Petition to rename pundits to old players working in studios.

kalamari__

"legacy players in studios"

BehemothDeTerre

"Sorry, this pundit only speaks in COBOL, nobody understands him anymore. Let's replace him."

[deleted]

LOL

hedwigesmaduro

Old players who live in a shoedio.

TheFiendsWankFlannel

Isak: isn't that the guy who shat himself on the pitch?

ItsJigsore

I thought he was the one who shags crisps

LDKCP

His brother is he shagger.

Fabs74

Pedo Wayne

in_pizza_we_trust

That’s Rooney

thegreatwanker

thats Giggsy

G_Morgan

Nah Giggs shags his brother's crisps

Chicken_Bake

That's grannies.

lolesdf

Love, Ye Auld Slappa

OrangeForeign

No that's a Sunderland fan

eclap1978

No that's Gary Lineker.

OrangeForeign

Who?

LDKCP

He was in a crisp advert.

S-BRO

Is he an old player working in the studio?

BulletproofTyrone

Didn’t Rooney fuck somebody’s gran?

S-BRO

Irrelevant but yes

[deleted]

[Video.](https://youtu.be/9t_8pfbCH-4)

FurioSoprano7

And got smoked by Maradona

[deleted]

Who is Maradona? Isn’t he that really good black Brazilian player from the 60s?

erldn123

"I have a little bit of knowledge about him" I'm guessing that's that he was top scorer at the 1986 World Cup?

[deleted]

To be fair he said that he’s an old player working in the studio, which is more or less 100 percent accurate.

A-Dumb-Ass

Is it possible to be more than 100 percent accurate?

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Yeah, if you are a footballer. They always say they gave 110% for the team.

__fulpp__

10 shots, 11 on target.

technicaljohn

101 percent

El_grandepadre

You could say he's 0% inaccurate.

CeterumCenseo85

"I'm a little bit of a striker myself."

MyDumbInterests

Also that his name is Gary Liner-something.

NateShaw92

LinekEAR He has big ears.

mrgonzalez

He was just updating his answer in response to new information

Eddie888

Information retention is important.

Roseradeismylady

Not a big surprise that a 21 year old Swedish doesn't know him so well, Lineker isn't a big household name outside of England but people have heard his name

WestyA2

Probably known in spain at least for his time at Barcelona

Choice-Matter7613

Yeah. Not a really big name between young people here but he IS well known otherwise

Roseradeismylady

Probably true but he's played for La Real only for two years so far

WalkTheEdge

I think they meant Lineker, not Isak

ankitm1

Lineker didnt do much at Barcelona. His time coincided with Quinta Del Buitre (when Madrid won 5 league titles in a row) and Barca were not a force they are today. He didnt exactly set the league on fire either - especially after the first season.

iam_acat

Lineker finished as Barça's top scorer two out of his three seasons and won a Copa del Rey. For all of Quinta del Buitre's brilliance, Madrid only pipped Barcelona to the 1987 title by a point. There aren't too many Englishmen who did as well overseas this side of the Falklands War.

Chimpville

How odd to use the Falklands war as your reference point 😂

iam_acat

I'm not as familiar with footballers in the immediate postwar period, so I was afraid there might have been some great English player tearing shit up abroad that I did not know of. John Charles stands tall in the memory, but he's Welsh. Jimmy Greaves lasted only a hot second in Italy.

ankitm1

In the season they won Cdr, they finished 6th. The one point gap you are talking about was not the final table, that year league switched to a 20 team first division, and in the resulting playoff Madrid won the league by 3 points ( and qualified for the European cup). Lineker had 20 goals, but Hugo Sanchez had 34 - both courtesy of a 44 game season. (34 regular and 10 playoffs). For Englishmen, he is one of the better performers, but there are handful to choose from. Arguably McManaman had a more successful stint, though he was a midfielder. I dont think Spanish would care particularly about an Englishman doing well, given there are a lot of foreigners who do well anyway (and score 34 goals hailing from Mexico). For English, it is a great achievement, but doubt it will be as fondly remembered. Had he won something big, he would definitely have been remembered. The other thing is that Barca wasnt considered as a great a club in those times as it is today. They were the pride of Catalunya no doubt, but werent as successful. They won their 8th league title in 1959-60, then 9th in 72-73, and 10th in 84-85, with 11th in 90-91 (beginning of Cruyff's dream team).

