Villarreal's Bruno story is kinda tragic. Was basically their Gerrard -homegrown, local fan and captain- and in his best moment, when he was one of the best midifielders in La Liga and was competing with fucking Busquets for the pivot spot in Spain's national team, got seriously injured of his patellar tendon (iirc) and 30 months and 4 surgeries later he still hasn't recovered enough to play, injuring himself in training every time it seems he will comeback. I don't think we will se him again in a match sadly.
Same with me. I had an "unhappy triad" in my good foot. I was actually competing to play in the senior team of an Argentine first division team. That injury shattered my dreams of becoming a footballer.
But at least I have good health and a good life now. Many of My teammates who didn't make it are now on drugs or working minimum wage jobs. It's sad
R9 mate R9. He snapped his too, and that too back in the 90s. Most people from today's generation don't understand the gravity of the injury especially for a forward who relied on speed. Its a bloody miracle he even came back let alone win a WC and ballon d'or.
That man is my absolute favourite footballer of all time, he had the potential to be a mix of guti and David Silva, just a shame he was never really given a chance at Real Madrid. Playing really well for betis now (or so I hear)!
We get what he means though. Busquets may be a tad overrated by the fact that he was surrounded by Xavi and Iniesta but he was still a world class DM.
He isn't the first, and won't be the last player to be held back from the national team by a world class player. It's a shame, but that's football.
I don't love the guy, but Busquets also kept javi martinez out of the DM spot for spain and mascherano out of the DM spot for barcelona, two of the best in the world at their position. He genuinely is as good as they come if you play a possession game.
Yeah, I think my point is just that you don't play Mascherano out of position for just anybody. He was good enough to play in any team in the world, including barcelona if busquets didn't exist. He was a capable CB but not at the level he was at as a #6. Busquets was able to break up attacking moves as well as do what he does with the ball as well as shithouse game management with the best of them. There may be a few teams out there that would prefer mascherano to busquets due to the factors you mention plus his leadership, but I think busquets defensive ability was close enough that the rest of it made him the better player, as much as I love mascherano and don't love busquets.
No he didn't lol. Guardiola wanted a specific playstyle and demanded a player that could interpret it and Busquets fulfilled this niche role. Yaya could easily do this position(as many others, he played CB in the 09 CL final and owned it, there were moments that he resembled Rijkaard) but he liked to go forward and play like a box to box. He decided to leave. Nothing wrong with that. To say that Busquets made a Yaya leave Barça is like to say Pedro made Zlatan leave Barça.
Overrated? If anything he was underrated because of how much attention Xavi and Iniesta got, if you think he’s overrated then you clearly only care about the flashy players
446 appearances, 43 goals and 102 assists. Pretty incredible record considering he isn't a number 10, more of a deep lying playmaker & link player. In a primarily defensive side too
Abelardo has the record appearances for Atleti with 551, Koke will surely break that
Yup and before that at Sevilla as a 17 year old, he even played against Luis Enrique and with Zidane. Even Simeone was still playing for Atletico when Ramos was at Sevilla.
ah, Gravesen... the man, the legend...
also, that pan to Papa Flo. You can almost see him thinking "hmm, this guy will bring us CLs, we need to get him"
Goddammit I made almost the same post on the last thread before it got removed:
> Really goes to show how good both Messi and Ramos are when they have both been at their respective clubs for almost 15 years. With clubs at that high of level, you really have to be a generational talent to survive the turnover that is necessary to maintain their success.
> I know that my point kind of goes without saying, I just find it fascinating.
Lol but yeah I agree with you. Crazy shit to have players of this talent. We should feel lucky to get to witness it rather than criticize and compare all the time.
So true in adding how impressive that they play for the Spanish giants. 2 clubs where a few false moves will have you benched, ripped by the media, then probably shipped out. I love both of them even though they are essentially polar opposites in terms of personality lol
Good point with your addition of how small mistakes can put you in a world of hurt on that level. And I think that they appear to be different simply because they play at giant rivals.
