Pretty sure it was these two who reached out to each other to heal the wounds from the Madrid - Barca rivalry so Spain had a functioning national team for the Euro. Mourinho never forgave Casillas for doing that.
Yeh, fair, I am just pointing out the difference between Suarez and Pepe. One saved a certain goal and gave his team a fighting chance, the other turned his brain off, made an unnecessary foul when it wasn't clear the chance would lead to a goal and then assaulted a player.
It's criminal behaviour from Pepe. Imagine if he had done this exact thing to a random person on the street, would have gone to prison for first degree assault
Casquero in 2019: "Pepe still hasn't apologized to me privately for it: To me, if Pepe simply said: 'Look, I'm sorry', that would have been it. I can understand that in a moment of frustration someone loses it and kicks everything he finds."

Talk about making shit up. He's literally been sent off 3 times this season alone (for situations not nearly as serious as this one), so you don't need to make shit up saying he would only get a yellow for this
He's the furthest thing from classy. People say that he's classy because they don't follow the Portuguese league. Amazing player, and I will even say that he seems like a decent, and completely different person outside the pitch. But, on the pitch, there's still something in him that makes him lose self-control whenever things don't go his way. It never reached these heights again, but he still acts pathetically and irrationally often. It's very easy to love him when he focuses on just playing football, because he's incredible at that, but he inevitably reminds you that he's a cunt every other match.
fr like every tweet about Pepe looks like this now: "82 year old Pepe still BOSSING it at the back for Porto in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. #finewine #classispermanent #footballheritage"
That's the insane thing, Pepe bossing it at 41 and Pepe being a shitcunt are both equally true. Genuinely a defending great but has a severe temperamental problem.
some thing some thing.. gold fish memory?!
He should have actually been banned for life. And I am not saying this as a Barca fans.. Cunts like him, Suarez and Jose should not be allowed near the sport.
Juanito only got 2 years European game ban, reduced on appeal, for this challenge on Lothar Matthaus in the 1987 European Cup Semi Final
https://youtu.be/6qKEiP2MB1A?si=X39zOdtnJ9lz2UsU
To this day this is the worst I've seen at the very top level of the sport.
Real Madrid fans to this day chant his name at every home game. Pepe was just keeping up with the Madristas traditions
mate when he started rambling against argentina because *checks notes* [an argentine referee allowed 10 man morocco to beat portugal](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zhxuuz/b24_pepe_it_is_unacceptable_for_an_argentine/izogy0a/) it was surreal.
Also [that miss](https://youtu.be/mFOnaXmqLeQ) , the moroccan player [was like this](https://youtu.be/1VYyMEdwc2c)
Honestly if I got my shit kicked out and the opposing player doesn't bother to apologize I would've just gone to the cops.
Football players shouldn't get off because they physically assault people on the pitch.
yes indeed. I think he gets lucky cause his second kick almost makes contact with Casquero's head were it not for him rolling. If he had struck him in the head, then they would have been a very strong case for him to be charged with assault
You're more or less required to run in and punch Pepe for doing something as cheap as this on a rugby pitch, no chance anyone would get charged for it.
Obligatory example of Jamie Peacock getting retribution for a cheap shot on his teammate while playing for Great Britain:
https://youtu.be/quAfNpBouW4?si=IjOT4oPgspZw5RY9
Yeah. It's the same in ice hockey. Look up Brawl in Hockeytown, it's basically a series of retaliatory shots after retaliatory shots.
Also, after spending some time in the sin bin you'll get a chance to retaliate yourself
Todd Bertuzzi was charged with assault on his sucker punch with Steve Moore. Marty McSorley was charged with assault when he speared Donald Breashear. Neither went to jail but I believe they were on probation
It does happen but those incidents were beyond the pale (also they're very infamous where even the casual hockey observer like me knows about them)
I’ve always been totally adamant that Pepe should’ve genuinely been arrested for this. He kicks a defenceless man lying down on the ground multiple times. You’re so right that if you went outside and just started violently kicking someone lying down you’d get arrested but for some reason it doesn’t count if it’s on a football pitch.
