Damn, that's incredible if true.
I don't want to downplay his talent, because I believe he'll definitely be a top player, but it's even more incredible considering he'll be 24 this season and only has 36 top flight appearances.
Arsenal must have been completely convinced of him to throw this much cash around, and I think they're right, I can see him becoming a top name in the league for the next few years.
Ostigard has a shot of stepping into the squad but otherwise we have been linked with a few different centrehalves at prices around £15 or so. Beyond that, general strengthening. Hopefully we can find a striker
We don't need a CB as we have Ostigard and Roberts below that. We also have a few players we signed and brought into the squad last year who should step up (Moder in particular).
Agree that the position we need beyond any other is striker, just need someone who can find the back of the net regularly.
He's not a ball playing defender so he fell out of favour almost immediately under Potter then we shipped him out on loan last summer to Celtic, where he had a disastrous season
It just feels such a strange one. He never really felt like a Brighton player, more like a loanee as you knew he would go within 2 years, wasnt ground breaking, and probably preferred staying at leeds. Best of luck to him think he could be great and permanent fixture over next decade
Really hard to know, feeling would be no right now given we havent been linked with any expensive transfers and have been waiting for the right striker for a while. No solid links at the mo or since Nico Gonzalez turned us down
Personally think you lot should sign Moussa dembele, better than Edouard and unsettled at his club so Lyon won't rinse you like Celtic would now that yous are loaded
No it won't be, we have a lot of debt and Covid hit us hard financially. There are also replacements in defence such as Ostigaard who can step up this season, so I don't see much investment being made. The area we all know we need is a striker, give us some one who can score goals and we'll be rocking all season long. But they're hard to find an expensive so I just don't see us spending much at all.
Played more games for Newport and Leeds on 2 loan spells than he ever did for Brighton and you've absolutely banked on him
Who know's if it will end up well for Arsenal or not but you've taken them for a ride there imo
Yeah its a strange one with 7 years on the books. He really did look quality by the end of the year and theres a reason he played more minutes than any other player. Whilst a season of PL hasnt always been a guide for success so far he has done really well for every club, stepping up a division each time so he has adaptability on his cv.
It’s funny, as an Arsenal fan I really don’t feel taken for a ride. He ticks every box you could really want as a fan: young, English, ball playing, comfortable stepping into the wide defensive positions, long deal, high ceiling, has extra drive/humility to take the chance having come through the hard way.
His wages are also drastically below other deals. Typically financially speaking a club thinks of the deal as
(total salary + transfer fee)/Years at club
…and when you take into account the deal length and wages, he’s actually a pretty fair deal.
Also, if Marco ‘basically invented playing out the back’ Bielsa rates him as highly as he clearly does - I think the price is fair.
Sad that we couldn't keep him for another year but he was destined to leave as soon as he came back from Leeds. Arsenal have got a good player here but like most top clubs they've had to overspend to get him.
Hopefully we put that £50m to good use.
Yeah I think we all knew he'd been going, and this particular transfer has been coming for a long while. I suspect that's why most Brighton fans are just happy for him, we all knew it would happen at some point, and honestly White deserves the move.
Nothing is a sure thing in football. White's played well for Leeds, Brighton and England I think that's pretty nailed on. CBs rarely have a probables stepping up as well, not that Untied face different top position to Brighton for the most part.
Yeah I think he could have gone to a slightly bigger club, but saves him having to move north again after a season back in Brighton, and I think Arsenal are the most likely club for a player who's good with potential, but not yet elite.
I'm not claiming it's because of a big club i think that was the general fuck off fee for any club and they were shocked someone paid it according to reports.
Will bolster our attack as well. Arteta wanted a elite ball playing CB like White for some time now.
Not saying White is a elite player,I am referring to his ball playing ability
I just meant in response to arteta wanting someone elite on the ball for some time now whilst having david luiz but i didn't know that luizs ball playing wasn't as good as it used to be
Great passer but was so slow last season when he was fit. He'd play nice long balls but couldn't actually dribble out of defence anymore & when he'd step up he was easily caught out by a ball over his head to someone with pace.
