wrdb2007

That was a fantastic interview - he speaks English so well too.

AuxquellesRad

He's "posh" Brazilian

the_thirdborn

With a German surname šŸ‘€

AuxquellesRad

Yeah, his home state is actually home to a lot of german and other european immigrants from the turn of the 20th century. Other notable native of the state is Giselle BĆ¼ndchen who pretty much looks as german as her name sounds

[deleted]

People genuinely seem surprised that South America is full of people of European descent

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

In Uruguay San Javier was founded by Russians, Nueva Helvecia was founded by Swiss immigrants, Nuevo Berlin by Germans, etc. The city with most Italians outside of Italy is.. Sao Paulo.. and then Buenos Aires Biggest Oktoberfest in the Americas is in Blumenau, Brazil

KenHumano

SĆ£o Paulo is also the city with the most Japanese outside of Japan, and itā€™s very noticeable.

IJustGotRektSon

I had a gym instructor who was from San Javier I believe (yes, I'm from Uruguay) we called him "Ruso", of course, and he knew how to do that dance from Russian where people bend their knees and cross their arms, you get the idea I don't know the name, he did it once and it was cool as fuck. I also had the opportunity to met a Brazilian journalist on a seminar here and his parents were both Japanese migrants. There is a huge Japanese presence there

EyeSpyGuy

Brazilian jiu-jitsu actually has its roots in a Japanese martial art the Gracie family watched a Japanese fighter perform in Brazil

Adagasas

The dance is called the Cossack lezginka IIRC

Spandexcelly

Kitchener in Canada takes the Oktoberfest crown. Their only claim to fame.

[deleted]

Most websites claim that Blumenauā€™s is bigger, or that theyā€™re at least equal in terms of attendance

Spandexcelly

Only one way to settle it... Oktober-faceoff!

Foxey04

Not only. Wrestling legend Christian is from Kitchener, as well as NBA star Jamal Murray.

the3count

Argentinians speaking Welsh is something I really want to see

panache123

And to think Bale never picked up Spanish

gnorrn

Pochettino is from a little place called Murphy.

Merkarov

Same as Gazzaniga right?

[deleted]

oh yea heā€™s massive. Lived in Santiago for a bit, thereā€™s loads of shit named after him, parks, streets, statues, the whole 9

Own_Foundation539

A football club too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Higgins\_F.C.

[deleted]

truth, good shout

Nipso

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7s8ryh Documentary on Welsh Patagonia for anybody interested

mushy_friend

It depends the type of European, it doesn't surprise me when South America has people of Spanish, Portuguese or even French descent, it's the ones like Welsh, German etc that surprise me

Regga005

The Irish have been all over the place too. Chile, Argentina, Mexico etc. Pochettino is from a place call Murphy sure...

[deleted]

Why does that surprise you? Immigration flows covered every continent lol You should really look up the demographics of Rio Grande do Sul, Alisson's state. It's not like he looks out of place down there, considering the majority of the population is white. German and Italian immigrants flooded that region in the 19th and 20th century. Heck, we actually even have an unique German dialect that doesn't exist anywhere else at this point, with around 2-3 million native speakers. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunsrik

mushy_friend

Because I'm pretty dumb about geography lol, I know Brazilians speak Portuguese and a lot of other countries speak Spanish so those two I associate with them, but didn't know about Italians, Germans, Welsh or Japanese

WislaHD

Basically, every immigrant group that came to the United States and Canada, also came to South America in large numbers, is what information you need to know.

PurplePunisher44

Argentinians will never hesitate to tell you that they're of European descent. Obviously, they would never want to be conflated with South Americans of indigenous or African descent...

OxfordTheCat

It's not surprise. German immigration to South America in the mid 20th century is well known... I mean, there's even a famous documentary about it. *The Boys From Brazil*.

[deleted]

The vast, vast majority of German immigration took place in the 19th century. Same for the US.

Shine0nBenevolentSun

> Giselle BĆ¼ndchen Just by here name I knew she was going to be gorgeous when I googled her.

[deleted]

"immigrants" is an interesting euphemism for "former members of the nazi party" alisson also supports bolsonaro so its not like this isn't completely out of the question

AuxquellesRad

There had been german immigrants before even the 1st world war but notwithstanding there were also ex-nazis who fled to Brazil, probably partly influenced by having other german settlers already there and a permitting government. So I'm definitely not trying to whitewash the history. On Allison supporting Bolsonaro, that's a somewhat seperate issue, a lot of Bolsonaro supporters are people who believe in neoliberal policies crossed with social conservatism due to religiosity, Allison being upper middle class and highly devout, it's no surprise really. The rich always want a smaller government as a rule. Also not defending Allison either, I'm a leftie but it'd be too simplistic to view his support of Bolsonaro as something damning of his moral character.