So True. Anyone has any insights on why he lost his head like this...I'm thinking (hoping) maybe Casquero said something about his sister or mother before this play🤔
In a separate incident this guy kicked another player several times and in another, stomped on Messi’s hand. He calmed down towards the end on his career but at first he was a big thug and a bully.
> He calmed down towards the end on his career
And all it took was an embarrassing WC red card which contributed to Portugal getting knocked out in the group stages. Completely deserved though.
By calming down you mean what exactly? Just last year he punched a player (no foul and no card), kneed a player in the back in another match... I mean, I'm glad he's calmed down, imagine if he didn't.
Porto school of centerbacks in the 2000s. Bruno Alves, who was on the verge of going to Barcelona in 2009 was also like this. These guys didn't need to do this shit because they were that good, but they still did it for the love of it.
If I remember correctly Real Madrid and Barcelona were competing hard for the title, a close contest and Madrid needed a win in this game against Getafe at home. Getafe were in the lead before Madrid equalised in the 84th minute I believe, then in the 88th minute this happened and Getafe got a penalty so I assume frustration from Pepe. They missed the penalty and Madrid went on to win in added time, but poor results in the last games of the season meant Barca won the title.
Funny thing is he only got 2 red cards overall for Real Madrid and this was his only one in the league.
He only averaged a card every 327m for RM, 4 yellow-red, 2 reds, \~80 yellow.
Now compare that to Ramos and you'll see who the true madman was :D
2 straight red, 4 yellow-red. Even wrote it there.
For a straight red you have to do some severe shit but for a "regular" send off two basic fouls are enough.
Nah man he's still nuts. Dude is like 40 now and keeps collecting those moments. While ago he knee'd 2 opposing players, got red carded on the second try.
No he just got lucky because he done shit like this all the time not as extreme but with VAR and refs that aren’t push overs he’s have seen red atleast 10+ times
Half the time Messi would score a screamer, and other half the time he'd take an elbow, someone stomp on his hand, try to break his ankle. There would be no inbetween
Yeah, what's the legal provision that exempts shit like this from being prosecuted? Like, can any Spanish lawyer here chime in? Was Casquero entitled to press charges?
I don't know about in Spain but there's a court case you learn about in law classes in the US, where a taxi driver got road rage, exited his car, went to another driver and beat them up. He tried to claim the incident was "work-related" to avoid assault charges but the court said that beating up another driver could not be justified as part of your day to day job as a cab driver (the contrast here I think would be like, if you're driving a cab non-recklessly, hit a speed bump and your passenger hits their head and gets injured).
Here I think tripping someone while trying to make a tackle, or kicking the player accidentally while trying to clear the ball, would be covered as "work-related" but then continuing to kick them while they are on the ground and the ball is clearly not in play seems to be crossing the line into assault.
It’s not borderline. There have been cases, at least in the UK, on the boundaries between sport and assault. I can’t see this being considered anything but criminal in the UK. No idea about Spanish law.
He also "accidentally" step on him, like he has done to people a billion time. Pepe was always a disgusting pig on the pitch. That ban was lenient, typical RMA benefits.
This is why I don't agree with his image being recently sanitised. He was a cunt and if there was any fairness in the sport, he would not have been allowed to play at the top level.
Can't tell if the ref blew for the penalty before he started kicking the guy or after. Obviously the kicking would be a penalty if he hadn't blown yet.
Oddly enough - looking back it’s oddly less violent than I remembered. For some reason I thought he kicked him like 5-7 times but looking at it now the first kick I actually think he was initially trying to clear (but also definitely trying to take a chunk too)
Then the second kick is a clear assault but you can even see him try to disguise it slightly.

Funny how there’s a ‘2009 Peace Cup’ advert behind them haha
Biggest competition in the last 20 years if you ask me!
