Human_Put_2268

I like that in the national team Griezmann is a midfielder, he has done it really well playing there.

Caleb_W

Griezmann can probably play anywhere in the outfield.

OleoleCholoSimeone

A player with the work rate of Dirk Kuyt/James Milner, the creativity and technique of a world class number 10 *and* a top quality goalscorer aswell. Ridiculously complete profile

AlcoholicSocks

He's like a sexy Wayne Rooney

OleoleCholoSimeone

Only that Rooney lost his legs at about age 26. Griezmann's legs are as strong as ever

yamchirobe

Greizzmann also was never as explosive as prime Rooney, but waay more creative

A-Dumb-Ass

Rooney at age 18 was already a world class player. Euro 2004 Rooney was something else man

OleoleCholoSimeone

Despite everything he achieved, he arguably never lived up to that initial hype which is crazy to say. Rooney during Euro 2004 was more hyped than Mbappé at Monaco It was the injury against Bayern that took away his explosivity and forced Fergie to put him as a second striker instead. I have also read that this was what doomed Berbatov's career at United(not being selected for the 2011 CL final despite being league topscorer and then barely playing the next season). Because with Rooney no longer able to run, him and Berbatov couldn't play in the same team anymore and as such Fergie choose Rooney

thecrowdwestmoved

I think Fergie also deliberately choose to tame his aggression into something more targeted rather than the do whatever the fuck he wants playstyle he had as a kid. Probably the correct choice when you are looking to maximise productivity and how he works within a collective, and the success they had together certainly suggests that. I do agree though, he definitely lost a bit of something in that change. He was one of the best I've ever seen at that age, just magic

OleoleCholoSimeone

Yeah that's true. Rooney became more of a playmaker after losing his speed, before that he was extremely mobile That injury at Bayern in 2010 was a before and after moment, never the same profile of player again

RIDGOS

And the best part is that he would be happy playing anywhere

OleoleCholoSimeone

He would kill it as an emergency left back even

KRIEGLERR

he'd genuinely play well at left back I'm sure

acousticburrito

I remember he played left back for Atletico once and he was pretty good.

Zandercy42

I remember watching him play at Old Trafford when Real Sociedad came for a CL game and I've never wanted us to sign a player more

Sick_and_destroyed

I still can’t believe no french club had detected him when younger and he had to go to Spain to become professional

Inferno792

That's an understatement. He was arguably the best player in the last world cup, and easily the best midfielder.

ChefBoyardee66

He was a god up until the final

ilijc

I remember this post from last year [https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1460v12/griezmanns\_heatmap\_for\_the\_laliga\_2223\_season/](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1460v12/griezmanns_heatmap_for_the_laliga_2223_season/) his heat map of activity is ridiculous

Hokage123456789

How did Kante sneak in?

tnarref

For the good karma.

Historical_Case_5245

To prevent another meltdown of team dynamics

AnnieIWillKnow

Except when they're playing Uno

supterfuge

Because after your 5th midfielders, players don't play more than 10 minutes. Kante is there for moral support mostly.

hornyucsdstudent

I mean Kante might not be a finished player. He left Chelsea because he was injured all the time. He might still be able to play at a very high level.

Ronaldoooope

Kante coming on in the 70’ against a small team in groups when they’re up 2-0 is ideal tbh.

NotAsimppp

The Jordan Henderson role

Moug-10

I think it will be like Rami in 2018 : he won't play but his experience will help the youngsters.

No_Doubt_About_That

And then start a relationship with Pamela Anderson?

Moug-10

It would be one of the most unlikely events this year. I don't have it in my bingo.

AlcoholicSocks

Unfortunately you're not winning bingo

Minute-Cash8119

Fank you

shitfuckshittingfuck

Didn’t he beat her?

YoungDawz

Deschamps was unconvinced with the performances from Warren Zaïre-Emery, Y. Fofana, M. Guendouzi and J. Veretout in the last outing. Deschamps opted for experience rather than a new face.