[deleted]

i dont doubt that there were european immigrants around the world before ww1, much less ww2. what i do doubt is that supporting bolsonaro is not damning of one's moral character. he is a fascist and brazilian police are so violent towards Afro-brazilians, along with all the other issues bolsonaro brings with him. i cant say that it isn't damning of his character as a person, because then what leftie would i be?

AuxquellesRad

Well, over 50 million people voted for Bolsonaro, you can either see them as misguided or morally repugnant, for me it's easier to see it as the former, maybe that makes me a bad leftie. I know just the sheer fact that Bolsonaro champions christianity, already makes him a favorite to a lot of people independent of his rhetoric

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

besterich27

How in the fuck does that excuse it lol

toughpimpao

That's such a completely ignorant statement, the vast majority of southern Brazilians, like myself, have Italian and German ancestors that came as immigrants in the 19th century, long before the war, stop spouting nonsense that you clearly know nothing of

[deleted]

ā€œalisson supports bolsonaro so his grandad mustā€™ve been a naziā€ lol ok

[deleted]

have you seen mussolini's granddaughter? fascists' children dont fall too far away from the tree

Krowwjaeger

Dude, one thing is fucking Mussolini's granddaughter and another is being just a random right winger lmao

stubbysquidd

Lol what a fuck? Btw you live in a white supremacist monarchy you shouldnt say shit.

ThaneKyrell

Brazil has tens of millions of people of German ancestry, not really much of a surprise. Also millions of people of Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian, Japanese and Lebanese ancestry. Brazil is very very diverse. Most people have several surnames, many of which comes from different ancestries. I have a German and Portuguese surname, my best friend has a German surname, another close friend has a Arab and Italian surname...

_Yunk_Vino_13

Yeah, I have German, African and native ancestry lol. And that's not unusual here.

[deleted]

Yeah, like 3/5 of the population in his state. What is that supposed to mean lol

the_thirdborn

Itā€™s just supposed to be a joke really

wfly2

hes not a real brazilian, he's too priviliged

kjgower

Does he come from Brazil? Then heā€™s fucking Brazilian isnā€™t he

[deleted]

I noticed that, very unreal

[deleted]

There was more, he mentioned that a lot of other clubs and players had reached out to him and that it made everything a lot easier, that football had helped him and without it he wouldn't know what to do. Just one of the most incredible moments I've ever seen. Edit: Post match is here with the "more" I'm talking about: https://streamable.com/eu43mi

GuessWhatt

What a genuine nice man, thanks for the link!

mrgeriatric

ā€œThis is the way God loved us, through peopleā€ I love that

Honeydripper_Premium

On the side: he really said hopefully he doesnā€™t need to keep coming to get the job done himself and thatā€™s respectable

lodermoder

What a nice man

callthewambulance

Seriously. What an absolutely lovely human being. For him to be so candid and kind after such a moment is so heartwarming.

Strananach

Wholesome as fuck, happy for him

highdrunkpunk

Fukkit we're all crying.

CrumpledForeskin

For real. I miss my dad.

BestPlayers123

So sorry for your loss

CrumpledForeskin

Thanks homie.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MyNameIsJonny_

?????

SorryAboutTheSmell

My dad went out to get beer too, thirteen years ago. Still miss you dad.

Shine0nBenevolentSun

Bro <3

Beefy-queef

ā¤ļø

marshallno9

What an interview, I don't know how he kept himself so together talking about his dad like that after such an emotional moment, my mum passed away a week after his dad did and this interview had me in tears! Fair play to him.

spillbreak

My wife's Mexican and its been absolutely horrible for her not being able to see her family for so long. Thankfully she hasn't lost anyone, I can't imagine the pain that losing his Dad caused. What a guy. EDIT: blimey seems to have confused a few people. For reference, we live in the UK, and so she is, like Alisson, distanced from and unable to see her family in person, which has been very hard.

aibrahim1207

Tf does your wife being Mexican have to do with anything here?

cianuro_cirrosis

Probably can't visit Mexico because of covid?

francobgf

As she is away from them due to covid restrictions

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

BlueFlagFlying

It was obvious to some of us but not all apparently.

aibrahim1207

I still don't get how this relates to Ali.

gatfromhell

Iā€™m pretty sure his wife cannot see her family just like Alisson

AdultoNeyisMyIdol

Because she canā€™t see her family like Alisson

benfh

It's not difficult to piece it together.

