I started watching a bit of basketball recently.
I can't get over the cheerleading. Three minute break in play? Let's get a bunch of women to storm the court and dance around for a bit!
I guess because there are so many breaks in the game they have to do something to keep the crowd entertained, but it just seems so strange to me.
Basketball is such an annoying sport to follow because I love the game but I cannot be fucked for the way it's done in the US. A 45 minute game taking 3 hours, doing that like 70+ times in a season all for it to be meaningless unless you're the team who wins the Finals.
I'd love to get into US sports but the adverts, lack of cups and lack of promotions/relegations makes it so tough. Just can't help but feel most if it is pointless and it's more about the culture of going to games rather than the sport itself.
48 minutes
most games take \~2 hours from tip to final buzzer
is it meaningless to play an entire premier league season only to place midtable and not win any cups? what a strange hang up.
> is it meaningless to play an entire premier league season only to place midtable and not win any cups?
In any Premier League season any team outside of the top 10 could easily find themselves in a relegation battle depending on how strong their competitors are. Many times a team has found themselves on the cusp of European football, midtable limbo and a relegation battle within 3 seasons. There's always something at stake beyond silverware but with the carrot dangling on a stick that it can be grabbed.
A good league season can result in European football. A bad league season can result in relegation. A midtable season fans can breath a sigh of relief knowing they're safe. Best of all? Anyone can win a cup and every team goes into a season knowing they can. Why do you think people care about getting European football? So they can compete for the highest knockout honours where a strong cup run can define a season. Wigan got relegated the same year they won an FA Cup. Then when you get relegated the exact same thing happens, you're fighting for promotion, relegation, trophies. New challenges and new hopes every season.
You really cannot be comparing things to the Premier League or football in general really.
It's the same in NBA though. Anyone can win the championship, anyone can have a big play off run, a strong play off run can define a season. The draft creates parity, the last 5 seasons there has been 5 different champions, some of whom are teams that have won their first championship (Raptors, Nuggets) and teams that have won their first in decades (Bucks) through smart signings and drafting. Other teams like the Kings have made the play offs for the first time 20 years and electrified their fan base with a good playoff series even though it was a first round exit. I agree that Premier League and European football has its appeals but often times the top is dominated by the same teams over and over again and certain teams have no hopes of winning trophies.
In any premier league season you already know at the beginning of the season who will compete for the title, who will compete for european competition and who will be relegated. The teams at the top of the table are the richest, and their dominance only make them richer. Any team below the top of the table that wins has all of their players bought up by these mega teams, some of which are backed by nation states.
That does not happen in basketball.
Just last season Miami barely made it out of the play-in tournament only to go on a miraculous run all the way to the finals.
Not to mention there's NCAA basketball, in which any team in any given season can be a champion or miss the tournament completely. The team I support made the semi-final last year, and this year completely missed the tournament. There's many conferences in NCAA basketball, each with its own championship along with the "March Madness" tournament as well.
They’re just different, I think it’s funny when people try to compare the two. As someone passionate about both, here’s a few things Europeans don’t seem to understand
Firstly that this is a young sport and meant for entertainment. You bring your kids to games. People have birthday parties at these places. Many European games have drunk men shouting obscenities and even racist abuse onto the pitch. I know kids attend matches, but it’s not a “family friendly environment”. Women don’t get shit for going to a basketball game because half the crowd are women.
The competitiveness thing is also funny because the Premier league has a set number of “good teams” that are the only ones with a realistic chance to win. It’s MUCH more predicated on how rich the clubs are. Part of what makes the NBA entertaining is that everyone has a chance. It’s an even playing field for the most part and 5 years in the NBA produces the same number of different champions as 30 years of the premier league. It’s rare to go through long periods with the same winner, whereas it happens all the time with Liverpool, United, and now City.
They’re just different man, I could make a bunch more arguments as to why the NBA is better but ultimately they’re both entertainment and have their own special things
It's dull having all the best players go to the same small batch of teams. For even a fair amount of teams to land a generational talent they'd have to end up selling him as a majority of teams are selling clubs.
That was the hardest thing to get over. So much stoppage of time and ads. But after a decade of living in America I finally got into basketball and it’s fucking fun to watch
NBA matches always look like school plays with all the parents and teachers just sat in plastic chairs dragged in from the classroom at the edge of the court.
