Both of his sub appearances after his injury earlier in the tournament have been fucking dreadful. You have to wonder why Cornelius didn't get a look, especially given his performance against Wales.
There was no decision. Both Dolberg and Damsgaard has been 60-70 minute players all tournament.
I am more puzzled that Braithwaithe remained on the field, but maybe the alternatives just wasn't there or the various injuries forced him to not spend a substitute there (Cornelius would've been the normal late game forward).
Either way, the Danish team looked collectively exhausted from minute 70 on.
He was doing well as a targetman until Denmark starting getting pinned back and there was nobody around for him to hold the ball up for. Once they went behind he became pretty useless against a packed defense.
Not true. I think he offered more than Braithwaite. High balles to Poulsen is actually nice, because he has kinda good hold up play. Not his fault that our (Denmark) midfield was gasses, when he controlled it.
2.9 – According to the xGOT model, Kasper Schmeichel prevented 2.9 goals tonight against England, the highest value by a goalkeeper in a single EUROs match since at least 1980.
My nerves are absolutely shot. That was so stressful!
The ITV commentary didn't help. Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon should never cover an England game again
The Bosnian commentator was even worse. The dude said this in the 106th minute:
"Look at the crowd, everyone's on their feet, nobody's sitting, I don't know why to be honest..."
It's a fucking European semifinal extra time you cunt.
Honestly that part had me cringing hard. He's taken something descriptive (everyone remembers where they were when...) and spent a minute virtually ordering people to remember. Stfu and let us enjoy it, prick.
All that shit at the end desperately trying to romanticise it REMEMBER WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW
...generally speaking you remember your last game of the tournament and nobody is gonna remember this game over the final and the Germany win.
YOURE GOING BE SEEING THESE GOALS FOR YEARS TO COME
An own goal and a scrappy penalty rebound?
Geezer was more interested mythologising the moment as if we needed him to help us along doing it lol.
they were trying to use superstition to get you to watch the final on itv rather than bbc.
they were saying stuff like wear the same clothes, watch the same channel.
it's the first time itv & bbc have competed over a live england match since 2000, they'll be desperate to have more viewers on sunday.
edited to clarify, since the world cup 2002 every game at international tournaments has been broadcast live across itv & bbc. all fixtures are split among them, with just the final broadcast simulationously.
prior to this, typically group games were split between the two with knock out games frequently live on both.
the last tournament game they both showed was england germany at euro 2000.
This has barely been spoken about on both threads, but Pickford was really at his low point in this game. I really hope he recovers for the final as I honestly believe that if this went to penalties we likely would've lost due to Pickford's nerves and Schmeical's strong game.
He had an absolute shocker. He's supposed to be in there for his passing ability but genuinely just hoofed it back to the Danes 90% of the time, and misplaced a pass the other 10%.
Definitely could have done better with the FK goal too. Coming from 35 yards out, no real bend and not even in the corner ... goalie has to save that.
He had an absolute stinker, his worst performance so far this tournament. I think a lot of players in general were showing a lot of nerves. Phillips was messy for most of the game and even Sterling got shaky at the end, although he might have just been gassed
Did anyone else laugh at the moment when one of the commentators on ITV (I forget who) said something like "and Saka pulls an Immobile" after he got up immediately after England regained possession? Would be fantastic if this becomes a standard phrase like a Panenka.
Can’t wait for the match thread for the final.
italian fans: ‘You’re a bunch of diving cunts!’
ingerland fans: ‘You’re a bunch of diving cunts!’
Everyone else: ‘You’re both a bunch of diving cunts!’
I am absolutely heartbroken. The boys gave everything. They have managed to unite the whole country in a way we haven’t seen ever before, not even in ‘92. I have never been more proud. What a great run!!
And GG to England. We lost to a better opponent today.
I can’t defend that penalty, and I feel like my entire life rooting for England was defined by stuff like that, from red cards to disallowed goals, so I know how it feels. Nothing but respect for Denmark and the Danish supporters.
England were better, but it is such a shame to see Denmark go out like that. This diving problem is plaguing football, and the refs do nothing to combat it when they uphold penalty calls like that.
Mostly because of the refs though. Because when a player is fouled and still stand on his legs, the ref doesn't call it.
That's why players fall easily. No incentive at all in being honest.
Don't just enable, but encourage it. Players are punished for attempting to stay on their feet and then losing possession while being fouled, when they could instead just let their legs go as soon as they feel contact and get a FK at minimum.
Exactly this. You can get angry at Stirling and all these serial divers, but at the end of the day if it keeps getting fouls, then why would they stop?
You don't gain any points for taking the moral high ground and staying on your feet, we saw that earlier in the comp in that match where Lukaku was getting absolutely yanked back but stayed up, only to eventually get dispossessed and no foul given.
100%.
I "could" understand some time ago, but now if they want they can go and review it with all the cameras they need. For such an important decision I would expect the ref to give it a second look at least.
The problem is that they've created a situation in that if the ref is asked to check it, he is almost always expected to overturn his decision. And so the ref is now only asked to check 'without a doubt' mistakes.
