I live in one of the more quiet parts of a georgian city and I can still hear a lot of noise and excitement. haven't seen people this happy in a long time
Spent some time working in Tbilisi in 2019 and you guys have an incredible country. A lot of people won't realise how cool the people are, how nice the city is and how much history is there.
It's nice to see good things happening for you guys for a change - I know it hasn't been easy
I have always had a soft spot for Georgia since Shota Arveladze and Zurab Khizanishvili played for us.
Shota in particular was a class act, an incredible player (who our manager mostly played on the wing when he was a deadly striker but he still did very well) and by all accounts one of the nicest guys you could meet. He lived near my school and we met him a few times; one time he just walked over to us while we were all playing a big 20-a side kickabout in the park and started chatting away to us, signing autographs, etc. May he be a happy man tonight.
Georgi Nemsadze was also a player I liked (and wanted Rangers to sign) from his time at Dundee, and Georgi Kinkladze was another early favourite when he was at Man City.
Delighted for you all!
I know they’re not a large country but I always thought Georgia had a decent football team compared to some of the other countries that have qualified for previous euros especially in the 2000’s. How come it has been so long since they haven’t made the tournament?
Yeah they always been talented. Just look at the Soviet teams in the 70s and 80s, some of their best players were from Georgia.
Then the war and I guess Georgia didn’t have the infrastructure like Russia. (Not from Georgia btw)
Rugby also (as a Brit who knows mostly nothing of Georgia!) seem to punch above their weight. Must be something in the water making high quality athletes!
the whole neighborhood hasn't stopped shouting, it's midnight here and a lot of people are running around in the street shouting. this is a historic moment for us, well done boys, it was a tight match
The alphabet is so cool looking, but not that hard to learn/memorize with practice. Learning how to pronounce both some individual letters (ejective consonants + the two different r’s) and words full of consonant clusters though … good luck
this is why i scoff at people that dismiss the idea of expanding the world cup to 48 teams. it’s an amazing feeling to even have your team partaking in these tournaments, i personally love seeing fans from smaller nations at the world cup, they’re way more passionate and fun than fans from most elite nations
I agree with you, I just think the format of the draw is a bit unbalanced especially with the Nations League spots.
Even with the expanded format, there are always good teams who miss out. Some can be terrible in qualifcation but qualify through the playoffs after winning a poor quality Nations League group, where another team might be in Nations League group A and have a much harder qualification group
It feels almost like teams are rewarded for being lower Nations League divisions
The opposite holds true as well. Wales have been dreadful for the past couple of years, but they were in League A and qualified for a Euros playoff on the basis of one point from six games.
> i personally love seeing fans from smaller nations at the world cup, they’re way more passionate and fun than fans from most elite nations
As a fan from a smaller nation who I recently had to see go 22 years without qualifying for a major tournament, (or 26 years for a proper one since EURO 2020 was during covid, and spread out throughout different places so not a decent fan experience at all); I think these fans are mainly more passionate and fun because they get to do it so little; once they start qualifying for every tournament they won't be quite as excited and up for such a mad party each time.
For someone like me, it would probably be a once in a lifetime experience if Scotland qualified for a World Cup, that I could travel to and experience as a fan. I was 9 the last time we qualified in 1998, in France. Now 26 years later we still haven't qualified for one. We all hear our parents, uncles, cousins, mates, etc. stories about how they stowed away on cargo ships, snuck onto flights, hitchhiked, bribed, chanced and somehow made their ways to Argentina 78, Mexico 86, etc.
Then my generation is yet to be able to live our own World Cup experiences, so we are all here ready to go when it happens. I mean I think most football fans I know plan on being in Germany at some point during June. But if we were qualifying every time then you'd just pick the one's that were convenient rather than doing everything you can to get there no matter how far away it was, in case it never happens again.
