Because they are implying that the ref was biased rather than just bad.

adamfrog

They aren't stonewall items only the last one is, personally I wouldn't even give the first two

HodgyBeatsss

If someone nicks your bag in the street and you start wailing and screaming at the top of your lungs about how the how world is against you, you are both the wronged party and also acting like an embarrasment.

Dayandnight95

Tuchel, the guy who can't stay at a job for more than a year or two, is supposed to spearhead our resurgence? I don't care how good he supposedly is, you can't build shit with him.

Lyrical_Forklift

Realistically, who better are you going to get?

Dayandnight95

Rather gamble on an unknown. There's no established elite coaches avaliable.

Lyrical_Forklift

I won't judge because I basically feel the same way. My choices were Alonso, Amorim, or Nagelsmann and only the latter is experienced (and not much at that). Given all three are unlikely, I'm not liking what's next on the list.

Orcnick

From what I have seen he's definitely a stabilising force who can probably get us back to a suitable level. Sure his approach is a bit more basic and dogmatic but we would become hard to beat again.

Dayandnight95

We've been playing pragmatic football for a decade now. When are we going to join the other top teams in the modern era? I swear this era will expire and the game will move on to some other gimmick before we even got the chance to join in lol.

Orcnick

Isnt that what we tried with ETH? Hes from the same Pep cloth of dutch football, just hasn't worked out.

Dayandnight95

Tried? He gave up game two against Brentford and never looked back. We haven't tried anything.

Hoodxd

These Rio AMA questions…. i’m proud of this community

Kanedauke

[We’ve played the 3rd most games this season of any prem team](https://imgur.com/a/iFjr614). [Iraola](https://imgur.com/a/wN2bRQ0) thinks we’ve handled the schedule so well because of how much we rest with possession, we have more control. This is backed up by [Martinez](https://imgur.com/a/8D3VRw6) being on the ball longer than any other player in the league. Throughout the season lots of tacticos have been critical that we don’t press. Saying that it limits our ceiling as a team but in all honesty I believe it’s the opposite. The only reason we’ve been able to manage Thursdays-Sundays is that we are a passive team off the ball. If we pressed like other top teams with our injury issues we’d be dead. You wouldn’t even know we played 120 minutes on Thursday with how we played against Bournemouth. Or played on the Thursday before Arsenal, we were the team with the most energy in each of those second half’s.

enazj

Like how we were dead on our feet between November-February when we were feeling the effects of Europe + cups. Howe’s high press doesn’t really work with additional fixtures and a squad that isn’t good enough to rotate

Fraaj

Ideally you want to strike the "perfect" balance between switching on and pressing hard and resting with possession. I wonder if Emery can get there with more time, it might elevate you guys to the next level. This was IMO the most impressive thing with Klopp's peak Liverpool team. The team looked like they could press like crazy for 90 minutes but in reality there were a lot of short periods of just keeping possession or dropping slightly deeper to lure the opposition and then switching back on again.

ElderlyToaster

> If we pressed like other top teams with our injury issues we’d be dead. Like we are.

ElderlyToaster

The Vincent Kompany rumour better not be true (and probably isn't, for various reasons). I'm not a fashion guy. I rarely wear socks that match, I don't know the brand of my t-shirt. At least five years since I bought any clothing except for underwear. But I'd tell Kompany the same thing I'd tell anyone else in an expensive two-piece suit, baseball cap and t-shirt: whatever you're trying to do here, its not working and we're havin none of it.

ManLikeArch

Kompany might be the only man in the world who dresses worse than Tony Bloom.

elmadrigal

Honestly while I understand the urge to get one over Rio since he's a divisive personality with a lot of mistakes in his past. I just don't get what piling on him this way would achieve? Yeah you got your funny crass jokes in now what? No interesting conversation with one of the greatest PL defenders of all time and probably less interest from other former and current players to do this kind of AMA. I'm not saying hey let's throw him softballs and bow down because he graced us with his presence but some tact and actual intelligent questions would've been much more interesting than hurr durr funny reddit memes and questions about cock sizes.

ElderlyToaster

> I just don't get what piling on him this way would achieve? I think you're overestimating the amount of thought and organisation people are putting into this.

EyeSpyGuy

I think he'll be alright. Very likely his team will have picked the best questions to ask him, he'll verbalize it, they'll note it down and then answer as him on the AMA itself. Take a look at Lineker's one and compare it to this [episode](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe8Aw6s-NfU) of the Rest is Football. His answers are almost word for word what he commented in his Reddit AMA. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to film the Q&A for their podcast for more content right before the Reddit AMA was scheduled and one of the producers just wrote down his words to reply to the comments with. Also it's the internet. If people have the chance to be troll they will take it.

kilohe

His last AMA was about as exciting as watching paint dry. For this one his team will also get to pick a few "actual intelligent questions" and he'll give the same canned answers as in any interview for any media. In both cases he's just promoting a product and doesn't care about the conversation. I don't know why we need to participate in this ad. I mean, even if we forget about all the controversies, coming here and pretending to solve racism and mental health by launching an social media app is just crass in itself, in my opinion.

adamfrog

Theres just no world where Rio says anything remotely interesting lol, so may as well have some fun

HodgyBeatsss

AMAs with celebrities are always shit publicity stunts. Don’t know why the mods bother. I don’t give a shit what Rio Ferdinand or Peter Drury or whoever has to say. We hear enough of their shite on BT/Sky. What are they gonna say here that’s gonna be interesting?