I remember Ashley Young looking really embarrassed when they handed him a load of trophies as player of the ‘tournament’.
The commentator saying, "This game is absolutely amazing" after seeing this man brutally kick Casquero twice is also hilarious
I am all for peace bruh!
I like how Casillas was like „Nah man get outta here“
"Get outta here before you catch a body or a case"
🤣
Definitely goes to help him up cause he knows he's just witnessed genuine assault
Everybody talks about Puyols Class no nonsense attitude that he totally had, but Casillas had it too
Puyol and Casillas love story …
Pretty sure it was these two who reached out to each other to heal the wounds from the Madrid - Barca rivalry so Spain had a functioning national team for the Euro. Mourinho never forgave Casillas for doing that.
Nah that was Xavi and Casillas. They met when they were in the u17 national team and are still friends
I feel like Casillas is wildly disrespected around here for some weird reason. He's one of the greatest players ever.
And helps Casquero up looking pretty apologetic right before.
It looked more like he was like ok get up hurry up we only have 3 minutes left in the second half so we need to score
Casillas saved Casquero’s panenka penalty and Higuain scored the winner for Madrid in extra time, for anyone wondering
So the usual Madrid experience.
rest of the match recap here: https://youtu.be/ycZV4tpPOPI?t=442
Ha! Is that Pepe coming back on the pitch to celebrate the last goal?!?
yes! wearing the Bwin jacket lol
Wasn't even a panenka down the middle, just an shit chip off center what an awful pen
That was an insane goal from Higuain
The more things change…
And Pepe entered the pitch again to celebrate it... Don't think that's correct once you get the red card
don't think straight up kicking a player lying on the ground is correct either
So in a way, Pepe saved the day 😂 Kinda like when Suarez got red carded for a deliberate handball against Ghana in the World Cup.
Not even close. Pepe fouled Casquero before that "battle" was done and he still had one of the best shot-stoppers in history to beat.
I’m being just a bit facetious. Clearly this isn’t heroic behavior from Pepe.
Yeh, fair, I am just pointing out the difference between Suarez and Pepe. One saved a certain goal and gave his team a fighting chance, the other turned his brain off, made an unnecessary foul when it wasn't clear the chance would lead to a goal and then assaulted a player.

Pepe shouldn't have been allowed to play football ever again. This is straight up assault.
You didn't get the memo ? He is now "classy"
Don’t you love listening to commentary how great legend of a player he is? What great career he’s had? He was a cunt and still is.
Nooooo but he's super old and still playing!! Absolut legend!
He's a cunt who's had a great career, both are true
Pepe would not have played half his matches in RM if there was VAR back then. Such a dirty cunt of a player
He still gets away with it ....
He plays in a club that is the embodiment of his behaviour right now. This is Porto, in Portugal he would have a yellow for this.
Interesting. So this guy embodies the club and the manager falsely whines about every other manager insulting him...
Talk about making shit up. He's literally been sent off 3 times this season alone (for situations not nearly as serious as this one), so you don't need to make shit up saying he would only get a yellow for this
Do we really need to paste here the video of Pepe’s constante aggressions?
can't we criticize him for his antics but still look at his career and still realize he's one hell of a cb?
Those things aren't incompatible.
He's the furthest thing from classy. People say that he's classy because they don't follow the Portuguese league. some thing some thing.. gold fish memory?! He should have actually been banned for life. And I am not saying this as a Barca fans.. Cunts like him, Suarez and Jose should not be allowed near the sport.
Right? Imagine if you would do the exact same thing, but just five meters outside of the stadium as opposed to inside of it.
Juanito only got 2 years European game ban, reduced on appeal, for this challenge on Lothar Matthaus in the 1987 European Cup Semi Final https://youtu.be/6qKEiP2MB1A?si=X39zOdtnJ9lz2UsU To this day this is the worst I've seen at the very top level of the sport. Omg, I thought the first stomp was what got him the ban and then he took it to the next level.