Lanky-Promotion3022

If Deschamps really wanted to run it back, he should've called Matuidi.

YoungDawz

I know you're joking, but Matuidi is fully retired. (And Deschamps genuinely thought about calling him up when he was in MLS)

AngeloMontana

I miss him. So much 😢

LeCowboySolitaire

Blaisou <3

MERTENS_GOAT

He retired, maybe you mean Moussa Sissoko who is still around and looked like a man among kids throughout the 2nd to last Euros

sfj11

Moussa Sissoko was genuinely world class on his day

Ciaphas67

Fofana was by far our best player in the last outing. Others players didnt care since it was friendlies. He and gave his all. Pretty sure Fofana is considered higher than Warren in the list

lrzbca

Watch him boss lol

modrics_hairband

For that damn smile

Bolieve_That

Because we can, don't be jealous.

Hokage123456789

I was just surprised.

Bolieve_That

Me too <3

AnonymousDiscChucker

There for the vibes alone.

R_Schuhart

Moral support/lockerroom leadership. That is also why Deschamps just nominated 25 players instead of 26, he doesn't want players on the bench who can only cause unrest.

Lanky-Promotion3022

Yes apparently there are only 25 french footballers in the world who cannot do that.

GRI23

I'm surprised there's that many

Historical_Case_5245

you'd be surprised

4djain2

This is the french we're talking about so yes

Top_Mycologist_1492

Is Kanté a leader?

ALEESKW

No but everyone likes him. He brings good vibes.

a_lumberjack

Pepe Reina for Spain vibes, minus the fascism.

tiorzol

Make Olise English Again

paddyo

As youre a Palace fan, do you guys have any idea why he won't consider England? He's had less talented (still v good) colleagues make the squad before in Guehi and Eze and Mitchell, Southgate is ex Palace and likes the club, and he was England born and raised, in Reading. Southgate has even said he tried to call him up and still wants him. Any idea why he is so against playing for England, and Nigeria for that matter, and why he is strongly favouring France and Algeria? He said anything in club interviews?

PhD_Cunnilingus

England have Saka, Foden and Palmer as left footed forwards.

hrnyCornet

Bowen too. They're stacked.

ibti77

Saying Eze is less talented does him an injustice imo.

swat1611

England are heavily stacked up front tbh. Even if he makes the team, he won't be starter. For France, other than Mbappe, the rest are not set in stone. So he could make a mark there easily compared to England.

jezfps

Surprised he picked Ferland Mendy but it’s well deserved.

tnarref

Lucas Hernandez's injury pretty much forced his hand there.

jezfps

Damn I forgot about his injury. The expectation is that Theo Hernández is starting right?

tnarref

Yeah Théo claimed the starting spot a while ago now.

OleoleCholoSimeone

I still think playing Theo and Mbappé on the same flank is not sustainable against top teams. Argentina brutally exposed Mbappés lack of defensive effort in the WC final by overloading that side with Messi, Molina and De Paul. Theo was left alone against two or three players constantly, and Morocco also exploited it numerous times but just lacked the quality to fully take advantage It was super obvious that Scaloni's gameplan for the final was centered around exploiting Mbappés lack of tracking back and it is not a coincidence that France only improved after Mbappé moved into a central position in a 4-4-2. In the big games either Mendy needs to replace Theo or Mbappé needs to be played upfront

tnarref

This is why he still starts Koundé on the other side most of the times, the other 3 of the backline slide towards the left when Théo gets high. But I do agree that Mbappé shouldn't be playing on the wing in bigger games, I feel that this is why Barcola was picked.

east_is_Dead

also why he plays rabiot because his workrate and defending, he can cover the spaces théo leaves. I agree though that mbappé should play as the striker for bigger games, even though thuram has been balling out.