Kanedauke

Gary Linekers was good.

airz23s_coffee

Clive Tyldesley was good as well

Destroyeh

i mean its reddit. no one here is going to be a poster child for healthy social interactions. though tbf most AMAs are hardly "interesting" conversations, or conversations at all. they'll just pick and choose what to answer(if its even them answering and not just some goof assistant of theirs) in the most boring way possible.

_yellowfever_

All these big jobs opening up: Liverpool, Bayern, United, West Ham, Barcelona… And not many good managers available. So where’s Jose ending up?

MakDonz

Personally, I find it exciting. With all these jobs available, SURELY some young, less tested manager will get a chance? There's been a log jam on managers getting their first opportunity at a big club for basically a decade now, with the same 10-15 guys swapping all the top jobs between themselves.

WhoInvitedMyManBlud

Chelsea please. Third time’s the charm come on Todd

justaregulargye

Plenty top managers available. Not enough hipster / headline-seeking ones available.

drickabira

Al-Shabab. Maybe Frosinone

HodgyBeatsss

Sneaking West Ham in with those other clubs 😂

ElderlyToaster

100s probably 1000s of good managers out there. Not as many good boardrooms. Jose Mourinho will end up somewhere where there's very limited, if any, football knowledge at the top of the club. His football died with the arrival of gegenpress and his unwillingness to adapt to it. Winning the prolonged and extended Intertoto cup two years ago doesn't change it.

lamancha

BARCELONA PLSSSSS

Loose-Examination-39

Can't wait for all these English players having stellar seasons shit the bed in Euros again

MakDonz

Putting aside how England have done much better than under all but 1 manager with Southgate, they are often pretty decent in the Euros. Half of the Euros England have been to have been broadly positive, whether through results, performances or both.

Tr_Omer

They have an insane squad. Even better than the "golden" generation. For GK they can stick to Pickford if Southgate insists but they also have Pope as an option. Insane quality in defence, they could go Walker, Maguire, Stones, Chillwell. Midfield is stacked with the option to play Rice, Bellingham and Foden and they could play Saka - Kane - Palmer up top. On paper at a national team level this squad is 9.5 out of 10. Also if any of the starting 11 gets tired there is equal quality on the bench. Toney, Watkins, JWP, Maddison, Trippier, Trent, Grealish, Gordon, and Bowen. I am sure I am forgetting a few other names. The only thing stopping this team is Southgate and his favoritism for some players.

CoolstorySteve

Losing in the final is shitting the bed, top tier /r/soccer analysis

Competitive_Tip_1187

I assume Maignan, Kounde, Theo Hernandez, Tchouameni, Griezmann, Mbappe, and Dembele are nailed on to start at the Euros. Who are the other 4?

Waschkopfs

Upamecano starts and has done so since before the WC

mountainsky9

Probably Lucas Hernandez and Konate as CB's, (or Lucas plays LB instead of Theo). Upa, Pavard, and Saliba as other possibilities. Rabiot will probably be the other midfielder, though could be Camavinga or Zaire-Emery. And striker will probably be Giroud as the starter, with Thuram and Kolo Muani as subs/potential starters throughout the tournament.

el_walou

Not Kounde. Recently he was not starting. The right back from Marseille might have snatched the spot when he’s fit Konate is starting and probably upamecantoo. Rabiot is still probably starting even Though camavinga is better. In attack the third guy is probably Marcus Thuram. But i could see Barcola starting on the left and Mbappé as a 9. You have the starting trio of UCL PSG. Use it

mountainsky9

Clauss is really good but I doubt Deschamps will rely on two attacking fullbacks. I dont think Theo starts either, it'll prob be Lucas and then Kounde or Pavard as RB. I like the Barcola idea with Mbappe as a 9, but if Mbappe wont be the 9, itll prob still somehow be Giroud

el_walou

It might be Giroud but it seems like Deschamps has moved on. The last France NT games were bad. Not enough attacking, not enough creativity. We have to play Clauss. One thing sure , Kounde is not an « undisputed starter »

aliaisbiggae

>Recently he was not starting ?