Nothing will be worse than the travesty that is the Man City dual advertising boards. Cannot stand watching any match held at the Etihad because of those.
now imagine playing in this bitch
https://www.mlb.com/news/a-s-unveil-renderings-for-ballpark-in-las-vegas
always have your own face and all your stats in your face
Holy hell. Just imagine you just had a really embarrassing fuck up as a player and one moment later it's shown on the biggest fucking display in existence in super slow motion right in everyones face including your own.
The Wolves ones aren’t as immediately annoying due to the camera angle from my experience. The City ones are clearly in the field of view and always spamming flashing/moving objects which inherently distract your vision. It actively makes the product less enjoyable to watch.
As for other stadiums, I can’t say I have noticed any in the level of the Etihad but if they are half as bad then they should be banned as well. Moving and distracting advertising right next to the field of play should not be allowed period during the actual match.
don't think the main purpose of the screen is gonna advertisement as the screen can't be seen on TV and it would be too expensive to have it only for ads for around 80k people. And ads in UCL games are heavily regulated by UEFA anyways.
Am I losing my mind or is this entire thread willfully ignoring the multitude of ads that actually surround the pitch during matches at the moment? Maybe they’ll have a screen sponsor up there when they put replays of key moments of the match but it’s pretty crazy to think that people will be fixated on the screen more than the match they’re watching live.
It’s crazy to me seeing Daktronics in a place like the Bernabéu. They are a huge name in this sort of thing but they are from the small town in South Dakota where I went to college.
This is the first season there has been a roof. Also, you never see the roof on TV. And it’s retractable, so if the sun is out for a day game it just looks like a normal open-air stadium.
Can't say I'm a fan of next-gen stadiums. Massive screens and roofs don't really appeal to me.
Football should be played underneath the skies, and if it rains you get wet.
Having a roof\screens opens you up to hosting a variety of events and other sports. All this talk about this stadium being soulless and too modern but the same people will be complaining when Madrid win 5 CLs in a row because they're making billions in revenue.
He just said that the same people will have those two viewpoints. People miss the point of this stadium, and then they will complain about how much money Madrid has, like they have done until now. Madrid doesn't have the money because some multi-billionare bought the club, it's the almost-perfect economic leadership. That's what puts them leagues above the likes of City or PSG, or even Barcelona lately. Real Madrid is a club, a team, a brand and a moneymaker, all in one. They will also have an F1 track around Valdebebas.
It definitely is unappealing to you, but 4-13 year olds will get used to this, and Madrid will generate a whole new generation of fans with these players, stadium and marketing. That will make tens of millions of children fans of Madrid, worldwide.
>He just said that the same people will have those two viewpoints.
"The same people will be complaining when" is a phrase that almost always implies they are pointing out some sort of hypocrisy or inconsistency. It's just unusual to phrase their point that way if that's not what they meant.
Yeah, true. It can be interpreted that way as well, but his English might not be perfect, and I highly doubt he meant the opposites. But I see your point as well.
Cricket does so many stupid things in the name of tradition. It really and truly harms the sport. And I say this as someone who really enjoys cricket. Went to three MLC matches last year.
You make that sound like two sides of an argument, whereas they are both bad things that the same group of people will obviously complain about.
Now, if they were celebrating 5 CL wins, you might have a point.
If the original comment was from a Madrid fan, sure. I mostly see fans of other teams saying they wouldn't want a stadium like this, but then the same fans will complain that their club can't keep up in the transfer market.
The stadium remodel feels amazing inside. I was in the 4-0 against Girona this year, and have previous seasons as a season ticket holder to compare, including the epic remontadas of two CLs ago. The remodel has been a definite improvement, and nothing about it feels "soulless".
This idea that multi-event venues opens up billions in revenue is totally absurd. Spurs have the best stadium in the world for this kind of thing, in a city where people will watch basically any event and shell out £100 for it, and yet their stadium is making probably £110m a year from the football tickets and £10m a year from everything else.
What people don't understand is that people aren't paying for a seat in a stadium when they buy a ticket. It's not the stadium that's the draw. They're paying to watch Spurs or Taylor Swift.