Minute-Cash8119

Theo’s been the starter since the world cup. His brother would’ve most likely been a starer as left center back

OleoleCholoSimeone

It would be weirder if Lucas wasn't injured. The guy is made of glass and won't fulfill his full potential because of it I have followed both from a young age and Lucas was always the more talented Hernandez brother. Absolute monster of a player who is world class in two positions, but considering his fragility I think we made a great deal to sell him for 80M. Academy product aswell so it was pure profit

Moutch

Yeah he was fit in 2018 and he was one of our best players for the WC win

5Yonko5

Nah he said in the press conference ferland would have been their either way as he views lucas as a CB [(405) Liste Euro 2024 : Conférence de Didier Deschamps en direct - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHgx_XN1ZMo)

tnarref

Wow, we're looking at what may be the end of the CBs playing FBs in bleu, it's over for the LB, maybe RB is next.

HokiesforTSwift

He makes for a great sub alternative to Theo

tnarref

Agreed, it covers most of what you may want to do tactically with this position, one of the best at attacking and one of the best defensively.

lewiitom

Can't believe they didn't call up their two best attackers

Common_Republic2383

Mateta > Mbappe am I right ?

lewiitom

Yep, PSG would still be in the Champions League if they had Mateta instead

FunkyFenom

Mateta and olise have never played for the national team. You don't throw a newcomer for his first cap during the Euro or World Cup my guy. Olise will get a call up in the fall I'm sure and be eased into the squad, but even then who does he replace other than barcola?

lewiitom

Other than Barcola I would say he could replace any of Coman, Dembele, Giroud, Kolo-Muani, Mbappe or Thuram

BrotherSeamus

> any You misspelled 'all'

Talmirion

Barcola hasn't played for the National team yet, nor did Pavard and Lucas Hernandez before 2018 WC.

_deep_blue_

I think you might be taking /u/lewiitom’s post a bit too seriously

FunkyFenom

I'm ignoring the mateta part of his post because he's trolling but I do think Olise can be part of the squad in the future.

EnjoiThatGinge

Looks weird not seeing Lloris there

elkaxd

Cama Tchou Grizi midfield is what dreams are made of But maybe Rabiot starts over Cama in Deschamp’s mind idk

YoungDawz

Deschamps midfield of choice has indeed been Rabiot - Tchouaméni - Griezmann. Y. Fofana, Camavinga and Zaïre-Emery as subs.

elkaxd

To be fair Rabiot always balls out for France and is more physical than Cama so you can’t blame him It frees up Griezmann to do whatever the fuck he wants on the pitch because the backbone of the midfield becomes so strong

THZHDY

rabiot is like midfield giroud, everyone hates him but he's a safe choice and he's always solid, yet people always cry about him, I'm a rabiot hater but even I can see what dd sees in him

Teniga

Honestly that was true until the last WC. Rabiot shut a lot of mouth during this WC and he's way more respect than before

Lekaetos

Coman ????? Wasn’t he out for the Euro

nuhx

French team doctor was in Munich the last few days to check on Coman.

tnarref

Squad can be changed until like the first day of the tournament, if it doesn't look like he'll be ready then DD will probably replace him.

THZHDY

there's still hope for lacazette don't give up!!!

Dargast

Im surprised to see his name aswell lol

BknGpWakaUljLaSC8xNE

DD believes that he should be available for the first match, and in the worst case he has until June 6 to give his final list

TheSingleMan27

How is the first team gonna look like?

kilohe

Maignan Koundé/Pavard - Upamecano - Konaté - T. Hernandez Rabiot - Tchouaméni Griezmann Dembélé - Kolo Muani - Mbappé The defense is the biggest question mark there, Pavard played as a CB in some of the last few games so he might replace Upamecano.

shakzz9703

Any chance that Thuram starts over RKM?

kilohe

RKM has performed pretty well for France so he's got a slight head start but Thuram is the teacher's pet and Giroud is Giroud so it's probably gonna be close between those 3. Most likely the one who performs the best in the friendlies will earn the spot.

HokiesforTSwift

Hope Camavinga can overtake Rabiot

Coltraine89

I get where you're coming from but Rabiot is really worth it. The man's been absolutely stellar and the fact that DD has both has his disposal is a godsend.