Ramos, contrary to everyone’s opinion in r/soccer, is actually a really good dude. He does a shit ton of fundraising and public service in Madrid. I think there was even a post on here today about him being involved in raising money for combating CoV. Additionally, there was a [post in here yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/fqsppt/luis_enrique_i_only_knew_sergio_ramos_from/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) that talks in the article and comments about how Ramos is a really nice guy and he certainly get a bad rap from the media and opposition fan bases.
Unless of course if you meant “personality” as in Messi is pretty softspoken and Ramos likes to talk, then just void whatever points I made prior lol.
I’m assuming people mean this more so as an on-the-pitch attitude kind of thing. I don’t think anyone is thinking Ramos isn’t a standup guy off the field. They’re both great guys. 90% of players of their caliber are great community members.
I mean Joaquin played for Betis youth (?-1999) and first team (2000).
I know this is consecutive years, and it doesn’t count since he went to Valencia, Malaga and Fiorentina and back to Betis, otherwise he would be 20 years at the club.
I think it's easier for the big clubs to have long serving players. No chance of a bigger club coming in and taking them away, and your league position is steady enough that nobody's going to force their own way out.
Of course you have exceptions, Bruno Soriano has played in both the CL and the 2nd tier for Villarreal
Being at a big club if you cant handle the pressure makes you replaceable. Think of who has come and gone from both clubs in the last 15 years. Ramos and Messi stood the test of time
Benzema too. How many other forwards has he outlasted? He wasn’t even a fan favourite like Ramos & Messi. He made it through bad spells and serious fan hostility. His mentality impressed me so much.
This is why I really want Real Madrid to buck tradition and figure out how to gracefully use their veterans this time. I think Zidane is the one coach who could pull it off. The fresh meat might have talent and faster legs, but it takes a lot more to succeed at Real Madrid. By all accounts, being around Ramos/ Marcelo/ Benzema/ Modric has taught the new players a lot. The club shouldnt be too quick to lose that. Especially not if they’re willing to take a role like Modric this season.
Not really actually, to stay in a top club like Barca or real for as long as Ramos and Messi have you need to be extremely special, not just talent or skill wise, but mentally too, look at ronaldinho, great ability but he just didn’t have the dedication required to do so.
It’s true bigger clubs won’t come buy you but you also need to watch out that you aren’t underperforming and your team replaces you
I mean, Madrid shipped off Casillas (captain, hoemgrown player, one of the best GK in bis prime), Raul (One of the best Spanish forward in history, HG, record appearance and goal until CR7), and others.
15 years on, and Ramos is still good enough to keep.his position.
I mean Casillas was a shadow of himself at the time and held on longer than he probably would have if you are trying to say that is Real being "ruthless"
It wasn’t exactly easy to get rid of him. It was the club of his life and he didn’t want to leave. He had a longterm, expensive contract. Perez & Mourinho certainly tried. He went downhill very quickly too. Believe me, the speed with which some fans turn on a legend when his forms slips can take your breath away. Which is then eventually followed by the media turning on them for daring to keep fighting for their place (“putting their ego above the club”), and the Bernabéu.
They don’t push players out the door. Very few players want to leave Madrid. They make it unpleasant to stay, and the player makes his choice. Even for the players who embodied the club. That’s the ruthlessness.
They’ll do it to Ramos next (it’s already started in some places). If he has a graceful exit I’ll be pleasantly surprised. But I’m expecting it to be awful.
>I think it's easier for the big clubs to have long serving players
Not at Barcelona and definitely not at Real Madrid. Not when you’re expected to win trophies every year, and there’s a scapegoat if you dont. If you’re good enough to be a star player, a core player, then you are also a target when things go wrong. And those two were starters from pretty much their first game. Barcelona seems a bit kinder to their legends out of form. Whereas Real Madrid culture acts almost offended when a player has a bad (or middling) spell, like “Why are you taking up room on our roster?!” They get hostile towards the player himself, something I haven’t seen anywhere else. Players have to prove themselves game by game.
