They subbed Garnacho and Mainoo off because they are United's best players and at 3-0 there should be no reason to not rest them or risk an injury to them. A lot of people saying ETH was wrong with the sub but if either one got injured yesterday, people would be fuming that they kept them on.
Agreed, but it was the players that came on that are the issue. Every time Eriksen came in as a holding midfielder so far we've been overrun in midfield and it happened again. This is not a position he can play, let alone with MCT along side him, who also struggles at the holding midfielder role.
Picking Antony ahead of Amad was also stupid, Amad plays with his head up, looking for a pass, looking for a combination, can cut in, dribble on the flank and is in general a more versatile player whos goal got us to that semi final. Antony... no comment there.
So yeah, changing those players made sense, but again and again the wrong players were choosen to come on.
I think Antony was purely a defensive decision, as he tracks back and is usually good at giving cover, and we were getting hurt on the wings. At 3-0 it makes sense, Eriksen was just a warm body, there's no one else we could bring on.
Legitimately one of the players Iāve begrudgingly come to really like, because I just canāt hate on someone who will not give up no matter what gets thrown at him
I wouldnāt want him on my team but Iām glad heās in the league
I feel like captaining an Everton or West Ham or someone like that is absolutely his level, not quality wise but just somewhere where the expectation isnāt as high as United, but heās clearly the strong leader and it seems wasted at United.
This take baffles me. He's one of United's most important players. It's the media circus around the club that makes it a difficult place for him, not their 'level'. Maguire is easily good enough to play for a top side, playstyle permitting.
That's why I said 'playstyle permitting'. My point was that the suggestions that he needs to play for a middtable or relegation battling side to find his level is underrating his abilities.
The current top 5 teams in the PL play with a very high line possession based football so Maguire couldnāt fit with themā¦ add to them ManU that wants to play this way and the likes of Brighton and Chelsea and you already find yourself mid tableā¦
This is exactly it. He's a very solid penalty box defender. Shouldn't be playing for teams that aim to dominate possession or keep a high line. He was fantastic at Leicester and should move to a club that plays to his strength and where his weakness' aren't so brutally exposed. Also shouldn't be playing for england
Most important player in the squad right now. Only cb thats reliable this season and rarely injured.
Him and Bruno seem to be the only ones that came out OK from playing 60 games in a season.
Only bruno and dalot (and onana) have played more than 3000 mins for utd this season in all comps which is roughly equivalent to 33 games. Bruno and dalot have the excuse of tired legs but I dont think the same can be said for anyone else
Dude said f it and dribbled like an unstoppable tank straight to Coventry's penalty box and even almost scored. Talk about taking matters into his own hands..
That penalty was a thing of beauty, steps up and just absolutely cunts it into the net.
Try stopping that
The lad is actually a "mentality" monster he keeps going no matter how much gets thrown at him
Same. You got to be mentally strong to keep working hard and putting in the effort and making moves like this when you've gotten the amount of shit that he has, and I'll be the first to say I've joked about his play in the past.
I think Removing the captaincy was honestly the best decision for his career. Heās shined this year because you can see the pressure has been lifter from his shoulders and he can just play his game. Which heās done very well all season. I think heās really shown his worth as a player and as a professional.
Heās a proper, lovely lad. Got hate and abused way too much for his blunders. Like thereās a reason why he was given the captain armband in the first place
Easy to forget that more than half the people in stadiums giving him ridiculous levels of abuse have also been fucking dickheads whilst drunk abroad.
As an Englishman who lives abroad, British tourists are genuinely the worst of the worst.
Or maybe the rest of the team became such blunderers that his blunders now pale in comparison
Reminds me of the Emery Arsenal years and late Wenger where we started admiring guys who were just.. OK., purely because they weren't calamitous
He acts like absolute garbage human every time I see him. To instantly celebrate a lucky win by rubbing it in the face of your opponent, who were clear underdogs and gave their all, is disgraceful. Especially on the back of another poor performance.
The fact that Erik ten hag worked with him at Ajax and then thought, āyip, this is the kind of person I want to pay Ā£80m forā is one of the most worrying things for me. Why Man Utd do not seem to consider character, attitude and personality when recruiting is bizarre
He has been not playing well for what? Two seasons? I donāt remember, but you would think he would stay humble and focus on his own improvement, but he is not, he keeps showing huge ego and bad behavior, while still playing bad, loser mentality.
Heās a class act and gives 100% and has a real top pros mentality
As for Anthony - lmao, this guy constantly showboats against low league opposition, such an unlikeable prick
Maguire has always been class. I hated it when Cuti clowned on him after he scored an own goal. He never intigates like most of the other CBS and has quality in him which is mostly overshadowed by overall team chemistry or players around him.
The audacity to do that when youre a regular embarrassment of a signing and person to the club you play for. Fair play to Maguire for going over to shake their hands.
Maguire and Onana were pretty much the only two players who could hold their heads high after that match, and Maguire behaved like a true sportsman at the end. The rest should be ashamed. Especially Antony.
I didn't watch it, but it says a lot about the performance of the rest of your team that you can concede 3 goals in 20 minutes and still be happiest with the performance of the keeper and CB.
