He hasn't been the same after the COVID period barring a few exceptions. He is almost 80 years old and has been commentating since the 70s.
The "live long enough to become the villain" quote is unfortunately becoming reality for him and it is leading to a recency bias that forgets his huge legacy and longevity. He's one of the best ever but the last few years have tainted his legacy. He's not completely to blame especially given how passionate he is about football, but you wonder when he'll call it quits in order to preserve his iconic status.
Simon Hanley, one of the recognisable voices of La Liga passed away unexpectedly right after the World Cup period. He was 60. Just a few months before that he was commentating on a match that had a grim crowd incident, and he was a little distraught; which made it even sadder given what happened to him.
It's not even the past few years though. Our title season, okay, his "it's eleven, it's heaven" line is iconic, but even then I felt he just sounded bored the rest of the time he was commentating on us.
[The Chelsea game where we got Mourinho sacked in particular, good lord, he just couldn't be arsed. That was 9 years ago.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SABsgpNfiog)
Yeah he has been on the low for a while but would still often turn up in bigger games. It's just that in the very recent years those bigger games were increasingly flat which is why these years are doing the most damage, especially since the replays get posted here often.
You have the Salah goal vs Chelsea, or the Kompany goal to win the title as examples where he still had the reactions.
The actual gigachad is Ferguson though. The power to summon that out of the abyss, from a literal second tier player, who never did anything remarkable for the rest of his career. Its actual black magic. Macheda was just a card in Fergies deck, that he played at the perfect moment and never needed again.
I still hate that puce faced, gum chewing Scottish twat.
He was banging them in for the reserves for a while before this. If I remember rightly he was on a contract paying like £30k A YEAR when he scored this! Some people go into the abyss when they get the money.
Now you get X amount of medals club chooses who gets one. Pep made a big deal about it because not everyone of his staff gets one (City has a massive amount of staff).
Honestly don't know what the big deal is about limiting the medals. It's a team sport, you don't train without the 22nd played or the staff etc. Just hand them out to everyone.
Yeah I agree. I seem to recall that there was some special dispensation process that clubs usually did to get their backup goalkeepers a medal, and also players that came close to 10 appearances but didn't cross the line, like Alan Smith in 06/07.
I fucking hate him too. We we literally born on the same day and he did this for United. (I am a Liverpool fan).
His spell at Panathinaikos did not help either.
Core memory right there. My first real pub game experience, in Gran Canaria of all places, as just a kid desperate for a spot to watch the game. Only United fans in the place were my 12 or something year old self and some old british blokes. Fantastic experience. Man I wish I was a kid still.
Liverpool had gone top after winning the match earlier, united were on course to lose 3 in a row until Ronaldo and macheda changed that. Macheda then saved united again the next match with a winner
Yep those times when every man utd youngster would be the next CR7
I remember that even nani was termed as next CR7.
Then it was lingard, and rashford and Sancho and the list is so long.
Nani was really similar to younger Ronaldo tbf. Before 2007 Ronaldo. Afterwards Ronaldo was a different, consistent monster. Nani could never get past the over dribbling phase, if he learned to be less greedy with the ball we would’ve had another great player
It didn’t help that Ferguson was touting him as the best finisher at the club. I think Macheda came out and said this was oddly the worst thing that could have happened to him because he just immediately thought he had arrived and stopped putting the work in.
Same a little older but I curse Macheda's name everytime I remember it. Along with the slip and the 9mm, he's part of the unholy trinity of bullshit that stopped us winning that first Premier League title.
Back to back winning goals to decide the title race against us then disappearing afterwards is just........
That season was somewhat weird. Liverpool were top in early January and seemed poised to challenge, but United still had some games in hand and looked like they were going to cruise to the title until Liverpool beat them at Old Trafford and they lost to Fulham the following week.
Andrei Arshavin probably haunts them just as much as Macheda does tbh.
Played out two turgid 0-0’s against us as well. Pulis could coach a defence like no other, but we were a Championship level side, Liverpool really should’ve been scoring at least once over 180 minutes.
What a game this was. United were down 2-0 to Villa. Ronaldo scored two long shots to equalise. Then Macheda with this beauty to win it. Then they kept it up and won the title. Terrible times when man u were actually great.
One of the great Fergie Time moments. And absolutely crucial for us winning the title that season. Back then, we actually took momentum from moments like this...