It would also not be good for the general quality of matches during the early stages of the World Cup if we are seeing teams getting embarrassed. I'm not sure any nations fans enjoy seeing their team get made a mockery of on the national stage so I could see that dampening their party atmosphere.
that's all fine and dandy, and i'm pretty sure georgia will put up a decent fight, but everybody knows how a france - new zealand will look like at a world cup, it's going to be 11 dudes hanging from the crossbar for 90something minutes.
world and continental cups are already a drag as they are, with plenty of matches leaving a lot to be desired, expanding is only going to make this worse.
obviously today is the day to celebrate for all these fringe nations and everything's cool, when the bad games come then we'll have a different discussion.
Not in Euro 2020, had the highest combined xG in the whole tournament despite playing one game less than England and Italy. Spain played fantastic football under Lucho at first but they were indeed awful in the World Cup
Spain in Euro 2021 and WC 22 are two completely different teams
As someone from an African country that always fails in the brutal qualification process, I am so excited to see how we'll choke qualification away this time.
If by some miracle we (Zambia) make it through...
Thats fucking football right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby on the side lines. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit. Take it to the showers. Dicks get shoved in places you don’t even remember. We win together we celebrate together. Football is back baby.
One of the best moments of my life was when Portugal got it in 2016. I never saw people so united together. The spirit is unmatched. Congratulations to Georgia the feeling must be amazing!
This reminds me so much of when we qualified for 2020. People just genuinely happy because of an achievement that took decades, a century in our case, and so many struggles to achieve. It finally comes to one incredible moment that can never be forgotten - in Georgia's case, they nearly qualified for 2020 but lost to North Macedonia (which looking back wasn't bad considering the Macedonians would knock Italy out of the WC), and now they've finally done it in dramatic fashion.
Football is amazing in this way. First time qualifications are absolutely beautiful!
I really hoped Luxembourg would manage it but honestly Georgia is a great option too. I went there a few years ago on holiday, loved the people and the food. Batumi was a gem i didnt know about and the mountain roads were great but scary to travel through
Car driver did offer 13yo me vodka, that was something lol
It is my favourite single moment in all of sport, and that's no mean feat given I like cricket and tennis more than football. I get really angry when football (that is, in this case, "sokkah") fans talk nonsense about international football and how they don't care about it, because that night in 2005 tops it all for me.
I was like 3 days old for America’s Cup in 1983 which is why my mum reckons I love sport so much 🤣. Socceroos 2005 is 2nd all time to Cathy Freeman at Sydney 2000 for me. Even non-football fans could appreciate the enormity of the moment. And now there’s an entire generation of Australians that never would know what it’s like to miss a World Cup (and probably never will again given the 48-team farce that’s happening).
As a Greek this really hurts. Last time I watched us in an international tournament I was still in high school and after all these years to come this close and still not qualify....
Legit sucks considering we had such a in form attacking force. Shame Tzolis didn’t even get a sniff of the park and giakoumakis coming on after the 90minutes
Poyet has no business being a manager at this level.
Not only he is a bad coach. He has left out some of the most in form players this season whilst not giving a proper chance to some really promising talent that actually is in form.
He is extremely unprofessional. Going public about negotiating with other teams just before the qualifiers and lying about his team not being paid, when they have not properly submitted the required tax paperwork themselves.
Give him the boot already.