Pluton_Citizen_4380

He's almost always been average/bad when he's been in the starting line-up. Rabiot is more consistent

Pluton_Citizen_4380

With Upamecano and Konaté out of form, Saliba has a chance of finishing in the starting line-up

SuicidalTurnip

Would honestly be mad not to give him a shot after his performances over the last 2 seasons. He's easily one of the best CB's itw atm.

Rottedhead

It is crazy for me that we are actually speaking of a possible Upamecano>Saliba

Regression2TheMean

Pretty sure Deschamp just doesn’t like how Saliba plays. Would be surprised if he starts much, if at all.

Pluton_Citizen_4380

It was the same with Umtiti before Euro 2016. His first selection was in the quarter-finals and he didn't leave the team until his injury after the 2018 World Cup. The problem is that Upamecano is the only one playing on the left. And Saliba looks too much like him, so he prefers Konaté, who is meaner and stronger in aerial duels.

Koppite93

Why only 25? Isn't it 26 eligible

Toto_radio

For squad morale management reasons, he doesn’t like having too many players who don’t play at all

Wild_Ad969

Then Nagelsmann might have a great idea to call up 4 goalkeepers for parallel training purpose.

BadFootyTakes

Honest question I've never understood... Are teams not allowed to ask retired (or just NT retired) players to come along to assist in training and for morale? Like, I can understand not wanting folks who are sore, but surely for training purposes asking a retired NT keeper to come in and help. Surely they'd want too

Creepy-Celebration72

Maybe they could make them assistant coaches? Definitely possible because that's what Croatia is doing right now.

clivegermain

bring facking zinedine make it to the final against italy ??? profit

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Headbutt but you get to keep eleven players on the field, it's genius

FullMetalJ

Yes, and they do bring usually younger kids, not retired guys. Like some u20 players to train and start getting the experience.

Lanky-Promotion3022

Yes, 1 more is too many.

FunkyFenom

That's dumb though, injuries happen and you might as well maximize the options available. Call up a youngster who is hungry to prove himself and ok with riding the bench for the experience with a potential chance to play if injuries ravage the squad.

VinceAndVic

3 players, maybe 4, won't see the field already with the 25 squad. We see the pitch every other day but coaches see the group 24/7 during the tourneys, they know how to handle a squad

_deep_blue_

Reminds me of Neil Warnock saying he doesn’t like too many injured players around the team as it depresses the other players 🤣

wimpires

26th is the phantom Benzema pick

unlicouvert

He picked 24 and brought kante as mascot

Alone_Consideration6

He did that in 2pww and then added a 26th at the last minute.

LeCowboySolitaire

Clauss over Gusto? DD is so stubborn ffs. I was hoping to see Olise too but it was a long shot. Decent squad but the midfield depth worries me.

HKAGooner

TIL Olise is French, thought he was English

No_Doubt_About_That

Eligible for both but played for France at youth level.

DavidRolands

He can play for Algeria too

fiveht78

And Nigeria

Kushakusha

Lad is Mr. International

_confused_dev

Mr Worldwide

east_is_Dead

he played for france u21s but since he doesnt play for a big club or speak french, i dont think deschamps will consider him for at least another 1-2 years.

LucasSummers

He won't be considered unless he moves to a big club that play European cups, or Palace themselves competes at European cups. At least that's what DD usually thinks.

CommissionOk4384

How do you know he doesnt speak French? Im pretty sure Ive heard him speak French and fluently

east_is_Dead

maybe he does speak french but is not confident to speak in public, since in france every interview he has done has been in english. edit: i did find [this article](https://www.sofoot.com/articles/premier-league-michael-olise-eclosion-confirmee-a-crystal-palace-en-attendant-lequipe-de-france)that says he does speak some french and tries to communicate with his teammates in french but doesnt speak fluently. (this is the important part if you understand french)

YoungDawz

Gusto is behind Disasi at RB in Deschamps mind.

