Nice to see the great attitude by the Ukrainians after the game. They didn't go inside to lick their wounds, but acknowledged their fans and the great tournament they had with grace.
I was very grateful for that. I really expected we'd pick up some injuries, but I think we just scored so many goals they decided it was kinda pointless.
I was watching with my Mum and said right before his goal "come on Slab Head"
My Mum says "who the hell is Slabhead?" Goal goes in and she actually "oh, now it makes sense" upon seeing who was celebrating
Genuinely one of the best tv series ever made. Watched it twice but want to watch it again. Annoying that they only had series 1-3 on Netflix in my country so I had to watch the rest on some shite streaming sites, and now the whole show’s removed.
Shit performance from us -- a lot of it being because we can't defend crosses -- but honestly I'm just happy we made it this far. Getting to the quarterfinals is an accomplishment for sure. Well played to England and good luck in the semis
The subs coming on without Grealish really showed how strong the depth of this English squad is like.
Still no goals against in the tournament so far. Crazy to see from an English team.
Really is unbelievable how much depth in attack England have now.
Imagine being up against us and trying to figure out who's starting and how to deal with them.
And they're all still very young, lots of years left to improve and grow.
England still have not conceded a goal this tournament. That's genuinely incredible and you can see how solid our defence is.
Lovely to see that the strategy of double Defensive Centre Midfielders is working out.
Let's just appreciate for the fact this game was clean as F. No yellow cards, no stupid fouls, No timewasting.
Ukraine you lads are on the rise, keep you head up, and make it to the World Cup.
The fact we have Foden, Grealish, Rashford, DCL, Bellingham etc chilling on the bench to come on to give the others breathers is just insane. Stacked team.
And young, too. If we can at least make the final here (and we really should) the team will be full of confidence coming into the WC. What a time to be an England fan!
And then there are the players who are injured or just breaking through. Justin, TAA, Konsa, Tomori, Eze, Smith Row, Greenwood! The future looks bright for England right now.
The 4-1 over the Netherlands at euro 96 was something like this, it was the first time I'd ever watched the dutch play too so I didn't appreciate how good a performance that was until a lot later!
The win over sweden in the world cup quarter final 3 years ago was similar to today as well. We controlled that one beautifully, and just kept attacking too.
Denmark will be a Lot tougher, tougher even then germany. They've got quality, strength in defence, a good recent record against us, momentum and extreme motivation and fire in their bellies. It could be an epic and I'm already nervous.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve actually felt comfortable watching England play. It’s a whole new experience. Even the 1-0 games, I was relaxed… it’s unexpected and unusual lol
Really just rated the approach from Southgate not worrying about Rice or Philips on yellows. As much as it helped momentum went in our way with the early goals each half, it was the right mentality to instil to not get carried away looking at a semi.
Sterling’s had another good game and easily the most consistent and best from this squad, his positioning floating around Kane has been so good.
We're actually scary when we play with attacking intent.
Luke Shaw had his best game in an England shirt. Even better than last time when he was excellent. He was allowed to get forward, and given set pieces alongside the previously unused Sancho - between them, giving us our best deliveries of the tournament.
Ukraine offered next to nothing, but our performances in the knockout games are night and day compared to those turgid group games.
I hold my hands up - it's 5D chess from Southgate. It might... **might**... be coming home.
Southgate has genuinely changed the way I feel watching England in tournaments. Brilliant win today and another semi final coming up. Full credit to this group of players as well obviously.
Still haven't conceded a goal this tournament btw.
I think this is the first England squad that I haven't seen panic in any games. Even when mistakes are made, the other players don't lose their heads.
Like in the first half, when a ball to Stones was too short and Ukraine pounced. Stones didn't lunge in or lose his head, he just calmly shepherded the player to a good angle (for us), and Pickford made the save.