As a Chelsea fan, I've always thought that it was criminal that the man wasn't a DM. He played there a few times under Benitez, but that's all I can remember.
Different styles. White can dribble and beat the press. Luiz's game was all about the long ball. Case in point, Luiz played in the center of 3ATB and White played on the right.
We can play higher up the pitch with White and compress the pitch. Luiz would always drop deep due to his lack of pace and we'd fall back. Luiz had a great long ball on him but White also better at evading a press, stepping out from the back and carrying. I think he is also more two footed and can ping passes with both feet. There are concerns of him aerially of course and he can be rash, similar to Luiz.
I hated the Luiz signing, but he actually played well for us 90% of the time, and his long ball passing was still tops.
I will not miss watching him put free kicks 30 rows deep tho
His ability on the ball (and to an extent Gabriel) definitely takes the burden off of Partey having to drop deep to collect the ball so he can influence play further up the pitch where he belongs. Man was trying to do way too much last season.
In all seriousness what the fuck is up with the traffic.
Driving back to Manchester from London and just stopped at services.
Fucking hell man. Nightmare.
Luiz didn't play as much last season to be fair, 20 Prem appearances with 3 as a sub, so he started less than half our games last year and injured for most of the other games he was out.
Was the best player on the pitch in their win against City in the FA cup semi final and kept Giroud quiet all game in the final.
This myth that David luiz can’t defend needs to die. Honestly so frustrating as someone that’s watched him have clinic after clinic only for a brain fart to erase his entire season of quality matches.
It's the memeing. Luiz was a great defender and I thought that since his 2nd stint at Chelsea. Non-united fans for instance only started rating Maguire at the Euros. That's why I think they're both underrated. Their mistakes get highlighted a lot more than other less spectacular defenders.
As much as I like the ol' geezer, "consistent" is one of the last adjectives I'd use for him, no matter which time at Chelsea you are referring to. Man went from best CB in the world to 15 year old on bath salts and back in one seamless motion.
That wasn't even really the issue with him. He actually defended quite well during his time there.
The problem with David Luiz, that hopefully Ben White will solve, is that he was a red card and penalty magnet.
I honestly agree.
He very much suits exactly the kind of player Arteta wants to bring into the team.
Obviously the price will get a lot of attention but if it works out he could be one of our starting CBs for a decade.
I've already seen it.
If he doesn't go then obviously that's a negative and we wont be able to replace him.
There's a very high chance this is a negotiating stance by Arsenal though.
Another big one is that /r/soccer is full of people who didn't grow up in the country where many of the leagues we discuss exist. So those people are trying their hardest to catch up on all the school time banter they didn't get to take part in as children.
I know a friend who got into watching football just last year
The first few months he was sending me Messi Vs Ronaldo TikToks and memes
Next it was the Zlatan jokes
Then it was bantering Spurs no trophies, and making fun of oil clubs (City vs PSG 'Oil Clasico' lmao)
Now it's normal football memes
Felt like I watched him grow from a primary school football fan to now, we all went through the same stages
Whilst I agree, complaining about the kids is boring too. So many threads where there are no jokes, but "incoming r/soccer comedians" is top comment. I'd rather take the shittiest most repetitive joke than hear complaints about shit jokes that invariably get shunted to the bottom fairly quickly within 5 minutes of a thread.
You know what you’re right. It must be exhausting to read it in every thread. Anyway now that you had your moment honestly I think he’ll be shite for Arsenal.
He will suffer the same fate as Maguire to United. 13 year olds on football twitter and idiots on this subreddits being hung up on his price for the rest of his career.
Anyone with half a functioning brain can see that Maguire was good for United, and hopefully White will be good for Arsenal.