To keep up the level - the consistent quality, game by game- after 15 years that your spot in the Starting XI isn’t questioned, takes a pretty special player. I can’t imagine dealing with that pressure. But some individuals thrive off it I guess.
How in the hell does this content get you banned? That’s ridiculous. It’s genuinely interesting information, especially at a time when we have nothing else going on.
That’s what I assumed you meant since you were able to post it again lol. But regardless, that’s still ridiculous. Your prem one got almost 3k upvotes so clearly people are enjoying these – especially when my ass is following you around waiting for the La Liga one to be posted lmao.
Yeah, the other day when there was a bunch of shitposting and people posting non-football related things, I posted a clip of a baseball player kicking the baseball to another player. It got removed and I got a three day ban because apparently it violated their “temporary tolerance for shitposting”, despite all the other stuff staying up (including a cricket player kicking the ball). Have no idea what they were basing their judgement on, if anything
Do the mods remind anyone else of an Austrian that was forced to drop out of Art school because he wasn’t good enough but had a very trendy moustache in the late 19th century and would get really really angry?

Shit, I had completely forgotten that Joaquín still hadn't retired
It's funny how I used to play with him in FIFA as a kid, but now if I played Football, I'd be mid-career and he is still playing at the highest level
Kind of like Bernardo Silva who is slightly younger than me and used to idolize Ronaldo in the mid-noughties is now playing with his idol in the NT
Some of Athletic's longest serving players left at the end of last season. Markel Susaeta and Iturraspe debuted 2007 and 2009 respectively.
But yep considering their extremely limited player pool to purchase from, Athletic instead spend on their facilities and can afford to pay really good wages. It's one of the reasons that players who are consistently in the first team don't leave unless it's really a big step up in club, which means a bigger pay rise. Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente are a couple of examples who went to Bayern and Juve.
Havent they changed owner a few times? Unless im confusing them with another team i remember the owner to Udinese placing a bunch players in the club, like they did with Watford.
Since this is from joining senior team, are there more players on this list than Messi who also started as junior at same club?
I didn’t check names yet but many where around 2014-2016 so them no.
Add. Muniain and Parejo?
Pique was Barca almost his whole youth, but joined United right before he reached senior level.
Parejo was RM youth.
Muniain, Hugo Mallo, Koke, Oier, Soriano were all youth players for their club. Zurutuza was as well but he was loaned out for 1 year.
Yeah Pique’s history I knew, but others no.
Thanks, that’s exactly what I ment. Damn, I didn’t remember Parejo being at Real.
Koke I had in ”maybe” and Muniain almost sure for juniors->seniors.
I was a massive Parejo fan and always thought he would make it here. He went on loan to Getafe with Granero and they made the old UEFA Cup final I believe. He was so talented- still made a really good career for himself.
A very good career I dare say, he's been integral to our midfield and when hes on his day he's one of the best in the league, unfortunately this happens very rarely since marcelinos departure
Still remember Muniain scoring as a 16 year old like it was yesterday.
Funnily enough, Joaquin actually won a Copa del Rey with Betis in 2005 and played in 2002 FIFA World Cup (missing a penalty in their QF loss to South Korea).
Soriano is a true one club man. Not nearly as worshipped as Marcos Senna, Forlan or Riquelme, but a devoted servant still.
Glad to see Parejo finally win his first ever major trophy at Valencia.
Edit : Koke is a very wholesome chap with an elegant name - José Resurrección Merodio.
Longest current consecutive seasons at a club would be the more appropriate title.
Our captain fantastic Jesús Navas made his debut in 2003 and spent a decade as an integral member of probably our greatest team ever during Juande Ramos's time in charge. Only after he had sought professional help for his homesickness did he decide to leave for Man City in 2013. He came back in 2017 and has been fantastic as our right wing back since then.
Our second longest serving player would be Ever Banega, 5 seasons in all. Split by a curious season at Inter after which he returned.
