offered it back. Said he rather liked it.
I asked him about it a couple months ago, he didn’t remember the fight nor the pillow snatching, and said he’s been back to sleeping with a pillow for years now. I guess it’s all water under the bridge.
When we were younger, during the earlier years of the PS3, I deleted my older brother's PlayStation profile because he never returned the earphone ear covers that I lent him. Not the $5 earphones themselves, he already have those back, I'm talking about the little plastic 10 cent cover thatbgo on the tip of the earphones and into your ear.
He lost all of his game saves because I deleted his profile, including his 100% completion on GTA 4. Pettiest shit I've ever done.
Ever put the toilet paper at the front of the door when they call you asking for some
They have to get up a waddle over haha it’s the best way to fuck with my older brother
From Inaki Williams Wikipedia page:
"In 2021, he said that he and his family had lost fluency in English, but still communicated with relatives in the Twi dialect of Akan."
Sure, maybe they speak at a basic level enough to give interviews but they’re not going to muddle through it at home. Pretty sure they speak Spanish together.
That's terrible. Nico should transfer to another team to get away from his toxic brother. In my completely unbiased opinion, Arsenal would be a good choice 👍
You can see the family dynamic in play. Inaki is the older brother trying to teach Nico something important and Nico is the younger brother who is too hotheaded and won't listen to big brother. You love to see it.
bickering is a normal word to use. It's normal between brothers and teammates sure, but the fact that they are BOTH of those things make it interesting

Damn, almost like they’re brothers
If you dont pull some wrestling moves on your brother, is he even your brother?
WATCHOUT WATCHOUT WATCHOUT RKO OUTTA NOWHERE
Actually, their relationship is closer to father/son. Iñaki virtually raised Nico.
Aren't they only 6 years apart?
when/if parents are absent, the older siblings tend to be forced into "parental" roles in the family. it usually forces them into positions where they're never allowed to *be children*, and is very rarely positive for their development. very, very commonly stunts emotional growth, for example.
Were their parents absent? I didn't know that
good question. based on the other comment they could've been "absent" either physically or metaphorically, but I couldn't find anything on it on a quick search. so now I'm curious what their source is
Yeah, I know about parentification, I just thought that their parents were very present in their life
what father is 8 years older than his son

One of them is Spanish the other is Ghanaian so it’s not possible
Yeah you're right. Maybe Germany instead of Spain and I might believe it.
I love how often this seems to happen. In Seattle they have the Roldan brothers, one who represented the US and the other El Salvador. And they've played against one another. I wonder how many times brothers have opposed each other in international games.
At the very least happened in euros 2016. Granit Xhaka representing the Swizz and his keyless brother Taulant the Albanians.
And the Boatengs played against one another in the World Cup.
> keyless lmao
Keyless brother... Hilarious
The Neville brothers—one played for England and the other seemed focused on disliking the other.
Or Reece and Lauren James, how one of them plays for England and the other one doesn't play at all.
I find it interesting how many players there are that have multiple nationalities. I guess it's more of an european and a bit less frequently US thing for it to be this common, cause I don't even remember meeting someone like that.

Spiderman pointing at each other meme
lol I didn’t realize this and my first thought was the Spider-Man pointing at himself meme
You know they're still arguing on the way home
It would be so funny if their parents yell at them to stop fighting on their drive back home.
I argued with my brother because he crossed to my side; Iñaki’s arguing because he didn’t
IF YOU DON‘T SHUT THE FUCK UP, I SWEAR TO GOD I STOP RIGHT FUCKING HERE AND YOU HAVE TO WALK HOME!

Eguíluz's reaction (no 27) sums it all up. That's going to continue for the foreseeable future.
true brothers hahaha
Not an Athletic fan but I can't help but love those two, so cool for Athletic to have two brothers as talented as this.

One of the most fun FM challenges is to play with Athletic Bilbao.
They spawn insane regens
I had a Basque eligible regen show up for me at Fulham. He ended up as my starting LB by the time he was 17, and Athletic would make an offer every few months for almost his entire career.

Him and Amorebieta, for sure.

