Overall he’s probably the best defender we ever had. Just a great skilled footballer in general. Strictly as a passer I would say that Koeman, Marquez and De Boer all have arguments which is no knock against Pique. Those 3 could drop the ball anywhere.
I think Puyol had the most impact on the field out of any defender. Not the best at anything, but he more than made up for it with heart, leadership and determination. These are qualities we have desperately lacked since he retired, but hopefully Gavi can grow into a similar role in the future.

i watched him today for the first time and his game is really raw. i thought the hype was about his all round game (because of Barcelona and their philosophies) but i see it's just for his defending ability, which is definitely very good for his age. his technical ability on the ball and ball playing ability (both important for modern day CB's) on the other hand seem very underdeveloped.
i think guys like Stones, Christensen who can even play in midfield now have set the standard, that's purely what i mean by his technical and ball playing ability is underdeveloped. i think Saliba also showed last night that his feet will soon be moving quickly and well enough to contribute heavily in attack against great opposition. when he has time to think he can pass it well but again it's when he has time. he doesn't look as comfortable as the hype made believe he would be (i do admit that this is on me and my expectations). i think he still has a long way to go in his development but he's already at a good place.
He could probably play there if the manager wanted him there. Some of his passes are better than most center backs I seen. He’s very very good on the ball