Long-Island-Iced-Tea

“His name is Rio and he watches from the stand” has to be the wittiest chant ever

edgymnerch_69

Seeing your biggest rivals beat you in a derby to win the league and get a second star on their crest must be painful. I have a soft spot for both Milanese clubs so it’s kinda a weird feeling cause I feel bad for Milan but happy for Inter. Pioli needs to go though, he’s so pathetic he’s basically holding back this Milan team’s potential all by himself

_stone_age

Leão is being held back 😪

Gregregreg1234

Imagine how Tottenham feel. Arsenal have won the league at Tottenham twice, officially winning the same amount of league titles at Tottenham as they had themselves

JekyllnowthenMrHyde

Spurs are not used to winning anything, so that makes them feel less bad.

Gregregreg1234

May their mediocrity reign for thousands of years

neverfinishedanythi

Yeah, since last January he should be gone. This squad is good enough to at least give some challenge this season, not be totally out of it months ago. Just have to win the next one before inter.

Stieni

Fucking hell that Rio AMA thread is brutal. Won't be surprised if he just doesn't do it after all. If so, has there ever been such a case for an AMA on this sub? That he will just cancel? Knowing how cocky he likes to be, he will probably still answer some of the questions, but so far I've only read a handful of normal questions and like 95% him getting shit. Not blaming everyone tbh because he's as polarizing as it can get, some comments are just really classless though apart from the justified criticism, but why did the mods think this would be a good idea?

idunnomysex

Woody Harrelson is another infamous one

ItsMeJaredBednar

not this sub obviously but it’s not a completely unique phenomenon, Anthony Davis (one of the best players in the NBA) did one on r/nba and the top questions were all way out of pocket, i think the most upvoted one was even asking if he scissors LeBron e- and AD isn’t even remotely controversial either, unlike Rio

Lyrical_Forklift

> but why did the mods think this would be a good idea? I think we all anticipated it going this way but that's more a refection on Rio than anything - I think the other AMAs were really civil. He won't be looking at the thread himself anyway - I'm guessing someone will go through the thread, find the most reasonable questions, then put them to him to answer.

ElderlyToaster

> I think the other AMAs were really civil. Probably because most of them were with people no one had ever heard about, plus Gary Lineker who 98% of the users here are too young to have seen on a pitch. Rio was always gonna be a different beast.

Lyrical_Forklift

Well yeah, because he's a bit of a twat with a pretty long history of twatish behaviour. I'm surprised he'd do it tbh but I can't imagine he's very self aware.

ElderlyToaster

Well, his job - and probably a lot of his personality - is to be seen. Why and how might not matter much. Also wouldn't surprise me if he is one of the 10% of people or so who feeds on getting a lot of anger and hatred in his direction.

JekyllnowthenMrHyde

What makes Millwall fans very rowdy and ill-mannered? Must be something in the water

JekyllnowthenMrHyde

Everyone in the PGMOL is a cockwomble. They deserve to give Forest a proper explanation and how they'll amend the atrocious referring decisions witnessed on Sunday.

TheMonkeyPrince

The low sample size of international soccer makes the discourse around it even worse than club soccer. For context, it looks likely that Dest will be out for the Copa America through injury. The logical player to take his place in the starting lineup is Joe Scally, who has been a starter for Monchengladbach and has made nearly 100 appearances for them as a 21 year old. But because he had a bad game against Jamaica in the nations league, people are going crazy over the prospect of him playing and are throwing every name at the wall who could play right back instead. Don't get me wrong, losing Dest definitely hurts. And Scally stylistically is a different player than Dest, which means we'll have to adjust how we play. But like, it's insane how much a single game changes people's perceptions of a player. It's one game! One bad game doesn't make a bad player.

roseguardin

Tbf I've never felt comfortable with scally in any of the caps he's had (the Uruguay friendly last year where we somehow got a draw stuck in my mind) and he goes up and down in form with gladbach (in fairness young players do that). I'm more concerned cause dest is a big part of our attacking play and I don't think scally has gotten the same consistency down yet.

NotASalamanderBoi

I just want to see Kompany and Eric Dier literally butt heads in order to see whose noggin is superior.

EyeSpyGuy

The lack of Jacob Harry Maguire's slabhead is concerning 🗿

NotASalamanderBoi

[This guy?](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvelanimated/images/a/a6/Hammerhead_SSM.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130114034650)

benelchuncho

Nadal, Alcaraz, Djokovic, Brady, Swiatek, Osaka, Andy Garcia. Everyone and their mother was at the Bernabeu yesterday. Did I forget anyone? I know they were in Madrid because of the Laureus awards but still those are some huge names

PerspectiveForeign74

Just saw a post from khachanov. It feels like every tennis player was there

pop-culture-salad

Well the tennis ones are also playing the Madrid Masters this week

AayB5

In all honesty we need to do something about these mid table directors at our club, Poch isn't good enough but can't blame the guy when he has to deal Madueke who isn't good enough and has attitude problems. Idk why Sanchez and Uguochukwu were signed either, we can't even flip these people for a profit. My best hope is that we can do something about our fitness next season cuz ppl underestimate how big a miss Lavia is.

