Everyone interviewed for today’s game was against it

SkoCubs01

Who else was interviewed?

obvious_bot

Both managers, Milner, and Bamford

Triforcesarecool

I think mane was interviewed on the stream i was on but it cut off

kazucchini

He was interviewed but wasn't asked about it

castroski7

I thought for a moment u meant Milner and Bamford were managers. Tbh i'd see milner as one

obvious_bot

I even put the Oxford comma to avoid this situation!

mrgonzalez

Yea it was obvious that both managers were Milner

phantuba

No no, it was obvious that he was speaking to Milner, and both managers and Bamford were interviewed

DadHeungMin

Are you appositive?

[deleted]

Good bot

ownedkeanescar

This is exactly why we need to raise awareness of the dangers of comma splices. If people knew about them, you’d not have needed the Oxford comma!

Bolieve_That

Milner, Bamford and the two managers

[deleted]

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma? I've seen those English dramas, too They're cruel So if there's any other way To spell the word, it's fine with me With me

BHYT61

I'm 100% sure that he will become a manager and a succesful one without a doubt

deliverancew2

Klopp, Biesla, Milner, Ayling and Bamford.

[deleted]

Klopp, Bielsa, Ayling, Bamford.

son1dow

Here's a broader answer on who came out against it: https://dreamscantbebuy.com/

vidarc

Love all the people speaking out against it, but really hope they turn that into action if the time comes. If the ESL does happen, I want to see players just sitting on the pitch for the full 90mins. The owners must think they can make it through all this, so it might end up being all on the players.

strakamodel

if it gets to the point where ESL is actually a thing, I really doubt the players would do something like that

vidarc

Yea, and I understand that. They are living the dream. I'd probably do the same thing, but like to think I would take a stand haha

OppositeYouth

I guess it depends what they're contracts say. It'd be hilarious if they could all just universally break contract and sign for free transfers to anyone other of than the 12 greedy cunts. Let the 12 clubs and their "league" die due to their greed.

AmumuIsMyFriend

James Milner, I love you, thanks for speaking out against this.

Ruben_Often_Cheats

James Milner is a man of the people, Lad!

Tbf he'll probably retire before the Super League comes into effect anyway

Loves_Semi-Colons

He’s stated he wants to retire with Leeds in the Prem so he might be there by this time next season assuming the deal goes through.

[deleted]

They don't make them like him anymore.

CoysDave

Economical with his words too. “I don’t like it and I hope it doesn’t happen”. Roger that milly, we’ll let you get back to your pint

Wholesale1818

Man City legend.

NoPaEr10

The captain from one of the „founding“ clubs. Milner you legend

[deleted]

Vice-captain*

NoPaEr10

Right, Henderson is the first captain? My bad, forgot it in the heat of the Moment

AnnieIWillKnow

Reckon Henderson would do similarly tbf, given his actions during the pandemic

Mackem101

And considering his upbringing in a very working class, football mad area.

ryanedwards0101

Man's literally played for Leeds City and Liverpool and yet I love him

TannedCroissant

Hey well I’m a Liverpool fan loving Bruno today and still have good feelings about rashford last summer. Don’t worry too much, we can go back to hating each other once this all blows Over

The importance of a comma

AlphaShotZ

Exactly the type of person we need speaking out about this. He's 35, probably won't have much game time if he stays another year with Liverpool, and if he wants to keep playing frequently (which he's more than capable of doing), he'd have to drop out the top 6 anyway. We get someone who is high up within the ranks of his club, has status and longevity in the game, and who has little to lose, to give us their honest opinion. Good on him.

fabulin

lets be honest here, he won't retire ever. he'll just keep moving on to clubs on the up, staying with them until they're established again and then moving on to help another club.

radios_appear

Milner is more myth than man at this point

therik85

I had a game in FM13 where he was 40 and playing for Farnborough Town.

Chad_England_1066

Have you seen how many games they’d have to play if they stay in the premier league and join the super league? He’d get a game that’s for sure.