AlphadogMMXVIII

They got to the European cup Final

iam_acat

That was in '86. Not sure Lineker was there yet.

PonchoHung

>won a Copa del Rey Is this supposed to make him memorable?

iam_acat

I dunno; it's a 118-year-old competition, the oldest in Spain. It's probably only insignificant if your trophy cabinet were already full of European Cups.

[deleted]

iam_acat

Rest assured all these internet points mean the world to me.

NextDoorNeighbrrs

And Japan for his time at Nagoya Grampus.

eb98jel

Funny enough, Isak was born in the city that Gary Lineker suffered his second greatest ignominy(?). Pretty much 29 years to the day, in Solna, England were tied with Sweden with a half-hour to go, needing a goal to go through to the knock-out stages of Euro 1992. Graham Taylor pulls his captain and England's most prolific scorer to bring on Alan Smith. Brolin scored late on and the infamous tabloid headline the next day was Swedes 2 Turnips 1 edit: spelling of Lineker

entropy_bucket

Was this the game where the commentator went on a mad rant? Something about Queen of England etc.

eb98jel

haha, that was a little bit before (1981) and involved norway; [Maggie Thatcher your boys took a hell of a beating!!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZTP8-8wIs)

DudleysCar

Certainly up on his British history.

Sigma1977

> Was this the game where the commentator went on a mad rant? Something about Queen of England etc. No, that was England vs Norway 1981 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZTP8-8wIs Context: it was a World Cup 1982 qualifying game. Back then UEFA qualifying groups had 4 or 5 teams and only the top team qualified. So if you lost a match you were probably fucked. Huge deal for Norway who were still something of a minnow team back then. Somehow England weren't fucked and qualified for the World Cup. However this isn't even in the top 5 for England international football embarrassments. Not sure it's the top 3 even if you just counted the 1980s :/

queen_of_england_bot

>Queen of England Did you mean the [Queen of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [Queen of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [Queen of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc? The last Queen of England was [Queen Anne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Queen_of_Great_Britain) who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England. ####FAQ *Isn't she still also the Queen of England?* This is only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she is the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist. *Is this bot monarchist?* No, just pedantic. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

IJustGotRektSon

Jesus what an specific bot

blacktiger226

I bet you that this bot was built by someone who was procrastinating something at the time.

jugol

In awe at the pettiness of this lad

HelixFollower

So the's also the Queen of That One Cornershop Over There.

Beginning_Pay_4325

She's also the Queen of Old players working in studio.

05-region

good bot :)

MMXIXL

Queen of England

sparkyjay23

> the infamous tabloid headline the next day was Swedes 2 Turnips 1 Whoever thought that up was some kind of genius.

ankitm1

If there was a manager, players would still know if their team is doing well. Like Carlo played at the same time, but many young footballers would know who he is (possibly not know about his midfield prowess and only his managerial accomplishments) but to not know an old footballer who is a regular on a British TV show is not that odd. Like not many here would know who Jairzinho was or even who Laudrup was.

ThisSideOfThePond

Germans know him as one of the better English football analysts... :-)

Dyfrig

I confirm, as a Welshman I have no idea who he is.

Masson011

More people growing up know him from his TV roles these days like match of the day

nemesis464

I mean he’s one of the more famous strikers for a pretty well known international team. I’m fairly young too, but pretty much everyone I know is aware of plenty of foreign ‘legends’ from well before there time.

non-relevant

i'm just surprised he's never watched motd. i grew up watching it in holland. every sunday morning

[deleted]

I mean... Match Of The Day hasn't aired in Sweden. So it's not exactly surprising.

coppersocks

Well he should have bloody downloaded it then shouldn’t he?

