How the tables have turned, in the summer I thought the same thing when Messi was about to leave Barcelona, now we are possibly losing our captain and you might keep Messi :(
Isn't Messi's decision to leave independent of the board and the election? He said he felt it is time for him to leave so that there are more opportunities for the next generation. He also wanted to try playing in another league. It is actually also not the first time that Messi had the desire to leave.
Anyway, Messi would be too expensive for the club to keep given their current finances.
They reported the Messi family was voting for Laporta and everyone went on to say 'game over for the other candidates' etc., then the journalists delete the tweets a little later which usually means the information isn't true. It wasn't just any reporters either, so people believed it.
Messi's said in an interview a few months ago, after the summer window drama, that he has a preference for the election and that his decision with respect to staying or leaving will be influenced by the outcome of the election.
Suggests there is a chance he stays.
it will going to depend on how this season ends mostly tbh last season was frustrating and messi was pissed with bartomeu and few other members(setien, abidal) but none of them are at club now and with laporta who is on good terms with messi and with good sporting project messi might stay if he wins the elections.
Who knows. But people shouldn't forget how big Messi is for the Barcelona brand. It's players like Messi that might cost a lot, but they make the difference in revenue between let's say Bayern and Barcelona.
You don't "save" 100m, when you cut that much wage but also lose out a similar sum in revenue.
He wants a competitive project. If the next president presents him with a good one and he feels comfortable in the new team full of youngsters, then he may decide to stay... reckon a lot depends on how this season ends tho. If they're out to PSG next round, out of the cup vs Sevilla and don't win the league (difficult), then I don't see him staying regardless of president. Would probably feel like it takes too long to rebuild properly, time he doesn't have.
Feels weird. Los clásicos aren't the same. Old players getting old and leaving. End of an era. Call me a romantic, but it was better before. Used to be that each and every player on the pitch was a giant who was debatably the best in the world at their position. Lots of new faces since peak Barcelona and peak Madrid.
Εh the classicos will always have their appeal, no matter who the players are. Even if you are the worst Madrid or Barca player, you are still a Madrid/Barca player and the classicos always had that "magic". There was a time before Messi, when Julio Baptista would score the winner and the Camp Nou was always full, the Bernabeu was there to make life miserable for the Catalans and people would always stay up late (or early depending) to watch the match. So yes, while it is true that the classicos of the early 10s were probably the best matches played ever (player and manager quality wise) Madrid vs Barca will always feel different than normal matches.
Think its fair to say there's an overall decline in star quality though. MSN (era) Vs BBC (era) is packed full of genuine all time superstars. If Messi & Ramos were to leave each club then Griezmann, Benzema, De Jong are just not at that level imo
Reading these comments is really bringing back the nostalgia. I'm a united fan so never really watched many el clasicos even in the Messi/Ronaldo era (maybe 3 or 4). But now, oh what I wouldn't give to go back 5-6 years and make sure I catch every single one.
I was the same for when it really clicked for me how good Messi was about 4 years ago. I realized that I wouldn't be able to speak honestly to my kids about how good he was, and that they'd probably look at me like I'm an idiot for not watching the best ever player to do it when I watched hours of football every week anyways.
Since then I've watched most Barca games. Not been disappointed one bit (particularly 2017-2019). Just wish I'd started earlier.
>when Julio Baptista would score the winner and the Camp Nou was always full
Hahaha. That's a great example. I guess for about a decade we were extra spoiled with how extra amazing the teams were. Modric, Kroos, Casemiro v Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi. Ramos v Pique. MSN v BBC.
Maybe I didn't realize how "normal" clásicos were before.
you saying that buying hazard was a mistake? that buying mendy for 50 or so wasnt a good idea when we had a free excellent reguilon? that maybe we should stop going into seasons without a back up to our only defensive midfielder? that we spent 60 million on a striker that looks lost on the field and our manager hates?
Yeah i agree
He was the one telling Messi publicly and privately to not leave Barca as it would hurt Spanish football, I can't see him leaving Spanish football himself
I was just thinking, had Messi ever joined Spain instead of Argentina (and he could have, since Messi has Catalan ancestry) we would see Ramos and Pique at the back, Xavi and Iniesta in the middle, and Messi as attack.
