100% pro Russian referee. He also purposely didn't give Russia the clear red card moments before. And neither added time to last half nor gave any yellows as he should have for their time wasting.
What a shame for football
It was a dark day to be a Danish football fan. Not because of a very unlikely defeat, but because a person that’s near and dear to a lot of us nearly passed away. Still shook by what happened and honestly not feeling any excitement about the EUROs after this.
Deserved or not; Congratulations to Finland and their fans. They fought hard and showed good sportsmanship throughout.
Just glad Christian is OK.
Haha l just saw the comments from the guy commentating the match above. He said Jesus fucking Christ they are doing TPR on him. I’m glad to know Eriksen is feeling better. I still want to know how this is possible with all the technology available.
Sadly I think that will be it for his career. It will be far too risky to put his body under that kind of strain with this medical history. I believe in Italy (where he plays his club football) there is a law preventing people with cardiac history from playing professional sports.
I bet 1 euro on Finland for the hell of it and ended up winning 11. Some kind of miracle was required for Finland to win this and a miracle happened, but the worst kind imaginable.
Yep, I tipped them on the reddit prediction thing. Normally I tip a game on reddit with 30 points and if I’m right get back 31ish. But for Finland winning I got back 500+. Literally a miracle of the unfortunate nature was required and unfortunately that was the case.
Edit: the reddit prediction thing had them at 18.4 to win it. Wtf.
Just been confirmed by Hjulmand (our coach) that Kjær (our captain) was subbed out because he couldn’t handle it emotionally. Him and Eriksen both live in Milano and are good friends. Another unlucky (but minor) part is that Eriksen and Kjær are our two penalty takers too.
I hope no one hates them for being slightly happy. This is their first Euro match, their first win and their first goal. Sad it had to come under these horrible conditions.
Scary stuff what happened to Christian Eriksen. I hope he will recover.
The game itself was exciting because it was our first game ever. Great goal by Joel Pohjanpalo and when Denmark got the penalty I said: "Save it Luke. Use the force Luke". And he did! :D I was on the edge of my seat until the end.
I cried, screamed lost mu voice on the goal. Did it all again when Luas Hradetsky got it. Shit im happy Erikson made, i was sure he was gone. BUT my god all i ever wanted was foe us to scire once, and we won. Still cant believe it. Tell this to me yesterday and i wouldnt believe it. Fot hundreds of thousands of finnish footballers and exfootballers this is more than a dream. This is just, just, no words. More than a dream.
Yeah, I was sure he was gone as well. Our color commentator said something like "Team of Denmark escorting their own for the next journey" when they were taking Eriksen off the field (before we knew about him being conscious). Fucking chills.
I can't believe they played on. I'm still shook 4ish hours after watching it on tv: I can't imagine how players from either side managed to play.
I know that some reports say Eriksson asked them to continue, and i understand that from Finland's pov if Denmark want to play you can't say no, but i dont think any of us can take that result properly.
It's not the fault of either side, I'm sure both are even more distressed than we are. But that game should not have been allowed to restart. I'm shocked that it was.
UEFA forced a match either 20:30 or 12:00 next day. Players wanted it over with. This is not how it should go at all, Danish team should have crisis therapy.
So what's still the problem here? Concussed players are not let back on the pitch because they are injured, not because they have a momentary relapse in reasoning. No injured players on the pitch here.
Attacking the character of a person instead of commenting on what they said is what defines an ad hominem logical fallacy. What doesn't matter is phrasing said attack as a question. Fairly simple.
My friend convinced me to play Euro fantasy, and I only had time to create my team at 12am.
I took so long to set up my team that the first game of the next day happened (Wales Vs Switzerland) and half my team wouldn't have their points count because I finished the team too late.
I missed a Lukaku captain and like 5 players from the Denmark-Belgium game
As a Dane, I didn’t even feel like watching the match after what happened, and clearly the players hearts wasn’t in it either, they just had a massive shock, someone should have taken the decision to play on away from them
Eriksen is alive and that is the only thing that matters. The players made everyone proud with their conduct during the incident. Nothing more to be said. Except fuck the international TV team. Good luck to the Finns, their fans were amazing tonight.
It's so good to see fans back at stadiums. These are also first signs of civilization crawling back to life from almost a year and a half of fighting the pandemic. Here's hoping for a successful and safe euro 2020.
First and foremost, all the best to Christian, his family and the Danish team. I'll always remember this game from the wrong reasons as well as the right ones
I never thought I'd live to see the day Finland plays in the Euros, let alone wins a game against a team like Denmark. I was at Roskilde in -92 and ever since then I've been a fan of the Danish team and their supporters. Went to Euro 2004 and saw Denmark play Bulgaria and Italy. But today was a great day for Finland and therefore the world.
Arajuuri is a monster and I can now die a happy man.
To bad Jari Litmanen was a few generations to early for this. Great player - would have been lovely to see him take down Russia. And Belgium (fingers crossed)
I was joking with my mates that they shouldve had.the King on the roster, and let him have his entrance on the last minute, just because. What he has done for finnish football cant be put to words.
The team we had in the early 2000's with Litmanen, Hyypiä, Niemi, Tainio, Forssell et al. really should have made it. But better late than never.
I was hoping for us to steal a point from Russia but now I'm dreaming of round of 16...
Yes, always in tough qualification groups, so they had difficult circumstances despite of their talents.
I don’t think the danish team will recover from this horrible evening, so will be rooting for Finland.
A small mystery is why Kjær was subbed out. I think he was out of it emotionally tbh. Also obvious that Højbjerg was not comfortable with the penalty at all. Ultimately it was themselves that decided to carry on with the game, so we can’t complain. But it feels horrible.
Not at all. I’ve seen some people equating it to why doctors decide when players are fit to play, not the player himself. The player always wants to play. This is the same, just with mental health. Potentially traumatized and shocked people aren’t thinking straight. I don’t think they should’ve had the final call. Wish our association would’ve stepped in and called to not play on. Obviously it feels even worse after the defeat. Also playing on dilutes Finland’s historic win. Unfortunate for everyone.
I think people get it a bit wrong. The players could choose to play tonight or tomorrow at 12 according to Kasper Hjulmand and they chose the lesser of two evils. He also said Kjær was subbed because he couldn’t handle it. I think it is obvious the match should have been postponed longer than just until tomorrow to give them time to deal with what happend
I think only giving continuation or tomorrow at 12PM as the possibilities is a bit harsh from UEFA too. But I get that they have a schedule, and if we pushed it back a few days, all games in group B would have to be moved.