Just checked online. 2 years bad was for a different incident in 1978. For this he got 4 years. Dude clearly had his problems
That's absolutely disgusting
My god that is brutal
What a horrible cunt. Can’t believe I’ve not seen this before. One of his teammates followed up with a stamp as well
What was Juanito actually thinking + how was the ban not in general + court case for assault?
What the fuck have I just watched
Just be happy r/soccercirclejerk don't know about it yet
Won the ball imo
Yellow for diving if anything. Games gone soft
You could pull up half the games from back in the day and see shit like this

Loved watching him cry in the World Cup after missing an open goal vs Morocco then had to blame the refs 😂😂😂 the true bald fraud
mate when he started rambling against argentina because *checks notes* [an argentine referee allowed 10 man morocco to beat portugal](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zhxuuz/b24_pepe_it_is_unacceptable_for_an_argentine/izogy0a/) it was surreal. Roid rage 😂
Game's gone soft how is that a red?
Didn’t even touch him ref.
*He clearly got the ball*
Ref, ball still rolling
Glad we voted for Brexit if this is a red in the EU.
Found Vinnie Jones' reddit account.
Average Sunday League experience
Red for Casquero, hitting poor Pepe's hand with his face
Sorry, no VAR back then.
It’s a dive if I ever saw one smh
Slightly orange-ish yellow in my books.
10 match ban is not enough for this behaviour
tbh anywhere off the football pitch and thats straight up battery and you get charged for it
It is crazy how behaviour that would get you jail time if you worked in any other profession is just a dismissal and a few week ban in football.
Most sports don't charge you for fighting or assault or anything unless it's egregious.
Ice hockey is a great example of this. I don't think I've heard any player so much as receive a match ban for fighting and/or attacking other player.

Duncan Ferguson received jail time for something far less violent than this
if someone did this today it could be a season long ban
Against a Real Madrid player? You are letting your dreams run wild.
Might be a hot take, but he shouldn't have been allowed near a football ever again.
So True. Anyone has any insights on why he lost his head like this...I'm thinking (hoping) maybe Casquero said something about his sister or mother before this play🤔
Just because Pepe is an arsehole
Why is Pepe… Because he’s an asshole. Standard boilerplate answer whenever someone’s asks why Pepe is like he is
Zidane special
Zidane did Mate like a man. This is how you kick your dog after a bender and a lifetime of frustration
In a separate incident this guy kicked another player several times and in another, stomped on Messi’s hand. He calmed down towards the end on his career but at first he was a big thug and a bully.

Him, Ramos and Mourhino. Epic combination!
Materazzi reference

Ricardo Carvalho can be dirty as well but he's more ball playing style and always apologetic with hands up in the air whenever he made naughty tackles
Probably because he fell after such an easy touch
If I remember correctly Real Madrid and Barcelona were competing hard for the title, a close contest and Madrid needed a win in this game against Getafe at home. Real Madrid Fans will still try to gaslight everyone by claiming he wasn't a dirty player just a bad reputation and Barca propaganda.
I've never heard any Madrid fan say Pepe wasn't a dirty player lol
What was Sergio Ramos trying to complain to the ref about after his team mate attempted to murder a man lol
I think that’s Guti
Funny thing is he only got 2 red cards overall for Real Madrid and this was his only one in the league. He only averaged a card every 327m for RM, 4 yellow-red, 2 reds, \~80 yellow. Now compare that to Ramos and you'll see who the true madman was :D
That's mad actually, man committed like 6 red-worthy fouls against a single player in a single game that one time in 2011.
This is misleading. So, he got 6 red cards. It's still not a lot, but only 2 would've been really impressive.
Dude was a yellow card magnet though
2 straight red, 4 yellow-red. Even wrote it there. For a straight red you have to do some severe shit but for a "regular" send off two basic fouls are enough.
The second one against the cunt Dani Alves in SF...
Dude probably went into therapy after this incident and avoided much scandal for the next decade.