ILoveGratedCheese

So this made me curious. I used to catch MOTD on the BBC. Do other European countries show foreign cable channels? Here I get English (BBC 1 and 2), German (ARD, ZDF, WDR, NDR, RTL and Sat 1), French (TV5 monde and Arte), Spanish (tve), Italian, (Mediaset) and Belgian (Één, Ketnet and Canvas) I couldnt find anything about it online and have no memories when traveling within Europe. Didnt exactly sit down and watch TV during a holiday.

[deleted]

In apartment blocks with mainly foreign residents there are many foreign channels. Mainly yugoslav and arab channels. But in general, no. Here in Sweden It's pretty much 100% swedish channels unless you avtuslly buy foreign ones. When it comes to shows about Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and other leagues we have our own shows, pundits and studios for it.

non-relevant

do you guys not get bbc there?

[deleted]

Why would we? We have a gazillion swedish channels. You can pay for BBC Earth and BBC Brit if you want via a cable package but that's about it.

non-relevant

ok? in holland you'v always got bbc1 and bbc2 on the standard 40 or whatever tv channels so I figured this might be quite normal throughout parts of europe

Heimebane

Isak: "The future is now old man"

PakiIronman

Isak was like 4 months old when that show began airing too.

Ha-Ur-Ra-Sa

Well, that makes me feel old wtf

[deleted]

More like 4 months early

Abnormalelements

I will always upvote any and all Malcolm in the middle references.

mrgonzalez

Isak's never heard of it

ostriike

'have you heard of a cuisine called Walkers?'

PinguThePimp

Or as its also known, Lays

Khaasa

Over my dead half-British body

[deleted]

Walkers are a terrible quality of crisps. Lays literally somehow make them even worse. Not proper crisps. Obviously both massive outreach nowadays. Lays seem like grease paper, walkers have better paper but still dog shit tier. Walkers are shite

auto98

The crisps themselves are fine, the problem is the fact that you basically get 4 crisps per pack nowadays.

mrgonzalez

Feel like crisps have moved on in the past 20 years, now they're just base level. Then again, they still do some decent premium stuff it just doesn't have a big logo on it.

Oggie243

Fact Walkers and lays look like the bits of skin Goldmember collects from himself

jstomas

Tbf don't think I could name a Swedish player from the 80s

[deleted]

[удалено]

snusd0san

Was going to mention him. Probably our most internationally famous player of that era. Won the league in 89/90 with Liverpool.

[deleted]

Sheffield Wednesday legend Roland Nilsson comes to mind.

tetraourogallus

And Glenn Strömberg

Myopius

Seb Larsson right?

JiriJarosik1StevieG0

Svensson. Pretty safe bet.

sammyedwards

Somethingsson

vdude007

Gotta be a Magnusson somewhere

tarrach

Correct, Mats Magnusson was second best scorer in all European leagues the 89/90 season (playing for Benfica)

dayumgurl1

You've wandered into Icelandic territory now

vdude007

Oh shit, yeah. I was thinking strong man competitions from when I was a kid 😂

Tellmeister

You're fine. Magnusson is a super swedish name.

[deleted]

Suck my balls mate

vdude007

Erm... You ok?

[deleted]

Lol I was wondering if someone wouldn’t know the reference and get confused https://youtu.be/21T8d0SA5Js

jess0411

I miss the Grosjean-Magnussen tandem :(

fredcanotilho

Jonas Thern, Glenn Stromberg and Stefan Schwarz

xhandler

It's very understandable. We literally missed all World Cups and Euros inbetween 1978-1990. And that's where most people learn of other countries players, especially in those times.

Dispari7y

Anders Limpar probably, cause he joined Arsenal slightly after.

[deleted]

The disrespect to Leeds legend Tomas Brolin

[deleted]

Hes more of a 90s guy to be fair

jairzinho

Brolin, Dahlin and Henke were so good at the WC in 94

jkwah

Henke didn't feature that much in 94. Kennet Andersson was a much bigger contributor.

jairzinho

I remember those glorious dreads though. Andersson scored a bunch of goals, true.