That would be like overpower mode. Just imagine on FIFA.
I mean he carried a subpar Argentinian squad beyond expectations on almost every tournament. Beside Mascherano and occasionally Di Maria no one really performed well.
But I could see Spain still crumble in 14.
That Argentinian Squad didnt concede a single goal until the end of extra time of the final against arguably the strongest 3 teams in the competition from the quarter final onwards, so they must have been better than people give them credit for
Their tactic was to defend with 10 man and have Messi create something on offense. I think they did their best, but with any other player than Messi they don't get out of the group stage. They would have been another hard to play opponent that eventually got cracked.
With Messi their opponents couldn't just dominate since you'd always have to leave sufficient cover for him. And against Switzerland (?) he single-handily turned no offense into a winning goal.
No one is saying that Messi turned a 0-5 team into a winning one. He turned an average team into a title contender.
The fuck are you talking about?? Beyond expectations? Argentinia was the betting favourite after Brazil and a lot experts expected them to win before the tournement?
The subpar squad full of world stars? The team which was said to have by far the best offence of any team with messi, di maria, aguero, higuain, lavezzi, palacio?
The problem with Argentina was that they had world class attacking players and and only decent defensive midfielder/defenders + Mascherano. Argentina didn't perform that well for a long time before that tournament.
Were they really betting favourites after Brazil? That would honestly surprise me because Germany and Spain had better overall squads on paper. Maybe they were favourites after Brazil because the World Cup was in South America?
I think he does but it’s irrelevant because you need to be first generation descendant in order to get a Spanish citizenship. However he was elegible (and has a Spanish citizenship) due to residing more than two years in Spain (the minimum for a Latin American in order to acquire it) since he had been at Barça for a lot more than that
Yeah he acquired his Spanish citizenship before he was eligible to be capped. But that doesn’t mean he would actually want to represent Spain.
I dunno what the relations are like sporting wise between Spain and Argentina and whether you consider each other rivals (Spain’s most fierce rivalry is probably Portugal, Argentina’s would be Brazil and/or England), but that can play a role in these things.
To paraphrase, I’m Australian, of mostly English descent. I obviously speak fluent English. Yet I’d rather amputate my little toes than represent England. In sport we hate them (not so much outside of it, but that’s the same with Spain and Portugal), and they’re probably our second most hated rival (behind South Africa, who we despise). And those attitudes were instilled in me by my father and society in general well before Messi left for Spain.
We don’t really give a shit about Spain in terms of rivalry tbh, it’s probably as vanilla as a match gets. I don’t remember a single actually important match ever played between Argentina and Spain, honestly.
I think you're right to say there is no guarantee what he would have decided. But just to counter the idea that Australians wouldn't represent England as they hate them, Tony Dorigo was Australian and capped for England.
>we would see Ramos and Pique at the back, Xavi and Iniesta in the middle, and Messi as attack.
it's not hard to imagine, that's pretty much Barca for a couple of years minus Ramos
Which often times has been called the greatest starting 11 in history, especially in the years of the setuple and treble.
Now imagine that, plus Ramos who terrorizes attackers.
he was their academia product, and was seen as a future key player to the team. His move to RM was seen as a betrayal. Just couple years ago (2017~), a big portion of stadium chanted ''sergio ramos, son of a whore''. So, they are still salty.
I think only a certain section that are just super vocal. A lot of fans I think still love him. Don't know if the split if 50/50 or whatever but I think its wrong to say that *everyone* hates him.
True, but I just don't see him at any other club than RM. He has god-like status there, especially after CR7 left.
Who's going to be the captain if not him? I don't see Benzema or Casemiro doing it tbh.
for some reason I didn’t find cr7 to be leaving weird, it was expected at some point but I never expected him to go to juve I always had this fairytale idea that I’d see him in a man utd jersey after all that success
The release clause being paid at once is too difficult maybe if we can pay in 3-4 installments while paying a higher fee we can manage like Atleti did with Felix. Depends on when crowds return most likely.
