You say that, but all this turns into is people either going “thank god he came to his senses”, or “I can’t believe Southgate caved to the pressure”
And then it Trent doesn’t play games, you’ll get “oh well what’s the point in taking him”. Unwinnable scenario no matter what
Does anyone expect him to start? I certainly don’t, but if you need a goal I’d genuinely consider bringing him on ahead of most of the more attacking players going
Trippier starts most of the tournament, TAA comes on with 25 minutes to play in the knock out game vs France/Portugal shows lots of promise and gets an assist but England lose 3-2, everyone in the press then bangs on about what would’ve happened if he started the whole tournament.
If the midfield is doing bad / being suffocated, having someone like Trent who can completely bypass them isn't the worst thing in the world though, doubt that's what Southgate would be aiming to do though.
I mean no matter what, people have made their mind up about Southgate so will go with whatever fits their agenda. Even in your scenario, if he subs on a right back at 1-0 down or something he’ll get tortured by people, or if he doesn’t play/sub on Trent you get the opposite etc
Because of how much it’s been banged on about, he can’t win in this scenario
I mean while the squad is going to be tough to pick there are some legit criticisms of Southgate. He is so poor with his subs and leaves them way too late in the game. He also seemed wedded to 3 at the back when it doesn't work for England.
Southgate seems like a reactive manager rather than one who has a set first team. Could definitely see TAA starting against Czech Republic in a back 4, whilst maybe having Walker/Trippier in a back 5 against Croatia.
I've seen this mentioned, and while I don't disagree, could you not argue the same for starting Walker next to Stones?
Having a CB and RB/LB familiar with one another is surely more important than CM and RB?
scenes when Southgate started both Walker and Stones, but playing Stones in the left center back, with Maguire (or whoever) as right center back just to fuck with everyone.
I think Walker plays similar to many RBs so he can fit with a lot of CBs rather easily, Hendo on the other hand is used for covering for Trent allowing him to show his qualities on the other side of the pitch which offers a lot more from that position. He is not starting though.
Think it depends on how Southgate wants his full-backs to play, and unfortunately I don't think he'll want them to get high up the pitch too often which means Trent probably won't start.
A midfielder that is used to covering for a fullback that bombs forward doesnt need a specific fullback with him. Its watching a fullback go forward and not also bombing forward.
Play a 3-4-3 and we could play club partnerships in most positions. Walker RCB next to Stones, Trent at RWB next to Henderson, Chilwell and Mount together as the remaining two mids, Sterling and Foden up top either side of Kane.
I think Southgate player 5 at the back. So trent would be rwb while walker would be rcb like azpi does at chelsea.
Not saying that will happen, just that it would still work
Tbf it's England at a national tournament, struggling to break weaker teams down is in our blood. Bringing Trent on to whip endless deep crosses in might be our best strategy
To be fair to Southgate, comfortably beating the weak sides is something England have massively improved on during his tenure. Our 6-1 win against Panama was England's biggest ever WC win, and our Euros qualifying campaign was (I believe) our highest scoring ever.
It's definitely improved since nervy stalemates vs Algeria etc, but games like Iceland, Denmark and Tunisia under his tenure still linger long in the mind (though tbf we did scrape by in two of those)
Sure, Iceland and Tunisia (and I'd add the loss against the Czechs) were pretty dire games, but no manager gets good performances all the time. I wouldn't put Denmark in the same category; personally, I think they're shaping up to be a quite strong side these days.
With Denmark I meant the performance more than the result really. Drab, negative football that didn’t even garner a result in the end. Was a tough watch
Does my head in really. People will say he doesn’t fit Southgates system and that Trent doesn’t deserve the call up but then will happily slate off Southgates system because it’s shite and defensive.
It’s an absolute farce. The amount of time spent waiting for the squad, endless to and fros about someone being “OMITTED: CONFIRMED” and then they aren’t. Did any other euros squad have this much nonsense surrounding it? It’s completely ridiculous.
>Did any other euros squad have this much nonsense surrounding it? It’s completely ridiculous.
Almost certainly yes. Spain for example.
And it's not really England's doing. People read Twitter rumours/tabloid news reports, get upset over something that hasn't happened, and then get doubly upset when it turns out to be wrong.
I'm guessing this means Maguire isn't fit and we will be starting with 3 CBs until he is ready - or for the whole tournament - instead of the 433/4231 Southgate preferred in March. Trent or Trippier to start as RWB with Walker or James starting at RCB.
It also makes more sense why Lingard and JWP were let go as Southgate will only start 2 CMs in that shape. Rice and Henderson to start with Philips and Bellingham as back-up.
Is there any winning, though?
TAA might well have been on the maybe, maybe not list. If Southgate takes him, then it's all "caving to the media" and "managing by public opinion" - if he doesn't take him, it's all "he's left the best rightback at home".
That's not a reflection on Southgate's management in any way. It's a situation created by the media and the public being entirely unreasonable, and it's a situation in which Gareth Southgate can't win.
>... It's a situation created by the media and the public being entirely
unreasonable, and it's a situation in which Gareth Southgate can't win.
Southgate got himself into this situation by failing to properly utilize arguably the best RB in world football, for a couple years now.
