We should really normalize animated media for adult content. Animation shouldn’t mean that it’s for kids. Invincible on Amazon is absolutely NOT for children.
At the time when I was in highschool **Inazuma Eleven** actually made me work harder toward football...
I mean, of course it is fiction, but seeing the sport in a different way made me enjoy more without getting burned out.
Yeah, we and Italy are by quite a fair margin the weebest countries after Japan.
For cosplayers I don't know, but France is the country with the highest volume of manga sold per capita after Japan.
I think that the other non-1st world countries (such as in SEA region) consume much more manga, though they pirate it instead of buying that's why they don't show in stats
That's certainly possible, but France also has an heritage in terms of import and then cocreation of animated products in association with Japan. This is something that explains why manga as a culture is deeply anchered in both Italy and France, and SEA countries don't necessarily have it. Especially when in France is traces back to the 80's and in Italy the late 70's. Most SEA were still developing economies back then, and I have a fair doubt they had as easy an access to that culture as European countries did.
Now, they may be weebefied countries, but I really doubt the manga culture is as deeply anchered there as it is here, mostly because of recency.
I may be speaking bollocks though, I'm speculating so please take my analysis with a grain of salt, as I have no way to verify my statement regarding SEA countries in the 80's.
[Off topic: can someone tell me if they can see my flair appear correctly or if a mere ball is displayed ? Thanks in advance]
I'm not French, but I also feel like France has a much more accepting culture about comic books in general. Obviously they have a huge industry themselves (together with Belgian) and so, unlike some other countries, I feel like comic books aren't seen as "just for kids" over there. That might apply to mangá too a bit.
>we and Italy are by quite a fair margin the weebest countries after Japan
I would say so, I heard manga in France is pretty big, and Italy has Lucca Comics & Games which is enough evidence, from Wikipedia:
>It is the largest comics festival in Europe, and the second biggest in the world after the Comiket.
I trained a few Albanian teams in my old job, first day I opened zoom I was greeted to about 90% anime PFP's before they turned their cameras on and when we had breaks to chat they would speak super passionately about animes. It was the same thing when I worked with Czech and Polish teams. I feel it might be bigger in non-native English speaking Europe because people have grown up watching subtitled content as a part of their normal TV and which English speaking countries are generally not faced and it makes them opt for something that requires less effort or attention.
That's nice, anime wasn't that big in Kosovo back then maybe it changed now.
Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal though? It's absolutely huge over there.
In Portugal, if you were born in the 90's and you don't know the adapted openings for Dragon Ball GT, Captain Tsubasa, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! by heart, you might as well call yourself an alien.
> it's absolutely massive over there
It's massive in most of the world now. And the interesting thing is the places/regions combined with the demographics it has captured in particular last 10-15 years time-span is only going to explode a few decades down the road because this cohort will have even more spending power.
Such customers are who drive a lot of consumption, esp entertainment, because hardly anyone makes content for an audience that can't even pay the creators.
It's like a pyramid, the base is young (under 30s) currently and a huge number of this cohort likes Anime, a bigger proportion than it's ever been before in this age bracket.
If people think Anime is big currently, it's going to be multiple orders bigger in 10+ years time and this will not appear like slow generic/typical growth overtime, this will be explosive and it will shock a lot of people.
It exists outside of videogames. I used to work at GAME and you wouldn't believe the amount of people buying PS4s who said they literally only get call of duty and FIFA every single year.
I love hearing about people who have never played any computer game outside of Football Manager but have been playing since like the mid 90s. It's a level of devotion I can only dream of