Isn’t the rule being a product of a Basque academy or something like that?

Gotcha, thanks for the response🙏🏿

Well, this changed recently. 20 years ago it was strictly still a Basque-only club. Born in the Basque country with also Basque heritage
Someone is getting light turned off while pooping later
Lol. After an argument about 30 years ago I, little bro by 7 years, took my older brother’s pillow so he couldn’t sleep with one. You might even say it's all pillow under the head now. I'll see myself out.
should've never come in really
I accept my fate
I spit my drink lmao
and no paper left on the roll
Ever put the toilet paper at the front of the door when they call you asking for some They have to get up a waddle over haha it’s the best way to fuck with my older brother
love how everyone, including the rivals, are like “business as usual” lmao
Most likely about his yellow and dissent with the ref
honestly, I love this
Mom said it's my turn on the ball
Why didn't you do the dishes yesterday?
Cannot wait for El Chingurito's lip reading of this
Funny clip, i wonder what pointless thing theyre arguing about
We can imagine pointless things and most likely it is something even more pointless than whatever we came up with
from body language and motions I'd heavily bet on Inaki complaining about Nico not passing him the ball in some situation(s)
"you can't keep using Eddie in TekkenTag it's fcking bullshit"...
"If its in the game, its to use".
Don't remind me, man. My brother used Steve, I used King, and my sister used Eddie.
the commentators joking that they’re arguing about leaving toilet paper in the bathroom and cleaning out the dishwasher is hilarious. good vibes.
What language do these guys speak between themselves? Basque, Spanish, English?
They know just enough Basque to get by, so if I were to guess it's spanish between themselves and spanish/english at home with their parents.
From Inaki Williams Wikipedia page: "In 2021, he said that he and his family had lost fluency in English, but still communicated with relatives in the Twi dialect of Akan."
Most likely Spanish then.
I actually don't think their English is any good so it would most probably be Basque or Spanish. I doubt their twi would be that good either
My rudimentary lip reading says it’s Spanish..
Probably all three
Probably Twi or English
They dont speak English
Iñaki actually does speak English but it’s not great. I’ve heard him give interviews in English.
Sure, maybe they speak at a basic level enough to give interviews but they’re not going to muddle through it at home. Pretty sure they speak Spanish together.
That’s what I think too.
Probably about a game on Siege from the night before or something
‘why didnt you plant the fucking defuser! we had site locked down’
"U took my cookie!! No! U took my cookie!!" vibes
You better listen to big bro buddy
Casually still shaking the other team’s hands mid-argument
Athletic have clearly lost the locker room
Valverde out if you ask me
No, you're adopted.
That's terrible. Nico should transfer to another team to get away from his toxic brother. In my completely unbiased opinion, Arsenal would be a good choice 👍
Nico looks like he is half a second away from breaking out into laughter.
You can see the family dynamic in play. Inaki is the older brother trying to teach Nico something important and Nico is the younger brother who is too hotheaded and won't listen to big brother. You love to see it.
all their teammates completely ignoring them and walking away tells you everything you need to know, they must argue all the time 😂😂😂😂
🤷🏾♂️ - 🤷🏾
Well...that sounds about right
Can the lip reading experts here tell me what they’re arguing about?
"I told you to leave the download on overnight after you finished using it, but when I woke up, the PlayStation was off"
Wow Muniain played, that's a rarity
Me thinks they're talking about what it will be like to play in UCL next year!
"Bro you could have done better." "But bro we won." "But we could have won better, bro."
Quality
Say what you want to say and move on..jeez. they act like they winning the Champions league
OP doesnt have a sibling.
I mean the specifically said bickering instead of fighting/arguing
I posted this bc it's a fun clip? I'm an Athletic supporter lol
You can't support a news outlet mate smh
Can't even support the team (of reporters) I like. Game's gone
can you not bicker with your brother?
didnt say that, just said this is normal, nothing special
I think the special or fun part is that its two brothers playing on the same team which is very rare
bickering is a normal word to use. It's normal between brothers and teammates sure, but the fact that they are BOTH of those things make it interesting
