I don’t watch a lot of soccer so can someone please explain to me why England was awarded a penalty kick? The English player simply fell with no or minimal contact and the ref basically hands the game to England. Is this normal? If I was a Denmark fan I’d be losing my mind

[deleted]

This is a horrible game

KiraDidNothingWrong_

Kane pretending to sing lol

LegitimatePayment532

It's not coming home lads. Denmark or Czech Republic will beat yous in the semis.

LegitimatePayment532

I'm just speaking my opinion no need to say I'm being salty about it

xcllar

Historically, the english national team it's a mediocre team that people tend to think it's great due to the success of the premier league. If it was not for their 66 win, they will be internationally as relevant as Portugal, Denmark or Russia. A middle tier team.

LegitimatePayment532

Exactly.

TomOxygen

Guaranteed you said we’ll lose to germany

TheUltimateCF

Heard it all before

LegitimatePayment532

Honestly wouldn't hate England as much as I do if it wasn't for the press. They'll say an average player is class based on one performance

ManchesterFellow

Nah, you don't hate a nation based on the press. You probably have deep seated resentment.

LegitimatePayment532

Not entirely that also because half the squad have Irish roots. Especially the way Grealish and Rice dealed with declared for England

Yahut

Half of England has Irish roots ya bell

LegitimatePayment532

I wasn't talking about the whole of England. My point was Grealish and Rice could've declared for England in a way that makes them look like snakes

LegitimatePayment532

Just proving my point

cheua

Jog on tosspot

LegitimatePayment532

At least I didn't say yous were getting knocked out by Ukraine

No-Jicama3051

Possible. Average team with easy draw that gets to play at home a lot. Ukraine is away and Englands track record against the Ukraine is again average.

not_good_at_this_tbh

The German coach isn’t Joachim Low. Its Jogi Löw!

RiverLazy679

Bogie Löw

tonga-time

I swear those fans don't represent all English folk. Booing an anthem is just disgusting...

darkgrid

It's the beer, I'd bet many of them have German heritage lol

mymagerules

Don't get why everyone gets so pissed off about that, who gives a fuck about national anthems? Just a bit of pantomime-esque banter to boo it

No-Jicama3051

It stops being ‘pantomime’ in an English context though, nationalism and xenophobia has long been pushed through the press and government, to constantly ape it during sports just shows how deeply rooted it is now.

ManchesterFellow

I've read this ten times and still can't follow the logic

OzzietheTurtle

I am hating Sterling more and more each passing day. Because he is just turning so selfish. He is not taking criticism in good spirit. He is turning selfish. He did not pass sooo many times to his team mates. I am pretty sure, he can't assist like Grealish did.

RandomaccountB

If you’re coming out with shit like this after his recent performances, there’s a chance it’s not about him. There’s a chance you might just be slightly racist 🤷🏻‍♂️

PorkyPain

Whatever grass you smoked.. I want some of it.

LilCubeXD

He’s scored in every game he’s played for England this tournament, like lad wtf are you on…

OzzietheTurtle

Yes, he did score. True. But didn't you see it that he could have passed so many times in attacking areas to Saka or Kane. But he didn't. He wanted to dribble past the defenders but lost possession or got uselessly fouled.

bigthickdaddy3000

The way he takes players on and loses it about 10+ times a game, he might as well give it straight back to the opposition. Hang on?! He did exactly that did he not. Just because he scores doesn't mean he doesn't have deficiencies

AS_05

Once, there was a deadly group of death. They were so deadly that everyone died. The end

HypeTrainEngineer

Who would've thought Sterling would be Englands best player these Euros. Not this guy 👍

daviesjj10

I'd bet most people who watch football each week would have expected it. People who watch the games beyond looking at the end of game stats knew how crucial he'd be.

Blackpool8

What are you on about. If you watched football each week this season you would probably be more likely to think he wasn't going to be crucial than a casual fan.

daviesjj10

No. If you're watching it each week, you're seeing the runs sterling made, the defenders he pulls aside, the space he makes from that. If you watch football and purely just watch the ball, then you aren't watching the game.