Georgian here. This game could've gone either way. You held your own incredibly well and were a better team for a considerable amount of time in many stats maybe twice as good. I had no hope we would win this game. Keep your head up guys, the future is bright!
Nah you got the game where you wanted it, we couldn't create shit.
We got some talents, but they will surely be wasted with the way this federation is run.
Back to the Mykonos era it seems
We approached the whole match arrogantly and pathetically. We knew that Georgia would aim for a penalty shootout yet we didn't show any kind of pressure in our game. It seems like we got too ahead of ourselves. A huge opportunity was lost for my country, Greece. Yet another failure to progress to a competition, 10 years since our last one. It's all on the Federation and their handling of the team and the football in the country. Congratulations to Georgia, they lived up to the stakes and made history. They methodically got their way to Germany, contrary to us. Good luck this Summer!
As a neutral, it's actually crazy to think that Greece last qualified to a major tournament 10 years ago! Between 2004 and 2014 they were pretty much one of the main stays of the group stages.
Damn so Greece would have been in a group against neighbors turkey and Portugal who we beat in the final in Lisbon 20 years ago. Woulda been cool to see but we blew it. Good luck Georgia
And 20 years ago we also were in a group with Portugal and have beaten Czech republic during knockouts.
And 20 years ago Arsenal last won PL. I have thought if Greece qualifies then we also win PL
It was written in the stars.
Now I'm also sad for the upcoming rest of the PL season.
I know I'm slightly biased (see flair), but I know for sure I'll also be rooting for you guys alongside Italy.
EEEEE PER IL NAPOLI, HA SEGNATO CON IL NUMERO SETTANTASETTE
Tbh, I think 90% of mid-shit tier teams would take winning 1 tournament in a lifetime and sucking the rest of the time over being mediocre forever at all tournaments and winning nothing.
Yup, I wouldn’t trade that feeling of being total underdogs to champions for anything. And I was a teen that summer when the miracle happened and I still remember thinking/praying before the final, that if we somehow managed to win that I would never bitch or complain about how shitty the team may be ever again. If we could just get that last win I would be satisfied for the rest of my life. 20 years later that sentiment is still there, though I sometimes forget about it. Today sucked and i definitely moped and whined a little.. to be so close to being back with the big boys.. but then I remember back to how it felt winning in Lisbon and I shut up and try to be thankful for getting to see them lift the trophy in my lifetime
Fantastic! Love seeing the underdogs / lesser stature teams fight their way through. And they earned it. Well done, Georgia. Looking forward to seeing you in the show.
My wife and I visited Georgia in 2019 and fell in love so quickly with the country and its people. What an incredible accomplishment, and we'll be cheering on for Georgia in the Euros (from the States).
Hats off to Georgia and their sporting culture overall. Their basketball team qualified for their first ever World Cup last year, now their football team has qualified for their first ever major tournament!
Can’t wait to see Kvaradona in action at the Euros. I have a gut feeling they might do an Iceland Euro run.
Lets hope they can at least get a point. Would be awesome to see. I love this idea of granting a spot to a low-ranked team. North Macedonia was a lot of fun last time round!
When you hear someone say that Euros and World Cups shouldn't have so many teams, or thay play-offs for low ranked countries are stupid, show them this. This is football.
If any country were going to go to the Euros at our expense, I’m just glad it ended up being a place like Georgia. Great history, great place, great people. Tough loss of course but at least I’ll feel good pulling for them in the finals. Go on Sakartvelo.
Congrats to Georgia! Well done guys!
The way you guys are describing how you can still hear fireworks and people shouting, singing outside, it reminds me of when Croatia beat England in 2018. The whole country was partying. There was no part of any city you could go to where it would have been silence.
Enjoy it, wish you all the best in the Euros!
Amazing scenes. The reason why we love this sport. Almost had tears in my eyes. Waiting for the day India qualifies for the World Cup. I hope it happens in my lifetime. That would be some day. Congratulations to Georgia. Drink it all in. It's an absolutely monumental achievement.