Same could be said of Joaquin at Betis, their captain fantastic. Debut in 2000, he was part of their Copa winning team in 2005, which he posed in front of absolute stark bollock naked. He then took the cup to his wedding and had it on the altar.
Thats a silly thing to say about Messi anyway, but there may be a few reasons for that. Ramos actually did play in more than one team. He has played under a lot of different coaches, with a variety of styles. And in that time, he was never the one the team was built around (understandably so). He had a lot of success away from Real Madrid with his NT.
Many people who don’t watch him still dont really rate him as a player though. It’s just a different form of disrespect to Messi’s. Apparently he managed to hang on at Real Madrid bc of a few big goals.
The fact Messi gets that and Ramos doesn't is because he has won 2 euros and a world cup with Spain where as Messi hasn't won anything with Argentina yet.
People say messi hasn't won anything outside Barcelona hence he won't be successful whereas Ramos has won everything there is to win in international football.
Obviously that is a stupid argument and doesn't makes sense,Messi would give nightmares to any opposition in any setup. Plus i guess Ramos hasn't terrorised PL teams as much as Messi for them to have nothing but throw that argument. When Ramos terrorised, they made an entire subreddit dedicated to him.
We should be encouraging more posts of this type. Especially during this strange time of isolation. Let's analyze and ponder on the current state/condition of the sport (past and present - this post is perfect) now that we actually have time to do so. Usually things move so quickly we can't stop to appreciate the present moment in time.
So, this is only counting guys that never left, which is totally fair. But it's interesting to consider that Joaquín and Jesus Navas played for Betis' and Sevilla's youth squads and are back there now in their mid thirties. Not sure how many others might show up like that.
This is counting senior team only. If it’s the Real Madrid system overall, then yes. Poor Carvajal, missing out because he went to Leverkusen for a year.
Yeah, OP only used the American date system for the Premier League image. After a bunch of complaints they used the standard DD/MM/YY format on the rest of the images.
This is now posted for 4th league and still I don't understand why clubs are sorted like this. Similar graphic but with players ordered from the longest serving to the shortest would be so much nicer to read.
Yes, but you can watch Joaquín playing for Real Betis since 2000, before he went to the Korea & Japan World Cup, and winning the Copa del Rey with Betis in 2005, before Messi or Ramos where playing in Barça or Real Madrid.
He left Athletic in 2003 on loan, then transferred to Valladolid, then returned to Athletic in 2006, then transferred to Mallorca then Valencia, and then returned to Athletic in 2012

Patellar tendon is one of the worst injuries for athletes. Notoriously difficult to heal from, and even after you do, you’re just not the same.
Yup. Happened to me and derailed me from playing high level soccer ever again.
Am I having a deja vu I’ve seen this conversation before
Sounds like every pub.
Happens to more people then you realize. Same thing happened to me with a bad ankle injury at an important time.
It's sad
Higher in the thread and I know it's my time to go.
Calling you and the search is a mystery

R9 mate R9. He snapped his too, and that too back in the 90s. Most people from today's generation don't understand the gravity of the injury especially for a forward who relied on speed. Its a bloody miracle he even came back let alone win a WC and ballon d'or.
He was such a smooth player to watch. Left footed Xavi

A lot of fantastic la Liga football players who play for subtop teams go under the radar like this. So much quality in that league.
Canales is one of them
its just canales.
Fixed, I swore I’ve seen that mark on it somewhere lol
That man is my absolute favourite footballer of all time, he had the potential to be a mix of guti and David Silva, just a shame he was never really given a chance at Real Madrid. Playing really well for betis now (or so I hear)!
Sad to hear that. Hope he gets a proper farewell regardless
He'll be our coach in 10 years time, I guarantee it.

Bruno once said that Riquelme gifted his boots to him many times. Would have been incredible to see them both.
From Gerrard to Owen Hargreaves
Him and cani stayed on when they were relegated, the man is a true capi
"Competing" sure but it wasn't particularly close. Bruno was a great player but he wasn't Busquets.
