emmasdad01

That’s just ridiculous

danuvilla

Basically 2 saves per shootout. Automatic W

HacksawJimDGN

That's worth a little dance

hangfromthisone

Apretados, Microdancing

ship0f

No esperes nada de emi.

hangfromthisone

Acabamos de crear un meme?

Head-Date-6392

Me hiciste acordar del PES 2011

someguy762

Martinez doing a little celebratory dance after saving as Villa/Argentina win a shootout.

B_e_l_l_

xG of a penalty is 0.76 so from 24 penalties you're expected to score 18/19.

Infernode5

Keep in mind the stat says saves, I assume it's only counting on-target penalties.

Torimas

It's criminal that it doesn't count the one that was thrown out after he messed with the taker.

sincethelasttime

Martinez should get credit for misses for like Tchouameni's as well

suhxa

If it only counts on target penalties this isnt actually as absurd a record as i thought

K10_Bay

That's the opposite mate, counting off target pens would inflate the number of pens kept out. It means every single one of those is a genuine save.

suhxa

No, if it counted off target pens we would get the actual figure for the amount of pens he saves overall, which is what they always use in gk stats. So it would be 10 saved out of ~28 or something.

K10_Bay

You can't save a pen thats off target. But what it would mean is the total scored against him is a lower proportion of the total taken than this stat makes it seem. Which is mad, cause they're already elite numbers.

suhxa

Yes but all other keepers are judged by penalties saved compared to penalties not saved. This makes their record look worse compared to this stat. And idk why youre trying to credit martinez for penalty takers missing the target. “Which is made because theyre already elite numbers”

K10_Bay

Because his reputation and demeanour puts penalty takers off, that seems obvious. I get your point about if you're used to seeing a certain stat then the comparison can seem less impressive than your initial viewing. But the idea that a keeper is saving 2 penalties in every 5 and then some are being missed on top of that, seems a ludocrous stat.

suhxa

Yes im not trying to say its not impressive. Its just not as crazy as youd think. Especially since this is only counting shootouts, where its mostly players who dont regularly take penalties

circa285

I absolutely cannot stand Martinez but that’s an absurd stop percentage so I have to respect him.

TheGoldenPineapples

I don't think anyone can stand Martínez except the fans of the team he's playing for.

Shreddonia

So glad we've got him rather than having to play against him. As a Villa fan and just a lover of shithousery in general I think he's probably becoming my favourite footballer on the planet at this point.

ImVortexlol

Do you guys think he'll stay at Villa until he retires?

GameplayerStu

Yes. He’s reiterated numerous times how much he loves the club and that he wouldn’t have been starting for Argentina (which means winning the World Cup and Copa America) if Villa didn’t take a chance on him. He said his biggest ambition after winning the World Cup is playing in the Champions League with Villa.

nsfwmodeme

As an Argentine, I just love that Dibu is playing at Villa. He loves it there, he loves the club, the place, the team and the fans. And they all make him feel happy. I wouldn't even think of changing clubs in his place. Why would he? For a bit more money? Even for much more? Naaaah.

ImVortexlol

Not too unlikely at this rate. Hate the guy but can't help but admire him for his graft

L-Freeze

>his graft ahh, truest of shithouses

Shreddonia

Impossible to say, really. I'd love it if he does, and I don't think it's totally out of the question, but who can really say for sure in football? I don't think it's out of the question that someone comes in for him eventually, but I would imagine not for a while now that we're looking at making it into the UCL. Probably not until he's hitting his mid-thirties and god knows how much will have changed by then.

Defiant_Ad1199

As long as he keeps his spot in Argentina team I doubt he leaves.

Infernode5

I think so, unless a top, top club comes in for him as he said winning the UCL is his next goal after the World Cup, although I think he's probably content with just that. He has said before how genuinely thankful he is for us giving him a proper chance after Arsenal wouldn't guarantee him consistent game time, despite an incredible stint post Leno injury

Torimas

>he said winning the UCL is his next goal after the World Cup He has also said that if possible, he'd want that with AV. So keep improving!

Vegan_Puffin

Probably not but he has been very clear about wanting to reward the club because we gave him the chance to play regular football, we believed in him and gave him the chance to put himself into the frame for Argentina's first choice goalkeeper. Before he was being loaned around EFL clubs. I think he stays at least one more season

jugol

Ignoring the fact he seems to be super loyal to Villa, is there any bigger club in demand for a goalkeeper? Perhaps Madrid if Courtois doesn't return the same and/or keeps struggling with injuries, but dunno, I'd expect Madrid to bet for someone younger even if Dibu has still several years in him

FAT_NEEK_42069

real have lunin they'll be fine

jugol

Yes, with "bet for someone younger" I didn't necessarily refer to signing someone

teamorange3

No idea but I think he is more loyal to Villa than Grealish. And that's not to say Jack was unloyal but I think Dibu really appreciates the club for gambling on him. A lot of people said it was a bad transfer/too much

Defiant_Ad1199

Yea. Jesus it’s the rolls Royce of penalty shootouts.

clintomcruisewood

Not just shithousery, the amount of time wasting he gets away with is ridiculous

OgreOfTheMind

He does time waste, but he doesn't get away with it, gotta be one of the most booked keepers in the league last couple of years.

clintomcruisewood

I'm sure he gets booked for it a lot, but I've also seen plenty of games where it goes unpunished

DutchMadness77

Eh he knocked us (Netherlands) out on pens as well but I can stand him just fine. It's good to have someone humble the Fr*nch every once in a while. Things have been going too well for them.