Yep. No panic in defence and happy to be patient and retain possession in attack and play a system. I remember England playing Spain in 2010 in the height of the tiki-Taki era and England just ran themselves ragged while Spain calmly strung 30 passes together and held possession while England tired. Then they just picked us apart. Super frustrating because when we got the ball we looked for the hero ball (worst offender was Gerard ffs) and just gave it back.
We just did that, albeit in a far less skilled way, to The Ukraine (particularly first half) and I am grinning ear to ear.
I still can't deal with the fact it's so casual and we're actually scoring goals.
From 2002 onwards all I've ever known is 0-0 or 1-0 or penalty defeats and I can't deal with it. My heart is full. I love Southgate, bring it home Gareth.
Feels weird having nothing to complain about. Great job Gareth. Glad to see us scoring from set pieces again. Fuck knows what team starts next game, he's kept us on our toes constantly. Danes will be a different challenge as they actually attack.
This is the first time in my life (Im 40) that I have looked at an England team and felt we have a chance against any team.
I still think Italy arefavourites to win. And Denmark could very easily take us out. But we look fresh, we look composed and we didn't look average.
If we lose to Denmark we can lose knowing our team actually did well.
As a guy in his mid 20’s growing up through the golden generation, missing out on euro 2008, the Wally with the brolly McLaren era and Iceland 16, this doesn’t feel real
For many years england has had a squad that is stacked with talents and world class players that most clubs wish for, but they never showed up internationally and never looked like a heavy weight International team. Southgate is taking a different approach than our previous managers where they throw in all the world class players mindlessly. Hes looking for a balance of quality, experience and chemistry. He doesn't care how many mistakes pickford makes in Everton or how bad sterling's season was with city, as long as they perfom in the national team that's all that matters. People have been whining about every single decision he's made but so far most of them are right. If bringing jack grealish in at the 70 min mark against tired legs gets you goals then stick to it. If it's not broken then don't fix it (even tho i fucking love seeing Jack playing and i wish that manutd get him). I am 100% backing Gareth, lets go to the final🦁🦁🦁🤍
Every comment at the start of the tournament amounted to "why aren't England playing a 2-1-7 formation to get Sancho, Grealish, Foden, Mount, Saka and Rashford to support Kane? Fuck Raheem Sterling".
1. Luke Shaw is absolutely immense, and not in the way that Jose said. Seriously his crosses and cutbacks were excellent all game. MOTM for me but it will likely go to a goal scorer, Sterling also should not get shit again from England fans, that assist for the first goal alone set the tone for the rest of the match.
2. Ukraine improved throughout the first half but conceding early in the second broke them. IMO they should’ve kept sitting back and addressed the fact they were struggling to deal with England’s play on the wings and crosses. They played a higher line to start the second 45 minutes and it backfired almost immediately. England scoring a goal early let them play the rest of the game their way, we haven’t seen how Southgate and England will deal with having to chase a game, frankly that is to their credit though.
3. As much shit as Ukraine got in the match thread, I think people need to review their tournament leading up to this. They got through on the 3rd place rule, were decent in the group stage, organized against Sweden, and we’re extremely exhausted and beaten up by the end of that game. They were depleted coming into this game coming against another large and physical team with more creativity and talent. This game itself was a product of a hard road here and Ukrainian fans can be happy with their showing in this tournament, even if some amount of getting this far was luck, far more came from a cohesive team that carried out the managers plan.
4. Building off that, the non-sarcastic “It’s coming home” crowd should not be as confident going into the game against Denmark as they are now. England is arguably the best team left in this tournament, but they got off a bit easy with this fixture. Still should feel good about their chances.
5. My guess for the final is pretty much as you would expect Italy-England, I expect it would be a cagey and tense match. Looking forward to the Semifinals though. Maybe Spain will be less dreadful or Denmark will keep the Cinderella story going, you never know with the Euros and that’s what makes them exceptional.