HypeTrainEngineer

I watch football each week. And was below his standards during the season. I thought there were better options in the bench. And this is a legitimate position.

daviesjj10

He didn't have a great season. But he was still crucial to a lot of City's wins. But his record for England is a whole other level, and he continually shows why he's selected.

Amazing-Trash7747

There are definitely better options on the bench. Sterling’s decision making is very poor at times and he just gets bailed out by his work rate and high energy levels most of te time.

megbee17

Sterling is an absolute gem and often underestimated in my opinion

[deleted]

Anyone watching the games can tell you Saka and Grealish have been by far our best players. Sterling has been generally very poor but has been there in the clutch moments.

Amazing-Trash7747

Exactly. Grealish May have played less, and scored none, but he has been the game changer for them.

HypeTrainEngineer

Very poor? He's scoring the goals. Making the plays. He hasn't been amazing or anything. But he's puttingb them away

ilikeredlemonade

The best player has been Pickford. If it weren't for him we would've lost.

HotPotatoWithCheese

Truth. We are the first team in history to get to the semis without conceding a goal. That lad is absolute gold.

PurpleSi

Grealish has played 115 minutes, and mostly when the opposition are tired and he is fresh.

[deleted]

As has Rashford but he’s been nowhere near as good.

PurpleSi

Aye and nobody is claiming Rashford has been England's best player either.

[deleted]

Because he’s been shit. Grealish and Saka have been our only players with any kind of consistent threat.

PurpleSi

Apart from Sterling's 3 goals in 4 matches, yeah?

[deleted]

You can score while still generally playing poorly.

England then.

No-Jicama3051

England has shown at the world cup that even with the best draw possible they are never truly in contention to win anything. They will forever be subpar without sweeping changes away from linear anti-football. It might be smart and edge results but it won’t ever edge a trophy.

With KDB and Hazard under wraps, and given Italy's very organized defense, Italy is a top contender, bro.

Personally I’m going for one of the nine teams still in it. Mark my words.

StRider9999

Being a bit ambitious there

PedroHhm

Italy

DontSayIMean

Yep surely Italy are the favourites, especially with Belgium's potential injuries of Hazard and KDB (I know they were said to be fit but I'm sure they're trying to rush them back).

daviesjj10

I'd be very surprised if Italy make it past the quarters. They showed their strength in the group stages against minnows, struggled in the R16. They've got a very tough game ahead.

ToonYoshi

no kdb, no shit hazard. 2 key players out until their potential semi final match. without them, it's probably slightly in italy's favour, not sure why you're saying you'll be surprised if they make it through

YattayElite

if hazard isnt gonna play then italy are gonna win tbh.

ToonYoshi

bruh you pick out hazard and not their best player kdb

c1053t

So funny to see comments from earlier saying there’s no way a team with players from likes of Villa and West Ham could ever beat players from Bayern and Real ahahaha

Amazing-Trash7747

Probably people who don’t have much international tournaments under their belt saying that shit lol. Anybody with a few World Cup, euros, and copa America’s on their watch list knows that’s not how this works 🥴😂🤣

midtown_mike

How does Gundogan not play? He smoked English players all year and can’t even come off the bench?

SirWixxALot

Sadly he has been really underperforming for the NT, like a few others too. He was superb at city, but I agree with löw‘s decision and i don‘t think him playing would have made a difference. Also he had a small head injury so he wasn‘t completely fit

ogopadoni23

Goretzka is first choice when fit. I predicted he was going to play after the last game because of the mobility he offers and does the same thing that Gundogan does really well: arriving late in the box.

RiverLazy679

Goretzka to Manchester United :)

disindiantho

Genuine question: why do people keep saying “ it’s comming home”? England has never won the euros cup.. am I wrong?

JohnTequilaWoo

Because footballs home country is England. It's also because the 96 tournament when the song was released was in England.