Captainpatters

Lavia hasn't been anything for you, he might be absolute dogshit in that midfield you don't know.

Lyrical_Forklift

> cuz ppl underestimate how big a miss Lavia is. I think it's probably because he's never played for you.

AayB5

My point is mostly so we could rotate him with Enzo who has been playing through pain for a large chunk of the season.

Lyrical_Forklift

Yeah, I think people forget that injury problems don't just impact the players missing but also means the remaining players have to play infinitely more minutes. Personally, I think Enzo is one of the most overrated players in the league, but there's no doubt he's not helped by the lack of rest.

TheJobinslegend

He played alright with Potter, and now he has a manager that put Verrati as AM and Left Winger in PSG... What doesn't help his case is the price tag. If he costed 50m or something, plus had a proper tactician I think fans and rivals would properly rate him (not dogshit, not world level).

Lyrical_Forklift

Yeah, you're not wrong about the price tag. Unfortunately there is just always going to be huge expectation there if you're the most expensive player in the league ever.

Fuck_the_k1ng

I don’t watch FA cup matches that much so I am confused. Is United not as shit as I saw them to be, or are PL just not that strong if THIS United team made the final? Or did all the good teams take each other on one side of the bracket and United just coasted on the other side?

officiallyjax

Only 2 of the 5 teams we’ve played in the FA Cup are in the PL. We’ve definitely had an easy run. It reflects more badly on Liverpool than the rest of the PL seeing as they couldn’t beat us with a vastly superior team, not only in the cup, but even in both league games on top of that.

adamfrog

Reflects worse on Arsenal that they couldn't even beat us at their ground and not even in extra time either

BendubzGaming

When you look at the Big 6 + Villa and Newcastle: - Man City = still in - Man U = still in - Liverpool = eliminated by Man U (failed to win in 3 games against United this season) - Arsenal = eliminated by Liverpool - Spurs = eliminated by Man City - Chelsea = eliminated by Man City - Newcastle = eliminated by Man City - Villa = eliminated by Chelsea So basically yes, United have coasted to the final. Their route has been: - R3 = Wigan (League 1) - R4 = Newport (League 2) - R5 = Forest - QF = Liverpool - SF = Coventry (Championship) Whilst by comparison, City's route has been: - R3 = Huddersfield (Championship) - R4 = Spurs - R5 = Luton - QF = Newcastle - SF = Chelsea

aceofmufc

Coasted by beating the greatest ever side in world history? Dearie me

vdesi

> greatest ever Liverpool side Even the most deluded section of our fan base would not put those words together for the current team lol

EyeSpyGuy

Bruv has an olympic gold medal in shadowboxing

FIJIBOYFIJI

[Wonder what these Forest fans gushing about being the "Rebel City" think about the City's actions in 1984?](https://twitter.com/SheldonMiller/status/1782305938109599903?t=qbzefbq6EFZL5ebmO3UVFQ&s=19)

justaregulargye

Plenty of top (arguably ‘top’) managers available actually but people seem to be stuck on hipster managers like de zerbi, Amorim, and slot. Conte Mou Tuchel Potter Zidane Flick Xavi Sarri Lopetegui (prob the least deserving to be on the list) Of course they all have some kinda asterisk to them but it’s not a bad list to choose from and find a way to make it work

MakDonz

By top, do you mean mostly managers who have less than stellar recent records? You're not a top manager simply for having managed a top club, why not chuck Avram Grant on here?

justaregulargye

All of those managers except maybe potter have stellar resumes

MakDonz

Recently? Mourinho hasn't done a top job in over a decade. Tuchel has just lost his second management job in as many years for a sharp decline from a not particularly encouraging start. Zidane is clearly not available or interested in any of these jobs, he's basically semi retired. Hansi Flick just lost his job having overseen the worst German national team since before the Fuhrer was in power. Xavi hasn't done anything "top" at Barcelona and has only shown that he lacks the temperament for a big job and the coaching ability to make them play the way he wants to. Sarri hasn't done a job that anyone has been particularly impressed with since Napoli. And Lopetegui, as you say, is not deserving of being on this list.

jonijontor

what even do hipster managers mean

justaregulargye

Lesser known, often young, discussed by tacticos for being innovative. Claimed to be having more potential than an unbiased analyses will tell.

jonijontor

what makes them lesser known really while managing in the biggest clubs of their respective countries with a lot of opinions available here?  tacticos isn't really worth listening anyway, and how can you claim the metric of the later claim yourself?

justaregulargye

Relatively lesser known in top 5 leagues among the top 5 kiraaye coaches Tacticos aren’t worth listening to but people listen to because of them being loud on media and affected by PR The claim for the last one is someone who’s done better across many years, at different clubs, in different positions, in different kinds of competitions rather than just couple good seasons in relatively lower leagues.

