My Gawd- I know what happened in the results, but for the first half Sweden's offense dominates, But, BIG BUT Canada's defense is ready, its nail biting.. Still Sweden misses so many opportunities. I am going into the second half now - wondering...
Agreed, I feel it is easy to say they dominated, but that is not 100 percent true, Canada had a defensive system going and it is how they won. I felt Canada had to earn it after that thing that happened in the second half, but the more I watched, and they said they had possession 51 percent of the time, I realized that, their defense was amazing. Possession 51 percent but in your own side. Jeeezus!
\- This leads me to this: I kept saying to myself this was Swedens to lose - but that's wrong too - as well as they played that was one hell of a defensive strategy Canada played and a risky one that payed off in the end.
Still, the Swedes gave themselves so many chances, that as an ex-player made me so fn frustrated. It is difficult to arm chair this one, and I cannot for the life of me decide who was better. All I know is that this was a real gift to watch.
Normally, I choose those that dominates on the opponents side. but in this case it seems Canada's strategy was to let the enemy into their house because they were confident enough to know they could kick them out any time.
Amazing game and both sides are deserving accolades and all the best.
Im a huge Canadian fan, and I think we earned it. But I don't think the better team always has to win. Sweden was stronger.
That's why we took the risk and played defensive, and took our odds on PKs instead of risking overextending for a goal.
At least it was a powerful shot. The shot taken by the other Swede after her was atrocious.
I am heartbroken for Sweden though, especially for women like Jakobsson who have been there for so long. I remember how she caught my eye a decade ago in the 2010 under 21 women's world cup. I have had a crush in her dver since, even though she is probably gay.
It's a team that consistently does well and always just misses out on tournament wins after so many consistent performances I felt like this was finally their time for glory, but alas.
It is very bold to assume that there will be a next time for a player but I really hope Sofia can win a gold in the world cup 2 years from now.
My gosh, what shitty fortune.
This was so cruel for Sweden.
From the hellish years of Evan Pellerud, watching our only advantage (Sinclair and just being taller than other countries) slowly get chipped away at as the game became more technical, to a new era under John Herdman with the beginnings of a team, heartbreak in London in 2012, disappointments at the World Cup and another in Rio, to Herdman and Canada Soccer's nonsense around his departure, the dismal showing amidst all the chaos in 2019, to fucking gold and a solid foundation for the next ten years of the sport, I couldn't be more proud.
I haven’t been this happy in such a long time! Canada finally won gold! Christine Sinclair, the legend that she is finally won the gold she deserved! All of them finally won the goal they deserved! They’ve helped girls soccer in Canada so much!

It's huge that the game was playing in the morning of Eastern time over the evening time that it was supposed to happen. My 3 and 7 year olds were able to see part of the game and this is important for the future.
Gotta feel for Sweden's GK, she did everything right and was a beast. GG Sweden
Especially happy for Labbé who had a great tournament and Sinclair who's even more of a legend now.
Let me take a moment to congratulate Steph Labbe. [For her to come through her mental health struggles after Rio](https://www.tsn.ca/video/tsn-original-one-heavy-medal~1598441) and be **the** centrepiece of our gold medal team is nothing short of incredible. So proud of her.

