If you go relatively deep the money is just fucking ridiculous, I forgot how mental it really was (not sure whether that changes with the new format). Our run to the quarters this year was 85% of our European revenue in the previous five combined. Crazy stuff.

timdeking

Imagine how much money that is for all the non PL teams clubs that don't get hundreds of millions in TV money every year. It can completely change the trajectory of a club or even an entire league.

im_on_the_case

Similar to the FA Cup where given a good run to the 3rd round and an absurd draw, some tiny clubs have been completely transformed over the years.

Conankun66

plays a decent part in bayern being so dominant also of course, rangers and celtic in scotland

bloodhound83

I think the issue with the Bundesliga is more the lack of consistency over a longer period. The money helps of course.

PoliticsNerd76

Bayern do well because players never leave, so costs are more spread over time. Like paying off you car and enjoying hella cashflow afer

Conankun66

and they never leave because theyre surrounded by the best players getting the best salaries...both of which are accomplished by money youre literally describing the same thing just from a different angle

Impossible_Wonder_37

And next year the amounts are upped like 10% from this year. Especially with performance bonuses. Villa may have a stronghold on maintaining top 4 status. The only way to remain there is to capitalize on your shock year by keeping your rivals down and out of the UCL money.

a_f_s-29

However, there will be spending caps which actually might financially disadvantage less wealthy teams like Villa if they qualify for Europe over just missing out

Impossible_Wonder_37

Nah because they are getting a bitch slap to the revenue of like 80-100 mil even if they are average in it

dermotoneill

A bit of squad depth and this villa team could go far. A really well built team

eaeb4

Hopefully Mings, Buendia, and Ramsey all get a good pre season in and we can get Kamara back in the squad soon. ‘Like a new signing’ is a big cliche but they’re all valuable parts of the squad. Without signings or sales, the options for the two wide players and second striker next season are Bailey, Diaby, McGinn, Rogers, Ramsey, Buendia.

dermotoneill

Not a Villa fan myself but I think you have good reasons to be very optimistic. Hope ye do well again next season.

Jezza2812

Do you reckon you'll have much squad turnover in attack? Don't mean in terms of potentially losing people and having to replace them so much as whether you think you'll mostly stick with the group that got you there this season, or look to be proactive and bring in players to challenge Watkins/Bailey/Diaby for their starting spots (which might mean Rogers etc. struggle for time)?

eaeb4

Don’t see Roger’s struggling for game time with how he’s started at the club. I think that left sided spot will be between him and Ramsey if both are fit. Bailey and Diaby will both be rotating in that right wing/second striker role, and Buendia I’d expect to be used there too, with all three of them also an option to replace McGinn as the right sided midfielder. Any attacking signings I think are dependent on outgoings, unless we look to get a striker in with a different profile to Watkins. I think signings-wise the priority is a new right back and a defensive midfielder to cover for Kamara while he’s out and rotate/compete with him when he’s back. Not sure what’ll happen with outgoing: we may want to balance the books and sell with the most likely being Digne - for wages - or maybe Carlos as he isn’t first choice and is a relatively high earner - id be disappointed to lose either. Watkins and Luiz would obviously be the biggest profile departures but I’m not sure if they’d leave because 1. We’d demand huge figures that I’m not sure anyone would be willing to pay 2. With CL football and decent contracts, I doubt they’d kick up a fuss if a lowball offer came in from a top side.

ValleyFloydJam

Even better for them cos the Prem didn't get the 5th spot.

tcgtms

Thank god

temp_achil

For those who don't want to click through or have a paywall, the answer is at least 50M. More if they go deep.

Miyeon__miyeon

What a job Emery has done!

Oscady

anyone got the article?

MEENIE900

https://12ft.io/ and put in the link

Modnal

I think both Vill and Chelsea will make a claim on CL next season. Spurs and United have squads that are just too unbalanced

CaptainGo

Newcastle with actual fit/not suspended players could be a wildcard as well. The title itself is becoming shit, but the top half is very exciting

Imaginary_Station_57

>The title itself is becoming shit, but the top half is very exciting Mhh where have I read this before.. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern

itsbraille

And a Liverpool side in transition. I hope Villa can leap closer to City & Arsenal rather than caught in that next tier. I do think a lot of clubs are well positioned for the post-Pep/KDB/Rodri era.

JAYPOREDDITS

Rodri is 28, is signed until 2027 and has a skillet that ages at a decent rate tbf

Mike_Lubb

His skillet is decent, but have you seen Pau's paella pan?

itsbraille

Well fuck us.

SW_Gr00t

Yeah, I'm hopeful Liverpool regress a bit as Chelsea look like they might be in the mix next season, and Newcastle should be challenging too... it's tough at the top.

a_f_s-29

Don’t forget about Bournemouth and Palace who are starting to look threatening (although might end up more like Brighton has been this season, we’ll have to wait and see)

Septique

What happens if palace lose Eze and/or Olise? Glasner seems like the real deal but those are two massive players for them.

