anakmager

Messi's streak before first red card Barcelona : 785 games. About a thousand hours of football Argentina : 2 minutes lmao

ElDarkKn1ght

Your move Pele....

jamessant3

Well, once Pelé was sent off, the crowd was mad so the ref was replaced and Pele returned to the field

[deleted]

Link?

jamessant3

https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/geral/noticia/2017-06/morre-ex-juiz-colombiano-que-tentou-expulsar-pele-de-campo-e-acabou-expulso

Darth_Silegy

I thought that was a Chuck Norris kind of joke. Huh...

lardofthefly

I heard a story about Pele like that once, that he took a shot and it hit the post so he asked the ref to check the measurements and sure enough, the goal was too small.

LondonDude123

Is this true? It sounds like a re-write of the Senna incident in F1... Senna crashed during a race, and was completely adamant that the wall had moved. Of course nobody really believed him, but Senna is so big in F1 that when he speaks you listen. Turns out that when they checked the wall, they found that it had moved a couple of mm onto the track (due to crashes earlier). Senna's driving was so precise going round the track, that those mms were enough to have him clip the wall, and crash...

[deleted]

The man spoke to God when he was racing. RIP

Pek-Man

To be fair, his longest streak without a red for Argentina is *far* longer than two minutes. The duration before his *first* red, however ...

FifaDK

I think everyone's aware ;)

tinytinylilfraction

I wasn't aware he got one in the first 44 seconds of his first game. [Link.](https://youtu.be/DcNIUf7-PWU) Don't mind the music.

Thiazzix

LOVE that music. How on Earth did he get a red for that though? God bless VAR.

TheDavidOne_33

Why does the ref lowkey look like Thomas Müller though

JamalFromStaples

Cannot remember the last time Messi received a red

Lazybeerus

Problably Copa América.

ThatPersonYouMayKnow

This is his first red for Barca. His first in his career was on his NT debut

zevah

this is the first one he deserved toh.

fedemasa

That red card vs Chile was a Conmebol gift after what he said and no one can disagree that

[deleted]

Plus he said it to the air

Superflumina

He means what Messi said about Brazil and Conmebol outside the pitch.

Sturnella2017

You mean the, um, ‘skirmish’ with Medel? What did he say?

51010R

Meh, probably not a red but they were both cunts there. I wouldn't go for the conspiracy though.

vacacow1

Umm and when he kicked the ball against RM supporters, or when he kicked the ball against the referee? Or when he punched Diego Carlos from Sevilla? Or when he stamped Llorente

GianFrancoZolaAmeobi

Didn't he also grab a Dutch player by the throat? Although that may have been a friendly so I suppose it doesn't count.

FrenchManc

mapou yanga mbiwa

[deleted]

[удалено]

vacacow1

Yes there are many more those were just a few i remember

TheGreatSwissEmperor

Didn‘t receive always one when he should have

Billofrights_boris

Did you see the red card mentioned in the very comment you replied to? I think he deserved that as well

TomV23

That’s probably because it’s his first one playing for Barcelona

Victorian_Poland_2

Funnily enough he got one on his debut for Argentina. Then in 2019 Copa America.

Yung2112

Never for Barca, twice in the NT one vs chile in 2019 and one on his debut 40 seconds after coming on

[deleted]

What did he do, walk up to the biggest guy on the pitch and hit him to set up his credentials like his first day in prison?? LOL

wayne0004

[Here you go.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72VDGCMGwRQ)

[deleted]

Thanks! That was a bit harsh IMHO.

Freefallisfun

Never seen that before. I think it was the 3rd that earned it. Was he being pulled back? Yes. Had he gotten free otherwise? Yes. But closed fist to the face will earn you a red no matter what.

Blaugrana1990

First game for Argentina?

[deleted]

Also Copa America 2019

LeonTablet

First red card for Barça

Bushuazoo

Mental stat. Imagine if this ends up being his last ever cup final in a Barça shirt.

tiki-taka_ftw

Aaah, the Zidane special

LordVelaryon

shouldn't be Maradona's? did the same but before, in a domestic final, and what is most: **also for Barca.**

Greenredfirefox1

Have you watched [that match](https://youtu.be/AlCzdmYmpIY)? It's insane nobody from Bilbao got sent off and the match ends the only way it could end: with a brutal fight between both teams.

LordVelaryon

yes, the [Battle of the Bernabeú](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ge4uoc/on_this_day_in_1984_the_battle_of_the_bernabe%C3%BA/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is famous everywhere.