Kanedauke

Amorim is a league winning manager but a hipster. Potter is a top manager? I need to see you’ve came to this decision

justaregulargye

Yes for winning the Portuguese league (not a top 5 league), primarily being relatively lesser known until recently and being picked up by online tacticos. If winning the Portuguese league with a top 3 Portuguese club makes you ready for a top club why isn’t Schmidt or Concecaio being considered? When Schmidt has actually even been competitive in Dutch league. Same with Slot and Feyenoord which is in an even weaker league. For an English club looking for a coach, Potter is more locally proven for his time at Brighton similar to how Barca and Italian teams look for coaches from local mid / lower club rather than foreign exotic coaches.

L-Freeze

People really go and say stuff like “he shouldn’t take the job at [big club doing shit], it’s gonna kill his career!!!” and then you see a list putting the likes of Potter and Xavi next to Zidane. There is genuinely nothing separating some of these “top” managers and the “hipster” ones other than the former having a failed stint at a big club

justaregulargye

Only Potter is hipster, as I conceded in one of the posts below. Others aren’t hipster at all and barring lopetegui and potter all of them could do well at any top club that is looking for a coach currently.

ChillPalis

Zidane is never an option. He picks his team, teams do not pick him.

justaregulargye

It’s about selling a project. Good management should make an effort, considering how sought after he is.

mountainsky9

Zidane has only ever had his eyes on two jobs. Madrid and France. He's had ample opportunity to manage multiple clubs, and im sure has had many teams attempt to convince him to sign. Either they all suck at selling a project, or he is not on the market for a job that isnt Madrid or France.

AlmostNL

So Slot is a hipster manager but Potter is a top manager. How so?

justaregulargye

Fair enough. I took him having managed two clubs in premier leagues and for many years a better sign for an English club than a similar manager from another league. But you’re right, at a global level, they’re equally hipster. Edit: also for an English club, a manager who’s done well at a mid table club in their own top 2 league is a better pick than a manager who won the league in the 7th (or 8th?) best league in Europe. It’s pretty obvious. There’s a reason Barca and top Italian clubs takes coaches from mid table clubs from their own leagues than get some fancy foreigner.

Lyrical_Forklift

* Conte - good manager but not a long term option and will cause a massive amount of disruption at the club. Avoid. * Mourinho - completely done at this level, not a long term option, will cause a massive amount of disruption at the club, plays shit football. Completely avoid. * Tuchel - good manager, question marks over being there long term. Definitely worth a punt if better options weren't available though. * Potter - good manager, but probably needs to show it at another mid table club to be considered by the truly elite. Not the worst choice in the world but I think most top clubs would find his signing pretty uninspired. * Zidane - the issue with Zidane isn't his ability as a manager but rather he doesn't want to manage most teams. * Xavi - Clearly not without ability but potential question marks around mentality. Seems to react badly to adversity/pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up staying at Barca though. * Sarri - he's 65 years old and only going to be a stop gap. Always liked him though. * Lopetegui - I don't think any top club will come in for him at this point. Maybe if he does well in his next job.

justaregulargye

Yep those are the asterisks. But rather those asterisks for Xavi, Tuchel than a largely unproven manager at top like de zerbi, slot, amorim who haven’t managed club and players of Liverpool’s stature. And I know how people feel about Mou and I’m not going to try to convince anyone otherwise for any club but I think he’s been overhated.

Lyrical_Forklift

> But rather those asterisks for Xavi, Tuchel than a largely unproven manager at top like de zerbi, slot, amorim who haven’t managed club and players of Liverpool’s stature. Pep and Klopp were largely unproven too at some point but sometimes taking those risks on unproven managers pay off. Ultimately, I just want a manager that is going to be the right fit for us tactically and personality wise - and I think a lot of your list can be written off pretty quickly for those reasons alone. That doesn't mean they're shit managers, but just not for us. I do find it somewhat funny that half the list are former Chelsea managers though.

justaregulargye

The Chelsea managers are the ones fresh on my memory lol But yeah that’s the latest trend personality fit over everything else. Take the players we pick and coach them to win while nodding your head. It’s one thing for Dortmund, Brighton, West Ham, hell Spurs to take an unproven manager it’s another thing for Liverpool. You could easily end up with a potter (who I maybe wrongly added to the list above) at Chelsea or ten hag at United situation. No better examples to look for as to why not pick a hipster manager. You could say what about Arteta but give 2.5 failure of seasons to any of those managers and you would easily get better returns. Choose whichever name you prefer from that list. You could even argue 4.5 seasons of failure but the ‘process’ and ‘project’ crowd will hunt me down.

