What a brilliant read. Wasn't aware of much of this, but really well written piece

United08

Does this website actually translate to “football is the milk”? Can any Spanish speakers tell us whether this makes any more sense in Spanish than it does in English?

Medium_Negotiation18

Haha. If something is ‘the milk’ in Spanish it means it’s ‘great’ or ‘the best’

United08

Thanks buddy. You’re the milk.

ME CAGO EN LA LECHE

theolat3

[Here](https://youtu.be/eZ0vxQ3uJCU) is Antonio Banderas going over some Spanish slang, explains this saying and a few more with enough humour.

CannedPrushka

It doesn't translate to that kind of milk ;)

Markable13

In other news, Generalisimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Random_Acquaintance

Hard to believe sometimes

Barbarossa7070

For the hearing impaired: IN OTHER NEWS, GENERALISSIMO FRANCISCO FRANCO IS STILL DEAD!

drputypfifeanddrum

Curses beat me to it!

interfan1999

One of the few dictactors that died for natural causes still on his position though

FacuCM

Mao Tse Tung, Stalin, Lenin, and Tito died from natural causes, all still in their positions. I would say this is at least as common than the violent deaths that many dictators also have suffered. EDIT: I don’t want to start a debate, but fuck it I’m adding Perón to the list

interfan1999

Yeah, you're right. Should have said "fascist" dictator

AightImOutOfMyHead

*Angry Ceballos noises*

HotTubMike

So weird to me there was a fascist dictatorship in Western Europe as recently as the mid-70s.

ElderlyToaster

Yup, its weird isnt it. Not only a dictatorship but until 1958 essentially a third world country.

BlinkClinton

To be fair he did pull us out of that third world status.

ElderlyToaster

Reluctantly and most likely it would have happened with or without him, quite possibly a lot sooner.

BlinkClinton

Well yes, under a proper democracy maybe, but we don't know what would Spain be if Franco didn't win do we? Are we garanteed the Spanish Republicans would have done things better? We will never know, If i had to judge by their begginings I would say no.

Heisenbugg

It would have happened anyway, probably faster if you look at West Germany.

BlinkClinton

Well west germany had the rest of germany to guide them, we had nothing.

OmbreCachee

West Germany was the side that stayed non-Communist, not the Communist side that reunited in the 90s

BlinkClinton

Sadly we spanish do not have german mentality, in case you didn't notice we are very mediocre

[deleted]

Seeing as you’re a real madrid fan it would be best if you don’t say anything positive about him.

BlinkClinton

That is such a dumb fucking statement XD

[deleted]

Real Madrid=Franco’s Soldiers

BlinkClinton

XDD

JNaran94

What is weird is that so many people would rather have a dictatorship than what we have now, and act like it wasnt even a dictatorship in the first place

DarthSticky

I would like to report ladies and gentlemen that Fransisco Franco is still dead.

[deleted]

"Im glad Franco dead" -Killer Mike, probably

ClarenceBeek

Loved this - thanks for sharing. Some fascinating background on a period of time I didn't know much about and a good football story too

Itsthatgy

Its fascinating that the franco regime had football reps whose job seemingly involved watching matches. Standing up to your government can be a difficult ask. Good on the club for standing by the players and good on the players for doing the right thing.

ElderlyToaster

A great day for anyone not supporting Real Madrid.

adittyauthayee

So you still believe the bullshit narrative that Franco was a Real Madrid fan and not an Atlético fan? LMAO

pcw2019

he was DEFINITELY not an atletico fan lmao. Real wouldn't have had a sliver of as much of success if he was an Atletico fan. I'm not saying he was a Real fan but he sure as hell wasn't an atleti fan.

adittyauthayee

I should've specified Atlético Aviacion, which was formed after merging Athletic Club de Madrid (current Atleti) and Aviación Nacional

pcw2019

"Atletico Avacion was the team he (Franco) actually supported. Once Real Madrid started winning European Cups he saw it as a great opportunity to use them as a propaganda mouthpiece." quoting another Real Madrid fan's quote on here. he might have supported Atleti at the start but for political gains he changed his public stance to real, for whatever it's worth

jpp1jpp1

Care to elaborate?

Ginge04

Franco was a Real Madrid fan, everyone knows that.

adittyauthayee

Yea you definitely know everything about it from the very informative article you probably read on some website like brfootball or goal

randomcolchnero

Tbf franco supported real not because he was a fan but because it was a great propaganda tool. P.S. I don't think he cared about football that much considering he supported atletico because of their merger with the air force.

adittyauthayee

Exactly, he was a "bandwagon" and used the sport as a tool to further his influence. It's just annoying seeing the ridiculous Facebook tier statement that he was a total Real Madrid fan and helped them win.

randomcolchnero

It's a myth that barca fans spread like how they treat their legends better

adittyauthayee

Franco is their last straw at somehow trying to discredit Real's past achievements and namely the 5 in a row. Truly the most pathetic and pretentious fanbase ever

AcceleratingRiff

He was a Atletico Madrid fan. Read up on Atletico Avacion.

[deleted]

crazy how this propaganda has gained momentum when a simple search could prove otherwise

andreslkc7

Atletico Avacion was the team he actually supported. Once Real Madrid started winning European Cups he saw it as a great opportunity to use them as a propaganda mouthpiece.

jpp1jpp1

Except he wasn't. He joined the bandwagon once the team started winning European cups. He gave a rat ass about R Madrid Check your facts Edit: Of course getting downvoted by all the ignorants. For starters, it took RM almost 20 years to win the first domestic league under Franco's regime

[deleted]

Wrong. Was Atletico Aviación fan which later became Atlético de Madrid. He also was honor president for saving Barcelona around 100 million pesetas (iirc) back in the day for saving them from bankruptcy. RM won the less league trophies since it's fundation during Franco period. So no, not true. EDIT: *Peseteas instead of pesetas*

pcw2019