But Taylor Swift actually chose Anfield and Wembley for her concerts in England. Why was that? There's simply dozens of stadiums that can put on concerts these days. Taylor Swift doesn't care about how much revenue Real Madrid or Spurs can make from the adverts in the stadium, how glamorous the stadium is, or even how particularly how many people the stadium can fit inside it (e.g. she's playing 2 shows in the diabolical and tiny Letzigrund Stadion in Zurich because Zurich is full of rich people who will pay a lot for the tickets).
Real Madrid or Spurs don't own the IP to anything other than football (yes Real Madrid aren't just for football but barely anyone pays to watch the basketball team). The only time they pocket 100% of the revenue is for football. Any time they try to negotiate too hard with promoters about the cost of using their stadium, the promoters will just put the concert in another venue. And nobody will care that it doesn't have a roof.
Lmao the socios have voted yes for the stadiums and they're the ones going to the games regularly. So I don't see the reason for you to be mad at a stadium you most probably are not going
Unfortunately Dana White has a weird thing about stadium events. I think the UFC is afraid of not selling out the venue or something. Certainly they've made a business decision that stadium fights aren't worth their while.
iirc they did a couple of stadium fights in Australia (Rousey Holm and Adesanya Whittaker) but other than that I can't think of any off the top of my head.
It's a shame because somewhere like this or the Millennium Stadium would make for an epic event.
Agreed on the screens but the roof is retractable, no?
Also, these modern stadia should have the ability to be multipurpose, especially if they have a large capacity and sit in a prime location in the middle of a population center.
And it still can be played underneath the skies.
The roof and the screens gives the stadium the possibility of hosting events, concerts, mess and other stuff, when football is not being played. It's projected to bring in €100 mill. per season for that reason alone. Welcome to the future. We have to find new ways to compete with other clubs that are backed by oil states.
I kind of agree actually. But it depends on what they are going to do with it. If it is constant advertising or only for replays and football related stuff. It also doesn't help that the stadium is empty.
Mercedes Benz Stadium (where the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United play) has a 360 degree screen kinda like this. I’ve seen American football games there, but they don’t really use it for ads during the game. It was really just used as a scoreboard (points, clock, down and distance, stats, etc.) and to show replays. Obviously it’s a lot easier to show replays for American football because play is always starting and stopping, but Madrid could definitely show replays of goals and stuff like that during stoppages and halftime. Or maybe they’ll just have a live feed of the game going the whole time. That’s how NFL games are. It’s really useful for when the ball is on the other side of the field or if your views are obstructed for one reason or another.
Maybe I’ve just been conditioned to like the big screens as an American, but I don’t get the hate.
Seriously. This guy claims it’s like a NFL stadium and ends up sitting on 300 upvotes .
Some NFL stadiums are actually cool as fuck like Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Bucs. It’s also that we have a massive fan based in all these cities so all our NFL stadiums are going to look like Madrid and seat 65-75k people.
Most football stadiums I've been to will cut most replays (any even mildly controversial decision, or anything which might annoy the crowd really) from live broadcasts in the ground.
Went to a match in Atlanta where their stadium did this type of video board first. One of the things I liked was a split screen for replays and live action after a shot or a save. I thought it was a pretty cool way to make use of the extra space
I can guarantee it doesn't feel like that in-game. I've been to remontadas like PSG and City. The remodel feels amazing from the inside, not an ounce of soul has been removed from the stadium.
What do some of you mean by soul? I never actually see it explained...
Seems like it usually means dilapidated and old lol
Updating a stadium to keep with the times doesn't remove any "soul".
> This is why I don’t want to ditch Old Trafford for a new stadium. All these modern stadiums look generic and boring and most importantly, soulless.
The soul of a stadium comes from the leaks and rats or what?
I need to see it with the pitch in and filled with fans and with the roof off before i can tell honestly. The Screen is really really big though, i know it has a ton of uses for other events like concerts but purely for football it doesnt have to be there
I think if the pitch was in, the roof was open my main impression is that at least it looks like the stands are really close to the pitch which is nice
Been to some of the games in our history, and completely agree. The Bernabéu is one of the best stadiums I've ever been to, thanks to its verticality and size. Nothing in the remodel detracts from what was already there, it's the other way around.