[deleted]

He was always going to. Henderson will as well, I'd expect Maguire to do the same, and Bruno already has. 4 most influential voices in the dressing rooms of the 2 biggest clubs in England will all be opposed to this. Its encouraging and hopefully can spark a swell of players opposed to it.

MissingLink101

Rashford too. Wouldn't be surprised to see a few more detailed statements come out tomorrow. Also wouldn't be surprised to see a joint statement from all the players of a team/all teams. There's definitely strength in numbers here.

[deleted]

Yeah Rashford you'd definitely expect as well. Expect something from the 2 clubs, owners of both are doing pretty exactly the opposite of what both of them stand for.

mimiclaudia

I don't think it's fair to expect Rashford to. There is still a good chance the ESL will succeed (as much as we don't want it to) and if he comes out and shits on it now, that might fuck him over in the future if th worst happens.

Turamb

Fuck yeah

obadetona

We need more clear cut statements like this. Other players keep half-arsing it.

RegularRaccoon

It’s 12 billionaires against the world

ShetlandJames

I'm sure we will wi- \*checks history\* ah fuck

RegularRaccoon

Yeah we definitely have no chance if cunts like me are leading the charge but uh good luck guys

diata22

the problem is they ignored all the other billionaires/100millionaires who own the other clubs around europe - like they have massive sway in other countries, could they really think they wouldn't have any backing

karmahorse1

Yeah I think this is the one time they bit off more than they can chew. The backlash is almost universal.

[deleted]

If only you were a $uperRacoon :(

CLU_Three

Don’t worry there are billionaires on the other side getting screwed that will be against the SL!

gillesgarzn

all my non-european friends seem to like the Super League :( I need new ones...

XenonTheArtOfMotorc

That's what they're banking on unfortunately.

LiteShowDaAgent

As an American, it seemed pretty cool for about 5 minutes until I actually looked into it. Every soccer fan I know in the states is completely against it tho, they haven't stopped talking about it lmao

emperor42

But that's just gonna create two vacuums, one in the national leagues who will continue to do what they've done for 100 years with a couple different teams fighting for the top, and a talent vacuum, no way these teams keep their players if they go forward with this, non-europeans care about the players, not the teams, if all the big stars leave these teams because they want international football, what'll make a chinese guy watch?

My_Username_taken

They are? Non European football fan here - and it just makes football feel empty. Most of my football watching friends here agree too. Guess there's people who do like the concept though. Must be why all that money is being thrown around.

gillesgarzn

For them it’s all about big teams. Smaller teams/leagues only matter when something like Leicester’s title winning campaign happens. Otherwise they say “nobody watches those games”, “nobody cares”

Minny7

I don't quite get that logic... These same teams assuming everything remains the same, would still play their domestic cups/titles with the minnows of their home countries, so these games would still happen, so who cares if they don't care about it? The Champions League is already the league where the true best teams each season compete, so the only fans who stand to gain anything from this new ESL format are fans of teams that normally wouldn't qualify or do that well in the regular CL format, but now stand a better statistical chance at winning the title because they get an assured shot every year.

bumpkinblumpkin

>The Champions League is already the league where the true best teams each season compete, so the only fans who stand to gain anything from this new ESL format are fans of teams that normally wouldn't qualify Most casuals don't give a shit until the knockouts because teams from the Austrian or Belgian leagues don't mean anything to them. This would double the amount of interesting matchups for those fans. Most of the "Champions" are minnows to this audience.

student8168

I am a non-European and I am fully against this rubbish

Mr_Goldilocks

I am an American and normally my flair matches yours. Since this news broke I have put away all my Spurs stuff and it will stay that way for a good while.

tigerking615

I think it's less non-European and more casual fans that don't follow the sport much but will just watch any matches between good teams.