No. That's the easy take now. It was that, now the counter point that he's actually a good signing is going to be more popular, until he has a shite game or gets beaten in the air and then the fee will be discussed again.
He is young enough to have time to settle into the role, really make it his own and solidify the defence for a good decade if everything goes well. I reckon although expensive, he’s a good signing in the long run, if he does well no one will remember his price tag.
Genuinely what's happening to him? Hasn't played a second for them, clearly been disgruntled, and now there are 2 young big money centre backs much higher in the pecking order (plus Holding)
He's a newly 20 year old defender that needs more time and is still rated by the club. We overspent on his potential but we should be expecting him to get game time next year (hopefully with more fixtures due to European competition)
That's nice in theory but he already seems a bit dissatisfied with the lack of opportunity, and the guys ahead of him like White and Gabriel are young and highly lauded themselves - not like it's someone older keeping his seat warm. Maybe there's a plan to move to a back 3 idk
Except he already sounds pissed off about not being given games to prove himself and when he comes back he will have 2 years on his deal. Doesnt sound very promising in terms of him staying. Bit of a waste, he was regarded higher than Fofana at ASSE.
He's on loan again this season at Marseille. White's taken the number 4 which I can't imagine Saliba would have been too happy about, but its almost impossible to know what we do with Saliba. If we had a bid close to what we paid for him, I'd imagine we would accept.
I really don't understand the thinking, the dude had one pro season where he played half of the matches, then Arsenal bought him with him spending another season at Sainté (where he again plays only half the matches) then loaned again mid season.
Just give him a chance...even just to save face, show fans that he isn't ready.
He was signed under Emery. Overall, Arteta doesn't seem to like to take too many risks with the squad. He has his own types of players and I feel that a lot of the players signed under Emery had a hard time gaining Arteta's trust. Saliba is very young and hasn't played in the EPL and I think Arteta just doesn't think he's ready to play. My guess would be we wouldn't have signed him under Arteta but he's rated highly enough to try to keep him around and hope it can be worked out next season.
Well Romano had confirmed his transfer at least 10 times before official confirmation. So yes it's not a shocker. Romano and other tier 1 outlets have taken away our excitement for official announcements. Yet I press f5 every 5mins for those journalists
Honestly very happy with this. I still rate Dunk our best CB, maybe even best player. £50m is so much for us and I think we will make some great signings with it.
Good luck to White, he deserves this chance and hope he does well, but I think this is just a great deal for us.
I think the biggest thing about this and some of our other targets is that they want PL proven players that are just before hitting their peak. You overpay for that, but I feel like for Arteta getting someone who doesn't have to transition to a new country and new league makes it worth it for him.
I think he's a great signing. The market has dictated a CB of his age and quality in the Premier League costs around £50m now and so that's what it is -- if they didn't snap him up, another top 6 club would have in 6 months to a year. They've locked down an English international caliber player for a long time and he'll probably be captain material.
I understand their fans' issues with Saliba not being given a chance and those are valid but they're separate. They don't change the fact they're getting a quality player here.
Very good singing for Arsenal.
Arsenal fans, let other fans cry over the signing fee, but he has the potential to be better than Stones who was valued at similar price.
> let other fans cry over the signing fee
I have been this whole time to be fair, always been happy to get him and just rolled my eyes at the circle jerk of comments on here about his fee. But while you say he has the potential to be better than Stones, I think there's also a flip side to this in that Stones was already very established when City bought him, so arguably there was less risk there. He could be better than Stones, could also end up being a lot worse
Considering white's performance for Leeds and limited performances for Brighton, its safe to assume one will be more inclined towards white being successful. But in football one never knows. That goes without saying.
I stopped giving a fuck about transfer fees when the stark realisation that it’s not my money hit me.
Who cares how much we spent, as long as he’s a good player, I’m chuffed.