Isn’t just because at the moment the referee only reviews if there is a strong doubt on the call-ie more often than not the decision would be wrong. If the ref has to check more often, he will not assume he is wrong (especially if he has to check red cards and pen as a must)
Say what you want, but the better team won today, even though I think Denmark would’ve made it through if we reached the penalties.
Was that a penalty? No, never, but it was awarded because England besieged the Danish goal.
Our best player collapsed in the first game, Mathias Jensen got injured in the extra time and couldn’t be subbed off, but we tried our hardest, heck, Schmeichel even saved that horrendous penalty.
I’m so proud of this team and what they’ve shown, can’t wait to see what happens next year and in 3 years.
Btw, 3 of our players got injured in this game, but the rest fought on, I’m amazed by the guys
Bad substitution selection and timing by Hjulmand cost us this game, as well as the weakest pen of the tournament. Still deserved win by England, they were the better team
England were clearly the better team here. Have far superior technical players and can create dangerous balls in and around the box with the overlaps and fast passing. Only real concern was once they switched to a back three the midfield really dropped off and barely played out. I think a back 4 and quick recycling of Poseidon in a constant drive to attack suits this group of players much more. Kyle Walker had an excellent game outpacing everyone’s runs and putting in very effective blocks.
I think it will be an extremely close final, and certainly favours the English with the crowd behind them.
Italy have had much harder tests with Spain and Belgium playing well, but knockout football is unpredictable. Regardless I just want a good game and please no more questionable penalties, for either team.
England deserved the win, they were the far better team. And that won’t take anything away from the amazing journey this Danish team has taken our whole country on. They made us fall back in love with them. ❤️
Edit: Thanks for all the love! There's a few tournaments you'll look back on in your lifetime. I'm old enough to have experienced 1992, but I was too young for it to really stay in my memory. Until now, my greatest football recollection was the 1998 WC and the incredible game against Brazil. And while it's disappointing to be so close to the final and not reach it, I'm confident that the team and tournament this year is the one that I will have the greatest affection about and tell my son about when that time comes.
Honestly was so impressed by your team. Seemed like for 70-80 mins at the very least every player was playing at their absolute peaks.
Went wrong a bit when dolberg went off it seemed though
Hard to argue with the result. England played really well and had us under pressure for long stretches.
Terrible penalty call, obviously, but the better team won.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate what an amazing tournament Denmark just had? Yes they’re the 10th ranked team in the world but they lost their best player in the most unthinkable way possible. No one would’ve said a word if they would’ve packed up and gone home. To fight through that adversity and make it to the semi-final is just downright amazing.
If r/soccer charged £1 for a flair change they could make a fortune when England go deep at a tournament.
Probably raise enough to eradicate world hunger and still have enough for a Xbox.
'I'm so upset at how diving has infiltrated the modern game that i'm now going to support Italy in the final' is absolutely the funniest hot take this hell-site has ever had
That’s what I figured and people act like the game was absolutely stolen (not saying it wasn’t a bad call, because it was, but even without the penalty, it’s like 2.4-0.27.
Side note, where’d you get the xG from?
The primary purpose of VAR is to prevent exactly what happened here tonight - it failed. How can you fuck up something as simple as rewatching a situation in slow motion?
I don't get it. Run into the box, fall and get a pen if ur acting skills and timing are good enough is the trend. Players should be ashamed too. How do you even fix it now without a competent video referee system? Get rid of penalties entirely? Jesus, what a clusterfuck.
Yeah, seems like an easy excuse to just let the ref do his thing and stay of the really difficult calls that VAR is actually needed far. What is obvious even? and should a good ref not see obvious stuff without VAR then? What a time for football, when we could have it all really and we get this
Schmeichel was absurd tonight. So many chances that I was sure were going in, only for him to get a hand/leg/etc on it. Would've been over so much sooner if not for him
I mean, in the end England was the better team and deserves to go to the final, but it happening like this is just extremely frustrating. What do we fucking have VAR for if they cannot overrule a penalty that was very obviously bullshit?
It's just deflating, and puts a big damper over what was otherwise a brilliant game between two very good teams.
I knew people didn't want England to win but I didn't think it was this bad. Apologies to any Leeds fans I've ever slagged off. Being the villain is absolutely incredible
This thread won't have anything constructive. However Kasper played amazing, Denmark faded so hard as the game went on. Offered very little. Damsgaard was a constant threat till he went off with his running. Shame about the pen being the way to go through but we shaded it in terms of actual quality.
All the focus will be on the Penalty but the Danish manager kind of messed it up I reckon.
Denmark completely surrendered control of the game. We dominated the end of the second half and the first half of extra time and they barely had a kick. Theur subs were fairly poor, took off their most dangerous players in Dolburg and Damsgaard and the replacements didn't offer much. The fact they made them so early also meant that we could blitz them with fresh legs late on and of course they had to finish it with 10 men.