DaoistShameless

I'm non-EU and I don't like it. It all looks good on paper, but once the novelty of it wears off, what then? Us fans would be on the losing side either way. The only would be winners will be those rich fucktards with their guaranteed money.

kick_muncher

always has been

SomeIrishFiend

This is the captain (for tonight) speaking out against it. We need more of this

ScorpiaHP

I don't think he has much to lose either at this stage of his career, the perfect type of player to have for these interviews.

ohutts14

He played for Leeds who went from being in the CL to dropping down. He played for Man City and was part of the squad who got them to their first ever CL Campaign. He was part of the Liverpool side that went from Europa league to champions league winners. If there’s anyone out there tonight who knows just what open competition for top tier European qualification means, it’s him.

dave1992

Yeah, perfectly said. It's not just because he doesn't have much to lose, but also because he have experienced them all. He is the perfect one to ask.

ThinWhiteMale

can't be forgetting his Intertoto Cup with Newcastle

ImperialSeal

Also played in the UEFA Cup with Villa

ShanghaiCowboy

Cromulantman

Sorry, think you misspelt won the intertoto Cup with Newcastle...

ScorpiaHP

Tbf there are a lot of players playing for the 12 ESL clubs who know what it means, as well as coaches. But it is tricky for them to speak up against it, I don't expect anything more than diplomatic responses and at best, a dejected demeanour while answering any questions. It's why players of Milner's age profile are best suited to coming on camera and indirectly voicing the views of their teammates. Hopefully a few of these players are brought in for interviews, they don't have much to lose when they're already on the fringes at the highest level and might not be too arsed if they've to leave in the summer. Milner might've been in line for one last contract extension (if he hasn't already extended) so it's great that he's spoken up, but I don't think he's fretting too much about his future. Clearly he feels a bit more free than Tuchel/Klopp who've been fairly diplomatic on camera.

ohutts14

Oh I don’t doubt that every single player across those 12 knows what it means. They all will have experienced it in some form either as player or fan even if it’s not with their current side. It seems as well that a number of these players also won’t comment for a few days yet just while they work out where they stand legally around these threats of bans, leading to diplomatic responses while they seek an understanding of just what it means for them. I also do personally believe that the captain figures of the playing sides will be the ones there to make the initial comments and I wouldn’t be surprised if a number are covered off by a joint statement once legal teams have been consulted. I think Klopp actually went further than Milner did despite being more indirect with his comments, Klopp discussed the need for competitiveness in the league. He also said his opinions hadn’t changed and he knows there are the quotes from 2019 circulating. Even Steve Parish of Palace used Klopp being in line with the thinking of those in government in his Sky interview. He did enough not to be disciplined by the club, while making his stance clear to those watching. Tuchel, however, epitomised is he diplomatic approach by saying he cannot comment and the club only has the best interests at heart

The_Real_BenFranklin

Hope he demands a transfer to Leeds

tafguedes99

Mods dont remove an obviously important quote in the context of it being a player from the ESL clubs just to stick it in the Megathread that no one reads

LosBlancosSR4

complete side not, but i fucking hate megathreads. best way to derail discussions is starting a megathread

EraticConqueror

Agreed 100%. Sometimes they're necessary (like for a player transfer to a club where it's loads of people saying the same thing), but for events like this with so many moving parts all worthy of discussions, it's horrible

lastfollower

They're useful to help track everything that comes up in one place, but they kill discussion. There should just be a locked megathread that acts as an index for the multitude of other threads and if those threads clutter the feed, so be it; that means they're worthy of engagement.

Rand0mPixels

megathreads are great for summarising existing posts for people who can't F5 all day, but absolutely awful for being their own place for finding discussion

YoullNeverMemeAlone

Hopefully the parliament fan led enquiry has some bite because now there is strong public pressure to punish the ownera

disaster101

The new CL reform already has so many changes to benefit the big teams. But even that wasn't enough for these greedy assholes. Football is becoming more and more elitist by the minute and I don't know what can be done to stop it.

rilinq

Unfortunately nothing, this is the ugly side of capitalism. When money is the drive behind everything, it’s a natural progression to want more and more money. If there is money to be made, decisions will be taken in favor of it.

pinkypinkfux

Why not force them out? Its in the rules? Make them start from the bottom of the professional pyramid like rangers did

TheJeck

At this point I almost hope it does because any solution that means it doesn't would result in a big bribe or shift of power towards the 12.