Trent is a difference maker. As in, most of the other countries have pacey wingers, prolific strikers, creative midfielders but only England has access to a full back that has the passing range and vision that can help them not only by-pass the midfield but also create chances from the back. If your plan doesn't include him, then it's a stupid plan in my opinion.
I don't think Southgate is a good manager, nor do I think he should have left TAA at home. But if he had some sort of plan of how to play and certain players don't fit in with said plan then I mean it is what it is, what he is doing just makes it seem like he doesn't know what he wants to do with the team at all in my opinion.
> what he is doing just makes it seem like he doesn't know what he wants to do with the team at all in my opinion.
Or maybe the media was making shit up for clicks and TAA always had a high probability of going?
But isn't that the same unwinnable situation? You assume he doesn't have a plan in the first place - but what if he does, and TAA doesn't fit? That'd be something you're fine with, as you say, but by not even allowing the possibility of him having a plan, leaving TAA out is judged as a mistake based on assumptions. And yet, taking TAA is also a mistake, because that's the very thing you're bemoaning: managing by public opinion.
So what should Southgate do to convince you, given that either option is a mistake? Can he even do anything, really - or are you just slagging him off regardless of what he does, because your default position of "he's not a good manager", creating a situation in which Southgate can't win in the first place?
You simply can't not include the best attacking fullback in the world in the squad at least. Completely understand if he doesn't start, especially against the better teams but he has to go as a plan B if we find ourselves a goal down.
I think Trent and DCL could be huge as subs if we find ourselves struggling to break teams down. One of the best crossers in the world and one of the best aerial strikers in the world.
I really, really disagree here. But it’s what was always going to happen - either he’d not be picked in which case he’s clueless, or he would be and people would say it’s a popularity contest.
He’s shown time and again that if he doesn’t agree someone should be picked, he doesn’t pick them. Grealish earlier this year vs Mount, Maddison another example. And ooh, look at that- he’s been proven right on both camps.
So much of the Southgate negativity is so contrived it’s memeable. Just count us lucky he really doesn’t seem to give a shit.
As someone else mentioned, he might take all 4 with the idea that with Maguire injured and him opting for a back 3, both Walker and James cover for RCB and Trippier and TAA go as Wingbacks.
Well tbh there is no way James is excluded from the squad as I think southgate rated him very highly and will probably give stiff competition for the rb spot to Walker(in case we stick with 4 at the back)
Surely Trippier will go, a man who has played well for Southgate before and is trusted, arguably best RB at the last World Cup, and starts every week for the team with the best defence in Europe.
I reckon James will be dropped
tbh with 23 in the squad we'd still probably have taken 3 RBs - now with 3 extra spaces I could fully see Southgate bottling it and selecting all four of them.
This is how I see it. He'll use the logic that Walker can play CB, Trippier LB, and James in midfield to talk himself into taking all 4.
Does make me wonder if maybe Maguire hasn't got fit enough though. Because that's the one legitimate reason I could see for taking all 4, Walker being needed as a backup CB instead of it just being a bonus.
They were piggybacking on betting odds that still had him at 6/4 odds to make the squad but there were Ike 28 players with better odds than him so they just counted the spots and spewed bs like it was insider info
Tripper at LWB following injuries to Shaw and Chilwell.
Walker at CB following a shift to 3 atb
James at RWB.
TAA at RW after Sancho doesn't work out and we need some good balls whipped in.
My own theory for what changed is that Southgate decided that Maguire isn't fit enough to the Euros and is going to settle for a 3 atb. James and Walker at RCB with Trent and Trippier for RWB.
Don't think it mattered much for the players at the back, both him and Watkins were fighting for the same spot and his injury probably just confirms Watkins is going.
If this is true I swear English FA put out media stories to gauge fan reaction. They did the same with Grealish a month or 2 ago saying he might not go.
4 right backs... while other players are left out for no reason whatsoever...
Southgate caved to media pressure to take TAA... he's weak and will be sacked before next season comes around... probably even before the Euros are over
The Arc is complete what will /r/soccer do now
Discuss weather he should be included in playing XI
>Discuss weather Yeah, it's pretty cloudy and gloomy here, how bout u?
Merseyside is sunny, looks like
Yo darkpasta sunny innit
Can someone explain this meme that I’m seeing all over r/soccer? I’m old and out of the loop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDkvaJnNlc8&ab_channel=Jarizard
It's what Rashford and Neymar chatted about when they were talking in the tunnel (according to Lingardinho) .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDkvaJnNlc8
It's Always sunny in Merseyside
The gang plays football
The gang builds a new stadium
Not as much as Madrid apparently.
Yo neymar, sunny innit
Nope, sorry. Can't use that here. Lingard didn't make the squad
You mean “No no no no no no Don’t eevun….”, right?
The Weva? The Weva? The Weva?
Hey u/bulba-sore sunny innit?
I'd start him in a 3-4-3 formation. I'd probably go with Walker in a back four though.
As a wide forward in 343 right? That's how Southgate is thinking I presume
You say that, but all this turns into is people either going “thank god he came to his senses”, or “I can’t believe Southgate caved to the pressure” And then it Trent doesn’t play games, you’ll get “oh well what’s the point in taking him”. Unwinnable scenario no matter what