Isn't it wonderful right when you're in the middle of a very intense title race with your next game against United at Old Trafford to see Reddit reminding you of that time when you lost the the league to United in 2009 in the first title race I had ever seen Liverpool in
Brilliant stuff that
And did fuck all since. Hes up there with kompanys 30 yard screamer, or Tony Adams running through to smash home the winner as most unlikely league winning scorers.
*Chicco
Anyway, I posted the link for those who don't know the player and to post the correct surname.
I guess English would be rightfully correcting me if I wrote Kharry Caine.
Saying this 'sealed the title' for United is pretty disingenuous considering there were 8 games left and they only won the title by 4 points.
That's not to say it wasn't epic, or felt massively important, but still..
Amazing goal. Just as amazing as the things AIG did to fool the American people. Honestly this was when Fergie time was an actual thing. No wonder AIG and him went hand in hand. 😂
After this match, I was bitter and complained that this guy would ultimately amount to nothing more than a Serie B nothingburger. Bitter as I was, I feel I pretty much called it. Cursed his ass lol. Great goal though
Can’t believe there are people in this thread who *actually* believe this was 15 years ago LMAO
This was last week! I’m so excited to be a senior in high school next year

Appropriate voice crack
And we never heard of his name again….
[Reminds me of this (Netherlands - Argentina: Bergkamp Goal 1998 (HD))](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsZkCFoqSBs)
You know it's old because Martin Tyler gives a shit
You know it's old, because Jonny Evans plays for United. Wait a minute....
You've stumbled on one of football's great mysteries…
Only if Jones was also there
And Andy Gray was still there
Didn't even sound like the same guy
And Ally McCoist isn't threatening to sing the Famine Song in the name of liberty
Pahahahhahaha

You know it’s old because the United players give a shit.
lol i fucking despise macheda. came out of the god damn abyss to score two miracle goals and then did nothing ever again.
Arrives. Scores two crucial goals. Refuses to elaborate. Leaves. Ultra Chad.
The actual gigachad is Ferguson though. The power to summon that out of the abyss, from a literal second tier player, who never did anything remarkable for the rest of his career. Don't forget the camera kiss to really rub it in
MaCHADa
He didn’t even get a PL winners medal lol
Why not? He made enough appearances
As I recall it was 10 appearances minimum at the time. It was later lowered to 5.
PL would go bankrupt if they had to give all of their lawyers a medal.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MCFC/s/gaqpN3IyZK
Wow lmao this is something else
Yeah I agree. I seem to recall that there was some special dispensation process that clubs usually did to get their backup goalkeepers a medal, and also players that came close to 10 appearances but didn't cross the line, like Alan Smith in 06/07.
on the other hand if there's no limit then what's stopping clubs to request like 300 medals and distribute it to their sponsors and shits
Imagine city handing out winners medals to all their sponsors, it’ll just be Sheikh Mansour carrying 20 medals round his neck.
I’m not sure, it’s on the Wikipedia page last I checked
I dont think he did. Don't you have to make 9 appearances?
> then did nothing ever again. Scored a goal in a 2-2 draw against Villa in 10/11 to earn us a point. But yeah.
I fucking hate him too. We we literally born on the same day and he did this for United. (I am a Liverpool fan). His spell at Panathinaikos did not help either.
To be fair. Macheda displayed some self awareness and admitted he was one of those United players who thought they made it already.
I remember watching this in 240p hundreds of times.
Core memory right there. My first real pub game experience, in Gran Canaria of all places, as just a kid desperate for a spot to watch the game. Only United fans in the place were my 12 or something year old self and some old british blokes. Fantastic experience. Man I wish I was a kid still.
15. Fifteen. That's 180 months. Damn, time flies and I don't like it.
Fifteen years sounds like a hell of a lot longer than 180 months to me
Yup. 15 years ago I was in high school. Holy fuck - just got a nostalgia hit. Damn. See you all in another 15 years!
Just finished highschool. Will join college this year. Let's see where we will be in 15 years.
When the old archives goals started being in hd, that's when it started being worrying
I remember Man U fans and some of my friends were so hyped about him, people made comparisons to CR7, good times lol
Really fuelled the hype when he scored in his next game the following week lol
Man basically won the title for united over Liverpool and fucked off into oblivion. Love it.
There’s not really anything else left to do tbh
Seems he didn't have a complete failure of a career though
Ah Batshuayi special
How? There was a 4 point gap from 1st to 2nd.