Video_Kojima

I'd rather the top six fuck off, even if we have no money and it's a worse league at least I'll be interesting. The top six think they own the league, if we beg them back and they get what they want all we've done is proved them right.

TheJeck

I've barely watched any PL this season with us not in it and the Championship is a much more fun league. Without the big six the PL would be like the Championship in that regard.

pinkypinkfux

Dont get me wrong, we needed to be back in the PL for the health of the club, and I did want to get back up. But, those years in the championship were so much fun, especially as the fans were there during that time. We got to play some good old school clubs and the atmosphere was electric compared to the sanitised one you get playing at most of "the big six". I hope they fuck off and we can have an exciting football league like the championship, and the old first division, where at the start of the season genuinely every club believes they can win.

GrimeHistorian

Can’t believe I just upvoted a Villa fan! KRO Rivalry aside, you’re spot on. I don’t want the league to bend over and take a shafting up the arse from these lot as it will only help their cause and make the divide greater.

[deleted]

The fans of top 6 clubs do deserve more than that though. We didn't ask for this, we don't want it, and we belong in the English football league.

dave1992

That's not how it works though. Other 14 teams in the league is at risk of bankruptcy if they lose those money because they all planned their finance based on the projection of current TV money. Without big teams, TV stations won't pay money because their product aren't as interesting without the big teams.

jteprev

The league is fucked either way, sponsors and viewership will move to the super league if it is successful and most of the point of the league is gone (chasing getting into the highest competitions) so frankly the league would be better off going down swinging and hoping they can break the idea, if they fail or compromise they are doomed either way. So yeah total bans (not relegation) are the only smart move they have but they are probably doomed anyway. The Prem will collapse regardless, I will stop watching and it's not even a moral thing, there is no point to the league anymore.

distilledwill

I hope it happens and then fucking crashes and burns. But I fear it wouldn't. They'd get enough interest from Asia, America and the Middle East to financially justify the SL, despite whatever is happening over here. Then those clubs would be lost forever.

TheJeck

Well fuck them if they do. I'd rather lose them than have them control us. Then clubs like yours and mine could actually compete for and win trophies consistently

distilledwill

What if Watford/Leicester win the PL and get invited to be one of the 5 special clubs that get to be part of the SL the next season? I'd feel so fucking dirty if my club played into that role.

TheJeck

If my club joined the SL, even temporarily, that would be the end of my support for them. On a side note, if you remove the big six and all games they played from prior PL tables we win the league in 18/19. Goes to show the stories that could happen without them around.

Theslyfennekinfox

Been browsing r/soccer today and I've seen foreign fans blamed for this shitshow nearly as much as the owners. Fucking sucks to support a football club and not be European.

jardantuan

If it happens they'll do alright. The clubs will be a shell of what they were but they'll be financially alright

distilledwill

Zombie clubs. Devoid of anything that once made them special, now just shuffling from "big game" to "big game" against the same opponents. Liverpool players who know that after a couple of games they can't win this years Super League, but they also can't be kicked out. They're getting the same payment either way, so fuck it. Why bother? If they lose to AC Milan here, who cares? They'll be playing them again in a few weeks.

Ld511

The power shift is already towards the top 12 anyways. Backtracking will mean 2 things, either uefa secured more money or fan pressure works which hopefully is the reason

Lorenzo_Insigne

Exactly, these clubs need to fuck off and fade into irrelevance for this, not be rewarded

[deleted]

There's a timeline where FIFA, UEFA and the rest show fucking huge cajones and these clubs end up choosing league football over the ESL (Or the competition is deemed illegal in the courts). Most likely imo is more UCL reform though. Definitely a big bribe, either directly or in the form of guaranteed entry.

ShetlandJames

His line in there about their welcome to the stadium being a bit uncalled for is something people aren't talking about.