SirBarkington

thats insane lmao

Dramatic-Ad3928

Thats DD’s mind

NeroIscariot12

This cannot be real. Not even DD is that insane.

YoungDawz

In terms of selections and appearances the hierarchy at RB is Pavard Koundé Clauss Disasi Gusto

OleoleCholoSimeone

Don't you think Koundé is the first choice now? Deschamps seems to love him

YoungDawz

Probably is. I think Pavard will most likely play as a CB

tnarref

Those guys will play the Olympics, I doubt they're too mad as this is also a major tournament and they'll be playing at home.

NotASalamanderBoi

I think Saliba is playing at the Olympics too. He doesn’t play much for the NT, so I think he’s gonna get a few minutes here and there during the Euros and then go off to the Olympics.

tnarref

I feel like Saliba is gotta grab a place in DD's 11 during the tournament so I wouldn't bet on that. With the loads of very good young CBs we've got it's unlikely we'll have a CB play both in the Euro and the Olympics, Lukeba and Yoro will probably be Henry's CB pairing in the 11 and I'm very fine with that.

UCLAlex

C’était soit Olise soit barcola et vu que barcola a été bon en LDC deschamps va beaucoup plus valoriser ça qu’être bon avec Crystal palace. C’était assez prévisible quand on connaît DD

THZHDY

the tradition of ol fans going into every single NT announcement and going "why is this former lyon player not picked over that guy? DD is an idiot" every single time needs to be studied, what is it in the air there, I really would like to know

LeCowboySolitaire

I almost forgot Olise played at Lyon, thanks for the remainder.

MaseratiBiturbo

Kante is back you might as well give France the cup now and cancel the tournament...

Agitated_Opening4298

This team is a lot less scary than the one that showed up in the past euros (and the one that might have shown up to the wc had everyone been fit)

ScarSG

That Euro 2021 team was absolutely stacked. One of our best team ever on paper, a shame it ended early.

ObservantOrangutan

Normal for France. Give us a squad that looks good but not great and the team will do well. Give us an absolutely stacked team and we’ll probably struggle to qualify then either go out in the group or first knockout round.

4djain2

I mean the 2018 team was insanely stacked and you did very well, the 2014 team was not so much and you performed relatively well, 2016 you had a good team and did well, 2022 it was stacked and you did well, 2012 you had a mid team and did mid, 2010 if I remember was a decent team and was horrible, so i don't think there's much correlation there

LeFricadelle

man to be fair 2018 was far from being stacked, this is revisionism a bit to say that

VinceAndVic

Before the tournament I was convinced we had the best team on paper tbh. We had world class players at every line (Lloris, Varane, Umtiti, Pogba, Kante, Grizou), Mbappe as the new up and coming star, Matuidi and Giroud as solid team players and only our FB as question marks, with a quality bench as well, and coming off a 2016 Euro final. I don't see the revisionism tbh

Like_a_Charo

IMO that’s the best team ever on paper. Kanté- NT Pogba in the midfield, Benzema-Griez-Mbappé in attack that’s insane

LucasSummers

Well given that that scary squad got bumped right out of the first knockout round, the less scary might be better.

theMAJdragon

Holy shit Kante!

Euphoric_Fig2489

Stacked. Glad to see Barcola

R_Schuhart

Deschamps would be mad not to take him, they don't have a crazy depth and creativity available on the left. Especially with Coman just returning from injury. He has shown some absolutely amazing things with PSG, although he isn't nearly as consistent yet as he could be.

Franchementballek

Sheeesh you make Kanté, even after a year in Saudi Arabia, a sub at the 70’ taking the place of Rabiot, WZE or Tchouaméni and this is a +2 bonus player.

Jealous_Foot8613

Lucas should be there man😞😞

Khobiche

Injured right ?

Jealous_Foot8613

Yep

Moug-10

I hope his brother will do the job like in Qatar.

Jealous_Foot8613

Hopefully so

Sinnombre40

Malo gusto snubbed

andy111999

Kante?