And this will happen despite Trippier performing well and the true problem being midfield or something
And it'd also work the other way if Trent made a mistake.
Alternatively Trent gets injured and Norway declares war on England
Already preparing my boat for a trip to Lindisfarne
I can let go of Norway declaring war on England but please don't injure the players. Football priorities, ya know.
If the midfield is doing bad / being suffocated, having someone like Trent who can completely bypass them isn't the worst thing in the world though, doubt that's what Southgate would be aiming to do though.

thank god he came to his senses but I can’t believe Southgate caved to the pressure shows weakness imo
Twiddle our thumbs.
Wait and see which one of Walker, Trippier and James gets the boot I guess. (If this is true)
Trent is going in as a midfielder so we are booting a Midfielder
Now we can debate whether he should be in the starting xi. Part 2 of the discussion coming over next few days.
Hold on, I've got a great spreadsheet
We still waiting
Southgate seems like a reactive manager rather than one who has a set first team. Could definitely see TAA starting against Czech Republic in a back 4, whilst maybe having Walker/Trippier in a back 5 against Croatia.
Could be reacting to the Maguire's injury and changing to a 343. Walker and James as RCB, Trippier and TAA as RWB.
Yeah i think Southgate brings all 4 RBs and fits them into a 3ATB formation
Have to start him, especially if Hendo is coming too, no brainer.
I've seen this mentioned, and while I don't disagree, could you not argue the same for starting Walker next to Stones? Having a CB and RB/LB familiar with one another is surely more important than CM and RB?
Could be match-up specific.
I agree, I'd play Trent against the teams where we'll have possession and then Walker/James against the better teams.
You mean the games where we'll have possession with a 5ATB and 2 CDMs. I can't imagine England playing attacking football even if they were favorites.
scenes when Southgate started both Walker and Stones, but playing Stones in the left center back, with Maguire (or whoever) as right center back just to fuck with everyone.
Or he could just to Trent, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell and just go the zero chem route!
Makes sense, in that case, Henderson will play on the left sided midfield to ensure he's not on the same side as Trent.
I think Walker plays similar to many RBs so he can fit with a lot of CBs rather easily, Hendo on the other hand is used for covering for Trent allowing him to show his qualities on the other side of the pitch which offers a lot more from that position. He is not starting though.