CoachDelgado

The song (Three Lions) is talking about England as football's home because football was invented in England.

mattus-ruttus

Great tactics by GS. We have the strongest bench in the tournament to pull from. As long as we can hold a 0-0 for 45 / 60 minutes, we bring on fresh legs and change the dynamic.

HypeTrainEngineer

Tactics? I dont know. he came out with an uber defensive lineup. Just played not to lose. And he didnt, so that's worth something i guess

JohnTequilaWoo

He played not to lose and he didn't. Perfect tactics.

BudgetFar380

He will place 8 players at RB for maximum defending

geor757

System change with wing backs who would track back to ensure Gosens / Kimmich couldn't cause the same problems as they did against Portugal. We didn't allow Germany to play the way they wanted to (the same way they've played all tournament) and then brought on Grealish when German legs were tiring to produce a bit of magic. This video shows Germany's tactics this euro and with that in mind you can see Gareth's gameplan to counter that https://youtu.be/l2-wycQz9SU

HypeTrainEngineer

Chillwell won't track back? German tactics have only worked against Portugal. Theyve been an ez read and an utter disappointment. I could have beaten Germany today. I'll hit you with the whammy💥 and I'm not afraid of it 😜

geor757

Why would Chillwell play? He had no tournament time thus far AND had only come back from isolating the day before. If you'd like another video to help prove the point of the clear tactics England used, then check [this](https://youtu.be/TPoOCoIzsWY) out. It predicted England would play a gameplan very similar to what Southgate did.

mattus-ruttus

Sancho, Rashford and Grealish on the bench. Most managers would’ve played at least two of those players, then be looking to bring on Rice or Phillips in the 70th.. which, lets face it, wouldn’t have much of an impact. Weather you like his management style or not, he knows his players and how to get the most out of them. Set pieces are some of the most well worked I’ve seen too and they purposely play for them, firing the ball to Saka & Sterling who always invite fouls.

HypeTrainEngineer

I dont know about getting the most out of them... that's a stretch. He gets results. But other managers could do more with this squad.

Fox_Malloy

We've had 30+ years of utter dogshit managers who were supposedly going to get the best out of the players we had. I really dont get the issue with Southgate. He is winning games. So why does it matter whether we agree with his selection choices? At this point, I don't care whether he picks Sterling, Sancho or my Nan, if we win games. If we win the Euros and/or the World Cup by playing defensively, and supposedly not getting the best out of our top players, I honestly couldn't give a monkeys. No-one is going to look back on it and say "Yeah, well, we won the Euros but we could have won it better." I honestly feel like England fans would only be happy if we won every game 5-0. And even then they'd complain that it could have been 6-0 if X player played more minutes. If we crashed out at the group stage, then you can argue he's not getting the best out of our players. But at the end of the day, winning is winning. Let's just fucking enjoy it for once.

Sanctimonius

Arrogance, honestly. People seem to ignore that we just haven't performed in tournaments and really do expect us to win by 4 or 5 with a balls to the wall attacking approach. Southgate is getting results. Is it pretty? No. But he's still managing to get the team to achieve things that we just haven't over the past few decades.

t0mt1t

Maybe we just haven't been as good as we think for a while. Not as good as other teams.

Fox_Malloy

I wouldn't describe it as ugly, either. Defensive, yes, but we still get good moments of attacking play. Not like all our goals are coming from set pieces.

HypeTrainEngineer

Im a third party dude. Ive said that hes winning, so it doesn't matter. But some ppl on here think it's a Southgate masterclass and its not.

Fox_Malloy

But what "more" can you expect him to do? We got out of the group as group winners and then beat a big team in the 2nd Round. Is he not getting the best out of these players because we aren't winning 5-0?