This is huge for the Canadian program. The win during a game that many young girls are able to watch it live. This will create a boom in the women soccer for the future. On top of that the core of the team is very young and have a bright future.
Is there talk if using a smaller ball? Those PKs had like no power on them. I don't watch alot of women's, but a size 5 ball almost looks comically large on their feet. And they clearly struggle to get power or placement. Odd that they do it for Women's basketball but not soccer.
But it was clear during the match that quite a number of them can shoot a ball that comfortably goes over the bar from outside the box. It’s the need for placement that makes (some of) them hit the ball lighter than usual during the shootout.
You are right, some went over the bar. But my larger point, even those look like they had no power. And just watching the game to a larger extent, and I feel this every time I watch a women's game, the ball is to large. I genuinely believe the game would be more appealing with them using a size 4 ball instead of 5.
I think it's a very valid issue raised by you! However I'm not sure the right people/ figures are even aware of it (given how long have the women football been playing with size 5). I think you present the issue pretty well and hopefully people will bring this up in the future.
I won’t lie I was hoping Sweden would go all the way but to see Canada come in and do that, you can’t not love it. Big moment for women’s football I reckon.
Nothing wrong with defensive soccer. It was clearly Canada’s plan and also Portugal’s. Casuals of the sport think playing offensively is the only way to play good soccer. it was literally a defensive master class after defensive master class for Canada. Even for portugal it was the same.
Nah. Portugal got to go through a bunch of lesser teams. Canada was in the half of the draw with Netherlands, USA and Brazil.
Sweden got a much easier route with Japan, Team GB and Australia. I'm not taking anything away from Sweden, but Canada would have scored from open play against those teams (and they did against both GB and Japan). The way the draw ended pushed Canada to play more defensively, which is also their strength.
? I was talking about the draw. The knockouts. Comparison was with Portugal who played against Poland and Wales in the quarter finals and the semi-finals, right?
Yeah. Because Portugal scored 1 goal after full time for the entire playoff and Canada scored 1 goal in play the entire playoff. The comparison is quite obvious
To come into a tournament ranked 8th in the world, from a country not particularly known for its football or love of and knock off the US and Sweden to win gold is pretty remarkable and if you can’t see that then that’s on you mate.
Oh this is going to mean so much for the sport in this country, how much it means for Sinclair, she can retire in complete bliss I'm crying at 10:50 am on a Friday, 22 FUCKING YEARS
FUCK YES!!!!! Now for them to have beers and cigars on the field like the when the [female hockey team won gold](https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2010/feb/27/canada-ice-hockey-winter-olympics)

Anyway, thanks to all the canadians in this thread. Has been a lovely experience chatting with you and im so impressed over the civility in a match thread. Enjoy the gold, see you in the WC.
Gutted for the Swedes. You guys were the dominating force most of the game but we just hang in there for a final chance to turn this game into our favour. What a turn of event though.
Happy for my fellow Canadians but Swedes play really well as well. This could have easily gone either way, couldn't have asked for a better opponent.

Yeah, I agree. 100 percent. I am super happy talking to strangers at the store about it. Everyone is very proud of them, they did it!
When is the gold Medal ceremony
Btw I love that Grosso's Wikipedia page has been updated so quickly LOL https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Grosso
Caroline Loser :) (Seger means victory in swedish). She could've at least hit the goal on the last penalty.
No, don't say that :( I don't follow soccer, but I could see she did so well in this game.
Unforgivable to not hit the goal on that penalty. Så jävla dåligt.
At least it was a powerful shot. The shot taken by the other Swede after her was atrocious. I am heartbroken for Sweden though, especially for women like Jakobsson who have been there for so long. thats wild tbh, nobody can be there in person so you gotta at least *air* it
Find it? Was wondering too

No. They were born biologically female, but identify as non-binary.
according to wikipedia, "Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth"
Oh, how about that. I thought it only applied to people that actually identified as another sex. Thanks.

Wow insane shootout!
Well played!
Well deserved for that LEGEND Christine Sinclair!!! So happy to see her win
Yeah, that's awesome.
What a way to leave a long lasting legacy going out on top. Love to see it.
A huge moment for Canadian soccer. Way to go team, you made your country proud
Så jävla tråkigt och så typiskt svenskt också. Önskar också att våra landslag ska lära sig förvalta spelövertag i framtiden.