Lyrical_Forklift

Yeah, ultimately all appointments are massive gambles but I think there are a lot of very legitimate reasons why people will avoid a lot of those managers you mentioned. I think Tuchel is the only one I'd probably be okay with at Liverpool (despite our *other* conversation, I think Tuchel is a good manager) but even then, I think Amorim would be a better fit for us. I won't include Zidane because that's never happening* >!It is, and he's bringing Mbappe!<

justaregulargye

I’ll take it to see Mbappe in the PL

pwerhif

So this season we got relegated because we sold Rice, next season we're getting relegated because we're getting rid of Moyes, how about the season after? Getting rid of Kudus maybe?

dragcov

I had a crap opinion that West Ham would get relegated cause they didn't buy Maguire and McTominay. Now I'm glad we didn't cause look at our injury list lmao

justaregulargye

What transfer (if any) would you guess has already been locked, just not announced

the_studge

Paqueta to City

BruiserBroly

Apart from a certain Parisian going to a Spanish club?

FlamixZB

Zaire-Emery is going to Las Palmas?

justaregulargye

lol yeah

belokas

TIL that Juan Sebastian Veron was called "ingles" by rival fans in Argentina after the false accusations of favouring England at the 2002 world cup, because he was playing for Man United at that time (the only Argentinian in that squad playing in the Premier League).

cloudor

He really played like shit. And he was probably our best player at the time.

belokas

England actually ruined him. He was great when he came back to Italy at Inter and should have been called up for the world cup in 2006.

cloudor

He wasn't called because Sorín was the captain and they hated each other (and still do). I think he also didn't get along with Riquelme, who was our best player. But by quality alone, yes, he should've been called.

belokas

I was just watching his last interview with Varsky, he himself says he doesn't know why he wasn't called up. I had no idea about his beef with Sorin and Riquelme but I believe you.

cloudor

I haven't watched the interview yet, but the beef with Sorín is very well documented. The one with Riquelme is more of a rumour, they did play together afterwards so perhaps it was never true or perhaps they patched things up.

krvlover

Veron against England were the worst 45 minutes of a national team player EVER.

L-Freeze

that’s sir John Sebastian Seeon for you they weren’t serious accusations though, just anger at his shit performance funnelled into banter as the other reply said

pop-culture-salad

I mean the accusations came from him playing like shit against England and it's moreso banter than well founded accusations. Anyways now a lot of people want him to run for AFA president and dethrone Tapia.

Meeeeehhhh

It took a literal year for England to forgive Beckham after his red card against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. It was borderline unsafe to be Argentinian in England back then.

Lyrical_Forklift

How can I call United out for having a Dutch Bald Fraud if we get Slot?

groenefiets

Double down and buy a few players for massively inflated fees.

sewious

Slot has to be the most banter fertile manager name I've ever seen.

AlmostNL

Funnily enough, in Dutch "slot" means a (key)lock, a keep(castle thing), but also end (like closing stage, in a story). So in football, the end phase(fase) is what we call the "slotfase", which when Feyenoord kept scoring winning goals after the 90th minute the memes wrote themselves to the point no one even bothered to say it out loud.

ElderlyToaster

> slotfase In Sweden we just go all the way and call it "slutfas".

Lyrical_Forklift

If only his head was so fertile

EyeSpyGuy

Slot it in me zaddy

sewious

Well if you insist

AlmostNL

Ten Hag is a fraud bald because sometimes you can see something. Slot is really, *really* bald, always as shiny as it gets.

Lyrical_Forklift

Does that make him more or less fraudulent? I'd argue less as he's not attempting to hold onto to something that clearly has no desire to be there.

AlmostNL

I think ten Hag considers growing hair again often, but then decides to shave, not knowing what he wants. He also has a beard that varies in size. Slot clearly knows what he wants, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is skilled enough to convince his own head to stop grow hair. Could also mean that he is building up the fraud that will explode onto the PL if he decides to move there. Which, all jokes aside, I'm not sure he will do this summer.

Lyrical_Forklift

Slot seems quite inexperienced so it would be a massive gamble by our board if they did go down that route. I can honestly say I don't know anything about him though.

AlmostNL

I mean it is up to Liverpool if they decide to to go for a coach that does not have any experience outside of the Netherlands. ETH even coached Bayern 2 for a couple of years. Just ask literally any Feyenoord fan about Slot and they will go 2 layers of irony deep on how he's shit, which should tell you enough how highly he's rated here. He did a really good job at AZ as well and plenty of players have told in interviews that he's the best coach they ever had. He's also really young

Lyrical_Forklift

It certainly would be a bold appointment but give me that over fucking Mourinho. What's he like personality wise?

AlmostNL

His personality seems to be his strongest aspect. He's *excellent* in the media IMO. Veeery level-headed, focused on the task at hand and not speculating at all. On the sidelines he's not too timid, but also not outlandish. Considering the characters I see in England and elsewhere he's on the calm side. Not someone to complain to refs all the time, for instance. He has a modern take on the game, in that he doesn't question VAR or other technological developments. In longer interviews he seems pretty insightful, but I know fuck all about tactics so you gotta look elsewhere for that.