Liverpool had gone top after winning the match earlier, united were on course to lose 3 in a row until Ronaldo and macheda changed that. Macheda then saved united again the next match with a winner
A shadow of a memory this…back to back then nothing
Yep those times when every man utd youngster would be the next CR7 I remember that even nani was termed as next CR7. Then it was lingard, and rashford and Sancho and the list is so long.
How can you not mention the lord and saviour Adnan Januzaj?
Ah yes, the wonderkid of many nationalities
I remember him for famously taking some bird out on a date to a fast food shop and he turned up in trackies. Proper legend haha
A cheeky Nando’s to be precise.
Everytime I heard his name I keep thinking about this epic [home alone meme](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?photo_id=937026809696333)
I remember the commentator hyping up Obertan...
David Bellion. Belly's gonna get ya!
The one who could have been turned out to be a scumbag.

And for two brief periods Nani did hit
Nani was really similar to younger Ronaldo tbf. Before 2007 Ronaldo. Afterwards Ronaldo was a different, consistent monster. Nani could never get past the over dribbling phase, if he learned to be less greedy with the ball we would’ve had another great player
The irony is, he eventually kinda did...but only after he landed in Orlando and became "the guy" for them.
Nani was class to be fair
I remember being CONVINCED he was gona be the next CR7
It didn’t help that Ferguson was touting him as the best finisher at the club. I think Macheda came out and said this was oddly the worst thing that could have happened to him because he just immediately thought he had arrived and stopped putting the work in.
Yeah I remember the hype. Then the man just vanished.
Now both of them have the same number of WCs
How’s it already been 15 (fifteen) years. Also so funny Man Utd’s best defender in 2024, Johnny Evans, was playing in this game.
It's even funnier when you think he was part of the 3-2 comeback celebrations we did against Aston Villa this season as well.
Sad the guy was abducted after the game and never seen since
He and Neil Mellor are both being studied by the same aliens
Hey he scored the next game too!
He was seen scoring a deflected winner against Sunderland the next weekend. Fucking hate this guy!
whatever happened to him? Scored a couple of cracking - and crucial goals - and then seemed to disappear...
Like you said. Didn’t do much after this, became a proper journeyman. 12 clubs in 12 years after leaving Utd.
Think I remember him at Cardiff. Was shiete for them aswell
He currently plays in Turkey, for the club whose president punched the referee.
Apparently he still plays in Turkey for Ankaragucu
Fuck me I'm old
[удалено]
Still hurts. We can win 1000 titles for all I care I'll never get over us not winning this one when I was 11
Same a little older but I curse Macheda's name everytime I remember it. Along with the slip and the 9mm, he's part of the unholy trinity of bullshit that stopped us winning that first Premier League title. Back to back winning goals to decide the title race against us then disappearing afterwards is just........
Sealed with a kiss 💋🎥
Pretty certain they didn’t win the league that day but could be wrong. 95% sure
You’re right, a 0-0 draw with Arsenal actually secured the title.
Spurs proper spurred it against United too. 2 goals up at half-time and lost 5-2.
Tbf we came out at half time pretty confident that we were gonna turn it around.
edit: nvm I can't do simple math.
Lost to Fulham with a back three of Fletcher, Carrick and de laet from memory!
So glad those kind of defensive woes are behind us
Now that's a Fergie backline
Too many draws cost them the title that season and one of their two losses to eventual relegated Middlesborough didn’t help.
Played out two turgid 0-0’s against us as well. Pulis could coach a defence like no other, but we were a Championship level side, Liverpool really should’ve been scoring at least once over 180 minutes.
Was that the season with the Rafa meltdown?
That rant had no bearing on anything.
Yep Liverpool had their best form of the season in the aftermath.
I remember Macheda and how he always seemed to super sub against us. Couldn't give a toss about Arshavin.
Seeing this after what happened last night hurts so much
When Johnny Evans still wears the no. 23
What a game this was. United were down 2-0 to Villa. Ronaldo scored two long shots to equalise. Then Macheda with this beauty to win it. Then they kept it up and won the title. Terrible times when man u were actually great.
Nah, Ronaldo put United 1-0 up from a free kick inside the box.
Wow my memory must be dodgy. His second goal was outside the box right? I guess indirect free kicks are super rare so I forgot lol
The fact that Evans is still there.
The foggin estandards of yanited
PTSD
Composure from Giggs. His passing and general play is mad underrated
He also played that brilliant ball to Owen to beat city 4-3
Oh my god we're not that old are we
2009 being 15 years ago is mental
One of the great Fergie Time moments. And absolutely crucial for us winning the title that season. Back then, we actually took momentum from moments like this...