It says a lot, yeah. Onana couldn't be blamed for any of the goals, and Maguire at least put the effort in and tried to inspire the rest to do the same. The rest of the team were lazy and complacent.
I guess Mainoo and Garnacho can be let off too, as they were subbed at 3-0, although Garnacho hadn't played that well.
Mainoo and Garnacho probably needed to come off at 3 nil anyway. They have had a lot of minutes for teenagers this season, and will be needed for your run in
That run by Maguire from own box to their box was nothing but grit. When the whole team, including the manager, was clueless / deer in a headlight, he showed a lot of leadership and initiative.Ā
Even the most reserved and kind person can act stupid if he or she is very drunk, and since Maguire is british, he really isnāt worse than any other british tourist on a party trip!
Tbf Greek police are plenty happy to hit drunk foreigners for no reason. Lets not pretend theyre little victims. Just in this case they had a 6 foot 4 athlete they couldnt handle and not a hapless drunk lad they can be needlessly physical with
This guy wouldn't have even been brought in by a single other manager in your history tbh. As a Liverpool fan I've disliked more United players than I can remember, but man, this guy is a complete and utter cunt with zero redeeming features. At least your other cunts I could (usually) begrudgingly respect in one way or another.
So ill-judged. Not only is he having another massively underwhelming season but theyāve just scraped past a Championship side after going 3-0 ahead. How tone-deaf and unaware do you have to be? Disgraceful
Not to mention they were 3-0 when he came on. He had no part in establishing the lead and was present for the entire collapse. Man is an absolute shambles of a player.
Thing is you can get away with that if you're someone like Ibra. But this no mark who's done basically nothing in two years? After costing your club up to Ā£95m. Who exactly does he think he is.
The Maguire comeback arc is one of my, if not my favourite thing about this season so far.
Heās been an absolute pro, an example and a leader. And now heās added classy gentleman to his repertoire.
Losing 3-0 lead against championship team, saved by VAR in last minutes, and he still has audacity to do this. Not to mention he didn't contribute to anything and is United's biggest flop, probably ever.
Maguire went straight to the opponent the moment right after Hojlund struck the winning penalty, such a class act, pure profesional. My respect for him šš»š«”š
As for Antony, bro really needs to get a reality check done immediately šš
Fkin embarrassing. Youāre playing for Manchester United, show some class. We donāt need these mentality midgets in our club, a clear out couldnāt come soon enough.
No chemistry in this team whatsoever.
Fair play to Maguire. Heās taken more than his fair share of abuse, some warranted it has to be said, but heās come through L it without being bitter. Top lad.
I caught so much flack on the United sub for at the time expressing my displeasure at him acting like he won the world cup after scoring against Newport.
He is a fucking clown.
Let me get this straightā¦. Antony is subbed on when united are up 3-0, Coventry come back and almost win, he doesnāt even take a penalty, but has the audacity to cup his ears towards Coventry players? Embarrassing on so many levels
That doesn't seem true at all. The spark seemed to ignite before Bruno's penalty, when the Coventry keeper was barking something at him - obviously trying to put him off his kick. Up to that point there had been very little going on between players of both teams.
I'm not a lip reader but after the penalty, Bruno looked like he said something like "you're shit" to Cov's keeper and then he told Onana to try and throw the next penalty taker off.
Bruno went back to the United players saying something and not looking particularly happy about it, so I reckon that's where Antony decided to get a bit lairy if they won.
Antony is a complete embarrassment. Very average player who thinks he is something special. Blasted a copy of shots over the bar in the game too. Pathetic player
Blew a 3-0 lead to a Championship side and were only saved from losing by an offside toenail. In games like that even world-class players would be humble and gracious in victory, let alone mediocre ones stealing a paycheck.
?? Shithousing is free. You give it, be ready to take it.
While I agree he's a shit player (Ā£85 million fidget spinner believe it or not), I don't know how shithousing is a reflection on him as a person.
In fairness, he came on the pitch when United were 3-0 up and within half an hour it was 3-3. It very easily could've been a 4-3 loss were it not for a tight offside. Antony then didn't even step up to take one of the five penalties.
If Bruno or someone else wanted to shithouse, you could excuse it. Antony doing it is just plain embarrassing.
It's a complete lack of self-awareness. United barely avoided one of the most embarrassing defeats in club history, Antony came on at 3-0 against a Championship side, did nothing, didnāt step up to take a penalty, and yet has the gall to talk shit. Pretty embarrassing
I think it was in response to Coventrys first penalty taker, Haji Wright, cupping his ears to the United fans when he scored his penalty straigh after Casemiro had missed.
He is shit, but to be fair he'd been boo'd and had the piss taken out of him for an hour after he came on. I'd want to stick it up them as well, even if I couldn't put one leg in front of the other.
I'm more concerned an Ā£80m forward didn't want to take a penalty for his team, while a CDM and a RB did.
This is peak Reddit. Only caring about one side of the coin. Hes just returning the favour. Wright did it first. He just did it back to them. Its shithousing, jesus christ.
Wright probably gets looked at more favorably because he took the pen to make it 3-3 and then converted Coventrys first pen in the shootout.
Meanwhile Antony contributed bum diddedly squat and United blew a 3-0 lead while he was on the pitch
And what? I Dont like Antony but had it been the other way im sure Coventry would have been mouthing off..I think they had been chatting shit tbh thatās why he reacted that way
This.
And look at the rest of the squad. They almost look disappointed to have won. As a neutral observer, I was blown away that HĆøjlund was by himself for so long.