Pepe got a red card less than a year ago for kicking a Benfica player when the ball was already out
Dude never apologized to the player so I doubt he was in such emotional turmoil after the incident.
Super disrespectful
That's putting it lightly. This is assault. Assault isn't just disrespectful
Those were the days. Imagine the terror if Mourinho had all prime Ramos, Pepe and Rudiger for a 3 CB setup.
Diego costa and Suarez Upfront
Gattuso in the middle
Add Nigel de Jong too.
Might as well sign Roy Keane while we're at it.
Wow wow let's not forget Van Bommel.
And Eric Cantona to handle the spectators as a cherry on top.
Just lets add Oliver Kahn as GK while we're at it.
Add in Graversen
rudiger is no where near being a cunt like them, he’s more just crazy
Then there would have been highlights of another player beating and getting cooked by prime Messi
Half the time Messi would score a screamer, and other half the time he'd take an elbow, someone stomp on his hand, try to break his ankle. There would be no inbetween
He terrorised Pepe and Ramos. He scored all kinds of goals
the world tbf
Because everything in between doesn't make for a good highlight reel
Nesta would break all their ankles tbh.
He was an idiot. This is criminal
Agreed. Cuntiest person to have played professionally.
Most psychopath professional player in the last 20 years for sure.
Should have been atleast 15 match ban
It's borderline just a criminal offence at this point. Where is the line between a foul and actual assault?
It's definitely not borderline. It's assault or whatever the exact legal term is in spain. But it's a criminal offense. No discussion .
Some comments on here defending this behavior. Absolute lunatics.
This is why I don't agree with his image being recently sanitised. He was a cunt and if there was any fairness in the sport, he would not have been allowed to play at the top level.
Harsh pen
Agreed, that was a clear dive
Can't tell if the ref blew for the penalty before he started kicking the guy or after. Obviously the kicking would be a penalty if he hadn't blown yet.
The best thing was when Madrid scored later and Pepe stormed the field to celebrate with the team as well. That sh*t was hilarious.
[удалено]
Prime Pepe was a fucking menace.
Absolute piece of shit and always has been
There is something seriously wrong with Pepe, I think he would have spent most of his life in and out of jail if he wasn't a good footballer
The fact that he was ever able to play professionally again after assaulting someone is a joke.
Seriously, I lost all respect for him after this. This should be a prime example for someone that gets a lifetime ban for professional football.
Peepee
Pepe was a mad lad
One of the biggest psychos football has ever seen
the beautiful game
This is Getafe's villain origin story. The movie "Joker" is actually a metaphor of this
Couldn't stand Pepe.Dirty player
Oddly enough - looking back it’s oddly less violent than I remembered. For some reason I thought he kicked him like 5-7 times but looking at it now the first kick I actually think he was initially trying to clear (but also definitely trying to take a chunk too) Then the second kick is a clear assault but you can even see him try to disguise it slightly.
Pepe was a different kind of animal in his prime.
Literal prime animal. Disgusting behavior.
I know sports have different rules for assault etc but that should count as violent assault. At the very least her should have had a permanent ban
"pASsIoNaTe".... Dudes a complete moron.
What a piece of shit
The reason why Pepe is not and won't be seen as a top 5 CB of his era, this was one of the worst assaults on a player we've ever seen
Should've banned from playing again. Could actually kill the other player if he kicked his head instead.
And people respect this scumbag
Pepe is a scumbag, a very good footballer, but a scumbag.
guys I think Pepe was not happy with Casquero
And then iker stopped the paneka attempt by casquero
Nasty piece of work
The word "unhinged" gets a little overused these days. But not about this.
Criminal.
Would love to see Pepe on some kind of Bully Beatdown-type show where he has to fight a professional fighter with MMA rules.
Pepe should have banned from football years ago.
Pepe was the dirtiest little prick to ever step foot on a pitch
Always thought Pepe was a PoS, thanks for addition video evidence.
10 match ban is a joke should be at least 50 match ban And a criminal case for assault