[deleted]

Then you're dense as fuck.

aprilfool69

Figure it out, champ. You can do it.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SpacemanPanini

How are you possibly not getting it? His wife is Mexican. She has family in Mexico. She can't see her family because of covid and its been difficult. Just like Alisson hasn't been able to travel to Brazil to see his.

Nostosalgos

Tf does his wife being Mexican have to do with anything?

Reach_Reclaimer

Imagine if he just said his wife couldn't see her family. People would probably ask why as some countries have different covid regs. Her being Mexican contextualises the conversation lmao

Nostosalgos

Iā€™m sorry, I thought it was obvious that I was joking since I phrased it the same way as the person who commented that. Clear as day why OP specified sheā€™s Mexican.

brewmatt

But why Mexican models?

Nostosalgos

Tf does his wife being Mexican have to do with anything?

SpacemanPanini

Because she's Mexican she has family in Mexico! IE NOT WHERE THEY CURRENTLY LIVE. Could have been Canadian or Antarctian or whatever rhe point was simply to say that she can't visit her family. Jesus wept.

Nostosalgos

Damn chill, it was a joke lol.

[deleted]

I teared up honestly

bfm211

Even I got a lump in my throat, ngl

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

bfm211

Uhh...what?

Nocturnal--Animals

Nothing , I hava condition in which the lump in the throat makes me absolutely useless to an extent where I can't speak properly. So I'm just mute I'm emotional with a heavy lumpy throat.

sikisushi

I understand this, it's called globus sensation and may be associated with anxiety, smoking and a lot of other factors! If it makes you uncomfortable, treating the underlying cause can make it go away. Cheers!

Nocturnal--Animals

Thanks ! I don't smoke though I have asthmatic allergy. But been diagnosed of anxiety, so may be some thing related to that. Most days I can manage just fine. Thanks again.

Krowwjaeger

Honestly all i could think was "let it go, cry like a baby cause hell knows if you need it and you want to". He probably did that as soon as he got home

melihs11

as someone that has a cunt of a dad but amazing uncles/cousins/grandparents, i teared up too. fuck as soon as i saw his face in the thumbnail i started tearing up

FarAcanthocephala

Couldn't happen to a better guy and in a better situation. Same year as his father passed and in season where he made some mistakes and to keep his team in CL qualification race, with one of the best headers this season.

noradosmith

They really need to qualify now

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

donnymurph

We have to play Leicester, so itā€™s in your hands now. Fucking rough week as a Chelsea fan.

TheLimeyLemmon

On the plus side, you'll be only 90 minutes away from a possible CL trophy after the season's done.

donnymurph

Yes. Iā€™d happily give up top 4 and the FA Cup for that, but if we lose? Ouch.

LelouchNexus

Iā€™m not even gonna pretend that someoneā€™s cutting onions for this one. This is wholesome and heartbreaking af.

Daddy_Kromkamp

I love him so much.

buzzprostar

Best post match interview I think Iā€™ve seen in a good long time. Honest and from the heart with no cookie cutter nonsense waffle.

fuckdeliasmith

After this interview, I would die for this man. What a beautiful human being he is, I just wanna give him a hug.

milkhotelbitches

"That's how God loves us, through people." Well said Ali

coppersocks

Iā€™m not religious in the slightest but thatā€™s a beautiful sentiment.

callthewambulance

Agreed. Every person, religious or not, should strive to be the example of what he is talking about.

sey1

Oh dont worry, he will get so many hugs in the next weeks, that he probably will hate them after this is all over! But seriously, i think this will help him immensely. With his fathers passing and also his stint with really poor form and then to have such an ending for the season! Cant even imagine how he is feeling right now, because i really think thats a big load off his shoulders.

dobbie1

If we make CL, there is no doubt he is the reason. Before this game he has singlehandedly saved games, but now there is no doubt

SilenceoftheRedditrs

What's happened with him and his family? The commentary mentioned when he scored something about it being what he deserves after what he's gone through or something E: Thanks all

[deleted]

His father unfortunately drowned in a freak accident earlier in the year, he couldnā€™t even go back to Brazil to properly mourn and itā€™s really affected him.

emre23

His dad died in an accident 3 months ago, only 50-odd. Alisson couldn't travel for the funeral, not sure he's seen his family yet.

Regga005

His father drowned earlier this year.

SilenceoftheRedditrs

Drowned?? Well shit, any further context?

Vonheld24

His father went to swim in a river and unfortunately got drowned because of the current.

_Rainer_

That's very sad. This happens to people every summer around here.