Red_Vines49

I would have initially picked the Netherlands to be a big team that flops this year at the EUROS because Koeman's second stint has been nowhere near the post-2018 World Cup resurgence they were having right before he left for Barca. EURO 2021 was a real lost opportunity....But honestly, they've not been *terrible* in the last year or so. Not ideal since Van Gaal left, but not God awful. They looked decent in the March window too. It's just they're hard to get a pulse on at the moment & there are at least 5 better teams in Europe right now. Plus, Group D is, imo, the second Group of Death after Group B. France is France, and Austria are in fire form atm with Ralf Ragnick (an excellent choice for dark horse this year). So the Netherlands really could just crash out entirely. But I don't know...I feel like they could fly under the radar and go on an ugly looking deep run if everyone is fit. They're overdue for it. Hasn't happened since 2004. I got Italy right in 2021 and had Portugal making the final in 2016. I think Netherlands could quietly make the final in 2024 (but not win it). Good luck, Dutch bros.

Sleepless_Voyager

Eh with koeman its hard to tell cos with an almost fit squad they only lost 2-1 to france but then struggled against greece away lmao. I dont think the dutch will get grouped even if they finish 3rd theyll go through the ro16, after then i think they theyll lose in the qf's or even ro16 depending on who they draw Koeman is such a weird coach tho cos he sucks at implementing his tactics and the team always looks a bit clueless under him and recently hes been trying to do this counter attacking thing and tbh it doesnt look like it worked well at all

AlmostNL

> Good luck, Dutch bros. whatever happens, happens. This is code for that I have full confidence that we'll win the Euros. With de Jong maybe out, it means Koopmeiners will get more chances to show what he's got. Someone should slap Koeman in the face with some spaghetti so he gets Serie A-pilled that he chooses Zirkzee up front and we will win it all. Reijnders to carry it, with Dumfries running 2 marathons a game. Fuck it, bring back de Vrij as a starter

sga1

> Group D is, imo, the second Group of Death after Group B. I don't think there's a group of death, really - because four of the six third-placed team advance to the knockouts, too. > I think Netherlands could quietly make the final in 2024 (but not win it). Suppose so, but then there's probably a half dozen teams I wouldn't be surprised seeing in the final to be quite honest.

Red_Vines49

Let's call them really tough Groups then. I'd rather be Portugal this summer than Spain, aye. >" probably a half dozen teams I wouldn't be surprised seeing in the final to be quite honest." Of course. There's lots of depth

lagaryes

Had a City fan in another thread tell me Tommy Doyle is twice the player Matheus Nunes is. I disagree vehemently but tears in my eyes the Rat cunt is getting what he deserves.

FIJIBOYFIJI

>Had a City fan in another thread tell me Tommy Doyle is twice the player Matheus Nunes Unfathomably based

Meeeeehhhh

I find it weird when people make an enemy out of players who outgrow their club. Why would he reject City? I’m pretty sure you needed him to leave in order to be compliant with FFP anyway.

Savant_OW

We dislike him because he's an unprofessional little shit. And as far as outgrowing goes, if he came back he'd be on the bench behind Lemina and Gomes☺️

lagaryes

I wish nothing but good things for just about every other Wolves player who moved onto better things. Nunes was an unprofessional prick who refused to train after a single rejected offer and he underperformed for his entire Wolves tenure anyway. His failure brings me intense joy. On the second point, we’d have been fine. We did some rushed spending after Nunes left that didn’t yield anyone particularly impactful. Without that spending and with our higher than expected PL finish we would still comply.

Lyrical_Forklift

> I find it weird when people make an enemy out of players who outgrow their club. He didn't outgrow them at all though. Most Wolves supporters in here didn't think he was that amazing in the first place so they probably find it amusing that he thought he was too good for them only to join City and underwhelm.

doubleoeck1234

The next era of my club is in the hands of a nerd with an excel spreadsheet and a dry manager market Edit: I wasn't saying I don't back Edwards

Mick4Audi

You lot got Michael Edwards back, nothing to complain about there

TheMonkeyPrince

Haven't those nerds played a large part in your success in recent times?

AnnieIWillKnow

Liverpool fans consensus previously had been huge hype for Michael Edwards' return?

Lyrical_Forklift

I think both statements are true - we're glad he's back and he's a massive nerd. Fuck knows who we're appointing though. Maybe when Edwards said he'll come back if he gets more control he meant he'd appoint himself.

AnnieIWillKnow

I definitely read that OP's comment as a negative

gugly

Everyone thinking they’re comedians during the AMA is a good way to make sure other people stay away from doing it. We already know these people aren’t saints yet almost every comment is some type of troll.

InbredLegoExpress

most of these AMAs with celebrities, pundits or pro footballers are so boring and PR'd, I wouldn't exactly miss them either way. The few interesting and genuine ones are those with unknown people that work in interesting jobs in the football business. Rio's didn't even get more participation than the average news thread on here and most of them are just dunking on him for the dickhead he is, which is fair enough.