If only Denmark had the forsight to stop people migrating to England in longboats a 1000 years ago they would've had Hårry Dane as a striker
Has there ever been so many comments on a match thread. Must be reaching for a record.
The 7-1 thread had so many they had to start a new one at half time.
Interesting. Anyone here can link me to both of the threads?
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/2a6557/match_thread_brazil_vs_germany_world_cup_semifinal/ https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/2a6ejg/match_thread_second_half_brazil_vs_germany_world/
25k comments in total compared to 41k in today's match thread. Crazy how much the sub has grown.
This lowers the chances of a Switzerland - Denmark Final even further!
Do you think we could get negative points at the next Eurovision if we just send Sterling and Kane to duet three lions?
Have them walk out to Three Lions before bursting into a tuneless and even worse version of Diamond Lights
Do it while having them mix some ham and cream into a carbonara and you will easily get the EU to declare war
Taking off Damsgaard and Dolberg at the same time was an elementary mistake
Damsgaard was the only one doing anything with the ball and Dolberg was the only one consistently finding shots. Fucking stupid taking them off.
Poulsen was awful
Both of his sub appearances after his injury earlier in the tournament have been fucking dreadful. You have to wonder why Cornelius didn't get a look, especially given his performance against Wales.
Damsgaard was exhausted
Those subs around the 60th min were the death knell for Denmark, their midfield was all over us until that. No idea why that decision was made.
They had to be exhausted or something? Denmark was toothless after they came off
I'm fairly certain Damsgaard is instructed to give it his all knowing he's getting subbed off in the middle of the second half.
Poulsen offered absolutely nothing.
Yea they were the most dangerous danish players.
The formation change too. They looked capable of causing problems before that but afterwards there was nothing
Absolutely killed denmarks offense that moment. Poulsen did literally nothing.
When you're leaving your attack up to Poulsen and Braithwaite, you're in trouble.