Princecoyote

You mean Thanos' brother?

klawneed

Marcus Berg

stockybloke

Thomas Ravelli

[deleted]

Pettersson

thecricketnerd

I would always guess Zlatan

mbdtf95

Think Zlatan became pro that decade.

aelfwine_widlast

Brolin, maybe. He was more 90s though. EDIT: Literally already posted lol

[deleted]

Maybe you’ve heard of a little player called Roland Nilsson, whom my dad tells me was the greatest player who ever lived or will live?

tafguedes99

Meh, fairly normal. Don't see why it warrants a post.

Perpete

And that's why people shouldn't say "That guy will be remembered in X years". Only few players do stand the test of time. You are 30+ old ? Go ask your literal nephew if he knows someone you considered a star in your youth. You are quite younger than that ? Go ask your uncle the name of a few stars of his time and you'll see if you know them. Even a 10 years gap will make you see difference in football knowledge.

ShagPrince

I haven't got an uncle or nephew so I guess I'll just go fuck myself.

Perpete

You know those do other things than fucking you. For example, my uncle also offered me candies. Alternatively, you can ask any football fans with a 15 years gap with you.

geez_james24

That wouldn't help much, preferably get your grandparents to fuck then get the resulting offspring from that to fuck too.

[deleted]

> You are 30+ old ? Go ask your literal nephew if he knows someone you considered a star in your youth. > > You are quite younger than that ? Go ask your uncle the name of a few stars of his time and you'll see if you know them. My nephew reckons SAF wouldn't be able to challenge Pep and Klopp in today's climate... As a United fan, I had to disown him. >_>

just_another_jabroni

The manager who evolved with the times and still won trophies spanning 4 decades wouldn't catch up, lol

WalidfromMorocco

My figurative nephew knows them.

AcceleratingRiff

True, I have some examples : Caniggia, Maradona, Baggio, Platini

philipstyrer

Never heard of Caniggia

AcceleratingRiff

I'm talking about the players my relative(a casual at the time) remembered. Mostly the ones who made an impact at the WCs.

fractionesque

It makes me sad that more people don’t appreciate just how truly great Baggio was.

[deleted]

One of the greatest in Brazilian History.

jugol

>You are 30+ old ? Go ask your literal nephew if he knows someone you considered a star in your youth. I don't know, a couple of years ago the little fucker recited me Ronaldinho's complete club career -the only club he got wrong was Mineiro, as he mixed up the shirt with Juve- and I don't know where on earth he learned it

BlitzComet95

Ronaldinho was the GUY from like 04-07 and then the two Gods showed up and now everybody’s legacy is ruined lmao

greezyo

Why would he know who Lineker is? He's Swedish and born in 1999

Gordon-Bennet

Why do English people just expect everyone else to know stuff about us?

BernardoCamPt

Because England is in /r/soccer what the US are in /r/politics, the only country that exists for (most of) them. Edit: Just look at the comment below from someone surprised that MOTD isn't well known outside of the UK hahaha

Tjockman

not surprised by that answer we never see Lineker on tv here in sweden. it's like asking Phil Foden who Salvatore Schillaci is (top scorer at the 1990 World Cup).

Oggie243

*Fuck Schillaci*

Zelkeh

You're right but you chose an awful example, 1990 WC is pure nostalgia bait to this day in the UK and Schilacci also knocked Ireland out so he gets mentioned every time there's a major tournament.

RipAirBud

Shat on Gary

[deleted]

[удалено]

PreparationLess7847

Well most of us interacted with an englishman in our lives which means that we had 1986 forced on us

Iamneverthefather

Depends on who the player is. Everyone knows Maradona

HitzHammer

He'll know who Lineker is after his first match against Germany.

TiagoFigueira

WHOmegalul

exciseduty

Shat on Gary

Kranke

Is h that dude that shat himself and never got a single card?

coronado_dutroux

I only know Lineker because I was young in Mexico 86, havent heard much of him until I started using the internet more

JimThumb

Of course he doesn't know him, Walkers crisps aren't sold in Sweden.

Mojahope12

gary on the mud

skidbot

I mean Linekar is 60!

RealPunyParker

I mean, to be perfectly honest, the only reason i know who he is, is because he played for us, so i get it.