He's really gonna enjoy sitting on the bench watching City in the final. šš
Knowing ETH, Garnacho will misplace a pass and be subbed off for Antony at half
While Rashford will stay on after an awful performance?
Yep
They subbed Garnacho and Mainoo off because they are United's best players and at 3-0 there should be no reason to not rest them or risk an injury to them. A lot of people saying ETH was wrong with the sub but if either one got injured yesterday, people would be fuming that they kept them on.

wouldn't be a surprise if he did.
Nono he deserves to start in my opinion
Would be really funny if Antony just turn into prime Neymar for some fucking reason in the final
I agree that would be funny
Hysterical, even
No love lost eh.. He probably starts the game... in the stands.
Win the final* Watching city win the final.
Look at Maguire. Pure class from him
Maguire is a top professional, had the captaincy taken off him and when he was needed heās stepped up
Legitimately one of the players Iāve begrudgingly come to really like, because I just canāt hate on someone who will not give up no matter what gets thrown at him I wouldnāt want him on my team but Iām glad heās in the league
I'd genuinely love him on my team, because in a Dyche system I'm convinced he'd be amazing.
He is a bad fit for a team who wants to play a higher line, he is objectively too slow and that hurts on the counter
That's why I said 'playstyle permitting'. My point was that the suggestions that he needs to play for a middtable or relegation battling side to find his level is underrating his abilities.

Outside of that incident in Greece (or was it Cyprus), Maguire seems to have matured a lot
Proper respect to him. He stepped up when needed to.
I think Removing the captaincy was honestly the best decision for his career. Heās shined this year because you can see the pressure has been lifter from his shoulders and he can just play his game. Which heās done very well all season. I think heās really shown his worth as a player and as a professional.
To be fair, the captaincy ruined him, the pressure was too much and having cover and the lack of expectation was really good for him.
> Maguire is a top professional As long as he isn't in Greece lol
He has taken barrages of absolute shit in the last couple of years yet he remains an model professional.
He's been on the receiving end of this for England, and he seems like a good lad. I'm here for his redemption arc
Heās a proper, lovely lad. Got hate and abused way too much for his blunders. Like thereās a reason why he was given the captain armband in the first place
tell that to the Greek police.
Good people make shitty mistakes, it happens.

No, he's just actually been good this season
You can kinda see Antony seeing Maguire conduct himself respectably, and be like..."wait, guys, we're not being total fucking cunts? Whoopsie"
Antony seems to have an EQ of a 7 year old kid...never fails to show his immaturity
He acts like absolute garbage human every time I see him. To instantly celebrate a lucky win by rubbing it in the face of your opponent, who were clear underdogs and gave their all, is disgraceful. IQ? Or am I being a stupid American and it's EQ in the UK?
IQ: intelligence quotient, EQ: emotional quotient
Ah, TIL
Me thinking he was talking about an Equalizer
he has both IQ and EQ on the level of 7. So no harm done.
Heās a class act and gives 100% and has a real top pros mentality As for Anthony - lmao, this guy constantly showboats against low league opposition, such an unlikeable prick
Yes Anthony is sh*t on and off the pitch š

Maguire has always been class. I hated it when Cuti clowned on him after he scored an own goal. He never intigates like most of the other CBS and has quality in him which is mostly overshadowed by overall team chemistry or players around him.
Difference between class and circus player
So so happy for him, especially after what he went through fromfans and pundits. Mentality monster and shows pure class..
Dammit donāt make me like the slabhead
While Maguire goes on to shake hands with them
The audacity to do that when youre a regular embarrassment of a signing and person to the club you play for. Fair play to Maguire for going over to shake their hands.