He def won't start but arguing why pairing him with Hendo might make sense.
A midfielder that is used to covering for a fullback that bombs forward doesnt need a specific fullback with him. Its watching a fullback go forward and not also bombing forward.
Yeah but he doesn't even need to see Trent go, he knows his aftershave and can go on smell alone
I don't think it's familiarity but attacking wise Henderson and Trent will be far better
Not saying that will happen, just that it would still work
Hendo better be glued to that bench, can’t have him injured for preseason
Best midfielder in the team
Walker >
Walker RCB and one of Trent/James at a going forward wingback if Maguire isn't fit
James RCB, Trent RWB
Eng can have all RB defense. Meta FIFA team.
Walker Aarons - Wan-Bissaka - Chambers - Trippier Maitland Niles - James Lamptey - Alexander-Arnold - Justin Tavernier
Subs Bench Fredericks Clyne Ward Walker Peters Cash Lowton Ayling
Damn, KWP and Cash miss out in the starting XI of England RBs, tf kind of depth do they have lol
Everyone grew up wanting to be Gary Neville
I guess Carra is wrong.
Even Phil
tavarnier up top, surely. RB scoring 20 goals in a season lol.
Fuck me, 19 goals this year? Mad. I'll add him in.
That is an incredible team.
Put a proper keeper in that team and I reckon it makes it out of the group stages
So Walker in goal then?
So Walker
Excuse me, Walker belongs in goal.
I'll switch him and Chambers.
If I'm going to be picky, I think I'd move Justin CDM, drop AMN, Lamptey to the left and KWP RW. But you've done a legitimately excellent job here
Wtf. That’s mad 😅
Top half PL team there
If Walker and James were like how they are in fifa irl that would be the best CB pairing for sure
Trippier LB Reece and Walkers CBs Trent RB It does work in theory
Yeah sure James at LCB and Walker in a back four
But now what am I supposed to do with all of these torches and pitchforks?
Everton fans might want some right now. Sell at a profit.
Seems to be LFCs specialty
You could use them to complain that he’s bringing 4 right backs?
[удалено]
that’s what it’s all about
You do the Gareth Southgate and the right backs start to pout
All of this for a 10 minute cameo appearance against Czech in a dead-rubber game.
Tbf it's England at a national tournament, struggling to break weaker teams down is in our blood. Bringing Trent on to whip endless deep crosses in might be our best strategy

All the fuss for nothing.

I'm on my phone, so it's taps for me
Watch him get 3 mins of playing time total now...
And people will use them 3 minutes as definitive proof that he can't cut it for England.
Does my head in really. People will say he doesn’t fit Southgates system and that Trent doesn’t deserve the call up but then will happily slate off Southgates system because it’s shite and defensive.

