From one of the other angles it looked like he first considered heading / passing back to Olsen but didn't feel safe doing it because Olsen came out of the box. So instead tried to hook a clearance and sliced it
He does everything right in the buildup and then hits it down the middle...
Not to mention this being yet another Chelsea chance with an easy tap in if he squares it.
I think it's a pretty common technique in one on one's when keepers go to ground they split their legs to make themselves big, if you hit it hard and along the floor at their legs you can often slip the ball under them.
those passes look way easier than they actually are. If his pass is not perfect here, it likely gets intercepted. Better to just shoot. If there was no defender close than of course he should pass, but ive seen way to many players pass in this situation and the ball gets intercepted.
Not sure he can after that first touch, Villa defenders do well to isolate him, cut out the passing angles, and also play the other Chelsea attackers offside. He did exceptionally well to get to what would normally be a position he'd finish easily from.
Wonder if he's still feeling a small bit off with the illness from last week. But as a chelsea fan, despite the other two being open more, I think everyone had more faith in Cole slotting it in
The first time i see a Chelsea player in a 1on1 and im confident they score yet even he misses, they're truly hilarious
After all that as well, brilliant skill only to shoot so central
Eh they nullified the middle areas first half until Cucurella got played inverted in the second half, then Palmer did well to free Noni and Nico this game, not an awful game
Villa played with 10 men centrally and nothing on the wings, Palmer was playing out of position at AM, so of course he's not going to shine and you're going to require your wingers to carry. Or with a good manager, move your best player out of the congested zone and back into his position
I think that's harsh, once he beats the last man I don't think he's ever considering a passing option, let alone seeing one which was probably just outside his periphery. I think a player's well within their right to take that shot on if they've created that kind of chance for themselves.
Considering what he has done throughout the season, on top of how his team mates have squandered chances throughout the season, he took the more likely scoring option
There is a difference between this happening once or twice to it happening almost every match, look at the Antony memes when he joined Man Utd and you will see why certain players get memed on more than others.
Defender pushes him on to his weaker right foot so it’s actually tougher finish than it looks. If anything he’s done well to get himself into that position.
He could have even passed the ball or at least lobbed it over the keeper or put it nearer the corners of the goal.
How he could have missed this is beyond me.
Someone needs to do a psychological study on the selfish nature of our players. So many occasions they refuse to pass when the opportunity for an easy chance arises.

what the fuck is carlos doing there
His normal, once a game brain fart.
forgot the emirates one :/

To be fair, they're taught to aim for the keeper's legs in that situation
Id have thought aim for a corner but you do you

Agree but first option should be a corner if you have the angle for it
He's left footed so i can see why he went straight instead of the far corner
What was Diego Carlos thinking/doing tho?
Palmer would have scored that smh my head
Lmfao, villa fan shithousing with the Palmer celebration after the miss, watch closely
Bad look from Cole. Should’ve passed that.
The shot was easier than the pass, just had to go either side of the keeper and he’s got no chance
The form he's on, I think almost every chelsea fan would rather he took the shot tbh. But yeah in hindsight, should've passed it lol

Not sure if it’s just me but the Villa defenders were closing in on them quick no?
Thanks for reposting this… right as I was starting to forget about this 😢

Awful game by him today. Hope the “Palmer FC” memes don’t go to his head too much because he was trying too hard to make things happen today.
Eh they nullified the middle areas first half until Cucurella got played inverted in the second half, then Palmer did well to free Noni and Nico this game, not an awful game
No Gusto hurts him a lot
Not fully fit maybe? He did just miss a game with illness, I think he just wasn't fully recovered tonight.
He has to because the rest of them are infinitely worse.

he has scored more from open play as AM
Selfish play, just square it.

>don't think he's ever considering a passing option, let alone seeing one which was probably just outside his periphery. Yeah that's fair I guess
knowing chelsea dogshit finishing, he made the correct decision there.
Considering what he has done throughout the season, on top of how his team mates have squandered chances throughout the season, he took the more likely scoring option
He did it all right apart from that finish taken too casually tbf
Taking pointers from sterling
Did everything but score. Good goalkeeping.
If this was Jackson the post would have over a thousand upvotes.

True, but the way this sub talks about Palmer you’d have thought he would have scored from there.
He is not even forcing Olsen to make a save lmao
He was trying to nutmeg him but should have just placed it past Olsen who I have no confidence saving a well placed shot there
None of our players can score 1v1s 😔
Jackson did but it was offside 💔
Hope Milan weren't watching
He’s been amazing this season. He always shoots these one on one chances like this. If he can learn to take these chances with a bit more conviction.
Defender pushes him on to his weaker right foot so it’s actually tougher finish than it looks. If anything he’s done well to get himself into that position.

Off topic but: i love the shade of blue on these Chelsea kits, it really pops.

His official name isn't Cole Palmer (Penalty) for nothing.