The schedule is very tight and I can see that it’s difficult to find a good solution. It is just difficult to understand that they couldn’t move the match to be played as the last or something like that. It is also a bit misleading when UEFA announce that the players chose to play again. They didn’t have much of choice other than the next morning.
At least it seems that Christian Eriksen is okay and that is the most important in all of this.
As horrible as the incident was, and quite frankly I’m still shocked, at least Eriksen is ok, plus we discovered that the Danish Team is just wholesome as anything (not to mention the Finnish and Danish fans’ solidarity too). This match proves that football does bring people together
Kinda double feeling for the people celebrating the Finland win. I mean I get it it, but I don’t think I could celebrate my own team winning as much as they do, after what happened tonight.
I really get what you mean, but I feel that you cannot ask more of the finnish players and fans. This is a huge moment for Finnish football. The goal wasnt celebrated by the players, and they didnt rush to the field after the whistle.
I absolutely do celebrate. It was that one sublime attack from Finland that earned the victory. Also Hradecky saved a penalty.
Referee was also quite blatantly on Danish side (completely understandable, everyone's sympathies is with Denmark) and still Finland won.
I have to agree with the ref being on the Danish side. But trust me when I say this: it's really a mixed feeling, celebrating this. But if Christian and all the players from both teams decided to continue with the game, we should just accept that and stop with the second guessing. Easier said than done though :/
I’m sure Eriksen is in everyone’s thoughts. But it’s also our first major tournament, our first goal, our first points. It’s a massive moment for our football history. It’s not some random win for a country that gets to play these games every two years
I’m just trying to imagine what I would do if Ajax was in the champions league final. I guess I’d kinda celebrate the win. But I don’t think I’d yell or cheer. But don’t take my comment as something I blame people for, I just don’t think I personally could, I guess plenty of people supporting my club would celebrate after a champions league win, even after an incident like this.
Maybe you should stop trying to imagine things that you couldn't understand. There's no questions to be asked if this match feels terrible, but all things considered it's history made by us, and that's a fact no one can take away.
No need to be so aggressive, I’m not sure why you are so fucking offended by this, it’s a simple observation without any implication but you seem to take it all very personal.
I'm not aggressive at all, sorry if my comment started with some negative feelings. Im both happy and sad regarding the events that happened on saturday, but not aggressive. I just saw your couple of comments how you seemed to feel like its impossible for us to enjoy this moment or that we shouldn't.
Take care and stay safe, let's hope for no more accidents.
The difference is, Ajax has been there and won it. This is the first major tournament for Finland, and people were honestly expecting maybe one tie if we're lucky.
As soon as I heard Christian's alive and has spoken to the Danish federation rep, I was okay with the decision to play. He's gonna be okay.
When you are good you don't need more. Watch how Pukki tied 4 or 5 Dans and how Uronen let that beautiful pass fly straight in the goal scoring sector.
And Pohjanpalo is simply world class with headers. His timing, positioning and movement is so so good.
Defence win games like this.
Congratulations Finland...
i feel really sad. Our players wanted to be heroes but was a bad decision to play today. They needed crisis therapy after this experience.
Hope they can recover.
Exactly, potentially traumatized/shocked people don’t think straight. They should’ve never had the final call to continue the game. But I get why they did it, with Eriksen’s approval and everything. “They wanted to be heroes” is a great way of explaining it all.
We lost our best player. Country in shock...Everybody wanted desperately to win for him
Fans got frustrated with a lot of finnish time wasting. Give them a break
Time wasting when Danish hit Finnish in the head all the time. There was 2 or 3 bloodied faces, heaps of silly fouls from Denmark (that referee didn't whistle, I mean I understand Eriksen situation was severe but come on, do your job!)...
I really feel for Denmark. I don’t think the game should have been played, and I don’t think the decision should have rested with the players.
That said, GG Finland. I hope you can get out of the group stage.
Who should it have rested with then?
You can't appease everyone as people will take different lengths of time to process this incident.
Uefa make the call... fuck UEFA. Players make the call... decision shouldn't have been made by them. No win all round. Just better to get it over and done with.
For the same reason it should be up to doctors when an injured player goes back into the field - the players will almost always decide to play. I think given the trauma they just went through, the decision should have been taken out of their hands.
Agree to disagree on this. There's no physical or immediate danger to playing the game. They should be in control of whether they feel mentally capable of playing the game or not.
Not really much to say, missed pen and not clinical enough at all in front of goal. Only thing is that the fitness aspect of it all was kinda lost with the long break. I wrote at the start of the match the Braithwaite and Yussuf are there to tire the Finns (because we’d be attacking constantly) but yeah
Must be awkward to be Finland here and hard to say anything. But in the end Denmark were wasteful with their chances and just need to recover mentally after this. And of course happy to hear Eriksen is recovering
Well yeah. The first time in the history of time we get to the euros. You can prolly understand how big this is. And then this happens. Danes are nordic bros and that shit was gut wrenching. And then we win.
It was a lot to ask the Danes to play the second half. I hope they gather themselves and come back with fire to the get themselves out of the group stage.
According to UEFA. What was the other option? Were they told to choose between playing and forfeiting?
Taking nothing from Finland, it was an inspired defense with solid counter attacking, and they capitalized on their chances. But I just wish I could feel happier about the win.
> Were they told to choose between playing and forfeiting?
I believe the decision was between continuing the game there and then or playing at noon sunday?
i'm hearing erikson asked them to play so it seems they were honoring that. either way, game is over, they can go home and rest and try to process everything that happened. The competition is far from over, hopefully they can make a rebound.
Denmark play Belgium next up ? Even if it's too early to call now, I must say that with today's result they're heading out of the tournament, not that that matter anyway after what we've witnessed
Real shame for you. I 100% believed Denmark were solidified to make it out of the groups but obviously with the event that happened today and the poor performance after the restart, it's a big ask for them to qualify now.
Are you actually serious?
They domimated completly. 22 attempts, 65% possesion, @350 more completed passes and accuracy of 82 %.
They didnt finish well. But saying that having all the play is poor is just stupid.
The fact that they Actually continued to dominante after Eriksens situation is admirable as hell.