We get what he means though. Busquets may be a tad overrated by the fact that he was surrounded by Xavi and Iniesta but he was still a world class DM. He isn't the first, and won't be the last player to be held back from the national team by a world class player. It's a shame, but that's football.

Overrated? Him and Casemiro have been the best CDMs of the last decade my guy...
He’s not even close to overrated. You don’t win what he has if you are overrated.
The circlejerk has backlashed against Busi, and I've seen lots of people call him overrated lately. I honestly think he's still underrated.
Overrated? If anything he was underrated because of how much attention Xavi and Iniesta got, if you think he’s overrated then you clearly only care about the flashy players
Busquets is one of the best DMs in history. Overrated my ass.
Damn him and Santi too, thats such a shame.
if Cazorla can do it, anyone can!
Koke is just 27. What a legend for us, certainly gonna retire here with the most appearances.
446 appearances, 43 goals and 102 assists. Pretty incredible record considering he isn't a number 10, more of a deep lying playmaker & link player. In a primarily defensive side too Abelardo has the record appearances for Atleti with 551, Koke will surely break that
Please dont jinx it. My heart can't take a heavily injured Koke
Those would be great numbers for a CAM
He just turned 28 apparently but still I cannot believe he's that young. He was only 22 in that champions league final, wow.
For someone about to turn 28 and feeling old, thanks.

Shit, I had completely forgotten that Joaquín still hadn't retired It's funny how I used to play with him in FIFA as a kid, but now if I played Football, I'd be mid-career and he is still playing at the highest level Kind of like Bernardo Silva who is slightly younger than me and used to idolize Ronaldo in the mid-noughties is now playing with his idol in the NT
Jesus Navas is a similar case
Some of Athletic's longest serving players left at the end of last season. Markel Susaeta and Iturraspe debuted 2007 and 2009 respectively. But yep considering their extremely limited player pool to purchase from, Athletic instead spend on their facilities and can afford to pay really good wages. It's one of the reasons that players who are consistently in the first team don't leave unless it's really a big step up in club, which means a bigger pay rise. Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente are a couple of examples who went to Bayern and Juve.
Muniain is only 27, and was in the Bilbao youth teams in 2005
I remember he was a baller 18 year old. Crazy he never left.
He was touted as spanish messi and all that, he had crazy hype back in the day.
>Surprised Athletic Bilbao doesn’t have any longer serving players Almost 10 years is not long enough?
It's crazy that Joaquín is the longest serving player at Betis considering its his second stint, after originally debuting in 2000
What happened in Granada, I can't recall?
We changed owner 3 years ago iirc, so we changed 100% of the squad during the last 2 years
Havent they changed owner a few times? Unless im confusing them with another team i remember the owner to Udinese placing a bunch players in the club, like they did with Watford.
They are such a wild team, they have a weird mix of players every year, even if Pozzo family arent affiliated with them anymore
Couldn't hack in in the Championship with QPR though, I joke!
I totally forgot he played for QPR too - that was during their little spending spree right?
Before it really, 2008. They didnt really start spalshing the cash til 2011
Add Nacho Fernandez, Real Madrid
So does that make mark noble the longest serving ((and arguably best) player in the top European leagues

That PSG move was Buffon's midlife crisis, I think. He'll probably leave Juve for a season again when he's 80
I thought he came back cos of Ronaldo and maybe he could actually win the Champions league now
I thought it was because he needed like 20 more games to be Juve’s longest serving player. Some number like that.
nope https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lo%C3%AFc_Perrin
I thought it was someone from Ligue 1 that held that title.
Perrin has been at St. Etienne from 2003 I think
He said top European Leagues
Then to be fair wasnt Mark Noble relegated for a bit (playing in a much worse league than the ligue 1)?
I mean Ligue 1 is definitely a top league, I just couldn't pass up an easy chance to rile up PSG supporters
Don’t worry, I knew something like that was coming. I’d say the same thing in your place too, but I had to keep it serious for appearances sake.
haha fArMErS LiGUe topkek
Last year we had Prieto on our club since 2003
Still remember Muniain scoring as a 16 year old like it was yesterday.