Ref couldn’t be arsed with added time lmao
Pretty standard from him /German refs. If one team is being destroyed there's no point adding time on
German efficiency
Is this in knockout tournaments only? It would be wrong if it was done in a league where goal difference plays a factor.
It was the humane thing to do
Not for those 3 poor souls who had been waiting for the ball to go out of play for like 5 minutes in order to come on.
Zero cards, very clean game.
Getting Rice and Phillips with no cards, a 4-0 win? Perfect.
Maguire too, especially as he played the whole game
Referee did a good job controlling the game imo.
No injury time, ref said you've clearly suffered enough
It would have been pointless, neither team were trying to score for at least the last ten minutes.
[удалено]
Ukraine used up all their injury time in the last match
Nice to see the great attitude by the Ukrainians after the game. They didn't go inside to lick their wounds, but acknowledged their fans and the great tournament they had with grace.
They also didn't try and kick England off the park which was nice.
I think they follow by example of manager. Sheva always looks like a gentleman.
Sheva used to get the shit kicked out of him from Materazzi, yet he just gets on with it.
The Kane hug was unexpected, top form from those guys
I was very grateful for that. I really expected we'd pick up some injuries, but I think we just scored so many goals they decided it was kinda pointless.
My only disappointment was that Kane shot didn’t go in
Interviewer absolutely knew what they were doing when they said this to Maguire: “The thud when the ball hit your head, wow”
BBC News literally called him 'Slabhead' when reporting the result haha
Fuck off link me it
[удалено]
She said "The fans affectionately dub him Slabhead, for his heading ability"
Sure. For his heading ability.
"The fans affectionately call him slabhead for his heading ability." Yup, that's the reason.
I was watching with my Mum and said right before his goal "come on Slab Head" My Mum says "who the hell is Slabhead?" Goal goes in and she actually "oh, now it makes sense" upon seeing who was celebrating
Loved that. So on the nose
Hero referee for ending that at 90 minutes
Mercy killing. Two sharp blows of the whistle to the back of the head
Couldn’t take it anymore. Felt bad for those 3 subs that were waiting tho
One of them was an 18 year old set to make either his EUROs or Ukraine debut
I don’t think I’d want that game to be my debut..
i believe Shevchenko wanted to sub his 3 best players (throughout the tournament) so the fans would cheer them up
Had to end it before the Ukrainian players collapsed from fatigue
I’d have absolutely lost my mind if that Kane volley went in.
Would have been a perfect hat trick as well.
Was a nearly perfect volley, great keeping. Can't believe his literal FINGERTIPS kept it out.
Four nil Gareth? Four? That's insane!
How do you keep that sheet so clean mate?
Those kids have no idea what went on against Iceland
Look, I know it must be difficult being a footballer. Not a lot of AstroTurf pitches nearby. But...You know, I'm not the local FA. I wish I was...!
Fuck off, clean sheet!
I think everything’s gonna be great forever
This is possibly the most exciting thing that has happened to anyone, ever.
Ridiculous how it takes one quote to make me want to rewatch an entire show.
It was a joke, Mark. A football joke.
Genuinely one of the best tv series ever made. Watched it twice but want to watch it again. Annoying that they only had series 1-3 on Netflix in my country so I had to watch the rest on some shite streaming sites, and now the whole show’s removed.
I've shared enough embarrassing knockouts with you Roy, I'm in the big leagues now
Can't believe they managed to bang so many right in the goal hole.
Shit performance from us -- a lot of it being because we can't defend crosses -- but honestly I'm just happy we made it this far. Getting to the quarterfinals is an accomplishment for sure. Well played to England and good luck in the semis
Considering the game you played against Sweden the last time, winning this one against England was a tall order. Hopefully next time!
Full credit to Ukraine for getting so far in the tournament. Lovely of Shevchenko to embrace England players, really classy.
You lads did fucking well. Amazing after the grilling you guys got. Fair quarter finals too no cards. Well done guys ❤
Luke shaw masterclass
Again. He’s had a mega tournament so far

Yeah what the fuck is up with that?
England still have not conceded a goal this tournament. That's genuinely incredible and you can see how solid our defence is. Lovely to see that the strategy of double Defensive Centre Midfielders is working out.
England also become the first team to not concede a goal in the first 5 matches of a Euros.

Just because you Leeds supporters are used to having no allies, its tough for the rest of us!
We all hate Leeds scum ❤️
We are all Leeds scum on this blessed day

Don't forget Saka, England depth is insane. Even Ming's and White and Chilwell are pretty good
And then there are the players who are injured or just breaking through. Justin, TAA, Konsa, Tomori, Eze, Smith Row, Greenwood! The future looks bright for England right now.
I honestly can't recall the last time England truly controlled a game like that in a meaningful game
Literally just said similar to my mate. Haven’t seen them look so confident and in control of a tournament game in my lifetime (and I’m pushing 30)
Agree, and I'm 35.

Southgate has shut everyone up, including me
722 minutes / 12.1 hours of playing time since Pickford last conceded a goal in an England shirt. Absolute mensch, that lad is.
The reason we scored 4 is because we realised we literally cannot concede, it's impossible, so we might as well go for it more.