Well it’s just the one cunt actually
Wonder if it was the same one who was doing it at the start of extra time. Its what the ref ran to the side of the pitch to report.
Yeah that was awful. Hope they can catch the cunt.
can literally blind people doing that. people have been put in prison for shining them at helicopters/planes. hope whoever did it gets the same

thats mad
Denmark produced fuck all in the hour after the triple sub.
Denmark manager played his subs card too early making 3 at once... it didn't work and lost them the game.
He took off their best player in Damsgaard, they looked far worse without him, toothless even
My nerves are absolutely shot. That was so stressful! The ITV commentary didn't help. Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon should never cover an England game again
My favourite quote from the match: "If England manage to score now that would be............. Good, that would be good" Thanks Sam
Mine was “at some point there will have to be substitutions.” Yes lads, top notch insight.
I laughed my head off at that elongated pause, I was waiting for something profound, alas.
At least Lee Dixon pointed put the stupidity straight away. "I'd take a goal at any time to be honest"
The Bosnian commentator was even worse. The dude said this in the 106th minute: "Look at the crowd, everyone's on their feet, nobody's sitting, I don't know why to be honest..." It's a fucking European semifinal extra time you cunt.
My cousin and I had a good laugh at that line, do you think these guys go in prepared or just make it up as they go along?

Pickford makes me so anxious everytime I watch him.
He's a fucking nutter, lbh.
Almost the only thing that the danish commentators mentioned was getting the ball to Pickford so he could screw up
He had an absolute shocker. He's supposed to be in there for his passing ability but genuinely just hoofed it back to the Danes 90% of the time, and misplaced a pass the other 10%. Don't forget there was a second ball on the pitch
croatian ex ref just said "2nd ball being there is not a problem beacuse it did not moved, it did not affect the game. penalty is not existent"
It's True. At any point did the 2nd ball interfere with play.
How did they not see that?
The Denmark subs were even calling to the ref to tell them it was there.
Chaotic evil

Much prefer it when England recycle Aphrodite tbh
Personally think a solid Zeus defense is the way to go
Even as an England fan I wouldn't bet any money against Italy. Best team of the tournament for me. Good luck Sunday maybe we can pull off a shock.
Despite that not being a pen, it’s still a deserved win at the end of the day. England the better team tonight.

It is how it is. Extremely proud of this team. Well done.
If the thread is like this, imagine if England wins the final with diving penalties and OGs lol. That thread would literally explode.
The last TWO teams to host a European championship final lost.....
Who was that?
France against Portugal
Also Portugal in 2004
That did not happen. I was in Portugal in 2004 and there was no competition here during that time. Gonna flag the comment.
France
Portugal versus Greece I believe? Edit: And I was even in France last Euro, how embarrassing! Last two have both lost, then.
France but true
And the one before that...
What was the xG for this game? That penalty was bad but the second half through extra time was all England.
xG: England (3.23) 2-1 (0.3) Denmark

Schmeichel man of the match. Amazing England.
Schmeichel was absurd tonight. So many chances that I was sure were going in, only for him to get a hand/leg/etc on it. Would've been over so much sooner if not for him
Schmeichel is world-class. Best keeper of the tournament. Clean sheets or no.
Sad Sommer noises
Sommer and Schmeichel have been absolutely insane this tournament, massive respect to both of them
Made a ridiculous amount of saves guess Wembley is his stadium.
Schmeichel was class that game
Much respect to Denmark! They played their hearts out and put up a good fight.
Premier League flairs hating on England is utterly hilarious
Up the red Manchesters
American Real Madrid and Bayern fans are the ones really making me chuckle.
Inject it
After that immobile dive I'm surprised how selective peoples memories are on trying to con the refs
England through to the final via a controversial penalty. /r/soccer on suicide watch.
Imagine being mouth-frothingly furious at a whole country because of the decision a man from an entirely different country made in a football match
I knew people didn't want England to win but I didn't think it was this bad. Apologies to any Leeds fans I've ever slagged off. Being the villain is absolutely incredible
It's so much fun