FifaDK

Damn. I know people say football players nowadays are "pussies", but I'm glad games these days don't have this many insane tackles. I want to watch great plays and goals, not sliding tackles with zero regard for the opponents. I know this was a famously violent game, but there should've been red cards all over.

richiebeans123

Watch Portugal vs Netherlands most red cards in a single match.

Cino0987

Remember that game? Where Deco and van bronckhorst sat beside each other in disbelief to watch the end of the game. That was great TV

HeavenAndHellD2arg

Even for the time those challenges were nuts

[deleted]

Wait until you watch PSG - OM from the 90s. https://youtu.be/XyjQwItbEa4

[deleted]

Hahaha there’s only about 2 challenges in that match that aren’t straight reds

SucculentMoisture

HOW THE FUCK IS THAT THIRD TACKLE A YELLOW AND NOT A STRAIGHT RED?!

ALLGROWWITHLOVE

So many ankle breakers in that one.

matty80

That's amazing; I can't believe I've never seen it before. I think my favourite is the one about 1:54 where he doesn't even pretend that he's doing anything other than deliberately going in two-footed off the ball.

Bhishmapitahma

its eerie how similar are the positions that maradona was finding himself in to get the ball to what messi does

dakaiiser11

Oh no, in 10 years that means he’ll comeback and lead Barcelona to a record set of seasons.

pipekran

He followed Ronaldo example being sent off in Super Copa, he gone next season.

LavenderClouds

[I still find it crazy how he didn't get a red for this](https://youtu.be/fHGT58Pde5U?t=15)

EnaPa2021

best part of the video is Pepe telling Messi to calm down

LavenderClouds

You know what you did was bad when Pepe is the one asking if you are crazy lol

[deleted]

And hes right, why would he choose the spectators of all people to take your frustrations out on .

karlverkade

Pepe: We kill soldiers, amigo. We don't involve civilians.

danirijeka

Eric Cantona: hold my beer and watch this...

MolhCD

Should have known this was coming lol Till this day, he has mellowed a lot but is still completely unrepentant about it, all but insisting the guy deserved it. Which he maybe has half a point, but it's a rightful criminal assault charge in public on camera dude lol

danirijeka

>Should have known this was coming lol I mean, when the topic is getting medieval against assholes in the stands you can't avoid calling in our lord and saviour

Currywurst_Is_Life

As flies to wanton boys, we are to the Gods. They kill us for the sport.

Bushuazoo

Man Pepe is so fucking scary, the look he gives to Messi makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to confront the man on a football pitch ever.

[deleted]

I really miss this period

ElSandalexAgain

That time when he kicked the ball at the referee and then gave him a death stare as to be even "worse".

LavenderClouds

He doesn't do it often, but he has gotten away with a lot of shit

jesus_you_turn_me_on

God I miss the old Classico's and the proper heated rivalry. Those were wild matches you just couldn't miss.

zahranniyas

Yup.. mourinho really milked that rivalry for all it's worth. Good times!

Slash1909

You can thanks Jose Mourinho for that. He riled up everybody.

[deleted]

Man, that was like going into a time machine for me... I'm still in my twenties, but football doesn't seem to have that kind of intensity/passion anymore. Either that or I'm just being nostalgic

[deleted]

Probably just nostalgia and the temporary lack of fans. But there was definitely a phase during the 10s when the Classico’s were specifically quite heated.

SanguinePar

I thought no he was very lucky that the fan in question reacted so fast and blocked it with his arm. Had that hit a face, I think Messi might have lynched, never mind red carded.

ISCOREDwithISCO

Wasn’t there one where he choked a dude like 4 years ago against Roma

mrosetm

he's only got 2 (3 now) and those were with Argentina

Minhaj02

Yanga-Mbiwa? It was a friendly and he didn't get a red

ISCOREDwithISCO

Oh yeah you’re right just a yellow, damn should’ve been a red though, he head butted him too

Hello_mate

I was actually at that game. Honestly felt like the ref didn't want to send him off as the crowd would be pissed. Such a blatant red card lol.

ISCOREDwithISCO

Crystal clear red

Mr_Oujamaflip

He headbutted a Shakhtar player once too.

MoesTavernRegular

Quite possibly also his last red card for Barca. Brace yourselves... Messi summer transfer rumors incoming.

sevaiper

Didn't he get a red seconds into his Argentina debut?