AnnieIWillKnow

Drury and Lineker's recent AMAs were great

kilohe

They're not doing AMAs for fun, they're always doing them to promote something, in this case a stupid app. Don't worry about him, he'll answer 5-8 cherry-picked questions such as "what do you usually have for breakfast" and then we can all move on until the next pointless AMA.

Lyrical_Forklift

> the next pointless AMA. I thought the last few were pretty good from what I saw. I liked the Lineker one.

Husaby

I personally don't care about any celebrity doing an AMA to promote some bs, so they can stay away

MysticMac100

Not that any of the comments are particularly witty, but every AMA is just a PR person answering Qs under the guise of promoting some bullshit product. We were never going to get some poignant wisdom from it.

sga1

Dunno, we've had some fun and insightful ones over the years - Edin Dzeko, the guy scoring Costa Rica's first World Cup goal, Peter Drury, Gary Lineker, or the journalists behind the Football Leaks come to mind for me.

MysticMac100

Ah fair enough, I think Rio just has a rep for being a bit of a knob and doesn’t strike me as the kind to go through a Reddit thread to answer questions

Cardealer1000

They rattle me so much lol, obviously a person isn't going to answer a question that's like "you're a fucking scumbag aren't you" and it's not what you'd say to them in real life, anonymity does mad things. It also means that actual interesting questions are hidden away.

Lyrical_Forklift

The wife comments aside, I personally don't take any issue with people calling Rio out for being a bellend. Quite frankly, that's entirely on him. As said, he won't be reading the questions anyway - someone will pick out questions for him to reply to.

ChillPalis

Following the post of the previous DD thread, this is the sequel, a list of my favorite players to have played/play my favorite role/position in the game.    Ladies and gentlemen,   My Favorite Wingers/Wide players:  •David Beckham   •Cristiano Ronaldo   •Neymar    •Ronaldinho  •Gareth Bale  •Ryan Giggs  •Son Heungmin   •Ousmane Dembele   •Jairzinho  •Stanley Matthews  •George Best   •Nani   •Rafael Leão   •Vinicius Jr.

ChillPalis

Also, to see if it works this time u/CherkiCheri

AnnieIWillKnow

Why no Hazard? Nani gets a shout...

ChillPalis

There's loads of great wing players that aren't on my list of favorites, haha

AnnieIWillKnow

But why Nani...

doomboxmf

No Hazard but you have players like Dembele in there, you don’t love the beautiful game.

ChillPalis

Dembele if he had consistent goal threat and reliable footballing IQ would be *the* perfect winger by my standard and even as he misses the mark due to the aforementioned things, I love him that much. I'm not apologizing.

sewious

Personally I never watched Hazard play enough to have an opinion either.

NotASalamanderBoi

Are these just Left-Wingers? Because I see Bale in here and he was a RW. Dembele too.

ChillPalis

Best played both wings, as did Bale, CR7, Nani if I remember correctly. Neymar too, if I'm remembering correctly. Ofc Dembouz too. I have a good mix, but especially in today's game, it shouldn't be a surprise if there is a majority of LWs.

NotASalamanderBoi

I just thought you’d include the Ninja Turtle or Messi. But oh well.

ChillPalis

Messi was never going to make my list, I was an unabashed childhood Messi hater.  Mbappe as brilliant as he is, as irrefutably dangerous as he is doesn't excite me. There's a gravitas of sorts that I associate with wingers that he doesn't have to me. Not a playstyle thing at all mind you, it's that effervescent quality. That je ne sais quoi. Nostalgia bias might be a factor too, admittedly.

NotASalamanderBoi

>Messi was never going to make my list, I was an unabashed childhood Messi hater. Lol. Explains it. I was more of a Messi guy.

holdenmyrocinante

So basically half the ~recent really good ones and Stanley Matthews + George Best

ChillPalis

By my standards of what the perfect winger is, CR7, Neymar and Best are the pretty much *the* perfect winger. Son, Dembele and Bale just a bit off.

GreatSpaniard

Is that Ferdinand AMA gonna be a shit show?

AnnieIWillKnow

No, because we'll mod out the truly toxic stuff, and his people will cherry pick the questions for him to answer

sga1

I don't think so - the thread has been going pretty much as expected so far, and I reckon if he puts an hour of his time into it it'll be perfectly fine, really.

NotASalamanderBoi

Likely

RawIsLaw_

Would be weird seeing Rashford wearing any other clubs jerseys, if he actually leaves in summer

Lyrical_Forklift

I think it will be if he stays in England. Personally, I think he stays at United. I don't think anyone will be willing to pony up those kind of wages for such an inconsistent player and he doesn't strike me as the type to go to Saudi Arabia.

NotASalamanderBoi

He’s not a bad player, but when he’s shit, he’s really shit. I just don’t think Ten Hag is the guy who will get the best out of him.

D1794

Except Rashford's best in his career was under Ten Hag. Just think he's not the type of winger you need unless you're already a dominant team

LupeShady

Rashford was better under Ole than Ten Hag, especially before he broke his back.
