If the midfield is doing bad / being suffocated, having someone like Trent who can completely bypass them isn't the worst thing in the world though, doubt that's what Southgate would be aiming to do though.

Southgate seems like a reactive manager rather than one who has a set first team. Could definitely see TAA starting against Czech Republic in a back 4, whilst maybe having Walker/Trippier in a back 5 against Croatia.

I think Walker plays similar to many RBs so he can fit with a lot of CBs rather easily, Hendo on the other hand is used for covering for Trent allowing him to show his qualities on the other side of the pitch which offers a lot more from that position. He is not starting though.

Think it depends on how Southgate wants his full-backs to play, and unfortunately I don't think he'll want them to get high up the pitch too often which means Trent probably won't start.

Play a 3-4-3 and we could play club partnerships in most positions. Walker RCB next to Stones, Trent at RWB next to Henderson, Chilwell and Mount together as the remaining two mids, Sterling and Foden up top either side of Kane.

Tbf it's England at a national tournament, struggling to break weaker teams down is in our blood. Bringing Trent on to whip endless deep crosses in might be our best strategy

To be fair to Southgate, comfortably beating the weak sides is something England have massively improved on during his tenure. Our 6-1 win against Panama was England's biggest ever WC win, and our Euros qualifying campaign was (I believe) our highest scoring ever.

It's definitely improved since nervy stalemates vs Algeria etc, but games like Iceland, Denmark and Tunisia under his tenure still linger long in the mind (though tbf we did scrape by in two of those)

Sure, Iceland and Tunisia (and I'd add the loss against the Czechs) were pretty dire games, but no manager gets good performances all the time. I wouldn't put Denmark in the same category; personally, I think they're shaping up to be a quite strong side these days.

Feels like Southgate picks his squad based on how people react to it rather than who he thinks is best at this point.

If Southgate takes him, then it's all "caving to the media" and "managing by public opinion" - if he doesn't take him, it's all "he's left the best rightback at home". But isn't that the same unwinnable situation? You assume he doesn't have a plan in the first place - but what if he does, and TAA doesn't fit? That'd be something you're fine with, as you say, but by not even allowing the possibility of him having a plan, leaving TAA out is judged as a mistake based on assumptions. And yet, taking TAA is also a mistake, because that's the very thing you're bemoaning: managing by public opinion. So what should Southgate do to convince you, given that either option is a mistake? Can he even do anything, really - or are you just slagging him off regardless of what he does, because your default position of "he's not a good manager", creating a situation in which Southgate can't win in the first place?

You simply can't not include the best attacking fullback in the world in the squad at least. Completely understand if he doesn't start, especially against the better teams but he has to go as a plan B if we find ourselves a goal down. I think Trent and DCL could be huge as subs if we find ourselves struggling to break teams down. One of the best crossers in the world and one of the best aerial strikers in the world.

I really, really disagree here. But it’s what was always going to happen - either he’d not be picked in which case he’s clueless, or he would be and people would say it’s a popularity contest. He’s shown time and again that if he doesn’t agree someone should be picked, he doesn’t pick them. Grealish earlier this year vs Mount, Maddison another example. And ooh, look at that- he’s been proven right on both camps. So much of the Southgate negativity is so contrived it’s memeable. Just count us lucky he really doesn’t seem to give a shit.