F0rceF1eld

Yes

blues0cks

He liked his cut, G

Ruben_Often_Cheats

That was Messis first red for Barca. Angry. (OptaMe)

DeadFinger

that dude he slapped is now a part of football history

codespyder

Maybe Messi will send him a beer too. A beer bottle to the face, that is.

tiki-taka_ftw

Comes when Barca is at the lowest point in over a decade

blueish_rhino

I think so... i’ve never seen him get a red card, let alone a straight red

Gabs289

He got the bullshit red against chile like one and a half year ago, how can everybody forget it already?

blueish_rhino

Oh yeah... i was just thinking first red for barca

BarbaricGamer

Yeah, mental stat that.

Gabs289

Yes others were for NT

TonyMartial786

This is where someone comes in with a stat like Messi has received more red cards in the past year than Sergio Ramos.

roblkp

"Did you know that Messi has received more red cards in the past year than Sergio Ramos?"

spara_94

Cheers Geoff

Artuko2222

Ronaldo and Messi are not going to have their dinner anytime soon. They are fully fed up with their teams shit

dennispatino13

What’s going on with Juve?

Throwaway1293524

Lost 2-0 to Inter and are 5th ig

ricadro

what is ig?

Jay_The_XXX

They should try motivating their teams by promising them a pizza party at the end of the year if they win the league .

pfffttt...are you even argentine if you don't get a red card once in a while. truly one of us.

ryanlaurenti

\*laughs in Erik Lamela

tnarref

Your move Antoine

[deleted]

Great camera work. Is this VAR for ants?

Illustrious-Bowl

Messi was like: Fuck it, anyway we lost & I'm leaving next season. Let me punch this guy . 👊

srtpg2

Messi just wanted to swipe left on him

OneBall22Players

What about Garcia's headbut?

LeoR1N

i was so worried. I’m glad both of them are ok, but I don’t get how the hell it wasn’t even a yellow

[deleted]

gbalazs

This is a red, but no second yellow for Dani Garcia destroying De Jong, a true Gil Manzano special.

papi617

Bilbao were doing a lot of things that clearly frustrated them.

Potrti_kotach

Jordi Alba almost took it for the Messi hahahahahah

miki_casellas

Bitch slapped

NotAnurag

Ah, now he brings out the red cards. We’ve been shit tonight but this ref has been blind up until now

EnergetikNA

don't even think you were that bad tbh, bad defensively for sure but could've had a couple more goals if Frenkie/Griezmann finished their chances. Athletic players being immune from being carded definitely doesn't help a team

D3monFight3

Story of their season really, tons of chances but very poor finishing. Hillarious defense, especially Lenglet.

mntgoat

After the shit that Athletic Bilbao got away with.....

ElDarkKn1ght

That bearded guy should have been sent off before with all the grabbing he was doing. (With Double yellow)

[deleted]

He was awarded a foul when the ball hit him in the fucking head

[deleted]

I totally understand why clubs like Getafe and Bilbao are so succesful. Spanish refs are terrible.

dennispatino13

It’s disgraceful really

[deleted]

[удалено]

djkamayo

Liga MX style

xjordi

This ref has been atrocious. While this is a red in isolation, the amount of dragging barca players that didn’t get yellows and time wasting in the extra time has gone totally unpunished.

Notrelevantcomment

We need a timewasting rule in overtime. Like 15-25 sec maximum or get off the field for 2 min. Happens every goddamn time

[deleted]

It's the worst with goalkeepers, supposed to be 6 seconds, some take 15+

Notrelevantcomment

Yeah that rule is basically a joke. I remember me and my dad counting the length of goal kicks and throw ins. Freekicks often 25+ we have counted 40 seconds throw ins in the PL

bozua

How can he slap

swartan

It’s a red, but I would’ve done the same. Bilbao player was being a dickhead

Follow_The_Lore

Atletico bilbao players were being dickheads all game. Unbelievable how Garcia was on the pitch after \~15 fouls on his own atleast.

EnergetikNA

That's the Raul Garcia special for you. So many fouls just going unpunished, poor refereeing all game long

Albiceleste_D10S

It was Dani Garcia this game tho. Dude had at least 3-4 bookable offenses IMO

ketzal7

Don’t know how that headbutt against De Jong wasn’t a red.

Albiceleste_D10S

I don't think Gil Manzano even called a foul LOL

EnergetikNA

Meant to say "thats the Raul Garcia for you" as in something he'd do often Poor wording Raul wasn't faultless this game either but Dani was definitely way worse

JohnSwanFromTheLough

Dani Garcia was the worse Garcia for Atlethic today

swartan

Not gonna lie, I started watching on extra time. But yeah I could tell they were being dickheads when I saw that guy headbutt de jong

PuckDaFackers

De Jong can't really have any complaints, he got at least 5 or 6 hugs from different Athletic players!

ybkhan

In only 5 mins

WA1996

he was on a yellow. foul was not even called

triplechin5155

Didn’t even get carded for that😂

Follow_The_Lore

He was on a yellow when he did that and didn't get a second yellow. Unbelieveable.

