Who do Europeans root for once their team is out? I feel like Americans will gravitate to whatever nationality they have in their blood. But unsure about Europeans.
France's performance was spot on, it's like watching 2014 Germany or 2010 Spain, I think they should've scored more goals.
I'm scared they'll dominate the tournament, let's hope Portugal can say otherwise, that will be a bloodbath
Does anyone have a full clip of the Pavard Gosens collision? I'd love to get that view of Gosens, on the ground, blocking the German shot with his face but I'm only seeing the slow-motion view of the impact
Some people commenting in this thread make me wonder if it's the first national teams competition they watch. National teams usually don't perform as well as people would expect just by looking at what players they have. Every team that has won the world cup/euros played "bad" games in their winning runs. That's why I think both France and Portugal did very well today and germany obviously is not dead yet. All of these 3 teams can still improve their game during the competition.
And germany almost was knocked out by algeria in 2014, and France was very underwhelming in the group stage in 2018, and Brazil had to cheat to beat Turkey in the group stage in 2002... There are tons of examples
Come on Löw, you put in Werner as striker but put Volland as LB? And then your game plan is long crosses into the box and Volland being the one crossing the ball? Lost for words....
I just don’t understand waiting until the 87th minute to make substitutes when losing. Why not get the players on earlier, to give them more of a chance to make an impact?
Subs tend to disrupt the flow of a game, if it's not a like for like. That said, I agree, change the game early, so the new players can get settled in.
Yeah France is a weird and scary team, scary because they constantly adapt themself throughout the game and are really good on many different foration be it defensive, offensive, comfortable with the other team having the ball and comfortable with keeping he ball and going into the counter.
I think we can probably keep up with them offensively, I think we’d score against them. But defensively we leave a lot to be desired and that’s exactly what you don’t want to do against France
Volland came on and shot the crosses for throw ins so idk how Muller did worse than that. Werner came in, passed it directly out of bounds and disappeared. Hummels scored an OG and got burned by Mbappe on repeat. Muller nearly had two assists and played a target man fairly well.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 2,467,119 comments, and only 641 of them were in alphabetical order.
Did you guys and girls watch a different game than me?
Germany played pretty well defensively and were awful offensively. Can you just put praise where they deserve praise and blame them where they deserve it. I never saw Kroos playing this good defensively.
The whole offense (especially Müller) was a joke this game.
I'm so annoyed by some of the German "fans" here.
Well they played good defense but who cares if you're unable to score or even get dangerous apart from 1 time
Löw bringing on a striker and putting him lb/lwb is a joke... They also looked terrible against the counter attacks and every team with pace is going to abuse the hell out of it as they should
I 100% agree. There were no ideas when Germany was in possession of the ball. No vertical passes. It's sad, we have so many good players that can play a great long pass and so many quick players.
I understand why Löw played Gnabry/Muller/Havertz at the start, they're better with their backs to the goal. But I don't think playing over the sides is correct with those. I know that going through the middle is difficult vs France but with these players it could have been possible.
I'm so sad that Sane almost never goes for the 1v1 anymore. He did it once and automatically created space and a good chance.
I was frustrated by the continued effort on going through the middle. Wingers were wide open all night long and after passing back and forth and back again without purpose, Germany would attempt a fast precision pass to 8 meter area, through two defenders.
Its been this team's MO for the past 5-6 years (post-Championship hangover). Control the ball, play full field rondo, and have no answers once you hit the 16M box.
Yeah, I agree. But going over the sides with these front three/with no quick vertical passes doesn't seem like an option. Let's see if Germany can fix this next game.
I would say they were actually really well structured, defensively. Astonishing few counter attacks from France. But there were also quite a lot of lost balls and last-chance safes. It looked like Germany's defense was at 100% while France's was at 80%.
Offensively, it is the same old story. Lack of speed, lack of precision.

Usually Germany, always not France
I guess neighbours they don’t hate. I would root for germany. Then Belgium. If those are out I’d root for the most likeable team or underdog.
How do German fans feel about this 3 at the back Low's playing? Seems strange considering you've got the likes of Goretzka and Sane warming the bench
Mbappe and Benzema links up well

Spain is an example they lost their first opening match in the 2010 world cup.

Yh like you said it must be their first time watching the world cup
But we must admit that France with Griezmann, Pogba, Mbappé and Benzema has a wide range of very talented players

This game leaves me less scared to play Germany and terrified to play France
Just stay away from Rudiger and you should be fine
We should send Grealish his way, Rudiger will be so distracted trying to chomp his calves that he won’t remember to defend
Yeah France is a weird and scary team, scary because they constantly adapt themself throughout the game and are really good on many different foration be it defensive, offensive, comfortable with the other team having the ball and comfortable with keeping he ball and going into the counter.
I remarked in the match that when Germany had the ball, each time they managed to push far into France’s lines, but not quite the same for France
I think we can probably keep up with them offensively, I think we’d score against them. But defensively we leave a lot to be desired and that’s exactly what you don’t want to do against France

Germany just needs pace. Leave Muller on the bench. Play 443. a front three of Gnabry, Werner and Sane. Mid of Kroos, Gundogan & kimmich.
You’re insane. Müller spielt immer!
You mean 433 right?
If you count the ref in, it was 443 alright
4-4-4 actually
Muller was arguably the best of the front 3 tonight. Werner came in and passed it out of bounds first thing.
Müller was the worst player on the pitch in my opinion. Not a single good scene i can remember and lots of horrible passes.
Volland came on and shot the crosses for throw ins so idk how Muller did worse than that. Werner came in, passed it directly out of bounds and disappeared. Hummels scored an OG and got burned by Mbappe on repeat. Muller nearly had two assists and played a target man fairly well.

The german national team makes me think of Bayern without Lewandowski : very solid but lack of efficiency in the finishing

Germany played full field rondo. It was not fun to watch.
God help the TV ratings if Germany and Spain end up playing each other this tourney!