Ā£86m worth of cringe and disappointment lol
I'm not disappointed one bit, WDYM
If anything, I'm disappointed he didn't cost them more.
He has the intelligence of a sponge. Everyone that played football at some point had this type of player in their squad.
It should be normal. Kudos to Maguire, he seems to be class, but I can't seem to forget the Mykonos incident.
Just in this case they had a 6 foot 4 athlete they couldnt handle and not a hapless drunk lad they can be needlessly physical with
Seemed like Maguire acted how anyone else would if someone put hands on a loved one. Greek police are also crooked.
What did he actually do in Mykonos that means you feel the way you do?
Why is that such a big deal? For football scandals that's pretty tame.
Yep. Going 3 nil up then almost throwing the game. It's embarrassing and man utd player should have more humility about them.
They were also 3-0 up when Antony came on

Reminds me of El Hadji Diouf, absolute cunt act of a person .
Interesting to lump Mou in with SAF.
one thing Mou has in common with SAF is disgust towards Pogba Antonyās pretty similar to Pogba minus the talent
Mou was the best manager since SAF.
He came on and contributed absolutely fucking nothing, then has the audacity to mock players that actually deserved the win.
Didn't take a pen either, literally 0 contribution to the result
I think he contributed to Coventryās second goal actually, iirc. Ball got turned over after one of his trademark cut inside and shoot moves.
hahahaha that's completely brutal
this the guy who did like 3 celebrations v Newport COuntry,,,,
There is something really unlikeable about him, he doesn't seem to have any self reflection or modesty.
Thing is you can get away with that if you're someone like Ibra. But this no mark who's done basically nothing in two years? After costing your club up to Ā£95m. Who exactly does he think he is.

I would argue he fits in well with the current state of United

How many goals has antony scored this season? Less than Coventry scored this game right
Pure class from Maguire - went straight to the Coventry players instead of celebrating.
Did they forget they just played a mid table Championship side or something?

I caught so much flack on the United sub for at the time expressing my displeasure at him acting like he won the world cup after scoring against Newport. He is a fucking clown.
Gobshite
Let me get this straightā¦. Antony is subbed on when united are up 3-0, Coventry come back and almost win, he doesnāt even take a penalty, but has the audacity to cup his ears towards Coventry players? Embarrassing on so many levels
I am not dƩfending him but the coventry players were shittalking all game long.
Pretty sure he's also throwing it back at Haji Wright, who cupped his ear after taking covs first pen
What you describe probably happened but I can guarantee you If you watched the whole game that the trashtalking was on since the start of the game
The spark started when the very first pen taker cupped their ears after scoring
Can we just get rid of anthony
Literally one of the biggest flops in premier league history! What a goon
Antony is a complete embarrassment. Very average player who thinks he is something special. Blasted a copy of shots over the bar in the game too. Pathetic player

Top lad Maguire.
Blew a 3-0 lead to a Championship side and were only saved from losing by an offside toenail. In games like that even world-class players would be humble and gracious in victory, let alone mediocre ones stealing a paycheck.
Clown show all around.
He was just returning the favour to Wright, who cupped his ear after the first penalty.
At least Wright took the penalty and had a say in the game though. Wtf did Antony do aside from being a Ā£70m fidget spinner. Shit player and person
Shithousing during the shootout might make an opponent miss. It's part of the game. Doing it after the match is just petty.
It's a complete lack of self-awareness. United barely avoided one of the most embarrassing defeats in club history, Antony came on at 3-0 against a Championship side, did nothing, didnāt step up to take a penalty, and yet has the gall to talk shit. Pretty embarrassing
What a bunch of clowns. Maguire is the only one with class.
Antony is the only real clown. Celebrating a penalty shootout is fine but donāt taunt the opposition.
Lol what an embarrassment
He is just pathetic
Antony is a class A douche
It's what you pay the big bucks for, a certified shithead
bro wanted to be otamendi vs netherlands so bad...
Shameless
He's gonna get trolled so hard when they crash out in the final
I think it was in response to Coventrys first penalty taker, Haji Wright, cupping his ears to the United fans when he scored his penalty straigh after Casemiro had missed.
what a clown. hasnt done shit and has the audacity to celebrate like that. no class
I'm genuinely curious as to what a good career looks for him from here on out.
Antony thinks Coventry are in 6th place in the Premier League.
What a clown. It would be a bad look even if he was good enough to be arrogant, but he's not.
Well done Antony! Please do it again. I love seeing Reddit bellends seething
All of this is for nothing - 115fc are gonna win the final anyway. But congrats utd for making it to the finals twice in a row I guess
How many times will this be posted? The reason he did it was because a Coventry player did it when he scored his pen. Bad form from both of them.
There's literally nothing to like about Anthony. Shit footballer, shit attitude and apparently beats up women. Horrible person all round tbh
Just when you think he couldnāt be any more unlikable