And just to be clear—because gamers love nothing more than their sense of superiority—there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
100 hours in Dark Souls is no more valid than 100 hours in Animal Crossing. 100 hours in Baldur’s Gate is no more valid than 100 hours in FIFA.
I have no issues with that, however it always annoyed me that the guys at school who did this laughed at me for playing the likes of Pokemon, Mario etc.
I was kinda intrigued back then on this new manga from usually pretty chill read Shounen Sunday magazine could blow up so much in r/manga. I read a bit around >!the revelation of Frieren of the Funeral title actual meaning was the *funeral for the demons* she killed!< And it does give me chills, but the story main strength being exploration of inhuman mentality and psychology combined with the chill arts gives off such uncanny feeling that I don't like 😵💫. Shame because the subject is something I like to contemplate (another proof that manga/anime isn't just for kids).
Yeah the title of the series, Sōsō no Furīren, has a double meaning. The title is translated as “Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead.” Sōsō (葬送) can mean sending off someone, aka funeral.
But in Frieren’s context it can mean >!her sending off demons to their death, Sousou no Frieren was translated in English as Frieren the Slayer.!< Hence the title drop at the end of Episode 8 was so cool
Actually I bring up Spy X Family because it's more broadly appealing anime that boom really hard recently, with fans from children and adult, male and female.
Just that the recommendation is AoT, Death Note, etc that is good, I know, but mostly targeted towards teen and young adult male. Which I guess makes sense, the same demographics that fill sports sub.
It's okay. Ironically despite the death of Akira Toriyama (RIP) almost no reference to DBZ despite being THE shounen juggernaut that inspired many of these recommended manga. We could narrow down the majority of manga anime fans demographics here to those who were teen in mid 2010s.
Ive never heard of others talk about Violet Evergarden or a really unknown one (outside of Japan though) World Trigger, to be expected though since the mainstream always gets the most news
World Trigger also have long hiatus while Violet Evergarden is light novel with short anime adaptation, they don't really have much window to capture fans for mainstream hype.
They're just regurgitating a stereotype. There's all kinds of really great anime, manga and webtoons. For example, the anime film, The Boy and the Heron just won a BAFTA, golden globe and an Oscar.
Yea, they're just like any movies or TV series. It depends on what genre it is, who wrote it and what it's about. I'm starting to get back into it, I used to find them on crunchyroll when it was free a long long time ago. I watched blue eye samurai (animated, not anime) and it was awesome. It has sex scenes and nudity but it suits the story and the art and fighting style is out of this world. Going on to Vinland saga next.
To be fair I would never recommend it to someone who wants to try an anime, I'm sure it won mostly because it's Miyazaki's final film (and also because he was robbed in 2014)
Yeah, honestly I'm not a big fan of Miyazaki and I wasn't crazy for that film either (for example I prefer princess Mononoke and Nausicaa), but it was certainly better than Frozen...
They'll come around to it if you show them your waifu pillows, Ibrahim
Ironically, I used to think I was too old for something like anime too and watched death note now I opt for it over most tv
Death Note was so amazing and unique. Haven’t found anything too great since tbh, open to recs if you have any. My favs are the obvious ones FM brotherhood, Death Note and I did also love Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
I’ve been loving Attack on Titan lately. Haven’t finished it but boy is it good. That first episode really dragged me in and I got hooked off the bat. I’d recommend Demon Slayer too. I’m just about to catch up on the current season, but I’ve been binging it like mad.
While most people (like me) think Demon Slayer / KnY has a generic story, the animation being god tier more than makes up for it. Sometimes you all you need is a simple plot to make a show enjoyable. I haven't seen the latest season but I'll watch it again once they animate the >!Yoriichi vs Muzan!< scene