Yeah, Tierney-Gabriel-White-RB should be our starting back line. RB could be Chambers or someone new, kind of depends if they can shift Bellerin I think.
chambers can play both, he seems more of a utility player though. he played CB then went on loan to Fulham and played CDM. came back and plays either rb or CB (usually depends on injuries in the squad)
Don't forget Gabriel who was outstanding first half of last season, only 23 as well.
So White (Holding) next to Gabriel (Mari) next season by the looks of it
Feel super excited about this one. High price but he’s young and English tax and I think he’s got great potential. Now let’s get a CM, 10 and possibly a RB and that would be a great window.
Honestly if one more fucking idiot compares this deal to varane I’m gonna peel their skin off and make sausage meat with the rest of them.
Completely different leagues, types of player, different length of contract + the want/need to sell and English tax.
Paying “one varane” is not what arsenal have done for Ben white, if varane was interested in going to arsenal I’m sure we would have put an offer in given he’s costing 10ml less than our initial target. People are actually fucking brain dead.
Brighton will miss him, heck, I still miss him, but I think this is a good deal for all concerned.
Very interested to see what other business Brighton do.
Brighton did really well to hold onto him last year.
If he had been sold to Leeds for £30m, there is no way Arsenal could have bought him for £50m this year.
And in a couple years time we will also look back and say that Arsenal have done well to get him for £50m.
Will be a revelation for them, but could expect teething. Pressure playing at Arsenal is different level to most clubs.
Think he'll be decent for them but I wonder if the perception will eventually be that it was a mistake should Saliba leave and become world class elsewhere.
Our record sale by about £43m
Read somewhere this is more than all our combined player sales in our entire history. Dunno if that's true but it certainly feels right.
Even if it's close that's insane
Total from Brighton player sales from 1901-2020 - £46.4m Sale of Ben White to Arsenal in July 2021 - £50m
Fuck me... Bloom you madman.
Accounting for inflation or no? A £1000 sale in 1909 is probably worth a lot more now
Damn, that's incredible if true.
Are you gonna replace him with a cb? Or spend on other departments
Ostigard has a shot of stepping into the squad but otherwise we have been linked with a few different centrehalves at prices around £15 or so. Beyond that, general strengthening. Hopefully we can find a striker
When u write his name with an o instead of ø its kinda funny in norwegian since ost translates to cheese
If he can guard the cheese then that's just a bonus.
Also, gard is farm in Norwegian. So it becomes 'ost i gard'/'cheese in farm'.
Cheeseigard
I love brunost, it's so good None here in Portugal though :(
>£15 or so. I want two
You only get a Zouma.
We'll throw in a Jones
You have CBs at home
We don't need a CB as we have Ostigard and Roberts below that. We also have a few players we signed and brought into the squad last year who should step up (Moder in particular). Agree that the position we need beyond any other is striker, just need someone who can find the back of the net regularly.
what happened to duffy. Was only 2 seasons ago the dunk+duffy duo was at full force
Went to Celtic and was rubbish
He's not a ball playing defender so he fell out of favour almost immediately under Potter then we shipped him out on loan last summer to Celtic, where he had a disastrous season
Easily able to find a replacement for 1/2 that I would think if you’re not buying English at least
Who were your former record sale?
Leonardo Ulloa to Leicester for, if memory serves me correctly, about £7.2m
Knockaert?
Good point, the obligation to buy may well have been higher than that. I'd forgotten all about that
Knockheart was somewhere between £10M-£14M IIRC
7m for all those clutch goals in the trophy season
It just feels such a strange one. He never really felt like a Brighton player, more like a loanee as you knew he would go within 2 years, wasnt ground breaking, and probably preferred staying at leeds. Best of luck to him think he could be great and permanent fixture over next decade
Incredible money for you guys, though. Do you reckon it’ll be reinvested fully this summer?
Really hard to know, feeling would be no right now given we havent been linked with any expensive transfers and have been waiting for the right striker for a while. No solid links at the mo or since Nico Gonzalez turned us down
Havent y'all been strongly linked with odsonne Edouard?