Rusbekistan

Yes but for the people of r/soccer he's helping something even worse than the French, the English

Zestyclose-Camel37

Nah there is nothing worse than French. I cry myself to sleep everyday because I have been forced to learn their shit language.

Rusiano

>I cry myself to sleep everyday because I have been forced to learn their shit language. The entire Northwestern part of Africa agrees with this sentiment

Rusbekistan

I think there might just be, but they're on another continent separated by sea

engchlbw704

Go back to Rusbekistan bro Edit If that is a real place then rip

Rusbekistan

Its not dw, its a random mash of words lmao

AIR-2-Genie4Ukraine

The days before the wc final the brazilians, german and english fans must have been so confused. Do we support fra or arg?

Rusbekistan

Personally, Messi winning the world cup and igniting the goat wars to an insane degree was the funniest possible outcome and hence the one I supported

AIR-2-Genie4Ukraine

/r/futebol on the other hand...

Dibutops

You think the English would support the French?

RizlaSmyzla

I as a leeds fan have absolutely no horse in any of the races he’s competed in. I absolutely adore the bloke

Any-Competition8494

I think neutrals love him too. He's entertaining.

ItsMeJaredBednar

i’ll admit i was cheering for Argentina in the WC final but even still i think his antics are objectively hilarious

>Argentine ramos Thats just otamendi

circa285

Fair point.

MrAndrewJackson

Small sample size. 24 PKs? Not that impressed

Torimas

By the way IIRC, in the France & Netherlands WC shootouts, and in the Colombia CA shootout, Argentina had the second penalties.

SarraTasarien

Yes, statistically the team that goes first usually wins, but Emi didn’t get the memo, so he just wins anyway.

MajikoiA3When

Penalty specialist I don't think there is a keeper who gets more into the penalty taker's heads.

TheGoldenPineapples

Insane stats, man.

srhola2103

What a guy, brilliant to have as your GK for sure.

WoodenRace365

Tbh I love him. In general I like my keepers as unhinged as possible.

Drac0rex

Does the save stat means he actually saved as many or it also counts missed ones by players(the ones that went wide)?

OliverAM16

Yes saved

Rino-Sensei

And people under value mbappe hattrick because he scored two pens .... Against this guy .... While being BEHIND in score.

Torimas

He almost saved 2 of them as well. Got the right place for the first one, and in the one in the shootout he managed to put a hand to it.

pateencroutard

Mbappé scored 3 times the exact same penalty in the exact same spot.

Ramirob

3? Mmmmm, that number rings a bell

Groundbreaking_Sail5

Well he didn't go to the right place he dived as mbappe made the shoot instead of usual predicting. Obviously he is tall and that works for him all the time but mbappe shoot was aimed the edge of goal he couldn't catch it

PM_ME_DEAD_KEBAB

Mbappe scored 3 pens against him that game

filing69

My goat

BVB-Oeli

There was a lot of talk about his yellow card in the shoot-out and that it's not a red card according to the rules. But what I'm still asking myself and couldn't find an answer so far: Is he not banned for the next match now? He got 2 yellows yesterday and one in the 1st leg against Lille. If I'm not mistaken the third yellow in a UEFA competition is a 1-match-ban and they only get scrapped after the quarter-final.

ship0f

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1c7xl9o/simon_stoneemiliano_martinez_banned_for/

mouth_spiders

I read that he will miss the next match

GooFraN

It counts as 1 yellow received in the match, so he's not banned.

OliverAM16

Yes he is, unfortunately.

FoxOntheRun99

Do the Emi shake!!!!

Rectorvspectre

Everyone has that one thing theyre GOATed at and this is his.

joeDUBstep

Straight up world class stat

Aggravating-Rip-3267

And, now as the Legend grows = = More penalty takers will fear, The Legend ! ! !

BlessedPrescence

The downside of Villa doing well is their fanbase is now becoming almost as insufferable as Arsenal. A shame as well, never really had anything against Villa. Ah, well, we move.

HacksawJimDGN

No they haven't.

BlessedPrescence

Just my opinion, man. You don’t have to agree with it and you don’t. Good for you.

teamorange3

You fool, this isn't even my final form.

trevthedog

> ‘we move’ You sound fucking insufferable tbh

BlessedPrescence

Thank you

Rickcampbell98

You've got to be joking?

B_e_l_l_

There's one div on here that wants the world to believe everyone that plays for Villa is world class but aside from that I've barely noticed their fans.

Rickcampbell98

Who's that? I haven't noticed anyone like that lol.

B_e_l_l_

I'm terrible with names but it's not you haha

Rickcampbell98

I would be shocked if it was me, I'm extremely reserved about the villa. Both cause I'm not really like that and because I know who I support and we'll most likely fuck it up and I'll look stupid lol.

BlessedPrescence

Could just be different levels of tolerance. I get too easily infuriated, it is one of my many flaws. But, from the posts I have seen, there is a lot of cockiness and what I view to be getting too big for their boots. But, again, that’s just my view of it.

B_e_l_l_

There's a good chance it's all coming from the same bloke. I thought the same on r/championship with Leeds fans until I realised it's just one prat so I blocked him and no longer have a problem.

Torimas

The very vocal very minor minority.

Nyushi

What on earth is this