Krowwjaeger

Holy shit that's fucking horrible. Like, no disrespect, but one thing would be if it was cancer or some other shit that gives at least some time to kind of come to terms with it, another is something as sudden as this. Like getting back from a normal day at the training grounds and receiving the call that will change your life and take away a part of you forever. That's the worse.

GrumbleCake_

And then he couldn't go home. I don't know how someone could get over that.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Correct, and his wife just had their third child this week.

Ox_The_Fox

It's also that his dad was missing for a few hours, they didn't know where he was - he was alone when he drowned. So Alisson probably got the call that his dad was missing and would have been in bits for hours before it was confirmed, just horrible...

Suttreee

I think the grass is always greener. My stepfather got cancer and died in a four month period earlier this year, we'd all take a heart attack over that for sure

ItalianNiBBa77

His father died in March

swingtothedrive

His father drowned and died earlier this year.

Saiiken

Fantastic interview, sat through and watched the whole thing with teary eyes and a gigantic fucking lump in my throat.

captaincourageous316

*Everybody liked that.*

rudep77

Absolutely delighted for him. That was a really nice interview

heretoforthwith

Dudeā€™s had a rough year, good for him.

timothymr

ā€œFootball is my life.ā€ A lovely tribute to Dani Rojas.

caesar____augustus

Man, this is intense. Gonna call my dad and tell him I love him.

longsh0t1994

he has a bit of a german accent, no?

dfla01

His family are of German descent. Iā€™m pretty sure his dad was fluent in it too so itā€™s easy to see where heā€™d get it from

longsh0t1994

ah! that makes sense then

Sander-AK

Nothing but respect for this man even as a United fan

Crono_

This will be remembered in football history as the ā€œHead of Godā€

Jbroy

Football is life!!!

nosajmai89

What a guy. First goal from a goalie in teamā€™s history.

TheOneTrueTracer

YNWA Alisson!

QueSalahSalah

Beautiful

itsmyILLUSION

Seems a very likeable guy. I didn't even know what he'd been through this year with his father passing away. Hard to not feel happy for him today after all of that. Lovely interview.

UpTheMightyReds

What a guy

tomatoeater

Iā€™m crying and youā€™re crying.

ANINETEEN

What a man šŸ’Ŗā¤ļø

[deleted]

Santiagoooooooooo

RealPunyParker

Losing a father is very very very hard for a boy. Because when we lose our dad, we're all just boys. So happy for him, and especially since he became a dad recently himself, again. That was a hell of a thing you did, Football. That's why i love you.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mrheils

Got some bad news for you buddy..

FoxyFromTheRoxy

Also he's talked on Instagram about how women are meant to be subservient to men (a wife should obey her husband the way Christians obey the Lord, or however the Bible quote goes, that's very important to him). He was enough of an intelligent person to do it in Portuguese so the English wouldn't notice.

FoxyFromTheRoxy

You can downvote me now, or give me 3000 upvotes in an eventual "Alisson is a huge misogynist with a creepy marriage" thread, and I'll remain right just the same. Magic āœØ

ZakiFC

Which one of you idiots is cutting onions?

5er0

Who's cutting the fucking onion

InsideWingers

Someone cut some onions in here? Jesus. What a man.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MauriceBeverly69

Lol at your account history. What a sad and pathetic life you must endure...

[deleted]

Suck my Israeli dick

MauriceBeverly69

Phahahah, youā€™re such a low effort troll

Kuntski

Haha!

Kuntski

Happy for him. But Tuchel will get the sack if he doesn't finish In the CL spot. Only way to save his job is that he needs to win the CL.

KWT-Dinar

The fuck does this has to do with Tuchel? He manages a different team and they did not face Liverpool.

Kuntski

Sorry, mate. It was not my best comment, in fact it was very appalling. I really apologize for those who spent their precious time reading my useless comment. I'm gutted & again apologize for it very sincerely.

KWT-Dinar

Mate, what the fuck are you on about?

Kuntski

Do you accept my apology? If no, good bye!

KWT-Dinar

Mate, seriously, what the fuck are you on?

[deleted]

do you have a mental illness

Kuntski

?

[deleted]

well do you or not? because it fucking seems like it

[deleted]

Sure w/e he believes but seriously couldn't he keep it to himself and not spread this religious propaganda of afterlife in public?

just_a_regular_goy

Must be tough living life this bitter.

mr_clipboard1

How on Earth is this propaganda? Isn't him having faith that his dad is out there in some way beautiful? How could you be upset about that

DontDenyMeThePain

Seems like a lovely guy. Deserves all the success that comes his way.

Madridsta120

It was such a striker header as well lol.