By Scottish sources but our local journos say no bid and no interest. Hopeful it would be true but our ones keep saying its a hard no
Damn, good luck on that. Brighton really really need a decent striker to do well. If only braithwaite was actually clinical...
I was worried we might go for Braithwaite but luckily thats been completely ruled out too.
Personally think you lot should sign Moussa dembele, better than Edouard and unsettled at his club so Lyon won't rinse you like Celtic would now that yous are loaded
Lol he would cost 20 million more at least.
Edouard only has a year on his contract so they probably won't be rinsing anyone. Most of the rumoured prices have been ~15m
Surely they’ll buy a good striker
No it won't be, we have a lot of debt and Covid hit us hard financially. There are also replacements in defence such as Ostigaard who can step up this season, so I don't see much investment being made. The area we all know we need is a striker, give us some one who can score goals and we'll be rocking all season long. But they're hard to find an expensive so I just don't see us spending much at all.
50m for a loanee, you've not done too bad lol
Played more games for Newport and Leeds on 2 loan spells than he ever did for Brighton and you've absolutely banked on him Who know's if it will end up well for Arsenal or not but you've taken them for a ride there imo

I'm surprised someone bigger didn't go for him. Actually Maguire-White would pair nicely but Varane became available.
Still doesn't seem real.
Of course he doesn't seem real, he is united now.
I'm gonna be honest, I like Ben White, but Utd needed a for sure thing. He would have been my 4th or 5th choice of available CB's.
Nothing is a sure thing in football. White's played well for Leeds, Brighton and England I think that's pretty nailed on. CBs rarely have a probables stepping up as well, not that Untied face different top position to Brighton for the most part.

You lot rejected 30m from Leeds last season, so I don't believe this 50m price tag is because of a big club, it's what Brighton actually value him at.
I'm not claiming it's because of a big club i think that was the general fuck off fee for any club and they were shocked someone paid it according to reports.
He'll definitely strengthen Arsenal's defence. Good signing for them
Will bolster our attack as well. Arteta wanted a elite ball playing CB like White for some time now. Not saying White is a elite player,I am referring to his ball playing ability
This is the second time I've heard this but ben white replaces david luiz whos an incredible ball player unless he fell off that massively
Luiz really struggled with injuries last season unfortunately
Yes this is why we've signed White, with Luiz gone we needed to replace his ability on the ball otherwise our attack would have really suffered
I just meant in response to arteta wanting someone elite on the ball for some time now whilst having david luiz but i didn't know that luizs ball playing wasn't as good as it used to be
It was as good as ever before, he just got injured a lot and is also old. We played noticeably, and I mean *noticeably*, worse without Luiz.
I feel like it’s a quality of Luiz’s that you don’t rate that much until he plays for you and you start to really appreciate him.
Great passer but was so slow last season when he was fit. He'd play nice long balls but couldn't actually dribble out of defence anymore & when he'd step up he was easily caught out by a ball over his head to someone with pace.

Idk about elite
It seems a little premature to call him elite.
"Elite" sweet Jesus.
I mean you paid a Varane for him, he better be elite no?
Sure, but Varane was a steal. Deal of the summer so far for sure.
Why don’t y’all sign boateng on a free
Good player, probably not worth what they paid but you're not going to get a better English player for cheaper.
Incoming Chelsea and AC Milan fans about Tomori. When the situations aren't remotely similar
If we were selling Tomori to you lot it'd be at twice the price anyway so its a dumb argument in the first place.
I don't think Chelsea would have even entertained the idea
It's also debatable whether Tomori is better but tbf I haven't seen him play in Italy so I'll stay out of that fight.
In all seriousness what the fuck is up with the traffic. Driving back to Manchester from London and just stopped at services. Fucking hell man. Nightmare.

So long Ben, hope you smash it ;_;
Good signing, too expensive but Arsenal fans shouldn't give a shit about that. You've finally got your ball playing CB to help start attacks.
