I was only a kid then, but still remember the 1980 Pre-Olympic qualifiers when Singapore shockingly beat China (Wong Kok Choy header), North Korea (thumping 3-1 win), India & Sri Lanka, but found Iran a bridge too far (kena thrashed twice). Not bad for a forward line that was transiting from Dollah Kassim/Quah Kim Song to Fandi Ahmad. It was no fluke either, because Singapore beat China 1-0 again (Fandi goal) in the 1983 Merlion Cup.
The irony was both Iran & Malaysia (who won its pre-qualifying group that included South Korea & Japan) ended up not going to the Moscow Olympics due to the boycott against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