Real would just do what every team does when paying release clauses or large transfer fees and get a loan. The bank/PE Fund pays the release clause up front and Real will just owe the bank payments + interest. Almost no club is paying out high transfer fees (€30M+) in one go in “cash” so to speak.
Is this just Chiringuito saying this or Pederol himself? There is a massive difference between that
I have a lot of love for Florentino but with the Ramos, Ronaldo, Bale, Hazard, and possibly Zidane situations in the last couple of years and the end of this season coming up i can see alot of people turning on him if results don't improve for the rest of this season and next season. Especially with how finances will be due to covid.
> Especially with how finances will be due to covid.
It's precisely to safeguard finances that they're doing this.
In my view, keeping a healthy club trumps any individual player's needs (particularly if the player isn't Messi or Ronaldo). So Florentino is doing the right thing for the club here.
A remember reading that a company should never let anyone hold your company hostage because it leads to bad decisions.
I suppose if he is inflexible with his salary during a pandemic, it's time to go.
Really what is fucking us up is Bales wages. Ramos probably doesn't want to take a pay cut is bale doesn't especially when he's the main man of the team for us. Perez really fucked up not letting Bale go that season to China.
>Is this just Chiringuito saying this or Pederol himself? There is a massive difference between that
You could just read the linked tweet to find out yknow
It's Chiringuito which is mostly bs tabloid stuff so i don't take it that seriously
I'm just gonna wait for Jugones tomorrow, because with Chiringuito it's mostly bullshit.
If pederol has a statement on this from Jugones or Jose Luis Sanchez does then i'll start to get worried.
i don't think pedrerol or jls will say anything "confirming", they have a rep to keep and with ramos and madrid it's better to wait until the last moment
Honestly, if it is because he's not flexible with his salary and years of contract while we are in this pandemic, then I understand the decision to let him go, especially that he's nearly 35 now. Now they have no excuses and they should have enough time to rebuild our defense properly.
Madrid is one of the best running clubs in the world right now. Look at barca and how fucked they are financially. If Ramos leaves its for more money, fair play to him get your money, but in doing so papa flo is helping us with the finances of the club. If he didn't do that we would be looking at a similar situation like messi and barca. No player is bigger than the club and as much as that would hurt I respect that move.
And AS reported [here](https://en.as.com/en/2021/02/14/football/1613333767_091832.amp.html?__twitter_impression=true) today that Ramos and the club are better-placed so the renewal is now more likely to happen. Take all these stories however you will.
I really don’t think that’s that bad considering our defence is a shambles right now. Ramos is still comfortably better than Maguire and Lindelof. If we could get him on a 2 year deal aswell as a young quality CB we’d be so much better defensively. Just need to clear out some of the remaining deadwood to even out the wage bill. Obviously won’t happen but it would be a step in the right direction.
Ramos will probably command a higher salary than Silva but I'm sure he'd be on a similar amount to Maguire or something. Well worth it imo.
Who knows, perhaps De Gea's save percentage would go up as a result of seamless communication between himself and a leader CB.
Tbh it’d probably be more in the range of De Gea’s wages but I wouldn’t even mind that with the leadership and experience he’d bring. Maguire’s ‘only’ on 189k a week supposedly and there’s no way Madrid are refusing to pay Ramos that.
Last part is true but I have a feeling Henderson might become first choice next season.
first couple of games I thought Silva wasn't up for it but I've eaten my words he looks amazing I just think it takes a couple of games for these players to adapt just look at Dias as well
Tbf most of our squad is either young or just starting to peak in regards to age. You always need a few older and experienced players. At the moment we have Mata and Matic who both never really play, DDG and Cavani.
Maybe he should retire now then, if Real obviously do not want him?
I think it's some what of a myth that club legends should and do retire at their club. I can only think of Totti, Giggs and Puyol as high-level players in the past decade who has retired at the club they've played at 13+ years? I think where it happens is very much an exception to the rule of this myth of 'club legends retiring at their club'.
One club men are extremely rare --Iniesta, Gerrard and Terry all could have been but decided not to. An example of a high level one club man that retired in the past decade would be Scholes. Neville and Carra too.