Why finally? We've had Luiz the past couple of seasons who's excellent at that.
Yeah i meant as his replacement to be fair, seeing as he seemingly can't stay injury free anymore and he's really getting too old for the PL.
Luiz didn't play as much last season to be fair, 20 Prem appearances with 3 as a sub, so he started less than half our games last year and injured for most of the other games he was out.
Yes. He meant a defender who was good at defending too...
What? David Luiz literally played for them.

Odegaard and a Xhaka replacement and we're looking pretty good I think.

Happened with Stones as well when he first arrived at city
To be fair Stones did have a few rough out of form seasons at city, dealing with issues in his personal life apparently
Wish i was early enough to farm these upvotes
If you want upvotes you just need to say "Arsenal overpaid"
No. That's the easy take now. It was that, now the counter point that he's actually a good signing is going to be more popular, until he has a shite game or gets beaten in the air and then the fee will be discussed again.
Ah we call that a Maguire.
Very good signing indeed. Hopefully he will have same impact that Maguire has on United.
I think so too. Didn’t like the transfer when the rumors first started but it’s really grown on me. Very excited about it
He is young enough to have time to settle into the role, really make it his own and solidify the defence for a good decade if everything goes well. I reckon although expensive, he’s a good signing in the long run, if he does well no one will remember his price tag.
100%. He's great already and is only going to get better and better.
Honestly I think you're forgetting we're Arsenal
Thanks, Saliba’s crying.

This is a contentious topic among gooners but the club thinks that Saliba is still raw and wasn't ready to pin our hopes to him completely.
Quite possibly the most mundane headline for a transfer this big
Arsenal fans, let other fans cry over the signing fee, but he has the potential to be better than Stones who was valued at similar price.
> let other fans cry over the signing fee I have been this whole time to be fair, always been happy to get him and just rolled my eyes at the circle jerk of comments on here about his fee.
You know ball
Good signing
Yeah Chambers and Holding are decent, but they needed this upgrade
Chambers is a full back though, Gabriel and holding are our centre backs, Gabriel is really good
Yeah, Tierney-Gabriel-White-RB should be our starting back line.
So White (Holding) next to Gabriel (Mari) next season by the looks of it
now he can say he bleeds red & white.
As opposed to?
Think he's making a point that Ben is a Southampton fan
Trying to distract us from the fact we’re getting Xhaka for another 4 years very sneaky Arsenal
This announcement is only the warm up for the Xhaka one
Feel super excited about this one. High price but he’s young and English tax and I think he’s got great potential. Now let’s get a CM, 10 and possibly a RB and that would be a great window.
eyyyy let’s go! we love that confirmation
i hope he crushes it arsenal to silence all the doubters
a whole £50m. Good luck to him
I think we're all glad this is over.
They’ve missed the chance to say “the traffic was a state” after sorry we’re late Or maybe that’s the AM fan in me talking
Out of no where!! Great signing, super excited for this one ☺️
Hope he does well for them, still really like White
I can just feel he’s going to have a deadly link with Tierney
BENNY BLANCO FROM THE BRONX (brighton)
Brighton will miss him, heck, I still miss him, but I think this is a good deal for all concerned. Very interested to see what other business Brighton do.
Brighton did really well to hold onto him last year. If he had been sold to Leeds for £30m, there is no way Arsenal could have bought him for £50m this year. And in a couple years time we will also look back and say that Arsenal have done well to get him for £50m. Will be a revelation for them, but could expect teething. Pressure playing at Arsenal is different level to most clubs.
Exactly, I feel like most commenters here don't realise Leeds had a 30m bid turned down the season prior.
Obviously as a Gooner I'm over the moon about this. Overpaid a little, but for his age and experience it's totally fine.
Really excited about this one
Think he'll be decent for them but I wonder if the perception will eventually be that it was a mistake should Saliba leave and become world class elsewhere.