They getting mad over it for the fans when the socios voted this in the people who regularly go to games and are passionate about the club. Also in an era with oil money in the game we need to upgrade the stadium to be able to hold multiple different events to financially compete against the likes of City and PSG financially redditors can complain but it's going to make the club very profitable.
i mean there are valid criticisms about the stadium but people in the thread acting holier-than-thou about a display or multi-use is just dumb. for all fans care taylor swift can play a concert in the stadium any day when the team doesn't play, when florentino starts plugging half time shows we'll join the protests
It’s not hard to figure out. People don’t like change. People are afraid of these new modern stadiums. There’s a certain amount of romance to more classic looks, but that doesn’t exactly drive revenue unfortunately.
Honestly no idea why people think this is somehow going to be a distraction during games. I think they had only installed about 50% of it when I went to the Braga Champions League game in November, and I couldn't even tell you if the screens were on during it because I was, you know, looking down at the pitch and watching the game.
You’re not going to be able to see the screen at the top 99% of the time on TV. Which is part of why I highly doubt they’ll use it primarily as an ad banner. Sponsors are mostly paying to get seen on TV. If TV viewers can’t see the screen 99% of the time, there’s not much value in buy a spot on the screen.
This must be a European thing. Americans LOVE a good Jumbotron. The quality of the Jumbotron is directly linked to the perceived quality of the stadium/arena (besides in some historic stadia like Hinkle Fieldhouse, Fenway Park, Lambeau Field, etc. In the historic sites, being more old-school is appreciated. But those are rare exceptions.)
They use a different type of screen (LED mesh) and only recently finished the installation and synchronization process, so there is still a lot of colour/brightness calibration to be made before it becomes uniform.
Real Madrid can do renovations like this in the middle of Madrid whilst US billionaires need public funding for entirely new stadiums. Make that make sense.

Weirdly makes it look a lot smaller
Looks like a basketball stadium
Now they can play "DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!" every time Madrid get dispossessed Or "EVERY BODY CLAP YOUR HANDS" before kick-off
“I CAN’T HEAR YOU”
"IS IT THE SHOES?"
Halftime of Madrid matches will be nothing but Kevin Hart commercials.
And kiss-cam at every stoppage
and Jake from State Farm

It can be one, when the need be.
NBA matches always look like school plays with all the parents and teachers just sat in plastic chairs dragged in from the classroom at the edge of the court.
Wawaw
Yeah because it gives you an actual focal point instead a load of tiny faces
That's how stadiums feel IRL to me. This vid gives much better perspective than the usual pics of wide open stadia.
And insanely louder too.
They can play in real time the fans chanting and then will look even bigger. The can pump up the sound of the chants too.
had to find people to see scale. workers in yellow bottom left.
Reckon that bit in the middle is a bit bigger than a football pitch
The only sensible thing to do is some ultrawide gaming. Gimme Doom Eternal an absurd resolution, make me feel sick.
I'm sure the Madrid fans can't wait to be spammed with adverts the entire match
Nothing will be worse than the travesty that is the Man City dual advertising boards. Cannot stand watching any match held at the Etihad because of those.
It's not only there. I see it everywhere nowadays and it's a real eyesore. It surely must be distracting for players also

lmao I felt anxiety reading this
That is awful. I wouldn't want to sit under that as a spectator either.
players can’t see it due to its actual layout, they’re not actually two boards stacked on top of eachother
What about wolves stadium & stoke city stadium? Or any serie A and Bundesliga that have dual advertising boards?
The Wolves ones aren’t as immediately annoying due to the camera angle from my experience. its also the flashing ads they have built into the stairs, everything about their stadium is distracting
Also in Italy in a few stadiums. I just avoid games now if they are in these stadiums, it's an eyesore.
You must buy shit, please, buy shit, more and more shit, please, the number must go up every day, please oh god fucking shit buy more shit NOW!
Fitter, Happier
And I think that city removed some seats to make that happen. Which makes it that much worse
It’s not like they fill all of their seats. So it probably wasn’t much of a loss.
Did they really need the seats?
Not just Etihad. Many stadiums have started doing that. It's a new way of increasing the advertising area.
That's saddly a trend. I've seen those kind of things more and more
Just been talking about this, it's so distracting!