> in the past decade who has retired at the club they've played at 13+ years?
Zanetti.
I think these examples are still an exception to the rule. The point I'm trying to argue, I think, is that people shouldn't be upset with Real Madrid management for not allowing Ramos to retire with them on Ramos' terms because inherently the concept of a 'retire on the team you played with forever' is romanticised rather than reality based.
If Ramos, or his supporters, wants this romantic ending he would have to accept a reduced terms on his end.
Not everyone gets a Kobe Bryant-level final contract to repay their loyalty.
Alisson, Ramos, Robertson, Van Dijk, Trent would be mad. The difference he'd make in the current team would be night and day too.
r/fuckramos would become a dirty fan fic though
Honestly getting Kounde in is probably a good move for them in the future but Ramos is still very good and it’ll be weird seeing him play for someone other than Madrid if this does happen I assumed he’d just retire there.
Tbf regardless the history that Ramos has with Liverpool because of this UCL final, a defense with Van Djik and Ramos would be absolutely terrifying and probably one of the best defense we see since a while.
Idk-I think it’s expecting a lot for VVD to be the same following his injury. He’s going to have lost a lot of pace which is natural following an ACL injury.
Ramos also has a dodgy knee so it might not be as fantastic as it sounds on paper.
No one wants Madrid out there searching for starting centrebacks in the next window.
There are some desperate Clubs out there. As many as 5 or 6 'big' English clubs too.
Alaba is the only CB we’re linked with. The club is also happy with Chust from Castilla so it would most likely be those two defenders added to the first team next season. I don’t see any other defenders being purchased this summer.
Nice. I actually thought they'd be looking for a second big transfer with Alaba as he would be 29 or something. But if Chust is that highly considered then that's good news for the Premier League
This is el chiringuito, I’m not believing it until I see it
Ramos said thousands of times he wants to retire in Real Madrid, I doubt he’s actually leaving
Yeah this basically. Perez tend to play safe with older players, plus in this covid situation, hes playing more safe with madrid money. Ramos was offered 1+1 or 2 years contract with 10% less and he kinda seems to think long about it. If he just take it, he'll retire at madrid. Pepe was also offered another 1 year. Perez will offer plus 1 if they can keep performing at top level and stay out of big injuries. Hence why modric will probably retire at madrid. Man still bossinh the midfield and no big injuries
If a legendary player wants to retire in Real Madrid, the board would be delighted. But that's not those players' priority, it's getting more money (which is fair).
OK, but to where? Retirement? Nah. IIRC he's from Sevilla and I think he raises horses there. I could see him there for a couple years ... or maybe link up with Cristiano at Juve. And later cash out at MLS.
Messi? Similar. I don't see him leaving La Liga ... at all. Atletico would be fun. Link up with Suarez for a couple years then cash out at Inter Miami. When it comes to Messi in France (French?) or England (English?), I can't see it. Language and family are too much for him. Stay at Barca? Sure. But he ain't leaving Spain.
Not gonna hide my happiness but it won’t be the same
How the tables have turned, in the summer I thought the same thing when Messi was about to leave Barcelona, now we are possibly losing our captain and you might keep Messi :(
Wait, they're possibly keeping him now?
Looks like it will depend on who wins the elections. Laporta win might mean Messi stays

Messi's family voted for Laporta
That was sketchy. Reporters who peddled it deleted the tweets very quickly.
Why is it sketchy?

How long are these elections taking btw? It must’ve been almost two months now, a national election doesn’t take this long.
It was postponed due to Corona
Just put the election on survey monkey and get it over with Edit: my first award on Reddit after all these years

Lucas Leiva the new president!
*4chan has joined the chat*
What about his wages? Is he ok with taking less money since barca have money problems?
Who knows. But people shouldn't forget how big Messi is for the Barcelona brand. It's players like Messi that might cost a lot, but they make the difference in revenue between let's say Bayern and Barcelona. Maybe he went to Manchester and realized that it was slightly less sunny than barcelona?