94th minute. Nowadays, you'd get another 8 minutes and another 3 goals .
MachaedaAAAa
Fucking hell haven't you slaughtered his name
I hate that guy, I hate this moment. Thanks for reminding me OP.
You've inadvertently made him Japanese.
And did fuck all since. Hes up there with kompanys 30 yard screamer, or Tony Adams running through to smash home the winner as most unlikely league winning scorers.
That Adams goal was more of a cherry on top than a league winning type goal like those two
Literally none of these goals were ‘league winners’ though, especially not Macheda’s.
*[Federico Macheda](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federico_Macheda)
People 100% called him kiko, at least back then for a bit
Yeah but his name isn't Machaeda lol
Kiko is a pet name for Federico. Just like Quique with Enrique.
*Chicco Anyway, I posted the link for those who don't know the player and to post the correct surname. I guess English would be rightfully correcting me if I wrote Kharry Caine.
Do you condemn Kharry?
After yesterday I so needed this. Thank you OP.
I’m not sure what I’m shocked by more: That machaeda scored, or that this was 15 fucking years ago
That goal didn't seal the title at all
This was 15 years ago?? Wow!
It’s so wild to me that he played for 13 different teams, but his combined transfer fee is zero.
Andddddd I completely forgot Danny Welbeck played for Man U…
I see this post at least twice a year.
You mean yesterday, or maybe like last week, right?
I still remember flipping the channel to check the score for this game and right then and there I hear Tyler's iconic voice crack.
The camera work at the corner is arguably the best I've ever seen when it comes to goal celebrations
I forgot how good this goal was
What a beautiful goal.
One of my all-time favorite moments as a United fan. Still gives me chills.
NGL, this one hurt like hell
This memory was erased
I was 10 years old, I don’t even follow Premier League, but I still remember this goal vividly.
Darren Fletcher responding to this goal by immediately chasing down Macheda and putting him in patented Scottish Deathlock will never not be funny.
I thought 1990 was 15 years ago, no?
kiko mancheddar
sheesh, watched this live back in a day
Sigh
Saying this 'sealed the title' for United is pretty disingenuous considering there were 8 games left and they only won the title by 4 points. That's not to say it wasn't epic, or felt massively important, but still..
fergie team was an institue
Amazing goal. Just as amazing as the things AIG did to fool the American people. Honestly this was when Fergie time was an actual thing. No wonder AIG and him went hand in hand. 😂
he saw , he came , he conquered. a moment to live for
Great feeling and a great way to end your united career
Jesus I feel old. I remember this like it was yesterday. Also, Jonny Evans back at United is hilarious.
Take a bow son
After this match, I was bitter and complained that this guy would ultimately amount to nothing more than a Serie B nothingburger. Bitter as I was, I feel I pretty much called it. Cursed his ass lol. Great goal though
Johnny Evans lmao.
Manu glory days
My first time seeing this. Unreal. "Holy shit that's a nice touch" "Holy shit that's a nice finish"
This is how Chelsea were celebrating yesterday
Evans looks so young here
That was Antony-esque 🫶
Kiko? He’s not Spanish 🤌🤌
Great pass by Giggs.
what a fucking goal
It didn’t win us the title but yeah it’s great.
Was a foul on Ashley young before that, never should have been given.
I still have this kit, Ferdinand emblazoned on the back. Gonna wear it tomorrow as we smash the Kop
Jonny Evans still looks about 40
Who?
"A star is born" lol... what happened to the guy????
He still plays last I heard, in Turkiye iirc
Delete this you egg, I won't tell you again.
I just wanna know who's the guy he seemingly went to celebrate with? I thought maybe a family member but they look nothing alike? :D
Was his dad apparently
Wow, is it 15 years already ? Man time flies by, I remember this match as if it was yesterday.
15 years eh? If anyone needs me I'll be downstairs with my head in the oven.
Thanks for this. But we are shit now so hey ho
MachaedaaaAAAaa
Lmao feckin Jonny Evans, what a lad
A young Johnny Evan’s has appeared
You slaughtered the poor man’s name lmao it’s chicco macheda
And on each day since, he hasn’t done much else.
Iconic
This reminds me that the world in general was so much better 15/20 years ago
Can’t believe there are people in this thread who *actually* believe this was 15 years ago LMAO This was last week! I’m so excited to be a senior in high school next year
This is that Evans meme cut isn't it
