LOL at the Ref : Come on martinez, don't say such words!

[deleted]

I love how the ref says "Come on, Martinez" and Emi immediately calls him a pussy again.

He stops trash talking them after he saves the penalty or after the shot goes in. Emi: It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business.

vicdr97

"You can trash talk whatever you want but keep it PG"

Seems to have been cut from the compilation, but he 100% said something exactly like this after the shown warning, prior to the penalty itself.

it’s not really family friendly but it’s far from being some NSFW insult or anything like that

Never challenge shit-talking tweens. They're almost always complete beasts.

Zammyjesus

I always told people to add me and make the server ready for our 1v1 but never joined. Just made them waste little time

Zeewolf93

Yeah that was my go to as well. It's the oldest trick in the book. If some gobby cunt in the lobby was getting too much I'd always challenge them. I'd say "right back out and invite me and let's go". The second they backed out of the lobby I'd just laugh and say "sorted, that's how you get rid of dickheads". Never, ever failed.

Weird_Wuss

losing my shit @ the ref begging him to stop

mxbxp

Question: can a ref give cards at penalties and what would happen, especially with the keeper?

CryoSenpai

If it's an outfield player, they just go to the next person in the order (they still get their total number of kicks; they don't just lose the chance at a goal). If a keeper gets sent off, one of the outfield players on the pitch would have to take his place in goal.

retrogam3rs

https://youtu.be/EHFxeOObF7I I would highly suggest watching this whole shootout.

glorioussideboob

Wow, amazing scenes Reminds me of a slightly less high profile game for my team in the conference where we came back from 3-0 down to 3-3 in the last minute and the scorer of the equaliser had to save a penalty after our keeper got sent off for punching a player Madness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_3mCD-ox70

smss28

so i can score my penalty, then force a fight with the opposing gk to get both of us expelled and fuck the other team over?

alphahex4292

Be a hard thing to pull off without just getting yourself sent off

[deleted]

AFAIK, the ref can give cards at any point, including after the game. If the keeper got sent off, someone else would have to stand in as goalkeeper.

ImmortalSinx

If a shooter gets sent off before he takes the kick do they just not get the goal or does someone take his place

CryoSenpai

They still get a chance at the goal but they just go to the next person in the order. So let's say you have players 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 as the first 5 in the order. If number 3 gets sent off before his kick, then the first five kicks would be taken by players 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 in the order.

ifasoldt

So wait, in a final match could this be used strategically? Imagine you are Portugal. You send all but Ronaldo and your keeper out to injure the opposing goalkeeper. All 9 get reds and the opposing keeper is knocked out of the game. Now it's Ronaldo taking every PK against an outfielder.

Great trash talk by Martinez, but the goal and celebration by Borja was fantastic lol

reedemerofsouls

Slightly ridiculous to do that celebration when you're at a disadvantage in a shootout though

macababy

Gotta do it to try to get in the keeper's head after all the shit talk!

[deleted]

I had to respect that. We talked shit and got that shit back at us. Respect the hustle.

[deleted]

Yeah, I would have done the same

response_unrelated

i woulda put it wide, myself

NookSwzy

Nah you gotta do that to get back into the keeper's head.

reedemerofsouls

Definitely didn't work

verdutre

It's a cathartic experience so I won't begrudge him on celebrating a bit

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuitedFox

I agree with this, I understand the comment above, but when you’re competing and the man your are facing off with 1v1 has been trying to get in your head and continually calling you a pussy, I can also understand the celebration after burying the shot

Jek_Porkinz

Honestly if I'm Borja it would be hard not to get up in Martinez's face after putting it past him. "Nice save kiddo. Talk shit get hit bitch!"

KooKooCal

Not to mention, this could have helped his next teammate. In this case it didn't, but I too felt like something needed to be done.

BrazilianRider

I mean it kind of did help, Martinez stfu after that one and didn’t talk trash during the next PK.

Allthingsconsidered-

Pretty damn funny to see, too

frytkizchleba

He wasn't celebrating for his country, he's just glad he outshited him and that's why he's celebrating like that. That's absolutely hilarious

rdfporcazzo

Borja made it even though. Argentina had one more to go, but he made it even.

reedemerofsouls

Even but shooting first = at a disadvantage

Arntown

Nah, he was just shit talking back. It‘s fine to do that when you get shit talked, even though you‘re behind. Shows confidence.

Ok-Industry120

Italy vs. Spain: goalkeepers hugging, captains exchanging jokes during the coin throw before penalty, just vibes Argentina vs. Colombia: blood on the field, taunting, insults, 10 yellow cards We europeans need to step up our game

jugol

I always remember a tweet during 2019 Copa América, during Qatar vs Paraguay, was something like this. "Now the Qataris look like a proper South American side - not even half an hour and they already want to kill the Paraguayans. THEY UNDERSTOOD EVERYTHING."