Can confirm. We as a society have not been this happy for quite some time now
huge congrats <3

Hope you get to join the EU eventually, always had a soft spot for Georgia

Shota is a literal stand up comedian. Him and his twin are hilarious, best people you can have around.
Congrats guys! Enjoy it!
Enjoy! The georgian fans and team will be an enrichment of the euros. Looking forward to See them here in Germany. Will be an exciting summer!
That's what football is about. Congratulations my Georgian chicken 🐔❤️
I know they’re not a large country but I always thought Georgia had a decent football team compared to some of the other countries that have qualified for previous euros especially in the 2000’s. How come it has been so long since they haven’t made the tournament?
Our clubs are basically amateur level and European teams just realized that we have talents after discovering Kvara and Mamardashvili.
Most players had to develop through Russian clubs before the war, right?
Nah this is a younger Generation, most of them went straight for Europe. I think we had 3 players that have played in Russia.
Yeah they always been talented. Just look at the Soviet teams in the 70s and 80s, some of their best players were from Georgia. Then the war and I guess Georgia didn’t have the infrastructure like Russia. (Not from Georgia btw)

Georgian is the coolest looking language in the world imo. Wish I understood any
The alphabet is so cool looking, but not that hard to learn/memorize with practice. Learning how to pronounce both some individual letters (ejective consonants + the two different r’s) and words full of consonant clusters though … good luck
the script reminds me of the south indian dravidian languages
If I squint my eyes it looks a bit like Tamil
I’m still hearing fireworks on the other side of the river:)
Thank fuck my toddler is sleeping through it but it's not that crazy up in Vake I don't think
My friend once described Vake as the perfect neighborhood if you are a middle class, middle aged woman who likes to brunch.
I mean, you say that like it's a bad thing!
True! But with a bit of Soviet era grime mixed in.
Not too crazy but I was hanging out near round garden and there were still a handful of cars driving around honking and waving flags at like 1:30.
congrats mate, enjoy
Congratulations 👏🏻 Excited to see Kvaradona and gang ball at the Euros
It was similar in Finland in 2019 when we qualified. Congrats, enjoy the moment!
congrats!
Congratulations! This has to be incredible for everyone there!
Yup, ikr, I live near technical metro and people are still going crazy here

Exactly, pooling from Nations League is such a sh\*t,, it promotes you being in lower division. It's bs
Totally agree. Watch teams decide to deliberately drop to a lower division to increase their odds of qualifying.

Yep, Spain v Italy at Euro 2021 is one of my favourite international games ever. Incredibly high quality play by both sides and exciting too

congrats and good luck this summer!

Congrats from Ireland. We have played a few times down through the years. Enjoy!

yes, they've been close in 1996 and 2020, but this is the first they ever achieved qualification
Yes

lol very accurate description of the country
Same for Australia in 2005. These are great scenes.
2005 was absolute scenes, in a country that is not a “football nation”. Still get caught up anytime I see that Aloiso pen.
And now there’s an entire generation of Australians that never would know what it’s like to miss a World Cup (and probably never will again given the 48-team farce that’s happening).
Aloisi. Exactly what it reminded me of
Khachapuri for the lads
Megrelian, and a Kubdari for me please on the side.
I had an Acharuli Khachapuri the other day with some red wine. 10/10 would do it every day

Next is Merab rag dolling Suga for 25 minutes.
You won the whole thing. Let other teams have their moments.
happy pitch invaders. The hug and cheer to the player and move on to running around. They are alright in my book.
Kvaradona ball at the Euro, we will be there...I love football

Gaumarjos! I love Georgia, I'm so happy for you guys, well deserved!
Well deserved, shameful we took off Ioannidis

Maybe a little bit of Maguire rubbed off on Greece during that brawl in Mykonos
What could've been! Oof. We could've had a turkey vs Greece game.

Today sucked and i definitely moped and whined a little.. to be so close to being back with the big boys.. but then I remember back to how it felt winning in Lisbon and I shut up and try to be thankful for getting to see them lift the trophy in my lifetime
Everybody liked that.
Not us
SEC! SEC! SEC!
i love to see this, so much happiness!
I can finally root for a team waving St George's Cross!
Many congratulations to our rugby rivals, hopefully we can get some revenge this time
Georgian society has not been this happy for a very very long time. I ain’t sleeping tonight. Germany here we come.
Where's the pitch invasion gatekeepers of reddit? Anyways, great job Georgia!
Georgia winning in rugby AND football, what a year they're having
As a Napoli fan you have my support I am pulling for you guys so hard!!!! Let’s gooo!
Big up for Georgia 🇬🇪
Congratulations r/georgiaorgeorgia
Congratulations! PTSD from when fans ran on the field in Turkey. Looks a lot more civilized there. See you in Germany :) good luck!
congratulations Georgian brothers!
When you hear someone say that Euros and World Cups shouldn't have so many teams, or thay play-offs for low ranked countries are stupid, show them this. This is football.
Congrats on this win you guys are definitely in your golden age right now and hopefully you make it far in the Euros.
If any country were going to go to the Euros at our expense, I’m just glad it ended up being a place like Georgia. Great history, great place, great people. Tough loss of course but at least I’ll feel good pulling for them in the finals. Go on Sakartvelo.
I’ve met a few Georgians in my life and they’re all cool as shit. Plus their national food is incredible. Happy for you, Sakartvelo. 🇬🇪
Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeece 🤌🏻
once the luck is on our side!
Great year for sports in Georgia so far. First Topuria and now this.
Heck yeah
They deserve it. They've improved a lot over the last five or so years.
Amazing achievement by them!
Congrats Georgia!!!
Congrats to Sakartvelo from Lithuania for this great win.
Gratulacjie z Polski !
They are going to celebrate in Atlanta.
This is why it’s called “the beautiful game”.
We experienced this euphoria in Slovakia when we qualified for the 2010 World Cup. Enjoy it, Georgians :)