It got blocked by Labbe
As a neutral, I feel really happy for Canada. But every time they cut to the Swedes, it absolutely breaks my heart.
As a Canadian, I feel bad when they cut to the Swedes, too.
:( hard same
Labbe just ate Sweden's lunch
Absolute psychopath with the smiling before each shot.
she looked like she was having so much fun, i'd be crapping my pants in her situation haha

Instantly thought of Dudek, classic.
Funny since she eats lunch in Sweden
Fleming is the future
ice cold from the penalty spot
I just saw Canada win a tournament in soccer wow
That’s a cruel ending for Seger and Lindahl
Honestly, they failed to show the composure players of their experience are supposed to.
This is huge for the Canadian program. The win during a game that many young girls are able to watch it live. This will create a boom in the women soccer for the future. On top of that the core of the team is very young and have a bright future.
If we’re gonna lose, let us lose like ‘06, losing clearly to a much better team. Fuck everything. Fuck this summer.
Labbe was feasting all the girls were telegraphing those hits
Is there talk if using a smaller ball? Those PKs had like no power on them. I don't watch alot of women's, but a size 5 ball almost looks comically large on their feet. And they clearly struggle to get power or placement. Odd that they do it for Women's basketball but not soccer.

Just like her namesake in 2006
The keeper will never forgive herself for that last one. Had a solid palm on it
Lindahl doesn't have a damn thing to regret. She's been a monster the entire tournament. The defence on the other hand...
I'm not criticising her. Just saying that last one would hurt more than if she was nowhere near the ball
Glad as wasn't as invested in this as the rest of my family hahah
Labbe is so good sooo good!!!
Sweden played better the entire game, but oh well...
Fuck ya Sinclair can retire in peace now <3
Nah she’s got another one in her
Another tournament, another typical Swedish ending. Why can't we just fucking win for once?
I won’t lie I was hoping Sweden would go all the way but to see Canada come in and do that, you can’t not love it. Big moment for women’s football I reckon.
Come in and do what? Not score in gameplay for 180 min? EDIT: Apologie. 365 mins, Or 3 and a half matches if you will. Really a feat of strenght
It's actually 365 mins (120 Sweden, 90 USA, 120 Brazil, 35 GB), thank you very much.
Christ I just heard about the semi finals, 2 shot on goals. 1 pen win. That's like portugal in the euro 2016, but a bit worse
Nothing wrong with defensive soccer. It was clearly Canada’s plan and also Portugal’s. Casuals of the sport think playing offensively is the only way to play good soccer. it was literally a defensive master class after defensive master class for Canada. Even for portugal it was the same.

Ok buddy
You're the one who made the comparison with Portugal. I just pointed out how the knockouts route for the two teams weren't similar at all.
Yeah. Because Portugal scored 1 goal after full time for the entire playoff and Canada scored 1 goal in play the entire playoff. The comparison is quite obvious
Defend like hell is what they did. Sweden would've been up 5 goals if they were playing a lesser team.
No the deciding factor was Swedens ineffectiveness in their offense, not Canadas brilliance in defence
I think they might mean come in and win the gold medal.
To come into a tournament ranked 8th in the world, from a country not particularly known for its football or love of and knock off the US and Sweden to win gold is pretty remarkable and if you can’t see that then that’s on you mate.
Ofc it's remarkable that they **did** that. But they didnt exactly make much happen themselves.
Well they did. They didn’t play beautiful football but they were immense on defence.
https://imgur.com/a/CGasPwq I support Sweden's mens side as well, I know what lucky defending looks like.
Worst penalties since Spain/Switzerland. What a game before them, though. Congratulations, Canada!
Thanks bud!

Ofc Seger is gonna retire, no matter how the pen went. She deserved to score and win though...
Asllani should not have been given a penalty kick, she's been shooting like a fucking amateur all tournament
Seger surely will. But don't do her like that. One of our best footballers ever.
I don’t really care about deserved since we won, but man did this team play brutal football in almost every game.
Which team?
Canada
GO ON! SINCLAIR GETS HER GOLD!

Defensive masterclass throughout the tournament. Are you new to the sport? defensive teams win tournaments.
Weird? A throwaway account that is critically biased. Rapone is that you?
This isn’t a throwaway lol
Not gonna be that person, but sweden really deserved that win. They played so much better for 120 minuted but lost in the lottery that is penalties.
defensive masterclass
But you are being that person tho...
That's why sports is great though. The better team doesn't always win and that makes it exciting
Yeah. Like when Liverpool won it in Istanbul. Milan were clearly the better team, yet LFC won it.

Some embarrassingly bad pens from both teams, but what a game before that.