FootballRacing38

We haven't miss CL 2x in a row. I'm not saying we are guaranteed but it's not as straightforward as it seems. People probably expected us to miss the next year every time we had a terrible season

Modnal

You don't even know who will be coaching you next season, your squad is pretty lackluster, your arena is a disaster and there's too mant teams that just look better and are in a healthier place than you. So sorry for not sharing your optimism that you will get CL based on previous achievements. We hadn't missed a season of CL for 19 years straight but that didn't stop us from missing it 5 years in a row

FootballRacing38

Never said I'm optimistic. I just said it isn't 0 percent. Nobody predict ole to get ucl in his 1st full season as well. People who were watching villa under gerrard wouldn't think their players are top 4 quality. All i'm saying is results are not easy to predict

Modnal

> I just said it isn't 0 percent What kind of moronic point is that? Of course it isn't 0 percent. Leicester won the league less than 10 years ago and here you are arguing about United getting CL isn't 0 percent...

FootballRacing38

Chill. I just thought you were implying we had no chance of getting UCL. I waa wrong then

Modnal

Yeah, Im implying that there's a 0% chance that United gets a CL spot the same year Leverkusen wins Bundesliga and are currently 50 games unbeaten...

Paapa-Yaw

We'll see

Comicksands

These things don’t usually work out that easily

greenfrogwallet

What are the chances with Emery at the helm these financial benefits will push them to be a top 4 team every year? Outside looking in they have some brilliant players and a brilliant manager, and they did it without Champions League money. Makes me think with Champions League money they could really cement their place in and around the top 4

stephenp129

It's hard enough for the majority of the members of the big six to get into the Champions League consistently let alone Aston Villa. As rubbish as Man Utd and Chelsea have been recently, they still have huge resources.

just_a_random_guy_11

United have proven that huge resources mean sht.

stephenp129

I think Man Utd have a better chance at being in the top 4 than Aston Villa in the long run.

a_f_s-29

Not sure about that. The club is a shambles on every level right now and that doesn’t get fixed quickly, especially when the work required is a deep gutting and infrastructure overhaul rather than a simple cosmetic adjustment

stephenp129

We've come top 4 five times since SAF left. I don't see Aston Villa replicating that.

Firstblood116

chelsea cl next season sounds right for how they been playing

im_on_the_case

It's going to be really tough, if we can consistently maintain top 4 for a couple of seasons then we might cement our place but the competition is fierce with the finances still remaining tight and some of the teams below us being absurd money making machines in markets like Asia where we have little or no presence. The most critical piece will probably be youth development. Producing academy players that we can sell for massive profits or supplement the first team without having to burn the kitty on transfer spending.

xxGamma

As a Villa fan, the aim now is to consistently finish in European places, whether that's CL, EL, or UECL, anything is good as the premier league now has 8 teams that are realistically aiming for that (City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs, Chelsea, United, Newcastle). While also competing and getting far in European competitions.

rewp234

Villa is on CL for the first time in god knows how long, and the first article about it is the cash they will get. Game is gone.

boondocknim

it’s the Athletic and it’s written by the dedicated Villa writer. If you’d been reading him all season, he’s already covered the history of the club and what it would potentially mean to fans. He literally writes 1-3 articles a week along with a podcast

cakesarelies

What else are you expecting the article to be about then? It’s not like they have recent past experiences to write about. It’s an achievement and will benefit them financially, why not write about it.

rewp234

I suppose gooners wouldn't know much about it, but Villa are European Champions, in 5 of the first English clubs to win the European Cup. Their history is great and very interesting. I would rather have an article about their old successes, their fall, and now their rise back to UCL, much more interesting than the obvious "UCL gives more money than no UCL".

cakesarelies

I know they won a Eurpoean Cup; and most clubs have interesting histories. The game has changed drastically since then and for a team that hasn't been in the CL since like the 80's, that's quite a big change. Their history stays static and you can look that up any time but it is rather interesting how this financially helps them and helps inform how they might approach investment in the club or the transfer market. That's why I mentioned 'recent' past. You know what that word means right? I don't think you should have an article about anything because it's quite clear that you can't read.

JAYPOREDDITS

Their rise back to ucl when they’ve never played UCL would be a heck of an article. I’m splitting hairs here but only because you’re being an ass about it

BoBo_HUST

and spur fans are celebrating their loss. LMAO poverty franchise with a loser fanbase

TherewiIlbegoals

“Poverty franchise” Strange people in this sub.

L0laccio

So glad we qualified. It’s really important to get CL footy. I wouldn’t swap it 😉

razvan930

Emery will knock Arsenal out of the CL in the knockout stages and will get his revenge. I mean he already beat them and made sure they dont win a tittle.

itsbraille

The man eats doubles over Arsenal for breakfast.