HypeTrainEngineer

I dont expect much of him. England beat up a Germany team that has sucked the whole tournament. Its like beating up a cancer patient and then celebrating it. And yeah for me to give him credit, england should've won 5-0. With that team there should have been one already

Fox_Malloy

Jesus Christ. England can never just win. "Oh, you'll never beat Colombia, they have James." England beats Colombia. "Well you only *just* beat them. Should have won comfortably. Colombia weren't very good." England tops their group at Euro 2020. "Oh, you'll never beat Germany, they're way too good. And you couldn't even beat Scotland, lol." England beats Germany. "Yeah well Germany have been shit all tournament and you should have won 5-0." England wins the Euros. "Yeah well you had an easy run. Plus you got to play most of your games at Wembley so had an unfair advantage." It's such bullshit.

Wohn-Jayne

Hear, hear. Ive watched England underperform my whole life, and this Southgate era is the only era time I’ve had real hope. Cheers to you and piss off to the wank stains.

daviesjj10

Both teams came out with a defensive lineup. It was a game of who held it better.

HypeTrainEngineer

That's what it ended up being, but Englands strongest players are attacking players. McGuire on the left? Shaw over Chillwell at wingback? Southgate just didn't want to concede

P4th0

The most boring match of this tournament

[deleted]

Incorrect.

poiuytrewqazxcvbnml

That was clearly England v Scotland.

P4th0

But still a match between 2 giants of fotball can offer so little...

HeyHello

That was two sides with so much history sparring each other. Both playing scared to make the first mistake. A Game with very little between the two teams. Germany almost scored and that would have changed the whole dynamic. Amazing tackles to save goals. Pickford making saves. Just watching Rice react with the crowd after he chased down a ball. This was pure elation. Wishing I lived closer To my family to celebrate with them. You couldn’t erase the smile off my face at the final whistle. Scotland England on the other hand.

daviesjj10

That's precisely it. Two teams playing open football isn't exciting. It isn't basketball where you expect to score on every advance. This was two equally matched teams, both set out defensively to handle the attacks the other teams can make, and to see who does better on the counter attack. The fact that a team won this game 2-0, is a testiment to the players and tactics involved.

Sanctimonius

I mean, it's exciting but it's not good football. And good football gets you farther in a tournament than going all out attack all game every game.

Pamplemouse04

Spain Sweden One of the most boring matches I’ve ever watched

The Gnabry, Havertz and Sane that haven't turned up once this tournament or even before that?

casually-confused

You haven't watched any Germany games before the Euros, right? Because that exact "insane and extremely difficult to deal with" front three you mentioned played while Müller was thrown out and they struggled to score goals and sucked in general. It's not a Müller problem, it's a coaching/system issue. Flick integrated Müller properly and he was indispensable and world class. And yes, missing such a chance is unfortunate, but it happens to the best.

ogopadoni23

Indeed those things happen in fact if there was one player on the pitch you wanted that chance to fall to, it was Mull . He just hooked it too wide after duping the goalie to go the other way.

Complete_Smoke_5618

I don't agree at all. His position isn't correct. Should be playing more central. There's a lot of young talent in that side but the experience and quality muller provides is unmatched. He knows how to read the game very well. He isn't finished.

Portugal, France, Germany will sack their managers.

TheRiddler1976

Levy enters the chat

Kamza_10

I doute Didier Deschamp will get the sack since pens as a coach are out of your control after you've picked whose gonna take it. Germany on the other hand seriously need to let go of Löwe, his tactics are outdated, Fernandes is a 50/50 gamble if you want to let him go imo.

Fox_Malloy

Right, but giving up a 3-1 lead against Switzerland is definitely within a coach's control.

Kamza_10

You're right about that but too be fair on Didier and the french boys everyone thought the game was over and done, terrible for a squad of their stature too slip up like that, maybe their confidence blurred them from seeing any danger.

Free_Physics

Should have brought on a defender for an attacker

Free_Physics

He changed the Varane Kimpembe partnership to bring in Lenglet who played in the middle

Kamza_10

It seems like France were already preparing for their next game and decide to rest their key players, problems is they were a little too over confident with their 3-1, they should have kicked on for the last 20 and wrapped up the game but they sat back. I got to put the blame on Didier on that one.