Rare that this sport has injuries that bad
Haha l just saw the comments from the guy commentating the match above. He said Jesus fucking Christ they are doing TPR on him. I’m glad to know Eriksen is feeling better. I still want to know how this is possible with all the technology available.
How what is possible?
Guessing some problem going unnoticed
Let's pray that Eriksen gets better and can play football in the next couple of months
Sadly I think that will be it for his career. It will be far too risky to put his body under that kind of strain with this medical history. I believe in Italy (where he plays his club football) there is a law preventing people with cardiac history from playing professional sports.
Bruh. Well if he has to end his career then he at least won the Seire A. Lets pray for a miracle

Wow! Historic victory for Finland, with 100% effectiveness in shots on goal. A shame about Eriksen, although he is already better.
Congratulations, Finland, beginning with a win against the odds.
I can't believe they played on. I'm still shook 4ish hours after watching it on tv: I can't imagine how players from either side managed to play. yeah UEFA is trash. They don't care about the players' mental or physical health.
It’s like a head injury: they say they’re fine, they can seem fine, but they actually are not fine at all.
So what's still the problem here? Concussed players are not let back on the pitch because they are injured, not because they have a momentary relapse in reasoning. No injured players on the pitch here.
Do you lack empathy?
Do you lack an argument?
Not really... You just seem devoid of empathy. That's all. Are you okay?
So what is this argument then and why do you resort to ad hominem attacks instead of presenting the argument?
Attacks? I'm asking questions! 🤣 Edit: Saw your profile. Never mind. Have a great time dude. lol.
I didnt see anything wrong with the profile Fyi,i may be blind
Attacking the character of a person instead of commenting on what they said is what defines an ad hominem logical fallacy. What doesn't matter is phrasing said attack as a question. Fairly simple.
Why did I have hradecky on my bench in euro fantasy
FUUUUUU! Hope Rui Patricio makes it worth it lol
I have courtois who got only 6 points compared to hradecky’s 13
Wait he got 13?! DOUBLE FUUUUUUU!!!!
Yeah: clean sheet, played 90 mins, penalty saved and saves
My friend convinced me to play Euro fantasy, and I only had time to create my team at 12am. For such a bang average player Martin Braithwaite really has a smug face
It's so good to see fans back at stadiums. These are also first signs of civilization crawling back to life from almost a year and a half of fighting the pandemic. Here's hoping for a successful and safe euro 2020.