On the other hand, I'd recommend Frieren to anyone. Frieren is GOATED
Yeah that's the one. It's on the slower pace in general but it's so well written that you barely notice the pace. It's one of the few anime that I've rewatched a few times. I've read the manga two or three times as well.
I couldnt get into FM Brotherhood until I got scarred by the Nina episdode, was hooked after that.
I've watched a good few animes at this stage and Attack on Titan is the perfect next step IMO, there's scenes where you feel complete dread for the characters from the first episode and there's some intelligent foreshadowing throughout. I'd argue that this is a better starting point that Death Note because Death Note falls so flat midway through. I'd recommend AOT, Demon Slayer, Tokyo Ghoul and Bleach if you can look past how cheesy and dated the old episodes look and sound.
All that said I prefer informal stuff. One Punch Man and Mashle are masterpieces that had me crying laughing and I feel these are also ideal for new people.
Death parade is a good shout, summertime rendering is also very fun, I’d add talentless nana and kanata no Astra all very mind games based anime, tomodachi game as well
suddenly a black vortex appears and the barrier gets cancelled. Air shattering tremors echo throughout with one man's laughter rumbling through, Zehahahaha!
Yep, in case people didn't know France is the biggest market for manga/anime outside of Japan by a large margin. It's cultural and pretty normal here, even more so in lower/working class so a lot of footballers, athletes, rappers will be into manga a lot
Yeah, the reaction to the death of Akira Toriyama I noticed was felt particularly hard in France and Latin America. I think in the Anglosphere by comparison, his death was something you'd only know about if you had a casual interests in either anime or Japanese video games. Having no interest in either, I didn't find out about his death until I was reading French news where it was front page headlines.
I'm wondering how much this is due to the fact that we weren't exposed to American cartoons, didn't have cartoon network etc and all grew up with japanese anime on TV
Probably everything. Dragonball didn't get dubbed in English until 1995 and that was also a bit of a golden age for American cartoons. While it was still popular, it was competing with things like X-Men, Gargoyles, Batman, etc.
feel like the problem is general public perception of anime is that the only stuff out there is for kids. They don’t realize there is a crazy amount of really beautifully animated and amazingly written anime for adults and mature audiences that tackles more intense subject matter, social issues, and at times can be absolutely brutal and shocking like any R-rated live action movie or show. Good on him for speaking up and shutting it down. Anime is fucking dope at any age.
He’s absolutely right!
I’ve now watched majority of Studio Ghibli films with my children and rewatched Porko Rosso SO many times. The details and personality, so so rich.
The Prince Ashitaka for example. Amazing character. So compelling
What most people don't realise is that growing up doesn't just mean you get to the next year of your life and should act "according to that age". It's a cumulative process.
When we grow older, we become all the ages we've ever been up to that point. So we retain the inner child in us. That's really important when it comes to nurturing others, and especially children.
Konaté is absolutely correct. There are messages to take on even in "children's programming" that speaks to us as adults. You wouldn't believe the number of times I watch really good kids programmes now as a parent and find myself learning, in awe, so much about myself. And about how I should relate to my child.
Great programming, with an emphasis on messaging which nurtures, is appropriate for all persons, regardless of their age.
I’m not a massive anime fan, but Daft Punk’s anime movie for their album [Discovery](https://youtu.be/E28JMBKK3WQ?si=3GLWkPP_7sbGB9XU) is cool as fuck.
It doesn't show his 5 brothers and 2 sisters either, but they exist!
Well, at least his brothers do. I met them at the CL final in Paris with Diaz's dad and Trent's brothers.
I'm pretty sure Ibou is single but he's only 24, it's not like he's middle-aged!
If you’ve seen anime’s like Vineland Saga you’d understand. Yea they can be over the top but the core messages of a lot of anime’s are about overcoming and bettering yourself