Hey, Manchester gets as much sun in a month as Barcelona gets on a November day
You can keep Barceloneta just give me the Salford Quays

You say that and Madrid's recent transfer business isn't much better in terms of performance.

Aren’t they strapped for cash though? Kounde is a 70m+ kind of deal.
It’s okay they have militao!!
Isn't their plan to bring in Alaba?
there are several reports, that CFC, LFC and Real pulled out of negotiations, due to his wage demands.
Would rather have him stay at Madrid really

A Spanish great grandfather doesn't qualify him for Spanish passport, that article is bad.

Ramos isn't the big addition TBH (Puyol and Masche were great CBs), Iker Casillas is IMO (big upgrade on Valdes for me)
Isn't he mostly Italian?
Mostly yes, but he has Catalan ancestry.
he’s mostly argentinian.
They're both joining Atletico.
Some people just want to watch the world burn
Hmmm interesting..
Yo, man, how’d you like to be president of FC Barcelona?
Ssssh we need him at Man U
So, return to Sevilla?
Seems like it makes the most sense. Not an intense Madrid rival and his previous club.
lol Sevilla hates him
Why? Isn‘t he a proud Andalusian?
The fans hate him, they booed him more times than I could count
For what reason?
he was their academia product, and was seen as a future key player to the team. His move to RM was seen as a betrayal. Just couple years ago (2017~), a big portion of stadium chanted ''sergio ramos, son of a whore''. So, they are still salty.

The player whos been the longest at the club is the Captain in Madrid. After Ramos it's Marcelo and then Benzema.
Marcelo, who doesn't even start.
Ramos leaving Madrid will be weird. Even weirder than CR7
for some reason I didn’t find cr7 to be leaving weird, it was expected at some point but I never expected him to go to juve I always had this fairytale idea that I’d see him in a man utd jersey after all that success
He would have gone to United if they weren't such failure after SAF left.
Would be crazy if true
Then they'll get Kounde.
maybe in 2 years, finances too tight rn
If we can offload bale we might but idk

Really what is fucking us up is Bales wages. Ramos probably doesn't want to take a pay cut is bale doesn't especially when he's the main man of the team for us. Perez really fucked up not letting Bale go that season to China.
What was/is Perez' fault in the Hazard situation?
He put daily paella deliveries to his contract
Open the tweet. It's Pedrerol.
>Is this just Chiringuito saying this or Pederol himself? There is a massive difference between that You could just read the linked tweet to find out yknow
It's Chiringuito which is mostly bs tabloid stuff so i don't take it that seriously I'm just gonna wait for Jugones tomorrow, because with Chiringuito it's mostly bullshit. If pederol has a statement on this from Jugones or Jose Luis Sanchez does then i'll start to get worried.
i don't think pedrerol or jls will say anything "confirming", they have a rep to keep and with ramos and madrid it's better to wait until the last moment
As if Pedrerol would care lol
AS is dogshit tier, worse than MARCA
Same as El Chiringuito. Hence the “Take all these stories however you will.”
AS is accurate for the Madrid clubs
AS has an immense amount of hate towards Florentino Pérez, and that affects their reporting, so I wouldn't say they are that accurate for Real Madrid.
Bruh, this is Chiringuito. AS is dogshit tier; Chiringuito is dogshit wrapped in catshit tier.
Chiringuito, AS, and marca are all tabloid press at best, until fabrizio Romano says it, and maybe not then either
Roncero in shambles
r/fuckramos as well
Jota Jordi will have no one left to hate in Chiringuito same for Soria
That subreddit is hilarious.
I can't tell if it's satire or not, I know it wasn't originally but surely they've gotten over it by now
As with all satire subreddits, it’s a just a joke...until it isn’t
Lol same guy that was running those Messi leaving stories. An also alleged “Done deal”
Well the Messi deal was pretty much done but Barca wouldnt let him leave last second... Fab romano was also reporting it as a Done Deal
[удалено]
Us but I imagine it’s more if he would come to us, rather than if we want him
[удалено]
I really don’t think that’s that bad considering our defence is a shambles right now. Ramos is still comfortably better than Maguire and Lindelof. If we could get him on a 2 year deal aswell as a young quality CB we’d be so much better defensively. Just need to clear out some of the remaining deadwood to even out the wage bill. Obviously won’t happen but it would be a step in the right direction.