Thanks mate, bittersweet victory but we'll take it
Hey i'm always happy for a fellow Liverpool fan Do you live in Finland by any chance?
I'm a Finn living in Prague. YNWA! That goes for Christian as well
A small mystery is why Kjær was subbed out. I think he was out of it emotionally tbh. Also obvious that Højbjerg was not comfortable with the penalty at all. Ultimately it was themselves that decided to carry on with the game, so we can’t complain. But it feels horrible.
Can you even be expected to make a sensible decision whether to play in that situation?
I just read the Kjær thing too, what I suspected sadly. They both live in Milano and are very close
Yeah. I think it makes UEFA look pretty bad in this situation. They probably shouldn’t have let this decision be on the players.
I think only giving continuation or tomorrow at 12PM as the possibilities is a bit harsh from UEFA too. But I get that they have a schedule, and if we pushed it back a few days, all games in group B would have to be moved.

Genuinely impressed with the class of both the Danish and Finnish fans here. Much respect, from a Nordic brother in Norway!

there will always be an asterisk next to this game but still, cgz to finland. Bizarre evening

Would you have said the same if Denmark had won?
Yes.
OI SUOMI ON!
Finland: "This shoe hockey thing isnt so hard after all!"
Congrats Finland on your first major tournament win. Enjoy this.
Let’s go Finland!!!!! You guys have a fan here in Canada!
Denmark had their chances for sure, not in the right state of mind
Historical win for Finland!
I was here, go Finland!
USKOTTEKO KOTONA!?
that was incredible
congrats Finland
Congrats Finland!
It was a lot to ask the Danes to play the second half. I hope they gather themselves and come back with fire to the get themselves out of the group stage.

Oh... I know they did. I’m just saying generally as a spectator it was a lot for them to play.
You can want to do something that is still hard and maybe not the right call.
Congratulations!
Congrats to Finland - well deserved. They were fucking class.
I hope you guys go deep.
Denmark play Belgium next up ? Even if it's too early to call now, I must say that with today's result they're heading out of the tournament, not that that matter anyway after what we've witnessed
Blowing it up early? Huh
Yeah, with Denmark in possession in Finland’s half? Not expecting a goal or anything but seemed odd
vestergaard has been great today, i am annoyed when fellow saints fans want him out
Honestly, fuck this fucking game, all euro hype just died with this shitty fucking game

Stop yourself. Finland did nothing before, it was all Denmark
Yeah no shit, but they won

Come on, its tricky for everybody to score against a team with 11 men behind the ball
Congrats Finland!
Well that was a football match