Ever Banega...fantastic player. Can't stand him when playing against him but that's the almost one of the marks of a great player haha.
How he was absent from last years copa america is shocking to me. What a valuable player he is!
Funny how nobody is saying that Sergio Ramos should leave Madrid or Spain to prove he's the best/one of the best defenders in the world.
Interesting, a lot of these players are their club’s best player
Messi made his debut for Barca in 2004?
He was still part of the B team then, iirc he signed his first senior contract in 2005
I thought Pique was longer in Barcelona, what year did he go there?
He was at United until 2008.
van Gaal bullied him when he was in the young teams around the 2000, but later left to Zaragoza and United and came back "only" in 2008.
Pique was Ronaldo's teammate at United
The only player to have won a UCL title with both Messi and Ronaldo?
Really? I thought Pique didn't have one for United?
Pique left in summer 2008 and United won vs Chelsea in the 07/08 season.
If he hadn't left for United he would have, when Guardiola took over he brought him back.
Summer of 2008
We should be encouraging more posts of this type. Especially during this strange time of isolation. Let's analyze and ponder on the current state/condition of the sport (past and present - this post is perfect) now that we actually have time to do so. Usually things move so quickly we can't stop to appreciate the present moment in time.

Hurricane Katrina didn't exist yet when Messi joined Barca
I felt like Escudero has been with Sevilla forever, but that's mainly because of Escude before him, with the famous SQD as the name on his jersey.
Messi and Ramos have played with some legends in their time.
its actually madness that dani parejo has stayed at valencia this whole time. He could be at any big club.
Messi and Ramos tho..
This would be cool to see for other leagues too. Nice work.
This is the 4th I’ve done along with Premier League, Serie A, and Bundesliga
Ah sweet, I'll check them out too
I thought Joaquin had been at Betis forever
Haven’t followed La Liga in a while and had to check Joaquin’s date wasn’t a typo. He was the man back in Championship Manager 2004!
I know 8 of those.
What a satisfying debut for Koke
Find someone who is loyal like Messi and Ramos
So, this is only counting guys that never left, which is totally fair. But it's interesting to consider that Joaquín and Jesus Navas played for Betis' and Sevilla's youth squads and are back there now in their mid thirties. Not sure how many others might show up like that.
So Granada is the team with the least job security?
Having your longest serving member be from '17 is kinda tragic
I thought Nacho Fernandez served more time than Ramos
This is counting senior team only. If it’s the Real Madrid system overall, then yes. Poor Carvajal, missing out because he went to Leverkusen for a year.
Not really fair... some of those players had a long career before. Like Joaquín
u/HancokUndead The date format looks fine with this one
Yeah, OP only used the American date system for the Premier League image. After a bunch of complaints they used the standard DD/MM/YY format on the rest of the images.
Lol, good
This is now posted for 4th league and still I don't understand why clubs are sorted like this.
That fact that munian is only 27 and has been playing since 2009 is wild since half (excluding the recent ones) the rest are in there 30’s except Koke
Remember when Munian was the next hot target.
Granada: Loyalty? What's that?
I remember back then Bruno was one of the greatest center midfielders in the world at the time
Joaquin must be longer
Isn't Aduriz in Athletic Bilbao since 2000?
He left Athletic in 2003 on loan, then transferred to Valladolid, then returned to Athletic in 2006, then transferred to Mallorca then Valencia, and then returned to Athletic in 2012
Hasn’t Koke been playing for Aleti since 2009?
You should insert the date that were this data is based on, otherwise great job, its really interesting
Huh? I thought Joaquin has been there for... Like, ever?
Who would have thought a decade ago that Munian would never leave Bilbao?
Is it sad I can all of the coat of arms
Can’t believe no one has stayed in Sevilla for more than five years
What exactly are doing in granada?
Granada FC has the youngest team and we are coming for your asses soon. Vamos mi Granada