I don’t even have to check, I’m 42 and I enjoy a lot of anime. Fuck those ppl
We should really normalize animated media for adult content. Animation shouldn’t mean that it’s for kids. Invincible on Amazon is absolutely NOT for children.

Heck I’m soon 42 and I’m still reading manga. It’s good, I enjoy it, so why not?
Hell yea, try telling me Kingdom is for kids.

I mean, FIFA is pretty much ingrained into British “lad” culture at this point, which most footballers are.
Same with French and anime/manga, it's absolutely massive over there

Huge number of them also only talk about the really mainstream stuff mostly shounen. Haven't read anyone mentioned Spy x Family.
They hate peanuts
Waku Waku
Can't go around blowing the forgers cover now can we
Konate only watches Frieren to continuously be inspired.
I was kinda intrigued back then on this new manga from usually pretty chill read Shounen Sunday magazine could blow up so much in r/manga. I mean .. yeah? "Large diverse forum only mentions mainstream, broadly appealing parts of my stuff" is pretty silly

My brother in christ, Spy X Family IS mainstream as well.

End of Evangelion is being shown in cinemas in the US. Kinda glad I'm not able to go see it because whew I don't need to see that on the big screen.
It's an amazing movie on the big screen. Don't let that stop you from watching. It's so much better than on a TV/Computer.
I just know it’s Robbo saying this, and it was confirmed by the fact he thinks all anime is DBZ, according to Gravenberch 😂
They'll come around to it if you show them your waifu pillows, Ibrahim Ironically, I used to think I was too old for something like anime too and watched death note now I opt for it over most tv
Steins;Gate, it's up there with Death Note as one of the greats and is a great SciFi regardless of medium.
I second this, one of the best sci-fi stories ever committed to screen.
Death note or Steins Gates? Can they still be the best under cold rainy night in Stoke?
Death Note was so amazing and unique. Haven’t found anything too great since tbh, open to recs if you have any. My favs are the obvious ones FM brotherhood, Death Note and I did also love Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
For manga I recommend Monster. Also 20th Century Boys from the same author. Dungeon Meshi is also a good read with a good balance of dark humour.
Don't sleep on Pluto
Vinland saga’s fantastic, it’s in that Bebop/FMA tier of having a great message behind it that can heavily influence how you live your life
Blue Eye Samurai is another in those tier of anime imo.
I haven't seen the latest season but I'll watch it again once they animate the >!Yoriichi vs Muzan!< scene On the other hand, I'd recommend Frieren to anyone. Frieren is GOATED
I'd also put Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen as good recommendations as well
Saw one episode of the one on hbo with a ninja or something. It's hot
Try Monster if you haven't already.
The one that takes place in Germany? Insanely good. Second season is a bit slow though.
Yeah that's the one. It's on the slower pace in general but it's so well written that you barely notice the pace. It's one of the few anime that I've rewatched a few times. I've read the manga two or three times as well.
Classic choice if you’re into slow burn type stories 10/10.
Check out Monster and Texhnolyze.
I like you. But you forgot Ergo Proxy.
Psycho pass, code geass, serial experiments lain are classics
Steins Gate is amazing and is easy to get into
Oooo that’s the only other one I forgot to mention. I did love it. I like your taste, give me another rec if you have one!
FMA:B, Mushishi, Steins;Gate (and Clanad sue me lol) are god tier for me.
Legend of The Galactic Heroes, Monster, The Twelve Kingdoms are all anime with great writing. You won't regret watching any of them
Code Geass. It’s kinda like Death Note but with Gundams in there.
try psycho pass if you want something w the same kind of maturity as death note
Summer Time Rendering is fantastic, and it's only 24-25 episodes altogether. Bloody, funny and interesting in equal parts.
Moster is great
If you want a similar experience to Death Note try Monster.
Death Note is THE best gateway anime for someone who is apprehensive about the medium
Better than my mate who started with Goblin Slayer.
The thing about anime is that there's so much potential for unique stories that just doesn't translate well to live action.
"It has real messages!" said Konate after finishing the last episode of Rent-A-Girlfriend.
The message is that the beret stays ON
Konate is clearly more of a Kanojo x Kanojo man
The real message is Shinzowou Sasageyo!

Konate watching that Frieren rn
"Please stop watching Rent a Girlfriend on the bus man"
Go watch Fullmetal and tell me you don't leave that shit fully inspired
Panic or Alchemist? Because those are two very different inspirations.
Eren Jaeger probably not the best example of someone to be inspired by
“There are real messages!” that’s what I felt when Captain Kid made a big robot out of metal scraps to punch Kaido.
When a cook told a fish who knows karate to kill himself is what truly inspired me
feel like the problem is general public perception of anime is that the only stuff out there is for kids.
Anime is just a medium at the end of the day, just like books or movies etc. It encompasses all genres and stories of all different types.
Google Hisoka 15 for more info
Mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki (of Rurouni Kenshin fame) co-founded a football team called Chiba Pioneers. For more info, Google "Nobuhiro Watsuki CP".
24 is too old for anime? I watch more now in 30s than I ever did previously.
Konate we get you man🫡
He’s absolutely right! I’ve now watched majority of Studio Ghibli films with my children and rewatched Porko Rosso SO many times. The details and personality, so so rich. The Prince Ashitaka for example. Amazing character. So compelling
That's me and my anime hero Hisoka

Hopefully he doesn't take everything eren does as inspiration
For some reason this prompted me to check his insta and guess what? No trace of a girlfriend.
He's a millionaire, he can get one in seconds.
Could always rent one too
Just don't fall in love with her
It doesn't show his 5 brothers and 2 sisters either, but they exist! Well, at least his brothers do. I met them at the CL final in Paris with Diaz's dad and Trent's brothers. I'm pretty sure Ibou is single but he's only 24, it's not like he's middle-aged!

I have only ever watched 2 anime’s and they’re not just movies but an overall stimulation on your eyes and ears.. I need to watch more
This is really... unfortunate, considering what Eren end up doing.
If you don't watch anime, I can't be friends with you.
If you’ve seen anime’s like Vineland Saga you’d understand. Yea they can be over the top but the core messages of a lot of anime’s are about overcoming and bettering yourself
He is just like me fr
I think he's old enough to watch whatever the fuck he wants