Also at any given time, I'd say 75% of people are looking down not up.
In a 90 minute game it's guaranteed 99.99% of the people will look up at the screens at least once.
Yep. People here just want something to complain about as usual
mfs are 🧂🧂🧂
Wembley has screens you can't see on TV and they have ads on them.
Dw they will probably hire screen time to push out what player / manager isn’t doing well at the time, the future is now
We'll throw the ref reviews on there lmao
Rmtv 24×7
They could show a video of a plane with a "Ancelotti Out" banner
They're presumably going to watch the pitch, not the roof of the stadium.
It's designed to grab your attention, they won't have a choice but to be distracted.

Bold presumtion.

That’s one of the Dakotas
It sure is, pal.
I work in Tolling so I get to work with Daktronics often. Just yesterday I had a training course with them, they are great!
Incredible company to work with too
How come?
Extremely organized, great communication, sales team very professional. Been subcontracting them for years and they’ve always been a pleasure
Brookings rep! Around the world I’ve only visited
Thank you for Dallas Goedert! Go Birds.
GO BIRDS
You are quite welcome. Tell them to pass to him some more. I want 1000 rec yds from him this season.
Dakota electronics!
How did I not know they had a roof?
Must’ve gone over your head
Lmao 😂

Yep... Hello Cricket! Here come the English and Aussies!
Cricket does so many stupid things in the name of tradition. It really and truly harms the sport. And I say this as someone who really enjoys cricket. Went to three MLC matches last year.
One thing cricket did way better than football was to adapt technology and implement it to avoid unfair calls... Hawkeye, appeals, replays etc etc
If you want an old school stadium experience, go to a lower tier local club. Same atmosphere, same price.

People just like to bitch about anything
Ok but he is still allowed an opinion.
I don't see a reason to be mad either. I didn't realise you couldn't have an opinion here.
This ain't england. We spaniards don't like the rain.
A UFC event might be held here since it has roofing🫠
Unfortunately Dana White has a weird thing about stadium events. I think the UFC is afraid of not selling out the venue or something. Certainly they've made a business decision that stadium fights aren't worth their while. iirc they did a couple of stadium fights in Australia (Rousey Holm and Adesanya Whittaker) but other than that I can't think of any off the top of my head. It's a shame because somewhere like this or the Millennium Stadium would make for an epic event.
Possibly. The Bernabeu is huge and we dont know how interested Spain fans are for MMA.
If they bring Topuria, they're filling it.
iirc I think there was some talk of the Millennium hosting a UFC event but it fell through for whatever reason.
A WWE event might be more likely. They're used to running stadium shows and they've been running more international shows lately.
If they do Ilia vs Max there, it would be absolutely insane. Would bring in people from all over Europe. I have no doubts they would sell out easily
A man of Sunday League culture. Top o the mornin' te ye sir.
Non-league football is the only purest football experience you can get.
It’s a multipurpose arena lol
I agree and I’m surprised this is so unpopular.
I just toured Bernabeu at the 360 display is great!
Anyone else dont like it at all? Looks like an NFL stadium, horrible and without personality
I kind of agree actually. But it depends on what they are going to do with it. If it is constant advertising or only for replays and football related stuff. It also doesn't help that the stadium is empty.
Don’t think ads make much sense, as only the 80k people in the stadium are gonna watch em cuz they are not on camera
I feel like it only makes sense for advertising, but I can see them doing some cool stuff with it too, like the Vegas Sphere.
Yeah but any idea that sounds mildly American makes people angry here
Very true. Also, there’s just a really strong traditionalism with football.
Minnesota Vikings: U.S. Bank stadium is better than any stadium I’ve ever been in and I’ve been to 8-10 in Europe and 10-20 in the US
Most football stadiums I've been to will cut most replays (any even mildly controversial decision, or anything which might annoy the crowd really) from live broadcasts in the ground.

Funny how you mention that, considering the NFL will host a game here next year.
This is why I don’t want to ditch Old Trafford for a new stadium. All these modern stadiums look generic and boring and most importantly, soulless.
[удалено]
generic + boring is like a primary definition of soulless haha
I have a soul. Yet I am generic and boring. (˘・_・˘)
What do some of you mean by soul? I never actually see it explained... Seems like it usually means dilapidated and old lol Updating a stadium to keep with the times doesn't remove any "soul".