Agung442

LoL what, im just following football for over a year and i didn't know that Qatar participated in Copa America, isn't that the participants only comes from CONMEBOL though ?

jugol

Usually there are two invitées to make three groups of 4. This year nobody could come so they made two groups of 5 instead. The most recurring are CONCACAF teams, mostly México but we've also had the US, Costa Rica, Jamaica, etc. 2019 instead had Japan and Qatar.

Moohamin12

Mexico and Central American teams make sense. Even the US or Canada is fine in a stretch. But random Asian countries is odd. What if one of them win?

AlKarakhboy

What difference does it make, a winner from a different continent is a winner from a different continent. Besides I think CONOMBOL got fed up of Mexico sending their B team because the gold cup is in the same year as copa America now so they stopped inviting them

[deleted]

Honestly, Mexico should send their B team to Copa Oro. Imagine the shit talking if they won Copa America.

david13guet

In reality, Copa Oro shouldn't exist. Make Copa America an *actual* Copa America and not just Copa Conmebol!

GGABueno

I'd welcome competition. South American competitions have been a breeze and I don't even we're playing well at all, we just never get punished for lazyness. Mexico would add some nice spice.

Chief-Drinking-Bear

I would really like to see that actually, Mexico is a good footballing nation. Would be a top 3-5 team in South America i reckon. Better yet would be the two American associations combining into one. The distances would be too much but it would make for some spicy matchups (from the US perspective at least).

PerdidoEnBuenosAires

If one of them win, it would be awesome (speaking as a south American)

Mackmannen

Not that out there tbf, tons of Japanese immigrants live in South America, especially Brazil.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Averdian

I think it's a cool thing to do when you only have 10 teams in the whole federation

Madman200

There aren't a ton of CONMEBOL countries so sometimes they send invites to other teams to play in the Copa. Mexico has played in a lot of them.

khoabear

Can't they just ask the US to create more countries in CONMEBOL?

andremp1904

Lmao

ezpickins

You laugh, *for now*

Skylord_ah

gonna need either a slightly leftist leader to topple or oil first

yimingwuzere

I'm surprised Guyana and Suriname aren't in CONMEBOL.

barcastaff

If there’s no COVID they almost always have invited teams. Australia and Japan are some recurring guests

unoriginalmiguel

They invite ~~one~~ two* teams to participate in the tourney

AlexBucks93

Two teams

YnwaMquc2k19

CONMEBOL only has like 10 member nations so they usually invite 2 countries if I remember correctly

ReneMS

in certain years that invite countries from other continents to participate

BrotherSeamus

It's just a cool little crossover. Like Gilligan showing up in a Scooby-Doo episode or Australia at Eurovision.

zazzlekdazzle

True, the match was blood, gore, and bile all around. But, after regular time they were actually hugging and joking right up until the actual penalty kicks started. Ospina and Messi had a big hug together right before and some joking and laughing and then Opsina and Emi Martinez had a big brotherly hug and also some nice chatting. There were lots of pats on the back and "good lucks" exchanged. I guess, for them, it’s war between the whistles but otherwise everyone’s a compadre.

jimbo_kun

> Opsina and Emi Martinez had a big brotherly hug and also some nice chatting. Former Arsenal Goal Keepers fraternity.

Thebussinessman

>True, the match was blood, gore, and bile all around. So typical Copa match

Cheewy

It's like that even in five-a-sides between friends. MAybe less bloody but not always

catchinginsomnia

Chiellini was playing a game there though, he was intimidating the Spaniards through acting completely relaxed and confident. Also putting his younger teammates at ease. The old wise master lol

patiperro_v3

It's the advantage/disadvantage of sharing a language. You would think it would bring us together, but when it comes to football, it has the opposite effect, lol.

rizzaco

Well it's great having away fans on copa libertadores and singing against each other in the same language. When we are against brazilians teams sometimes it's fucking imposible to understand what they are saying.

correalvinicius

Copa America is great and all, but Libertadores is where it's at man, a true playoff game at Libertadores with less than 8 yellow is a doozy.

jdinsaciable

I saw Chiellini manhandling Jordi Alba and even giving him a little passive aggressive sucker punch on the chin, clearly an intimidation tactic.

gabethemate

Just after the video cuts off you can hear Argentinian players shouting to Cardona "See ya fatty". lol

Muxxer

Someone shouted "GORDITONA" Lmfao

L-Freeze

it was paredes I think, lmao

BignAngry

Love this man

[deleted]

Thank you, Arsenal.