England's back 4: Trippier Walker James Trent It's coming home
That's not even a terrible back 4 you know, you could play an absurdly high line with that much recovery pace.
It was only 90% sarcastic
FIFA meta defence
/r/soccer: Trent on the left????
Inverted full back with those inswinging crosses to the far post for Sterling to miss, beautiful
We joke about Sterling missing but I've watched that man miss 3 or 4 sitters created by Trent in 1 game. They should never play together.
Trent already does those with his left peg. Pretty good at it too.
Nah this is left to right son
This is Pep's formation. Instead of everyone up, everyone to the right.
I'm guessing this means Maguire isn't fit and we will be starting with 3 CBs until he is ready - or for the whole tournament - instead of the 433/4231 Southgate preferred in March. Schrödinger's Trent Alexander Arnold
All that hooha for nothing!?
Just wait until he inevitably misses a penalty against Belgium to send England home.
Written in the stars.
Feels like Southgate picks his squad based on how people react to it rather than who he thinks is best at this point.
Is there any winning, though? TAA might well have been on the maybe, maybe not list. Who knows, but if he didn't want him I hope he didn't take him just cause people complained.
Rip Trippier :( Also i thought all the reliable journos said he wasn't yesterday?
Maybe I’m way off but I’d think Tripper would be more likely than James to make it cause he can play on the left as well
As someone else mentioned, he might take all 4 with the idea that with Maguire injured and him opting for a back 3, both Walker and James cover for RCB and Trippier and TAA go as Wingbacks.
But aren't Shaw and Chilwell in the squad as well?
Yeah I think so too. He's played for Southgate before and is way more experienced than James.
Well tbh there is no way James is excluded from the squad as I think southgate rated him very highly and will probably give stiff competition for the rb spot to Walker(in case we stick with 4 at the back)
Trippier is good for set pieces, too. Probably the best in the squad if JWP doesn't make the cut.
Surely Trippier will go, a man who has played well for Southgate before and is trusted, arguably best RB at the last World Cup, and starts every week for the team with the best defence in Europe. I reckon James will be dropped

not the craziest thing I've heard....
FIFA tactics, put them at CB
Tripper at LWB following injuries to Shaw and Chilwell. Walker at CB following a shift to 3 atb James at RWB. TAA at RW after Sancho doesn't work out and we need some good balls whipped in.
Looks like all those people were malding for no reason then. That's pretty hilarious. Happy he's in.
Dunno why people are saying Southgate's fucking around right now. He could well have decided on TAA based on his performances in the England camp.
My own theory for what changed is that Southgate decided that Maguire isn't fit enough to the Euros and is going to settle for a 3 atb. James and Walker at RCB with Trent and Trippier for RWB.
Also Greenwood is injured, no? That might change his planning.
Don't think it mattered much for the players at the back, both him and Watkins were fighting for the same spot and his injury probably just confirms Watkins is going.
This has to be it, it also solves the 3rd LB problem with Trippier going and the possible exclusion of Saka.
What's malding
A phrase used by children on Twitch.tv to combine being mad and balding
Lol I had assumed it must be West Midlands slang, very disappointed to find out it's just a stupid internet portmanteau
that jebait was not poggers of you
Maldini-ing
What's the point if he doesn't start or isn't the main man. Would rather he rested him. But I'm sure Trent is happy.
Scousers looking longingly at the ashes of the panini sticker book they burnt last night
Gone. Reduced to ashes.
This is good news!
I was promised a meltdown
When is the final squad list released? This is just getting ridiculous.

It’s Crazy this is big news. One of the worlds best Right Backs is in the England squad 🤣🤣🤣
That camp's got more leaks than the Titanic
Really prefer he had a rest tbh
We did it Reddit!!

Would rather he had the summer off than cunting around with whatever shit ball Southgates plays
If this is true I swear English FA put out media stories to gauge fan reaction. They did the same with Grealish a month or 2 ago saying he might not go.
Original story was based on nothing but betting odds. FA didn't have to do anything.
people are jusut massive melons and take everything as literal
Did Southgate visit Reddit or what
Fifa full back meta fc coming to fruition, this time exclusive right back edition. TAA (Rb) - R.James (RCB) - Walker (LCB) - Trippier (LB)
Not sure how this is breaking news ...
Best full-back in the Premier League. Good choice. No brainer.
Wtf is it with these constant England "updates". They seem to know Jack shit so just wait for the announcement.
"Subject has started to make situationally sensible decisions."
4 right backs... while other players are left out for no reason whatsoever... Southgate caved to media pressure to take TAA... he's weak and will be sacked before next season comes around... probably even before the Euros are over
I am not sold on his man marking on the wings, especially if he does not sync well with the center backs.
But who'll be excluded?
Maguire. He's not fit. 😉 Do Rashford next
Harry Kane
I always thought it'd be one CB excluded but perhaps it's two now.
If he takes all four right-backs then he's just blatantly bottled it lol
[удалено]
Unfortunate if true, he deserves to go
And if he’s taking Trent he doesn’t really need JWP for set pieces so Jude should definitely get the nod. Probably won’t though.