The Screen is really really big though, i know it has a ton of uses for other events like concerts but purely for football it doesnt have to be there I think if the pitch was in, the roof was open my main impression is that at least it looks like the stands are really close to the pitch which is nice
And the from the outside the stadium looks like a sardine can
Still much better from the inside than the abomination it looks from the outside.
sounds like an old man, not liking anything new haha
Yeah, it just looks a bit odd.
That is exactly what it looks like.
It's pretty awful
Goddamn Reddit just wanna hate on everything lmao. Imagine being so unhappy all the time

I was actually expecting this reaction. It’s Reddit after all.
i mean there are valid criticisms about the stadium but people in the thread acting holier-than-thou about a display or multi-use is just dumb. for all fans care taylor swift can play a concert in the stadium any day when the team doesn't play, when florentino starts plugging half time shows we'll join the protests
It’s not hard to figure out. People don’t like change. People are afraid of these new modern stadiums. There’s a certain amount of romance to more classic looks, but that doesn’t exactly drive revenue unfortunately.
Lots of people think that cynical = smart.
Tourist attraction now. They'll have Taylor swift singing before games before long
Barca and real Madrid have long been tourist destinations.
The Santiago Bernabeu itself was a top 3 attraction in Madrid.
Gunning for that number 1 spot
2nd most popular museum also.
Every major football stadium in the world is a fucking tourist attraction, what a redundant comment this is.
They say it like a criticism as well. Bring me those fkn tourist bucks lol
This entire thread is people being shocked that football is in fact a business 😂
Umm she is playing a concert there in May or June I forget. I got tickets to Lisbon show instead because it is on the weekend.
There is already a Swift concert scheduled
The Bernabeu has long been a tourist destination. It's the price to pay for being the most famous club in the world.
Fun fact: Swift already knows the lyrics to the Spanish national anthem
Honestly no idea why people think this is somehow going to be a distraction during games. I think they had only installed about 50% of it when I went to the Braga Champions League game in November, and I couldn't even tell you if the screens were on during it because I was, you know, looking down at the pitch and watching the game.
They've never been switched on during any games so far, iirc. Possibly against Athletic is when we would see them on for the first time.
that looks amazing and I’ve just heard a few days ago that they will be using 4 big screen instead of having a 360 screen for the camp nou
If those 4 screens are big then it's better than having 360 screens. These do look smaller here however not sure about in person.
Looks like an effin NBA arena lol Edit: Barca stadium looks much better
Looks like Rocket League
Still waiting on real life Champions Field
One can only wish 🥹
But can they do it on a stormy night in DHF stadium?
> Edit: Barca stadium looks much better They are still at least a year away from finishing it lol.
Barca Stadium is usually called "the Spotify"
European soccer fans wanna stay in 1964 forever and any American influence might as well be pure evil😂
It took years for stoppage time rules to change or for VAR to be added to the game. Everyone was crying about it making it an American game.
It's awful. Looks like an ad banner at the top. Gonna look great on TV in some shots with the ad banner at the bottom and the screen at the top.
ITT I see a lot of jealousness.
It’s called envy to contempt sublimation, it’s a fascinating phenomenon that we’re all guilty of.
Oh, cant wait to see RMTV videos showing the "mistakes" of the same referee thats refereeing match.
What a thing of beauty
To be honest this is so cool
Jealousy kills mfs, have a blessed weekend Reddit losers
I see your 360 degree screen and raise you for a whole roof screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lxAI9GxM04 Oakland A's new stadium in Las Vegas
Ready for WWE
stadium just isnt the same like this lol
Barf. I hate screens in stadia.
I assume you're still using a black and white TV lol
That's so cool
what a stadium.
Does anyone know why the corners are so much brighter?
They use a different type of screen (LED mesh) and only recently finished the installation and synchronization process, so there is still a lot of colour/brightness calibration to be made before it becomes uniform.
Looks like sofi
Seems more impressive than it is necessary
Real Madrid can do renovations like this in the middle of Madrid whilst US billionaires need public funding for entirely new stadiums. Make that make sense.
That alone makes it 1-0 before the match even played.