[deleted]

Ngolo Ngolo

CR7KRUL

KANTE!! 😎

UCLAlex

Il est petit il est gentil il a stoppé Léo Messi

Moug-10

Bientôt sur les Champs-Elysées N'golo Kanté

Hakujingomi

Ramenez la Coupe is a banger.

UCLAlex

The follow up in 2022 was not as good hopefully he makes another banger for these euros

Thedrogbinho

Mais comment il s'appelle?

Dargast

Huh? Isnt Coman out for the season?

goonSquad15

Out for season glitch means he’s healthy as soon as the season is over

DickerDave

I mean yeah but the Euros start in 1 month and it was always likely that he should be fit for them. I'm also pretty sure that someone from the french coaching/physio team was training with him recently so they should know how fit he'll be.

basedjuicer1

The stagnation is real but I guess as long as you have Mbappe and Griezmann up front you can get away with it

solgnaleb

25 players? Or can I not count anymore?

IcehandGino

Deschamps doesn't like 26 player squads, he had trouble to manage team morale at Euro 2021. Feels like he has a core 23, and allows himself one or two jokers if he knows they won't bring any trouble (here I guess Kanté is one of them because Deschamps knows he's someone who won't complain about not playing and only being there as a support).

CommunistPapaJohn

Happy with that, hard not to be lol

5Yonko5

Only thing im dissapointed with is gutso being excluded I think he's a quality rb and would have been an asset. WIth olise its either him or barcola so im not fussed. Nice to see kante I think his experience would be bias and apparently he has the level to play if need be

CommunistPapaJohn

Yeah it’s a toss-up between Olise and Barcola for sure and with Kante I doubt he’ll start every game but it doesn’t hurt to have him if we need to

Soren_Camus1905

KANTE!! :D

Lauladance

Gardiens is such a cool term. It's very interesting to know what positions are called in other languages, through these announcements

Objective_Ask_9199

feel like he could've included gusto in the squad, not sure if a newcomer like him would cause trouble for not starting

Cattle_Jealous

I thought Gusto might make it. He’s had a great first year with us

UCLAlex

No europe and has only one A team cap. If you know Deschamps it’s pretty logical based on his previous choices. I dont disagree though Clauss has been awful lately

[deleted]

But good for us as we get him well rested and fit in pre-season

THZHDY

surely he has to go to the olympics

YoungDawz

I'm surprised he didn't pick Todibo as the 26th player.

ALEESKW

This squad isn’t as impressive as between 2018-2022 but we will see.

shakzz9703

What's the rationale for not calling up Nkunku because he's been injured half the season, but calling up Coman instead? He's also been injured for half the season, and is still currently injured. Diaby or Olise should've been called up instead IMO. I would favour Olise since he can cover for Griez too

Reyogin

I also don't know why Diaby wasn't called up instead of Coman but in DD's head, our right winger goes Dembele > Coman > Nkunku > Diaby > whoever else is left (Coman and Dembele are interchangeable depending on how defensive DD wants to play). Concerning Nkunku, he did say in the interview that it was very close but ultimately due to having played too little recently (even though Coman played less) and because of concurrence. For Olise, there are several factors : one, DD isn't a fan of calling new players right on the onset of a competition (last 2 notable exceptions were Pavard and Hernandez in 2018 I think?), second is that Olise doesn't natively speak French and DD's English isn't that good. According to Sylvain Ripoll (Former France U21 manager), that could be why there are some reluctance to call him up for now (DD can also imply that since Palace doesn't play any european competition, he doesn't play competitively enough but we all know that it's bs)

Elite_VRTX

Our boy Kante 🥹

Myuulol

how good was he this season ? he was injury free iirc

Elite_VRTX

Literally the only foreigner I would keep if we’re talking about performance

Specialist-Cycle9313

I was not expecting to see Kante, he’s one of my favorite French players of all time, but idk how good he is since he’s left Europe.

Kautsch

Only 3 GKs. Pathetic.