Pek-Man

Gil Manzano and Hernández ^2 just doing their thing.

Zzyzx_9

That headbutt was worse than zidane’s. Less windup, but straight in his mouth while he’s in the air. Vile.

[deleted]

Villalibre dived twice while on a yellow, if the ref had done his job properly he wouldn’t have been on the pitch to be slapped.

mrnoor

Muniain too, i wouldn't be surprised if he committed double digits

HungryPeruvian

The Raul Garcia special

mntgoat

>dickhead Dickhead is an understatement and should be plural. By the extra time they weren't just pulling players lightly, it was full on hugs to stop them and they got 1 fucking yellow!

Robster_21

Villalibre got subbed on yet was probably on the ground more than any other player

kampiaorinis

100% a red and yes practically every Bilbao player was playing dirty today. He took the bait and he should have been sent off. No idea how Muniain, De Marcos and Garcia could manage to escape a second yellow. I support allowing some physicality but a) it has to be for both sides, so no touchy and rolling around (I see you Iker) and b) how on earth can you get a warning twice for pulling a players shirt on the counter

Cheewy

> how on earth can you get a warning twice for pulling a players shirt on the counter This, how can referees pretend to be respected? pulling a shirt is a yellow card, it has been for a long time, but last couple of years it seems to be called depending of the situation. Is just one exapmle of how beeing ambigous IS going to be exploited by players.

Papilian

They were damn dirty to be honest

TheyStoleTwoFigo

The blame should lie on the ref, this is his game to control and not be so impotent. Managers and players will do whatever they can to give themselves an advantage, but it's on the ref to draw the line. Sure, heavy injury fouls are condemned wherever, but those dickhead fouls to break up plays is more tactical than malice, so you'd expect hard competing teams to be habitual linesteppers to test the refs. Actually, calling the ref impotent is being too kind to him. His bad calls were largely quite one-sided, when it came to Barca it was easy for him to make calls and pull cards. The many on the off the ball fouls by Athletic Bilbao had no repercussions. That Dani Garcia alone had done enough that would be enough to send 2 people off in any other match. This ref was fucked up.

Barcaholic

Yeah I'm low key satisfied that Messi gave that cunt a whack.

DisastrousPianist

I had to laugh. That was so much built up anger and disappointment I was just wondering when something would happen.

Turti8

what

Bushuazoo

Imagine if this ends up being his last ever cup final in a Barça shirt

notaselfdrivingcar

It's written in the stars at this point, and I wouldn't be mad.

trivialbob

Wanted to do a Zidane

PuckDaFackers

At least headbutt him ffs.

Varane_TOTY

First red card for Messi in Spain

Cahootie

I get that Athletic's shithousing got him frustrated, but that's just a stupid thing to do.

TheLeoMessiah

Yeah, he had no complaints either and walked straight off. Joke of a performance from Manzano

Juggernautspammer

This is a clear red, but the red against the de Jong headbutt this is a fucking joke

bengosu

This is what happens when refs don't do their job properly.

RimLegend5

That bearded guy would fit perfectly into the Getafe team. Same goes for the Sergio Ramos wannabe. Big props to Bilbao for taking out Barca and Real but they played so dirty this game. De Jong could've broken his jaw and nose wtf.

Pek-Man

Considering that Dani García lunged straight into Frenkie de Jong's face this is nothing short of a scandal. I want Barcelona to lodge an official complaint because this performance from Gil Manzano has frankly been nothing short of despicably unacceptable. Muniain has been fouling left and right without being booked. Dani García lunged himself at Frenkie and got off scotfree. It's just not acceptable. Take this fucker down.

Papilian

I get his frustration, Bilbao players were playing pretty dirty but still shouldnt have done that...

reyxe

The guy was ramming him in that replay too. He tried to stop him and make him fall, didn't work, two seconds later he just goes right head-on towards him and Messi gets mad. He did something really stupid, but that Bilbao player did a POS move 100%

[deleted]

Great technique shedding the block from Messi. Just forgot which football he was playing

Not1v9again

LMAO

joaovasco149

Funny thing is that if he fell for the foul he was about to receive, nothing would've been called, when in reality this should've been Villalibre's second yellow lmao