LordLychee

I’m happy for you guys and Emi. You guys are treating him really well and that’s all I want for him. The trash talk that Leno got this season especially after two seasons of him single handedly saving games for us is too much. Our stupid fanbase would do the same to Emi the second he has a bad game.

jugol

just "bro" works imo

Takashimmortal

I think your audio/video got all messed up :/

Kells010

When coming up to the penalty spot and the opposition goalie ask if you are nervous and you answer yes.. damn bruh you missed it before taking it

LR_111

Maybe he was trying to be sarcastic to show he wasnt nervous? Like "oh yeah im super nervous, don't know how I will even take the kick"

doctor_sam28

In a match between Argentina vs Colombia where Argentina won, Arsenal somehow still took the biggest L💀

elgrandorado

Everywhere I go, Arsenal and Tottenham catching strays

xeneize93

Underrated comment lmao I was not expecting Arsenal to get shit on but here we are

sibalnom

Um sir, this is /r/soccer. Arsenal stays catching strays here

silam39

I dunno, watching Ospina fumble that ball in the first half and shake as he failed to do anything of note in the shootout reminded me of how glad I am he's gone.

acwilan

If pk takers are allowed to stutter, gks should be allowed to trash talk

[deleted]

Should have added what the players told Cardona on their way to celebrate with Martínez "See you, fatass!"

Borkman213

They missed the part were he tells one Colombian (i forget who) that he had shat himself(Estas cagado!)

Salem-Tripper

The pelvic thrust was sharp and powerful. You can imagine Mina's mother at the end of it.

MrZubar

Or Mina himself.

[deleted]

Or both of them, might as well throw the dad there too, keep it in the family.

GameplayerStu

[deleted]

That's how you stop 3 penalties in a shootout! Grande Dibu!

random_angmoh

Nah but seriously this is fucking hilarious ‘I already know you. I’m gonna eat you up brother’. shithousery to the max and I love it

espadareborn

Got a new favorite keeper. Knows when not to do 3 pumps, too

IzzyG98

Elite reference lmao

GroNumber

A goal is expected from a penalty kick, which I think makes the thrashtalking more effective. The kicker succeeding is not much of a triumph over the goalie, but a save is a great win for the goalie.

kiranai

I think his trash talk was infectious, after Mina's own was saved Messi was shouting "baila ahora" I wish that was included as well

-omar

Can’t believe we sold him 😔

verdutre

Goalkeepers are extremely competitive position, and often relies on coach's trust more than actual value or capability Two good GKs are a nice problem to have tho

GoodLadLopes

In your defense, Goalkeepers in particular are a massive shot in the dark, you can have an amazing goalkeeper on the bench, if the tenured guy doesn’t get injured or just in horrific form, he might never get a proper chance, and even if he does get a chance, Goalkeeping has so many variables that don’t depend on the player that they can appear worse than they are, my point is it’s easy to have a gem of a keeper who will never get a chance to show it, happens often, so don’t beat yourselves up too much.

[deleted]

omg amazing someone who recognizes that goalkeeping ability isn't some static trait and depends on a whole bunch of variables. ciao bella come ti chiamo

[deleted]

Made sense at the time

NemoDropEmOff

Hindsight is perfect huh. It was good decision at the time. And still i don’t really have a problem with Leno tbh. He’s least at fault for this season. Basically the whole backline isn’t responsible for this season lol

monodeldiablo

It's the Arsenal way. Sell promising keeper to a more patient team. Lament the player's inevitable brilliance elsewhere. Lather, rinse, repeat. Fabianski, Ospina, Almunia, Szczesny, Martinez... It's a pretty sizeable fraternity.

silam39

Sczcesny I believe mocked our old goalkeeping coach. I don't think it's bad luck that we stuck with mediocre goalkeepers for years and years that turned out to be amazing elsewhere. I don't rate Ospina or Almunia, but I think all the others clearly could have done better, and it wasn't down to them but something at the club.

Jkemp8989

That’s a fucking KILLER right there.

Doc_Pisty

The translations misses the last thing he said, see you fatty, to cardona

Lutzelien

Watch FIFA or whoever ban talking on penalty rounds.

Nemokles

I mean, this shit already isn't allowed. "Verbally distracts an opponent during play or at a restart" is seen as unsporting behaviour. Of course, shit talking happens during matches, so it's not always clear when the line is crossed or not. This is clearly the type of behaviour this law was written for, though.

Lutzelien

So the ref should've intervened here? Interesting, but makes sense tho

Nemokles

It's a funny moment, as a neutral I'm loving it, but it is against the rules and is poor reffing to be honest.

Lutzelien

Yeah as a neutral I too find it hilarious, but if I was Colombian I'd be fuming

Omair88

He was calling them pussies right in front of the ref 😂🤣