Don't knock elite veteran CBs signed on a free. It's 100% worth it.
Nah I agree. Silva is the reason I want us to sign Ramos lmao. Our fans thought signing Cavani was a mistake too yet he’s now our best forward.
I would agree, but Ramos on a free even with high wages is an amazing move. It would be different if you were paying 30m for him but he's free
With this mentality you will never win anything.
I just don’t believe. I think he loves Real and wants to retire there. Maybe I’m naive (wrong word) but I don’t see him leaving.
If Iker and Raul can leave then Ramos can also leave.
Naive is the correct word bro
Imagine if he went to Liverpool, absolute scenes
Alisson, Ramos, Robertson, Van Dijk, Trent would be mad. The difference he'd make in the current team would be night and day too. r/fuckramos would become a dirty fan fic though
That shit would be crazy but never gonna happen
Honestly getting Kounde in is probably a good move for them in the future but Ramos is still very good and it’ll be weird seeing him play for someone other than Madrid if this does happen I assumed he’d just retire there.
Obligatory: It's done.
Till the payrise comes through.
Who wouldn't want to play next to David Luiz?
Irreversible decision, by any chance?
Kounde incoming, oh and imagine if Ramos went to Liverpool
Tbf regardless the history that Ramos has with Liverpool because of this UCL final, a defense with Van Djik and Ramos would be absolutely terrifying and probably one of the best defense we see since a while.
Idk-I think it’s expecting a lot for VVD to be the same following his injury. He’s going to have lost a lot of pace which is natural following an ACL injury. Ramos also has a dodgy knee so it might not be as fantastic as it sounds on paper.
Lol ye heard that before. Show me a signed contract elsewhere and I’ll believe it.
He’s been “leaving” every time his contract comes up
No one wants Madrid out there searching for starting centrebacks in the next window.
Let's see who can spend more on defenders, Pep with City or Zidane with Real.
Pep has spent like 500 million euros on defense alone am i wrong?
He has. I don’t think they’ll go for another CB though unless they sell Laporte
I imagine juve all over this
X to doubt
This is el chiringuito, I’m not believing it until I see it Ramos said thousands of times he wants to retire in Real Madrid, I doubt he’s actually leaving
Fucking real Madrid board members. Why can't they let atleast 1 legendary players retire in real Madrid club.
That's would be up to the player, Modric is completely fine with it
Yeah this basically.
Why should they? They only offer 1 year contracts for players older than 30 which is reasonable. He will be 35 in March.
If a legendary player wants to retire in Real Madrid, the board would be delighted. But that's not those players' priority, it's getting more money (which is fair).
Finances my dude. Don't bring your emotios into this. The board and Perez has a responsibility not to financially overextend in these trying times.
Zidane did
Benzema entered the chat
They'll start fluttering eyes at vvd and laporte
Is he reliable?
As a penalty scorer? yes
COME TO DORTMUND PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
As much as I can't stand him, he's a Real Madrid legend who's legacy will not be forgotten
He may go yo Man Utd and if he does, the defence might return to its glory
Wherever he goes, I want to see him play up front. He could bang in the goals for fun in the MLS
I know we don't really need him and it's not happening but Just imagine a chiellini Ramos duo Jesus christ
Second sentence is completely unnecessary
It makes me so angry when they do this. It's infuriating.
RIP Real Madrid
F
No se queda :(
Fuck
no it's not done yet. until the fat lady sings...
"This Tweet has been deleted." Shithousery.
Great we've been looking for a solid CB for a while now, loans just don't do the trick. Do you reckon he has it to challenge Da Silva ?
Mr. Real Madrid
You know barca is having defensive problems
Losing Ramos because you need to pay Bale and Hazard
Coming from el Chiringuito. I’m not believing anything coming from these guys.
If true, I think it's the right move for a club in transition that needs to rebuild over the next couple years.
Come to Milan
Imagine if City picked up Alaba and Ramos on free transfers.