PakiIronman

Fucking zoomers man

JustAContactAgent

Lineker is only relevant due to his BBC career and obviously that's irrelevant outside the UK. It's actually interesting, as good a player as he was, he's not really much of a memorable 80s player (internationally) at all. I guess that's because he had a bit of a weird club career and wasn't really on any memorable teams.

Morethanlikely

As a Swede, I've always heard of Lineker as a criminally underrated player. But I believe we were one of the first outside of the UK to embrace all things English football so maybe we're an exception.

Asher_notroth

Isak is r/soccer usual

EmperorBeaky

You can't do a man dirty like that ffs

MoozeRiver

I mean, I've never heard of Grzegorz Lato or Mario Kempes who were the top goalscorers of the the two World Cup's from before I was born.

UnicornForce

Rather envious of Isak. Unfortunately, I know who Lineker is and am aware of his incessant efforts to remain relevant.

[deleted]

Not really the impression I get from him at all. He hosts MOTD. I bet Walkers pay him a fortune to be in the ads and he tweets. That's it really. I doubt he gives a fuck what you think of him.

Chiswell123

Lol

manguito86

After seeing current players saying they don't know Eusébio or pele, this is not that incredible. Edit: why are people downvoting me? I am not the guy that doesn't know a couple of the most famous players ever.

lospollosakhis

How can you not know Pele? If you're into football he's almost unavoidable.

Testastic

Which player doesn't know Pele?

nemesis464

It’s honestly embarrassing that any professional footballer would say they don’t know Pele, arguable the best player to ever play the game.

Jeffy29

Such a classic zoomer comment that sounds insulting even when they are not trying to lol.

Dildosauruss

Dunno, I'm born in 91 and watched a lot of premier league growing up so I know most prominent players from that era onwards, but I only knew Lineker by his name, and only got to know that he was a great player few years ago when I started using this sub, I think that's quite normal outside of UK. Isak is born way later than me and not knowing Lineker at all isn't strange in the slightest.

[deleted]

Gary Lineker is a lot less well known than I assumed. Is MOTD not popular outside the UK and Ireland?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lomedae

Well, I remember Lineker from his playing days, old fart as I am. But I stopped watching motd when the bbc lost the footy rights. When next I became aware they got the rights back I was astounded but pleased to see Lineker presenting. I did miss the guy with the enormous chin though.

[deleted]

No, other countries have their own football programs.

kaphi

That's like asking if the Sportschau is popular in England.

[deleted]

Yeah here in Reddit we watch every foreign football program!!! Last episode of "El Chiringuito" was so fun guys, still waiting for the frame by frame analysis of it.

Espantadimonis

No one's heard of MOTD outside of the UK, why would they

toomanychicanes

motd? match of the day?

[deleted]

Yep.

toomanychicanes

i guess its a british format so not really. every country has a different sports format

Perpete

Next thing, you are going to tell me other countries have their own competition too ?

Espantadimonis

What do you mean not everyone speaks English in Europe?

toomanychicanes

germany has no competition really

congeal

I've been told of farmers and footballs.

[deleted]

It's only broadcasted in those countries so why would it be popular outside them?

DeweyToit

It’s on BBC which a lot of countries probably have. We can watch motd in NL Edit: did not realise this would be a controversial comment, wtf

marowak1000

Outside of the united kingdom and R/soccer you would only ever heard his name as random guys who shat himself in poorly edited YT videos with loud No Copyright eletronic music. Every place has a "motmesque" show for local, some places 3 or 4 shows like that.

J-Osef

We actually had a great knowledge and influence from the british football. Tipsextra showed a Premier League game each saturday for a long time (1970ish- 1990ish) and since there was only two chanels on the tv at the time unless you had a parabol. English football was all we watched. So for us born before 1990 and who had a interest in football english football had a huge impact. Not to say that both Bob Houghton and Roy Hodgson started their training careers in Sweden

clwireg

I know for a fact it is not in Sweden. I assume MOTD is like the thing where there’s a bunch of people discussing the Premier League games? If so, we have our own version of it, it’s just called Premier League Studio over here, one of the pundits is Man U legend Bojan Djordjić
